A new species of gekkonid, Hemiphyllodactylus laowozhenensis sp. nov., is described based on three specimens from Lushui City, Yunnan, China. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by a significant genetic divergence of greater than 4.8% in the mitochondrial ND2 gene and a combination of the following characters: maximum SVL of 38.5 mm; 10 or 11 chin scales; enlarged postmentals; 6 circumnasal scales; 2 or 3 internasal scales; 8 or 9 supralabial scales; 8 or 9 infralabial scales; 15 or 16 dorsal scales; 9 ventral scales; a manual lamellar formula of 3-4-4-4 and a pedal lamellar formula of 3(4)-4-4-4; 26–28 precloacal and femoral pore-bearing scales contiguous in males; 1–3 cloacal spur on each side; a dark postorbital stripe extending to at least base of neck; dorsolateral light–colored spots on trunk present; dark ventrolateral stripe on trunk present; dark dorsal transverse blotches present; and a dark and brown postsacral mark bearing anteriorly projecting arms.

Abstract Precise and long-term electroanalysis at the single-cell level is crucial for the accurate diagnosis and monitoring of brain diseases. The reliable protection in areas outside the signal acquisition points at sharp ultramicroelectrode (UME) tips has a significant impact on the sensitivity, fidelity, and stability of intracellular neural signal recording. However, it is difficult for existing UMEs to achieve controllable exposure of the tip functional structure, which affects their ability to resist environmental interference and shield noise, resulting in unsatisfactory signal-to-noise ratio and signal fidelity of intracellular recordings. To address this issue, we chose a dense and electrochemically stable diamond-like carbon (DLC) film as the UME protection coating and developed a method to precisely control the exposed degree of the functional structure by directly fixed-point processing of the UME tip by the strong site-selectivity and good controllability of the atmospheric microplasma jet. By analyzing the interaction between the microplasma jet and the UME tip, as well as the changes in the removal length and microstructure of UME tips with processing time, the exposed tip length was precisely controlled down to the submicron scale. Biocompatibility experiments, electrochemical aging tests and real-time intracellular pH recording experiments have demonstrated that the DLC-UME with effective tip protection processed by microplasma jet has the potential to enable long-term detection of intracellular high-fidelity signals.

BackgroundThe pathological progression from liver injury to fibrosis is a hallmark of liver disease, with no effective strategies to halt this transition. Ginsenoside Rg1 has demonstrated a range of hepatoprotective properties; however, systematic preclinical evidence supporting its therapeutic potential for liver injury and fibrosis remains limited. Purpose. This study evaluated the efficacy and underlying mechanisms of ginsenoside Rg1 in animal models of liver injury and fibrosis, and providing a basis for future clinical investigation.MethodsA systematic review was conducted on preclinical studies published in PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases up to 1 August 2024, adhereing to rigorous quality standards. The methodological quality was assessed using SYRCLE’s risk of bias tool. Meta-analysis and subgroup analysis were performed using Revman 5.4 software, while publication bias was evaluated through funnel plots and Egger’s test in STATA 15.0 software. Additionally, a time-dose interval curve was utilized to assess the dose-response relationship and identify the effective dose of ginsenoside Rg1 for treating liver injury and fibrosis.ResultsTwenty-four trials involving 423 animals were included. The findings indicated that ginsenoside Rg1 significantly improved liver function markers (ALT and AST), reduced pathological indicators associated with liver injury and fibrosis, and lowered liver fibrosis-related markers (α-SMA, HYP, and PCIII). Furthermore, it exhibited beneficial effects on mechanistic indicators of inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis, compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Time-dose interval analysis revealed that the effective dose range of ginsenoside Rg1 was between 4 and 800 mg/kg/d.ConclusionRg1 at a dose of 4–800 mg/kg/d mitigates the progression of liver injury to fibrosis via anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and anti-apoptotic pathways.Systematic Review Registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/, identifier CRD 42024557878.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver condition closely associated with metabolic syndrome, with its incidence rate continuously rising globally. Recent studies have shown that the development of NAFLD is associated with insulin resistance, lipid metabolism disorder, oxidative stress and endoplasmic reticulum stress. Therapeutic strategies for NAFLD include lifestyle modifications, pharmacological treatments, and emerging biological therapies; however, there is currently no specific drug to treat NAFLD. However Chinese herb medicine (CHM) has shown potential in the treatment of NAFLD due to its unique therapeutic concepts and methods for centuries in China. This review aims to summarize the pathogenesis of NAFLD and some CHMs that have been shown to have therapeutic effects on NAFLD, thus enriching the scientific connotation of TCM theories and facilitating the exploration of TCM in the treatment of NAFLD.

