Summary: Background: Children and adolescents’ myopia is a major public problem. Although the clinical effect of various interventions has been extensively studied, there is a lack of national-level and integral assessments to simultaneously quantify the economics and effectiveness of comprehensive myopia prevention and control programs. We aimed to compare the cost-effectiveness between traditional myopia prevention and control strategy, digital comprehensive myopia prevention and control strategy and school-based myopia screening program in China. Methods: A Markov model was used to compare the cost-utility and cost-effectiveness among school-based myopia screening, traditional myopia prevention and control strategy, and digital comprehensive myopia prevention and control strategy among 6 to 18-year-old rural and urban schoolchildren. Parameters were collected from published sources. The primary outcomes were quality-adjusted life-year, disability-adjusted life-year, incremental cost-utility ratio, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratio. Extensive sensitivity analyses were performed to test the robustness and sensitivity of base-case analysis. Findings: Compared with school-based myopia screening strategy, after implementing digital comprehensive myopia prevention and control strategy, the prevalence of myopia among 18-year-old students in rural and urban areas was reduced by 3.79% and 3.48%, respectively. The incremental cost-utility ratio per quality-adjusted life-year gained with the digital myopia management plan ($11,301 for rural setting, and $10,707 for urban setting) was less than 3 times the per capita gross domestic product in rural settings ($30,501) and less than 1 time the per capita gross domestic product in urban settings ($13,856). In cost-effectiveness analysis, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio produced by digital comprehensive myopia management strategy ($37,446 and $41,814 per disability-adjusted life-year averted in rural and urban settings) slightly exceeded the cost-effectiveness threshold. When assuming perfect compliance, full coverage of outdoor activities and spectacles satisfied the cost-effectiveness threshold, and full coverage of outdoor activities produced the lowest cost ($321 for rural settings and $808 for urban settings). Interpretations: Health economic evidence confirmed the cost-effectiveness of promoting digital comprehensive myopia prevention and control strategies for schoolchildren at the national level. Sufficient evidence provides an economic and public health reference for further action by governments, policy-makers and other myopia-endemic countries. Abstract Background The degeneration of retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) cells results in severe diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) that causes blindness in millions of individuals. Results We report that targeting GMP-AMP (cGAMP) synthase (cGAS) alleviates Alu RNA-induced immune responses and cytotoxicity in RPE. We find that the deletion of cGAS in RPE inhibits the Alu RNA-stimulated interferon production. cGAS deficiency also protects RPE from cell death triggered by Alu RNA. Importantly, two natural chemicals, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and resveratrol (RSVL), are effective in suppressing the immunogenic and cytotoxic effect of Alu RNA in RPE. Conclusions Our findings further demonstrate the crucial role of cGAS in the Alu RNA-induced RPE damage and present EGCG and RSVL as potential therapies for AMD and other RPE degeneration-related conditions.

Abstract Background Achieving an appropriate vault is the main concern after the implantation of Implantable Collamer Lens (ICLs) for surgical correction of high myopia. The vault will vary with time and optical parameters, such as accommodation and pupil size. This research is to evaluate the vault change in Myopic and Toric ICLs under different lighting conditions; and to analyze the relationship between vault changes and pupillary responses to light. Methods We enrolled and analyzed 68 eyes from 68 patients who were implanted with Myopic EVO ICLs; we also included 60 eyes from 60 patients who were implanted with Toric EVO ICLs. The anterior chamber depth, pupil size and the post-operative vault were evaluated, 1 week after the operation, using a Visante Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) under different lighting conditions. For each eye that was assessed, we calculated the vault change, which is defined as the difference between vault under mesopic condition and photopic condition; and the rate of vault change, which is defined as the vault change divided by mesopic vault. Results No significant difference was noted with the anterior chamber depth between mesopic and photopic conditions in either group. A significant decrease in vault and pupil size was detected under photopic condition in both groups. We found no difference in vault change between Myopic and Toric EVO ICLs under different lighting conditions. Moreover, the rate of vault change had a significant decrease with increased mesopic vault (baseline value). Conclusions Too low a mesopic vault has a big rate of vault change, which may cause the contact of ICL with crystalline lens in photopic state; Too high a mesopic vault would constrict the posterior movement of pupil. The findings of the study suggest that, for patients with high or low vault, we should be more careful and must perform checks in different lighting conditions.

Abstract Background To compare the clinical performance of bifocal and trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) in cataract surgery, a meta-analysis on randomized controlled trials was conducted. Methods A comprehensive literature retrieval of PubMed, Science Direct and EMBASE was performed in this systematic review. Clinical outcomes included visual acuity (VA), contrast sensitivity (CS), spectacle independence, postoperative refraction and surgical satisfaction. Results There were 8 RCTs included in this study. The difference of uncorrected near VA (UNVA) between the bifocal IOLs and trifocal IOLs had no significance [MD = 0.02, 95%CI: (− 0.03,0.06)]. There was no significant difference in the distant-corrected near VA (DCNVA) with MD of 0.04 [95%CI (− 0.02, 0.10)]. Compared with trifocal group, the uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA) [MD = 0.09,95%CI:(0.01,0.17)] was significantly worse in the bifocal group. No difference was found in distance-corrected intermediate VA (DCIVA) [MD = 0.09, 95%CI: (− 0.04, 0.23)] between two groups. Analysis on AT LISA subgroup indicated the bifocal group had worse intermediate VA than trifocal group (AT LISA tri 839 M) [MD = 0.18, 95%CI: (0.12, 0.24) for UIVA and MD = 0.19, 95%CI: (0.13, 0.25) for DCIVA]. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in the uncorrected distance VA (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) [MD = 0.01, 95%CI: (− 0.01,0.04) for UDVA; MD = 0.00, 95%CI: (− 0.01,0.01) for CDVA]. The postoperative refraction of bifocal group was similar to that of trifocal group [MD = -0.08, 95% CI: (− 0.19, 0.03) for spherical equivalent; MD = -0.09, 95%CI: (− 0.21, 0.03) for cylinder; MD = -0.09, 95% CI: (− 0.27, 0.08) for sphere]. No difference was found for spectacle independence, posterior capsular opacification (PCO) incidence and patient satisfaction between bifocal IOLs and trifocal IOLs. [RR = 0.89, 95% CI: (0.71, 1.12) for spectacle independence; RR = 1.81, 95% CI: (0.50, 6.54) for PCO incidence; RR = 0.98, 5% CI: (0.86, 1.12) for patient satisfaction]. Conclusion Patients receiving trifocal IOLs, especially AT LISA tri 839 M, have a better intermediate VA than those receiving bifocal IOLs. Near and distance visual performance, spectacle independence, postoperative refraction and surgical satisfaction of bifocal IOLs were similar to those of trifocal IOLs.

