Toxic, hazardous petrochemical solvents are commonly used for industrial-scale ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber production, but orange terpenes, a byproduct of orange fruit production, present a bio-derived, sustainable alternative. In this work, fine UHMWPE fibers were spun using orange terpenes as the spin solvent, hot-drawn at a draw ratio of 5:1, investigated for their morphology, microstructure, and thermal and mechanical properties. The resulting fibers exhibited a flat, micro-ribbon cross-section, which is highly desirable for achieving high fiber volume fractions in UHMWPE-fiber reinforced composites. After drawing, the fibers possessed 4x greater breaking tenacity than any previously published studies on UHMWPE fibers spun using orange terpenes with a tenacity of 8.6 cN/dtex and tensile modulus of 229.2 cN/dtex. Microstructural analysis via differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction revealed that the hot drawing process significantly increased molecular orientation, but crystallinity decreased due to crystallite melting during drawing. Therefore, the mechanical properties of these fibers may be significantly improved with optimization of the fiber drawing process. This work establishes the strong potential of orange terpenes as an environmentally-friendly alternative solvent for UHMWPE gel spinning and sets a foundation for future parametric optimization of the spinning and drawing of these fibers. Abstract The microbiota plays an important role in the growth of mosquitoes and the transmission of mosquito‐borne pathogens. The effects of changes in aquatic habitats in which mosquitoes live, as one of the major factors closely associated with the microbial communities of mosquitoes, on the microbiota of different developmental stages remain to be elucidated. Here, we compared the microbiota of larvae and pupae of Aedes albopictus exposed to different ampicillin concentrations and investigated the bacterial composition of adult females. The results demonstrate that the microbial community differed substantially between developmental stages and that samples of the same stages shared similarities, whereas differences were observed between adult females. Based on all observations, we hypothesize that the use of ampicillin caused dysbiosis rather than excluding bacteria from mosquitoes and that the disturbing effect of ampicillin was obvious in adults. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses revealed that most of the bacteria identified in this study were significantly associated with metabolism. Taken together, our results indicate that ampicillin can change the abundance of bacteria, while microbial communities of Ae. albopictus showed obvious stage‐specific characteristics. Further investigations are needed to characterize specific bacterial components that are affected by ampicillin exposure and to quantify their functions, thereby providing a better understanding of the influence of antibiotics on microbial communities at different life stages.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is the core component of terrestrial carbon (C) sink. Exploring the transformation and stabilization mechanism of SOC is key to understand the function of terrestrial C sink which copes with climate change. The traditional perspective is that plant residues are the initial source of SOC. The new concept of "soil microbial C pump" emphasizes that the synthesized products of soil microbial assimilation are important contributors to the stable SOC. This provides a new insight to the sequestration mechanism of SOC. Due to the complex and variable decomposition process of plant residues and the high heterogeneity of microbial residues, the transformation and stabilization mechanism of plant residues and microbial residues into SOC is still unclear. We reviewed research progress in plant and microbial residues, and introduced the characterization methods of quantification and transformation of plant residues and microbial residues, and also summarized the new findings on the transformation of plant and microbial residues into SOC. We further discussed the contribution and driving factors of microbial and plant-derived C to SOC. Finally, we prospected the future development direction and research focus in this field. Extracellular enzymes are the major mediators of plant residue and organic matter decomposition in soil, frequently associated with microbial metabolic processes and the biochemical cycling of nutrients in soil ecosystems. However, the dynamic trends and driving factors of extracellular enzymes and their stoichiometry during plant residue transformation remain to be further studied. Here, we investigated the dynamics of extracellular enzymes and enzymatic stoichiometry in the "litter-soil" transformation interface soil (TIS) layer, an essential occurrence layer for microbially-mediated C transformation. The results indicated an unbalanced relationship between substrate resource supply and microbial metabolic demand. Microbial metabolism was limited by C (C/N-acquiring enzymes > 1) and P (N/P-acquiring enzymes < 1) throughout the observed stages of plant residue transformation. The initially higher extracellular enzyme activity reflected the availability of the active components (dissolved carbon (DC), nitrogen (DN), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), nitrogen (MBN), and phosphorus (MBP)) in the substrate and the higher intensity of microbial metabolism. With the transformation of plant residues, the active fraction ceased to be the predominant microbial C source, forcing the secretion of C-acquiring enzymes and N-acquiring enzymes to obtain C sources and N nutrients from refractory substrates. Moreover, C/N-acquiring enzymes decreased, while C/P-acquiring enzymes and N/P-acquiring enzymes subsequently increased, which suggested that the microbial demand for N gradually increased and for P relatively decreased. Soil microorganisms can be forced into dormancy or intracellular mineralization due to the lack of substrate resources, so microbial biomass and extracellular enzyme activities decreased significantly compared to initial values. In summary, the results indicated that soil nutrients indirectly contribute to extracellular enzymes and their stoichiometry by affecting microbial activities. Furthermore, extracellular enzymes and their stoichiometry were more sensitive to the response of soil microbial biomass carbon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