The karst landform in Yunnan Province, China, represents one of the most biodiverse regions for Hemiphyllodactylus. Previous research has revealed that the karst forests in this province host a greater diversity of Hemiphyllodactylus than previously acknowledged. However, substantial fundamental data essential for taxonomic and biogeographical studies are lacking. We conducted extensive surveys for Hemiphyllodactylus in the Yunnan Province that led to the discovery of three new species from Menglian Dai, Lahu, and Wa Autonomous County and Jinghong City based on morphological and genetic data. A phylogenetic reconstruction based on the ND2 gene (1038 bp) placed the three new species into clade 3 and clade 4 of Agung et al. The uncorrected genetic pairwise distance of the Menglian specimens were greater than 5.7%, and those of the Jinghong City specimens were greater than 5.2% and 8.5%, respectively. They could be distinguished from their congeners by body size, chin scales, internasal scales, ventral scales, dorsal scales, and the total number of femoral and precloacal pores. Furthermore, we update the distributional knowledge of the known species.

Background: Pneumococcal disease (PD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in young children in Asia and globally. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) have significantly reduced the burden of PD when included in pediatric national immunization programs (NIPs). This study estimates the clinical and economic burden of PD due to serotypes contained in different PCVs in children aged < 5 years in eight Asian countries/territories. Methods: Based on published data, a cohort-based decision analytic model was used to estimate annual PD cases, deaths, and direct medical costs associated with serotypes contained in PCV10, PCV13, PCV15, and PCV20. Results: PD incidence rates were lower in regions with PCV13 in their NIP than those without. Serotypes contained in higher but not lower valency PCVs resulted in a significant incremental clinical and economic burden, although the difference between PCV13 and PCV15 serotypes was generally small. Moving from PCV13 to PCV20 was estimated to result in greater clinical and economic burden reductions. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the remaining and incremental burden of PD from PCV10 to PCV20 serotypes in young children in selected Asian regions. Extending NIP access to higher-valency PCVs with broader serotype coverage and improving vaccine uptake will help prevent morbidity and deaths and save healthcare costs.

Grain refinement via severe plastic deformation (SPD) can induce the decomposition of Al–Zn supersaturated solid solution, resulting in strain softening rather than hardening. So far, it is very challenging to improve the strength of binary Al–Zn alloy by refining grains through SPD. Herein, a single-phase supersaturated solid solution nanostructure with relaxed grain boundaries has been successfully generated in Al–21.7 at% Zn alloy by cryogenic high-pressure torsion. Instead of softening, giant hardening is achieved. The nanocrystalline Al–Zn alloy with grain size of 15 nm has an ultrahigh yield strength of about 642 MPa.

ABSTRACTRefining grains to sub-10 nm size is extremely difficult in pure aluminum due to its high stacking fault energy and low melting point. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate that Schwarz crystal (SC) structure with minimal interfaces constrained by coherent twin boundaries was induced in extremely fine grains (6 nm) of pure aluminum (99.995%) under extremely high shear strain via cryogenic high-pressure torsion. The SC structure exhibits an unprecedented hardness of 2.51 GPa and keeps stable up to 928 K (about 0.99 Tm).

To reduce the mass abrasion of AerMet100 ultra-high strength steel projectiles at increasing velocities, surface mechanical grinding treatment (SMGT) was employed to prepare a gradient nanostructure (GNS) on the AerMet100 surface. The microstructure of the GNS were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nanoindentation. It was found that the gradient nano-crystal structure was successfully prepared, and the martensite plate width was reduced to about 30 nm. As the distance from the surface depth increased, the plate size gradually increased, with the depth of the grain refinement layer measuring approximately 300 μm. The microhardness of the GNS AerMet100 was 870 Hv0.025, which was approximately 40% higher than that of the AerMet100 substrate. Additionally, the hardness was observed to decrease with increasing GNS depth. The friction and wear behavior of coarse grained (CG) AerMet100 and GNS AerMet100 were investigated. The results showed that their friction coefficients were similar, but wear volumes of GNS AerMet100 were smaller than those of CG AerMet100, the wear mechanisms of two surfaces were predominantly abrasive and adhesive wear. Furthermore, the projectiles penetration test showed that the mass loss of GNS AerMet100 was significantly lower than that of CG AerMet100 under similar velocity condition. Within the velocity range of 1200–1750 m/s, the degree of erosion and wear loss of the CG AerMet100 and GNS AerMet100 projectile noses increased with increasing penetration velocity, and the wear mechanism was mainly abrasive wear.