To determine corneal Q value and its related factors in Chinese subjects older than 30 years.Cross sectional study.1,683 participants (1,683 eyes) from the Handan Eye Study were involved, including 955 female and 728 male with average age of 53.64 years old (range from 30 to 107 years). The corneal Q values of anterior and posterior surfaces were measured at 3.0, 5.0 and 7.0mm aperture diameters using Bausch & Lomb Orbscan IIz (software version 3.12). Age, gender and refractive power were recorded.The average Q values of the anterior surface at 3.0, 5.0 and 7.0mm aperture diameters were -0.28±0.18, -0.28±0.18, and -0.29±0.18, respectively. Penaeus vannamei is an important shrimp species that is farmed globally, owing to its fast growth and good environmental adaptability. However, vibriosis outbreaks, such as acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease and translucent post-larva disease, have become a considerable constraint on the development of the shrimp aquaculture industry globally in recent years. Due to the negative consequences associated with the use of antibiotics to control bacterial diseases, alternative technologies, such as improving shrimp immunity, the nutrition level of shrimp diets, and the ecological environment of shrimp ponds by using probiotics, have been developed. Owing to the limitations related to the sourcing and cost of fish meal, a large amount of vegetable protein is often used as a fish meal substitute in shrimp artificial feed, which is not only difficult for the shrimp to digest and absorb but can also lead to nutritional antagonism. In order to improve the health status of aquaculture animals by providing high-quality feed, the development and optimization of fermented feed have received extensive attention. Probiotics in fermented feed can produce exogenous cellulase, protease, amylase, and other digestive enzymes in the digestive tract of farmed animals, which can improve the feed utilization rate, promote growth performance, and enhance the immunity of shrimp.In this study, in order to explore the application effects of shrimp feed fermented by different probiotic bacteria, probiotic strains, including Bacillus subtilis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Lactobacillus acidophilus, were used individually and in combination for the fermentation of commercial feed and fed to shrimp (P. vannamei) for 28 days. The survival, body length growth, specific growth, and feed conversion rates of the shrimp were analyzed, and the density of Vibrio in vitro and in vivo, as well as relevant immune indicators in the serum, were analyzed. Furthermore, ammonia nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen concentrations in the water column were compared between the groups.The results demonstrated that the survival rates of shrimp in the fermented feed groups of B. subtilis, L. acidophilus, and complex bacteria were 8.54%, 8.54%, and 9.76%, respectively, which were significantly higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05). The body length growth rates in the B. subtilis and L. acidophilus groups were significantly higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05), while the feed conversion rate in the L. acidophilus group was significantly decreased compared with that of the control group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the specific growth rate of shrimp between the experimental groups and the control group (P > 0.05). Fermented feed can affect the composition of bacteria in the hepatopancreas of shrimp. The density of Vibrio in the hepatopancreas of shrimp in each experimental group was significantly lower than that in the control group on days 14 and 21 of the experiment (P < 0.05). The feeding of different fermented feed in the short term (within 14 days) had no significant effect on reducing the total density of Vibrio in the water. However, feeding B. subtilis and L. acidophilus fermented feed significantly reduced the Vibrio density in the water body on day 21 (P < 0.05). In addition, the serum total protein concentration in each experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05). The activities of serum peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and phenoloxidase in the L. acidophilus fermented feed group increased significantly compared with those of the other experimental and control groups (P < 0.05). The activities of serum peroxidase and phenoloxidase in the serum of shrimp fed S. cerevisiae fermented feed were significantly higher than those of the control group (P < 0.05). Complex bacteria-fermented feed could significantly increase the activities of serum lysozyme, peroxidase, and phenoloxidase (P < 0.05). However, the activity of the detected immune-related enzymes in the B. subtilis group did not increase significantly compared with that of the control group (P > 0.05), except for the activity of total serum protein, which was higher than that of the control group. The results also revealed that the concentration of ammonia nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen in the water group of each experimental group at the end of the experiment was significantly lower compared to that of the control group. S. cerevisiae and L. acidophilus groups had the best effect in reducing the concentration of ammonia nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen in the water, respectively.In summary, shrimp feed fermented by B. subtilis, S. cerevisiae, and L. acidophilus singly or in combination could improve the survival rate, growth performance, and immunity of shrimp to a degree, and reduce the concentration of ammonia nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen in aquaculture water. Moreover, L. acidophilus shows great potential as a candidate probiotic for shrimp feed fermentation. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for the development of shrimp fermentation feed, which can improve the feed utilization and survival rates of shrimp in aquaculture.

