Abstract

Study on the upper ocean is of great significance to the global climate change and carbon cycle. Lidar can be used to effectively detect depth-resolved optical properties of the ocean. However, both theory and experiment of oceanic lidar are limited by complex multiple scattering. Several progresses by Zhejiang University will be illustrated in this paper: 1) a polarized lidar system was developed, and a Monte Carlo model and a radiative transfer model were established (Zhou, et al. remote sensing, 2019; Zhou, et al. Journal of remote sensing, 2019; Xu, et al. and Liu, et al. Journal of remote sensing, 2019); 2) Cross validations are demonstrated to verify the availability of the lidar system and models (Liu, et al. IEEE TGRS, 2019); 3) phase function effects on backscatter and attenuation are studied considering multiple scattering, respectively (Liu, et al. Optics Express, 2019). Oceanic lidar is proven to have great potential in marine studies.

Abstract

Multiple scattering is an inevitable effect in spaceborne oceanic lidar because of the large footprint size and the high optical density of seawater. The effective attenuation coefficient klidar in oceanic lidar equation, which indicates the influence of the multiple scattering effect on the formation of lidar returns, is an important parameter in the retrieval of inherent optical properties (IOPs) of seawater. In this paper, the nonlinearity of klidar and the relationships between klidar and the IOPs of seawater are investigated by solving the radiative transfer equation with an improved semianalytic Monte Carlo model. klidar is found to decrease exponentially with the increase of depth in homogeneous waters. klidar is given as an exponential function of depth and IOPs of seawater. The results in this paper can help to have a better understanding of the multiple scattering effect of spaceborne lidar and improve the retrieval accuracy of the IOPs of seawater using spaceborne lidar.

Abstract

Vertical distribution of phytoplankton is crucial for assessing the trophic status and primary production in inland waters. However, there is sparse information about phytoplankton vertical distribution due to the lack of sufficient measurements. Here, we report, to the best of our knowledge, the first Mie–fluorescence–Raman lidar (MFRL) measurements of continuous chlorophyll a(Chl-a) profiles as well as their parametrization in inland water. The lidar-measured Chl-aduring several experiments showed good agreement with the in situ data. A case study verified that MFRL had the potential to profile the Chl-aconcentration. The results revealed that the maintenance of subsurface chlorophyll maxima (SCM) was influenced by light and nutrient inputs. Furthermore, inspired by the observations from MFRL, an SCM model built upon surface Chl-aconcentration and euphotic layer depth was proposed with root mean square relative difference of 16.5% compared to MFRL observations, providing the possibility to map 3D Chl-adistribution in aquatic ecosystems by integrated active–passive remote sensing technology. Profiling and modeling Chl-aconcentration with MFRL are expected to be of paramount importance for monitoring inland water ecosystems and environments.

Abstract

Recent studies have shown an increase or even outbreaks of jellyfish in many bays and seas around the world, which has a negative impact on the marine ecological environment, marine fisheries, coastal tourism, nuclear safety and so on. In August 2017, the self-developed shipborne polarized oceanic lidar carried out experimental measurements in the Yellow Sea. Rich strongly scattered individual signals were observed. Combined with the video monitor information, the signals were determined to come from the jellyfish (Nemopilema nomurai), demonstrating the polarized oceanic lidar is available to realize the remote sensing detection of jellyfish. The results show that the optical properties of jellyfish in the same waters show clustering. The signal contrast distribution of jellyfish in different waters was similar, and the distribution of depolarization rate was different, indicating that the optical properties of jellyfish were closely related to the water environment where they lived. As a result, the polarized oceanic lidar can monitor the distribution and population changes of jellyfish efficiently, economically and accurately and its future promotion can improve the dynamic monitoring methods of jellyfish in Chinese waters.

Abstract

In this paper, a spaceborne oceanic lidar simulation system used semianalytic Monte Carlo method was developed. The system can simulate the lidar returns of the atmosphere and the ocean with different optical properties through entering the parameters of the lidar system and the environmental parameters. At the same time, a user-friendly software interface for users was designed to operate input parameters and observe the output results intuitively. A variety of simulations was done, such as different types of water and different scattering phase functions. The simulation results were highly consistent with the theoretical lidar equations. The system was important to the research on the detection mechanism of spaceborne oceanic lidars.
