We prove a robust contraction decomposition theorem for $H$-minor-free graphs, which states that given an $H$-minor-free graph $G$ and an integer $p$, one can partition in polynomial time the vertices of $G$ into $p$ sets $Z_1,\dots,Z_p$ such that $\operatorname{tw}(G/(Z_i \setminus Z')) = O(p + |Z'|)$ for all $i \in [p]$ and $Z' \subseteq Z_i$. Here, $\operatorname{tw}(\cdot)$ denotes the treewidth of a graph and $G/(Z_i \setminus Z')$ denotes the graph obtained from $G$ by contracting all edges with both endpoints in $Z_i \setminus Z'$. Our result generalizes earlier results by Klein [SICOMP 2008] and Demaine et al. [STOC 2011] based on partitioning $E(G)$, and some recent theorems for planar graphs by Marx et al. [SODA 2022], for bounded-genus graphs (more generally, almost-embeddable graphs) by Bandyapadhyay et al. [SODA 2022], and for unit-disk graphs by Bandyapadhyay et al. [SoCG 2022]. The robust contraction decomposition theorem directly results in parameterized algorithms with running time $2^{\widetilde{O}(\sqrt{k})} \cdot n^{O(1)}$ or $n^{O(\sqrt{k})}$ for every vertex/edge deletion problems on $H$-minor-free graphs that can be formulated as Permutation CSP Deletion or 2-Conn Permutation CSP Deletion. Consequently, we obtain the first subexponential-time parameterized algorithms for Subset Feedback Vertex Set, Subset Odd Cycle Transversal, Subset Group Feedback Vertex Set, 2-Conn Component Order Connectivity on $H$-minor-free graphs. For other problems which already have subexponential-time parameterized algorithms on $H$-minor-free graphs (e.g., Odd Cycle Transversal, Vertex Multiway Cut, Vertex Multicut, etc.), our theorem gives much simpler algorithms of the same running time., Comment: 50 pages, 2 figures

The \textsc{Capacitated $d$-Hitting Set} problem involves a universe $U$ with a capacity function $\mathsf{cap}: U \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ and a collection $\mathcal{A}$ of subsets of $U$, each of size at most $d$. The goal is to find a minimum subset $S \subseteq U$ and an assignment $\phi : \mathcal{A} \rightarrow S$ such that for every $A \in \mathcal{A}$, $\phi(A) \in A$, and for each $x \in U$, $|\phi^{-1}(x)| \leq \mathsf{cap}(x)$. For $d=2$, this is known as \textsc{Capacitated Vertex Cover}. In the weighted variant, each element of $U$ has a positive integer weight, with the objective of finding a minimum-weight capacitated hitting set. Chuzhoy and Naor [SICOMP 2006] provided a factor-3 approximation for \textsc{Capacitated Vertex Cover} and showed that the weighted case lacks an $o(\log n)$-approximation unless $P=NP$. Kao and Wong [SODA 2017] later independently achieved a $d$-approximation for \textsc{Capacitated $d$-Hitting Set}, with no $d - \epsilon$ improvements possible under the Unique Games Conjecture. Our main result is a parameterized approximation algorithm with runtime $\left(\frac{k}{\epsilon}\right)^k 2^{k^{O(kd)}}(|U|+|\mathcal{A}|)^{O(1)}$ that either concludes no solution of size $\leq k$ exists or finds $S$ of size $\leq 4/3 \cdot k$ and weight at most $2+\epsilon$ times the minimum weight for solutions of size $\leq k$. We further show that no FPT-approximation with factor $c > 1$ exists for unweighted \textsc{Capacitated $d$-Hitting Set} with $d \geq 3$, nor with factor $2 - \epsilon$ for the weighted version, assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis. These results extend to \textsc{Capacitated Vertex Cover} in multigraphs. We give two new approximation algorithms to compute the fractional hypertree width of an input hypergraph. The first algorithm takes as input $n$-vertex $m$-edge hypergraph $H$ of fractional hypertree width at most $\omega$, runs in polynomial time and produces a tree decomposition of $H$ of fractional hypertree width $O(\omega \log n \log \omega)$. As an immediate corollary this yields polynomial time $O(\log^2 n \log \omega)$-approximation algorithms for (generalized) hypertree width as well. To the best of our knowledge our algorithm is the first non-trivial polynomial-time approximation algorithm for fractional hypertree width and (generalized) hypertree width, as opposed to algorithms that run in polynomial time only when $\omega$ is considered a constant. For hypergraphs with the bounded intersection property we get better bounds, comparable with that recent algorithm of Lanzinger and Razgon [STACS 2024]. The second algorithm runs in time $n^{\omega}m^{O(1)}$ and produces a tree decomposition of $H$ of fractional hypertree width $O(\omega \log^2 \omega)$. This significantly improves over the $(n+m)^{O(\omega^3)}$ time algorithm of Marx [ACM TALG 2010], which produces a tree decomposition of fractional hypertree width $O(\omega^3)$, both in terms of running time and the approximation ratio. Our main technical contribution, and the key insight behind both algorithms, is a variant of the classic Menger's Theorem for clique separators in graphs: For every graph $G$, vertex sets $A$ and $B$, family ${\cal F}$ of cliques in $G$, and positive rational $f$, either there exists a sub-family of $O(f \cdot \log^2 n)$ cliques in ${\cal F}$ whose union separates $A$ from $B$, or there exist $f \cdot \log |{\cal F}|$ paths from $A$ to $B$ such that no clique in ${\cal F}$ intersects more than $\log |{\cal F}|$ paths., Comment: 28 pages, 1 figure, preliminary version accepted at FOCS 2024