Flinders technology associates (FTA) card (Whatman®) is a paper-based matrix designed to fix, purify, and store genetic material from various biological sources. It can conveniently and quickly preserve nucleic acids and may fulfil the requirements of long-distance and cross-border sample transportation. The FTA card can store and transport tissue, nucleic acid, and other sample types at room temperature (20–25 ℃). Nucleic acid can be extracted directly for detection and be sent by express as an ordinary parcel without being treated as dangerous or as special goods, eliminating tedious processes, saving time, and ensuring sample quality. It is widely used in the human and animal medicine field. It has been successfully used for the storage and transportation of livestock pathogens and viral nucleic acids. In terms of aquatic animals, the FTA card has been used by researchers to store white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) and the shrimp Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP): However, there is no relevant research report on the elution effect of the nucleic acid stored in the FTA card, which affects the application of the FTA card. The infectious hypodermal and haematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV) is an important shrimp pathogen and severely impacts the shrimp culture industry. It was first found in Hawaii, United States, in 1981 and then spread to several countries, including to Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Brazil, and China. The IHHNV infecting Penaeus vannamei does not cause high mortality, but growth would become slow and deformed, resulting in great economic losses. Early detection and prevention management are particularly important in current situations, which lack effective control measures for the disease. Several IHHNV detection methods have been established that use molecular biological methods, including conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time PCR (these are recommended in the aquatic animal disease diagnosis Manual of the World Organization for Animal Health). Nucleic acid extraction by the above methods meets the requirements for samples, usually frozen, ethanol, or other nucleic acid preservation reagents. Low temperature preservation conditions and composition restrictions of preservation solutions present certain difficulties in disease investigation, surveillance, and monitoring of shrimp farming. It is particularly important to address this dilemma. To find a fast method for the preservation and separation of IHHNV DNA and provide complete nucleic acid materials for subsequent research, we selected FTA cards as the preservation medium, and designed seven kinds of FTA cards with attached DNA elution methods based on the FTA purification reagent, TE buffer, and deionized water. We evaluated the elution and separation effects of different nucleic acids and the minimum amount of dot FTA card nucleic acids through real-time PCR detection. The appropriate solution was spotted onto FTA cards according to the manufacturer′s protocol, labeled, and air-dried for 1 day at room temperature. The result shows that on the 4 mm2 FTA card, the sample volume was 2.5 μL. When the eluent is used as the template, the minimum FTA card nucleic acid concentration needs to be 1.47×104 copies/μL above the best detection sensitivity, and 100% detection rate can be obtained by washing the FTA card with 50 μL TE buffer solution at 95 ℃ for 5 min. Using the FTA card as the template, the nucleic acid concentration of the dot FTA card needs to be above 1.82×103 copies/μL, eluted with FTA purified reagent thrice at room temperature, and then eluted with TE buffer twice. Each elution time is 5 min as this can obtain the best detection sensitivity and demonstrates 100% accuracy. The elution effect of the above two schemes was better than that of the other five schemes. The nucleic acids of WSSV, EHP, decapod iridescent virus 1, covert mobility Noda virus, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus causing acute hepatopancreatic necrosis were preserved using FTA card to test the efficiency of the established elution method. It is assumed that this method is universal for the elution of other shrimp pathogenic nucleic acids. At present, research on the application of FTA card is mostly seen in the nucleic acid effect of its preservation and transportation of tissue samples. There are few reports on the relationship between the amount of preserved nucleic acid, separation methods, and detection effect. This study shows that FTA cards used to preserve pathogenic nucleic acid requires a specific amount of nucleic acid in the sample and directly affects the detection results of the sample with different FTA card elution methods. This study provides a feasible scheme for the preservation and elution of IHHNV DNA with FTA cards. The application of this technology has potential use as storage and transport strategy for surveillance programs and can enhance biosecurity in shrimp culture, which provides a scientific basis for the preservation and transportation conditions for the collection of wild shrimp samples and the regional transmission of viral nucleic acid samples.

Abstract The functional utilization of recycled polymers has emerged as a current prominent and timely subject. Flexible wearable devices with high sensitivity to conductivity have garnered significant attention in the fields of human healthcare monitoring and personal heat management. One significant obstacle that needs to be addressed is the simultaneous maintenance of both sensing functionality and durability in composite fabrics. In this paper, a collection of durable, breathable, and flexible smart fabric was produced using the scratch coating method. The fabrics were created by utilizing a regenerated polyethylene terephthalate fabric as a base material, incorporating graphene microsheets (G) as a conductive agent, and applying a waterborne polyurethane layer as a surface protective coating. Furthermore, an investigation was conducted to assess their sensing performance and electrothermal performance. The composite fabric exhibits significant advantages in terms of high conductivity (592 S/m), wide strain range, high sensitivity (Gauge factor = 6.04) and fantabulous dynamic stability (2000 cycles) at a mass ratio of Graphene/WPU loading of 8:2. These sensors were successfully utilized to monitor various degrees of real-time human body movements, ranging from significant deformation bending of elbows to slight deformation swallowing. Furthermore, the sensors also exhibit a significant electric heating effect. Specifically, when a voltage of 10 V is applied, the sensors can reach a steady state temperature of 53.3 °C within a mere 30 s. This discovery holds potential for the development of wearable heaters that can be used for on-demand thermal therapy, functional protective clothing, and medical electric heating wearables.

The joint action of human activities and environmental changes contributes to the frequent occurrence of landslide, causing major hazards. Using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique enables the detailed detection of surface deformation, facilitating early landslide detection. The growing availability of SAR data and the development of artificial intelligence have spurred the integration of deep learning methods with InSAR for intelligent geological identification. However, existing studies using deep learning methods to detect landslides in InSAR deformation often rely on single InSAR data, which leads to the presence of other types of geological hazards in the identification results and limits the accuracy of landslide identification. Landslides are affected by many factors, especially topographic features. To enhance the accuracy of landslide identification, this study improves the existing geological hazard detection model and proposes a multi-source data fusion network termed MSFD-Net. MSFD-Net employs a pseudo-Siamese network without weight sharing, enabling the extraction of texture features from the wrapped deformation data and topographic features from topographic data, which are then fused in higher-level feature layers. We conducted comparative experiments on different networks and ablation experiments, and the results show that the proposed method achieved the best performance. We applied our method to the middle and upper reaches of the Yellow River in eastern Qinghai Province, China, and obtained deformation rates using Sentinel-1 SAR data from 2018 to 2020 in the region, ultimately identifying 254 landslides. Quantitative evaluations reveal that most detected landslides in the study area occurred at an elevation of 2500–3700 m with slope angles of 10–30°. The proposed landslide detection algorithm holds significant promise for quickly and accurately detecting wide-area landslides, facilitating timely preventive and control measures.

