Abstract Non-Hermitian physics has emerged as a new paradigm that profoundly changes our understanding of non-equilibrium systems, introducing novel concepts such as exceptional points, spectral topology, and non-Hermitian skin effects (NHSEs). Most existing studies focus on non-Hermitian eigenstates, whereas dynamic properties have been discussed only recently, and the dynamic NHSEs are not yet confirmed in experiments. Here, we report the experimental observation of non-Hermitian skin dynamics using tunable one-dimensional nonreciprocal double-chain mechanical systems with glide-time symmetry. Remarkably, dynamic NHSEs are observed with various behaviors in different dynamic phases, which can be understood via the generalized Brillouin zone and the related concepts. Moreover, the observed dynamic NHSEs, amplifications, bulk unidirectional wave propagation, and boundary wave trapping provide promising ways to manipulate waves in a controllable and robust way. Our findings open a new pathway toward non-Hermitian dynamics, which will fertilize the study of non-equilibrium phases of matter.

Intersections are crucial and high-risk areas in urban road networks due to dense traffic and complex scenarios. Deploying Roadside Units (RSUs) can enhance safety and efficiency by providing real-time traffic information. However, the impact of traffic accident risks on RSU deployment is largely ignored. This study introduces an innovative RSU deployment strategy that prioritizes the risk of traffic accidents at intersections. The approach begins with analyzing environmental conditions, traffic patterns, and historical accident data at target intersections to identify key risk dimensions: road, accident, and environmental. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Entropy Weight Method (EWM) are used to weigh the indicators to evaluate their importance in accident risk assessment. Then, construct an objective function based on the accident risk value of the intersection. To overcome the redundancy problem in risk assessment, this study proposes an improved 0-1 knapsack algorithm that considers the redundancy of intersection accident risk to determine the optimal deployment location of RSUs. Simulations with SUMO, TraCI, Veins, and OMNeT++ demonstrate the algorithm’s superiority over traditional methods in all metrics. The results show that the vehicle coverage of this strategy is on average 2.63% and 2.86% higher than that of the IIA-ORD and UDA algorithms, respectively. It also leads by about 5.04% in traffic accident coverage and 5.72% in accident risk coverage. This intersection-focused RSU deployment method ensures timely information dissemination after incidents, providing valuable insights and practical guidelines for improving urban intersection safety and efficiency.

Abstract In Hermitian topological systems, topological modes (TMs) are bound to interfaces or defects of a lattice. Recent discoveries show that non-Hermitian effects can reshape the wavefunctions of the TMs and even turn them into extended modes occupying the entire bulk lattice. In this letter, we experimentally demonstrate such an extended TM (ETM) in a one-dimensional (1D) non-Hermitian acoustic topological crystal. The acoustic crystal is formed by a series of coupled acoustic resonant cavities, and the non-Hermiticity is introduced as a non-reciprocal coupling coefficient using active electroacoustic controllers (AECs). Our work highlights the potential universality of ETMs in different physical systems and resolves the technical challenges in the further study of ETMs in acoustic waves.

Abstract To avoid the problem of the traditional methods consuming large computational resources to calculate the kernel matrix and 2D discrete convolution, we present a novel approach for 3D gravity and magnetic modelling. This method combines the midpoint quadrature method with a 2D fast Fourier transform (FFT) to calculate the gravity and magnetic anomalies with arbitrary density or magnetic susceptibility distribution. In this scheme, we apply the midpoint quadrature method to calculate the volume element of the integral. Then, the convolution of the weight coefficient matrix with density or magnetization is efficiently computed via the 2D FFT. Finally, the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm are validated by using an artificial model and a real topography model. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm’s computation time and the memory requirement are decreased by approximately two orders of magnitude compared with the space-wavenumber domain method.

Abstract Satellite observations covering the last four decades reveal an ocean warming pattern resembling the negative phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. This pattern has therefore been widely interpreted as a manifestation of natural climate variability. Here, we re-examine the observed warming pattern and find that the predominant warming over the subtropical oceans, while mild warming or even cooling over the subpolar ocean, is dynamically consistent with the convergence and divergence of surface water. By comparison of observations, paleo-reconstructions, and model simulations, we propose that the observed warming pattern is likely a short-term transient response to the increased CO2 forcing, which only emerges during the early stage of anthropogenic warming. On centennial to millennial timescales, the subpolar ocean warming is expected to exceed the temporally dominant warming of the subtropical ocean. This delayed but amplified subpolar ocean warming has the potential to reshape the ocean-atmosphere circulation and threaten the stability of marine-terminating ice sheets.

