Search

Blazars are often observed to flare across multiple wavelengths. Orphan flares from blazars have been only detected a few times, providing an opportunity to understand the structure of the jet in the accreting system. We report a remarkable orphan X-ray flare from a blazar candidate EP240709a, detected by Einstein Probe (EP) in July 2024. The multi-band spectral properties and variability support EP240709a as a high-energy peaked BL Lacertae-type object. The flux in 0.5-10 keV increases by at least 28 times to the value of low state in 2020, with non-detection of remarkable flaring in other bands during the same period. EP240709a exhibits the harder-when-brighter tendency in the X-ray band during the orphan flare, while its infrared-optical spectra are featureless. We employ one-zone and two-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton models to perform the spectral energy distribution fitting. Detecting this rare orphan flare shows the potential of EP in discovering peculiar activities from AGN in high-cadence X-ray sky surveys., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJ

We report the discovery of a peculiar X-ray transient, EP240408a, by Einstein Probe (EP) and follow-up studies made with EP, Swift, NICER, GROND, ATCA and other ground-based multi-wavelength telescopes. The new transient was first detected with Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board EP on April 8th, 2024, manifested in an intense yet brief X-ray flare lasting for 12 seconds. The flare reached a peak flux of 3.9x10^(-9) erg/cm2/s in 0.5-4 keV, about 300 times brighter than the underlying X-ray emission detected throughout the observation. Rapid and more precise follow-up observations by EP/FXT, Swift and NICER confirmed the finding of this new transient. Its X-ray spectrum is non-thermal in 0.5-10 keV, with a power-law photon index varying within 1.8-2.5. The X-ray light curve shows a plateau lasting for about 4 days, followed by a steep decay till becoming undetectable about 10 days after the initial detection. Based on its temporal property and constraints from previous EP observations, an unusual timescale in the range of 7-23 days is found for EP240408a, which is intermediate between the commonly found fast and long-term transients. No counterparts have been found in optical and near-infrared, with the earliest observation at 17 hours after the initial X-ray detection, suggestive of intrinsically weak emission in these bands. We demonstrate that the remarkable properties of EP240408a are inconsistent with any of the transient types known so far, by comparison with, in particular, jetted tidal disruption events, gamma-ray bursts, X-ray binaries and fast blue optical transients. The nature of EP240408a thus remains an enigma. We suggest that EP240408a may represent a new type of transients with intermediate timescales of the order of about 10 days. Neutral hydrogen (HI) is the primary component of the cool interstellar medium (ISM) and is the reservoir of fuel for star formation. Owing to the sensitivity of existing radio telescopes, our understanding of the evolution of the ISM in galaxies remains limited, as it is based on only a few hundred galaxies detected in HI beyond the local Universe. With the high sensitivity of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), we carried out a blind HI search, the FAST Ultra-Deep Survey (FUDS), which extends to redshifts up to 0.42 and a sensitivity of 50 $\rm \mu Jy \cdot beam^{-1}$. Here, we report the first discovery of six galaxies in HI at $z>0.38$. For these galaxies, the FAST angular resolution of $\sim\,4'$ corresponds to a mean linear size of $\sim1.3\,h_{70}^{-1}\,$Mpc. These galaxies are among the most distant HI emission detections known, with one having the most massive HI content ($10^{10.93 \pm 0.04}~h_{70}^{-2}\, \rm M_\odot$). Using recent data from the DESI survey, and new observations with the Hale, BTA, and Keck telescopes, optical counterparts are detected for all galaxies within the 3-$\sigma$ positional uncertainty ($0.5\,h_{70}^{-1}\,$Mpc) and $\rm 200\,km \cdot s^{-1}$ in recession velocity. Assuming that the dominant source of HI is the identified optical counterpart, we find an evidence of evolution in the HI content of galaxies over the last 4.2 Gyr. Our new high-redshift HI galaxy sample provides the opportunity to better investigate the evolution of cool gas in galaxies. In this