Traffic flow estimation (TFE) is crucial for urban intelligent traffic systems. While traditional on-road detectors are hindered by limited coverage and high costs, cloud computing and data mining of vehicular network data, such as driving speeds and GPS coordinates, present a promising and cost-effective alternative. Furthermore, minimizing data collection can significantly reduce overhead. However, limited data can lead to inaccuracies and instability in TFE. To address this, we introduce the spatial-temporal Mamba (ST-Mamba), a deep learning model combining a convolutional neural network (CNN) with a Mamba framework. ST-Mamba is designed to enhance TFE accuracy and stability by effectively capturing the spatial-temporal patterns within traffic flow. Our model aims to achieve results comparable to those from extensive data sets while only utilizing minimal data. The growing number of connected vehicles offers an opportunity to leverage internet of vehicles (IoV) data for traffic state estimation (TSE) which plays a crucial role in intelligent transportation systems (ITS). By utilizing only a portion of IoV data instead of the entire dataset, the significant overheads associated with collecting and processing large amounts of data can be avoided. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework that utilizes sparse IoV data to achieve cost-effective TSE. Particularly, we propose a novel spatial-temporal attention model called the convolutional retentive network (CRNet) to improve the TSE accuracy by mining spatial-temporal traffic state correlations. The model employs the convolutional neural network (CNN) for spatial correlation aggregation and the retentive network (RetNet) based on the attention mechanism to extract temporal correlations. This paper focuses on Federated Domain-Incremental Learning (FDIL) where each client continues to learn incremental tasks where their domain shifts from each other. We propose a novel adaptive knowledge matching-based personalized FDIL approach (pFedDIL) which allows each client to alternatively utilize appropriate incremental task learning strategy on the correlation with the knowledge from previous tasks. More specifically, when a new task arrives, each client first calculates its local correlations with previous tasks. Then, the client can choose to adopt a new initial model or a previous model with similar knowledge to train the new task and simultaneously migrate knowledge from previous tasks based on these correlations. Furthermore, to identify the correlations between the new task and previous tasks for each client, we separately employ an auxiliary classifier to each target classification model and propose sharing partial parameters between the target classification model and the auxiliary classifier to condense model parameters. We conduct extensive experiments on several datasets of which results demonstrate that pFedDIL outperforms state-of-the-art methods by up to 14.35\% in terms of average accuracy of all tasks.

Radio Frequency (RF) fingerprinting is to identify a wireless device from its uniqueness of the analog circuitry or hardware imperfections. However, unlike the MAC address which can be modified, such hardware feature is inevitable for the signal emitted to air, which can possibly reveal device whereabouts, e.g., a sniffer can use a pre-trained model to identify a nearby device when receiving its signal. Such fingerprint may expose critical private information, e.g., the associated upper-layer applications or the end-user. In this paper, we propose to erase such RF feature for wireless devices, which can prevent fingerprinting by actively perturbation from the signal perspective. Specifically, we consider a common RF fingerprinting scenario, where machine learning models are trained from pilot signal data for identification. A novel adversarial attack solution is designed to generate proper perturbations, whereby the perturbed pilot signal can hide the hardware feature and misclassify the model. We theoretically show that the perturbation would not affect the communication function within a tolerable perturbation threshold. We also implement the pilot signal fingerprinting and the proposed perturbation process in a practical LTE system. Extensive experiment results demonstrate that the RF fingerprints can be effectively erased to protect the user privacy.

