Search

Puns play a vital role in academic research due to their distinct structure and clear definition, which aid in the comprehensive analysis of linguistic humor. However, the understanding of puns in large language models (LLMs) has not been thoroughly examined, limiting their use in creative writing and humor creation. In this paper, we leverage three popular tasks, i.e., pun recognition, explanation and generation to systematically evaluate the capabilities of LLMs in pun understanding. In addition to adopting the automated evaluation metrics from prior research, we introduce new evaluation methods and metrics that are better suited to the in-context learning paradigm of LLMs. These new metrics offer a more rigorous assessment of an LLM's ability to understand puns and align more closely with human cognition than previous metrics. Our findings reveal the "lazy pun generation" pattern and identify the primary challenges LLMs encounter in understanding puns.

Aims. The X-ray luminous and radio-loud AGN SRGE J170245.3+130104 discovered at z $\sim$ 5.5 provides unique chances to probe the SMBH growth and evolution with powerful jets in the early Universe. Methods. We present 1.35 - 5.1 GHz Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) results on the radio continuum emission and spectrum analysis for this quasar in a low flux density state. Results. This source is unresolved at three frequencies with the total flux densities of 8.35$\pm$0.09 mJy beam-1, 7.47$\pm$0.08 mJy beam-1, and 6.57$\pm$0.02 mJy beam-1 at 1.73 GHz, 2.26 GHz, and 4.87 GHz, respectively. Meanwhile, the brightness temperature is higher than 109 K. Conclusions. Compared with previous radio observations with arcsec-scale resolution, nearly all the radio emission from this source concentrates in the very central milli-arcsecond (mas) scale area. We confirm this source is a bright blazar at z > 5. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project consists of delivering two largest radio telescope arrays being built by the SKA Observatory (SKAO), which is an intergovernmental organization bringing together nations from around the world with China being one of the major member countries. The computing resources needed to process, distribute, curate and use the vast amount of data that will be generated by the SKA telescopes are too large for the SKAO to manage on its own. To address this challenge, the SKAO is working with the international community to create a shared, distributed data, computing and networking capability called the SKA Regional Centre Alliance. In this model, the SKAO will be supported by a global network of SKA Regional Centres (SRCs) distributed around the world in its member countries to build an end-to-end science data system that will provide astronomers with high-quality science products. SRCs undertake deep processing, scientific analysis, and long-term storage of the SKA data, as well as user support. China has been actively participating in and promoting the construction of SRCs. This paper introduces the international cooperation and ongoing prototyping of the global SRC network, the construction plan of the China SRC and describes in detail the China SRC prototype. The paper also presents examples of scientific applications of SKA precursor and pathfinder telescopes completed using resources from the China SRC prototype. Recently, Co-based honeycomb magnets have been proposed as promising candidate materials to host the Kitaev spin liquid state. One of the front-runners is BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ (BCAO), where it was suggested that the exchange processes between Co$^{2+}$ ions via the surrounding edge-sharing oxygen octahedra could give rise to bond-dependent Kitaev interactions. In this work, we present and analyze comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering studies of BCAO with fields in the honeycomb plane. Combining the constraints from the magnon excitations in the high-field polarized state and the inelastic spin structure factor measured in zero magnetic field, we examine two leading theoretical models: the Kitaev-type \JKG model and the \XXZ model. We show that the existing experimental data can be consistently accounted for by the \XXZ model but not by the \JKG model, and we discuss the implications of these results for the realization of a spin liquid phase in BCAO and more generally for the realization of the Kitaev model in cobaltates., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

