Background: Cereal crops are a primary energy source for humans. Grain size and weight affect both evolutionary fitness and grain yield of cereals. Although studies on gene mining and molecular mechanisms controlling grain size and weight are constantly emerging in cereal crops, only a few systematic reviews on the underlying molecular mechanisms and their breeding applications are available so far. Aim of review: This review provides a general state-of-the-art overview of molecular mechanisms and targeted strategies for improving grain size and weight of cereals as well as insights for future yield-improving biotechnology-assisted breeding. Key scientific concepts of review: In this review, the evolution of research on grain size and weight over the last 20 years is traced based on a bibliometric analysis of 1158 publications and the main signaling pathways and transcriptional factors involved are summarized. In addition, the roles of post-transcriptional regulation and photosynthetic product accumulation affecting grain size and weight in maize and rice are outlined. State-of-the-art strategies for discovering novel genes related to grain size and weight in maize and other cereal crops as well as advanced breeding biotechnology strategies being used for improving yield including marker-assisted selection, genomic selection, transgenic breeding, and genome editing are also discussed.

Given global agricultural challenges such as population growth, climate change, and limitations on resources and the environment, as well as increasing diversity in breeding goals, relying on traditional breeding methods is inadequate to provide food security requirements and promote sustainable development. Genetic transformation technology has become an effective tool for performing functional genomics research and molecular breeding. In this study, we conducted an in-depth analysis of 1669 literary works to investigate the potential of developmental regulators (DRs) in enhancing the efficiency of plant genetic transformation, with a concentration on their use in maize. Through multi-omics data analysis, we identified 12 homologous DRs from various species that are potentially applicable to maize. We identified a total of 41 possible disease resistances (DRs) for maize genetic transformation. Further experimental verification of ZmWIND1, a novel regulator belonging to the ERF/AP2 transcription factor (TF) family, showed that it significantly improved the efficiency of plant regeneration and transformation efficiency in maize. Specifically, compared to the control group, the callus induction rates for the pG3GB411-ZmWIND1 vector increased to 60.22 % and 47.85 % in Xiang249 and Zheng58, respectively. Transformation efficiency increased to 37.5 % in Xiang249 and 16.56 % in Zheng58, both significantly surpassing the control group. These findings have the potential to broaden the range of transformable maize varieties and lines, as well as introduce new genetic transformation methods in agricultural biotechnology, underscoring the immense potential to enhance genetic transformation efficiency through systematic exploration and application of DRs in maize.

Abstract Background Studies have shown that plant endophytic microbial communities are ubiquitous and closely related to plant growth and health. To clarify the mechanism of the melon varieties with high resistant to wilt, the endophytic microbial compositions and metabolites in roots of melon varieties with high resistant ability to wilt were analyzed. Results The results showed that the abundances of Firmicutes, Ascomycota, Bacillus, Bradyrhizobium, Amycolatopsis, Actinospica, and Catenulispora all increased in roots of wilt high resistant melon varieties (MT) which compared to wilt susceptible melon varieties (MS). Meanwhile, Ochrobactrum, Bordetella, Roseateles, Staphylococcus, Acidovorax, Amycolatopsis, Catenulispora, Promicromonospora, and Gymnopilus were the unique endophytic microbes in roots of MT. Moreover, in comparison with the MS varieties, the functions of Defense mechanisms, Secondary metabolites biosynthesis, transport and catabolism, Nucleotide transport and metabolism, Signal transduction mechanisms, Coenzyme transport and metabolism, Carbohydrate transport and metabolism and Amino acid transport and metabolism all increased in roots of MT varieties. Additionally, the nucleotide metabolism and biosynthesis of cofactors metabolic pathways were also significantly increased in roots of MT varieties. On the other hand, the untargeted metabolome results showed that Biosynthesis of various plant secondary metabolites, Nucleotide metabolism and Biosynthesis of cofactors metabolic pathways were significantly increased in the expression of MT varieties; and the content of metabolic compounds such as flavonoids, Cinnamic acid compounds, Organic acid compounds, and Nucleotides were increased. In addition, the correlation between microbiome and metabolome indicates a significant correlation between the two. Conclusions All above results suggested that higher abundant antagonistic microbes and metabolic functions of endophytes in roots of wilt high resistant melon varieties (MT) were the important mechanisms for their high resistance to wilt. Abstract Background Alzheimer’s disease (AD), affecting many elders worldwide, is characterized by A-beta and tau-related cognitive decline. Accumulating evidence suggests that brain iron accumulation is an important characteristic of AD. However, the function and mechanism of the iron-mediated gut-brain axis on AD is still unclear. Methods A Caenorhabditis elegans model with tau-overexpression and a high-Fe diet mouse model of cognitive impairment was used for probiotic function evaluation. With the use of qPCR, and immunoblotting, the probiotic regulated differential expression of AD markers and iron related transporting genes was determined. Colorimetric kits, IHC staining, and immunofluorescence have been performed to explore the probiotic mechanism on the development of gut-brain links and brain iron accumulation. Results In the present study, a high-Fe diet mouse model was used for evaluation in which cognitive impairment, higher A-beta, tau and phosphorylated (p)-tau expression, and dysfunctional phosphate distribution were observed. Considering the close crosstalk between intestine and brain, probiotics were then employed to delay the process of cognitive impairment in the HFe mouse model. Pediococcus acidilactici (PA), but not Bacillus subtilis (BN) administration in HFe-fed mice reduced brain iron accumulation, enhanced global alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity, accelerated dephosphorylation, lowered phosphate levels and increased brain urate production. In addition, because PA regulated cognitive behavior in HFe fed mice, we used the transgenic Caenorhabditis elegans with over-expressed human p-tau for model, and then PA fed worms became more active and longer lived than E.coli fed worms, as well as p-tau was down-regulated. These results suggest that brain iron accumulation influences AD risk proteins and various metabolites. Furthermore, PA was shown to reverse tau-induced pathogenesis via iron transporters and AP-urate interaction. Conclusions PA administration studies demonstrate that PA is an important mediator of tau protein reduction, p-tau expression and neurodegenerative behavior both in Caenorhabditis elegans and iron-overload mice. Finally, our results provide candidates for AP modulation strategies as preventive tools for promoting brain health. Video Abstract

