Serum amyloid P component (SAP) is a universal constituent of human amyloid deposits, which has been implicated in Alzheimer's disease and major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the relationship between SAP level and depression severity remains obscure. The aims of this study were to investigate how SAP is involved in depression and to explore the association between SAP level and antidepressant treatment response. Patients with MDD (n = 85) who received escitalopram monotherapy for 8-12 weeks were selected from a multicenter open-label randomized clinical trial. The same number of healthy controls was recruited. Depression severity was measured according to the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) at baseline and weeks 4, 8, and 12. The plasma levels of SAP were measured at baseline, week 2 and week 12. As a result, baseline levels of SAP were significantly higher in depressed patients than in control subjects (p 0.001). SAP levels at baseline were negatively associated with depression severity after escitalopram treatment (p 0.05), and the changes in SAP levels from baseline to week 12 were highly correlated with the severity of depressive symptoms based on the HAMD-17 score (p 0.05). Interestingly, treatment with escitalopram significantly decreased the plasma levels of SAP in females, but not in males. Altogether, our results suggest that SAP not only involved in the pathobiology of depression but also mediates the action of antidepressant medications.

Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) imposes a heavy global disease burden. However, current etiology, diagnosis and treatment remain unsatisfactory and no previous study has resolved this problem. Building on the strengths and limitations of previous cohort studies of MDD, the prospective cohort study of depression (PROUD) is a 3-year large-scale cohort study designed to collect multidimensional data with a flexible follow-up schedule and strategy. The goal is to establish a nationally representative, high-quality, standardized depression cohort to support precise diagnosis and treatment of MDD and address the gap in current research. Methods PROUD is a patient-based, nationally representative multicenter prospective cohort study with baseline and 3-year follow-up assessments. It will be carried out from January 2022 to December 2026 in 52 qualified tertiary hospitals in China. A total of 14,000 patients diagnosed with MDD, according to the DSM-5 criteria, and aged ≥ 16 years, will be recruited to PROUD. Participants aged 18-65 years who have not received any treatment during a depressive episode will be included in the precision medicine cohort (PMC) of PROUD (n=4,000). Patients who meet the general eligibility criteria but not the PMC criteria will be included in the naturalistic observation cohort (NOC) of PROUD (n=10,000). A multiple follow-up strategy, including scheduled, remote, telephone, external visits and patient self-reports, will be implemented to collect comprehensive sociodemographic, clinical information, biospecimens, neuroimaging, cognitive function and electrophysiology data and digital phenotypes according to strict standard operating procedures implemented across centers. It will provide a comprehensive database facilitating further analyses and aiding the development of homeostatic and precision medicine in China.

Emerging evidence from animal and human studies has suggested that small microbial metabolites generated in the gut influence host mood and behavior. Our previous study reported that patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) reduced the abundance of genera Blautia and Eubacterium, the microbials critically regulating cholesterol and bile acid metabolism in the gut. In this study, we further demonstrated that the levels of plasma bile acid chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) were significantly lower in Chinese MDD patients (142) than in healthy subjects (148). Such low levels of plasma CDCA in MDD patients were rescued in remitters but not in nonremitters following antidepressant treatment. In a parallel animal study, Chronic Social Defeat Stress (CSDS) depressed mice reduced the plasma CDCA and expression level in prefrontal cortex (PFC) of bile acid receptor (FXR) protein, which is a ligand-activated transcription factor and a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily. We found that CDCA treatment restored the level of FXR in the CSDS mice, suggesting the involvement of bile acid receptors in MDD. We observed that CDCA decreased the activity of the NLRP3 inflammasome and caspase-1 and subsequently increased the levels of phosphorylation and expression of PFC glutamate receptors (GluA1) in the PFC. In addition, CDCA showed antidepressant effects in the tests of sucrose preference, tail suspension, and forced swimming in CSDS mouse model of depression. Finally, in agreement with this idea, blocking these receptors by a FXR antagonist GS abolished CDCA-induced antidepressant effect. Moreover, CDCA treatment rescued the increase of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF α and IL-17, which also were blocked by GS. These results suggest that CDCA is a biomarker and target potentially important for the diagnosis and treatment of MDD.

