Abstract Objectives The goals of this study were to investigate the treatment outcomes of acute thromboembolic occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery (ATOS) and identify prognostic factors after treatment. Methods The clinical data of 62 patients with ATOS between 2013 and 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were stratified by the treatment strategy, complications and mortality were compared in different group. Results Sixty-two consecutive patients were identified with ATOS. The median patient age was 69 years (interquartile range 58–79 years). Endovascular therapy was initiated in 21 patients, and 4 patients received conservative treatment. Open surgery was performed first in the remaining 37 patients. The technical success rates of the endovascular first group and open surgery group were 90.5% and 97.3%, respectively. One patient in the conservative treatment group had progression of ischemia to extensive bowel necrosis. There was no difference in 30-day mortality between these groups. Predictors of 30-day mortality included initial neutrophil count > 12* 103/dL, age over 60 years old and history of chronic renal insufficiency. Conclusions Endovascular treatment or conservative treatment may be adopted in selected patients who do not exhibit signs and symptoms of bowel necrosis, and close monitoring for bowel necrosis is important. The increase in preoperative neutrophil count, age over 60 years old and history of chronic renal insufficiency were poor prognostic factors.

Peracetic acid (PAA), known for its environmentally friendly properties as a oxidant and bactericide, is gaining prominence in decontamination and disinfection applications. The primary product of PAA oxidation is acetate that can serve as an electron acceptor (EA) for the biosynthesis of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) via chain elongation (CE) reactions. Hence, PAA-based pretreatment is supposed to be beneficial for MCFAs production from anaerobic sludge fermentation, as it could enhance organic matter availability, suppress competing microorganisms and furnish EA by providing acetate. However, such a hypothesis has rarely been proved. Here we reveal that PAA-based pretreatment leads to significant exfoliation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from sludge flocs and disruption of proteinic secondary structures, through inducing highly active free radicals and singlet oxygen. The production of MCFAs increases substantially to 11,265.6 mg COD L−1, while the undesired byproducts, specifically long-chain alcohols (LCAs), decrease to 723.5 mg COD L−1. Microbial activity tests further demonstrate that PAA pretreatment stimulates the CE process, attributed to the up-regulation of functional genes involved in fatty acid biosynthesis pathway. These comprehensive findings provide insights into the effectiveness and mechanisms behind enhanced MCFAs production through PAA-based technology, advancing our understanding of sustainable resource recovery from sewage sludge.

[INLINE:1] Neuroinflammation exacerbates secondary damage after spinal cord injury, while microglia/macrophage pyroptosis is important to neuroinflammation. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play a role in the central nervous system. However, the functional role and mechanism of circRNAs in regulating microglia/macrophage pyroptosis after spinal cord injury are still poorly studied. In the present study, we detected microglia/macrophage pyroptosis in a female rat model of spinal cord injury, along with upregulated levels of circ0000381 in the spinal cord. Our further experimental results suggest that circ0000381 may function as a sponge to sequester endogenous microRNA423-3p (miR-423-3p), which can increase the expression of NOD-like receptor 3 (NLRP3), a pyroptosis marker. Therefore, upregulation of circ0000381 may be a compensatory change after spinal cord injury to attenuate microglia/macrophage pyroptosis. Indeed, knockdown of circ0000381 expression exacerbated microglia/macrophage pyroptosis. Collectively, our findings provide novel evidence for the upregulation of circ0000381, which may serve as a neuroprotective mechanism to attenuate microglia/macrophage pyroptosis after spinal cord injury. Accordingly, circ0000381 may be a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of spinal cord injury.