Abstract Intense debate persists about the timing and magnitude of the wet phases in the East Asia deserts since the late Pleistocene. Here we show reconstructions of the paleohydrology of the East Gobi Desert since the last interglacial using satellite images and digital elevation models (DEM) combined with detailed section analyses. Paleolakes with a total area of 15,500 km2 during Marine Isotope Stage 5 (MIS 5) were identified. This expanded lake system was likely coupled to an 800–1000 km northward expansion of the humid region in East China, associated with much warmer winters. Humid climate across the Gobi Desert during MIS 5 likely resulted in a dustier MIS 4 over East Asia and the North Pacific. A second wet period characterized by an expanded, albeit smaller, lake area is dated to the mid-Holocene. Our results suggest that the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) might have been much weaker during MIS 3.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most prevalent dementia in the world. Wearable technology has been useful in the computer-aided diagnosis and long-term monitoring of PD in recent years. The fundamental issue remains how to assess the severity of PD using wearable devices in an efficient and accurate manner. However, in the real-world free-living environment, there are two difficult issues, poor annotation and class imbalance, both of which could potentially impede the automatic assessment of PD. To address these challenges, we propose a novel framework for assessing the severity of PD patient’s in a free-living environment. Specifically, we use clustering methods to learn latent categories from the same activities, while latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic models are utilized to capture latent features from multiple activities. Then, to mitigate the impact of data imbalance, we augment bag-level data while retaining key instance prototypes. To comprehensively demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed framework, we collected a dataset containing wearable-sensor signals from 83 individuals in real-life free-living conditions. The experimental results show that our framework achieves an astounding 73.48% accuracy in the fine-grained (normal, mild, moderate, severe) classification of PD severity based on hand movements. Overall, this study contributes to more accurate PD self-diagnosis in the wild, allowing doctors to provide remote drug intervention guidance.

Abstract This study was designed to investigate the prognostic value of the number and sites of extracranial metastasis (ECM) in NSCLC patients with BM. NSCLC patients with BM from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 2010 to 2015 were enrolled in analysis. Patients from 2010 to 2013 were included in the training set and those from 2014 to 2015 in the validation set. ECM sites among different subtypes of NSCLC were compared by Chi‐square tests. Kaplan–Meier methods and Cox regression models were performed to analyze survival data. Competing‐risks analysis was used to predict cumulative incidence rates for CSS and non‐CSS cause. We included 5974 patients in the training cohort and 3561 patients in the validation cohort. Most (nearly 80%) NSCLC patients with BM showed 0–1 involved extracranial organ, with the most and least common ECM organ being bone and distant lymph nodes (DLNs) among all subtypes of NSCLC, respectively. The origin and depositional characteristics of supported conglomerates in the Mahu Sag, Junggar Basin, Xinjiang, China, are examined. Based on the terminological comparison, modern sedimentary survey and core description, the initial connotation and similarities and differences in definition between supported conglomerates and other similar concepts are discussed, the modern sedimentary environment in which supported conglomerates develop is analyzed, and the sedimentological characteristics of supported conglomerates formed in different depositional environments revealed by the cores of Mahu conglomerate oil field in the Junggar Basin are described. The supported conglomerate is similar in texture to grain supported conglomerate and openwork conglomerate but has differences from them, so it is suggested to keep the term “supported conglomerate”, but the formation mechanism of supported conglomerate needs to be re-examined. Through field survey of modern sediments in Baiyanghe alluvial fan, Huangyangquan alluvial fan, and Wulungu Lake in Xinjiang, it is found that supported gravels not only formed by flooding events but also by sieving, avalanching, fluvial sorting as well as wind and wave reworking in the depositional environments such as inter-mountain creek, colluvium fan, gravel channel on gobi and the fan surface, lake beach, delta front, subaerial debris flow and subwater grain-flow etc. Supported gravels could form supported conglomerate after being buried. Supported conglomerates of seven different origins have been recognized in the cores of the Triassic and Permian stratum of Mahu Depression, Junggar Basin, namely, supported conglomerates in gravel channel deposits, in wind reworked channel deposits, in gravel beach bar deposits, in wave reworked delta front deposits, in mouth bar deposits and in debris flow deposits respectively. The study shows the supported conglomerates may be formed by a single depositional event or by multi-events during the post-depositional sedimentary reworking and even in diagenesis stage. Through flume experiment, numerical simulation, empirical model and modern sediment survey, infiltration process of gravelly channel can be reconstructed and the primary pore structure of supported gravel can be estimated. Statistics on physical properties of various types of reservoirs in Triassic Baikouquan Formation of Mahu oilfield show that granule conglomerate and pebbly conglomerate have higher porosity and permeability, while the cobble and coarse pebble conglomerate have lower permeability, which indicates that the supported gravels are easy to be reworked by post depositional filtration and diagenesis, and thus decrease in porosity and permeability. Currently, although the improvement of surgical techniques and the development of chemotherapy drugs have brought a certain degree of development to the treatment of osteosarcoma, the treatment of osteosarcoma has many shortcomings, and its treatment is limited. MiRNAs and exosomes can be used as diagnostic tools, and they play an important role in the occurrence and chemotherapy resistance of osteosarcoma. Therefore, providing a new method for the treatment of osteosarcoma is the key to solving this problem. To systematically summarize the research status of exoskeleton drug-loaded miRNA in osteosarcoma, we identified and evaluated 208 studies and found that exosome-carrying miRNA can be used as an index for the diagnosis and prognosis of osteosarcoma and share a certain relationship with chemosensitivity. In addition, exosomes can also be used as a carrier of genetic drugs able to regulate the progression of osteosarcoma. Based on the above findings, we propose suggestions for the future development of this field, aiming to bring new ideas for the early diagnosis and treatment of osteosarcoma.