For a finite set $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs, the $\mathcal{F}$-Hitting problem aims to compute, for a given graph $G$ (taken from some graph class $\mathcal{G}$) of $n$ vertices (and $m$ edges) and a parameter $k\in\mathbb{N}$, a set $S$ of vertices in $G$ such that $|S|\leq k$ and $G-S$ does not contain any subgraph isomorphic to a graph in $\mathcal{F}$. As a generic problem, $\mathcal{F}$-Hitting subsumes many fundamental vertex-deletion problems that are well-studied in the literature. The $\mathcal{F}$-Hitting problem admits a simple branching algorithm with running time $2^{O(k)}\cdot n^{O(1)}$, while it cannot be solved in $2^{o(k)}\cdot n^{O(1)}$ time on general graphs assuming the ETH. In this paper, we establish a general framework to design subexponential parameterized algorithms for the $\mathcal{F}$-Hitting problem on a broad family of graph classes. Specifically, our framework yields algorithms that solve $\mathcal{F}$-Hitting with running time $2^{O(k^c)}\cdot n+O(m)$ for a constant $c<1$ on any graph class $\mathcal{G}$ that admits balanced separators whose size is (strongly) sublinear in the number of vertices and polynomial in the size of a maximum clique. Examples include all graph classes of polynomial expansion and many important classes of geometric intersection graphs. Our algorithms also apply to the \textit{weighted} version of $\mathcal{F}$-Hitting, where each vertex of $G$ has a weight and the goal is to compute the set $S$ with a minimum weight that satisfies the desired conditions. The core of our framework is an intricate subexponential branching algorithm that reduces an instance of $\mathcal{F}$-Hitting (on the aforementioned graph classes) to $2^{O(k^c)}$ general hitting-set instances, where the Gaifman graph of each instance has treewidth $O(k^c)$, for some constant $c<1$ depending on $\mathcal{F}$ and the graph class.

In this paper, we introduce the third party to achieve the Stackelberg equilibrium with the time inconsistency in three different Stackelberg games, which are the discrete-time games, the dynamic games, and the mean field games. Here all followers are experiencing learning-by-doing. The role of a third party is similar to industry associations, they supervise the leader's implementation and impose penalties for the defection with the discount factor. Then we obtain different forms of discount factors in different models and effective conditions to prevent defection.These results are consistent and the third party intervention is effective and maneuverable in practice.