Plant male reproduction is a fine-tuned developmental process that is susceptible to stressful environments and influences crop grain yields. Phytohormone signaling functions in control of plant normal growth and development as well as in response to external stresses, but the interaction or crosstalk among phytohormone signaling, stress response, and male reproduction in plants remains poorly understood. Cross-species comparison among 514 stress-response transcriptomic libraries revealed that ms33-6038, a genic male sterile mutant deficient in the ZmMs33/ZmGPAT6 gene, displayed an excessive drought stress-like transcriptional reprogramming in anthers triggered mainly by disturbed jasmonic acid (JA) homeostasis. An increased level of JA appeared in ZmMs33-deficient anthers at both meiotic and post-meiotic stages and activated genes involved in JA biosynthesis and signaling as well as genes functioning in JA-mediated drought response. Excessive accumulation of JA elevated expression level of a gene encoding a WRKY transcription factor that activated the ZmMs33 promoter. These findings reveal a feedback loop of ZmMs33-JA-WRKY-ZmMs33 in controlling male sterility and JA-mediated stress response in maize, shedding light on the crosstalk of stress response and male sterility mediated by phytohormone homeostasis and signaling.

Abstract Three new halimane furanoditerpenoids (1–3) and three new clerodane furanoditerpenoids (4–6), along with seven known terpenoids including four pimarane diterpenoids (7–10) and three norisoprenoids (11–13) were isolated from the 95% EtOH extracts of the plants of Croton cnidophyllus. The 2D structures including absolute configuration of new furanoditerpenoids (1–6) were elucidated by analysis of their HRMS and NMR data as well as comparison of experimental and calculated ECD curves. Bioassay revealed that two compounds (8 and 9) possessed certain inhibitory effects against NO production stimulated by LPS, with IC50 values of 19.00 ± 1.76 and 21.61 ± 1.11 μM, respectively. Introduction: ATP Binding Cassette G (ABCG) transporters are associated with plant male reproduction, while their regulatory mechanisms underlying anther and pollen development remain largely unknown. Objectives: Identify and characterize a male-sterility gene ZmMs13 encoding an ABCG transporter in modulating anther and pollen development in maize. Methods: Phenotypic, cytological observations, and histochemistry staining were performed to characterize the ms13-6060 mutant. Map-based cloning and CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing were used to identify ZmMs13 gene. RNA-seq data and qPCR analyses, phylogenetic and microsynteny analyses, transient dual-luciferase reporter and EMSA assays, subcellular localization, and ATPase activity and lipidomic analyses were carried out to determine the regulatory mechanisms of ZmMs13 gene. Results: Maize ms13-6060 mutant displays complete male sterility with delayed callose degradation, premature tapetal programmed cell death (PCD), and defective pollen exine and anther cuticle formation. ZmMs13 encodes a plasm membrane (PM)- and endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-localized half-size ABCG transporter (ZmABCG2a). The allele of ZmMs13 in ms13-6060 mutant has one amino acid (I311) deletion due to a 3-bp deletion in its fourth exon. The I311 and other conserved amino acid K99 are essential for the ATPase and lipid binding activities of ZmMS13. ZmMs13 is specifically expressed in anthers with three peaks at stages S5, S8b, and S10, which are successively regulated by transcription factors ZmbHLH122, ZmMYB84, and ZmMYB33-1/-2 at these three stages. The triphasic regulation of ZmMs13 is sequentially required for callose dissolution, tapetal PCD and pollen exine development, and anther cuticle formation, corresponding to transcription alterations of callose-, ROS-, PCD-, sporopollenin-, and anther cuticle-related genes in ms13-6060 anthers. Conclusion: ms13-6060 mutation with one key amino acid (I311) deletion greatly reduces ZmMS13 ATPase and lipid binding activities and displays multiple effects during maize male reproduction. Our findings provide new insights into molecular mechanisms of ABCG transporters controlling anther and pollen development and male fertility in plants.

