Abstract Objective In this study, we added laboratory animal ethics education into both didactic sessions and practical sessions the general surgery laboratory course, with the didactic sessions focus on teaching the fundamental principles of laboratory animal ethics, while the practical sessions emphasize the application of these principles in laboratory classes and have assessed the changes in medical students' perception of laboratory animal ethics following medical students exposure to such education. Methods One hundred and eighty-nine third-year medical students from Wuhan University's Second Clinical College completed a laboratory animal ethics awareness questionnaire and a laboratory animal ethics written examination before and after laboratory animal ethics education. Results After receiving laboratory animal ethics education, the percentage of students who supported euthanasia for the execution of animals and humane treatment of laboratory animals were 95.2% and 98.8%, respectively, which did not differ from the 94.9% and 96.4% observed before the education. Abstract The key motivation of this paper lies in the development of a high‐level decision‐making framework for autonomous overtaking maneuvers on two‐lane country roads with dynamic oncoming traffic. To generate an optimal and safe decision sequence for such scenario, an innovative high‐level decision‐making framework that combines model predictive control (MPC) and switching control methodologies is introduced. Specifically, the autonomous vehicle is abstracted and modelled as a switched system. This abstraction allows vehicle to operate in different modes corresponding to different high‐level decisions. It establishes a crucial connection between high‐level decision‐making and low‐level behaviour of the autonomous vehicle. Furthermore, barrier functions and predictive models that account for the relationship between the autonomous vehicle and oncoming traffic are incorporated. This technique enables us to guarantee the satisfaction of constraints, while also assessing performance within a prediction horizon. By repeatedly solving the online constrained optimization problems, we not only generate an optimal decision sequence for overtaking safely and efficiently but also enhance the adaptability and robustness. This adaptability allows the system to respond effectively to potential changes and unexpected events. Finally, the performance of the proposed MPC framework is demonstrated via simulations of four driving scenarios, which shows that it can handle multiple behaviours.

The core-shell structure Fe3O4@C magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized with superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanosphere as a magnetic core, and soluble starch resin as a carbon source via a solvothermal method. Silica-iron oxide and Fe3O4@C carriers with a core-shell structure were prepared by carbonization of organic material on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, Fe3O4@C supported Pd were processed into magnetic nano-catalysts with core-shell structure, and their catalytic properties were investigated. The resulting environmentally friendly magnetic material can be used to degrade dye wastewater. The structure of magnetic nanoparticles was characterized using TEM, XRD and VSM. The effects of preparation conditions in the structure of the Fe3O4@C magnetic nanoparticles were taken out. The results indicate that from XRD, the magnetic nano particles Fe3O4@C synthesized of carbon sources have amorphous carbon diffraction peak except for all the characteristic peaks of Fe3O4. The saturation magnetization Fe3O4, Fe3O4@SiO2 and Fe3O4@C – 59.14 emu/g, 49.12 emu/g and 27.95 emu/g, respectively.

Abstract Background On July 4, 2021, China officially introduced the drug patent linkage system, which has made more localized adjustments than have similar systems in the US and South Korea. This study describes the characteristics and outcomes of China’s patent linkage system. Methods For this study, we used the database of China’s patent information registration platform for marketed drugs to capture all listed patents and patent certifications from June 25, 2021, to June 30, 2023. We used descriptive statistics for the above data to assess the impact of patent linkage on branded drug manufacturers, generic drug manufacturers, and the public’s access to medicines. Results During the study period, the patents of 632 branded drugs were listed, and 5058 ANDAs submitted patent certifications to the Registration Platform. Of these 632 branded drugs, 462 (73.1%) drugs were approved before the year of patent registration, and the average number of listed patents per drug was 1.8, with a standard deviation of 1.4. However, of these 5058 ANDAs, P1 certifications accounted for 85.1%, and P3 and P4 certifications accounted for 16% combined. In addition, according to the detailed statistics of P2 certifications, we found that the proportion of patent invalidation cases was 46.4%. The remaining validity of the patents corresponding to P3 certifications was longer, with a median value of 17 months, and the IQR was 10-30.75, ranging from − 2 to 204 months. Conclusions China’s patent linkage aims to promote the balance of multiple interests —innovation, imitation and public health—and has its own system characteristics. Patent listing and patent certification are the key indicators reflecting the implementation effect of the system. From the perspective of system outcomes, ANDAs have been connected to the patent linkage system in an orderly manner, but the growth of patent challenges is not obvious. Moreover, manufacturers of foreign branded drugs that have not yet entered the Chinese market need to pay more attention to the role of patent listing.