Chronic pain after spine surgery (CPSS) is often characterized by intractable low back pain and/or radiating leg pain, and has been reported in 8–40% of patients that received lumbar spine surgery. We conducted a literature search of PubMed, MEDLINE/OVID with a focus on studies about the etiology and treatments of CPSS and low back pain. Our aim was to provide a narrative review that would help us better understand the pathogenesis and current treatment options for CPSS. This knowledge will aid in the development of optimal strategies for managing postoperative pain symptoms and potentially curing the underlying etiologies. Firstly, we reviewed recent advances in the mechanistic study of CPSS, illustrated both structural (e.g., fibrosis and scaring) and non-structural factors (e.g., inflammation, neuronal sensitization, glial activation, psychological factor) causing CPSS, and highlighted those having not been given sufficient attention as the etiology of CPSS. Secondly, we summarized clinical evidence and therapeutic perspectives of CPSS. We also presented new insights about the treatments and etiology of CPSS, in order to raise awareness of medical staff in the identification and management of this complex painful disease. Finally, we discussed potential new targets for clinical interventions of CPSS and future perspectives of mechanistic and translational research. CPSS patients often have a mixed etiology. By reviewing recent findings, the authors advocate that clinicians shall comprehensively evaluate each case to formulate a patient-specific and multi-modal pain treatment, and importantly, consider an early intraoperative intervention that may decrease the risk or even prevent the onset of CPSS. Translational potential statement: CPSS remains difficult to treat. This review broadens our understanding of clinical therapies and underlying mechanisms of CPSS, and provides new insights which will aid in the development of novel mechanism-based therapies for not only managing the established pain symptoms but also preventing the development of CPSS.

Abstract Background Masquelet’s induced membrane (IM) has osteogenesis activity, but IM spontaneous osteogenesis (SO) has not been described previously. Objectives To report on varying degrees of IMSO and analyze its possible causes. Methods Twelve eight-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats with 10 mm right femoral bone defects who received the first stage of IM technique (IMT) were used to observe the SO. In addition, clinical data from patients with bone defects who received the first stage of IMT with an interval of > 2 months post-operatively and exhibited SO between January 2012 and June 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The SO was divided into four grades according to the amount and characteristics of the new bone formation. Results At twelve weeks, grade II SO was observed in all rats, and more new bone was formed in the IM near the bone end forming an uneven margin. Histology revealed bone and cartilage foci in the new bone. Four of the 98 patients treated with the first stage of IMT exhibited IMSO, including one female and three males with a median age of 40.5 years (range 29–52 years). The bone defects were caused by severe fractures and infection in two cases and by infection or tumor in one case each. Partial or segmental defects occurred in two cases. The time interval between inserting a cement spacer and diagnosis of SO ranged from six months to nine years. Two cases were grade I, and one case each of grades III and IV. Conclusion Varying degrees of SO confirm the existence of the IMSO phenomenon. Bioactive bone tissue or local inflammation and a long time interval are the primary reasons underlying enhancement of the osteogenic activity of IM and leading to SO, which tends to take place as endochondral osteogenesis.

Many scholars have studied spatial equity issues of urban service delivery facilities in the past, including the pharmacy accessibility and pharmacy deserts. However, the analysis of spatial disparity of pharmacies in Virginia is lacking. To fill this research gap, we employed both statistical and geospatial methods to examine the pharmacy disparity and desert issues in Virginia. These methods include correlation, stepwise regression, average nearest neighbor analysis, network analysis, and geographically weighted regression (GWR). We examined five vulnerable populations and their accessibility to pharmacies. These subpopulations include racial minorities (defined as nonwhite population in this study), persons with income below the poverty level, older adults (age 65+), persons with disability, and households without vehicles. We found that spatial inequity of pharmacies exists in Virginia. At the statewide macro level, the spatial distribution of older adults is, largely, correlated with that of pharmacies. However, as revealed by GWR at local levels, the spatial pattern of pharmacy distribution is much more complicated, exhibiting both spatial inequity and social inequity (especially racial inequity, which is ubiquitous in Virginia). Pharmacies may be adequate for certain groups of people, but simultaneously inadequate for others.

