Objectives To explore the approach to the diagnosis of malignant serous effusion (SE) caused by angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL). Methods The clinical, cytomorphologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular features of 6 patients were summarized. Results Clinically, SE caused by AITL was predominant in middle-aged and older male patients with multiple SEs and lymphadenopathy. Cytomorphology showed small to medium-sized, irregular lymphocytes with clear cytoplasm and mixed with various inflammatory cells and apoptosis. Hodgkin/Reed-Sternberg–like cells were detected in 2 of 6 cases. Furthermore, 2 patterns of cytomorphology were described for the first time. Flow cytometry revealed abnormal T-cell populations with loss of surface CD3 (3/4 cases) and CD7 (3/4 cases). In addition, B-cell populations lacking surface immunoglobulin (Ig) were identified in 2 of 4 cases. Immunocytochemical staining revealed expression of at least 2 T follicular helper markers. Epstein-Barr virus–encoded RNA (EBER)–positive cells were demonstrated in 4 of 5 cases. Clonal T-cell receptor γ chain rearrangement was detected in 6 cases, and 3 of them had concomitant clonal immunoglobulin gene rearrangement. Moreover, 2 cases revealed discrepant findings regarding IgH/Igκ rearrangements in cytohistologic correlation. Conclusions This study broadens the morphologic spectrum of malignant SE caused by AITL and provides diagnostic criteria in routine practice.

Background Promoting the high-quality development (HQD) of undertakings for the aged is an important action to proactively respond to the rapid population aging in China. This study analyzes spatial differentiation and driving factors of the HQD of China’s undertakings for the aged. Methods Based on a quantitative indicator system consisting of old-age social security, elder care services, health care service and older adults’ social participation, the HQD levels of 31 Chinese provincial administrative regions during 2013–2019 are measured by using the entropy weight method. Spatial panel regression models are used to analyze the impact of population aging, economic development and digital technology on the HQD of undertakings for the aged. Results The comprehensive level of the HQD slightly increased from 0.212 to 2013 to 0.220 in 2019, and the overall level was low. The HQD of the eastern region was the highest (0.292), followed by the western region (0.215), and the central region was the lowest (0.151). The high-high cluster type was mainly distributed in the eastern region; the low-low cluster type was mainly distributed in the western and central regions. Economic development and digital technology have significant positive effects while population aging has significant negative effects on the HQD of undertakings for the aged. Conclusion There is a significantly spatial differentiation in the HQD of China’s undertakings for the aged. In order to promote the HQD of undertakings for the aged, it is necessary to identify development gaps through making HQD evaluation and to focus on the indicators that are critical in maintaining sustainable economic development and to develop digital technology in order to get rid of those gaps.

Although China launched long-term care insurance (LTCI) pilot program in 2016, there are great challenges associated with developing a sustainable LTCI system due to limited financial resources and a rapid increase in the aging population. This study constructed an LTCI policy–population–economics (PPE) system to assess the sustainability of the LTCI system in China. Based on the latest 76 LTCI policy documents published between 2016 and 2021, this study evaluated the strength of LTCI policy modeling in 14 pilot cities by constructing a policy modeling consistency (PMC) index containing 9 main variables and 36 sub-variables. The coupling coordination model was used to evaluate the interaction between LTCI policy, population aging, and economic development. The results showed that the PMC index ranged from 0.527 to 0.850. The policy strength of Qingdao, Nantong, and Shanghai was the highest (PMC > 0.8). Anqing, Qiqihaer, Chongqing, and Chengdu had the lowest level of policy strength (PMC < 0.6). The main policy weaknesses were the coverage of the LTCI, the sources of funds, the scope of care services, and benefit eligibility. The coupling coordination degree of PPE systems varied from 0.429 to 0.921, with a mean of 0.651. Shanghai, Nantong, and Suzhou had the highest level of coordination. The coordination between subsystems of PPE in most pilot cities (12 of 14 cities) was at a basic or low level. The findings from this study concluded that the coordination within the PPE system should be improved to develop a sustainable LTCI system. To improve the coordination of the PPE system, it is suggested that the country should maintain sustainable economic growth and modify LTCI policies based on demographic transitions and economic development.