The optical image sub-pixel correlation (SPC) technique is an important method for monitoring large-scale surface deformation. RapidEye images, distinguished by their short revisit period and high spatial resolution, are crucial data sources for monitoring surface deformation. However, few studies have comprehensively analyzed the error sources and correction methods of the deformation field obtained from RapidEye images. We used RapidEye images without surface deformation to analyze potential errors in the offset fields. We found that the errors in RapidEye offset fields primarily consist of decorrelation noise, orbit error, and attitude jitter distortions. To mitigate decorrelation noise, the careful selection of offset pairs coupled with spatial filtering is essential. Orbit error can be effectively mitigated by the polynomial fitting method. To address attitude jitter distortions, we introduced a linear fitting approach that incorporated the coherence of attitude jitter. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed methods, we utilized RapidEye images to extract the coseismic displacement field of the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake sequence. The two-dimensional (2D) offset field contained deformation signals extracted from two earthquakes, with a maximum offset of 2.8 m in the E-W direction and 2.4 m in the N-S direction. A comparison with GNSS observations indicates that, after error correction, the mean relative precision of the offset field improved by 92% in the E-W direction and by 89% in the N-S direction. This robust enhancement underscores the effectiveness of the proposed error correction methods for RapidEye data. This study sheds light on large-scale surface deformation monitoring using RapidEye images.

BackgroundIgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic inflammatory disease which involves various organs such as the pancreas, lacrimal gland, salivary gland, retroperitoneum, and so on. These organs can be affected concomitantly. 18-Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography computed tomography (FDG-PETCT) is a systemic examination which can identify active inflammation and detect multiple organ involvement simultaneously. Pericardial involvement is rare in IgG4-RD, early detection and treatment can greatly improve the prognosis of patients.Case summaryWe reported a 82-year-old female patient referred to our department complaining of chest tightness and abdominal fullness for 8 months and massive pericardial effusion for 2 months. A large amount of pericardial effusion was found during the hospitalization of Gastroenterology. Then she was transferred to cardiology. Although infectious, tuberculous, and neoplastic pericardial effusions were excluded, there was still no diagnosis. The patients were examined by FDG-PETCT which considered IgG4-RD. After coming to our department, the results of the patient’s laboratory tests showed that immunoglobulin subgroup IgG4 was 14.0 g/L. Then we performed a biopsy of the right submandibular gland. Pathological morphology and immunohistochemistry suggested IgG4-RD. Combined with level of IgG4, clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical results, we determined the final diagnosis of IgG4 related diseases. Then we gave glucocorticoid and immunosuppressant treatment. At the end, pericardial effusion was completely absorbed. As prednisone acetate was gradually reduced, no recurrence of the disease has been observed.ConclusionPericardial effusion can be the initial presentation in IgG4-RD. For patients with massive pericardial effusion of unknown cause, early detection of IgG4 is recommended, and PETCT may be helpful for obtaining the diagnosis.

Abstract Background Early identification of axillary lymph node metastasis (ALNM) in breast cancer (BC) is still a clinical difficulty. There is still no good method to replace sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). The purpose of our study was to develop and validate a nomogram to predict the probability of ALNM preoperatively based on ultrasonography (US) and clinicopathological features of primary tumors. Methods From September 2019 to April 2022, the preoperative US) and clinicopathological data of 1076 T1-T2 BC patients underwent surgical treatment were collected. Patients were divided into a training set (875 patients from September 2019 to October 2021) and a validation set (201 patients from November 2021 to April 2022). Patients were divided into positive and negative axillary lymph node (ALN) group according pathology of axillary surgery. Compared the US and clinicopathological features between the two groups. The risk factors for ALNM were determined using multivariate logistic regression analysis, and a nomogram was constructed. AUC and calibration were used to assess its performance. Results By univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis, age (p = 0.009), histologic grades (p = 0.000), molecular subtypes (p = 0.000), tumor location (p = 0.000), maximum diameter (p = 0.000), spiculated margin (p = 0.000) and distance from the skin (p = 0.000) were independent risk factors of ALNM. Then a nomogram was developed. The model was good discriminating with an AUC of 0.705 and 0.745 for the training and validation set, respectively. And the calibration curves demonstrated high agreement. However, in further predicting a heavy nodal disease burden (> 2 nodes), none of the variables were significant. Conclusion This nomogram based on the US and clinicopathological data can predict the presence of ALNM good in T1-T2 BC patients. But it cannot effectively predict a heavy nodal disease burden (> 2 nodes).

Abstract Background Luminescent nanomaterials (LNMs), especially newly-exploited fluorescent carbon-dots (CDs), have demonstrated promising candidates for sunlight harvesting and enhanced photosynthesis efficiency of crops. However, most of the studies focus on the design and synthesis of LNMs and primary metabolism in biomass acceleration, secondary metabolism that closely associated with the quality ingredients of plants is rarely mentioned. Results UV-absorptive and water-soluble NIR-CDs were harvested via a facile microwave-assisted carbonization method. The effect and regulatory mechanism of NIR-CDs on the secondary metabolism and bioactive ingredients accumulation in Tetrastigma hemsleyanum were explored. A total of 191 differential secondary metabolites and 6874 differentially expressed genes were identified when the NIR-CDs were adopted for enhancing growth of T. hemsleyanum. The phenolic acids were generally improved, but the flavonoids were more likely to decrease. The pivotal differentially expressed genes were involved in biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, flavonoid biosynthesis, porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism, etc. The gene-metabolite association was constructed and 44 hub genes highly related to quality ingredients accumulation and growth were identified, among which and the top 5 genes of the PPI network might be the key regulators. Conclusion This research provided key regulatory genes and differentially accumulating quality ingredients under NIR-CDs-treatment, which could provide a theoretical basis for expanding the applications of nanomaterial in industrial crop agriculture. Abstract Sarcopenia is a common age-related skeletal muscle disorder featuring the loss of muscle mass and function. In regard to tissue repair in the human body, scientists always consider the use of stem cells. In skeletal muscle, satellite cells (SCs) are adult stem cells that maintain tissue homeostasis and repair damaged regions after injury to preserve skeletal muscle integrity. Muscle-derived stem cells (MDSCs) and SCs are the two most commonly studied stem cell populations from skeletal muscle. To date, considerable progress has been achieved in understanding the complex associations between stem cells in muscle and the occurrence and treatment of sarcopenia. In this review, we first give brief introductions to sarcopenia, SCs and MDSCs. Then, we attempt to untangle the differences and connections between these two types of stem cells and further elaborate on the interactions between sarcopenia and stem cells. Finally, our perspectives on the possible application of stem cells for the treatment of sarcopenia in future are presented. Several studies emerging in recent years have shown that changes in the number and function of stem cells can trigger sarcopenia, which in turn leads to adverse influences on stem cells because of the altered internal environment in muscle. A better understanding of the role of stem cells in muscle, especially SCs and MDSCs, in sarcopenia will facilitate the realization of novel therapy approaches based on stem cells to combat sarcopenia.