Richmond, Virginia has implemented numerous mixed land-use policies to encourage non-private-vehicle commuting for decades based on the best practices of other cities and the assumption that land-use mixture would positively lead to trip reduction. This paper uses both Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and statistical tools to empirically test this hypothesis. With local land use and trip making data as inputs, it first calculates two common indices of land-use mixture - entropy and dissimilarity indices, using GIS tool, supplemented by Microsoft Excel. Afterwards, it uses Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) to calculate the correlation matrices among land-use mixture indices, socioeconomic variables, and home-based work/other trip rates, followed by a series of regression model runs on these variables. Through this study, it has been found that land-use mixture has some but weak effects on home-based work trip rate, and virtually no effects on home-based other trip rate. In contrast, socioeconomic variables, especially auto ownership, have larger effects on home-based trip making.

This paper statistically assesses the impacts of household/zonal socio economic characteristics on tour making within the Richmond/Tri-Cities Model Region, Virginia, United States, based on the dataset made available through the 2009 Virginia National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) Add-On Program. The tour analysis distinguishes nine tour types (three simple tours and six complex tours) stratified by aggregate tour purposes of work (including school and other subsistence activities), maintenance and discretionary. A series of regression model runs have yielded the following conclusions: First, at aggregate level, the number of drivers, median household income, household size, number of workers, and zonal walking modal share are statistically significant and positively impact tour frequency. Tour length and complexity are positively related to household income and number of vehicles, but negatively related to zonal walking modal share. Second, at an individual tour type level, each tour type’s frequency/length/complexity is impacted by a different set of household/zonal socioeconomic characteristics. Zonal socioeconomic characteristics have little or no impacts on household tour making. Abstract Background Ortner’s syndrome refers to vocal cord paralysis resulting from compression of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve by abnormal mediastinal vascular structures. This retrospective case series details our experience with Ortner’s syndrome due to thoracic aortic aneurysm. Methods This study was a retrospective analysis of a case series. A total of 4 patients (mean age, 65.5 years) with Ortner’s syndrome due to thoracic aortic aneurysm underwent thoracic endovascular aortic repair from July 2014 to May 2020. The patients’ demographics, comorbidities, initial symptoms, time from hoarseness to treatment, aneurysm shape and size, surgical procedures and outcome are summarized. Results A total of 4 patients with Ortner’s syndrome due to thoracic aortic aneurysm were analyzed. All the patients underwent thoracic endovascular aortic repair with no complications during the hospitalization period. At a mean follow-up of 26.8 (8–77) months, hoarseness in 3 patients had completely resolved or improved, and the symptoms in 1 patient had not progressed. Conclusions Hoarseness due to left recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy can be the presenting symptom of thoracic aortic aneurysm. Early diagnosis leads to timely treatment of these patients which may be helpful in the functional recovery of symptoms.

Abstract The field of research on pain originating from various bone diseases is expanding rapidly, with new mechanisms and targets asserting both peripheral and central sites of action. The scope of research is broadening from bone biology to neuroscience, neuroendocrinology, and immunology. In particular, the roles of primary sensory neurons and non-neuronal cells in the peripheral tissues as important targets for bone pain treatment are under extensive investigation in both pre-clinical and clinical settings. An understanding of the peripheral mechanisms underlying pain conditions associated with various bone diseases will aid in the appropriate application and development of optimal strategies for not only managing bone pain symptoms but also improving bone repairing and remodeling, which potentially cures the underlying etiology for long-term functional recovery. In this review, we focus on advances in important preclinical studies of significant bone pain conditions in the past 5 years that indicated new peripheral neuronal and non-neuronal mechanisms, novel targets for potential clinical interventions, and future directions of research.

