Abstract Exploring chemical doping method to improve the electrical conductivity of polymers is still very attractive for researchers. In this work, we report a developed method of doping a polymer semiconductor aided by the coupled reaction that commonly exists in biological systems where a non-spontaneous reaction is driven by a spontaneous reaction. During the doping process, the chemical reaction between the dopant and the polymer is promoted by introducing a thermodynamically favorable reaction via adding additives that are highly reactive to the reduction product of the dopant to form a coupled reaction, thus significantly improving the electrical conductivity of polymers by 3–7 orders. This coupled reaction doping process shows the potential of wide applications in exploring efficient doping systems to prepare functional conducting polymers, which could be a powerful tool for modern organic electronics.

Abstract One-dimensional carbon nanotubes are promising candidates for thermoelectrics because of their excellent electrical and mechanical properties. However, the large n-type power factor remains elusive in macroscopic carbon nanotubes films. Herein, we report an outstanding n-type power factor of 6.75 mW m−1 K−2 for macroscopic carbon nanotubes films with high electrical and thermal conductivity. A high-power density curl-able thermoelectric generator is fabricated with the obtained carbon nanotubes films, which exhibits a high normalized power output density of 2.75 W m−1 at a temperature difference of 85 K. Abstract As a typical failure phenomenon in transformers, sulfur corrosion has garnered significant attention in the field of high‐voltage engineering. Grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) copper windings have been introduced to enhance sulfur corrosion resistance by slowing down intergranular corrosion. In this study, the sulfur corrosion behaviour and mechanisms of the GBCD copper windings under various temperatures were experimentally and theoretically studied. Results show that GBCD can enhance the corrosion resistance of copper in liquid environments. With the increase in temperatures, the insulating properties of oil and papers in traditional copper windings experience notable degradation, while GBCD copper windings show more stable insulating behaviours. In addition, modelling of grain boundary energy indicates that the grain boundary structure of GBCD copper windings has a lower average interface energy of 0.170 eV/Å2. Calculations of reaction thermodynamics show that GBCD copper windings possess a higher failure temperature (135.2°C) and inhibition degree (activation energy) of the sulfur corrosion (32,557.62 J/mol), revealing the stability and enhanced sulfur corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures.

The icing of wind turbine blades leads to a decrease in output power, seriously jeopardizing the economic benefits and operational reliability of wind farms. Conventional deicing techniques require expensive equipment and consume a large amount of energy. Low-interfacial toughness coatings without energy dissipation are believed to be a highly potential passive deicing technology. However, the durability in service is facing challenges. Herein, low-interfacial toughness PDMS coatings were prepared by physical blending. Through the optimization of added plasticizers and SiO2, PDMS coatings with excellent large-scale deicing performance were obtained. The constant deicing force and ice adhesion strength were reduced to 14.69 N/cm and 12.63 kPa, respectively. Moreover, a systematic durability assessment of the PDMS coating was carried out to address the actual operating conditions of wind turbines. Fortunately, the results showed that the PDMS coating could withstand 200 icing/deicing cycles while maintaining constant deicing force and ice adhesion strength of less than 50 N/cm and 30 kPa, respectively. After long-term thermal aging (21 days), UV irradiation (42 days) and salt spray corrosion (20 days), the PDMS coating still retained superior icephobicity and outstanding large-scale deicing performance. This work contributes to the research and development of low-interfacial toughness materials for large-scale deicing applications on wind turbine blades.

Extinction selectivity determines the direction of macroevolution, especially during mass extinction; however, its driving mechanisms remain poorly understood. By investigating the physiological selectivity of marine animals during the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, we found that marine clades with lower O2-carrying capacity hemerythrin proteins and those relying on O2 diffusion experienced significantly greater extinction intensity and body-size reduction than those with higher O2-carrying capacity hemoglobin or hemocyanin proteins. Our findings suggest that animals with high O2-carrying capacity obtained the necessary O2 even under hypoxia and compensated for the increased energy requirements caused by ocean acidification, which enabled their survival during the Permian-Triassic mass extinction. Thus, high O2-carrying capacity may have been crucial for the transition from the Paleozoic to the Modern Evolutionary Fauna.