In the construction of rock tunnels, the penetration rate of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) is influenced by many factors (e.g., geomechanical parameters), some of which are highly uncertain. It is difficult to establish a precise model for predicting the penetration rate on the basis of the influencing factors. Thus, this work proposed a useful method, based on the relevance vector machine (RVM) and particle swarm optimization (PSO), for the prediction of the TBM penetration rate. In this method, the RVM played a vital role in establishing a nonlinear mapping relationship between the penetration rate and its influencing factors through training-related samples. Then, the penetration rate could be predicted using some collected data of the influencing factors. As for the PSO, it helped to find the optimum value of a key parameter (called the basis function width) that was needed in the RVM model. Subsequently, the validity of the proposed RVM-PSO method was checked with the data monitored from a rock tunnel. The results showed that the RVM-PSO method could estimate the penetration rate of the TBM, and it proved superior to the back-propagation artificial neural network, the least-squares support vector machine, and the conventional RVM methods, in terms of the prediction performance. Moreover, the proposed RVM-PSO method could be applied to identify the difference in the importance of the various factors affecting the TBM penetration rate prediction for a tunnel.

Background The Black-faced Spoonbill (Platalea minor) is a globally threatened species, nesting mainly in western Korea with smaller numbers breeding in Liaoning Province, China, and Far East Russia. Recent winter field surveys to estimate the species’ population size were almost totally conducted in coastal areas, but tracking studies showed that some individuals now winter inland. To ensure its long-term survival, we need a more comprehensive assessment of the current distribution and abundance of the species. Methods We combined the most recent count data and satellite tracking information to update existing information about the population abundance and distribution of the Black-faced Spoonbill at all stages of its annual life cycle, and how these have changed during 2004–2020. Results Black-faced Spoonbills mainly breed on the west coast of the Korean peninsula, while immature birds show a wider summer distribution throughout Yellow Sea coastal areas, when a few remain on wintering sites in the south. Combined tracking results and mid-winter counts confirmed known wintering sites on the east and south coasts of China, but showed that the species also winters on wetlands in the Yangtze River floodplain and in Southeast Asia. During 2004–2020, counts of wintering birds in coastal habitats increased from 1198 to 4864, with numbers wintering on the island of Taiwan contributing most to the overall increase. Latest counts found 5222 in 2021. We also identify key wintering and stopover sites as well as their current conservation status. Conclusions This study revised the known summering and wintering ranges of the Black-faced Spoonbill and assessed the conservation status of key sites based on a combination of field survey and satellite tracking data. We recommend prioritisation of further field research to identify and survey inland wintering areas in the Yangtze River floodplain and summering areas of immature birds. More tracking of adult individuals and birds during spring migration is necessary to fill these information gaps. We also suggest establishing a Black-faced Spoonbill monitoring platform to store, share and show real-time distribution range and population abundance data.