ObjectiveAcute limb embolism (ALE) is a challenging, highly morbid, and frequently fatal vascular emergency. Percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy (PMT) devices are an alternative treatment to restore perfusion by removing emboli in the limb arterial system. We evaluated the outcomes of treatment of ALE patients using PMT devices in our center.MethodsA retrospective review of ALE patients treated with Rotarex S (Straub Medical) at a single institution from 2018 to 2022 was performed. The primary outcome was technical success, defined as complete recanalization of the occluded segment with satisfactory outflow and good capillary filling of the distal parts of the foot without any major or obstructing residual emboli or thrombi either in the treated segment or in the outflow tract without the need for additional catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) or conversion to open surgery. Embolized segments treated, treatment outcomes, and perioperative complications were reviewed.ResultsA total of 17 ALE patients (29% men, 71% women; mean age, 73 years) underwent PMT procedures. The femoral arteries and popliteal arteries are the most commonly treated vessels, with both present in 59% of the patients. The technical success rate was 100%, but the majority of cases (82%) had concurrent percutaneous transluminal angioplasty or stent grafting, and two patients were treated with urokinase during the operation. There was one thrombotic recurrence that required amputation. There were no 30-day deaths. Complications included extravasation after PMT (two), intraoperative embolization of the outflow tract (one), access site hematoma (one), target artery thrombosis (one), and acute kidney injury (one). There were no severe bleeding complications.ConclusionsThe Rotarex S device has a satisfactory success rate, although complementary use of various adjunctive techniques is frequently required. It seems to be a moderately effective tool for treating ALE to avoid CDT or open surgery. The device appears safe, with low risks of amputation and mortality rates, but special attention should be given to the potential for extravasation and distal embolism.

BackgroundAccording to intervertebral space division, the characteristics of interbody bone graft fusion after transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) were assessed via computed tomography (CT) scan to provide a theoretical basis for selecting the bone grafting site of interbody fusion.MethodsThe medical records of 57 patients with lumbar spinal stenosis and disc herniation treated with TLIF were analysed retrospectively. In total, 57 segments received lumbar interbody fusion. A thin-layer CT scan was performed to evaluate fusion in each zone of the fusion space.ResultsThe fusion rates were 57.89% (n = 33) in the anterior cage zone, 73.68% (n = 42) in the posterior cage zone, 66.67% (n = 38) in the decompression zone, 26.32% (n = 15) in the contralateral decompression zone and 94.74% (n = 54) in the inner cage zone. Abstract Background The impact of intravertebral cleft (IVC) on cement leakage in percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) has been discussed. However, the results were conflicting, as the study population and cement leakage classification were heterogeneous. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of IVC on the incidence of leakage through vein, leakage through cortex as well as general leakage in PVP for OVCFs. Methods All patients with OVCFs who underwent PVP between January 2016 and June 2019 at our institution were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were eligible for this case-control study if they were diagnosed as single level fracture in spine. After inclusive and exclusive criteria were met, a total of 139 patients with IVC were enrolled as the study group. Non-IVC controls were matched in a 1:1 ratio in age (within 3 years), sex and fracture severity with patients in study group. Cement leakage were classified into four types [type B (through basivertebral vein), type S (through segmental vein), type-C (through a cortical defect), and type D (intradiscal leakage)], furtherly into two types [venous type (type-B or/and type S) and cortical type (type-C or/and type-D)]. A general leakage rate and a specific leakage rate per each type were compared between both groups. Results Each group included 139 patients. Groups were homogenous for age, sex, fracture severity, fracture location, fracture type, cement volume, puncture approach and property of cement. Compared with control group, IVC group had a significantly lower rate of type-B (20.9% vs. 31.7%, P = 0.041), type-S (24.5% vs. 52.5%, P = 0.000), and venous type leakage (37.4% vs. 67.6%, P = 0.000), a significantly higher rate of type-C (25.9% vs. 12.2%, P = 0.004), type-D (16.5% vs. 6.5%, P = 0.009), and cortical type leakage (40.3% vs. 16.5%, P = 0.000), no significant difference on the rate of general leakage (67.6% vs. 76.3%, P = 0.109). Conclusion IVC decreased the risk of cement leakage through vein and increased the risk of cement leakage through cortex. However, it had no significant effect on the occurrence of general leakage.