The icing of overhead aluminum conductors is a serious threat to the safe operation of power systems. Various coatings for anti-icing have to face the challenge of durability. Superhydrophobic (SHP) coatings with self-healing properties are gradually showing good anti-icing durability. Herein, SHP self-healing surfaces with composite pore structures were successfully constructed on 1060 aluminum by two-step anodizing and infusion of triethoxy (1H,1H,2H, 2H-perfluoro-1-octyl)silane (POTS). A preparation process of composite pore structure consisting of upper layer of large pores and lower layer of small pores was designed and obtained via two-step anodizing. The impregnated POTS modified the composite pore structure to achieve superhydrophobicity while providing self-healing properties. The SHP surfaces with excellent performance were prepared by optimizing the appropriate current density and oxidation time. The contact and sliding angles were 166.5° and 0.5°, respectively. The frosting time was extended to 175 min, whereas the ice adhesion strength was lowered to 4.3 kPa. Additionally, the SHP surface with composite pore structure demonstrated superior durability and self-healing properties to single pore structure. The composite pore structure could maintain outstanding superhydrophobicity after 12 times of damage/self-healing compared to single pore structure (eight times). The SHP surface with composite pore structure successfully self-healed three times and withstood 135 icing/deicing cycles keeping the ice adhesion strength below 20 kPa, which is preferable to single pore structure (two times). The SHP self-healing aluminum surfaces developed in this work are highly promising for application and can promote the development of SHP coatings for anti-icing on power transmission lines.

Effects of minor Gd addition on the micro-structure, mechanical performance, and corrosion behavior of Mg-1Y alloys were systematically studied. With the addition of increased Gd content, the hydrogen evolution rate of Mg-Y-Gd alloys decreased from 2.0 to 0.5 mm/y. Moreover, the alloying Gd in Mg-Y-Gd alloys leaded to the transformation of the active Mg24Y5 phase into the Mg5(GdY) phase. The high corrosion resistance of Mg-1Y-0.6Gd alloy can be attributed to the fine grain size, uniform distribution of surface potential, and the formation of protective corrosion passivation film rich in Gd2O3 and Y2O3.

Abstract Objectives To investigate the prognostic value of computed tomography fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) in patients with diabetes and to establish a risk stratification model for major adverse cardiac event (MACE). Methods Diabetic patients with intermediate pre-test probability of coronary artery disease were prospectively enrolled. All patients were referred for coronary computed tomography angiography and followed up for at least 2 years. In the training cohort comprising of 957 patients, two models were developed: model1 with the inclusion of clinical and conventional imaging parameters, model2 incorporating the above parameters + CT-FFR. An internal validation cohort comprising 411 patients and an independent external test cohort of 429 patients were used to validate the proposed models. Results 1797 patients (mean age: 61.0 ± 7.0 years, 1031 males) were finally included in the present study. MACE occurred in 7.18% (129/1797) of the current cohort during follow- up. Recent advancements in terahertz (THz) wave technology have highlighted the criticality of circular-polarization detection, fostering the development of more compact, efficient on-chip THz circular-polarization detectors. In response to this technological imperative, we presented a chiral-antenna-integrated GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well (QW) THz detector. The chiral antenna selectively couples the incident light of a specific circular-polarization state into a surface-plasmon polariton wave that enhances the absorptance of the QWs by a factor of 12 relative to a standard 45° faceted device, and reflects a significant amount of the incident light of the orthogonal circular-polarization state. The circular-polarization selectivity is further enhanced by the QWs with a strong intrinsic anisotropy, resulting in a circular-polarization extinction ratio (CPER) as high as 26 at 6.52 THz. In addition, the operation band of the device can be adjusted by tuning the structural parameters of the chiral structure. Moreover, the device preserves a high performance for oblique incidence within a range of ±5°, and the device architecture is compatible with a focal plane array. This report communicates a promising approach for the development of miniaturized on-chip THz circular-polarization detectors.