Transformer model empowered architectures have become a pillar of cloud services that keeps reshaping our society. However, the dynamic query loads and heterogeneous user requirements severely challenge current transformer serving systems, which rely on pre-training multiple variants of a foundation model, i.e., with different sizes, to accommodate varying service demands. Unfortunately, such a mechanism is unsuitable for large transformer models due to the additional training costs and excessive I/O delay. In this paper, we introduce OTAS, the first elastic serving system specially tailored for transformer models by exploring lightweight token management. We develop a novel idea called token adaptation that adds prompting tokens to improve accuracy and removes redundant tokens to accelerate inference. To cope with fluctuating query loads and diverse user requests, we enhance OTAS with application-aware selective batching and online token adaptation. OTAS first batches incoming queries with similar service-level objectives to improve the ingress throughput. Then, to strike a tradeoff between the overhead of token increment and the potentials for accuracy improvement, OTAS adaptively adjusts the token execution strategy by solving an optimization problem. Estimating causal effects among different events is of great importance to critical fields such as drug development. Nevertheless, the data features associated with events may be distributed across various silos and remain private within respective parties, impeding direct information exchange between them. This, in turn, can result in biased estimations of local causal effects, which rely on the characteristics of only a subset of the covariates. To tackle this challenge, we introduce an innovative disentangle architecture designed to facilitate the seamless cross-silo transmission of model parameters, enriched with causal mechanisms, through a combination of shared and private branches. Besides, we introduce global constraints into the equation to effectively mitigate bias within the various missing domains, thereby elevating the accuracy of our causal effect estimation. Selecting proper clients to participate in the iterative federated learning (FL) rounds is critical to effectively harness a broad range of distributed datasets. Existing client selection methods simply consider the variability among FL clients with uni-modal data, however, have yet to consider clients with multi-modalities. We reveal that traditional client selection scheme in MFL may suffer from a severe modality-level bias, which impedes the collaborative exploitation of multi-modal data, leading to insufficient local data exploration and global aggregation. To tackle this challenge, we propose a Client-wise Modality Selection scheme for MFL (CMSFed) that can comprehensively utilize information from each modality via avoiding such client selection bias caused by modality imbalance. Specifically, in each MFL round, the local data from different modalities are selectively employed to participate in local training and aggregation to mitigate potential modality imbalance of the global model. To approximate the fully aggregated model update in a balanced way, we introduce a novel local training loss function to enhance the weak modality and align the divergent feature spaces caused by inconsistent modality adoption strategies for different clients simultaneously. Then, a modality-level gradient decoupling method is designed to derive respective submodular functions to maintain the gradient diversity during the selection progress and balance MFL according to local modality imbalance in each iteration. Federated learning (FL) underpins advancements in privacy-preserving distributed computing by collaboratively training neural networks without exposing clients' raw data. Current FL paradigms primarily focus on uni-modal data, while exploiting the knowledge from distributed multimodal data remains largely unexplored. Existing multimodal FL (MFL) solutions are mainly designed for statistical or modality heterogeneity from the input side, however, have yet to solve the fundamental issue,"modality imbalance", in distributed conditions, which can lead to inadequate information exploitation and heterogeneous knowledge aggregation on different modalities.In this paper, we propose a novel Cross-Modal Infiltration Federated Learning (FedCMI) framework that effectively alleviates modality imbalance and knowledge heterogeneity via knowledge transfer from the global dominant modality. To avoid the loss of information in the weak modality due to merely imitating the behavior of dominant modality, we design the two-projector module to integrate the knowledge from dominant modality while still promoting the local feature exploitation of weak modality. In addition, we introduce a class-wise temperature adaptation scheme to achieve fair performance across different classes. The edge intelligence (EI) has been widely applied recently. Spliting the model between device, edge server, and cloud can improve the performance of EI greatly. The model segmentation without user mobility has been investigated deeply by previous works. However, in most use cases of EI, the end devices are mobile. Only a few works have been carried out on this aspect. These works still have many issues, such as ignoring the energy consumption of mobile device, inappropriate network assumption, and low effectiveness on adaptiving user mobility, etc. Therefore, for addressing the disadvantages of model segmentation and resource allocation in previous works, we propose mobility and cost aware model segmentation and resource allocation algorithm for accelerating the inference at edge (MCSA). Specfically, in the scenario without user mobility, the loop interation gradient descent (Li-GD) algorithm is provided. When the mobile user has a large model inference task needs to be calculated, it will take the energy consumption of mobile user, the communication and computing resource renting cost, and the inference delay into account to find the optimal model segmentation and resource allocation strategy. In the scenario with user mobility, the mobiity aware Li-GD (MLi-GD) algorithm is proposed to calculate the optimal strategy. Then, the properties of the proposed algorithms are investigated, including convergence, complexity, and approximation ratio. Attempts to create quantum degenerate gases without evaporative cooling have been pursued since the early days of laser cooling, with the consensus that polarization gradient cooling (PGC, also known as "optical molasses") alone cannot reach condensation. In the present work, we report that simple PGC can generate a small Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) inside a corrugated micrometer-sized optical dipole trap. The experimental parameters enabling BEC creation were found by machine learning, which increased the atom number by a factor of 5 and decreased the temperature by a factor of 2.5, corresponding to almost two orders of magnitude gain in phase space density. When the trapping light is slightly misaligned through a microscopic objective lens, a BEC of $\sim 250$ $^{87}$Rb atoms is formed inside a local dimple within 40 ms of PGC., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Performing parallel gate operations while retaining low crosstalk is an essential step in transforming neutral atom arrays into powerful quantum computers and simulators. Tightly focusing control beams in small areas for crosstalk suppression is typically challenging and can lead to imperfect polarization for certain transitions. We tackle such a problem by introducing a method to engineer single qubit gates through phase-modulated continuous driving. Distinct qubits can be individually addressed to high accuracy by simply tuning the modulation parameters, which significantly suppresses crosstalk effects. When arranged in a lattice structure, individual control with optimal crosstalk suppression is achieved. With the assistance of additional addressing light or multiple modulation frequencies, we develop two efficient implementations of parallel-gate operations. Our results pave the way to scaling up atom-array platforms with low-error parallel-gate operations, without requiring complicated wavefront design or high-power laser beams.

