Low-frequency anelastic spectroscopy is used for examining the liquid-liquid transition ([T.sub.ll]) of polystyrene (PS) melts with different molecular weights in order to detect the effect of molecular weights on the dynamics of PS melt near and above [T.sub.ll]. The studies have shown that with increasing molecular weights, the PS melt has displayed a higher energy barrier, a smaller concentration of mobile species and a stronger coupling between mobile species at [T.sub.ll].

We report the first measurement of the opening angle distribution between pairs of jets produced in high-energy collisions of transversely polarized protons. The measurement probes (Sivers) correlations between the transverse spin orientation of a proton and the transverse momentum directions of its partons. With both beams polarized, the wide pseudorapidity (-1 leq eta leq +2) coverage for jets permits separation of Sivers functions for the valence and sea regions. The resulting asymmetries are all consistent with zero and considerably smaller than Sivers effects observed in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). We discuss theoretical attempts to reconcile the new results with the sizable transverse spin effects seen in SIDIS and forward hadron production in pp collisions.

22 pages, 20 figures, 11 tables, submitted to Phys. Rev. C; We present strange particle spectra and yields measured at mid-rapidity in $\sqrt{\text{s}}=200$ GeV proton-proton ($p+p$) collisions at RHIC. We find that the previously observed universal transverse mass ($\mathrm{m_{T}}\equiv\sqrt{\mathrm{p_{T}}^{2}+\mathrm{m}^{2}}$) scaling of hadron production in $p+p$ collisions seems to break down at higher \mt and that there is a difference in the shape of the \mt spectrum between baryons and mesons. We observe mid-rapidity anti-baryon to baryon ratios near unity for $\Lambda$ and $\Xi$ baryons and no dependence of the ratio on transverse momentum, indicating that our data do not yet reach the quark-jet dominated region. We show the dependence of the mean transverse momentum (\mpt) on measured charged particle multiplicity and on particle mass and infer that these trends are consistent with gluon-jet dominated particle production. The data are compared to previous measurements from CERN-SPS, ISR and FNAL experiments and to Leading Order (LO) and Next to Leading order (NLO) string fragmentation model predictions. We infer from these comparisons that the spectral shapes and particle yields from $p+p$ collisions at RHIC energies have large contributions from gluon jets rather than quark jets.

We present the first statistically meaningful results from two-K0s interferometry in heavy-ion collisions. A model that takes the effect of the strong interaction into account has been used to fit the measured correlation function. The effects of single and coupled channel were explored. At the mean transverse mass m_T = 1.07 GeV, we obtain the values R = 4.09 +/- 0.46 (stat.) +/- 0.31 (sys) fm and lambda = 0.92 +/- 0.23 (stat) +/- 0.13 (sys), where R and lambda are the invariant radius and chaoticity parameters respectively. The results are qualitatively consistent with m_T systematics established with pions in a scenario characterized by a strong collective flow., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

We present STAR measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v_2 for pions, kaons, protons, Lambda, bar Lambda, Xi+bar Xi, and \Omega + bar Omega, along with v_4 for pions, kaons, protons, and Lambda + bar Lambda at mid-rapidity for Au+Au collisions at sqrt sNN=62.4 and 200 GeV. The v_2(p_T) values for all hadron species at 62.4 GeV are similar to those observed in 130 and 200 GeV collisions. For observed kinematic ranges, v_2 values at 62.4, 130, and 200 GeV are as little as 10 percent-15 percent larger than those in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt s NN =17.3 GeV. At intermediate transverse momentum (p_T from 1.5-5 GeV/c), the 62.4 GeV v_2(p_T) and v_4(p_T) values are consistent with the quark-number scaling first observed at 200 GeV. A four-particle cumulant analysis is used to assess the non-flow contributions to pions and protons and some indications are found for a smaller non-flow contribution to protons than pions. Baryon v_2 is larger than anti-baryon v_2 at 62.4 and 200 GeV perhaps indicating either that the initial spatial net-baryon distribution is anisotropic, that the mechanism leading to transport of baryon number from beam- to mid-rapidity enhances v_2, or that anti-baryon and baryon annihilation is larger in the in-plane direction.

We report a measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A_LL and the differential cross section for inclusive midrapidity jet production in polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. The cross section data cover transverse momenta 5 < pT < 50 GeV/c and agree with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD evaluations. The A_LL data cover 5 < pT < 17 GeV/c and disfavor at 98 percent C.L. maximal positive gluon polarization in the polarized nucleon.