To explore how endophytic microbial compositions in amaranth roots are influenced by various fertilization methods and to determine whether these microbes are associated with amaranthin formation, we conducted an analysis of the endophytic microbial community structure. The roots of amaranth plants subjected to different fertilization treatments—conventional fertilization without potassium (NP), conventional fertilization without phosphorus (NK), conventional fertilization without nitrogen (PK), and balanced fertilization (NPK)—were examined. The results showed that the proportions of Streptomyces, Actinospica, and Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia in the amaranth roots under the balanced fertilization (NPK) treatment were all greater than those in the amaranth roots under the nitrogen (PK), phosphorus (NK), and potassium (NP) deficiency fertilization treatments. In contrast, the proportions of Phenylobacterium, Acrocalymma, Neocosmospora, Fusarium, Acidovorax, Gibellulopsis, Cladosporium, Dactylonectria, and Gibberella in the amaranth roots under the nutrient deficiency fertilization (NP, NK, and PK) treatments were higher than those in the amaranth roots under the balanced fertilization treatment. Additionally, a significantly positive correlation was found between Streptomyces and the amaranthin content. Furthermore, Acrocalymma, Neocosmospora, and Fusarium exhibited significantly negative correlations with the amaranthin content. The above results suggested that endophytes could easily colonize in amaranth roots as beneficial microorganisms under balanced fertilization conditions. In other words, the balanced fertilization (N, P and K fertilizers are 188.0, 53.0 and 50.0 kg·hm−2, respectively) could recruit more beneficial endogenous microorganisms in amaranth roots for improving their growth and quality.

Virtual reality, as a computer simulation system that can create virtual environments, is a fusion of multiple key technologies that are applied in different fields with important practical value and significance. This paper focuses on optimizing the artificial intelligence-based dynamic scene generation and perception mechanism in virtual reality. Firstly, a virtual dynamic scene generation method combining scene management technology and image rendering technology is proposed. In order to optimize the dynamic scene perception mechanism in virtual reality, a perception model based on spatial interaction perception and based on the analysis of user dynamic interaction is proposed. A two-layer perception management strategy is proposed. The paper finally uses the virtual reality technology proposed in this paper to create a Chinese classical garden attraction in a scenic spot. It carries out modeling accuracy assessment and comparison experiments and invites garden professionals and tourists to evaluate the overall effect of the virtual scene. The survey results show that more than 80% of the tourists are satisfied with the generation of the dynamic scene and think that it has spatial continuity and immersive experience.

In the era of rapid technological development, the integration of artificial intelligence and virtual reality technology has gradually become a research hotspot. Interpersonal interaction, as an important part of virtual reality, also presents opportunities and challenges. The study builds the virtual interpersonal interaction model using the emotion model and hierarchical emotion as the learning algorithm after exploring the key technology of virtual interpersonal interaction based on the UGC model. Finally, the complex interpersonal interaction in virtual reality is simulated to examine the use of virtual community users and the factors affecting interpersonal interaction in virtual communities. According to the results, the percentage of female users of virtual communities is 14.28 percentage points higher than that of male users. The majority of people aged 18-40 who use virtual communities account for 88.01% of the population. In terms of education distribution, the group of bachelor’s degree holders is the group that uses virtual communities the most frequently, accounting for 66.52%. The study concluded that 8 out of the 11 hypotheses it proposed were valid. Among them, hypothesis 3 and hypothesis 11 were supported by 0.01 significance, and hypothesis 9 had a significance of 0.017, which reached 0.05 significance level.