Abstract The realization of graphene gapped states with large on/off ratios over wide doping ranges remains challenging. Here, we investigate heterostructures based on Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) atop few-layered CrOCl, exhibiting an over-1-GΩ-resistance insulating state in a widely accessible gate voltage range. The insulating state could be switched into a metallic state with an on/off ratio up to 107 by applying an in-plane electric field, heating, or gating. We tentatively associate the observed behavior to the formation of a surface state in CrOCl under vertical electric fields, promoting electron–electron (e–e) interactions in BLG via long-range Coulomb coupling. Consequently, at the charge neutrality point, a crossover from single particle insulating behavior to an unconventional correlated insulator is enabled, below an onset temperature. We demonstrate the application of the insulating state for the realization of a logic inverter operating at low temperatures. Our findings pave the way for future engineering of quantum electronic states based on interfacial charge coupling.

Abstract Introduction Studies that estimate the economic burden of pediatric pneumococcal disease often only report direct medical costs and omit indirect non-medical costs. Given these indirect costs are not included in most calculations, the full economic burden attributable to pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) serotypes is often underestimated. This study seeks to quantify the full broader economic burden of pediatric pneumococcal disease associated with PCV serotypes. Methods We conducted a reanalysis of a previous study where non-medical costs associated with caregiving for a child with pneumococcal disease are considered. The annual indirect non-medical economic burden attributed to PCV serotypes was subsequently calculated for 13 countries. We included five countries with 10-valent (PCV10) national immunization programs (NIPs) (Austria, Finland, The Netherlands, New Zealand, and Sweden) and eight countries with 13-valent (PCV13) NIPs (Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Spain, and the UK). Input parameters were derived from published literature. Indirect costs were inflated to 2021 values in US dollars (USD). Results The total annual indirect economic burden associated with pediatric pneumococcal diseases attributable to PCV10, PCV13, the 15-valent (PCV15), and the 20-valent (PCV20) serotypes were $46.51 million, $158.95 million, $223.00 million, and $413.97 million, respectively. The five countries with PCV10 NIPs bear a greater societal burden associated with PCV13 serotypes, whereas the residual societal burden in the eight countries with PCV13 NIPs was primarily attributable to non-PCV13 serotypes. Conclusion The inclusion of non-medical costs nearly tripled the total economic burden compared with only including direct medical costs estimated from a previous study. The results from this reanalysis can help inform decision-makers on the broader economic societal burden associated with PCV serotypes and the need for higher-valent PCVs.

Since its initial identification in 1986, Lyme disease has been clinically diagnosed in 29 provinces in China; however, national incidence data are lacking. To summarize Lyme disease seropositivity data among persons across China, we conducted a systematic literature review of Chinese- and English-language journal articles published during 2005‒2020. According to 72 estimates that measured IgG by using a diagnostic enzyme-linked assay (EIA) alone, the seropositivity point prevalence with a fixed-effects model was 9.1%. A more conservative 2-tier testing approach of EIA plus a confirmatory Western immunoblot (16 estimates) yielded seropositivity 1.8%. Seropositivity by EIA for high-risk exposure populations was 10.0% and for low-risk exposure populations was 4.5%; seropositivity was highest in the northeastern and western provinces. Our analysis confirms Lyme disease prevalence, measured by seropositivity, in many Chinese provinces and populations at risk. This information can be used to focus prevention measures in provinces where seropositivity is high.

Probing the direct effect of grain boundaries as active catalytic sites is very challenging. Here, the authors reveal that the d z 2 orbital energy level of Mo atoms in grain boundaries exhibits an intrinsic relationship with the hydrogen evolution activity.