Quasi-one-dimensional iron chalcogenides possess various magnetic states depending on the lattice distortion, electronic correlations, and presence of defects. We present neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the spin ladder compound BaFe$_{2-\delta}$S$_{1.5}$Se$_{1.5}$ with $\sim$6% iron vacancies. The data reveal that long-range magnetic order is absent, while the characteristic magnetic excitations that correspond to both the stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic correlations are observed. First-principles calculations support the existence of both stripe and block-type antiferromagnetic short-range order in the experimental sample. The disappearance of long-range magnetic order may be due to the competition between these two magnetic orders, which is greatly enhanced for a certain concentration of iron vacancies, which we calculate to be about 6%, consistent with the measured iron vacancy concentration. We present OmniUV, a multi-purpose simulation toolkit for space and ground VLBI observations. It supports various kinds of VLBI stations, including Earth (ground) fixed, Earth orbit, Lunar fixed, Lunar orbit, Moon-Earth and Earth-Sun Lagrange 1 and 2 points, etc. The main functionalities of this toolkit are: (1) Trajectory calculation; (2) Baseline uv calculation, by taking the vailability of each station into account; (3) Visibility simulation for the given uv distribution, source structure and system noise; (4) Image and beam reconstruction. Two scenarios, namely space VLBI network and wide field array, are presented as demonstrations of the toolkit applications in completely different scales. OmniUV is the acronym of "Omnipotent UV". We hope it could work as a general framework, in which various kinds of stations could be easily incorporated and the functionalities could be further extended. Electronic correlation is of fundamental importance to high temperature superconductivity. While the low energy electronic states in cuprates are dominantly affected by correlation effects across the phase diagram, observation of correlation-driven changes in fermiology amongst the iron-based superconductors remains rare. Here we present experimental evidence for a correlation-driven reconstruction of the Fermi surface tuned independently by two orthogonal axes of temperature and Se/Te ratio in the iron chalcogenide family FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$. We demonstrate that this reconstruction is driven by the de-hybridization of a strongly renormalized $d_{xy}$ orbital with the remaining itinerant iron 3$d$ orbitals in the emergence of an orbital-selective Mott phase. Our observations are further supported by our theoretical calculations to be salient spectroscopic signatures of such a non-thermal evolution from a strongly correlated metallic phase into an orbital-selective Mott phase in $d_{xy}$ as Se concentration is reduced., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, accepted version to appear in Communications Physics. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2010.13913