In a disk graph, every vertex corresponds to a disk in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and two vertices are connected by an edge whenever the two corresponding disks intersect. Disk graphs form an important class of geometric intersection graphs, which generalizes both planar graphs and unit-disk graphs. We study a fundamental optimization problem in algorithmic graph theory, Bipartization (also known as Odd Cycle Transversal), on the class of disk graphs. The goal of Bipartization is to delete a minimum number of vertices from the input graph such that the resulting graph is bipartite. A folklore (polynomial-time) $3$-approximation algorithm for Bipartization on disk graphs follows from the classical framework of Goemans and Williamson [Combinatorica'98] for cycle-hitting problems. For over two decades, this result has remained the best known approximation for the problem (in fact, even for Bipartization on unit-disk graphs). In this paper, we achieve the first improvement upon this result, by giving a $(3-\alpha)$-approximation algorithm for Bipartization on disk graphs, for some constant $\alpha>0$. Our algorithm directly generalizes to the broader class of pseudo-disk graphs. An outerstring graph is the intersection graph of curves lying inside a disk with one endpoint on the boundary of the disk. We show that an outerstring graph with $n$ vertices has treewidth $O(\alpha\log n)$, where $\alpha$ denotes the arboricity of the graph, with an almost matching lower bound of $\Omega(\alpha \log (n/\alpha))$. As a corollary, we show that a $t$-biclique-free outerstring graph has treewidth $O(t(\log t)\log n)$. This leads to polynomial-time algorithms for most of the central NP-complete problems such as \textsc{Independent Set}, \textsc{Vertex Cover}, \textsc{Dominating Set}, \textsc{Feedback Vertex Set}, \textsc{Coloring} for sparse outerstring graphs. Lead-free halide double perovskites provide a promising solution for the long-standing issues of lead-containing halide perovskites, i.e., the toxicity of Pb and the low stability under ambient conditions and high-intensity illumination. Their light-to-electricity or thermal-to-electricity conversion is strongly determined by the dynamics of the corresponding lattice vibrations. Here, we present the measurement of lattice dynamics in a prototypical lead-free halide double perovskite, i.e., Cs2NaInCl6. Our quantitative measurements and first-principles calculations show that the scatterings among lattice vibrations at room temperature are at the timescale of ~ 1 ps, which stems from the extraordinarily strong anharmonicity in Cs2NaInCl6. We further quantitatively characterize the degree of anharmonicity of all the ions in the single Cs2NaInCl6 crystal, and demonstrate that this strong anharmonicity is synergistically contributed by the bond hierarchy, the tilting of the NaCl6 and InCl6 octahedral units, and the rattling of Cs+ ions. Consequently, the crystalline Cs2NaInCl6 possesses an ultralow thermal conductivity of ~0.43 W/mK at room temperature, and a weak temperature dependence of T-0.41. Our findings here uncovered the underlying mechanisms behind the dynamics of lattice vibrations in double perovskites, which could largely benefit the design of optoelectronics and thermoelectrics based on halide double perovskites.

Let $X$ be a set of points in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $\mathcal{O}$ be a set of geometric objects in $\mathbb{R}^2$, where $|X| + |\mathcal{O}| = n$. We study the problem of computing a minimum subset $\mathcal{O}^* \subseteq \mathcal{O}$ that encloses all points in $X$. Here a point $x \in X$ is enclosed by $\mathcal{O}^*$ if it lies in a bounded connected component of $\mathbb{R}^2 \backslash (\bigcup_{O \in \mathcal{O}^*} O)$. We propose two algorithmic frameworks to design polynomial-time approximation algorithms for the problem. The first framework is based on sparsification and min-cut, which results in $O(1)$-approximation algorithms for unit disks, unit squares, etc. The second framework is based on LP rounding, which results in an $O(\alpha(n)\log n)$-approximation algorithm for segments, where $\alpha(n)$ is the inverse Ackermann function, and an $O(\log n)$-approximation algorithm for disks., Comment: In SoCG'24