Background: Observational studies have shown that anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) therapy may be beneficial for patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Nevertheless, because of the methodological restrictions of traditional observational studies, it is a challenge to make causal inferences. This study involved a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis to investigate the causal link between nine TNFs and COVID-19 severity using publicly released genome-wide association study summary statistics.Methods: Summary statistics for nine TNFs (21,758 cases) were obtained from a large-scale genome-wide association study. Correlation data between single-nucleotide polymorphisms and severe COVID-19 (18,152 cases vs. 1,145,546 controls) were collected from the COVID-19 host genetics initiative. The causal estimate was calculated by inverse variance-weighted (IVW), MR–Egger, and weighted median methods. Sensitivity tests were conducted to assess the validity of the causal relationship.Results: Genetically predicted TNF receptor superfamily member 6 (FAS) positively correlated with the severity of COVID-19 (IVW, odds ratio = 1.10, 95% confidence interval = 1.01–1.19, p = 0.026), whereas TNF receptor superfamily member 5 (CD40) was protective against severe COVID-19 (IVW, odds ratio = 0.92, 95% confidence interval = 0.87–0.97, p = 0.002).Conclusion: Genetic evidence from this study supports that the increased expression of FAS is associated with the risk of severe COVID-19 and that CD40 may have a potential protective effect against COVID-19.

A terahertz (THz) fiber is of interest due to low loss and easy beam shaping. Graphene plays an important role in modulating the optical signal. In this paper, a graphene-coated D-shaped THz fiber modulator is proposed. The performance of the proposed modulator is investigated by the finite element method. The inference of geometric parameters of the structure on the proposed modulator is also analyzed, and an optimal structure is obtained. Simulation results show that the confinement loss and the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) can be tuned by adjusting the Fermi level of graphene. The proposed THz fiber modulator shows potential in future THz fiber communications.

Switching a vaccine for another on a pediatric national immunization program is often done for the betterment of society. However, if poorly implemented, switching vaccines could result in suboptimal transitions with negative effects. A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the existing knowledge from identifiable documents on implementation challenges of pediatric vaccine switches and the real-world impact of those challenges. Thirty-three studies met the inclusion criteria. We synthesized three themes: vaccine availability, vaccination program deployment, and vaccine acceptability. Switching pediatric vaccines can pose unforeseen challenges to health-care systems worldwide and additional resources are often required to overcome those challenges. Yet, the magnitude of the impact, especially economic and societal, was frequently under-researched with variability in reporting. Therefore, an efficient vaccine switch requires a thorough consideration of the added benefits of replacing the existing vaccine, preparation, planning, additional resource allocation, implementation timing, public–private partnerships, outreach campaigns, and surveillance for program evaluation.

The high specific capacity of transition metal sulfides (TMSs) opens up a promising new development direction for lithium-ion batteries with high energy storage. However, the poor conductivity and serious volume expansion during charge and discharge hinder their further development. In this work, trimetallic sulfide Zn–Co–Fe–S@nitrogen-doped carbon (Zn–Co–Fe–S@N–C) polyhedron composite with a core–shell structure is synthesized through a simple self-template method using ZnCoFe–ZIF as precursor, followed by a dopamine surface polymerization process and sulfidation during high-temperature calcination. The obvious space between the internal core and the external shell of the Zn–Co–Fe–S@N–C composites can effectively alleviate the volume expansion and shorten the diffusion path of Li ions during charge and discharge cycles. The nitrogen-doped carbon shell not only significantly improves the electrical conductivity of the material, but also strengthens the structural stability of the material. The synergistic effect between polymetallic sulfides improves the electrochemical reactivity. When used as an anode in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the prepared Zn–Co–Fe–S@N–C composite exhibits a high specific capacity retention (966.6 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles at current rate of 100 mA g−1) and good cyclic stability (499.17 mA h g−1 after 120 cycles at current rate of 2000 mA g−1).

Negative capacitance (NC) effects that could allow steep subthreshold swing (SS) in field-effect transistors (FETs) are still controversially discussed. Here the authors propose a model distinct from the NC concept, taking into account domain flips in multiple-domain ferroelectric/paraelectric gate stack FETs.

The stability of Cu with different average grain sizes prepared by surface mechanical grinding treatment were investigated under the conditions of isothermal annealing and uniaxial tension. In both conditions, experimental results revealed that the stability of the grains decreased with the decrease of grain size when the grain size was above 70–75 nm, while the stability of the grains increased with the decrease of grain size when the grain size was below 70–75 nm. The grains of about 70–75 nm in size showed the worst stability in both thermal and mechanical conditions due to having the highest level of average atom free energy and their large amount of high energy grain boundary with large curvature. This size was very close to the calculated smallest size achievable by severe plastic deformation based on the grain refinement mechanism of dislocation evolution under present processing condition, at which both the highest density of dislocation and highest energy should be produced and induces poor stability. Below 70 nm, the deformation mechanism of nanograined Cu was transformed into a partial dislocation motion, which activated mechanically induced grain boundary (GB) relaxation accompanied by GB flattening and GB energy decrease and resulted in enhanced stability. This discovery offers the potential for developing nanograined metals with high strength and high stability.