Abstract Background Surgery combined with radiotherapy substantially escalates the likelihood of encountering complications in early-stage cervical squamous cell carcinoma(ESCSCC). We aimed to investigate the feasibility of Deep-learning-based radiomics of intratumoral and peritumoral MRI images to predict the pathological features of adjuvant radiotherapy in ESCSCC and minimize the occurrence of adverse events associated with the treatment. Methods A dataset comprising MR images was obtained from 289 patients who underwent radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection between January 2019 and April 2022. The dataset was randomly divided into two cohorts in a 4:1 ratio.The postoperative radiotherapy options were evaluated according to the Peter/Sedlis standard. We extracted clinical features, as well as intratumoral and peritumoral radiomic features, using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression. We constructed the Clinical Signature (Clinic_Sig), Radiomics Signature (Rad_Sig) and the Deep Transformer Learning Signature (DTL_Sig). Additionally, we fused the Rad_Sig with the DTL_Sig to create the Deep Learning Radiomic Signature (DLR_Sig). We evaluated the prediction performance of the models using the Area Under the Curve (AUC), calibration curve, and Decision Curve Analysis (DCA). Results The DLR_Sig showed a high level of accuracy and predictive capability, as demonstrated by the area under the curve (AUC) of 0.98(95% CI: 0.97–0.99) for the training cohort and 0.79(95% CI: 0.67–0.90) for the test cohort. In addition, the Hosmer-Lemeshow test, which provided p-values of 0.87 for the training cohort and 0.15 for the test cohort, respectively, indicated a good fit. ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess the clinical effectiveness and safety of electroacupuncture (EA) for the treatment of postpartum depression (PPD).MethodsWe systematically retrieved relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from electronic databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, EMBASE, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Chinese Biological Medical Database, and the Wanfang database from their inception to November 2023. The outcomes measured were the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) scores, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) scores, adverse events (AEs), and the total response rate. The study aimed to estimate heterogeneity, publication bias, mean difference (MD), and risk ratios (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs).ResultsThis study included 12 RCTs with a total of 1364 participants (571 in the treatment group and 793 in the control group) for analysis. The results of the meta-analysis indicated that EA did not significantly reduce HAMD (MD = 1.49, 95% CI = [−0.30, 3.27], P = 0.1, I2 = 0%) and EPDS (MD = 1.12, 95% CI = [−1.62, 3.85], P = 0.42, I2 = 32%) scores compared to sham EA among patients with PPD, resulting in low heterogeneity. In terms of the total response rate, the EA group exhibited superior results compared to the placebo group (RR = 1.77, 95% CI = [1.15, 2.74], P = 0.01, I2 = 0%) and the sham EA group (RR = 1.2, 95% CI = [1.02, 4.4], P = 0.02, I2 = 0%), with statistical significance and low heterogeneity. The incidence of AEs was lower, also with low heterogeneity (RR = 0.9, 95% CI = [0.57, 1.43], P = 0.66, I2 = 12%).ConclusionThe current evidence indicates that the effectiveness and safety of EA in the treatment of PPD warrant affirmation. However, EA does not demonstrate superiority over sham EA in reducing HAMD and EPDS scores in patients with PPD. This paper presents a different way using crumb rubber and fine sand totally replaced for silica sand within ECC mixtures to make rubberized engineered cementitious composites (R-ECC) to solve the issues of high construction cost of the road-bridge link slab for fully jointless bridges (FJBs). The crumb rubber with a size of 80 CR was replaced with fine sand from a volume rate of 5–20% in multiples of 5% to prepare the R-ECC material. Five different R-ECC mixtures (CR0-CR20) with different mix designs were prepared and tested, then an optimum mix proportion for the R-ECC mixtures was found. An R-ECC road-bridge link slab made of the optimum mix proportion which replace with fine sand in a volume rate of 15% was constructed, and its absorptive deformation capacity, tensile performance, and crack distribution under the most unfavourable load (temperature drop load) were studied. It is found that the R-ECC slab has good absorptive deformation capacity, crack control capacity and better internal force distribution. Therefore, R-ECC mixtures can be utilized for road-bridge link slab construction. Then, a sensitivity finite element comparative analysis was carried out considering the content of crumb rubbers, the friction coefficient and the slab length. It is found that the design length has a greater influence on the tensile performance of the R-ECC slab than other factors. Finally, a preliminary design theory of road-bridge link slab for FJBs has been established.