To reduce the dimensionality of the functional covariate, functional principal component analysis plays a key role, however, there is uncertainty on the number of principal components. Model averaging addresses this uncertainty by taking a weighted average of the prediction obtained from a set of candidate models. In this paper, we develop an optimal model averaging approach that selects the weights by minimizing a $K$-fold cross-validation criterion. We prove the asymptotic optimality of the selected weights in terms of minimizing the excess final prediction error, which greatly improves the usual asymptotic optimality in terms of minimizing the final prediction error in the literature. When the true regression relationship belongs to the set of candidate models, we provide the consistency of the averaged estimators. This article reports on measurements of the electrostatic charge of particles in a turbulent duct flow. In contrast to previous charge measurements, which do not apply to turbulent flows or give only the sum of all particles' charges, the new method resolves the charge of a turbulent powder flow spatially. The experiment consists of a Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) system and electrode plates that generate an electric field. By comparing particle velocities and accelerations with and without the electric field, the time-averaged local particle charge profile is derived. Spatially resolving the charge profiles unveiled bipolar particle flow. The average of the charge profiles agreed well with a conventional Faraday pail measurement, demonstrating the accuracy of our measurements. However, the peak value of the charge profiles was 76 times higher than the average of the particles' charge.

Malware open-set recognition (MOSR) aims at jointly classifying malware samples from known families and detect the ones from novel unknown families, respectively. Existing works mostly rely on a well-trained classifier considering the predicted probabilities of each known family with a threshold-based detection to achieve the MOSR. However, our observation reveals that the feature distributions of malware samples are extremely similar to each other even between known and unknown families. Thus the obtained classifier may produce overly high probabilities of testing unknown samples toward known families and degrade the model performance. In this paper, we propose the Multi-modal Dual-Embedding Networks, dubbed MDENet, to take advantage of comprehensive malware features (i.e., malware images and malware sentences) from different modalities to enhance the diversity of malware feature space, which is more representative and discriminative for down-stream recognition. Last, to further guarantee the open-set recognition, we dually embed the fused multi-modal representation into one primary space and an associated sub-space, i.e., discriminative and exclusive spaces, with contrastive sampling and rho-bounded enclosing sphere regularizations, which resort to classification and detection, respectively. Moreover, we also enrich our previously proposed large-scaled malware dataset MAL-100 with multi-modal characteristics and contribute an improved version dubbed MAL-100+. Federated Semi-supervised Learning (FedSSL) has emerged as a new paradigm for allowing distributed clients to collaboratively train a machine learning model over scarce labeled data and abundant unlabeled data. However, existing works for FedSSL rely on a closed-world assumption that all local training data and global testing data are from seen classes observed in the labeled dataset. It is crucial to go one step further: adapting FL models to an open-world setting, where unseen classes exist in the unlabeled data. In this paper, we propose a novel Federatedopen-world Semi-Supervised Learning (FedoSSL) framework, which can solve the key challenge in distributed and open-world settings, i.e., the biased training process for heterogeneously distributed unseen classes. Specifically, since the advent of a certain unseen class depends on a client basis, the locally unseen classes (exist in multiple clients) are likely to receive differentiated superior aggregation effects than the globally unseen classes (exist only in one client). We adopt an uncertainty-aware suppressed loss to alleviate the biased training between locally unseen and globally unseen classes. Besides, we enable a calibration module supplementary to the global aggregation to avoid potential conflicting knowledge transfer caused by inconsistent data distribution among different clients. This paper investigates a new, practical, but challenging problem named Non-exemplar Online Class-incremental continual Learning (NO-CL), which aims to preserve the discernibility of base classes without buffering data examples and efficiently learn novel classes continuously in a single-pass (i.e., online) data stream. The challenges of this task are mainly two-fold: (1) Both base and novel classes suffer from severe catastrophic forgetting as no previous samples are available for replay. (2) As the online data can only be observed once, there is no way to fully re-train the whole model, e.g., re-calibrate the decision boundaries via prototype alignment or feature distillation. In this paper, we propose a novel Dual-prototype Self-augment and Refinement method (DSR) for NO-CL problem, which consists of two strategies: 1) Dual class prototypes: vanilla and high-dimensional prototypes are exploited to utilize the pre-trained information and obtain robust quasi-orthogonal representations rather than example buffers for both privacy preservation and memory reduction. 2) Self-augment and refinement: Instead of updating the whole network, we optimize high-dimensional prototypes alternatively with the extra projection module based on self-augment vanilla prototypes, through a bi-level optimization problem. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed DSR in NO-CL.