study, we present the construction of a new proper motion catalog utilizing the photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) imaging surveys, with a median time baseline of about 13 years. To mitigate systematic errors, the DESI galaxy positions are employed to establish a reference frame and to correct the position-, magnitude-, and color-dependent discrepancies between SDSS and DESI imaging datasets. Spanning 12,589 square degrees, the catalog encompasses about 206.6 million non-Gaia objects down to $m_r \sim$ 23. Based on 734k quasars, the assessment of the global systematic errors in DESI-SDSS proper motion catalog yields values of 0.14 mas yr$^{-1}$ for $\mu_{\alpha *}$ and 0.11 mas yr$^{-1}$ for $\mu_{\delta}$. The catalog exhibits a precision surpassing 3.7 mas yr$^{-1}$, albeit varying with position, color, and magnitude. An additional evaluation employing approximately 5,300 distant star samples yields an overall precision of approximately 3.0 and 2.9 mas yr$^{-1}$ for $\mu_{\alpha *}$ and $\mu_{\delta}$, respectively. Further comparisons with proper motions from SDSS Stripe 82 reveal a strong consistency between the two datasets. As a practical application, we utilize fainter non-Gaia objects in our catalog to update the proper motions of 17 star clusters. The resulting proper motions for these clusters exhibit excellent consistency with those derived from Gaia data. Our proper motion measurements, characterized by a deeper limiting magnitude, stands as a valuable complement to the Gaia dataset. Green pea galaxies are a special class of star-forming compact galaxies with strong [O III]{\lambda}5007 and considered as analogs of high-redshift Ly{\alpha}-emitting galaxies and potential sources for cosmic reionization. In this paper, we identify 76 strong [O III]{\lambda}5007 compact galaxies at z < 0.35 from DR1613 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These galaxies present relatively low stellar mass, high star formation rate, and low metallicity. Both star-forming main sequence relation (SFMS) and mass-metallicity relation (MZR) are investigated and compared with green pea and blueberry galaxies collected from literature. It is found that our strong [O III] {\lambda}5007 compact galaxies share common properties with those compact galaxies with extreme star formation and show distinct scaling relations in respect to those of normal star-forming galaxies at the same redshift. The slope of SFMS is higher, indicates that strong [O III]{\lambda}5007 compact galaxies might grow faster in stellar mass. The lower MZR implies that they may be less chemically evolved and hence on the early stage of star formation. A further environmental investigation confirms that they inhabit relatively low-density regions. We have conducted photometric and spectroscopic observations of the peculiar Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2016ije that was discovered through the Tsinghua-NAOC Transient Survey. This peculiar object exploded in the outskirts of a metal-poor, low-surface brightness galaxy (i.e., $M_{g}$ = $-$14.5 mag). Our photometric analysis reveals that SN 2016ije is subluminous ($M_{B,\rm{max}}$ = $-$17.65$\pm$0.06 mag) but exhibits relatively broad light curves (${\Delta}m_{15}(B)$ = 1.35$\pm$0.14 mag), similar to the behavior of SN 2002es. Our analysis of the bolometric light curve indicates that only 0.14$\pm$0.04 $M_{\odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni was synthesized in the explosion of SN 2016ije, which suggests a less energetic thermonuclear explosion when compared to normal SNe Ia, and this left a considerable amount of unburned materials in the ejecta. Spectroscopically, SN 2016ije resembles other SN 2002es-like SNe Ia, except that the ejecta velocity inferred from its carbon absorption line ($\sim$ 4500 km s$^{-1}$) is much lower than that from silicon lines ($\sim$ 8300 km s$^{-1}$) at around the maximum light. Additionally, most of the absorption lines are broader than other 02es-like SNe Ia. These peculiarities suggest the presence of significant unburned carbon in the inner region and a wide line-forming region along the line of sight. These characteristics suggest that SN 2016ije might originate from the violent merger of a white dwarf binary system, when viewed near an orientation along the iron-group-element cavity caused by the companion star., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures

In this third paper of the series reporting on the reverberation mapping (RM) campaign of active galactic nuclei with asymmetric H$\beta$ emission-line profiles, we present results for 15 Palomar-Green (PG) quasars using spectra obtained between the end of 2016 to May 2021. This campaign combines long time spans with relatively high cadence. For 8 objects, both the time lags obtained from the entire light curves and the measurements from individual observing seasons are provided. Reverberation mapping of 9 of our targets has been attempted for the first time, while the results for 6 others can be compared with previous campaigns. We measure the H$\beta$ time lags over periods of years and estimate their black hole masses. The long duration of the campaign enables us to investigate their broad line region (BLR) geometry and kinematics for different years by using velocity-resolved lags, which demonstrate signatures of diverse BLR geometry and kinematics. The BLR geometry and kinematics of individual objects are discussed. Photometric redshift (photo-z) is a fundamental parameter for multi-wavelength photometric surveys, while galaxy clusters are important cosmological probers and ideal objects for exploring the dense environmental impact on galaxy evolution. We extend our previous work on estimating photo-z and detecting galaxy clusters to the latest data releases of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) imaging surveys, Dark Energy Survey (DES), and Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) imaging surveys and make corresponding catalogs publicly available for more extensive scientific applications. The photo-z catalogs include accurate measurements of photo-z and stellar mass for about 320, 293, and 134 million galaxies with $r<23$, $i<24$, and $i<25$ in DESI DR9, DES DR2, and HSC-SSP PDR3 data, respectively. The photo-z accuracy is about 0.017, 0.024, and 0.029 and the general redshift coverage is $z<1$, $z<1.2$, and $z<1.6$, respectively for those three surveys. The uncertainties of the logarithmic stellar mass that is inferred from stellar population synthesis fitting is about 0.2 dex. With the above photo-z catalogs, galaxy clusters are detected using a fast cluster-finding algorithm. A total of 532,810, 86,963, and 36,566 galaxy clusters with the number of members larger than 10 are discovered for DESI, DES, and HSC-SSP, respectively. Their photo-z accuracy is at the level of 0.01. The total mass of our clusters are also estimated by using the calibration relations between the optical richness and the mass measurement from X-ray and radio observations. In this paper, we present photometric and spectroscopic observations of a subluminous type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2012ij, which has an absolute $B$-band peak magnitude $M_{B,\rm{max}}$ = $-$17.95 $\pm$ 0.15 mag. The $B$-band light curve exhibits a fast post-peak decline with $\Delta m_{15}(B)$ = 1.86 $\pm$ 0.05 mag. All the $R$ and $I$/$i$-band light curves show a weak secondary peak/shoulder feature at about 3 weeks after the peak, like some transitional subclass of SNe Ia, which could result from an incomplete merger of near-infrared (NIR) double peaks. The spectra are characterized by Ti~{\sc ii} and strong Si~{\sc ii} $\lambda$5972 absorption features that are usually seen in low-luminosity objects like SN 1999by. The NIR spectrum before maximum light reveals weak carbon absorption features, implying the existence of unburned materials. We compare the observed properties of SN 2012ij with those predicted by the sub-Chandrasekhar-mass and the Chandrasekhar-mass delayed-detonation models, and find that both optical and NIR spectral properties can be explained to some extent by these two models. By comparing the secondary maximum features in $I$ and $i$ bands, we suggest that SN 2012ij is a transitional object linking normal SNe Ia to typical 91bg-like ones. From the published sample of SNe Ia from the $Carnegie~Supernova~Project~II$ (CSP-II), we estimate that the fraction of SN 2012ij-like SNe Ia is not lower than $\sim$ 2%.