Background GPS/GSM tracking data were used to contrast use of (i) habitats and (ii) protected areas between three Arctic-nesting Greater White-fronted Geese (Anser albifrons, GWFG) populations throughout the annual cycle. We wished to demonstrate that the East Asian Continental Population (which winters on natural wetlands in the Chinese Yangtze River floodplain and is currently declining) avoids using farmland at multiple wintering sites. We also gathered tracking evidence to support general observations from two increasing population of GWFG, the North Sea-Baltic (which winters in Europe) and the West Pacific (which winter in Korea and Japan) winter mostly within farmland landscapes, using wetlands only for safe night roosts. Methods We tracked 156 GWFG throughout their annual cycle using GPS/GSM transmitters from these three populations to determine migration routes and stopover staging patterns. We used Brownian Bridge Movement Models to generate summer, winter and migration stopover home ranges which we then overlaid in GIS with land cover and protected area boundary at national level to determine habitat use and degree of protection from nature conservation designated areas. Results Data confirmed that 73% of European wintering GWFG homes ranges were from within farmland, compared to 59% in Japan and Korea, but just 5% in China, confirming the heavy winter use of agricultural landscapes by GWFG away from China, and avoidance of farmland at multiple sites within the Yangtze River floodplain. The same GWFG used farmland in northeast China in spring and autumn, confirming their experience of exploiting such habitats at other stages of their annual cycle. Chinese wintering birds showed the greatest overlap with protected areas of all three populations, showing current levels of site safeguard are failing to protect this population. Conclusions Results confirm the need for strategic planning to protect the East Asian Continental GWFG population. While the site protection network in place to protect the species seems adequate, it has failed to stop the declines. Buffalo grazing could serve as one simple strategy to improve the condition of feeding habitats at Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake in the Yangtze, where vast Carex meadows exist. In addition, while we warn against pushing GWFG to winter farmland feeding in China because of the long-term potential to conflict with agricultural interests, we recommend experimental sacrificial, disturbance-free farmland within designated refuge areas adjacent to the Yangtze River floodplain wetland reserves as a manipulative experiment to improve the conservation status of this population in years when natural food sources are limited.

BackgroundThe Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) occurs throughout Eurasia and North and sub-Saharan Africa, with three recognized subspecies and six geographically distributed populations. However, in China, we knew almost nothing about migration routes, habitat use and effectiveness of current site protection measures for this species.MethodsWe deployed Global Positioning System/Global System for Mobile Communications (GPS/GSM) satellite trackers on 29 Eurasian Spoonbills captured in summer in Mongolia and northeastern China, to obtain complete migration routes data from 10 individuals from 19 complete migration episodes.ResultsTracking data showed no geographical overlap during the annual cycle in Eurasian Spoonbills marked in the two main summering areas. Birds marked in the Naoli River Basin in Heilongjiang Province, China, wintered along the Jiangsu coastline in China, while Eurasian Spoonbills from two discrete summering areas (in Inner and western Mongolia) overwintered inland in the Yangtze River floodplain of China. Excluding the single Inner Mongolian bird, spring migration was significantly faster than autumn migration in the other two groups of birds. Eurasian Spoonbills mainly used water, wetland and grassland habitats in summer, but almost exclusively water in winter. Lack of protection of staging sites used by all the birds in spring and poor levels of protection throughout the annual cycle for western Mongolian birds (5–22%) gives considerable cause for concern, although sites used in other time by East Mongolian and Naoli River birds in the rest of their annual life cycle enjoyed good levels of protection (49–95%).ConclusionsThese results revealed previously unknown relationships between summering and wintering areas, migration routes and stopover sites for Eurasian Spoonbills wintering in China, suggesting the existence of discrete biogeographical population units. They also identified winter habitat use of Eurasian Spoonbills in China, confirming open water habitats as being critical throughout the annual cycle, although based on small sample size, gaps in current site safeguard networks for these populations.