Maillard reaction products (MRPs) derived from rice protein isolate hydrolysate and D-xylose, with or without L-cysteine, were developed as a potential meat flavoring. The combined impact of temperature (80–140 °C) and cysteine on fundamental physicochemical characteristics, antioxidant activity, and flavor of MRPs were investigated through assessments of pH, color, UV–visible spectra, fluorescence spectra, free amino acids, volatile compounds, E-nose, E-tongue, and sensory evaluation. Results suggested that increasing temperature would reduce pH, deepen color, promote volatile compounds formation, and reduce the overall umami and bitterness. Cysteine addition contributed to the color inhibition, enhancement of DPPH radical-scavenging activity and reducing power, improvement in mouthfulness and continuity, reduction of bitterness, and the formation of sulfur compounds responsible for meaty flavor. Overall, MRPs prepared at 120 °C with cysteine addition could be utilized as a potential meat flavoring with the highest antioxidant activity and relatively high mouthfulness, continuity, umami, meaty aroma, and relatively low bitterness.

Morphological alterations in dendritic spines have been linked to changes in functional communication between neurons that affect learning and memory. Kinesin-4 KIF21A helps organize the microtubule-actin network at the cell cortex by interacting with KANK1; however, whether KIF21A modulates dendritic structure and function in neurons remains unknown. In this study, we found that KIF21A was distributed in a subset of dendritic spines, and that these KIF21A-positive spines were larger and more structurally plastic than KIF21A-negative spines. Furthermore, the interaction between KIF21A and KANK1 was found to be critical for dendritic spine morphogenesis and synaptic plasticity. Knockdown of either KIF21A or KANK1 inhibited dendritic spine morphogenesis and dendritic branching, and these deficits were fully rescued by coexpressing full-length KIF21A or KANK1, but not by proteins with mutations disrupting direct binding between KIF21A and KANK1 or binding between KANK1 and talin1. Knocking down KIF21A in the hippocampus of rats inhibited the amplitudes of long-term potentiation induced by high-frequency stimulation and negatively impacted the animals’ cognitive abilities. Taken together, our findings demonstrate the function of KIF21A in modulating spine morphology and provide insight into its role in synaptic function.

ABSTRACTNatural pigments derived from microorganisms have many advantages and are widely studied in the food industry. A filamentous fungus, DBFL05, was identified as Aspergillus ustus, which produces a bright and abundant brown pigment. This extracellular, water-soluble pigment is highly polar and slightly soluble in alcohol but insoluble in other organic solvents. The pigment is stable under sunlight, at pH 2–10, and below 100°C. However, it is sensitive to Zn2+, Fe3+, Fe2+, and Cu2+. The pigment is mainly composed of two chemical components, pyrropyrazine diketone and dianthrone, and is classified as a polyketone pigment. Both components of the pigment exhibit inhibitory effects on bacteria and scavenging abilities for •OH and DPPH. The pigment showed no significant toxicity to plants and low toxicity to brine shrimp larvae. These findings indicate that the easily obtainable A. ustus pigment is a polyketone with attractive colour, stability, safety, and bioactivity.

In this study, chromatographic and mass spectrometry conditions, sample cleanup and extraction, composition and ratio of salt and purifiers were optimized, which established a high-throughput screening method for 11 plant growth regulators and 79 antibiotic drugs in sprout vegetables by ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Samples were extracted by 1% acetonitrile-EDTA-mcllvaine buffer solution, purified by QuEChERS, and separated by ACQUITY UPLC HSS T3 column with gradient elution. Electrospray positive and negative ion mode was used in multi-reaction monitoring mode, and matrix curve external standard method was used to quantify. The limits of quantitation of 90 compounds were in the range of 0.1~15.4 μg/kg. The average recoveries were in the range of 42.2%~138.6% with relative standard deviations lower than 17.2%. In this study, simultaneous, rapid and high-throughput screening and detection of 90 high-risk substances in sprout vegetables were established, which is conducive to a more full understanding of the quality and safety problems of sprout vegetables.