This study aimed to assess the equivalence between the paper and smartphone versions of the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Self-Report (QIDS-SR16) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for patients with depressive disorders in psychiatric hospitals in China.Patients and Methods: This was a randomized crossover study of 110 depressed patients recruited from the outpatient department of Beijing Anding Hospital from March 2016 to September 2018. Group 1 completed both the QIDS-SR16 and PHQ-9 in paper format and then completed the smartphone version 1– 2 h later. Group 2 completed the scales in the reverse order. Reliability was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). The expected ICC was 0.9 (α=0.05).Results: The overall ICC score of the QIDS-SR16 paper and smartphone versions was 0.904 (95% CI: 0.861– 0.934), and the ICCs of each item ranged from 0.769 to 0.923. The overall ICC score of the PHQ-9 paper and smartphone versions was 0.951 (95% CI: 0.929– 0.967), and the ICCs of each item ranged from 0.779 to 0.914.Conclusion: This study demonstrated the equivalence of the paper and smartphone versions of the PHQ-9 and QIDS-SR16 in depressed patients in China.Keywords: depressive disorder, equivalence, intraclass correlation coefficient, questionnaires, smartphone

BackgroundThis study aimed to examine the efficacy of combining paroxetine and mirtazapine v. switching to mirtazapine, for patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who have had an insufficient response to SSRI monotherapy (paroxetine) after the first 2 weeks of treatment.MethodsThis double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, three-arm study recruited participants from five hospitals in China. Eligible participants were aged 18–60 years with MDD of at least moderate severity. Participants received paroxetine during a 2-week open-label phase and patients who had not achieved early improvement were randomized to paroxetine, mirtazapine or paroxetine combined with mirtazapine for 6 weeks. The primary outcome was improvement on the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression 17-item (HAMD-17) scores 6 weeks after randomization.ResultsA total of 204 patients who showed early non-response to paroxetine monotherapy were randomly assigned to receive either mirtazapine and placebo (n = 68), paroxetine and placebo (n = 68) or mirtazapine and paroxetine (n = 68), with 164 patients completing the outcome assessment. At week 8, the least squares (LS) mean change of HAMD-17 scores did not significantly differ among the three groups, (12.98 points) in the mirtazapine group, (12.50 points) in the paroxetine group and (13.27 points) in the mirtazapine plus paroxetine combination group. Participants in the paroxetine monotherapy group were least likely to experience adverse effects.ConclusionsAfter 8 weeks follow-up, paroxetine monotherapy, mirtazapine monotherapy and paroxetine/mirtazapine combination therapy were equally effective in non-improvers at 2 weeks. The results of this trial do not support a recommendation to routinely offer additional treatment or a switch in treatment strategies for MDD patients who do not show early improvement after 2 weeks of antidepressant treatment.