We present VOLKS2, the second release of "VLBI Observation for transient Localization Keen Searcher". The pipeline aims at transient search in regular VLBI observations as well as detection of single pulses from known sources in dedicated VLBI observations. The underlying method takes the idea of geodetic VLBI data processing, including fringe fitting to maximize the signal power and geodetic VLBI solving for localization. By filtering the candidate signals with multiple windows within a baseline and by cross matching with multiple baselines, RFIs are eliminated effectively. Unlike the station auto spectrum based method, RFI flagging is not required in the VOLKS2 pipeline. EVN observation (EL060) is carried out, so as to verify the pipeline's detection efficiency and localization accuracy in the whole FoV. The pipeline is parallelized with MPI and further accelerated with GPU, so as to exploit the hardware resources of modern GPU clusters. We can prove that, with proper optimization, VOLKS2 could achieve comparable performance as auto spectrum based pipelines. Large surveys using modern telescopes are producing images that are increasing exponentially in size and quality. Identifying objects in the generated images by visual recognition is time-consuming and labor-intensive, while classifying the extracted radio sources is even more challenging. To address these challenges, we develop a deep learning-based radio source detector, named \textsc{HeTu}, which is capable of rapidly identifying and classifying radio sources in an automated manner for both compact and extended radio sources. \textsc{HeTu} is based on a combination of a residual network (ResNet) and feature pyramid network (FPN). We classify radio sources into four classes based on their morphology. The training images are manually labeled and data augmentation methods are applied to solve the data imbalance between the different classes. \textsc{HeTu} automatically locates the radio sources in the images and assigns them to one of the four classes. The experiment on the testing dataset shows an average operation time of 5.4 millisecond per image and a precision of 99.4\% for compact point-like sources and 98.1\% for double-lobe sources. We applied \textsc{HeTu} to the images obtained from the GaLactic and the Galactic Extragalactic All-Object Murchison Wide-field Array (GLEAM) survey project. More than 96.9\% of the \textsc{HeTu}-detected compact sources are matched compared to the source finding software used in the GLEAM. We also detected and classified 2,298 extended sources (including Fanaroff-Riley type I and II sources, and core-jet sources) above $5\sigma$. The cross-matching rates of extended sources are higher than 97\%, showing excellent performance of \textsc{HeTu} in identifying extended radio sources. \textsc{HeTu} provides an efficient tool for radio source finding and classification and can be applied to other scientific fields., Comment: Accepted by Science Bulletin. Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) host a plethora of interesting physical phenomena ranging from charge order to superconductivity. By introducing magnetic ions into 2H-NbS$_2$, the material forms a family of magnetic intercalated TMDCs T$_x$NbS$_2$ (T = 3d transition metal). Recently, Fe$_{1/3+\delta}$NbS$_2$ has been found to possess intriguing resistance switching and magnetic memory effects coupled to the N\'{e}el temperature of T$_N \sim 45$ K [1,2]. We present comprehensive single crystal neutron diffraction measurements on under-intercalated ($\delta \sim -0.01$), stoichiometric, and over-intercalated ($\delta \sim 0.01$) samples. Magnetic defects are usually considered to suppress magnetic correlations and, concomitantly, transition temperatures. Instead, we observe highly tunable magnetic long-ranged states as the Fe concentration is varied from under-intercalated to over-intercalated, that is from Fe vacancies to Fe interstitials. The under- and over- intercalated samples reveal distinct antiferromagnetic stripe and zig-zag orders, associated with wave vectors $k_1$ = (0.5, 0, 0) and $k_2$ = (0.25, 0.5, 0), respectively. The stoichiometric sample shows two successive magnetic phase transitions for these two wave vectors with an unusual rise-and-fall feature in the intensities connected to $k_1$. We ascribe this sensitive tunability to the competing next nearest neighbor exchange interactions and the oscillatory nature of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) mechanism. We discuss experimental observations that relate to the observed intriguing switching resistance behaviors. Our discovery of a magnetic defect tuning of the magnetic structure in bulk crystals Fe$_{1/3+\delta}$NbS$_2$ provides a possible new avenue to implement controllable antiferromagnetic spintronic devices.

The idea of employing non-Abelian statistics for error-free quantum computing ignited interest in recent reports of topological surface superconductivity and Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$. An associated puzzle is that the topological features and superconducting properties are not observed uniformly across the sample surface. Understanding and practical control of these electronic inhomogeneities present a prominent challenge for potential applications. Here, we combine neutron scattering, scanning angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and microprobe composition and resistivity measurements to characterize the electronic state of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$. We establish a phase diagram in which the superconductivity is observed only at sufficiently low Fe concentration, in association with distinct antiferromagnetic correlations, while the coexisting topological surface state occurs only at sufficiently high Te concentration. We find that FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$ is located very close to both phase boundaries, which explains the inhomogeneity of superconducting and topological states. We present a neutron scattering study of phonons in single crystals of (Pb$_{0.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$)$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te with $x=0$ (metallic, but nonsuperconducting) and $x=0.2$ (nonmetallic normal state, but superconducting). We map the phonon dispersions (more completely for $x=0$) and find general consistency with theoretical calculations, except for the transverse and longitudinal optical (TO and LO) modes at the Brillouin zone center. At low temperature, both modes are strongly damped but sit at a finite energy ($\sim4$ meV in both samples), shifting to higher energy at room temperature. These modes are soft due to a proximate structural instability driven by the sensitivity of Pb-Te and Sn-Te $p$-orbital hybridization to off-center displacements of the metal atoms. The impact of the soft optical modes on the low-energy acoustic modes is inferred from the low thermal conductivity, especially at low temperature. Given that the strongest electron-phonon coupling is predicted for the LO mode, which should be similar for both studied compositions, it is intriguing that only the In-doped crystal is superconducting. In addition, we observe elastic diffuse (Huang) scattering that is qualitatively explained by the difference in Pb-Te and Sn-Te bond lengths within the lattice of randomly distributed Pb and Sn sites. We also confirm the presence of anomalous diffuse low-energy atomic vibrations that we speculatively attribute to local fluctuations of individual Pb atoms between off-center sites.