Obesity is generally considered an undesirable risk factor for cardiovascular disease; however, obese subjects with heart failure paradoxically can have better outcomes than their lean counterparts. This study aimed to investigate this characteristic in an elderly Chinese population. Elderly participants (N = 414, age 77 ± 11 years, 211 males) were recruited from a Chinese community‐dwelling elderly population. Subjects were divided into 3 groups according to body mass index (BMI ≤ 25, normal; 25‐28, overweight; and ≥28, obese). Arterial stiffness was assessed by brachial‐ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), and the atherosclerosis status was evaluated with the ankle brachial index (ABI). Brachial systolic blood pressure (BSBP) was significantly higher as BMI increased (135 ± 18.4, 138 ± 18.3, 147 ± 17.6 mm Hg; P = .003) adjusted for age, sex, and heart rate. However, baPWV was significantly lower as BMI increased (baPWV 1830 ± 18, 1793 ± 25, 1704 ± 36 cm/s; P = .008) in the three groups, even with additional adjustment for BSBP. BMI showed a significant negative correlation with baPWV (r = −.170, P = .001) after adjusting for confounding factors. It is highly desirable to develop biodegradable UV-shielding materials from the renewable resources as the ever-increasing demand for the sustainable environment. In this work, TiO2 decorated lignin particles (TiO2@lignin) were synthesized successfully by hydrothermal method in aqueous solution to improve the UV shielding performance of lignin particles. The poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) composite films (thickness of ~23 μm) with different contents of TiO2@lignin were prepared via a blade-casting method. Morphological analysis showed that the TiO2@lignin dispersed uniformly in the PPC matrix with a good miscibility. UV–vis transmission spectra results revealed that the PPC composite film containing 5 wt% TiO2@lignin could absorb about 90% of UV light in the full UV band (200–400 nm), indicating the TiO2@lignin had a good UV-shielding property. Moreover, the presence of TiO2@lignin could significantly improve the thermal stability of the PPC/TiO2@lignin composite films. The DMA results showed that the introduction of TiO2@lignin could enhance the storage modulus and glass transition temperature simultaneously.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of long-term care insurance (LTCI) on medical utilization and expenditures in Jingmen, a pilot city of China. The propensity score matching-difference in difference (PSM-DID) approach was employed to examine the expenses and frequency of inpatient and outpatient services before and after the implementation of the LTCI based on the 2015–2018 panel data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The results showed that the annual expenditure and frequency of the inpatient services of Jingmen residents were reduced by 1923 Yuan (287.0 USD) and 0.24 times, respectively. The impact of the LTCI varied between urban and rural areas. The annual expenditure and frequency of inpatient services in rural areas were reduced by 1600 Yuan (238.8 USD) and 0.30 times, which were lower than those (3400 Yuan (507.5 USD) and 0.20 times) in urban areas. The monthly outpatient expenses and frequency in rural areas were reduced by 300 Yuan (44.8 USD) and 0.14 times, but increased by 555 Yuan (82.8 USD) and 0.07 times in urban area. The findings indicated that the implementation of the LTCI can reduce the medical utilization and expenses, and it had a greater effect in rural areas than in urban areas. It is suggested to promote the LTCI nationwide, and more policy preference should be given to the development of the LTCI in rural areas.

The PD1/PDL1 status of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) reflects immune function. However, the previously reported methods for evaluating this status are complex and may not be widely used in clinical practice. In addition, these studies did not introduce healthy controls to designate the cut-off when evaluating the prognostic value of the status. In this study, we retrospectively evaluated the PD1/PDL1 status in TILs of 24 DLBCL tissue samples and normal immune cells in 61 demographically matched healthy controls (tissue samples from patients with reactive hyperplasia [RH]) by flow cytometry. We investigated the prognostic value of the PD1/PDL1 status in TILs by precisely determining the cut-off value and assessing the reliability of flow cytometry. The mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) of PD1 in TIL-T-cells (TIL-Ts; median, 110) and CD8+TIL-Ts (median, 64) was significantly higher than that of CD3+T-cells (median, 64) and CD8+ T-cells (median, 34) in RH. The cut-off values of PD1/PDL1 status for analyzing prognostic values were defined considering the PD1/PDL1 status of samples from both patients with DLBCL and healthy controls. High MFI of PD1 in TIL-Ts (MFI >108, P = 0.022), high proportion of PD1+CD4+TIL-Ts (>1.1% of CD4+TIL-Ts, P = 0.049), high proportion of PD1+CD8+TIL-Ts (>2% of CD8+TIL-Ts, P = 0.025), and high MFI of PDL1 in TIL-Ts (MFI >83, P = 0.023) were risk factors for inferior prognosis of DLBCL. Our results indicate that flow cytometry is a reliable and convenient method for evaluating the immune-checkpoint status of TILs, which probably holds major implications in clinical practice.