BackgroundIsthmic papillary thyroid carcinoma (IPTC) is an aggressive thyroid cancer associated with a poor prognosis. Guidelines elaborating on the extent of surgery for IPTC are yet to be developed. This study aims to construct and validate a model to predict central lymph node metastasis (CLNM) in patients with IPTC, which could be used as a risk stratification tool to determine the best surgical approach for patients.MethodsElectronic medical records for patients diagnosed with isolated papillary thyroid carcinoma who underwent surgery at Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, from January 2010 to December 2021 were reviewed. All patients who underwent thyroidectomy with central neck dissection (CND) for isolated IPTC were included. We conducted univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses to assess risk factors for ipsilateral and contralateral CLNM and the number of CLNM in IPTC patients. Based on the analysis, the nomogram construction and internal validations were performed.ResultsA total of 147 patients with isolated IPTC were included. The occurrence of CLNM was 53.7% in the patients. We identified three predictors of ipsilateral CLNM, including age, gender, and size. For contralateral CLNM, three identified predictors were age, gender, and capsular invasion. Predictors for the number of CLNM included age, gender, capsular invasion, tumor size, and chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (CLT). The concordance index(C-index) of the models predicting ipsilateral CLNM, contralateral CLNM, 1-4 CLNM, and ≥5 CLNM was 0.779 (95%CI, 0.704, to 0.854), 0.779 (95%CI, 0.703 to 0.855), 0.724 (95%CI, 0.629 to 0.818), and 0.932 (95%CI, 0.884 to 0.980), respectively. The corresponding indices for the internal validation were 0.756 (95%CI, 0.753 to 0.758), 0.753 (95%CI, 0.750 to 0.756), 0.706 (95%CI, 0.702 to 0.708), and 0.920 (95%CI, 0.918 to 0.922). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, calibration, and decision curve analysis (DCA) results confirmed that the three nomograms could precisely predict CLNM in patients with isolated IPTC.ConclusionWe constructed predictive nomograms for CLNM in IPTC patients. A risk stratification scheme and corresponding surgical treatment recommendations were provided accordingly. Our predictive models can be used as a risk stratification tool to help clinicians make individualized surgical plans for their patients.

The development of InSAR satellite hardware and data processing technology enables us to rapidly obtain massive high spatial and temporal resolution surface deformation results. The abundant information helps geohazard detection, but also brings challenges for geohazard interpretation. InSAR geohazards intelligent detection methods based on deep learning can greatly improve the efficiency and precision of geohazards interpretation. However, these methods are usually limited by quality of the InSAR result that have various errors, such as decoherence error, topography residue and atmospheric delay. This study proposes a convolutional neural network incorporated an attention mechanism, referred to as DeforNet, which can effectively reduce the influences of the atmospheric delay and topography noises by introducing convolutional block attention module and depth-wise separable convolution. The new method can efficiently and accurately detect small and medium-scale geohazards from InSAR results. The comparison between the DeforNet with FCN, U-net and SegNet, using both synthetic and real samples, show that DeforNet has significant superiority in noise suppression and deformation identification. In the application of the whole Shanxi province, China, the DeforNet detected 1,553 geohazards with the minimum area of 0.21 km2. Our result shows that a strong spatial correlation between the location of geohazards and coal mining in this region. Within the coalfield, the number of identified geohazard accounts for 64.6 % of the total number in Shanxi. We also found that the identification accuracy of DeforNet is affected by the quality of the InSAR results, the scale of the geohazard and the wrap interval. DeforNet can serve to refine the detailed investigation of geohazards and promote the application of InSAR technology in geohazards prevention and mitigation.

On February 6, 2023 (local time), two earthquakes (Mw7.8 and Mw7.7) struck central and southern Turkey, causing extensive damage to several cities and claiming a toll of 40,000 lives. In this study, we propose a method for seismic building damage assessment and analysis by combining SAR amplitude and phase coherence change detection. We determined building damage in five severely impacted urban areas and calculated the damage ratio by measuring the urban area and the damaged area. The largest damage ratio of 18.93% is observed in Nurdagi, and the smallest ratio of 7.59% is found in Islahiye. We verified the results by comparing them with high-resolution optical images and AI recognition results from the Microsoft team. We also used pixel offset tracking (POT) technology and D-InSAR technology to obtain surface deformation using Sentinel-1A images and analyzed the relationship between surface deformation and post-earthquake urban building damage. The results show that Nurdagi has the largest urban average surface deformation of 0.48 m and Antakya has the smallest deformation of 0.09 m. We found that buildings in the areas with steeper slopes or closer to earthquake faults have higher risk of collapse. We also discussed the influence of SAR image parameters on building change recognition. Image resolution and observation geometry have a great influence on the change detection results, and the resolution can be improved by various means to raise the recognition accuracy. Our research findings can guide earthquake disaster assessment and analysis and identify influential factors of earthquake damage.