Online Class-Incremental (OCI) learning has sparked new approaches to expand the previously trained model knowledge from sequentially arriving data streams with new classes. Unfortunately, OCI learning can suffer from catastrophic forgetting (CF) as the decision boundaries for old classes can become inaccurate when perturbated by new ones. Existing literature have applied the data augmentation (DA) to alleviate the model forgetting, while the role of DA in OCI has not been well understood so far. In this paper, we theoretically show that augmented samples with lower correlation to the original data are more effective in preventing forgetting. However, aggressive augmentation may also reduce the consistency between data and corresponding labels, which motivates us to exploit proper DA to boost the OCI performance and prevent the CF problem. We propose the Enhanced Mixup (EnMix) method that mixes the augmented samples and their labels simultaneously, which is shown to enhance the sample diversity while maintaining strong consistency with corresponding labels. Further, to solve the class imbalance problem, we design an Adaptive Mixup (AdpMix) method to calibrate the decision boundaries by mixing samples from both old and new classes and dynamically adjusting the label mixing ratio. Autonomous driving has now made great strides thanks to artificial intelligence, and numerous advanced methods have been proposed for vehicle end target detection, including single sensor or multi sensor detection methods. However, the complexity and diversity of real traffic situations necessitate an examination of how to use these methods in real road conditions. In this paper, we propose RMMDet, a road-side multitype and multigroup sensor detection system for autonomous driving. We use a ROS-based virtual environment to simulate real-world conditions, in particular the physical and functional construction of the sensors. Then we implement muti-type sensor detection and multi-group sensors fusion in this environment, including camera-radar and camera-lidar detection based on result-level fusion. We produce local datasets and real sand table field, and conduct various experiments. Furthermore, we link a multi-agent collaborative scheduling system to the fusion detection system. Hence, the whole roadside detection system is formed by roadside perception, fusion detection, and scheduling planning. Through the experiments, it can be seen that RMMDet system we built plays an important role in vehicle-road collaboration and its optimization. Blockchain has been deemed as a promising solution for providing security and privacy protection in the next-generation wireless networks. Large-scale concurrent access for massive wireless devices to accomplish the consensus procedure may consume prohibitive communication and computing resources, and thus may limit the application of blockchain in wireless conditions. As most existing consensus protocols are designed for wired networks, directly apply them for wireless users may exhaust their scarce spectrum and computing resources. In this paper, we propose AirCon, a byzantine fault-tolerant (BFT) consensus protocol for wireless users via the over-the-air computation. The novelty of AirCon is to take advantage of the intrinsic characteristic of the wireless channel and automatically achieve the consensus in the physical layer while receiving from the end users, which greatly reduces the communication and computational cost that would be caused by traditional consensus protocols. We implement the AirCon protocol integrated into an LTE system and provide solutions to the critical issues for over-the-air consensus implementation. Open-World Compositional Zero-shot Learning (OW-CZSL) aims to recognize novel compositions of state and object primitives in images with no priors on the compositional space, which induces a tremendously large output space containing all possible state-object compositions. Existing works either learn the joint compositional state-object embedding or predict simple primitives with separate classifiers. However, the former heavily relies on external word embedding methods, and the latter ignores the interactions of interdependent primitives, respectively. In this paper, we revisit the primitive prediction approach and propose a novel method, termed Progressive Cross-primitive Compatibility (ProCC), to mimic the human learning process for OW-CZSL tasks. Specifically, the cross-primitive compatibility module explicitly learns to model the interactions of state and object features with the trainable memory units, which efficiently acquires cross-primitive visual attention to reason high-feasibility compositions, without the aid of external knowledge. Moreover, considering the partial-supervision setting (pCZSL) as well as the imbalance issue of multiple task prediction, we design a progressive training paradigm to enable the primitive classifiers to interact to obtain discriminative information in an easy-to-hard manner. Extensive experiments on three widely used benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms other representative methods on both OW-CZSL and pCZSL settings by large margins.