In the past few years, Chinese astronomical community is actively testing astronomical sites for several new optical/infrared ground-based telescopes. These site testing campaigns conducted were mainly focused on fundamental performances of the site, such as cloud coverage, seeing, temperature, etc. With increasing interests in sodium laser guide star adaptive optics for these new telescopes in the Chinese astronomical community, it is interesting to investigate the performance of the laser guide star at these sites, especially considering that the sodium laser guide star's on-sky performance is significantly influenced by sites' local performances, such as geomagnetic field, sodium layer dynamics, density of air molecule, etc. In this paper, we studied sodium laser guide star's performance of a 20W class Quasi-CW pulsed laser developed by TIPC with numerical simulation for five selected sites in China.

Based on the photometric redshift catalog of Zou H. et al. (2019), we apply a fast clustering algorithm to identify 540,432 galaxy clusters at $z\lesssim1$ in the DESI legacy imaging surveys, which cover a sky area of about 20,000 deg$^2$. Monte-Carlo simulations indicate that the false detection rate of our detecting method is about 3.1\%. The total masses of galaxy clusters are derived using a calibrated richness--mass relation that are based on the observations of X-ray emission and Sunyaev \& Zel'dovich effect. The median redshift and mass of our detected clusters are about 0.53 and $1.23\times10^{14} M_\odot$, respectively. Comparing with previous clusters identified using the data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we can recognize most of them, especially those with high richness. The legacy imaging surveys for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument project provides multiplecolor photometric data, which are about 2 mag deeper than the SDSS. In this study, we redetermine the fundamental properties for an old halo globular cluster of Palomar 5 based on these new imaging data, including structure parameters, stellar population parameters, and luminosity and mass functions. These characteristics, together with its tidal tails, are key for dynamical studies of the cluster and constraining the mass model of the Milky Way. By fitting the King model to the radial surface density profile of Palomar 5, we derive the core radius of $r_c$ = 2.96' $\pm$ 0.11', tidal radius of $r_t$ = 17.99' $\pm$ 1.49', and concentration parameter of $c$ = 0.78 $\pm$ 0.04. We apply a Bayesian analysis method to derive the stellar population properties and get an age of 11.508 $\pm$ 0.027 Gyr, metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.798 $\pm$ 0.014, reddening of $E(B-V)$ = 0.0552 $\pm$ 0.0005, and distance modulus of $(m-M)_0$ = 16.835 $\pm$ 0.006. The main-sequence luminosity and mass functions for both the cluster center, and tidal tails are investigated. The luminosity and mass functions at different distances from the cluster center suggest that there is obvious spatial mass segregation. Many faint low-mass stars have been evaporated at the cluster center and the tidal tails are enhanced by low-mass stars. Both the concentration and relaxation times suggest that Palomar 5 is a totally relaxed system.

The strength and vertical distribution of atmospheric turbulence is a key factor determining the performance of optical and infrared telescopes, with and without adaptive optics. Yet, this remains challenging to measure. We describe a new technique using a sequence of short-exposure images of a star field, obtained with a small telescope. Differential motion between all pairs of star images is used to compute the structure functions of longitudinal and transverse wavefront tilt for a range of angular separations. These are compared with theoretical predictions of simple turbulence models by means of a Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo optimization. The method is able to estimate the turbulence profile in the lower atmosphere, the total and free-atmosphere seeing, and the outer scale. We present results of Monte-Carlo simulations used to verify the technique, and show some examples using data from the second AST3 telescope at Dome A in Antarctica.

The location of an astronomical observatory is a key factor that affects its scientific productivity. The best astronomical sites are generally those found at high altitudes. Several such sites in western China and the Tibetan plateau are presently under development for astronomy. One of these is Ali, which at over 5000 m is one of the highest astronomical sites in the world. In order to further investigate the astronomical potential of Ali, we have installed a lunar scintillometer, for the primary purpose of profiling atmospheric turbulence. This paper describes the instrument and technique, and reports results from the first year of observations. We find that ground layer (GL) turbulence at Ali is remarkably weak and relatively thin. The median seeing, from turbulence in the range 11- 500 m above ground is 0.34 arcsec, with seeing better than 0.26 arcsec occurring 25 per cent of the time. Under median conditions, half of the GL turbulence lies below a height of 62 m. These initial results, and the high altitude and relatively low temperatures, suggest that Ali could prove to be an outstanding site for ground-based astronomy.

