2. Insulating Parent Phase and Distinct Doping Evolution to Superconductivity in Single-Layer FeSe/SrTiO3 Films

Abstract

The single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 (FeSe/STO) films have attracted much attention because of their simple crystal structure, distinct electronic structure and record high superconducting transition temperature (Tc). The origin of the dramatic Tc enhancement in single-layer FeSe/STO films and the dichotomy of superconductivity between single-layer and multiple-layer FeSe/STO films are still under debate. Here we report a comprehensive high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy measurements on the electronic structure evolution with doping in single-layer and multiple-layer FeSe/STO films. We find that the single-layer FeSe/STO films have a distinct parent phase and a route of doping evolution to superconductivity that are fundamentally different from multiple-layer FeSe/STO films. The parent phase of the single-layer FeSe/STO films is insulating, and its doping evolution is very similar to that of doping a Mott insulator in cuprate superconductors. In multiple-layer FeSe/STO films, high-Tc superconductivity occurs by suppressing the nematic order in the parent compound with electron doping. The single-layer FeSe/STO films represent the first clear case in the iron-based superconductors that the parent compound is an insulator. Our observations of the unique parent state and doping evolution in the single-layer FeSe/STO films provide key insight in understanding its record high-Tc superconductivity. They also provide a new route of realizing superconductivity in iron-based superconductors that is common in high temperature cuprate superconductors.

Abstract

The detailed information of the electronic structure is the key for understanding the nature of charge density wave (CDW) order and its relationship with superconducting order in microscopic level. In this paper, we present high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on the three-dimensional (3D) hole-like Fermi surface around the Brillouin zone center in a prototypical qusi-one-dimensional CDW and superconducting system ZrTe3. Double Fermi surface sheets are clearly resolved for the 3D hole-like Fermi surface around the zone center. The 3D Fermi surface shows a pronounced shrinking with increasing temperature. In particular, the quasiparticle scattering rate along the 3D Fermi surface experiences an anomaly near the charge density wave transition temperature of ZrTe3 (~63 K). Signature of electron-phonon coupling is observed with a dispersion kink at ~20 meV; the strength of the electron-phonon coupling around the 3D Fermi surface is rather weak. These results indicate that the 3D Fermi surface is also closely connected to the charge-density-wave transition and suggest a more global impact on the entire electronic structure induced by CDW phase transition in ZrTe3.

Abstract

The parent compounds of the high-temperature cuprate superconductors are Mott insulators. It has been generally agreed that understanding the physics of the doped Mott insulators is essential to understanding the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. A natural starting point is to elucidate the basic electronic structure of the parent compound. Here we report comprehensive high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, a Mott insulator and a prototypical parent compound of the cuprates. Multiple underlying Fermi surface sheets are revealed for the first time. The high energy waterfall-like band dispersions exhibit different behavior near the nodal and antinodal regions. Two distinct energy scales are identified: a d-wave-like low energy peak dispersion and a nearly isotropic lower Hubbard band gap. These observations provide new information on the electronic structure of the cuprate parent compound, which is important for understanding the anomalous physical properties and superconductivity mechanism of the high temperature cuprate superconductors., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present a compact high-efficiency and high-average-power diode-side-pumped Nd:YAG rod laser oscillator operated with a linearly polarized fundamental mode. The oscillator resonator is based on an L-shaped convex--convex cavity with an improved module and a dual-rod configuration for birefringence compensation. Under a pump power of 344 W, a linearly polarized average output power of 101.4 W at 1064 nm is obtained, which corresponds to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 29.4%. The laser is operated at a repetition rate of 400 Hz with a beam quality factor of [M.sup.2] = 1.14. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest optical-to-optical efficiency for a side-pumped [TEM.sub.00] Nd:YAG rod laser oscillator with a 100-W-level output ever reported. Abstract

A nanosecond 1.3 [micro]m Nd:YAG laser-pumped external cavity eye-safe Raman laser based on [BaWO.sub.4] crystal is efficiently demonstrated. The average power of 1.5 [micro]m was 0.60W operating at a pulse repetition rate of 1.7 kHz and an incident pump power of 4.14W. Conversion efficiency of 14.5% and a high slope efficiency of 54.5% have been achieved. Pulse shortening was obviously observed. The pulse duration of the first Stokes was about 40ns, much shorter than the fundamental pulse with a duration of ~220 ns. OCIS codes: 140.3550, 140.3580, 190.5650, 230.5750.

Abstract

AbstractA high-energy pulsed vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) solid-state laser at 177 nm with high peak power by the sixth harmonic of a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) amplifier in a KBe2BO3F2prism-coupled device was demonstrated. The ultraviolet (UV) pump laser is a 352 ps pulsed, spatial top-hat super-Gaussian beam at 355 nm. A high energy of a 7.12 mJ VUV laser at 177 nm is obtained with a pulse width of 255 ps, indicating a peak power of 28 MW, and the conversion efficiency is 9.42% from 355 to 177 nm. The measured results fitted well with the theoretical prediction. It is the highest pulse energy and highest peak power ever reported in the VUV range for any solid-state lasers. The high-energy, high-peak-power, and high-spatial-uniformity VUV laser is of great interest for ultra-fine machining and particle-size measurements using UV in-line Fraunhofer holography diagnostics.

Abstract

We report on a high-power (cw) red laser at 671 nm by intracavity frequency doubling of a double-end-pumped 1342 nm Nd:YV[O.sub.4] laser based on the nonlinear crystal Li[B.sub.3][O.sub.5]. A red output power of 3.38 W is obtained for a pump power of 27 W, with corresponding optical-to-optical efficiency of 12.5%. The 671 nm beam is nearly diffraction limited. Abstract

A mathematical model was used to examine the time dynamics of a compound-cavity optical parametric oscillator. The model accounts for the cavity-Q factors, pump depletion, nonlinear coupling constants and the pump field strength. The computational results revealed that this type of cavity is very effective. These results are confirmed by experimental data obtained from testing a compound-cavity OPO using a grazing-incidence prism and grating as dispersive elements.