Iliac vein compression syndrome is a rare disorder that causes oedema of one or both legs, with or without thrombosis. This current case report describes a 71-year-old male patient with left iliac vein compression caused by a bladder diverticulum that occurred secondary to chronic prostatic hyperplasia. The patient presented with left leg oedema without deep vein thrombosis. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen and pelvis, Doppler ultrasound imaging of the lower limb veins and magnetic resonance imaging helped confirm the diagnosis. The patient initially underwent urinary catheter placement, which relieved urinary retention and iliac vein compression. He subsequently underwent bladder diverticulectomy and transurethral prostatectomy. The postoperative clinical course was uneventful. During the 1.5-year follow-up, the patient did not have lower extremity oedema. Bladder diverticulum is an extremely rare cause of iliac vein compression syndrome, and only five such cases, including this one, have been reported to date. This article presents a literature review of these cases and a summary of the diagnosis and treatment experience.

BackgroundFew centers have adopted endovascular revascularization for the treatment of superior mesenteric artery embolism (SMAE). We sought to evaluate the efficacy of endovascular therapy for the treatment of SMAE and identify post-treatment prognostic factors.MethodsThe clinical data of 41 patients with acute SMA embolism between 2013 and 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with mesenteric artery thrombosis, mesenteric venous thrombosis, and who had only conservative treatment were excluded.ResultsForty-one consecutive patients were identified with SMAE (median age, [range] 35–86 years). Endovascular therapy was initiated in 14 patients with no clinical evidence of bowel necrosis, with mainly mechanical thrombectomy, and technical success was achieved in 93%. Endovascular therapy had advantages in duration surgery time, blood loss, bowel rest time, ICU time, and ventilator use. There was no difference in bowel necrosis, length of necrotic bowel resected, or in-hospital mortality between the two groups. An initial white blood cell (WBC) count >15 × 103/dl and neutrophil count >13 × 103/dl were associated with an increased risk of bowel necrosis, and an initial WBC count, renal function, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA >3) and necrotic bowel >2 m were associated with increased mortality.ConclusionsEndovascular treatment has altered the management of SMAE, and it may be adopted in selected patients who are not at risk for bowel necrosis. Avoidance of bowel necrosis patients and close monitoring for bowel necrosis are important.

BackgroundThe Ankura II Thoracic Stent Graft System (Lifetech, Shenzhen, China) is an evolution of the Ankura stent graft. This study reports one-year outcomes of the Ankura II Thoracic Stent Graft System for endovascular treatment of Stanford type B aortic dissections.MethodsThe Ankura II Thoracic Aortic Endovascular Trial was a randomized, single-blinded, clinical trial conducted at 12 Chinese institutes. The enrolled patients diagnosed with Stanford type B aortic dissections (TBADs) were randomly assigned to the Ankura group or Ankura II group. Standard follow-up examinations were performed at 1, 6, and 12 months. Safety and efficacy data were analyzed.Results132 patients with TBADs were enrolled. The outcomes for the primary safety end points revealed that the Ankura II stent graft was statistically non-inferior compared to the Ankura stent graft. The 1-month device-related major adverse events (1.6 vs. 0%; p = 0.48), 1-month all-cause mortality (1.7 vs. 4.5%; p = 0.621), 12-month survival rate (95.2 ± 2.7% vs. 94.1 ± 2.9%; p = 0.769), and major adverse event (MAE) rate (5.1 vs. 4.7% at 1 month; p = 0.73 and 5.8 vs. 8.9% at 12 months; p = 0.718) of Ankura II group are all comparable to Ankura group. The two groups showed similar primary effectiveness and true lumen expansion effect, and false lumen remodeling was improved in Ankura II group (−100.0 vs. −48.5%; p = 0.08).ConclusionsThe one-year outcomes from this prospective, randomized, multicenter study demonstrate that Ankura II stent graft shows comparable results to Ankura for treating TBADs, resulting in low mortality rates, MAEs and reintervention rates.Clinical Trial RegistrationChiCTR-TRC-12002844.