Federated Learning (FL) is an emerging paradigm that enables distributed users to collaboratively and iteratively train machine learning models without sharing their private data. Motivated by the effectiveness and robustness of self-attention-based architectures, researchers are turning to using pre-trained Transformers (i.e., foundation models) instead of traditional convolutional neural networks in FL to leverage their excellent transfer learning capabilities. Despite recent progress, how pre-trained Transformer models play a role in FL remains obscure, that is, how to efficiently fine-tune these pre-trained models in FL and how FL users could benefit from this new paradigm. In this paper, we explore this issue and demonstrate that the fine-tuned Transformers achieve extraordinary performance on FL, and that the lightweight fine-tuning method facilitates a fast convergence rate and low communication costs. Concretely, we conduct a rigorous empirical study of three tuning methods (i.e., modifying the input, adding extra modules, and adjusting the backbone) using two types of pre-trained models (i.e., vision-language models and vision models) for FL. Our experiments show that 1) Fine-tuning the bias term of the backbone performs best when relying on a strong pre-trained model; 2) The vision-language model (e.g., CLIP) outperforms the pure vision model (e.g., ViT) and is more robust to the few-shot settings; 3) Compared to pure local training, FL with pre-trained models has a higher accuracy because it alleviates the problem of over-fitting. We will release our code and encourage further exploration of pre-trained Transformers and FL.

Multimodal learning (MML) aims to jointly exploit the common priors of different modalities to compensate for their inherent limitations. However, existing MML methods often optimize a uniform objective for different modalities, leading to the notorious "modality imbalance" problem and counterproductive MML performance. To address the problem, some existing methods modulate the learning pace based on the fused modality, which is dominated by the better modality and eventually results in a limited improvement on the worse modal. To better exploit the features of multimodal, we propose Prototypical Modality Rebalance (PMR) to perform stimulation on the particular slow-learning modality without interference from other modalities. Specifically, we introduce the prototypes that represent general features for each class, to build the non-parametric classifiers for uni-modal performance evaluation. Then, we try to accelerate the slow-learning modality by enhancing its clustering toward prototypes. Furthermore, to alleviate the suppression from the dominant modality, we introduce a prototype-based entropy regularization term during the early training stage to prevent premature convergence. Besides, our method only relies on the representations of each modality and without restrictions from model structures and fusion methods, making it with great application potential for various scenarios., Comment: 10 pages,4 figures