Large telescope's adaptive optics (AO) system requires one or several bright artificial laser guide stars to improve its sky coverage. The recent advent of high power sodium laser is perfect for such application. However, besides the output power, other parameters of the laser also have significant impact on the brightness of the generated sodium laser guide star mostly in non-linear relationships. When tuning and optimizing these parameters it is necessary to tune based on a laser guide star generation performance metric. Although return photon flux is widely used, variability of atmosphere and sodium layer make it difficult to compare from site to site even within short time period for the same site. A new metric, coupling efficiency is adopted in our field tests. In this paper, we will introduce our method for measuring the coupling efficiency of a 20W class pulse sodium laser for AO application during field tests that were conducted during 2013-2015.

We present Chandra X-ray observations of galaxy cluster A168 (z=0.045). Two X-ray peaks with a projected distance of 676 kpc are found to be located close to two dominant galaxies, respectively. Both peaks are significantly offset from the peak of the number density distribution of galaxies. This suggests that A168 consists of two subclusters, a northern subcluster (A168N) and a southern subcluster (A168S). Further X-ray imaging analysis reveals that (1) the X-ray isophotes surrounding the two X-ray peaks are heavily distorted, (2) an elongated and ontinuous filament connects the two X-ray peaks. These suggest that strong interactions have occurred between the two subclusters. Spectral analysis shows that A168 has a mean temperature of 2.53 +/- 0.09 keV and a mean metallicity of 0.31 +/- 0.04 Z_{solar}. The metallicity is roughly a constant across the cluster but the temperature shows some systematic variations. Most X-ray, optical and radio properties of A168 are consistent with it being an off-axis merger several Gyrs after a core passage, although detailed numerical simulations are required to see whether the observed properties, in particular the significant offset between the optical and X-ray centers, can be reproduced in such a scenario., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, to be published in ApJ. We present optical candidates for 75 X-ray sources in a $\sim 1$ deg$^2$ overlapping region with the medium deep ROSAT survey. These candidates are selected using the multi-color CCD imaging observations made for the T329 field of the Beijing-Arizona-Taipei-Connecticut (BATC) Sky Survey. These X-ray sources are relatively faint (CR $<< 0.2 s^{-1}$) and thus mostly are not included in the RBS catalog, they also remain as X-ray sources without optical candidates in a previous identification program carried out by the Hamburg Quasar Survey. Within their position-error circles, almost all the X-ray sources are observed to have one or more spatially associated optical candidates within them down to the magnitude $m_V \sim 23.1$. We have classified 149 of 156 detected optical candidates with 73 of the 75 X-ray sources with a SED-based Object Classification Approach (SOCA). These optical candidates include: 31 QSOs, 39 stars, 37 starburst galaxies, 42 galaxies, and 7 "just" visible objects. We have also cross-correlated the positions of these optical objects with NED, the FIRST radio source catalog and the 2MASS catalog. Separately, we have also SED-classified the remaining 6011 objects in our field of view. Optical objects are found at the $6.5\sigma$ level above what one would expect from a random distribution, only QSOs are over-represented in these error circles at greater than 4$\sigma$ frequency. We estimate redshifts for all extragalactic objects, and find a good correspondence of our predicted redshift with the measured redshift (a mean error of 0.04 in $\Delta z$. This paper is the fourth in a series presenting spectrophotometry of 51 globular cluster candidates, that were detected by Mochejska et al. in the nearby galaxy M33 using the data collected by the DIRECT project. The frames of M33 in this study were taken as part of the BATC Multicolor Sky Survey. We obtained the spectral energy distributions of these candidates in 13 intermediate-band filters. By comparing the integrated photometric measurements with theoretical stellar population synthesis models of Bruzual & Charlot, we estimated their ages. The BC96 models provide the evolution in time of the spectrophotometric properties of simple stellar populations for a wide range of stellar metallicity. Our results show that half of the candidates are younger than 10^8 years, whose age degeneracy is not pronounced. We also find that globular clusters formed continuously in M33 from ~4*10^6 -- 10^{10} years. Our results are in agreement with Chandar et al., who estimated ages for 35 globular clusters candidates in common by comparing the photometric measurements to integrated colors from theoretical models by Bertelli et al. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test shows that the maximum value of the absolute difference of estimated ages between Chandar et al. and us is 0.48, and the significance level probability is 100.00 per cent., Comment: 20 pages, has been accepted for publication to Acta Astronomica in Poland