Selenate (SeO42−) and sulfate (SO42−) are frequently present together with chromate (CrO42−) in certain industrial wastewaters. SeO42− and CrO42− are required to be reduced while SO42− reduction should be minimized to avoid the production of toxic sulfide. In this study, a modified biofilm model was employed to investigate the interactions between CrO42−, SeO42− and SO42− bioreduction in a methane (CH4)-based membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR). The model was calibrated using steady-state experimental data of two reported CH4-based MBfRs reducing these oxyanions. The modeling results suggested that the majority of methanotrophs (>80%) were located in the outer layer of the biofilm, while the oxyanions-reducing bacteria preferred to grow close to the membrane. The introduction of SeO42− or SO42− enriched selenate/sulfate-reducing bacteria (SeRB/SRB) but decreased the abundance of chromate-reducing bacteria (CRB). A biofilm thickness of >300 μm, an HRT of higher than 4 h and an influent dissolved oxygen concentration of 0.3 mg /L were favorable for simultaneous high-level CrO42− and SeO42− removal. A two-stage MBfR system with optimized operational conditions showed promise in retaining high-purity (>98%) selenium nanoparticles when treating both CrO42− and SeO42− impacted wastewaters. Abstract Background This quantitative meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of drug-eluting balloon (DEB) vs. uncoated balloon (UCB) in patients with femoropopliteal arterial occlusive disease. Methods Electronic databases were searched to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared DEB and UCB till November 2018. Background: Several paclitaxel-coated balloons have been proved to provide better efficacy results than uncoated balloons in femoropopliteal lesions. But the efficacy and safety of FREEWAY balloons have not been investigated in Chinese patients. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety performance of FREEWAY paclitaxel-coated balloons vs. uncoated balloons in Chinese femoropopliteal artery lesions.Methods: In this prospective multi-center randomized controlled FREEWAY-CHINA study, 311 patients with symptomatic lower limb ischemia (Rutherford category 2–5) and femoropopliteal lesions of 14 Chinese centers were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to endovascular treatment with either FREEWAY paclitaxel-coated balloons or uncoated balloons (control). The primary endpoint was the 6-month clinically-driven target lesion revascularization (CD-TLR) rate. Secondary endpoints included the device and technical success rate, the ankle-brachial indexes (ABIs), Rutherford category change, the 6-month primary and secondary patency rates, severe adverse effects, and the 12-month CD-TLR rate.Results: The two groups were comparable in terms of their demographic and lesion characteristics. Patients' mean age was 70 years, and 70% were men. The mean lesion length was 71 mm. The 6-month CD-TLR rate was 2.6% in the FREEWAY group and 11.7% in the control group (P = 0.001). The 12-month CD-TLR rate was 2.7% in the FREEWAY group and 13.2% in the control group (P = 0.0005). Other endpoints, including patency rates, major adverse events, and ABI or Rutherford change, did not differ between the two groups.Conclusion: The FREEWAY balloon resulted in an effective decrease in CD-TLR rates and had similar safety results compared to the uncoated balloon in Chinese femoropopliteal artery patients at the 12-month follow-up appointment.

Background: Studies investigating debulking devices with drug-coated balloons (DCBs) in the treatment of femoropopliteal (FP) artery in-stent restenosis (ISR) are limited. We aimed to evaluate the safety and midterm outcome of percutaneous mechanical atherectomy plus thrombectomy (MATH) using the Rotarex®S (Straub Medical, Wangs, Switzerland) catheter followed by a DCB in the treatment of FP-ISR.Methods: This study was a single-center single-arm trial. Patients with symptomatic (Rutherford category 2–5) de novo restenosis lesions of FP-ISR were treated with MATH and subsequent DCB. From June 2016 to May 2018, 59 patients with FP-ISR were enrolled. The primary endpoint was target lesion revascularization (TLR) and changes in the Rutherford category of the target limb at 12 months. Secondary endpoints included primary and secondary patency at 12 months, technical success rate, major adverse events, and ankle-brachial index (ABI). Risk factors for TLR were analyzed using Cox proportional hazard model.Results: The average follow-up time was 33 ± 8 months. The rate of technical success was 88.1% (52/59). Nine patients received bailout stenting. The rate of freedom from TLR was 84.7% (50/59) at 1 year, the Rutherford category changed at 12 months were significantly improved from baseline (p < 0.01). The primary patency rates and the secondary patency at the 12-month follow-ups were 82.5 and 92.5%, respectively. The ABI changed at 12 months were significantly improved from baseline (p < 0.01). Global limb anatomic staging system (GLASS) classification III [hazard ratio (HR) 18.44, 95% CI (1.57–215.99), p = 0.020] and postoperative Rutherford classification ≥4 [HR 8.28, 95% CI (1.85–37.06), p = 0.006] were identified as independent predictors of TLR.Conclusion: Our preliminary data suggested that MATH using a Rotarex®S catheter combined with DCB angioplasty is a safe, minimally invasive, and effective treatment for FP-ISR with favorable, immediate, and midterm outcomes.Clinical Trial Registration:http://www.chictr.org.cn, identifier [ChiCTR2000041380].