Objective This study aims to assess the proportions of complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS I) in radial head fracture patients undergoing unilateral arthroplasty and to explore associated factors. Methods This is a prospective observational study. From March 2016 to May 2019, a total of 221 adult patients with radial head fracture patients were included in consecutive studies and completed the 1‐year follow‐up. All patients were treated by unilateral arthroplasty. At each follow‐up visit, the visual analogue scale was used to measure patients' pain level. Occurrence of CRPS I, which was diagnosed by Budapest criteria, was the main outcome collected at baseline and the 1‐, 3‐, 6‐, and 9‐month follow‐ups. The baseline data were collected before surgery and included demographic and clinical data. Independent t‐tests and χ2 tests were used as univariate analyses to compare the baseline data of patients with and without CRPS I. Multivariate analysis (Backword‐Wald) was used to identify factors independently associated with CRPS I. Results The proportion of CRPS I cases among radial head fracture patients undergoing unilateral arthroplasty was 11% (n = 24). A total of 19 (79%) patients were diagnosed with CRPS I within 1 month after surgery. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that female gender (odds ratios [OR]: 1.537; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.138–2.072), age younger than 60 years (OR: 1.682; 95% CI: 1.246–2.267), moderate and severe Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) pain (OR: 3.229; 95% CI: 2.392–4.351) and anxiety (OR: 83.346; 95% CI: 61.752–112.320) were independently associated with CRPS I. Conclusions This exploratory study reported that the incidence of CRPS I developing after radial head arthroplasty was 11%. Female sex, younger age, moderate and severe MEPS pain and anxiety patients seems more likely to develop CRPS I.

Background: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly affected management of cardiovascular disease around the world. The effect of the pandemic on volume of cardiovascular diagnostic procedures is not known. Objectives: This study sought to evaluate the effects of the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular diagnostic procedures and safety practices in Asia. Methods: The International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey to assess changes in cardiovascular procedure volume and safety practices caused by COVID-19. Testing volumes were reported for March 2020 and April 2020 and were compared to those from March 2019. Data from 180 centers across 33 Asian countries were grouped into 4 subregions for comparison. Results: Procedure volumes decreased by 47% from March 2019 to March 2020, showing recovery from March 2020 to April 2020 in Eastern Asia, particularly in China. The majority of centers cancelled outpatient activities and increased time per study. Practice changes included implementing physical distancing and restricting visitors. Although COVID testing was not commonly performed, it was conducted in one-third of facilities in Eastern Asia. The most severe reductions in procedure volumes were observed in lower-income countries, where volumes decreased 81% from March 2019 to April 2020. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic in Asia caused significant reductions in cardiovascular diagnostic procedures, particularly in low-income countries. Further studies on effects of COVID-19 on cardiovascular outcomes and changes in care delivery are warranted.

The linkage between temperature change and extinction rates in the fossil record is well-known qualitatively but little explored quantitatively. Here the authors investigate the relationship of marine animal extinctions with rate and magnitude of temperature change across the last 450 million years, and identify thresholds in climate change linked to mass extinctions.

Abstract Morphological complexity reflects the biological structure of an organism and is closely linked to its associated functions and phylogenetics. In animals with shells, ornamentation is an important characteristic of morphological complexity, and it has various functions. However, because of the variations in type, shape, density, and strength of ornamentation, a universal quantitative measure of morphological complexity for shelled animals is lacking. We propose an ornamentation index (OI) derived from 3D scanning technology and a virtual model for quantifying ornamentation complexity. This index is designed to measure the extent of folding associated with ornamentation, regardless of shape and size. Ornamentation indices were measured for 15 ammonite specimens from the Permian to Cretaceous, 2 modern bivalves, 2 gastropods from the Pliocene to the present, and a modern echinoid. Compared with other measurements, such as the fractal dimension, rugosity, and surface‐volume ratio, the OI displayed superiority in quantifying ornamentational complexity. The present study demonstrates that the OI is suitable for accurately characterizing and quantifying ornamentation complexity, regardless of shape and size. Therefore, the OI is potentially useful for comparing the ornamentational complexity of various organisms and can be exploited to provide further insight into the evolution of conchs. Ultimately, the OI can enhance our understanding of morphological evolution of shelled organisms, for example, whether shell ornaments simplify under ocean acidification or extinction, and how predation pressure is reflected in ornamentation complexity.