All patients were followed up for 6 months after acute treatment. The following data were collected at baseline period and 1, 3, and 6 months after acute treatment: general information of patients, medication information and patient’s condition changes, brief 16-item quick inventory of depressive symptomatology self-report (QIDS-SR16), patient health questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15), quality of life enjoyment and satisfaction questionnaire-short form (Q-LES-Q-SF), Sheehan disability scale (SDS) and digit symbol substitution test (DSST).Results: During the baseline period, there was a significant difference in QIDS-SR16 between recurrent patients and first-episode patients (p < 0.05), and there was no significant difference in other indicators (p > 0.05). At one month after acute treatment, there were significant differences in the total QIDS-SR16 score, the total Q-LES-SF score, the social life score, and the family life/home responsibilities score of SDS in patients with recurrent depression and first-episode depression (p < 0.05). At three months after acute treatment, there were significant differences in the total Q-LES-SF score and social life score of SDS in patients with recurrent depression and first-episode depression (p < 0.05). At six months after acute treatment, there were significant differences in the total QIDS-SR16 score, the social life score, and the total Q-LES-SF score in patients with recurrent depression and first-episode depression (p < 0.05). Compared with that data during the baseline period, the QIDS-SR16 scores and the SDS scores of all patients decreased, and the Q-LES-SF scores of all patients gradually increased as time went on during the consolidation period.Conclusion: The recurrent patients have more severe social function impairment, depressive symptoms, and lower life quality than that of the first-episode depressed patients. Background: Schizophrenia is a complex and debilitating mental disorder with strong heritability. Its pathogenesis involves immune dysregulation. Interleukin 15 and interleukin 15 receptor alpha(IL-15Rα) are classical immune molecules. They also help maintain normal brain function, leading to our hypothesis that IL-15Rα gene(IL- 15RA) variants contribute to the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Objective: We determine whether the genetic variants of IL-15RA are associated with the development and progression of schizophrenia and whether IL-15RA single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) plays a key role in downstream signaling transduction. Methods and results: We sequenced IL-15RA exon from 132 Chinese schizophrenic patients and identified a rare variant(rs528238821) in a patient diagnosed with catatonic schizophrenia and ankylosing spondylitis(AS). We overexpressed this missense variant in cells driven by pBI-CMV vector. The cells showed attenuated STAT3 phosphorylation in response to interleukin15. Conclusion: IL-15RA mutation is rare in schizophrenic patients but interfered with IL- 15Rα intracellular signal transduction. Given the similarity of symptoms of catatonic schizophrenia and the known phenotype of IL-15Rα knockout mice, gene variation might offer diagnostic value for sub-types of schizophrenia.

Background This study aims to understand suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among transgender individuals through an in-depth analysis of a nation-wide population general survey in China. Methods Transgender Men (TM) and Women (TW) were investigated through a cross-sectional survey. A structured questionnaire was used to investigate participants' demographic information, perceived sexuality conflicts, childhood adversity and mental health conditions. Logistic regression models were utilized to investigate risk factors associated with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in these groups. We also conducted a quasi-meta-analysis in order to compare the prevalence of suicidal ideation and attempted suicide between general and transgender populations in China. Results A total of 1309 participants across 32 provinces and municipalities in China took part in this survey, out of 2060 valid questionnaires. In this transgender population, the lifetime prevalence of suicidal ideation and an attempt at suicide were 56.4% and 16.1%, respectively. This estimated prevalence rate is far greater than in Chinese community samples. For all transgender people, disliking birth-assigned sex, seeking sex reassignment surgery, having intense conflicts with parents, lifetime history of suffering from major depressive disorder, a recent episode of depression, self-harm, and seeking mental health services were significantly associated with increased risk of suicidal ideation. An education level of high school or equivalent, being married and/or separated/divorced, having intense conflicts with parents, or self-harm and seeking mental health services were all significantly associated with increased risk of suicide attempt. Although most risk factors for TM and TW were equivalent across groups, differences were observed in both suicidal ideation and suicide attempt models. Limitations The cross-sectional study design and lack of follow-up data are limitations of this study. Conclusions This is the first study to examine suicide within a Chinese transgender population. The clinical implications of these findings for Chinese mental health professionals are discussed. Also, the evidence from this study can be used to inform the practices of suicide prevention workers, and policy makers working with the transgender population.

Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent and disabling disorder that can lead to heavy individual, familial, and societal burdens. Although pharmaceutical interventions still play an essential role in therapeutic measures, limitations, including effects that are delayed for weeks, are noteworthy. Antidepressants with rapid efficacy and acceptable tolerance have been investigated for many years; rapid antidepressant effects and promising clinical applications have been obtained with intravenous and oral scopolamine. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of repeated intramuscular scopolamine as an add-on treatment to escitalopram. Methods This is a single-center, saline-controlled, double-blind, three-armed, randomized trial. Sixty-six participants diagnosed with MDD will be recruited at Beijing Anding Hospital and randomly assigned to one of three groups: a high-dose intramuscular scopolamine augmentation group; a low-dose intramuscular scopolamine augmentation group; and a placebo control group. Our primary endpoint is improvement in the 17-Item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD17) score from the baseline (at least a 20% reduction). Prespecified secondary endpoints include response rates and remission rates as well as changes in the total or subscale scores between the baseline and week 4. Discussion This study will provide the first insight regarding the rapid antidepressant efficacy and tolerability of an intramuscular scopolamine add-on to the usual treatment in Chinese MDD patients. The first discussion concerns whether augmentation can accelerate early antidepressant efficacy. A pilot study of intramuscular scopolamine is performed. The limitations of this study include its small sample size and it being a single-center study, suggesting the need for further confirmation with trials enrolling larger populations. Ethics and dissemination The study protocol and all related materials have been approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee of the Beijing Anding Hospital (No. 2016–106, Beijing, China). The findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals and at national and international conferences. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03131050. Registered on 18 April 2017. Background In the population of postmenopausal patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), the superiority of serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) over selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) has not yet been definitively proven. Consequently, a direct comparison of the efficacy of SSRIs and SNRIs in the treatment of postmenopausal depression could provide relevant data. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of venlafaxine vs. fluoxetine in the treatment of postmenopausal MDD. Methods This was an 8-week, multicenter, randomized, single-blind, active-controlled trial conducted at a psychiatric hospital (Beijing Anding Hospital) and a general hospital (Beijing Chaoyang Hospital) between April 2013 and September 2017. The primary outcome measure was improving depressive symptoms (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-24) score). The secondary outcomes included the change of HAMD-24 anxiety/somatization factor score and Clinical Global Impressions-Improvement (CGI-I) response rate. Safety was assessed by treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) and laboratory tests. Efficacy was analyzed by using the full analysis set (FAS) following the modified intention-to-treat (mITT) principle. The primary endpoint measurements were analyzed using a mixed-effect model for repeated measures (MMRM) model with patients as a random-effect factor, treatment group as the independent variable, time as a repeated measure, and baseline covariates, using a first-order ante dependence covariance matrix. Results A total of 184 women were randomized. The full analysis set (FAS) included 172 patients (venlafaxine, n = 82; fluoxetine, n = 90). Over the 8-week study period, the reduction in HAMD-24 scores was significant (P P = 0.001). The baseline-to-week-8 least-squares mean change of the anxiety/somatization factor scores, CGI-I response rate were greater in the venlafaxine group than in the fluoxetine group (all P Conclusion Venlafaxine was well tolerated and compared to fluoxetine, it led to a greater improvement in the treatment of postmenopausal MDD. This study aimed to assess the clinical phenomenology and characteristics of prodromal symptoms in Chinese patients with bipolar disorder (BPD) prior to their index mood episode.Semi-structured interviews [Bipolar Prodrome Symptom Scale-Retrospective (BPSS-R)] were administered to patients within 3 years of BPD (I and II) onset.120 stable inpatients and outpatients were included (65% males, mean age: 26.5±10.0 years). Feeling extremely energetic (61.8%), overly cheerful (49.1%), racing thoughts (48.2%), overly talkative (47.3%), and decreased need for sleep (43.6%) most frequently preceded the first (hypo)manic episode, whereas depressed mood (78.5%), tiredness (53.9%), reduction of enjoyment (52.3%), trouble concentrating (49.2%) and insomnia (47.7%) often occurred prior to the index depressive episode. The prevalence of anxiety or nervousness (p = 0.009), social isolation (p = 0.004), and losing temper (p 0.001) differed significantly depending on the different episodes. Prior to any depressive episode, insomnia (p = 0.035) lasted significantly longer and sleeping too much (p = 0.033) was more severe, whereas oppositionality (p 0.001), hallucinations (p = 0.024) and psychosis index score (p = 0.044) were more severe before any (hypo) manic episode. Furthermore, depressed mood (p = 0.006) was more frequent prior to depression, while anxiety or nervousness (p = 0.018), oppositionality (p = 0.001), and psychosis index score (p = 0.009) were more frequent before any (hypo) manic episode.Characteristic affective and psychotic symptoms, including depressed mood and subthreshold hypo (manic) symptoms occurred in the prodromal phase. The pre-depression prodromal symptoms lasted longer than the pre-(hypo) mania prodromal symptoms. Our findings indicated that identifying prodromal symptoms of BPD may be beneficial for early diagnosis and intervention before the development of full episodes.