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a metabolic disorder that often leads to other severe liver diseases, yet treatment options are limited. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is an important pathogenetic mechanism of NASH and plays a key role in tandem steatosis as well as liver inflammation. This study aims to develop a progressive NASH model through sustained lipid accumulation and to elucidate its molecular mechanism through IRE1α/TRAF2 complex. Male SD rats were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 4, 8, and 12 weeks to induce progressive NASH. MRNA sequencing and PPI analysis were used to screen core genes. Transmission electron microscopy, immunofluorescence staining, ELISA, qRT-PCR, and Western blotting were used at each time point to compare differences between each index of progressive NASH at 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Sustained lipid accumulation led to structural disruption of the ER, a reduction in ER number, and an increase of lipid droplet aggregation in hepatocytes. Persistent lipid accumulation led to a persistent increase in mRNA and protein expression of the IRE1α/TRAF2 complex, IKK/IκB/NF-κB signaling pathway and ASK1/JNK1 signaling pathway, and TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 also continued to increase. Persistent lipid accumulation led to a persistent exacerbation of ER stress and inflammation in progressive NASH via the IRE1α/TRAF2 complex.

In this paper, we develop a new class of conservative continuous-stage stochastic Runge–Kutta methods for solving stochastic differential equations with a conserved quantity. The order conditions of the continuous-stage stochastic Runge–Kutta methods are given based on the theory of stochastic B-series and multicolored rooted tree. Sufficient conditions for the continuous-stage stochastic Runge–Kutta methods preserving the conserved quantity of stochastic differential equations are derived in terms of the coefficients. Conservative continuous-stage stochastic Runge–Kutta methods of mean square convergence order 1 for general stochastic differential equations, as well as conservative continuous-stage stochastic Runge–Kutta methods of high order for single integrand stochastic differential equations, are constructed. Numerical experiments are performed to verify the conservative property and the accuracy of the proposed methods in the longtime simulation.

A growing body of evidence indicates that atherosclerosis is correlated with cerebral small vessel disease and contributes to cognitive decline. This study aimed to explore the characteristics and contributions of intracranial hemodynamics and carotid atherosclerosis to cognitive dysfunction in subjects with subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (SIVD). Notably, 44 patients with SIVD, 30 patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and 30 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited from our longitudinal MRI study for AD and SIVD (ChiCTR1900027943). The cerebral mean flow velocity (MFV) and pulsatility index (PI) of both anterior and posterior circulations, artery plaque, and lumen diameter in carotid arteries were investigated using transcranial Doppler and carotid ultrasound, respectively. Their correlations with cognitive function were analyzed in patients with dementia. Decreased MFV and increased PI were found in patients with SIVD and AD. Patients with SIVD showed lower MFV and higher PI in the bilateral posterior cerebral arteries compared to patients with AD. Increases in lumen diameter, number of arteries with plaque, and total carotid plaque score were found in patients with SIVD. The Mini-Mental State Examination score was positively correlated with the MFV and negatively correlated with the PI of most major cerebral arteries, while it was negatively correlated with the lumen diameter of the common carotid artery, number of arteries with plaque, and total carotid plaque score in patients with dementia. There were also correlations between these parameters of some arteries and memory and executive function. Our results provide additional evidence suggesting that the pathological changes in macrovascular structure and function are correlated with cognitive impairment in dementia patients with SIVD and to a lesser extent AD.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is considered a promising noninvasive therapeutic strategy in biomedicine, especially by utilizing low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in visible and near-infrared spectra to trigger biological responses. The major challenge of PDT in applications is the complicated and time-consuming biological methodological measurements in identification of light formulas for different diseases. Here, we demonstrate a rapid and label-free identification method based on artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted terahertz imaging for efficient light formulas in LLLT of acute lung injury (ALI). The gray histogram of terahertz images is developed as the biophysical characteristics to identify the therapeutic effect. Label-free terahertz imaging is sequentially performed using rapid super-resolution imaging reconstruction and automatic identification algorithm based on a voting classifier. The results indicate that the therapeutic effect of LLLT with different light wavelengths and irradiation times for ALI can be identified using this method with a high accuracy of 91.22% in 33 s, which is more than 400 times faster than the biological methodology and more than 200 times faster than the scanning terahertz imaging technology. It may serve as a new tool for the development and application of PDT.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has been applied in the field of human-computer interaction due to its advantages including the fact that it is non-invasive and has both low power consumption and a low cost. Previous work has focused on static gesture recognition based on EIT. Compared with static gestures, dynamic gestures are more informative and can achieve more functions in human-machine collaboration. In order to verify the feasibility of dynamic gesture recognition based on EIT, a traditional excitation drive pattern is optimized in this paper. The drive pattern of the fixed excitation electrode is tested for the first time to simplify the measurement process of the dynamic gesture. To improve the recognition accuracy of the dynamic gestures, a dual-channel feature extraction network combining a convolutional neural network (CNN) and gated recurrent unit (GRU), namely CG-SVM, is proposed. The new center distance loss is designed in order to simultaneously supervise the intra-class distance and inter-class distance. As a result, the discriminability of the confusing data is improved. With the new excitation drive pattern and classification network, the recognition accuracy of different interference data has increased by 2.7~14.2%. The new method has stronger robustness, and realizes the dynamic gesture recognition based on EIT for the first time.