Background The Bar-headed Goose (Anser indicus) breeds across the high plains and plateau of Central Asia and winters in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Indian sub-continent. Of the two recognized discrete flyways of the Bar-headed Goose, the Eastern Tibetan Flyway (ETF) is the larger, comprising at least six migration routes. However, we remain ignorant about their migratory connectivity, habitat use and effectiveness of site-safeguard mechanisms set in place for the species. Methods We tracked 30 ETF Bar-headed Geese from Chinese and Mongolian breeding areas to their wintering grounds using GPS/GSM transmitters, to determine their migration routes and stopover staging patterns within the QTP, overlaying these upon GIS layers of protected area status and habitat type, to model their habitat selection. Results In total, 14 tagged Bar-headed Geese provided information on their entire autumn migration and 4 geese on their entire spring migration. Qinghai Lake marked birds overwintered in the QTP (n = 2), geese tagged in Mongolia wintered either in the QTP (n = 3) or in India/Bangladesh (n = 9), representing three of the migration routes within the ETF. In total, tagged birds staged at 79 different stopover sites within QTP in autumn and 23 in spring, of which 65% (autumn) and 59% (spring) of all fixes fell within the boundaries of either National Nature Reserves (NNRs) or Important Birds Areas (IBAs) in the QTP. Bar-headed Geese predominantly occurred on four land-cover types: grassland (mostly by day), water bodies (at night), wetlands and bare substrates (salt flats, dry lake/river substrates and plough) with little change in proportion. Generalized linear mixed models comparing presence with pseudo-absence data suggested geese strongly selected for wetlands as staging habitat, avoiding bare substrates in spring. Conclusions Based on our limited observations of these tagged geese, this study is the first to show that the current designated National Nature Reserves in place in the staging areas within the QTP appear adequate to protect this increasing population. In addition, Hala Lake in Qinghai Province and adjacent areas used as initial QTP staging during autumn migration (currently outside of designated as NNRs/IBAs) are recommended for protection, based on their use by tagged birds from this study. Habitat modelling confirmed the importance of natural wetlands as feeding areas and safe areas of open water as roosting places.

Tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) account for a large proportion of tumour microenvironment (TME) in angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma (AITL), and at present the significance of TIL in TME of AITL remains unclear. Overall, 50 de novo AITL patients undergoing lymph node flow cytometry from 2014 to 2019 were retrospectively analysed to assess the relationship between TILs and AITL prognosis. We found that high TIL-Bs (≥ 42.4%, p = 0.004) and high CD4:CD8 (≥ 0.85, p = 0.024) were independent favourable prognostic factors for de novo AITL in univariate or multivariate analyses. New TIL-related risk stratification was established based on TIL-Bs and CD4:CD8 factors. Patients in the low-risk group (TIL-Bs ≥ 42.4% and CD4:CD8 ≥ 0.85) had significantly better overall survival than the high-risk (TIL-Bs

NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4) and the NOX4-related redox signaling are implicated in cardiac hypertrophy. NOX4 is interrelated with endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS). Spliced X-box binding protein 1 (Xbp1s) is a key mediator of ERS while its role in cardiac hypertrophy is still poorly understood. Recently, receptor interacting protein kinase 1(RIPK1) has been increasingly reported to be associated with ERS. Therefore, we aimed to test the hypothesis that Xbp1s mediates NOX4-triggered cardiac hypertrophy via RIPK1 signaling. In the heart tissue of transverse aortic constriction (TAC) rats and in primary cultured neonatal cardiomyocytes(NCMs) treated with angiotensinII(AngII) or isoproterenol (ISO), NOX4 expression and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and expression of Xbp1s as well as RIPK1-related phosphorylation of P65 subunit of NF-κB were elevated. Gene silencing of NOX4 by specific small interfering RNA (siRNA) significantly blocked the upregulation of NOX4, generation of ROS, splicing of Xbp1 and activation of the RIPK1-related NF-κB signaling, meanwhile attenuated cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. In addition, ROS scavenger (N-acetyl-L-cysteine, NAC) and NOX4 inhibitor GKT137831 reduced ROS generation and alleviated activation of Xbp1 and RIPK1-related NF-κB signaling. Furthermore, splicing of Xbp1 was responsible for the increase in RIPK1 expression in AngII or ISO-treated NCMs. Upregulated RIPK1 in turn activates NF-κB signaling in a kinase activity-independent manner. These findings suggest that Xbp1s plays an important role in NOX4-triggered cardiomyocyte hypertrophy via activating its downstream effector RIPK1, which may prove significant for the development of future therapeutic strategies.

Background: Migration theory suggests, and some empirical studies show, that in order to compete for the bestbreeding sites and increase reproductive success, long-distance avian migrants tend to adopt a time minimizationstrategy during spring migration, resulting in shorter duration spring migration compared to that in autumn.Methods: Using GPS/GSM transmitters, we tracked the full migrations of 11 Greater White-fronted Geese (Anseralbifrons) between southeast China and the Russian Arctic, to reveal the migration timing and routes of the East Asianpopulation, and compare the difference in duration between spring and autumn migration of this population.Results: We found that migration in spring (79 ± 12 days) took more than twice as long to cover the same distanceas in autumn (35 ± 7 days). This difference in migration duration was mainly determined by significantly more timespent in spring (59 ± 16 days) than in autumn (23 ± 6 days) at significantly more stopover sites.Conclusions: We suggest that these geese, thought to be partial capital breeders, spent almost three quartersof total migration time at spring stopover sites to acquire energy stores for ultimate investment in reproduction,although we cannot reject the hypothesis that timing of the spring thaw also contributed to stopover duration. Inautumn, they acquired necessary energy stores on the breeding grounds sufficient to reach Northeast China stagingareas almost without stop, which reduced stopover times in autumn and resulted in the faster autumn migration thanspring.

Background Extranodal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTL-N) is an aggressive lymphoma typically diagnosed by examining small biopsy specimens. Flow cytometry is very valuable for the diagnosis and classification of several kinds of hematolymphoid neoplasms but has not been widely used for diagnosing ENKTL-N. Methods We systematically investigated the flow cytometry characteristics of 26 solid tissue biopsy specimens of ENKTL-N at initial diagnosis and compared the results with those from reactive NK-cells in the nasal/nasopharyngeal region and peripheral blood. Results Our study revealed seven flow cytometry (FCM)-based characteristics for distinguishing between the neoplastic cells and reactive NK-cells, including (1) the proportion of NK-cells among total lymphocytes >10%; (2) forward scatter >105 ; (3) mean fluorescence intensity of CD56 > 5,000; (4) aberrant antigen expression or loss; (5) skewed killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor repertoire; (6) homogenously positive for CD38; and (7) positive for CD30 or CD336. FCM-based immunophenotyping is a potentially feasible and convenient approach for discriminating cellular lineages, evaluating the activation status of NK-cells, and selecting potential therapy targets of ENKTL-N. Conclusions Flow cytometry is very valuable for facilitating routine diagnosis, confirming clonality, predicting the cellular lineage, and guiding individual treatment for ENKTL-N. © 2019 International Clinical Cytometry Society.