Nowadays, Sleep disorder is a common disease, and spindle spindles are important features of the second stage non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. In this paper, we propose an improved automatic detection method of spindles based on wavelet transform. The spindles automatic detector is mainly composed of wavelet transform and clustering. We collected the electroencephalography (EEG) signals of six patients with sleep disorders all night for ten hours, and then preprocessed the data and other operations, and then used our improved method to detect the sleep EEG signals by spindles. By comparing with the previous automatic detection method not improved and another automatic detection method, the results show that the accuracy of sleep spindles detection can be effectively improved. The accuracy of the improved detector is 5.19% higher than before, and 9.7% higher than that of another method based on amplitude threshold. Finally, we made a simple comparison between people with sleep disorders and normal people. We found that there were significant differences in spindle density between people with sleep disorders and people without sleep disorders. The average spindle density in the normal population averaged 2.59 spindles per minute. People with sleep disorders had an average spindle density of 1.32 spindles per minute. In future research, our research direction is to improve the accuracy of spindles automatic detection by improving the spindles detector and study the difference of spindles between patients with sleep disorders and normal people in a large number of samples, so that the difference of spindles can be used as the basis for the diagnosis of sleep disorders.

Psychiatric disorders are severe, debilitating conditions with unknown etiology and are commonly misdiagnosed, when based solely on clinical interviews, because of overlapping symptoms and similar familial patterns. Until now, no valid and objective biomarkers have been used to diagnose and differentiate between psychiatric disorders. We compared clinically tested serum indicators in terms of inflammation (C-reactive protein, complement proteins C3 and C4, and serum Immunoglobulins A, M, and G), nutrients (homocysteine, folate, and vitamin B12), and neurohormones (adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol) in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ, n = 1659), bipolar disorder (BD, n = 1901), and major depressive disorder (MDD, n = 1521) to investigate potential biomarkers. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze the diagnostic potential of these analytes. We found that compared with MDD, serum levels of C-reactive protein, C3, C4, and homocysteine were higher in SCZ and BD groups, and folate and vitamin B12 were lower in SCZ and BD groups. In contrast with BD, adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol increased in patients with MDD. Although ROC analysis suggested that they were not able to effectively distinguish between the three, these biological indicators showed different patterns in the three disorders. As such, more specific biomarkers should be explored in the future.

Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common mental illness characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities. Using smartphones and wearable devices to monitor the mental condition of patients with MDD has been examined in several studies. However, few studies have used passively collected data to monitor mood changes over time. Objective The aim of this study is to examine the feasibility of monitoring mood status and stability of patients with MDD using machine learning models trained by passively collected data, including phone use data, sleep data, and step count data. Methods We constructed 950 data samples representing time spans during three consecutive Patient Health Questionnaire-9 assessments. Each data sample was labeled as Steady or Mood Swing, with subgroups Steady-remission, Steady-depressed, Mood Swing-drastic, and Mood Swing-moderate based on patients’ Patient Health Questionnaire-9 scores from three visits. A total of 252 features were extracted, and 4 feature selection models were applied; 6 different combinations of types of data were experimented with using 6 different machine learning models. Results A total of 334 participants with MDD were enrolled in this study. The highest average accuracy of classification between Steady and Mood Swing was 76.67% (SD 8.47%) and that of recall was 90.44% (SD 6.93%), with features from all types of data being used. Among the 6 combinations of types of data we experimented with, the overall best combination was using call logs, sleep data, step count data, and heart rate data. The accuracies of predicting between Steady-remission and Mood Swing-drastic, Steady-remission and Mood Swing-moderate, and Steady-depressed and Mood Swing-drastic were over 80%, and the accuracy of predicting between Steady-depressed and Mood Swing-moderate and the overall Steady to Mood Swing classification accuracy were over 75%. Comparing all 6 aforementioned combinations, we found that the overall prediction accuracies between Steady-remission and Mood Swing (drastic and moderate) are better than those between Steady-depressed and Mood Swing (drastic and moderate). Conclusions Our proposed method could be used to monitor mood changes in patients with MDD with promising accuracy by using passively collected data, which can be used as a reference by doctors for adjusting treatment plans or for warning patients and their guardians of a relapse. Using smartphones and wearable devices to monitor the mental condition of patients with MDD has been examined in several studies. However, few studies have used passively collected data to monitor mood changes over time. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to examine the feasibility of monitoring mood status and stability of patients with MDD using machine learning models trained by passively collected data, including phone use data, sleep data, and step count data. METHODS We constructed 950 data samples representing time spans during three consecutive Patient Health Questionnaire-9 assessments. Each data sample was labeled as Steady or Mood Swing, with subgroups Steady-remission, Steady-depressed, Mood Swing-drastic, and Mood Swing-moderate based on patients’ Patient Health Questionnaire-9 scores from three visits. A total of 252 features were extracted, and 4 feature selection models were applied; 6 different combinations of types of data were experimented with using 6 different machine learning models. RESULTS A total of 334 participants with MDD were enrolled in this study. The highest average accuracy of classification between Steady and Mood Swing was 76.67% (SD 8.47%) and that of recall was 90.44% (SD 6.93%), with features from all types of data being used. Among the 6 combinations of types of data we experimented with, the overall best combination was using call logs, sleep data, step count data, and heart rate data. The accuracies of predicting between Steady-remission and Mood Swing-drastic, Steady-remission and Mood Swing-moderate, and Steady-depressed and Mood Swing-drastic were over 80%, and the accuracy of predicting between Steady-depressed and Mood Swing-moderate and the overall Steady to Mood Swing classification accuracy were over 75%. Comparing all 6 aforementioned combinations, we found that the overall prediction accuracies between Steady-remission and Mood Swing (drastic and moderate) are better than those between Steady-depressed and Mood Swing (drastic and moderate). CONCLUSIONS Our proposed method could be used to monitor mood changes in patients with MDD with promising accuracy by using passively collected data, which can be used as a reference by doctors for adjusting treatment plans or for warning patients and their guardians of a relapse. Introduction: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common affective disorder. Currently established pharmacotherapies lack rapid clinical response, thereby limiting their ability to bring instant relief to patients. A series of clinical trials has demonstrated the antidepressant effects of scopolamine, yet few have studied the effects of add-on scopolamine to currently available antidepressants. It is not known whether conventional antidepressant treatment with a 3-day scopolamine injection could speed up oral antidepressant efficacy. The main focus of this study is to detect the capacity of the rapid-onset efficacy of such a treatment option. Methods and analysis: This study consisted of a single-centre, double-blind, three-arm randomized trial with a 4-week follow-up period. Sixty-six participants meeting entry criteria were randomly allocated to three treatment groups: a high-dose group, a low-dose group and a placebo control group. Psychiatric rating scales were administered at baseline and seven viewing points following the administration of intramuscular injections. The primary outcome measure was length of time from randomization (baseline) to early improvement. Results: Both primary and secondary outcome measures consistently showed no differences among the three groups. The cumulative response rate and the remission rate were 72.7% (48/66) and 47.0% (31/66). Intramuscular scopolamine treatment was relatively well tolerated. Two subjects with high-dose injections dropped out because of a drug-related side effect. Conclusion: Contrary to our prediction, we found that, compared to placebo (0.9% saline i.m.), scopolamine was not associated with a significantly faster antidepressant response rate. This study compared residual depressive and somatic symptoms and functional impairment between remitted and partially remitted patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), and explored the associations of functioning with demographic and clinical characteristics including residual depressive symptoms. Altogether, 1503 outpatients with MDD formed the study sample. Residual symptoms and psychosocial functioning were measured using standardized instruments. Approximately half (51.2%) of the patients who responded to antidepressant treatment achieved remission ('remitters'), while the rest who responded to treatment achieved only partial remission ('non-remitters'). Residual mood symptoms in remitters included sleep disturbances (66.6%), fatigue (32.3%), decreased concentration (31.3%), appetite/weight disturbances (28.8%), psychomotor changes (23.2%), sad mood (21.9%) and loss of interest (21.1%) measured by the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Self-Report. Residual somatic symptoms included headache (31.9%), intestinal complaints (31.3%), heart pounding/racing (26.3%), gastric complaints (22.3%), dizziness (22.2%) and stomach pain (20.6%) measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire-15. Such residual symptoms were even more frequent in the 'non-remitters' group. Residual symptoms of fatigue, psychomotor changes, sleep disturbance and appetite/weight disturbance contributed to impairment of all functional domains. Given the negative impact of residual symptoms on psychosocial functioning, more attention needs to be paid to the assessment and treatment of residual depressive symptoms.