Abstract Background Fluorescent carbon-dots (CDs) with multifaceted advantages have provided hope for improvement of crop growth. Near infrared (NIR) CDs would be more competitive and promising than short-wavelength emissive CDs, which are not directly utilized by chloroplast. The molecular targets and underlying mechanism of these stimulative effects are rarely mentioned. Results NIR-CDs with good mono-dispersity and hydrophily were easily prepared by a one-step microwave-assisted carbonization manner, which showed obvious UV absorptive and far-red emissive properties. The chloroplast-CDs complexes could accelerate the electron transfer from photosystem II (PS II) to photosystem I (PS I). NIR-CDs exhibited a concentration-dependent promotion effect on N. benthamiana growth by strengthening photosynthesis. We firstly demonstrated that potential mechanisms behind the photosynthesis-stimulating activity might be related to up-regulated expression of the photosynthesis and chloroplast synthesis related genes, among which PsbP and PsiK genes are the key regulators. Conclusion These results illustrated that NIR-CDs showed great potential in the applications to increase crop yields through ultraviolet light harvesting and elevated photosynthesis efficiency. This work would provide a theoretical basis for the understanding and applications of the luminescent nanomaterials (not limited to CDs) in the sunlight conversion-related sustainable agriculture. Abstract Background Visual art training is a student-led approach using Western art pieces as the main teaching resources. It has been developed and applied in nursing and medical education in the United States. This study aimed to adapt visual art training to Chinese cultural context, then to compare the efficacy of the culturally-tailored visual art training versus traditional education on observational and diagnostic skills at 3-month follow-up among Chinese nursing students in master program. Methods This study included Phase 1 (cultural adaptation) and Phase 2 (3-month efficacy evaluation). It was conducted from June to September, 2019. In Phase 1, cultural barriers were identified and cultural adaptation strategy were made based on two focus group interviews. Phase 2 was a randomized controlled trial in a local museum. A total of 106 first-year nursing students in master program were randomized to the intervention group or the control group. Both groups received traditional education. In addition, intervention group received a visual art training (including a field-guided museum visit with observation and debriefing of Chinese oil paintings and clinical images, four teaching hours). Data were collected for both groups at baseline and 3-month follow-up on the observational and diagnostic skills measured by clinical image tests. Learning satisfaction with the visual art training was investigated among 53 intervention students and teaching satisfaction was done in 10 staff members by self-administered questionnaires. Results In phase 1, we adapted a culturally-tailored visual art training for nursing students in China. Observational skills of the intervention group increased significantly compared with the control group 3 months after the training (p .05). In general, all participants and staff were satisfied with the visual art training, especially the selected Chinese oil paintings and the student-led teaching process, but 34% (n = 18) were not satisfied with the long distance from the museum. Conclusions A culturally-tailored visual art training with great acceptability and feasibility was implemented in China. It had a sustained positive effect on improving the observational skills of Chinese nursing students. This study can be used for a reference to introduce visual art training to nursing students or nurses from other cultures. Abstract Background Older patients suffering from multimorbidity are at high risk of medication nonadherence. It has been well established that self-management support is an effective strategy to enhance medication adherence for patients with chronic conditions. However, little is known about the effect of the medication self-management intervention in older patients with multimorbidity. This paper presents the protocol for a study that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse-led medication self-management intervention in improving medication adherence and health outcomes for community-dwelling older patients with multimorbidity. Methods The study protocol follows the recommendations of the Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials 2013 statement. This study is a multicentre, single-blind, two-arm randomised controlled trial. Older patients with multimorbidity will be recruited from three community health centres in Changsha, China. A total of 136 participants will be randomly allocated to receive usual care or usual care plus the medication self-management intervention. The intervention will be delivered by community nurses. The 6-week intervention includes three face-to-face education sessions and two weekly follow-up phone calls. Participants in the control group continue to receive all respects of usual care offered by community healthcare providers, including chronic disease management, drug prescription, referral to hospital specialists, health education and consultations regarding patients’ diseases and treatments during centre visits. The primary outcome is medication adherence as measured by the 5-item Medication Adherence Report Scale. Secondary outcomes include medication self-management capacity (medication knowledge, medication beliefs, medication social support, medication skills, and medication self-efficacy), treatment experiences (medication treatment satisfaction and treatment burden), quality of life, and utilisation of healthcare services. All outcomes will be measured at baseline, immediately post-intervention, and at 3-month post-intervention. Discussion This study will provide evidence about the effectiveness of a medication self-management intervention, delivered by nurses, for older patients with multimorbidity and adherence problems. It is expected that the results of the study, if proven effective in improving patients’ adherence and health outcomes, will provide evidence-based self-management support strategies for healthcare providers in routine chronic disease management in community settings. In February 2023, Mw 7.8 and Mw 7.7 earthquakes struck southeastern Turkey. Generating a coseismic 3D deformation field that can directly reflect the characteristics of surface deformation is important for revealing the movement mode of a seismogenic fault and analyzing the focal mechanism. Optical image sub-pixel correlation (SPC) only captures deformation in the horizontal direction, and SAR image pixel offset tracking (POT) obtains range deformation that is not sensitive to north–south deformation signals. Thus, neither of them can capture the complete 3D deformation alone. Combining them may be able to allow the monitoring of 3D deformation. In this study, we used Sentinel-2 optical images to obtain the horizontal deformation (east–west and north–south) and Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 data to extract the range and azimuth offsets. The least-squares method was used to fuse the optical and SAR offsets to obtain the 3D deformation field of the 2023 Turkey earthquake sequence, which indicates that the two events were both left-lateral strike-slip earthquakes. The surface deformation caused by the two large earthquakes is mainly in the east–west direction. In the vertical direction, the two earthquakes caused a small-magnitude uplift and subsidence. The findings in this paper can be used as a reference for the study of coseismic 3D deformation.

Abstract Background Host genetic factors such as single nucleotide variations may play a crucial role in the onset and progression of HBV-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). However, the underlying genomic copy number variations (CNVs) involved in the pathology are currently unclear. Methods We genotyped two cohorts with 389 HBV-related ACLF patients and 391 asymptomatic HBV carriers (AsCs), and then carried out CNV-based global burden analysis and a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Results For 1874 rare CNVs, HBV-related ACLF patients exhibited a high burden of deletion segments with a size of 100–200 kb (P value = 0.04), and the related genes were significantly enriched in leukocyte transendothelial migration pathway (P value = 4.68 × 10–3). For 352 common CNVs, GWAS predicted 17 significant association signals, and the peak one was a duplication segment located on 1p36.13 (~ 38 Kb, P value = 1.99 × 10–4, OR = 2.66). The associated CNVs resulted in more copy number of pro-inflammatory genes (MST1L, DEFB, and HCG4B) in HBV-related ACLF patients than in AsC controls. Conclusions Our results suggested that the impact of host CNV on HBV-related ACLF may be through decreasing natural immunity and enhancing host inflammatory response during HBV infection. The findings highlighted the potential importance of gene dosage on excessive hepatic inflammation of this disease.

