Microplastics (MPs) in freshwater environments, such as lakes, have become a significant issue in recent years. However, studies on the lakes of the Yunnan Plateau have been limited. To understand the pollution status and sources of MPs in Lake Chenghai (LCH), 36 sampling sites were selected for the surface water and sediment samples. Morphological identification, compositional analysis, abundance measurement, and spatial distribution mapping of the MPs were carried out. We also performed correlation analyses with hydrological parameters and physicochemical indexes of water and sediments. We aimed to uncover the spatial distribution patterns of the MPs in LCH, along with potential sources. Our findings revealed that all samples contained MPs and all of them were fibers. The abundance of MPs ranged from 90 to 770 n/m3 (329.44 rms) in the water and from 10 to 115 n/kg (43.19 rms) in the sediments, with particle sizes of 1-3 mm and less than 1 mm, respectively. Transparent MPs were prevalent, comprising 68% of the MPs found in the water and 63% in the sediments. The primary components of the MPs were polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and man-made fibers (rayon). The spatial distribution showed an increasing concentration of MPs from south to north in the surface water, whereas the opposite trend was found in the sediments. Human activities, prevailing winds, and the river flowing into the lake influenced the spatial distribution pattern of the MPs. The abundance and assemblage characteristics of the MPs were directly correlated with the factors of nitrogen, phosphorus, and particle size in the water and sediments, but the correlation was not significant. The main source of MPs was the production and livelihoods of the neighboring residents, especially the use of fishing gears and nets. Since LCH shows significant pollution from MPs, there is an urgent need to control and manage the watershed in order to reduce the input of MPs in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studying brain‐wide hemodynamic responses to different stimuli at high spatiotemporal resolutions can help gain new insights into the mechanisms of neuro‐ diseases and ‐disorders. Nonetheless, this task is challenging, primarily due to the complexity of neurovascular coupling, which encompasses interdependent hemodynamic parameters including cerebral blood volume (CBV), cerebral blood flow (CBF), and cerebral oxygen saturation (SO2). The current brain imaging technologies exhibit inherent limitations in resolution, sensitivity, and imaging depth, restricting their capacity to comprehensively capture the intricacies of cerebral functions. To address this, a multimodal functional ultrasound and photoacoustic (fUSPA) imaging platform is reported, which integrates ultrafast ultrasound and multispectral photoacoustic imaging methods in a compact head‐mountable device, to quantitatively map individual dynamics of CBV, CBF, and SO2 as well as contrast agent enhanced brain imaging at high spatiotemporal resolutions. Following systematic characterization, the fUSPA system is applied to study brain‐wide cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) at single‐vessel resolution via relative changes in CBV, CBF, and SO2 in response to hypercapnia stimulation. These results show that cortical veins and arteries exhibit differences in CVR in the stimulated state and consistent anti‐correlation in CBV oscillations during the resting state, demonstrating the multiparametric fUSPA system's unique capabilities in investigating complex mechanisms of brain functions. Atrial fibrillation (AF) progression is generally accompanied by increased atrial fibrosis and atrial structural remodeling. Lysyl oxidase-like 2 (LOXL2) is known to play an important role in many fibrotic conditions, including cardiac fibrosis. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between serum LOXL2 levels and AF. Fifty-four AF patients and 32 control subjects were enrolled in the study. High-density three-dimensional electroanatomic mapping was performed, and mean bipolar voltage was assessed in AF patients. LOXL2 levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All patients underwent echocardiography to assess left atrium size and left ventricle function. Serum LOXL2 levels were significantly elevated in AF patients compared with the control group (526.81 ± 316.82 vs 240.94 ± 92.51 pg/ml, P<0.01). In addition, serum LOXL2 level was significantly correlated with the size of the left atrium (LAD) (r2 = 0.38, P<0.01). Furthermore, the serum LOXL2 levels were significantly higher in AF patients with LAD ≥ 40 mm compared with those with LAD < 40 mm (664.34 ± 346.50 vs 354.90 ± 156.23 pg/ml, P<0.01). And the Spearman’s correlation analysis further revealed that the mean bipolar left atrial voltage was inversely correlated with the LOXL2 (r2 =−0.49, P<0.01) in AF patients. Multivariate regression analysis further demonstrated that serum LOXL2 [odds ratio (OR) 1.013, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.002–1.024, P<0.05] and LAD (OR 1.704, 95% CI 1.131–2.568, P<0.01) were independent predictors of AF. In conclusion, serum LOXL2 levels were significantly elevated and were correlated with the degree of left atrial fibrosis in AF patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microbial dysbiosis, characterized by an imbalanced microbial community structure and function, has been linked to hypertension. While prior research has primarily focused on differential abundances, our study highlights the role of non-differential microbes in hypertension. We propose that non-differential microbes contribute to hypertension through their ecological interactions, as defined by co-abundances (pairs of microbes exhibiting correlated abundance patterns). Using gut microbiome data from the Guangdong Gut Microbiome Project, which includes 2355 hypertensive and 4644 non-hypertensive participants across 14 regions, we identified replicable hypertension-related microbial interactions. Notably, most co-abundances involved non-differential microbes, which were found to correlate with both hypertension severity and hypertension-related microbial metabolic pathways.