In this paper, we present the methodology of photometric redshift determination with the BATC 15-color system by using hyperz program. Both simulated galaxies and real galaxies with known redshifts were used to estimate the accuracy of redshifts inferred from the multicolor photometry. From the test with simulated galaxies, the uncertainty in the inferred redshifts is about $0.02\sim0.03$ for a given range of photometric uncertainty of $0.05 \sim 0.10$. The results with the 27 real galaxies are in good agreement with the simulated ones. The advantage of using BATC intermediate-band system to derive redshift is clear through the comparison with the UBVRI broad-band system. The accuracy in redshift determination with BATC system is mainly affected by the selection of filters and the photometric uncertainties in the observation. When we take the limiting magnitudes of the 15 filters into account, we find that redshift can be determined with good accuracy for galaxies with redshifts less than 0.5, using only filters with central wavelengths shorter than 6000 A., Comment: 22 pages, accepted for publishing by PASP

In this paper, we present a set of photometric observations in 15 colors of stars in the Landolt covered by the system range from 300 nm to 1000 nm. Visual magnitudes of the stars being studied in the field are from 10th to 20th mag. The observational methodology and the data reduction procedures are described. The relationships between the BATC intermediate-band system and the Landolt UBVRI broad band system are obtained. A catalogue of the photometry has been produced which contains the SEDs of 3613 stars. This paper is the first in a series presenting CCD multicolor photometry for 145 HII regions, selected from 369 candidate regions from Boulesteix et al. (1974), in the nearby spiral galaxy M33. The observations, which covered the whole area of M33, were carried out by the Beijing Astronomical Observatory 60/90 cm Schmidt Telescope, in 13 intermediate-band filters, covering a range of wavelength from 3800 to 10000 A. This provides a series of maps which can be converted to a multicolor map of M33, in pixels of 1.7''*1.7''. Using aperture photometry we obtain the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for these HII regions. We also give their identification charts. Using the relationship between the BATC intermediate-band system used for the observations and the UBVRI broad-band system, the magnitudes in the B and V bands are then derived. Histograms of the magnitudes in V and in B-V are plotted, and the color-magnitude diagram is also given. The distribution of magnitudes in the V band shows that the apparent magnitude of almost all the regions is brighter than 18, corresponding to an absolute magnitude of -6.62 for an assumed distance modulus of 24.62, which corresponds to a single main sequence O5 star, while the distribution of color shows that the sample is blue, with a mode close to -0.05 as would be expected from a range of typical young clusters., Comment: 34 pages, 19 figures including 16 of jpg form, will appear in the December 2002 issue of AJ

In this third paper of our series, we present CCD spectrophotometry of 78 star clusters that were detected by Chandar, Bianchi, & Ford in the nearby spiral galaxy M33. CCD images of M33 were obtained as a part of the BATC Color Survey of the sky in 13 intermediate-band filters from 3800 to 10000{\AA}. By aperture photometry, we obtain the spectral energy distributions of these 78 star clusters. As Chandar, Bianchi, & Ford did, we estimate the ages of our sample clusters by comparing the photometry of each object with theoretical stellar population synthesis models for different values of metallicity. We find that the sample clusters formed continuously in M33 from $\sim 3\times10^6$ -- $10^{10}$ years. This conclusion is consistent with Chandar, Bianchi, & Ford. The results also show that, there are two peaks in cluster formation, at $\sim 8\times10^6$ and $\sim 10^9$ years in these clusters., Comment: 29 pages, one figure is gif form, will appear in the June 2002 issue of AJ