ObjectiveTo investigate the impact of the human papillomavirus (HPV) status on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) arising from different anatomic subsites.MethodsHNSCC patients with known HPV status from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database between 2010–2015 were included in our analysis. Patients were classified into three categories of HNSCC according to Site recode ICD-O-3/WHO 2008 and Primary Site-labeled, namely, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and nasopharynx. Logistic regression model was conducted to evaluate the relationship between patient characteristics and HPV status. Kaplan-Meier methods and COX regression analysis were used to analyze survival data.ResultsA total of 9,943 HNSCC patients with known HPV status from the SEER database were enrolled, with 6,829 (68.7%) HPV-positive patients. HPV-positive and HPV-negative HNSCC were distinct and had different clinical and socioeconomic features (all P < 0.001). Primary sites, socioeconomical factors (age, sex, marital status, and race), and pathological features (TNM stage and grade) were closely related with HPV status (all P < 0.001). HPV-positive status was a favorable prognostic marker in HNSCC patients with cancers of the oropharynx and hypopharynx (all P < 0.001), but was not in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients (P = 0.843). A total of 8,933 oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC) and 558 hypopharyngeal carcinoma (HPC) patients were divided into the training and validation cohorts with a ratio of 1:1. Significant prognostic factors of the OS yielded by multivariate COX analysis in the training cohort were integrated to construct nomograms for OPC and HPC patients. The prognostic models showed a good discrimination with a C-index of 0.79 ± 0.007 and 0.73 ± 0.023 in OPC and HPC, respectively. Favorable calibration was reflected by the calibration curves. Additionally, corresponding risk classification systems for OPC and HPC patients based on the nomograms were built and could perfectly classify patients into low-risk, intermediated-risk, high-risk groups. OS in the three risk groups was accurately differentiated and showed a good discrimination.ConclusionHPV positivity was associated with an improved survival in HNSCC patients with cancers of the oropharynx and hypopharynx. Nomograms and corresponding risk classification systems were constructed to assist clinicians in evaluating the survival of OPC and HPC patients.