This survey study assesses the rates of abuse, neglect, and bullying experienced at home or in school by transgender and gender-nonbinary adolescents in China and the associations of these experiences with mental health., Key Points Question What are the rates of abuse, neglect, and bullying and their association with poor mental health experienced by Chinese transgender and gender nonbinary adolescents? Findings In this national survey study of 385 transgender and gender-nonbinary adolescents, 296 respondents reported experiencing parental abuse or neglect and 295 respondents reported experiencing abuse or bullying from classmates or teachers. Reporting experiences of bullying or abuse from classmates or teachers was significantly associated with increased risk of suicidal ideation. Meaning Greater access to appropriate mental health care may be helpful to address the high rates of mental health issues and abuse, neglect, and bullying experienced by Chinese transgender and gender-nonbinary adolescents., Importance This is the first comprehensive national study reporting the rates of abuse, neglect, and bullying from family and classmates or teachers among Chinese transgender and gender-nonbinary adolescents and identifying risk factors associated with poor mental health in this population. Objective To assess the rates of abuse, neglect, and bullying and their association with poor mental health among Chinese transgender and gender nonbinary adolescents. Design, Setting, and Participants This national survey study used an online self-selecting survey conducted between January 1, 2017, and September 29, 2017, in China. Eligibility criteria included reporting being aged 12 to 18 years and being transgender or gender nonbinary. Data analysis was performed from March 25 to 28, 2019. Main Outcomes and Measures The main outcome was self-reported poor mental health, including depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and suicidal ideation. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression 9-item scale. Anxiety symptoms were measured using the 7-item General Anxiety Disorder scale. Suicidal ideation was measured using standardized questions adapted from previous Chinese studies. Abuse, neglect, and bullying were measured using specifically designed questions. Results Of 564 responses collected, 385 respondents (mean [SD] age, 16.7 [1.2] years) met inclusion criteria, including 109 (28.3%) transgender adolescent boys, 167 (43.4%) transgender adolescent girls, and 109 (28.3%) gender-nonbinary adolescents. Among 319 respondents who reported that their parents were aware of their gender identity, 296 (92.8%) reported having experienced parental abuse or neglect. Among the full cohort, 295 respondents (76.6%) reported having experienced abuse or bullying owing to being transgender or gender nonbinary in school from classmates or teachers. There were 173 respondents (44.9%) with Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression 9-item scale scores indicating they were at risk of major depressive disorder, and 148 respondents (38.4%) had 7-item General Anxiety Disorder scale scores indicating they were at risk of an anxiety disorder. In univariate analysis, reporting experiences of bullying from a classmate or teacher was significantly associated with suicidal ideation (odds ratio, 1.68 [95% CI, 1.04-2.70]; P = .03), but the association was no longer statistically significant after controlling for level of educational attainment, aversion to assigned sex, and depressed mood at the onset of puberty (odds ratio, 1.63 [95% CI, 0.97-2.73]; P = .06). Conclusions and Relevance In this survey study, transgender and gender-nonbinary adolescents in China reported high rates of abuse, neglect, and bullying at home and in school and high rates of symptoms associated with poor mental health. This study highlights the importance of reducing home- and school-based abuse, neglect, and bullying of transgender and gender-nonbinary adolescents in China to improve mental health outcomes; however, broader change in the social environment may be required to address the prejudice and stigma aimed at gender minorities.