Neopterygii is the largest clade of ray-finned fishes, including Teleostei, Holostei, and their closely related fossil taxa. This clade was first documented in the Early Carboniferous and underwent rapid evolutionary radiation during the Early to Middle Triassic. This article describes a new perleidid neopterygian species, Teffichthys elegans sp. nov., based on 13 well-preserved specimens from the lower Daye Formation (Dienerian, Induan) in Guizhou, China. The new species documents one of the oldest perleidids, providing insights into the early diversification of this family. The results of a phylogenetic analysis recover Teffichthys elegans sp. nov. as the sister taxon to Teffichthys madagascariensis within the Perleididae. T. elegans sp. nov. shares three derived features of Perleididae: the length of the anteroventral margin of the dermohyal nearly half the length of the anterodorsal margin of the preopercle; the anteroventral margin of the preopercle nearly equal to the anterior margin of the subopercle in length; and the anteroventral margin of the preopercle one to two times as long as the anterodorsal margin of the preopercle. It possesses diagnostic features of Teffichthys but differs from T. madagascariensis by the following features: presence of three supraorbitals; six pairs of branchiostegal rays; relatively deep anterodorsal process of subopercle; absence of spine on the posterior margin of the jugal; and pterygial formula of D26/P14, A22, C36/T39-41. The Perleidiformes are restricted to include only the Perleididae, and other previously alleged ‘perleidiform’ families (e.g., Hydropessidae and Gabanellidae) are excluded to maintain the monophyly of the order. Similar to many other perleidids, T. elegans sp. nov. was likely a durophagous predator with dentition combining grasping and crushing morphologies. The new finding also may indicate a relatively complex trophic structure of the Early Triassic marine ecosystem in South China.

The successful doping of Yttrium (Y) in the Mg-Al layered double hydroxide film (MgAlY-LDHs) is obtained by hydrothermal way on the anodic oxide film of Mg-2Zn-4Y alloys. The composition, morphology and structure of MgAlY-LDHs were characterized by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), field-emission scanning electronic microscope (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) respectively. The electrochemical behavior was observed by polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Y ions can be incorporated into the MgAl-LDHs film in a completely isomorphic replacement manner and have the ability to improve the corrosion resistance of the film. Moreover, the ternary LDHs film grown in situ on the Mg-2Zn-4Y alloy provides a high possibility for the corrosion resistance of industrial metals. Circular polarization detection enables a wide range of applications. With the miniaturization of optoelectronic systems, integrated circular polarization detectors with native sensitivity to the spin state of light have become highly sought after. The key issues with this type of device are its low circular polarization extinction ratios (CPERs) and reduced responsivities. Metallic two-dimensional chiral metamaterials have been integrated with detection materials for filterless circular polarization detection. However, the CPERs of such devices are typically below five, and the light absorption in the detection materials is hardly enhanced and is even sometimes reduced. Here, we propose to sandwich multiple quantum wells between a dielectric two-dimensional chiral metamaterial and a metal grating to obtain both a high CPER and a photoresponse enhancement. The dielectric-metal-hybrid chiral metamirror integrated quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) exhibits a CPER as high as 100 in the long wave infrared range, exceeding all reported CPERs for integrated circular polarization detectors. The absorption efficiency of this device reaches 54%, which is 17 times higher than that of a standard 45° edge facet coupled device. The circular polarization discrimination is attributed to the interference between the principle-polarization radiation and the cross-polarization radiation of the chiral structure during multiple reflections and the structure-material double polarization selection. The enhanced absorption efficiency is due to the excitation of a surface plasmon polariton wave. The dielectric-metal-hybrid chiral mirror structure is compatible with QWIP focal plane arrays.

Objective: Cortical-limbic system neural circuit abnormalities are closely related to the onset of schizophrenia (SZ). The amygdala, hippocampus, cingulate, and prefrontal lobe are important components of the loop. In this study, we compared resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) between the amygdala/hippocampus and cingulate/prefrontal regions among patients with first-episode schizophrenia (FE-SZ), high risk populations with SZ (HR-SZ), and healthy controls (HCs). By discovering the abnormal pattern of the cortical-limbic system of SZ and HR-SZ, we attempted to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanism of SZ.Method: This study collected seventy-five FE-SZ patients, 59 HR-SZ, and 64 HCs. Analysis of variance and chi-square tests were used to analyze their demographic data. Analysis of covariance and post-hoc analysis were performed on the functional connectivity of the three groups. Finally, correlation analysis between the significant brain functional connectivity value and the scale score was performed.Results: The results of the analysis of covariance showed that there were significant differences in rs-FC between the amygdala and the right middle cingulate and between the hippocampus and the bilateral medial superior frontal gyrus among the three groups (Gaussian random field (GRF)-corrected voxel p < 0.001, cluster p < 0.05). Post hoc comparisons showed that the rs-FC of the amygdala—right middle cingulate and the hippocampus—bilateral medial superior frontal gyrus in patients with SZ was significantly lower than that of HR-SZ and HC (Bonferroni corrected p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the HR-SZ and HC groups. The results of the correlation analysis showed that rs-FC of the hippocampus-medial frontal gyrus in patients with SZ was positively correlated with core depression factor scores on the Hamilton Depression Scale (P = 0.006, R = 0.357).Conclusion: There were different patterns of functional connectivity impairment in the amygdala and hippocampal neural circuits in the schizophrenic cortical-limbic system, and these patterns may be more useful than genetics as state-related imaging changes of the disease.

Objective: We study the risk factors that affect the formation of striae gravidarum in women in Jiangsu Province of China under current living habits. Materials and methods: This sample is based on 400 primiparas from obstetric of the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University in Wuxi from February 2017 to October 2017. Among them, there are 200 pregnant women with striae gravidarum and 200 without striae gravidarum. Striae gravidarum predictors were selected such as age, height, pre-pregnancy BMI, postpartum BMI, daily sitting time, weight gain during pregnancy, fetal weight, and diet on maternal. Results: (1) The pregnant women who had striae gravidarum were generally lower in height than those who did not have striae gravidarum and had a higher BMI index than those who did not have striae gravidarum before and after childbirth. (2) In the pregnant women who have had striae gravidarum, the incidence of abdominal striae gravidarum in sedentary women is significantly lower than those in non-sedentary women, the incidence of striae gravidarum in legs is higher than those in non-sedentary women, and no significant difference in hip striae gravidarum. (3) In all pregnant women who have striae gravidarum, abdomen striae gravidarum tend to be lighter and leg striae gravidarum tends to be heavier in sedentary women, but no significant effect on the hip. (4) Regular consumption of honey, milk, trotters, freshwater fish, eggs, and tremella can reduce the incidence of striae gravidarum. Objective: This study is aimed to compare the analgesic effect and safety of preoperative (versus postoperative) meloxicam administration in femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) patients who underwent hip arthroscopy (HA). Methods: Totally, 136 FAI patients who scheduled for HA were recruited, then they were randomly assigned to preoperative administration (PREA) group (orally meloxicam 7.5 mg in 12h, 24h before operation, then orally 7.5 mg/d from 12h to Day 7 after operation; N=68) or postoperative administration (POSA) group (orally meloxicam 7.5 mg/d from 12h to Day 7 after operation; N=68) in 1:1 ratio. Furthermore, pain visual analog scale (VAS) score, patient satisfaction score, Harris hip score (HHS) and adverse events were assessed. Besides, the accumulated pethidine consumption for rescuing analgesia was calculated. Results: Acute pain VAS score at rest (Day1 – Day2) and pain VAS score at motion (Day1 – Day3) were decreased, meanwhile short-term patient satisfaction score (Day1–Day3) was increased in PREA group compared with POSA group; however, these scores in long-term period were of no difference between PREA group and POSA group (Day3–Month3). Furthermore, accumulated pethidine consumption on Day3 and Day7 were attenuated in PREA group compared with POSA group. Additionally, HHS at any assessed time points (Day7–Month3) did not differ between two groups. Besides, no difference in the incidence of adverse events was found between two groups. Conclusions: Preoperative meloxicam administration displays superior efficacy in short-term pain control, patient satisfaction improvement and attenuated consumption of rescue analgesia over postoperative meloxicam administration in FAI patients who underwent HA.

Cardiac pseudoaneurysms occur when a blood vessel wall is injured and the leaking blood is collected in the surrounding tissue. They are very rare events and have a high risk of rupture and poor prognosis. We report a case of right atrial pseudoaneurysm in a 54-year-old female patient diagnosed with breast cancer and lung metastasis. The patient underwent five intrapericardial infusions of cisplatin and nine cycles of systemic chemotherapy. Non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) was performed at follow-up evaluation during the chemotherapeutic process as this patient was contraindicated to iodine. CT without contrast and ultrasonography showed a crescent-shaped lesion near the right atrium but its nature could not be determined. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging with gadolinium contrast provided important information as an alternative enhanced imaging modality. By combining CT, ultrasonography and CMR images with the medical history of the patient, we inferred that the lesion was a pseudoaneurysm in the right atrium. This condition was related to the erosion of metastasized tumor cells or the accumulated cardiac toxicity of multiple cycles of chemotherapy or pericardiocentesis. This single case report suggests that cardiac rupture should be considered as a potential complication in patients with suspected pericardial metastasis. CMR imaging is an excellent tool for the detection of right atrial rupture.