Natural gas has been discovered in many anticlines in the southern margin of the Junggar Basin. However, the geochemical characteristics of natural gas in different anticlines haven't been compared systematically, particularly, the type and source of natural gas discovered recently in Well Gaotan-1 at the Gaoquan anticline remain unclear. The gas composition characteristics and carbon and hydrogen isotope compositions in different anticlines were compared and sorted systematically to identify genetic types and source of the natural gas. The results show that most of the gas samples are wet gas, and a few are dry gas; the gas samples from the western and middle parts have relatively heavier carbon isotope composition and lighter hydrogen isotope composition, while the gas samples from the eastern part of southern basin have lighter carbon and hydrogen isotope compositions. The natural gas in the southern margin is thermogenic gas generated by freshwater-brackish water sedimentary organic matter, which can be divided into three types, coal-derived gas, mixed gas and oil-associated gas, in which coal-derived gas and mixed gas take dominance. The Jurassic coal measures is the main natural gas source rock in the southern margin, and the Permian lacustrine and the Upper Triassic lacustrine-limnetic facies source rocks are also important natural gas source rocks. The natural gas in the western part of the southern margin is derived from the Jurassic coal measures and the Permian lacustrine source rock, while the natural gas in the middle part of the southern margin is mainly derived from the Jurassic coal measures, partly from the Permian and/or the Upper Triassic source rocks, and the natural gas in the eastern part of the southern margin is originated from the Permian lacustrine source rock. The natural gas in the Qingshuihe oil and gas reservoir of Well Gaotan-1 is a mixture of coal-derived gas and oil-associated gas, of which the Jurassic and Permian source rocks contribute about half each. In this paper, factors controlling natural gas accumulation in the southern margin of Junggar Basin were mainly discussed by a comparison with natural gas generation and accumulation in the Kuqa Depression of Tarim Basin. The southern margin of Junggar Basin and the Kuqa Depression of Tarim Basin are located on the north and south sides of the Tianshan Mountains respectively, and they share the similar sedimentary stratigraphy and tectonic evolution history. In recent several decades, many large gas fields have been found in the Kuqa Depression of Tarim Basin, but no great breakthrough in the southern margin of Junggar Basin. Our results suggest that natural gas in the southern margin of Junggar Basin is mainly thermogenic wet gas, and can be divided into three types as coal-derived gas, mixed gas and oil-associated gas, of which the former two types are dominated. The Jurassic coal measures are the main source rocks of natural gas, and the main gas generation time from this set of source rocks matched well with the formation time of the anticline structures, resulting in favorable conditions for natural gas accumulation. In the western part of the southern margin in the Junggar Basin, the Permian lacustrine and the Upper Triassic lacustrine-swamp source rocks could be important sources of natural gas, and the main gas generation time also matched well with the formation time of traps. Compared with the Kuqa Depression of Tarim Basin, natural gas sources are better in the southern margin of Junggar Basin, and the geologic conditions are favorable for the formation of large oil and gas fields in the southern margin of Junggar Basin. The deep Permian-Jurassic-Cretaceous petroleum system is the most favorable petroleum system for natural gas exploration in the southern margin of Junggar Basin. The western part and the central part of the southern margin in the Junggar Basin could be the first targets for the discovery of the Jurassic coal-derived oil and gas reservoirs. The shallow Cretaceous-Neogene petroleum system is the second target for natural gas exploration.

Background Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is associated with higher body mass index (BMI), diabetes, older age and male gender, which are all risk factors for severe COVID-19.We aimed to study if OSA is an independent risk factor for COVID-19 infection or for severe COVID-19.Methods OSA diagnosis and COVID-19 infection were extracted from the hospital discharge, causes of death and infectious diseases registries in individuals who participated in the FinnGen study (n=260 405). Severe COVID-19 was defined as COVID-19 requiring hospitalisation. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to examine association. Comorbidities for either COVID-19 or OSA were selected as covariates. We performed a meta-analysis with previous studies.Results We identified 445 individuals with COVID-19, and 38 (8.5%) of them with OSA of whom 19 out of 91 (20.9%) were hospitalised. OSA associated with COVID-19 hospitalisation independent from age, sex, BMI and comorbidities (p-unadjusted=5.13×10−5, OR-adjusted=2.93 (95% CI 1.02 to 8.39), p-adjusted=0.045). OSA was not associated with the risk of contracting COVID-19 (p=0.25). A meta-analysis of OSA and severe COVID-19 showed association across 15 835 COVID-19 positive controls, and n=1294 patients with OSA with severe COVID-19 (OR=2.37 (95% 1.14 to 4.95), p=0.021).Conclusion Risk for contracting COVID-19 was the same for patients with OSA and those without OSA. In contrast, among COVID-19 positive patients, OSA was associated with higher risk for hospitalisation. Our findings are in line with earlier works and suggest OSA as an independent risk factor for severe COVID-19.