Terahertz (THz) photonic crystal (PC) waveguides show promise as an efficient and versatile waveguiding platform for communication, sensing, and imaging. However, low-frequency THz PC waveguides with a low-cost and easy fabrication remain challenging. To address this issue, a THz PC waveguide with a lilac-shaped defect has been designed and fabricated by 3D printing based on stereolithography (SLA). The reflection and transmission characteristics of the proposed waveguide have been analyzed using the finite difference frequency domain (FDFD) method. The waveguide spectral response is further optimized by changing the distance of the lilac-shaped resonant cavities. Consistent with the results of numerical modeling, the measured results show that the waveguide performs a resonant reflection in the region of 0.2 to 0.3 THz and low-pass transmission in the 6G mobile communication window. Furthermore, in order to characterize the performance of the proposed waveguide, parameters have been analyzed, including the Q factor, resonant frequency, and bandwidth. This work supplies a novel pathway for the design and fabrication of a low-frequency THz PC waveguide with potential applications in communication, sensing, and imaging.

Membrane module integrity monitoring is essential in the water treatment process. An intelligent detection method for membrane integrity based on array impedance measurement is proposed in the paper. The boundary voltage is collected in real time through the designed electrical sensor array. The Deep Neural Networks (DNN) is used for analyzing the degree of membrane damage based on collected voltage data. In our experiment, six kinds of membrane status are designed to verify the sensors and detection accuracy. Compared with traditional probe electrodes, electrical sensor arrays can obtain the overall condition of membrane inside the pipe without invasion. The membrane state recognition method based on DNN discards the empirical judgment in the traditional measurement method, and realizes intelligent detection by means of deep learning. For the samples obtained from the experiment, the recognition accuracy of this method reaches 94.1%. To illustrate the universality of this method, we performed a real-time detection experiment. As a result, the accuracy of network identification reaches 93.8%.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) calculates the internal conductivity distribution of a body using electrical contact measurement and has become increasingly attractive in the biomedical field. However, the design of optimal tomography image reconstruction algorithms has not achieved an adequate level of progress and maturity. The spatial-temporal properties are crucial for the improvement of reconstruction quality and efficiency in dynamic EIT reconstruction. However, these properties have not been fully utilized in previous research. In this paper, a mathematical model for EIT reconstruction is built upon a combination of the low-rank and the sparsity theories. In addition to the low-rank method based on the nuclear norm constraint, the patch-based sparse method is also used to obtain the spatial features of a reconstructed image, according to the characteristic of an irregular boundary for the EIT image. The mathematical model of the new method is solved using the variable split (VS) algorithm. The imaging results are compared with the reconstruction results of the traditional algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate better performance of the new method compared with the traditional methods. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a technique that calculates the distribution of electrical impedance of a living body by measuring the surface voltage of the living body, which is available for continuous monitoring of the lung function to reduce the risk of intensive lung injury. The global inhomogeneity index (GI) is employed to assess the degree of ventilation homogeneity at different levels of lung injury. The GI values calculated in the current research are all based on two-dimensional EIT reconstruction images; however, this method does not correctly detect low levels of lung injury. In this paper, we establish a true 3D thorax model and propose a method for calculating the GI based on 3D EIT reconstruction images to evaluate lung injury. Simulations reveal that this method can accurately reflect the disease state of lung injury compared with the 2D GI calculation method, and even mild damage of lung injury can be adequately detected.

