Lignocellulose, as the most abundant type of inedible biomass, is considered as a promising renewable feedstock for making fuels, chemicals, and materials. However, its complex structure makes most of current biorefinery processes suffer from low resource utilization rates, high energy consumption or ill-defined market orientation of the obtained products. Here, we propose and evaluate the EXA (Ethanol, Xylose, Adhesive) biorefinery strategy based on current xylose industry. This process integrates four conversion and separation stages to consecutively produce ethanol, xylose, and adhesive with total carbon utilization of 79.6%. The key innovation is the establishment of an easy-to-operate process for direct production of high-quality adhesive from a lignin-rich liquid fraction that makes the overall process significantly more sustainable. Techno-economic analysis (TEA) shows that the revenue of proposed EXA process increases more than 110 times compares with the current process and life cycle assessment (LCA) demonstrates a much lower CO2 footprint from an environmental burden per unit of revenue perspective.

Enzymatic hydrolysis of biomass is highly dependent on the changes in chemical compositions and structural characteristics after pretreatment. γ-Valerolactone (GVL)/dilute acid pretreatment is an effective approach to remove hemicelluloses and lignin and disrupt the cell wall structure, leading to the improvement of enzymatic hydrolysis. This study examined the influence of chemical compositions and structural features on the enzymatic hydrolysis of Eucalyptus urophylla from GVL/dilute acid pretreatment. Results revealed that glucose yield showed a positive correlation with removal rate of hemicelluloses and lignin. Particularly, there was no direct correlation of cellulose crystallinity on enzymatic hydrolysis. The highest glucose yield of 89.1% was achieved when the pretreatment was performed with GVL/H2O solution (4:1, v/v) containing 100 mM H2SO4 at 120 °C for 60 min. Meanwhile, under the mentioned conditions, 16.5% of lignin with a high purity (only contained 0.09% sugars) and molecular weight (3450 g/mol) was fractionated, which can be served as feedstock for future utilization. In short, an extensive understanding of the pretreated biomass and the obtained lignin during the GVL/dilute acid pretreatment will be beneficial for value-added applications of biomass.

An aspirational pretreatment method for efficient fractionation and tailored valorization of large industrial biomass can ensure the realizability of sustainable biorefinery strategies. In this study, an ultrafast alkaline deep eutectic solvents (DES) pretreatment strategy was developed to efficiently extract the lignin nanoparticles and retain cellulose residues that could be readily enzymatic saccharified to obtain fermentative glucose for the bioenergy production from industrial xylose residue. Results showed that the DES pretreatment had excellent delignification performance and the regenerated DES lignin nanoparticles exhibited well-preserved structures and excellent antioxidant activity, as well as low molecular weights and relatively uniform size distribution, which could facilitate downstream catalytic degradation for production of chemicals and preparation of lignin-based materials. Under the optimal condition (DES pretreatment: 80 °C, 10 min; saccharification: 10 FPU/g, 5 wt%, 100 mg/g Tween 80), the glucose yield of 90.12% could be achieved, which was dramatically increased compared to raw materials.

Six types of lignin-carbohydrate complex (LCC) fractions were isolated from Eucalyptus. The acidic dioxane treatment applied significantly improved the yield of LCCs. The extraction conditions had a limited impact on the LCC structures and linkages. Characterization of the lignin-carbohydrate complex (LCC) structures and linkages promises to offer insight on plant cell wall chemistry. In this case, Eucalyptus LCCs were extracted by aqueous dioxane, and then precipitated sequentially by 70% ethanol, 100% ethanol, and acidic water (pH = 2). The composition and structure of the six LCC fractions obtained by selective precipitation were investigated by sugar analysis, molecular weight determination, and 2D HSQC NMR. It was found that the acidic (0.05-M HCl) dioxane treatment significantly improved the yield of LCCs (66.4% based on Klason lignin), which was higher than the neutral aqueous dioxane extraction, and the extraction condition showed limited impact on the LCC structures and linkages. In the fractionation process, the low-molecular-weight LCCs containing a high content of carbohydrates (60.3-63.2%) were first precipitated by 70% ethanol from the extractable solution. The phenyl glycoside (PhGlc) bonds (13.0-17.0 per 100Ar) and highly acetylated xylans were observed in the fractions recovered by the precipitation with 100% ethanol. On the other hand, such xylan-rich LCCs exhibited the highest frequency of β-O-4 linkages. The benzyl ether (BE) bonds were only detected in the fractions obtained by acidic water precipitation.

The mechanisms by which conductive and dielectric nanoparticles (NPs) trap electrons are explained by the potential well distribution caused by induced or polarized charges on NPs. Thus, the distributions of surface and saturation charges on conductive and dielectric NPs are determined. Given conductive Fe3O4, semiconductive TiO2, and dielectric Al2O3 NPs, insulation performance tests are conducted and ionization models of nanofluids (NFs) based on transformer oil are developed. These models are compared with those of NFs based on pure oil. The NP whose conductivity or permittivity does not match that of the dielectric liquid has a potential well and an increased amount of saturation charges on its interface. This NP influences streamer development strongly and enhances the breakdown of oilbased NF.