Despite prevalent student mental and behavioral health (MBH) needs in rural communities, school mental health systems have not been thoroughly examined in rural areas and lack the perspectives of individuals who often help implement and utilize these systems (i.e., educators and caregivers). This study examined rural caregivers and educators' perspectives on student mental health, including (a) MBH needs in their school and community, (b) types of MBH options and services available for students, (c) barriers to the provision of MBH services, and (d) facilitators that aid the provision of MBH services. Twenty-one caregivers and 20 educators from three rural school districts and one town school district participated in focus group interviews. Thematic analysis of the focus group data revealed school and community factors that may be impeding student MBH as well as key facilitators that could promote student MBH. Findings specifically pointed to the importance of interconnecting schools, communities, and families through effective communication and infrastructure support.

Objectives: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) virus (SFTSV) is an emerging tick-borne bunyavirus with a high pathogenicity. Little is known about the longitudinal dynamics of the SFTSV-specific neutralizing antibody (NAb) and the related factors in patients with SFTS. Methods: A prospective cohort study of patients with laboratory-confirmed SFTS were conducted. Antiglomerulonephritis-immunoglobulin G (anti-Gn-IgG) and NAb titers were examined in serially collected serum samples, and their dynamic features were analyzed. Results: NAb was initially detected at 15 days after symptom onset in surviving patients with SFTS, with positive rates of 37.21% (16/43), whereas neither anti-Gn-IgG antibody nor NAb was detected in patients with fatal SFTS during their hospitalization. The NAb levels reached the peak at 2 months after symptom onset, and then gradually declined, with a rapid downward trend from 6 months to 4 years and a relatively slow downward trend from 5 to 10 years. Abstract Background Incidental thymus region masses during thoracic examinations are not uncommon. The clinician’s decision-making for treatment largely depends on imaging findings. Due to the lack of specific indicators, it may be of great value to explore the role of radiomics in risk categorization of the thymic epithelial tumors (TETs). Methods Four databases (PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library) were screened to identify eligible articles reporting radiomics models of diagnostic performance for risk categorization in TETs patients. The quality assessment of diagnostic accuracy studies 2 (QUADAS-2) and radiomics quality score (RQS) were used for methodological quality assessment. The pooled area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), sensitivity and specificity with their 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Results A total of 2134 patients in 13 studies were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled AUC of 11 studies reporting high/low-risk histologic subtypes was 0.855 (95% CI, 0.817–0.893), while the pooled AUC of 4 studies differentiating stage classification was 0.826 (95% CI, 0.817–0.893). Meta-regression revealed no source of significant heterogeneity. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that the best diagnostic imaging was contrast enhanced computer tomography (CECT) with largest pooled AUC (0.873, 95% CI 0.832–0.914). Publication bias was found to be no significance by Deeks’ funnel plot. Conclusions This present study shows promise for preoperative selection of high-risk TETs patients based on radiomics signatures with current available evidence. However, methodological quality in further studies still needs to be improved for feasibility confirmation and clinical application of radiomics-based models in predicting risk categorization of the thymic epithelial tumors.

To make the polyimide (PI) composite material having both heat resistance and magnetic permeability, Fe3O4/PI magnetic polyimide composite powder was synthesized by one-step solvothermal method. 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA) as monomers, ether anhydride polyamic acid (PAA) was designed and prepared by Fe3+ and polyimide precursor-polyamic acid triethylamine salt (PAAS) was reacted in a reactor, and the PI/Fe3O4 composite powders were synthesized under the condition of high temperature and high pressure. The obtained PI/Fe3O4 composite powders were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy, microscopic morphology and thermal properties. The morphology and structure of the samples were both characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The thermal properties of the composite microspheres were studied via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the magnetic properties were determined by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The saturation magnetization decreases gradually, increasing the polyimide content, with a saturation magnetization of PI/Fe3O4 determined to be 20.29 emu/g.