Nanolaminated structure with an average boundary spacing of 67 nm has been fabricated in copper by high-rate shear deformation at ambient temperature. The nanolaminated structure with an increased fraction of low angle grain boundaries exhibits a high microhardness of 2.1 GPa. The structure coarsening temperature is 180 K higher than that of its equiaxial nanograined counterpart. Formation of nanolaminated structure provides an alternative way to relax grain boundaries and to stabilize nanostructured metals with medium to low stacking faults energies besides activation of partial dislocations.

A Ni-26 at. %Mo alloy with a composite structure of nanocrystalline and amorphous was synthesized by pulse electrodeposition. The composite structure was composed of mixed regions of amorphous and nanograins divided by a nanocrystalline interface network, which significantly suppressed grain coarsening and shear banding that would otherwise deteriorate mechanical properties of extremely fine nanograined metal. Plastic strain induced significant crystallization accompanied by Mo diffusion from mixed regions to nanograined interfaces. As a result, the Ni-26 at. %Mo alloy exhibited a superior hardness to its nanograined counterparts. The present work demonstrates an example of enhancing mechanical performance with hybrid structures crossover from nanocrystalline to amorphous.

Pressure sensors have been widely used in electronic wearable devices and medical devices to detect tiny physical movements and mechanical deformation. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate desirable, comfortable wearing, and highly sensitive as well as fast responsive sensors to capture human body physiological signs. Here, a new capacitive flexible pressure sensor that is likely to solve this problem was constructed using thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer rubber (TPU) electrospinning nanofiber membranes as a stretchable substrate with the incorporation of silver nanowires (AgNWs) to build a composite dielectric layer. In addition, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were painted on the TPU membranes as flexible electrodes by screen printing to maintain the flexibility and breathability of the sensors. The flexible pressure sensor could detect tiny body signs; fairly small physical presses and mechanical deformation based on the variation in capacitance due to the synergistic effects of microstructure and easily altered composite permittivity of AgNW/TPU composite dielectric layers. The resultant sensors exhibited high sensitivity (7.24 kPa−1 within the range of 9.0 × 10−3 ~ 0.98 kPa), low detection limit (9.24 Pa), and remarkable breathability as well as fast responsiveness (

With the rapid development of CT technology, especially the higher resolution of CT machine and a sharp increase in the amount of slices, to extract and three-dimensionally display aortic dissection from the huge medical image data became a challenging task. In this paper, active shape model combined with spatial continuity was adopted to realize automatic reconstruction of aortic dissection. First, we marked aortic feature points from big data sample library and registered training samples to build a statistical model. Meanwhile, gray vectors were sampled by utilizing square matrix, which set the landmarks as the center. Posture parameters of the initial shape were automatically adjusted by the method of spatial continuity between CT sequences. The contrast experiment proved that the proposed algorithm could realize accurate aorta segmentation without selecting the interested region, and it had higher accuracy than GVF snake algorithm (93.29% versus 87.54% on aortic arch, 94.30% versus 89.25% on descending aorta). Aortic dissection membrane was extracted via Hessian matrix and Bayesian theory. Finally, the three-dimensional visualization of the aortic dissection was completed by volume rendering based on the ray casting method to assist the doctors in clinical diagnosis, which contributed to improving the success rate of the operations.

Flexible pressure sensors are attracting great interest from researchers and are widely applied in various new electronic equipment because of their distinct characteristics with high flexibility, high sensitivity, and light weight; examples include electronic skin (E-skin) and wearable flexible sensing devices. This review summarizes the research progress of flexible pressure sensors, including three kinds of transduction mechanisms and their respective research developments, and applications in the fields of E-skin and wearable devices. Furthermore, the challenges and development trends of E-skin and wearable flexible sensors are also briefly discussed. Challenges of developing high extensibility, high sensitivity, and flexible multi-function equipment still exist at present. Exploring new sensing mechanisms, seeking new functional materials, and developing novel integration technology of flexible devices will be the key directions in the sensors field in future.
