Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites present a compelling opportunity for the establishment of a global quantum information network. However, satellite-based entanglement distribution from a networking perspective has not been fully investigated. Existing works often do not account for satellite movement over time when distributing entanglement and/or often do not permit entanglement distribution along inter-satellite links, which are two shortcomings we address in this paper. We first define a system model which considers both satellite movement over time and inter-satellite links. We next formulate the optimal entanglement distribution (OED) problem under this system model and show how to convert the OED problem in a dynamic physical network to one in a static logical graph which can be used to solve the OED problem in the dynamic physical network. We then propose a polynomial time greedy algorithm for computing satellite-assisted multi-hop entanglement paths. We also design an integer linear programming (ILP)-based algorithm to compute optimal solutions as a baseline to study the performance of our greedy algorithm. We present evaluation results to demonstrate the advantage of our model and algorithms.

A quantum network distributes quantum entanglements between remote nodes, and is key to many applications in secure communication, quantum sensing and distributed quantum computing. This paper explores the fundamental trade-off between the throughput and the quality of entanglement distribution in a multi-hop quantum repeater network. Compared to existing work which aims to heuristically maximize the entanglement distribution rate (EDR) and/or entanglement fidelity, our goal is to characterize the maximum achievable worst-case fidelity, while satisfying a bound on the maximum achievable expected EDR between an arbitrary pair of quantum nodes. This characterization will provide fundamental bounds on the achievable performance region of a quantum network, which can assist with the design of quantum network topology, protocols and applications. However, the task is highly non-trivial and is NP-hard as we shall prove. Our main contribution is a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme to approximate the achievable worst-case fidelity subject to a strict expected EDR bound, combining an optimal fidelity-agnostic EDR-maximizing formulation and a worst-case isotropic noise model. The EDR and fidelity guarantees can be implemented by a post-selection-and-storage protocol with quantum memories. The recent spate of cyber attacks towards Internet of Things (IoT) devices in smart homes calls for effective techniques to understand, characterize, and unveil IoT device activities. In this paper, we present a new system, named IoTAthena, to unveil IoT device activities from raw network traffic consisting of timestamped IP packets. IoTAthena characterizes each IoT device activity using an activity signature consisting of an ordered sequence of IP packets with inter-packet time intervals. IoTAthena has two novel polynomial time algorithms, sigMatch and actExtract. For any given signature, sigMatch can capture all matches of the signature in the raw network traffic. Using sigMatch as a subfunction, actExtract can accurately unveil the sequence of various IoT device activities from the raw network traffic. Using the network traffic of heterogeneous IoT devices collected at the router of a real-world smart home testbed and a public IoT dataset, we demonstrate that IoTAthena is able to characterize and generate activity signatures of IoT device activities and accurately unveil the sequence of IoT device activities from raw network traffic.

Quite a few algorithms have been proposed to optimize the transmission performance of Multipath TCP (MPTCP). However, existing MPTCP protocols are still far from satisfactory in lossy and ever-changing networks because of their loss-based congestion control and the difficulty of managing multiple subflows. Recently, a congestion-based congestion control, BBR, is proposed to promote TCP transmission performance through better use of bandwidth. Due to the superior performance of BBR, we try to boost MPTCP with it. For this propose, coupled congestion control should be redesigned for MPTCP, and a functional scheduler able to effectively make use of the characteristics of BBR must also be developed for better performance. In this paper, we first propose Coupled BBR as a coupled congestion control algorithm for MPTCP to achieve high throughput and stable sending rate in lossy network scenarios with guaranteed fairness with TCP BBR flows and balanced congestion. Then, to further improve the performance, we propose an Adaptively Redundant and Packet-by-Packet (AR\&P) scheduler, which includes two scheduling methods to improve adaptability in highly dynamic network scenarios and keep in-order packet delivery in asymmetric networks. Based on Linux kernel implementation and experiments in both testbed and real network scenarios, we show that the proposed scheme not only provides higher throughput, but also improves robustness and reduces out-of-order packets in some harsh circumstances.

The success of a disaster relief and response process is largely dependent on timely and accurate information regarding the status of the disaster, the surrounding environment, and the affected people. This information is primarily provided by first responders on-site and can be enhanced by the firsthand reports posted in real-time on social media. Many tools and methods have been developed to automate disaster relief by extracting, analyzing, and visualizing actionable information from social media. However, these methods are not well integrated in the relief and response processes and the relation between the two requires exposition for further advancement. Cloud computing has emerged as a powerful and elastic platform for internet service hosting, yet it also draws concerns of the unpredictable performance of cloud-based services due to network congestion. To offer predictable performance, the virtual cluster abstraction of cloud services has been proposed, which enables allocation and performance isolation regarding both computing resources and network bandwidth in a simplified virtual network model. One issue arisen in virtual cluster allocation is the survivability of tenant services against physical failures. Existing works have studied virtual cluster backup provisioning with fixed primary embeddings, but have not considered the impact of primary embeddings on backup resource consumption. To address this issue, in this paper we study how to embed virtual clusters survivably in the cloud data center, by jointly optimizing primary and backup embeddings of the virtual clusters. We formally define the survivable virtual cluster embedding problem. We then propose a novel algorithm, which computes the most resource-efficient embedding given a tenant request. Since the optimal algorithm has high time complexity, we further propose a faster heuristic algorithm, which is several orders faster than the optimal solution, yet able to achieve similar performance. We investigate a type of emerging user-assisted mobile applications or services, referred to as Dynamic Mobile Ad-hoc Crowd Service (DMACS), such as collaborative streaming via smartphones or location privacy protection through a crowd of smartphone users. Such services are provided and consumed by users carrying smart mobile devices (e.g., smartphones) who are in close proximity of each other (e.g., within Bluetooth range). Users in a DMACS system dynamically arrive and depart over time, and are divided into multiple possibly overlapping groups according to radio range constraints. Crucial to the success of such systems is a mechanism that incentivizes users' participation and ensures fair trading. In this paper, we design a multi-market, dynamic double auction mechanism, referred to as M-CHAIN, and show that it is truthful, feasible, individual-rational, no-deficit, and computationally efficient. The novelty and significance of M-CHAIN is that it addresses and solves the fair trading problem in a multi-group or multi-market dynamic double auction problem which naturally occurs in a mobile wireless environment. We demonstrate its efficiency via simulations based on generated user patterns (stochastic arrivals, random market clustering of users) and real-world traces.

Smart grid, regarded as the next generation power grid, uses two-way flows of electricity and information to create a widely distributed automated energy delivery network.