An optical photometric observation with the BATC multicolor system is carried out for the central 56' x 56' region of the nearby cluster of galaxies, Abell 2634. We achieved the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 5572 sources detected down to $V \sim 20$ mag, including 178 previously known galaxies, with fourteen filters covering a wavelength range from 3600 \AA\ to 10000 \AA. After excluding the foreground and background galaxies, a sample of 124 known members is formed for an investigation of the SED properties. Based on the knowledge of SED properties of member galaxies, we performed the selection of faint galaxies belonging to Abell 2634. The color-color diagrams are powerful in the star/galaxy separation, and 359 faint galaxies are selected by their color features. The technique of photometric redshift and color-magnitude correlation for the early-type galaxies are applied for these faint galaxies, and a list of 74 faint member galaxies is achieved. Basis on the enlarged sample of member galaxies, the spatial distribution and color-magnitude relation of the galaxies in core region of Abell 2634 are discussed. We find a tendency that the color index dispersion of the early-type members is larger for the outer region, which might reflect some clues about the environmental effect on the evolution of galaxies in a cluster., Comment: 35 pages, 21 Postscript figures and tables, LaTeX, using aasms4.sty

In this paper we present CCD spectrophotometry of the star clusters that were detected by Chandar, Bianchi, & Ford in the nearby spiral galaxy M33, using the images obtained with the Beijing Astronomical Observatory 60/90 cm Schmidt Telescope in 13 intermediate-band filters from 3800 to 10000{\AA}. The observations cover the whole area of M33 with a total integration of 32.75 hours from September 23, 1995 to August 28, 2000. This provides a multi-color map of M33 in pixels of $1.7'' \times 1.7''$. By aperture photometry, we obtain the spetral energy distributions (SEDs) of these star clusters. Using theoretical stellar population synthesis models, we also obtain the distributions of age and metallicity of of these star clusters. These clusters formed continuously from $\sim 3\times10^6$ -- $10^{10}$ years, and have a large span of metallicity from ${\rm {Z}=0.0004}$ to ${\rm {Z}=0.05}$., Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures, will appear in the October 2001 issue of AJ

The edge-on, nearby spiral galaxy NGC5907 has long been used as the prototype of a ``non-interacting'' warped galaxy. We report here the discovery of two interactions with companion dwarf galaxies that substantially change this picture. First, a faint ring structure is discovered around this galaxy that is likely due to the tidal disruption of a companion dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The ring is elliptical in shape with the center of NGC5907 close to one of the ring's foci. This suggests the ring material is in orbit around NGC5907. No gaseous component to the ring has been detected either with deep H$\alpha$ images or in Very Large Array (VLA) HI 21-cm line maps. The visible material in the ring has an integrated luminosity <= 10^8 L_sun and its brightest part has a color R-I ~ 0.9. All of these properties are consistent with the ring being a tidally-disrupted dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Second, we find that NGC5907 has a dwarf companion galaxy, PGC54419, projected to be only 36.9 kpc from the center of NGC5907, close in radial velocity (\Delta V = 45 km s^{-1}) to the giant spiral galaxy. This dwarf is seen at the tip of the HI warp and in the direction of the warp. Hence, NGC5907 can no longer be considered ``non-interacting,'' but is obviously interacting with its dwarf companions much as the Milky Way interacts with its dwarf galaxies. These results, coupled with the finding by others that dwarf galaxies tend to be found around giant galaxies, suggest that tidal interaction with companions, even if containing a mere 1% of the mass of the parent galaxy, might be sufficient to excite the warps found in the disks of many large spiral galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL, 8 pages, AASTeX, 3 figures