The prognostic value of tumour-infiltrating T lymphocytes (TIL-Ts) has been demonstrated in many solid tumours but remained unclear in diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). We conducted a retrospective cohort study reviewing the TIL-Ts proportion and CD4:CD8 of 66 de novo DLBCL by flow cytometry to construct a risk stratification based on TIL-Ts-related prognostic factors. In univariate analysis, low TIL-Ts ( 14%) was significantly related to shorter survival (HR = 2.58, 95% CI 1.11-5.99, p = 0.028). In multivariate analysis, low TIL-Ts (HR = 6.48, 95% CI 2.16-19.46, p = 0.001) and high CD4:CD8 ( 1.2) (HR = 4.22, 95% CI 1.43-12.35, p = 0.009) were independent risk factors. For the risk stratification, three groups were defined based on TIL-Ts-related risk factors: low-risk group (high TIL-Ts and low CD4:CD8), intermediate risk group (low TIL-Ts, low CD4:CD8 or high TIL-Ts, high CD4:CD8) and high-risk group (low TIL-Ts and high CD4:CD8). The patients in high-risk group have significantly shorter survival than that in intermediate risk group (p = 0.025) and low-risk group (p = 0.002). This new risk stratification which is independent of performance status and age of the patients could hint the prognosis and may guide treatment of DLBCL.

Epoxy–SiO2 polymers modified by poly(dimethylsiloxane) hydroxyl terminated (PDMS-OH) were presented in this paper in order to evaluate their potential use as protective agents for stone surface. No volatile organic components were employed in this synthesis route which was environmentally friendly. FTIR, TG-DSC, SEM and AFM techniques were used to investigate the effect of adding PDMS-OH to (3-glycidyloxypropyl)-methyldiethoxysilane (GPTMS) and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (ATS), which leaded to epoxy–SiO2–PDMS-OH materials. The addition of PDMS-OH into GPTMS and ATS accelerated the curing process and increased the viscosity of sol. It was found that PDMS-OH was chemically incorporated into the polymer matrix via Si O Si bonds by FTIR analysis. Furthermore, an appreciable reduction of microcracks was obtained for epoxy–SiO2–PDMS-OH polymers when adding 30% w/w of PDMS-OH. The effectiveness of the epoxy–SiO2–PDMS-OH polymers synthesized as stone protective agents was evaluated.

To study the feasibility of human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) combined with small intestinal submucosa powder (SISP)/chitosan chloride (CSCl)-β-glycerol phosphate disodium (GP)-hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) for adipose tissue engineering.hADSCs were isolated from human breast fat with collagenase type I digestion, and the third passage hADSCs were mixed with SISP/CSCl-GP-HEC at a density of 1 x 10(6) cells/mL. Twenty-four healthy female nude mice of 5 weeks old were randomly divided into experimental group (n = 12) and control group (n=12), and the mice were subcutaneously injected with 1 mL hADSCs+SISP/CSCl-GP-HEC or SISP/CSCl-GP-HEC respectively at the neck. The degradation rate was evaluated by implant volume measurement at 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks. Three mice were euthanized at 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks respectively for general, histological, and immunohistochemical observations. The ability of adipogenesis (Oil O staining), angiopoiesis (CD31), and localized the hADSCs (immunostaining for human Vimentin) were identified.The volume of implants of both groups decreased with time, but it was greater in experimental group than the control group, showing significant difference at 8 weeks (t = 3.348, P = 0.029). The general observation showed that the border of implants was clear with no adhesion at each time point; fat-liked new tissues were observed with capillaries on the surface at 8 weeks in 2 groups. The histological examinations showed that the structure of implants got compact gradually after injection, and SISP gradually degraded with slower degradation speed in experimental group; adipose tissue began to form, and some mature adipose tissue was observed at 8 weeks in the experimental group. The Oil O staining positive area of experimental group was greater than that of the control group at each time point, showing significant difference at 8 weeks (t = 3.41 1, P = 0.027). Immunohistochemical staining for Vemintin showed that hADSCs could survive at each time point in the experimental group; angiogenesis was most remarkable at 2 weeks, showing no significant differences in CD31 possitive area between 2 groups (P0.05), but angiogenesis was more homogeneous in experimental group.SISP/CSCl-GP-HEC can use as scaffolds for hADSCs to reconstruct tissue engineered adipose.