The goals of this study are to propose a method to minimize the waste of buildings’ exterior walls and to respond to practical technical reports on disaster resistance and reductions in resource extraction. This study’s scientific value is its testing of new nearly zero-waste materials and their construction methods for external walls. Four cases using a bamboo and pozzolana wall construction method between 2016 and 2021 in Southern Taiwan were examined. The results show that the materials can be decomposed on site to achieve the goal of nearly zero waste. Steel structures and exterior walls can provide toughness and breathability to resist earthquakes and hot and humid climates. Traditional construction techniques contain elements of technological change and can transcend outdated regulations. The exterior wall materials in this study can replace the local high-carbon-emitting mining industry and are a feasible way to actively respond to net-zero emissions.

ABSTRACTThe segmented negative-strand RNA viruses (sNSVs) include highly pathogenic human and animal viruses such as Lassa virus (LASV), severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV), and influenza A virus (IAV). One of the conserved mechanisms at the stage of genome transcription of sNSVs is the cap-snatching process, providing druggable targets for the development of antivirals. SFTSV is an emerging tick-borne sNSV that causes severe hemorrhagic fever with a high fatality rate of 12%–50%. Here, we determined the correlation between death outcome and downregulation of the WNT-CTNNB1 signaling pathway through transcriptomic analysis of blood samples collected from SFTS patients. We further demonstrated that SFTSV affected this pathway by downregulating the mRNA levels of a series of pathway-related genes, including CTNNB1. Loss-of-function mutations or inhibitors targeting SFTSV cap-snatching activity effectively alleviated the inhibition of the WNT-CTNNB1 signaling pathway. Exogenous activation of the WNT-CTNNB1 signaling pathway enhanced SFTSV replication, while inhibition of this pathway reduced SFTSV replication. Treatment with a WNT-CTNNB1 signaling pathway inhibitor attenuated viral replication and decreased fatality in mice. Notably, downregulation of the WNT-CTNNB1 signaling pathway was also observed for other sNSVs, including LASV and IAV. These results suggested that RNAs related to the WNT-CTNNB1 signaling pathway might be utilized as a primer “pool” in a cap-snatching manner for viral transcription, which provides effective targets for the development of broad-spectrum antivirals against sNSVs.IMPORTANCEOne of the conserved mechanisms at the stage of genome transcription of segmented negative-strand RNA viruses (sNSVs) is the cap-snatching process, which is vital for sNSVs transcription and provides drugable targets for the development of antivirals. However, the specificity of RNAs snatched by sNSV is still unclear. By transcriptomics analysis of whole blood samples from SFTS patients, we found WNT-CTNNB1 signaling pathway was regulated according to the course of the disease. We then demonstrated that L protein of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) could interact with mRNAs of WNT-CTNNB1 signaling pathway-related gene, thus affecting WNT-CTNNB1 signaling pathway through its cap-snatching activity. Activation of WNT-CTNNB1 signaling pathway enhanced SFTSV replication, while inhibition of this pathway decreased SFTSV replication in vitro and in vivo. These findings suggest that WNT-associated genes may be the substrate for SFTSV “cap-snatching”, and indicate a conserved sNSVs replication mechanism involving WNT-CTNNB1 signaling.

Objective To describe the occurrence of general surgical complications and establish prediction models for different types of complications based on a multicenter cohort study. Methods Based on Modern Surgery and Anesthesia Safety Management System Construction and Promotion(MSCP), patients who underwent general surgery in 4 hospitals from January to June 2015 and from January to June 2016 were selected as participants, and perioperative data of patients were collected. Logistic regression was used to identify risk factors and predict complications. Results Among 19 223 patients, 830(4.32%) had complications. Among participants who had complications, 371(44.70%) had incision complications, 190(22.89%) had fistula complications, 310(37.35%) had infection complications, 161(19.40%) had failure complications, and 104(12.5%) died. There were significant differences in the risk factors of different types of complications. The risk factors of incision,infection and failure covered the whole perioperative period, while fistula complications mainly focused on the difficulty of surgery and postoperative treatment, and for death outcomes, postoperative risk factors were more severe than preoperative risk factors. The areas under the curves of prediction were between 0.80-0.93. Conclusions In general surgery, different types of complications have different risk factors. The targeted prediction model can avoid the rough simplification of complications and fuzzy influence of each factor, and can provide reference for the prevention of complications.