Food is an important factor affecting the treatment of patients with early gastric cancer (EGC). We have established a hospital cohort to guide dietary patterns and observe the health status of patients with EGC after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) after dietary modification. A total of 273 patients with EGC who underwent ESD were recruited to the cohort. They were given dietary instruction and education through a dietary manual and were followed up for 12 months. If the dietary pattern changed to the “traditional food” pattern (high consumption of vegetables, wheat products, and red meat) after the nutritional guidance, subjects were defined as the improvement diet group. Dietary patterns focused on “alcohol and fish” (drink a lot of wine and beer and eating freshwater and marine fish) or “coarse cereals” (mainly whole grains, beans and poultry) were the main ones in the unimproved diet group. The nutritional status, gastric mucosa, and gastrointestinal symptoms of the two groups of patients before and after the dietary instruction were compared. Compared with the unimproved diet group, the endoscopic performance score and the symptom score in the improved diet group were decreased by an average of 1.31 and 1.90, respectively. Except for lymphocyte count (P = 0.227), total protein (P < 0.000), albumin (P = 0.003), globulin (P = 0.014), red blood cell count (P < 0.000), and hemoglobin (P < 0.000) values were improved to varying degrees. After changing the diet, the intake of wheat products and vegetables in the improved diet group increased by 15.58 and 17.52%, respectively, while the intake of alcohol, fish, and pickled products was reduced by 43.36, 36.43, and 31.41%, respectively. After 1 year of dietary adjustment, the nutritional status, gastric mucosa, and gastrointestinal symptoms of patients with EGC after ESD eating the "traditional food" diet were all improved.

ABSTRACT The dynamics of quasispecies afford RNA viruses a great fitness on cell tropism and host range. To study the quasispecies features and the intra-host evolution of SARS-CoV-2, we collected nine confirmed patients and sequenced the haplotypes of spike gene using a single-molecule real-time platform. Fourteen samples were extracted from sputum, nasopharyngeal swabs, or stool, which in total produced 283,655 high-quality circular consensus sequences. We observed a stable quasispecies structure that one master mutant (mean abundance ∼0.70), followed by numerous minor mutants (mean abundance ∼1.21 × 10−3). Under high selective pressure, minor mutants may obtain a fitness advantage and become the master ones. The later predominant substitution D614G existed in the minor mutants of more than one early patient. An epidemic variant had a possibility to be independently originated from multiple hosts. The mutant spectrums covered ∼85% amino acid variations of public genomes (GISAID; frequency ≥ 0.1) and likely provided an advantage mutation pool for the current/future epidemic variants. Notably, 32 of 35 collected antibody escape substitutions were preexistent in the early quasispecies. Virus populations in different tissues/organs revealed potentially independent replications. The quasispecies complexity of sputum samples was significantly lower than that of nasopharyngeal swabs (P = 0.02). Evolution analysis revealed that three continuous S2 domains (HR1, CH, and CD) had undergone a positive selection. Cell fusion-related domains may play a crucial role in adapting to the intrahost immune system. Our findings suggested that future epidemiologic investigations and clinical interventions should consider the quasispecies information that has missed by routine single consensus genome. IMPORTANCE RNA virus population in a host does not consist of a consensus single haplotype but rather an ensemble of related sequences termed quasispecies. The dynamics of quasispecies afford SARS-CoV-2 a great ability on genetic fitness during intrahost evolution. The process is likely achieved by changing the genetic characteristics of key functional genes, such as the spike glycoprotein. Previous studies have applied the next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology to evaluate the quasispecies of SARS-CoV-2, and results indicated a low genetic diversity of the spike gene. However, the NGS platform cannot directly obtain the full haplotypes without assembling, and it is also difficult to predict the extremely low-frequency variations. Therefore, we introduced a single-molecule real-time technology to directly obtain the haplotypes of the RNA population and further study the quasispecies features and intrahost evolution of the spike gene.

Background and Objectives: This study aims to detect the prevalence of sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults in Hunan Province, discuss factors related to lifestyle, and provide a reliable basis for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. Materials and Methods: In this study, a total of 1040 community-dwelling adults ≥ 60 years were examined for sarcopenia using a cluster stratified random sampling method, which was defined using the diagnostic criteria recommended by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) from September 2019 to March 2020. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was applied to determine the correlation between sarcopenia and smoking, drinking, nutritional status, physical activity, and sleep quality. Results: A total of 27.1% of the older adults were diagnosed with sarcopenia, with rates of 26.2% in men and 25.2% in women. Multiple logistic regression showed that advanced age (OR = 2.480, 95% CI: 1.730, 3.553), the risk of malnutrition (OR = 2.085, 95% CI: 1.440, 3.019), and malnutrition (OR = 1.212, 95% CI: 0.304, 4.834) were risk factors for sarcopenia. No falls in the previous year (OR = 0.616, 95% CI: 1.885, 1.209), normal weight (OR = 0.228, 95% CI: 0.109, 0.475), overweight (OR = 0.030, 95% CI: 0.013, 0.069), moderate physical activity (OR = 0.593, 95% CI: 0.377, 0.933), or high physical activity (OR = 0.417, 95% CI: 0.230, 0.755) were identified as protective factors for sarcopenia. Conclusions: The prevalence of sarcopenia was high among older adults in the community in Hunan Province. In addition, we found that lifestyle is an important factor in sarcopenia.