Geometric matching is an important topic in computational geometry and has been extensively studied over decades. In this paper, we study a geometric-matching problem, known as geometric many-to-many matching. In this problem, the input is a set $S$ of $n$ colored points in $\mathbb{R}^d$, which implicitly defines a graph $G = (S,E(S))$ where $E(S) = \{(p,q): p,q \in S \text{ have different colors}\}$, and the goal is to compute a minimum-cost subset $E^* \subseteq E(S)$ of edges that cover all points in $S$. Here the cost of $E^*$ is the sum of the costs of all edges in $E^*$, where the cost of a single edge $e$ is the Euclidean distance (or more generally, the $L_p$-distance) between the two endpoints of $e$. Our main result is a $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm with an optimal running time $O_\varepsilon(n \log n)$ for geometric many-to-many matching in any fixed dimension, which works under any $L_p$-norm. This is the first near-linear approximation scheme for the problem in any $d \geq 2$. Prior to this work, only the bipartite case of geometric many-to-many matching was considered in $\mathbb{R}^1$ and $\mathbb{R}^2$, and the best known approximation scheme in $\mathbb{R}^2$ takes $O_\varepsilon(n^{1.5} \cdot \mathsf{poly}(\log n))$ time., Comment: In SoCG'24

The recent discovery of possible high temperature superconductivity in single crystals of $La_3Ni_2O_7$ under pressure renews the interest in research on nickelates. The DFT calculations reveal that both $d_{z^2}$ and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals are active, which suggests a minimal two-orbital model to capture the low-energy physics of this system. In this work, we study a bilayer two-orbital $t-J$ model within multiband Gutzwiller approximation, and discuss the magnetism as well as the superconductivity over a wide range of the hole doping. Owing to the inter-orbital super-exchange process between $d_{z^2}$ and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals, the induced ferromagnetic coupling within layers competes with the conventional antiferromagnetic coupling, and leads to complicated hole doping dependence for the magnetic properties in the system. With increasing hole doping, the system transfers to A-AFM state from the starting G-AFM state. We also find the inter-layer superconducting pairing of $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals dominates due to the large hopping parameter of $d_{z^2}$ along the vertical inter-layer bonds and significant Hund's coupling between $d_{z^2}$ and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals. Meanwhile, the G-AFM state and superconductivity state can coexist in the low hole doping regime. In the Euclidean Bottleneck Steiner Tree problem, the input consists of a set of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^2$ called terminals and a parameter $k$, and the goal is to compute a Steiner tree that spans all the terminals and contains at most $k$ points of $\mathbb{R}^2$ as Steiner points such that the maximum edge-length of the Steiner tree is minimized, where the length of a tree edge is the Euclidean distance between its two endpoints. The problem is well-studied and is known to be NP-hard. In this paper, we give a $k^{O(k)} n^{O(1)}$-time algorithm for Euclidean Bottleneck Steiner Tree, which implies that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT). This settles an open question explicitly asked by Bae et al. [Algorithmica, 2011], who showed that the $\ell_1$ and $\ell_{\infty}$ variants of the problem are FPT. In this paper, we consider a class of infinitely degenerate partial differential systems to obtain the Nash equilibria in the mean field games. The degeneracy in the diffusion and the Hamiltonian may be different. This feature brings difficulties to the uniform boundness of the solutions, which is central to the existence and regularity results. First, from the perspective of the value function in the stochastic optimal control problems, we prove the Lipschitz continuity and the semiconcavity for the solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations (HJE). Then the existence of the weak solutions for the degenerate systems is obtained via a vanishing viscosity method. Furthermore, by constructing an auxiliary function, we conclude the regularity of the viscosity solution for the HJE in the almost everywhere sense.