Ovarian vein thrombosis (OVT) is a rare medical disorder, which is most often found in the immediate postpartum period. OVT is rarely considered idiopathic. We report a case of idiopathic OVT with pulmonary embolism in a 33-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain. Computed tomography and postoperative pathology confirmed the diagnosis of idiopathic OVT. To date, only 12 cases of idiopathic OVT have been reported. In this case report, we present a summary of these cases and a review of literature regarding management of idiopathic OVT.

The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) spread rapidly in China in beginning of 2020. Self-quarantine was suggested by Chinese government to block the spread of the COVID-19. During the self-quarantine, the media played an indispensable role in acquisition of information about the disease. And it could also impact on people's mental health. Therefore, it is necessary to study the psychological outcome resulted from media use during the outbreak of COVID-19. The data in this article could help researchers to explore the mechanism between media use and mental health, and to have a deeper comprehension of the impact of media use on mental health during a public health emergency. The dataset provided in this article included 917 participants recruited from different provinces all over China. Among the participants, there were 304 males and 613 females, with an average age of 28.6 and a standard deviation of 9.5. They took Media Use Questionnaire (MUQ), Empathy-Sympathy Questionnaire (ESQ), Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS), Death Anxiety Questionnaire (DAQ), Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ), State boredom Questionnaire (SBQ), and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) to assess their media use and mental health during the outbreak of COVID-19. All these instruments for data collection were Chinese versions. In addition, a .csv file consists of major variables we used are included as a supplementary material. Descriptive statistics and hierarchical regression had been conducted with these data. The microbial safety of swimming pool waters (SPWs) becomes increasingly important with the popularity of swimming activities. Disinfection aiming at killing microbes in SPWs produces disinfection by-products (DBPs), which has attracted considerable public attentions due to their high frequency of occurrence, considerable concentrations and potent toxicity. We reviewed the latest research progress within the last four decades on the regulation, formation, exposure, and treatment of DBPs in the context of SPWs. This paper specifically discussed DBP regulations in different regions, formation mechanisms related with disinfectants, precursors and other various conditions, human exposure assessment reflected by biomarkers or epidemiological evidence, and the control and treatment of DBPs. Compared to drinking water with natural organic matter as the main organic precursor of DBPs, the additional human inputs (i.e., body fluids and personal care products) to SPWs make the water matrix more complicated and lead to the formation of more types and greater concentrations of DBPs. Dermal absorption and inhalation are two main exposure pathways for trihalomethanes while ingestion for haloacetic acids, reflected by DBP occurrence in human matrices including exhaled air, urine, blood, and plasma. Studies show that membrane filtration, advanced oxidation processes, biodegradation, thermal degradation, chemical reduction, and some hybrid processes are the potential DBP treatment technologies. The removal efficiency, possible mechanisms and future challenges of these DBP treatment methods are summarized in this review, which may facilitate their full-scale applications and provide potential directions for further research extension. Background Epidemics are associated with increased burden of psychological distress. However, the role of boredom on mental health during epidemic periods has seldom been explored. Objective This study attempted to examine the effect of state boredom on psychological outcomes, and the role of media use and meaning in life among the indirectly exposed Chinese adults in the initial phase of the COVID-19 outbreak. Method An online survey was administered to 917 Chinese adults on 28 January 2020 (1 week after the official declaration of person-to-person transmission of the coronavirus). Self-report questionnaires were used to assess state boredom, anxiety, depression, stress, media use and meaning in life. Moderated mediation analysis was conducted. Results Our results indicated that the effect of state boredom on anxiety and stress, but not depression, were mediated by media use and that sense of meaning in life modified this association. Meaning in life served as a risk factor, rather than a protective factor for the negative psychological outcomes when people experienced boredom. The association between boredom and media use was significant for high but not low meaning in life individuals. Conclusion These findings demonstrated that boredom and media use were associated with an increased burden or psychological distress in the sample. It is important to pay attention to the possible negative impact of boredom and media use during COVID-19, and find more ways to cope with boredom, especially those with high presence of meaning in life.