The Sentinel-1A/B satellite launched by European Space Agency (ESA) in 2014 provides a huge amount of free Terrain Observation by Progressive Scans (TOPS) data with global coverage to the public. The TOPS data have a frame width of 250 km and have been widely used in surface deformation monitoring. However, traditional Multi-Temporal Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (MT-InSAR) methods require large computer memory and time when processing full resolution data with large width and long strips. In addition, they hardly correct atmospheric delays and orbital errors accurately over a large area. In order to solve these problems, this study proposes a data partition strategy based on MT-InSAR methods. We first process the partitioned images over a large area by traditional MT-InSAR method, then stitch the deformation results into a complete deformation result by correcting the offsets of adjacent partitioned images. This strategy is validated in a flat urban area (Changzhou City in Jiangsu province, China), and a mountainous region (Qijiang in Chongqing City, China). Compared with traditional MT-InSAR methods, the precision of the results obtained by the new strategy is improved by about 5% for Changzhou city and about 15% for Qijiang because of its advantage in atmospheric delay correction. Furthermore, the proposed strategy needs much less memory and time than traditional methods. The total time needed by the traditional method is about 20 h, and by the proposed method, is about 8.7 h, when the number of parallel processing is 5 in the Changzhou city case. The time will be further reduced when the number of parallel processes increases.

Improving peroral delivery efficiency is always a persistent goal for both small-molecule and macromolecular drug development. However, intestinal mucus barrier which greatly impedes drug-loaded nanoparticles penetration is commonly overlooked. Therefore, in this study, taking fluorescent labeled PLGA (poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid)) nanoparticles as a tool, the influence of anionic and nonionic surfactants on mucus penetration ability of nanoparticles and their mucus barrier regulating ability were studied. The movement of PLGA nanoparticles in mucus was tracked by multiple particles tracking method (MPT). Alteration of mucus properties by addition of surfactants was evaluated by rheology and morphology study. Rat intestinal villus penetration study was used to further evaluate penetration enhancement of nanoparticles. The effective diffusivities of the nanoparticles in surfactants pretreated mucus were increased by 2–3 times and the mucus barrier regulating capacity was also surfactant type dependent. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) increased the complex viscosity and viscoelastic properties of mucus, but poloxamer presented a decreased trend. Tween 80 maintained the rheological property of the mucus. With the mucus barrier regulated by surfactants, the penetration of nanoparticles in intestinal villus was obviously increased. In summary, the mucus penetration ability of nanoparticles could be enhanced by altering mucus microenvironment with surfactants. Tween 80 which largely retains the original mucus rheology and morphology properties may be a promising candidate for facilitating nanoparticle penetration through the mucus barrier with good safety profile. In order to ensure the safe and reliable operation of a high-speed railway, the precise positioning of the mid-point anchor in the catenary is very important. In view of the two problems in the calculation of the mid-point anchor position of the catenary in a long ramp section, the calculation accuracy is low, and the calculation of the central anchor clamp position is lacking. In this study, the predetermined location of the mid-point anchor is chosen based on the mid-point anchor location principle and the line condition, and the range of the allowable error of the mid-point anchor setting is determined according to the predetermined position of the mid-point anchor. Secondly, by considering the impact of the line ramp and using the measured span length, the tension difference of the clue in the direction of the line is calculated. Then, the theoretical location of the mid-point anchor clamp is determined using the downhill component and the tension difference. Finally, the theoretical position of the clamp is corrected according to the setting of the dropper to obtain the corrected position of the clamp. An FEM (finite element method) of the catenary is established in ANSYS software to calculate the height difference between the messenger cable and the contact wire at the point of the mid-point anchor setting, and then the length of the mid-point anchor rope is obtained. Through the calculation of actual case data, the maximum value of the relative error of the location of the mid-point anchor obtained by this proposed method is very small compared with the actual position, which verifies the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteases (TIMPs) are inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that regulate tissue extracellular matrix (ECM) turnover. TIMP4 is highly expressed in adipose tissue, its levels are further elevated following high-fat diet, but its role in obesity is unknown. Eight-week old wild-type (WT) and Timp4-knockout (Timp4 −/−) mice received chow or high fat diet (HFD) for twelve weeks. Timp4 −/− mice exhibited a higher food intake but lower body fat gain. Adipose tissue of Timp4 −/– -HFD mice showed reduced hypertrophy and fibrosis compared to WT-HFD mice. Timp4 −/– -HFD mice were also protected from HFD-induced liver and skeletal muscle triglyceride accumulation and dyslipidemia. Timp4 −/−-HFD mice exhibited reduced basic metabolic rate and energy expenditure, but increased respiratory exchange ratio. Increased free fatty acid excretion was detected in Timp4 −/−-HFD compared to WT-HFD mice. CD36 protein, the major fatty acid transporter in the small intestine, increased with HFD in WT but not in Timp4 −/− mice, despite a similar rise in Cd36 mRNA in both genotypes. Consistently, HFD increased enterocyte lipid content only in WT but not in Timp4 −/− mice. Our study reveals that absence of TIMP4 can impair lipid absorption and the high fat diet-induced obesity in mice possibly by regulating the proteolytic processing of CD36 protein in the intestinal enterocytes.

A new emerging disease called “translucent post-larvae disease” (TPD) or “glass post-larvae disease” (GPD) of Penaeus vannamei, characterized by pale or colorless hepatopancreas and digestive tract, has become an urgent threat to the shrimp farming industry. Following this clue that treatment of an antibacterial agent could alleviate the disease, systematic investigation of the potential infectious agent of TPD was conducted using bacterial identification and artificial challenge tests to fulfill Koch’s postulates. A dominant bacterial isolate, Vp-JS20200428004-2, from the moribund individuals was isolated and identified as Vibrio parahaemolyticus based on multi-locus sequence analysis. However, Vp-JS20200428004-2 differed from the V. parahaemolyticus that caused typical acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease. Immersion challenge tests revealed that Vp-JS20200428004-2 could cause 100% mortality within 40 h at a dose of 1.83 × 106 CFU/mL, and experimental infected shrimp showed similar clinical signs of TPD. The Vp-JS20200428004-2 could be re-isolated and identified from the experimental infected individuals. Moreover, histopathological analysis of diseased samples indicated that Vp-JS20200428004-2 caused severe necrosis and sloughing of epithelial cells of the hepatopancreas and midgut in shrimp individuals both naturally and experimentally infected. Our present results indicated that Vp-JS20200428004-2 is a highly virulent infectious agent associated with the TPD and deserves further attention.