The system created in non-central relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions possesses large orbital angular momentum. Due to spin-orbit coupling, particles produced in such a system could become globally polarized along the direction of the system angular momentum. We present the results of Lambda and anti-Lambda hyperon global polarization measurements in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=62.4 GeV and 200 GeV performed with the STAR detector at RHIC. The observed global polarization of Lambda and anti-Lambda hyperons in the STAR acceptance is consistent with zero within the precision of the measurements. The obtained upper limit, |P_{Lambda,anti-Lambda}, 11 pages, 10 figures, 1 table, minor changes, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. C

The STAR collaboration at RHIC reports measurements of the inclusive yield of non-photonic electrons, which arise dominantly from semi-leptonic decays of heavy flavor mesons, over a broad range of transverse momenta ($1.2 < \pt < 10$ \gevc) in \pp, \dAu, and \AuAu collisions at \sqrtsNN = 200 GeV. The non-photonic electron yield exhibits unexpectedly large suppression in central \AuAu collisions at high \pt, suggesting substantial heavy quark energy loss at RHIC. The centrality and \pt dependences of the suppression provide constraints on theoretical models of suppression., Published to Phys. Rev. Lett. - Abstract
Crystalline films of La0.65Pb0.35MnO3 grown on (100) LaAlO 3 substrates by rf sputtering have been investigated using magnetic circular dichroism and inverse photoemission spectroscopy. We find evidence for strong hybridization between unoccupied levels associated with Mn 3d and O 2p states. - Abstract
The composition in the surface region of the colossal magnetoresistance perovskite manganite materials, La0.65Pb0.35MnO3 has been studied using angle resolved x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The results are consistent with a Mn–O terminal layer and Pb segregation to the near-surface region. This is similar to the behavior exhibited by La0.65Pb0.35MnO3 and La0.65Pb0.35MnO3. The O–Mn–O terminal layer appears to be close to the Mn3+ valence state. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

In this investigation, effects of soft foamed polyethylene (FPE) and/or aluminum (AL) material on the properties of mini-cold room were investigated. Experiments showed that the thermal conductivity of FPE material with foaming rates of 15 and 45 were 0.0270 w/m · k and 0.0334 w/m · k, respectively. Thermal conductivity improved with increasing foaming rates. The thermal conductivity and heat flux of FPE materials with different outer layers were also measured. Aluminum material could provide best heat preservation properties for the FPE insulation material. The frost accumulation and the electricity consumption of mini store-room prepared with FPE + AL material were the lowest. The decay, bleaching rate and shattering rate of table grapes were 1.9%, 7.1%, and 4.2%, and the decay rate, weight loss and fruit firmness of the apples fruits were 0.5%, 0.47%, and 8.11 Kg/cm2, respectively, after storage at 0°C for 150 days in mini cold storage prepared with FPE + AL material. The fruits of Kyoho table grapes and “Fuji” apples in this mini-cold room exhibited better quality than those in the control cold storage room. The application of mini-cold room prepared with foamed PE material covered with aluminum material could not only provide excellent thermal insulation performance, but improve the quality of fruits. Phase structure, structure stability, electrical properties and catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction of the Ba-deficient layered-perovskite oxides LaBa1−x Co2O5+δ (LB1−x CO, x = 0.00–0.15) have been studied to determine their viability as cathode material of intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). LB1−x CO had tetragonal layered-perovskite structure when calcined at 850 °C–1050 °C in air but transformed into cubic structure at higher temperatures. The LB1−x CO oxide exhibited lower electrical conductivities and decreased area-specific resistances (ASRs) on the Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 (GDC) electrolyte with higher Ba-deficiency content. Among the samples, the LB0.90CO (x = 0.10) oxide exhibited the best electrochemical performance with ASR values of 0.118 Ω cm2 at 600 °C and 0.023 Ω cm2 at 700 °C respectively, ∼40% lower than the results of the parent oxide (x = 0), demonstrating its promising application as cathode materials of IT-SOFCs. PEROVSKITE , *NEUTRON diffraction - Abstract
The structure of La0.65Pb0.35MnO3 has been studied by neutron powder diffraction. From the temperature dependence of the lattice parameters, we observe that La0.65Pb0.35MnO3 remains single phase in the temperature interval from 25 to 400 K, with a rhombohedral (R3¯c) structure. The collinear Mn spins suffer a thermally driven reorientation transition close to the Curie temperature, as obtained from powder samples (using neutron diffraction) and from thin films [using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR)]. The reorientation transition may indicate the presence of local Jahn–Teller (JT) lattice distortions, which are prevented from developing with long-range order in the R3¯c crystal structure.