Age differences exist in many aspects in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The present study aims to examine the effect of age on treatment outcomes in first-episode MDD.A total of 982 first-episode major depressive patients, who were above 18 years old and admitted in both psychiatric hospitals and units of general hospitals were recruited for the present study. These patients were newly treated and responded to 8-12 weeks of antidepressant treatment. Depressive symptoms, psychosocial functioning and quality of life were measured using standardized instruments. The study population was divided into three age groups: early adult (18-44 years old), middle adult (45-59 years old), and late adult (60-85 years old).Earlier age was associated with greater symptom severity, severer depressive symptoms in hypersomnia, concentration/decision making, negative view of the self, suicide ideation and restlessness, more impaired function, poorer satisfaction in social relationship and economic status, when compared to late adults with MDD (all P 0.05). In the multivariable analyses, among the other variables, early age remained as an independent correlation of residual depressive severity (middle age vs. early age: OR = 0.631, 95%CI[0.462, 0.862]; old age vs. early age: OR = 0.521, 95%CI[0.348, 0.780]) and functional impairment. Comorbidity of physical illness had a negative contribution to all treatment outcomes.In first major depressive episode, early age was strongly associated with depressive severity and functional impairment after responding to antidepressant treatment. Early-life depression may be an indicator of MDD for poor clinical outcomes and high clinical burden.

Brain-Computer Interface(BCI) refers to devices that allow people to communicate or control the outside devices only through brain waves without relying on their own output pathways, such as the human nervous system and muscle tissue. The problem of insufficient information transfer and interaction between organism and electromechanical device in electromechanical integration system is pointed out. This paper uses BP(Brain Products) equipment to collect Steady State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) signals. The collected SSVEP signals were preprocessed, feature extracted and feature classified. Then it is connected with the robot arm to build a portable brain-computer interface control system. Six subjects participated in the online experiment of the system. Experimental results show that the system can write some simple Chinese characters with high accuracy, and the system is feasible and effective. Then the signal is taken by Open Brain-computer Interface (OpenBCI) to complete the connection with the robotic arm. We will realize the control of the robotic arm in the later experiment. Our research aim is to find an relatively effective control method by comparing BP and OpenBCI based control on the robotic arm.

A novel aminoakyldisiloxane compound, (3-(N,N-dimethylamino)diethoxypropyl) pentamethyldisiloxane (DSON), is reported as an effective electrolyte additive for improving the electrochemical performances of high energy density power batteries of nickel-rich LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM622)/graphite. The NCM622/graphite cells using DSON addition in the carbonate-based reference electrolyte exhibit enhanced electrochemical performances, especially high temperature performances including long cycle life and high temperature storage. The pouch cell (1 Ah) with 0.2 wt% DSON retained a capacity of 88% as compared with 84% for that without DSON in electrolyte after 200 cycles at 45 °C. The mechanism investigation reveals that DSON acts as a film-forming additive for constructing uniform conductive cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer upon NCM622 particles, which suppresses the internal cracks and prohibits the irreversible phase transformation of NCM622. DSON also serves as an effective water/acid scavenger and inhibits the hydrolysis of LiPF6, thus effectively blocking the occurrence of side reactions and the dissolution of transition metal ions from cathode. Therefore, NCM622 cathode sheet maintains a better integrity surface morphology after 100 cycles. This work demonstrates that aminoakyldisiloxane is promising for practical use as effective electrolyte additive for high energy density power batteries of nickel-rich NCM/graphite.