We report on the evolution of the average and depth-dependent magnetic order in thin film samples of biaxially stressed and electron-doped EuTiO$_3$ for samples across a doping range $<$0.1 to 7.8 $\times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$. Under an applied in-plane magnetic field, the G-type antiferromagnetic ground state undergoes a continuous spin-flop phase transition into in-plane, field-polarized ferromagnetism. The critical field for ferromagnetism slightly decreases with an increasing number of free carriers, yet the field evolution of the spin-flop transition is qualitatively similar across the doping range. Unexpectedly, we observe interfacial ferromagnetism with saturated Eu$^{2+}$ moments at the substrate interface at low fields preceding ferromagnetic saturation throughout the bulk of the degenerate semiconductor film. We report experimental studies of a series of BaFe$_2$S$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ ($0\leq x\leq3$) single crystals and powder specimens using x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation, and electrical transport measurements. A structural transformation from Cmcm (BaFe$_2$S$_3$) to Pnma (BaFe$_2$Se$_3$) was identified around $x = 0.7\sim 1$. Neutron diffraction measurements on the samples with $x$ = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.7 reveal that the N$\'{e}$el temperature of the stripe antiferromagnetic order is gradually suppressed from $\sim$120 to 85 K, while the magnitude of the ordered Fe$^{2+}$ moments shows very little variation. Similarly, the block antiferromagnetic order in BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ remains robust for $1.5\leq x\leq3$ with negligible variation in the ordered moment and a slight decrease of the N$\'{e}$el temperature from 250 K ($x=3$) to 225 K ($x=1.5$). The sample with $x=1$ near the Cmcm and Pnma border shows coexisting, two-dimensional, short-range stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic correlations. The system remains insulating for all $x$, but the thermal activation gap shows an abrupt increase when traversing the boundary from the Cmcm stripe phase to the Pnma block phase. The results demonstrate that the crystal structure, magnetic order, and electronic properties are strongly coupled in the BaFe$_2$S$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ system., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

We report a comprehensive study of the spin ladder compound BaFe$_2$S$_{2.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ using neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, high pressure synchrotron diffraction, and high pressure transport techniques. We find that BaFe$_2$S$_{2.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ possesses the same $Cmcm$ structure and stripe antiferromagnetic order as does BaFe$_2$S$_3$, but with a reduced N{\'{e}}el temperature of $T_N=98$ K compared to 120 K for the undoped system, and a slightly increased ordered moment of 1.40$\mu_B$ per iron. The low-energy spin excitations in BaFe$_2$S$_{2.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ are likewise similar to those observed in BaFe$_2$S$_{3}$. However, unlike the reports of superconductivity in BaFe$_2$S$_3$ below $T_c \sim 14$~K under pressures of 10~GPa or more, we observe no superconductivity in BaFe$_2$S$_{2.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ at any pressure up to 19.7~GPa. In contrast, the resistivity exhibits an upturn at low temperature under pressure. Furthermore, we show that additional high-quality samples of BaFe$_2$S$_3$ synthesized for this study likewise fail to become superconducting under pressure, instead displaying a similar upturn in resistivity at low temperature. These results demonstrate that microscopic, sample-specific details play an important role in determining the ultimate electronic ground state in this spin ladder system. We suggest that the upturn in resistivity at low temperature in both BaFe$_2$S$_3$ and BaFe$_2$S$_{2.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ may result from Anderson localization induced by S vacancies and random Se substitutions, enhanced by the quasi-one-dimensional ladder structure., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures
