Objective. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) and noise exposure in different positions within manufacturing facilities that primarily produce electronic devices, wooden furniture and hardware machinery in southern China and to investigate the practical application of the risk assessment model. Methods. Noise exposure data were collected from 115 workers in 10 manufacturing industries in southern China through on-site investigation. Subsequently, sample testing was conducted in accordance with Chinese standards. The 31 job positions investigated were classified into two similar exposure groups (SEGs). The occupational health risk assessment (OHRA) model was used to evaluate the risks of ONIHL in various job positions. Results. More than half of the positions in both groups had noise levels exceeding 85 dB. In both SEGs, male workers exhibited similar risk patterns of acquiring hearing impairment, with a more pronounced and earlier risk of hearing loss compared to female workers. Age was also found to be a risk factor for hearing impairments. Conclusion. The ORHA model demonstrated a positive correlation between noise exposure levels and NIHL. BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are among the most commonly reported occupational diseases worldwide. Healthcare workers, such as medical radiation staff, are susceptible to WMSDs. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) and their influencing factors among professionals working in medical radiation institutions. METHODS: This study employed cluster random sampling and included 1669 medical radiation staff members from medical units and institutions in Guangdong Province, China. The modified Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire was used to analyze musculoskeletal symptoms in nine body regions over the previous 12 months. The chi-square test was used to analyze the association between WMSDs and these factors. Logistic regression was used to identify potential influencing factors. RESULTS: This study collected 1669 complete and valid questionnaires. The overall self-reported prevalence of WMSDs among medical radiation staff was 15.3%. Multivariate logistic regression showed that gender, alcohol consumption, senior rank hospital, repetitive motions at work, overtime work, and prolonged maintenance of the same posture increased the risk of WMSDs (P < 0.05). Adjustable work chairs and comfortable workplace temperatures were protective factors against WMSDs (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Being female, alcohol consumption, higher hospital level, repetitive motions, working overtime, and maintaining a single posture contributed to the risk of neck, shoulder, and lower back WMSDs among medical radiation staff. Prevention and management strategies to facilitate reduction in adverse health effects on the occupational health of the medical radiation staff should be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play important roles in the occurrence and development in diabetic cardiomyopathy (DC). Ferulic acid is one of the ubiquitous compounds in diet. Sodium ferulate (SF) is its sodium salt. SF has potent free radical scavenging activity and can effectively scavenge ROS. The study investigated the effect of SF on cardioprotection in diabetic rats. The diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin (STZ) were treated with SF (110mg/kg) by gavage per day for 12 weeks. Results showed that the levels of nitric oxide (NO) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in plasma and myocardium in SF-treated group were significantly higher than those in diabetic control group. The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in plasma and myocardium in SF-treated group were significantly lower than those in diabetic control group. Expression of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) in myocardium in SF-treated group was apparently lower than that in diabetic control group. Compared with normal control group, electron micrographs of myocardium in diabetic control group showed apparently abnormality, while that was significantly ameliorated in SF-treated group. The study demonstrated that SF has a cardioprotective effect via increasing SOD activity and NO levels in plasma and myocardium, inhibiting oxidative stress in plasma and myocardium, and inhibiting the expression of CTGF in myocardium in diabetes rats.

Objectives. This study assessed the occupational health risks of work group exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) in the electroplating and electronics industries in China. Methods. The UK Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Essential, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Singapore and the Chinese semiquantitative risk assessment models were used to assess the risks of TCE. Twenty degreasing groups and 14 cleaning groups were recruited in the companies selected. Results. The concentrations of TCE in 66.7% of the cleaning groups and 35.0% of the degreasing groups exceeded the permissible concentration time-weighted average (PC-TWA) in China, and the concentrations of TCE in 100.0% of the cleaning groups and 70.0% of the degreasing groups exceeded the permissible concentration short-term exposure limit (PC-STEL) in China. Over 60.0% of the work groups were evaluated at high risk and over half of the work groups were evaluated at high cancer risk by the risk assessment models. Conclusion. Most work groups exposed to TCE in the electroplating and electronics industries in China are at high risk. The cleaning groups may have a higher risk for TCE exposure. The Chinese exposure index method and the synthesis index method are more practical than the other methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To explore the clinical efficacy of high-dose intravenous gammaglobulin (IVIG) in acute Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) and its effect on serum concentrations of inflammatory factors., Methods: A total of 111 patients with acute GBS were enrolled in this retrospective study. They were admitted to Ji'nan City People's Hospital from January 2019 to December 2020. According to the treatment method, the patients were divided into a control group (n=53, received routine treatment) and an observation group (n=58, received high-dose IVIG in addition to routine treatment). The clinical efficacy, Barthel index for activities of daily living (ADL), serum concentrations of inflammatory factors (IL-6, TNF-α, NO) in peripheral blood, potential of electromyography signals, abnormal rates of motor and sensory conduction velocity, and F wave abnormality rate were compared. Also, the risk factors affecting IVIG treatment efficacy were analyzed., Results: The overall response rate, and Barthel index for ADL were higher, while serum concentrations of IL-6, TNF-α, and NO were lower in the observation group than the control group (all P<0.05). There were differences in spontaneous potential and motor potential before and after treatment in both groups (both P<0.05). The observation group showed lower abnormal rates of motor and sensory conduction velocity, F wave abnormality rate, and prolonged latency rate than the control group (all P<0.05). Concomitant lung infection, respiratory muscle involvement, and treatment with high-dose IVIG >2 weeks from onset were independent risk factors for treatment efficacy., Conclusion: High-dose IVIG has good clinical efficacy in treating acute GBS by reducing the serum concentrations of IL-6, TNF-α, and NO, improving patients' abnormal muscle electrical condition, and promoting recovery.