Self-attention mechanisms, especially multi-head self-attention (MSA), have achieved great success in many fields such as computer vision and natural language processing. However, many existing vision transformer (ViT) works simply inherent transformer designs from NLP to adapt vision tasks, while ignoring the fundamental difference between ``how MSA works in image and language settings''. Language naturally contains highly semantic structures that are directly interpretable by humans. Its basic unit (word) is discrete without redundant information, which readily supports interpretable studies on MSA mechanisms of language transformer. In contrast, visual data exhibits a fundamentally different structure: Its basic unit (pixel) is a natural low-level representation with significant redundancies in the neighbourhood, which poses obvious challenges to the interpretability of MSA mechanism in ViT. In this paper, we introduce a typical image processing technique, i.e., scale-invariant feature transforms (SIFTs), which maps low-level representations into mid-level spaces, and annotates extensive discrete keypoints with semantically rich information. Next, we construct a weighted patch interrelation analysis based on SIFT keypoints to capture the attention patterns hidden in patches with different semantic concentrations Interestingly, we find this quantitative analysis is not only an effective complement to the interpretability of MSA mechanisms in ViT, but can also be applied to 1) spurious correlation discovery and ``prompting'' during model inference, 2) and guided model pre-training acceleration. Multiple-input multiple-output and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) are the key technologies in 4G and subsequent wireless communication systems. Conventionally, the MIMO-OFDM receiver is performed by multiple cascaded blocks with different functions and the algorithm in each block is designed based on ideal assumptions of wireless channel distributions. However, these assumptions may fail in practical complex wireless environments. The deep learning (DL) method has the ability to capture key features from complex and huge data. In this paper, a novel end-to-end MIMO-OFDM receiver framework based on \textit{transformer}, named SigT, is proposed. By regarding the signal received from each antenna as a token of the transformer, the spatial correlation of different antennas can be learned and the critical zero-shot problem can be mitigated. Furthermore, the proposed SigT framework can work well without the inserted pilots, which improves the useful data transmission efficiency. Experiment results show that SigT achieves much higher performance in terms of signal recovery accuracy than benchmark methods, even in a low SNR environment or with a small number of training samples. Quick global aggregation of effective distributed parameters is crucial to federated learning (FL), which requires adequate bandwidth for parameters communication and sufficient user data for local training. Otherwise, FL may cost excessive training time for convergence and produce inaccurate models. In this paper, we propose a brand-new FL framework, PromptFL, that replaces the federated model training with the federated prompt training, i.e., let federated participants train prompts instead of a shared model, to simultaneously achieve the efficient global aggregation and local training on insufficient data by exploiting the power of foundation models (FM) in a distributed way. PromptFL ships an off-the-shelf FM, i.e., CLIP, to distributed clients who would cooperatively train shared soft prompts based on very few local data. Since PromptFL only needs to update the prompts instead of the whole model, both the local training and the global aggregation can be significantly accelerated. And FM trained over large scale data can provide strong adaptation capability to distributed users tasks with the trained soft prompts. We empirically analyze the PromptFL via extensive experiments, and show its superiority in terms of system feasibility, user privacy, and performance.

Electrostatic charge on powders arises during pneumatic transport due to particle-particle and particle-surface interactions via triboelectrification. This is a potential threat to the safety of industrial productions and the source of numerous fires and dust explosions in the past. Triboelectric charges are affected by environmental conditions, such as ambient temperature and relative humidity. In this work, we experimentally investigated the influence of ambient humidity on the particle charge of gas-solid flows in a square-shaped duct. Monodisperse PMMA particles are fed into a fully developed airflow in a PMMA duct and then pass through a metallic duct section. The charge of particles is measured at the outlet of the metallic duct via a Faraday cup. By measuring the electrostatic charge under various environmental conditions, we observed that the electrostatic charge first increases with the humidity and then decreases when the humidity becomes higher., Comment: ISHPMIE 2022