In this paper, we study a class of degenerate mean field game systems arising from the mean field games with H\"ormander diffusion, where the generic player may have a ``forbidden'' direction at some point. Here we prove the existence and uniqueness of the classical solutions in weighted H\"older spaces for the PDE systems, which describe the Nash equilibria in the games. The degeneracy causes the lack of commutation of vector fields and the fundamental solution which are the main difficulties in the proof of the global Schauder estimate and the weak maximum principle. Based on the idea of the localizing technique and the local homogeneity of degenerate operators, we extend the maximum regularity result and obtain the global Schauder estimates. In the committee selection problem, the goal is to choose a subset of size $k$ from a set of candidates $C$ that collectively gives the best representation to a set of voters. We consider this problem in Euclidean $d$-space where each voter/candidate is a point and voters' preferences are implicitly represented by Euclidean distances to candidates. We explore fault-tolerance in committee selection and study the following three variants: (1) given a committee and a set of $f$ failing candidates, find their optimal replacement; (2) compute the worst-case replacement score for a given committee under failure of $f$ candidates; and (3) design a committee with the best replacement score under worst-case failures. The score of a committee is determined using the well-known (min-max) Chamberlin-Courant rule: minimize the maximum distance between any voter and its closest candidate in the committee. Our main results include the following: (1) in one dimension, all three problems can be solved in polynomial time; (2) in dimension $d \geq 2$, all three problems are NP-hard; and (3) all three problems admit a constant-factor approximation in any fixed dimension, and the optimal committee problem has an FPT bicriterion approximation., Comment: The paper will appear in the proceedings of ESA 2023

We revisit a natural variant of geometric set cover, called minimum-membership geometric set cover (MMGSC). In this problem, the input consists of a set $S$ of points and a set $\mathcal{R}$ of geometric objects, and the goal is to find a subset $\mathcal{R}^*\subseteq\mathcal{R}$ to cover all points in $S$ such that the \textit{membership} of $S$ with respect to $\mathcal{R}^*$, denoted by $\mathsf{memb}(S,\mathcal{R}^*)$, is minimized, where $\mathsf{memb}(S,\mathcal{R}^*)=\max_{p\in S}|\{R\in\mathcal{R}^*: p\in R\}|$. We achieve the following two main results. * We give the first polynomial-time constant-approximation algorithm for MMGSC with unit squares. This answers a question left open since the work of Erlebach and Leeuwen [SODA'08], who gave a constant-approximation algorithm with running time $n^{O(\mathsf{opt})}$ where $\mathsf{opt}$ is the optimum of the problem (i.e., the minimum membership). * We give the first polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS) for MMGSC with halfplanes. Prior to this work, it was even unknown whether the problem can be approximated with a factor of $o(\log n)$ in polynomial time, while it is well-known that the minimum-size set cover problem with halfplanes can be solved in polynomial time. We also consider a problem closely related to MMGSC, called minimum-ply geometric set cover (MPGSC), in which the goal is to find $\mathcal{R}^*\subseteq\mathcal{R}$ to cover $S$ such that the ply of $\mathcal{R}^*$ is minimized, where the ply is defined as the maximum number of objects in $\mathcal{R}^*$ which have a nonempty common intersection. Very recently, Durocher et al. gave the first constant-approximation algorithm for MPGSC with unit squares which runs in $O(n^{12})$ time. We investigate a fundamental vertex-deletion problem called (Induced) Subgraph Hitting: given a graph $G$ and a set $\mathcal{F}$ of forbidden graphs, the goal is to compute a minimum-sized set $S$ of vertices of $G$ such that $G-S$ does not contain any graph in $\mathcal{F}$ as an (induced) subgraph. This is a generic problem that encompasses many well-known problems that were extensively studied on their own, particularly (but not only) from the perspectives of both approximation and parameterization. In this paper, we study the approximability of the problem on a large variety of graph classes. Our first result is a linear-time $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximation reduction from (Induced) Subgraph Hitting on any graph class $\mathcal{G}$ of bounded expansion to the same problem on bounded degree graphs within $\mathcal{G}$. This directly yields linear-size $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximation lossy kernels for the problems on any bounded-expansion graph classes. Our second result is a linear-time approximation scheme for (Induced) Subgraph Hitting on any graph class $\mathcal{G}$ of polynomial expansion, based on the local-search framework of Har-Peled and Quanrud [SICOMP 2017]. This approximation scheme can be applied to a more general family of problems that aim to hit all subgraphs satisfying a certain property $\pi$ that is efficiently testable and has bounded diameter.