Recent outbreaks of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has led a global pandemic cross the world. Most countries took two main interventions: suppression like immediate lockdown cities at epicenter or mitigation that slows down but not stopping epidemic for reducing peak healthcare demand. Both strategies have their apparent merits and limitations; it becomes extremely hard to conduct one intervention as the most feasible way to all countries. Targeting at this problem, this paper conducted a feasibility study by defining a mathematical model named SEMCR, it extended traditional SEIR (Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered) model by adding two key features: a direct connection between Exposed and Recovered populations, and separating infections into mild and critical cases. It defined parameters to classify two stages of COVID-19 control: active contain by isolation of cases and contacts, passive contain by suppression or mitigation. The model was fitted and evaluated with public dataset containing daily number of confirmed active cases including Wuhan and London during January 2020 and March 2020. The simulated results showed that 1) Immediate suppression taken in Wuhan significantly reduced the total exposed and infectious populations, but it has to be consistently maintained at least 90 days (by the middle of April 2020). Without taking this intervention, we predict the number of infections would have been 73 folders higher by the middle of April 2020. Its success requires efficient government initiatives and effective collaborative governance for mobilizing of corporate resources to provide essential goods. This mode may be not suitable to other countries without efficient collaborative governance and sufficient health resources. 2) In London, it is possible to take a hybrid intervention of suppression and mitigation for every 2 or 3 weeks over a longer period to balance the total infections and economic loss. While the total infectious populations in this scenario would be possibly 2 times than the one taking suppression, economic loss and recovery of London would be less affected. 3) Both in Wuhan and London cases, one important issue of fitting practical data was that there were a portion (probably 62.9% in Wuhan) of self-recovered populations that were asymptomatic or mild symptomatic. This finding has been recently confirmed by other studies that the seroprevalence in Wuhan varied between 3.2% and 3.8% in different sub-regions. It highlights that the epidemic is far from coming to an end by means of herd immunity. Early release of intervention intensity potentially increased a risk of the second outbreak.

Interleukin 21 (IL-21) plays key roles in humoral immunity and autoimmune diseases. It is known to function in mature CD4+ T follicular B cell helper (TFH) cells, but its potential involvement in early T cell ontogeny is unclear. Here, we find that a significant population of newly activated thymic and peripheral CD4+ T cells functionally expresses IL-21 soon after birth. This naturally occurring population, termed natural (n)TH21 cells, exhibits considerable similarity to mature TFH cells. nTH21 cells originating and activated in the thymus are strictly dependent on autoimmune regulator (AIRE) and express high levels of NUR77, consistent with a bias toward self-reactivity. Their activation/expansion in the periphery requires gut microbiota and is held in check by FoxP3+ TREG cells. nTH21 cells are the major thymic and peripheral populations of IL-21+ cells to expand in an IL-21-dependent humoral autoimmune disease. These studies link IL-21 to T cell ontogeny, self-reactivity, and humoral autoimmunity.

Marigold plants with symptoms of mosaic, crinkle, leaf curl and necrosis were observed and small RNA and ribo-depleted total RNA deep sequencing were conducted to identify the associated viruses. Broad bean wilt virus 2, cucumber mosaic virus, turnip mosaic virus, a new potyvirus tentatively named marigold mosaic virus (MMV) and a new partitivirus named as marigold cryptic virus (MCV) were finally identified. Complete genome sequence analysis showed MMV was 9811 nt in length, encoding a large polyprotein with highest aa sequence identity (57%) with the putative potyvirus polygonatumkingianum virus 1. Phylogenetic analysis with the definite potyviruses based on the polyprotein sequence showed MMV clustered closest to plum pox virus. The complete genome of MCV comprised of dsRNA1 (1583 bp) and dsRNA2 (1459 bp), encoding the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), and coat protein (CP), respectively. MCV RdRp shared the highest (75.7%) aa sequence identity with the unclassified partitivirus ambrosia cryptic virus 2, and 59.0%, 57.1%, 56.1%, 54.5% and 33.7% with the corresponding region of the definite delta-partitiviruses, pepper cryptic virus 2, beet cryptic virus 3, beet cryptic virus 2, pepper cryptic virus 1 and fig cryptic virus, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on the RdRp aa sequence showed MCV clustered into the delta-partitivirus group. These findings enriched our knowledge of viruses infecting marigold, but the association of the observed symptom and the identified viruses and the biological characterization of the new viruses should be further investigated.

Through detailed geochemical analysis of over 40 crude oil, condensate oil and heavy oil samples in the southern margin of Junggar Basin, and based on the hydrocarbon generation condition of five sets of source rocks, with the combination between compositions of carbon isotopes of whole oil, light hydrocarbon, n-alkanes isoprenoids and biomarker composition characteristics, a detailed discussion on the source of the condensate oil in anticlines in the central part of the southern margin was carried out.