Personalized Federated Learning (pFL) not only can capture the common priors from broad range of distributed data, but also support customized models for heterogeneous clients. Researches over the past few years have applied the weighted aggregation manner to produce personalized models, where the weights are determined by calibrating the distance of the entire model parameters or loss values, and have yet to consider the layer-level impacts to the aggregation process, leading to lagged model convergence and inadequate personalization over non-IID datasets. In this paper, we propose a novel pFL training framework dubbed Layer-wised Personalized Federated learning (pFedLA) that can discern the importance of each layer from different clients, and thus is able to optimize the personalized model aggregation for clients with heterogeneous data. Specifically, we employ a dedicated hypernetwork per client on the server side, which is trained to identify the mutual contribution factors at layer granularity. Meanwhile, a parameterized mechanism is introduced to update the layer-wised aggregation weights to progressively exploit the inter-user similarity and realize accurate model personalization. Extensive experiments are conducted over different models and learning tasks, and we show that the proposed methods achieve significantly higher performance than state-of-the-art pFL methods.

Recently, the enactment of privacy regulations has promoted the rise of the machine unlearning paradigm. Existing studies of machine unlearning mainly focus on sample-wise unlearning, such that a learnt model will not expose user's privacy at the sample level. Yet we argue that such ability of selective removal should also be presented at the attribute level, especially for the attributes irrelevant to the main task, e.g., whether a person recognized in a face recognition system wears glasses or the age range of that person. Through a comprehensive literature review, it is found that existing studies on attribute-related problems like fairness and de-biasing learning cannot address the above concerns properly. To bridge this gap, we propose a paradigm of selectively removing input attributes from feature representations which we name `attribute unlearning'. In this paradigm, certain attributes will be accurately captured and detached from the learned feature representations at the stage of training, according to their mutual information. The particular attributes will be progressively eliminated along with the training procedure towards convergence, while the rest of attributes related to the main task are preserved for achieving competitive model performance. Considering the computational complexity during the training process, we not only give a theoretically approximate training method, but also propose an acceleration scheme to speed up the training process. We validate our method by spanning several datasets and models and demonstrate that our design can preserve model fidelity and reach prevailing unlearning efficacy with high efficiency. The proposed unlearning paradigm builds a foundation for future machine unlearning system and will become an essential component of the latest privacy-related legislation.

Model selection (MS) and model averaging (MA) are two popular approaches when having many candidate models. Theoretically, the estimation risk of an oracle MA is not larger than that of an oracle MS because the former one is more flexible, but a foundational issue is: does MA offer a {\it substantial} improvement over MS? Recently, a seminal work: Peng and Yang (2021), has answered this question under nested models with linear orthonormal series expansion. In the current paper, we further reply this question under linear nested regression models. Especially, a more general nested framework, heteroscedastic and autocorrelated random errors, and sparse coefficients are allowed in the current paper, which is more common in practice. Thus far, simulations have failed to predict accurately electrostatic powder charging during pneumatic transport. We advanced the modeling of powder flow charging by a three-part study: first, we shot individual particles on a metal target and measured the exchanged charge. Second, based on these results, we formulated an empirical model and implemented it in our CFD tool. Using this tool, we performed large-eddy simulations of the powder flow through a square duct with a cylindrical obstacle inside. Finally, we compared the simulations to measurements in our pneumatic conveying test rig. The simulations successfully predicted the charging of powder consisting of monodisperse particles of a size of 200 $\mu$m. Contrary to the usual procedure for this type of simulation, the tool requires no tuning of any parameters. According to our simulations, the powder mostly charged when hitting the cylindrical obstacle. The contacts led to bipolar charge distributions.

We demonstrate a new approach for fast preparation, manipulation, and collective readout of an atomic Rydberg-state qubit. By making use of Rydberg blockade inside a small atomic ensemble, we prepare a single qubit within 3~$\mu$s with a success probability of $F_p=0.93 \pm 0.02$, rotate it, and read out its state in $6$ $\mu s$ with a single-shot fidelity of $F_d=0.92 \pm 0.04$. The ensemble-assisted detection is $10^3$ times faster than imaging of a single atom with the same optical resolution, and enables fast repeated non-destructive measurement. We observe qubit coherence times of 15~$\mu$s, much longer than the $\pi$ rotation time of 90~ns. Potential applications ranging from faster quantum information processing in atom arrays to efficient implementation of quantum error correction are discussed.