Data provided in this article were collected from 3784 high school students in South China, which measured teenagers' stressor (Stressors Scale for Middle School Students, SSMSS), mental health (Symptom Check-List 90, SCL90), coping style (Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, SCSQ), social support (Social Support Scale, SSS), parenting style (Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppforstran-own memories of parental rearing practice in childhood, EMBU) and self-efficacy (General Self-Efficacy Scale, GSES). All the instruments for data collection were in the Chinese version. Participants were 3784 students recruited from 15 high schools in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province of South China with random cluster sampling method. Among them, there were 1987 boys and 1797 girls, with an average age of 14.6 and a standard deviation of 1.82. The data in this article mainly present the sequences of activated sludge from a full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) carrying out simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorous removal in Beijing, China. Data include the operational conditions and performance, dominant microbes and taxonomic analysis in this WWTP, and function annotation results based on SEED, Clusters of Orthologous Groups (COG), and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases. Sequencing data were generated by using Illumina HiSeq. 2000 platform according to the recommendations of the manufacturer. The sequencing data have been deposited in MG-RAST server (project ID: mgm4735473.3). Inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) migration to the right ventricle is a life-threatening condition. Conventionally, on-pump ventriculotomy is required if the endovascular retrieval is compromised. However, for patients in fragile physical condition, the complications of myocardial revascularization are unacceptable. We herein present a case of IVCF migration to the right ventricle in which the hook of the filter was tilted against the anterior wall of the right ventricle. The IVCF was successfully removed via a hybrid technique combining an off-pump microincision of the right ventricle with direct-vision snare capture. This hybrid technique avoided the complication of myocardial revascularization, shortened the operation time, and reduced the amount of blood loss.

BackgroundThe cocirculation of duck hepatitis A virus subtypes 1 (DHAV-1) and 3 (DHAV-3) in ducklings has resulted in significant economic losses. Ducklings with DHAV-1 or DHAV-3 infection show similar clinical signs and gross lesions; hence, it is important to identify the viral subtypes in infected ducklings as early as possible for better clinical management.Methods and resultsBased on multiple 5' noncoding region (5'-NCR) sequences of DHAV-1 and DHAV-3 strain alignments, universal and type-specific primers were designed and synthesized. With three primers in one-tube reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR), reference DHAV-1 and DHAV-3 isolates ranging over 60 years and across many different countries were successfully amplified, indicating that the primer sequences were completely conserved. The sequence results and the sizes of amplicons from reference DHAV-1 and DHAV-3 isolates are completely correlated with their subtypes. Moreover, with this one-tube RT-PCR system, amplicon sizes from liver samples of reference DHAV-1- or DHAV-3-infected birds fit closely with their subtypes, which was determined by virus isolation and neutralization testing. No other duck-origin RNA viruses were detected. The sensitivity of viral RNA detection was 10 pg. With this system, 20% subtype 1, 45% subtype 3, and 9% coinfection of two subtypes were detected in 55 clinical samples.Conclusions and significanceThis novel approach could be used for rapidly typing DHAV-1 or DHAV-3 infection in routine clinical surveillance or epidemiological screening.