The deep oceanic sediments were collected from the Challenger Deep in the southwestern part of the Mariana Trench. Considering the salt in the pore water, a modified method for determining the physical and mechanical properties of the deep-sea sediments was proposed, by which the geological engineering indices were measured and corrected. Through the scanning electronic microscope (SEM), the microstructures of the sediments were found to be composed of flocculation, with a large number of diatom debris and empty shells of organism around it. As a consequence, the porosity and compressibility are high; internal friction angle and cohesion are low. Besides high water content, high porosity, high liquid limit, high plasticity, high consolidation coefficient, low compressive modulus, low shear strength, low density, and low specific gravity, the deep-sea mining machine may slip and subside. This research can improve the understanding of the deep-sea sedimentary environment of the Challenger Deep in the southwestern part of the Mariana Trench and provide an essential reference for the parameter calibration as well as the basis for walking-characteristic study and optimization design of the deep-sea mining vehicle.

Background Whether statin treatment can improve hemodynamic status of coronary atherosclerotic plaque remains unknown. It is of clinical interest to explore the hemodynamic change of coronary lesions after statin treatment. Methods and Results Consecutive patients with intermediate pre‐test probability of coronary artery disease were prospectively enrolled and underwent baseline coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) as well as follow‐up CCTA. The primary end point was to determine the lesion‐specific change of △computed tomography‐derived fractional flow reserve (△CT‐FFR, defined as the change of CT‐FFR value across each lesion) after rosuvastatin treatment. The secondary end point was to compare the change of other plaque characteristics according to serial CCTA findings. 152 patients (mean age: 67.1±9.7 years, 100 men, mean follow‐up duration of 13.9±2.5 months) were finally included. In non‐calcified plaque subgroup, △CT‐FFR was significantly lower at follow‐up compared with baseline (0.051±0.010 versus 0.035±0.012, P=0.013). All other parameters were not found to be significantly different between baseline and follow‐up CCTA measurements. In calcified plaque and mixed plaque subgroups, all parameters showed no significant differences between baseline and follow‐up CCTA groups (P>0.05 for all). According to multivariate regression analysis, non‐calcified plaque was >2 times more likely than calcified plaque to observe the decrease of △CT‐FFR (adjusted hazard ratio: 2.05 [1.03–4.09], P=0.042). Conclusions In patients with mild to intermediate coronary stenosis, rosuvastatin treatment resulted in a reduction in lesion‐specific △CT‐FFR at mid‐term follow‐up. This hemodynamic improvement was mainly observed for non‐calcified lesions.

Since April 2014, new infections of H5N6 avian influenza virus (AIV) in humans and domestic poultry have caused considerable economic losses in the poultry industry and posed an enormous threat to human health worldwide. In previous research using gene sequence and phylogenetic analysis, we reported that H5N6 AIV isolated in February 2015 (ZH283) in Pallas’s sandgrouse was highly similar to that isolated in a human in December 2015 (A/Guangdong/ZQ874/2015), whereas a virus (i.e., SW8) isolated in oriental magpie-robin in 2014 was highly similar to that of A/chicken/Dongguan/2690/2013 (H5N6). However, the pathogenicity, transmissibility, and host immune-related response of chickens infected by those wild bird-origin H5N6 AIVs remain unknown. In response, we examined the viral distribution and mRNA expression profiles of immune-related genes in chickens infected with both viruses. Results showed that the H5N6 AIVs were highly pathogenic to chickens and caused not only systemic infection in multiple tissues, but also 100% mortality within 3–5 days post-infection. Additionally, ZH283 efficiently replicated in all tested tissues and transmitted among chickens more rapidly than SW8. Moreover, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that following infection with H5N6, AIVs immune-related genes remained active in a tissue-dependent manner, as well as that ZH283 induced mRNA expression profiles such as TLR3, TLR7, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-10, IL-8, and MHC-II to a greater extent than SW8 in the tested tissues of infected chickens. Altogether, our findings help to illuminate the pathogenesis and immunologic mechanisms of H5N6 AIVs in chickens.

In this paper, we propose a multi-modal 2D + 3D face recognition method for a smart city application based on a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and various kinds of sensors. Depth maps are exploited for the 3D face representation. As for feature extraction, we propose a new feature called Complete Local Derivative Pattern (CLDP). It adopts the idea of layering and has four layers. In the whole system, we apply CLDP separately on Gabor features extracted from a 2D image and depth map. Then, we obtain two features: CLDP-Gabor and CLDP-Depth. The two features weighted by the corresponding coefficients are combined together in the decision level to compute the total classification distance. At last, the probe face is assigned the identity with the smallest classification distance. Extensive experiments are conducted on three different databases. The results demonstrate the robustness and superiority of the new approach. The experimental results also prove that the proposed multi-modal 2D + 3D method is superior to other multi-modal ones and CLDP performs better than other Local Binary Pattern (LBP) based features.

Evaluation of vascular disrupting treatment (VDT) is generally based on tumor size and enhancement on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which, unfortunately, may be limited in providing satisfactory information. The purpose of the study is to evaluate consecutive changes of 20 rabbit VX2 liver tumors after VDT by dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) at a 3.0 T MR unit. Twenty four hours after intravenous injection of Combretastatin A-4-phosphate (CA4P) at 20 mg/kg, DCE-MRI derived Maximum Slope of Increase (MSI) and Positive Enhancement Integral (PEI) decreased sharply due to sudden shutting down of tumor feeding vessels. DWI derived Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC) in tumor periphery decreased because of ischemic cell edema. On day 4, an increase of MSI was probably caused by the recovery of blood supply. A remarkable increase of ADC represented a large scale of necrosis among tumors. On day 8, the blood perfusion further decreased and the extent of necrosis further increased, reflected by lower MSI and PEI values and higher ADC value. On day 12, a second decrease of ADC was noticed because the re-growth of periphery tumor. The experimental data indicate that the therapeutic effects of VDT may be noninvasively monitored with DCE-MRI (reflecting tumor blood perfusion) and DWI (reflecting the changes of histology), which provide powerful measures for assessment of anticancer treatments.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) fractional flow reserve (FFR)-derived functional SYNTAX score (FSSCT-FFR) is a valuable method for guiding treatment strategy in patients with multivessel coronary artery disease. Dynamic CT myocardial perfusion imaging (CT-MPI) demonstrates higher diagnostic accuracy than CT-FFR in identifying hemodynamically significant coronary artery disease. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of CT-MPI-derived FSS (FSSCT-MPI) with reference to invasive FSS. METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients with multivessel coronary artery disease who underwent dynamic CT-MPI+ coronary CT angiography and invasive coronary angiography or FFR within 4 weeks were consecutively included. Invasive (FSSinvasive) and noninvasive FSS (FSSCT-MPI and FSSCT-FFR) were calculated by an online calculator, which assigned points to lesions with hemodynamic significance (defined as FFRinvasive ≤0.80, invasive coronary angiography diameter stenosis ≥90%, CT-FFR <≤.80, and myocardial ischemia on CT-MPI). Weighted K value and net reclassification index were calculated to determine the consistency and incremental discriminatory power of FSSCT-MPI. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used for the comparison of FSSCT-MPI and FSSCT-FFR in detecting intermediate- to high-risk patients. RESULTS: A total of 119 patients (96 men; 64.6+10.6 years) with 305 obstructive lesions were included. The average FSSCT-MPI, FSSCT-FFR, and FSSinvasive were 15.58+13.03, 16.18+13.30, and 13.11 + 12.22, respectively. The agreement on risk classification based on the FSSCT-MPI tertiles was good (weighted K, 0.808). With reference to FSSinvasive, FSSCT-MPI correctly reclassified 27 (22.7%) patients from the intermediate- to high SYNTAX score group to the low-score group (net reclassification index, 0.30; P<0.001). In patients with severe calcification, FSSCT-MPI had better diagnostic value than FSSCT-FFR in detecting intermediate- to high-risk patients when compared with FSSinvasive (area under the curve, 0.976 versus 0.884; P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Noninvasive FSS derived from CT-MPI is feasible and has strong concordance with FSSinvasive.