Plant cell elongation depends on well-defined gene regulations, adequate nutrients, and timely cell wall modifications. Anther size is positively correlated with the number and viability of pollen grains, while little is known about molecular mechanisms underlying anther cell elongation. Here, we found that properly activated cell elongation regulators at transcriptional levels in loss-of-function ZmMs33 mutant (ms33-6038) anthers failed to promote maize anther elongation. ZmMs33 deficiency disrupted metabolic homeostasis mainly by inhibiting both photosynthesis in anther endothecium and lipid accumulation in anther tapetum. Importantly, ms33-6038 anthers displayed ectopic, premature and excessive secondary cell wall thickening in anther middle layer, which constrained cell elongation structurally and blocked nutrient flows across different anther wall layers. The metabolic disorder was only found in ms33-6038 mutant rather than several representative male-sterility lines at transcriptional and post-translational levels. Collectively, the disordered metabolisms and blocked nutrient flows defeated the activated cell elongation regulators, and finally inhibited anther elongation and growth with a unique “idling effect” in ms33-6038 mutant.

Stalk lodging seriously affects yield and quality of crops, and it can be caused by several factors, such as environments, developmental stages, and internal chemical components of plant stalks. Breeding of stalk lodging-resistant varieties is thus an important task for maize breeders. To better understand the genetic basis underlying stalk lodging resistance, several methods such as quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping and genome-wide association study (GWAS) have been used to mine potential gene resources. Based on different types of genetic populations and mapping methods, many significant loci associated with stalk lodging resistance have been identified so far. However, few work has been performed to compare and integrate these reported genetic loci. In this study, we first collected hundreds of QTLs and quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) related to stalk lodging traits in maize. Then we mapped and integrated the QTLs and QTNs in maize genome to identify overlapped hotspot regions. Based on the genomic confidence intervals harboring these overlapped hotspot regions, we predicted candidate genes related to stalk lodging traits. Meanwhile, we mapped reported genes to these hotspot regions. Finally, we constructed molecular regulatory networks underlying stalk lodging resistance in maize. Collectively, this study provides not only useful genetic loci for deeply exploring molecular mechanisms of stalk lodging resistance traits, but also potential candidate genes and targeted strategies for improving stalk lodging resistance to increase crop yields in future.

This work demonstrates distinct mass-independent mercury isotope fractionation in global basalts, which suggests mantle Hg isotope heterogeneity and reveals large-scale translithospheric Hg recycling via plate tectonics.

Probiotics are known to contribute to the anti-oxidation, immunoregulation, and aging delay. Here, we investigated the extension of lifespan by fermented pickles-origin Pediococcus acidilactici (PA) in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), and found that PA promoted a significantly extended longevity of wild-type C. elegans. The further results revealed that PA regulated the longevity via promoting the insulin/IGF-1 signaling, JNK/MAPK signaling but not TOR signaling in C. elegans, and that PA reduced the reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and modulated expression of genes involved in fatty acids uptake and lipolysis, thus reducing the fat accumulation in C. elegans. Moreover, this study identified the nrfl-1 as the key regulator of the PA-mediated longevity, and the nrfl-1/daf-18 signaling might be activated. Further, we highlighted the roles of one chloride ion exchanger gene sulp-6 in the survival of C. elegans and other two chloride ion channel genes clh-1 and clh-4 in the prolonged lifespan by PA-feeding through the modulating expression of genes involved in inflammation. Therefore, these findings reveal the detailed and novel molecular mechanisms on the longevity of C. elegans promoted by PA.

Whole grains have been recommended in the diet in most countries, with numerous publications focusing on their health effect. A systematic analysis of these publications on different research methods, regions and perspectives will contribute to an understanding of the innovation pattern in this field. This bibliometric study analyzes the global publication characteristics, hotspots and frontiers of whole grain health benefit research, and discusses the trends and prospects of this topic. The overall number of publications is on the rise, with the United States contributing the most publications. The most cited literature shows that observational studies, systematic reviews and meta-analysis are the most widely used methods. The main focus in this area is on dietary fiber and bioactive substances, while the latter has received increased attention in recent years in particular. With the increasingly prominent problems of hidden hunger and chronic disease, the development of whole grain foods and their optimum intake have gradually become hot topics. In addition to the need to reveal the mechanism of whole grain health effects, consensus needs to be reached on standards and definitions for whole grain foods, and attention should be paid to the retention of taste and healthy nutrients in processing.

Leaching technique was mostly carried out on submarine rock powder to minimize or eliminate secondary effect of seawater interaction on Sr and Pb isotope magmatic signatures. However, the effect of leaching on trace element contents is comparatively poorly established. To investigate such effects, we have compared trace element and Nd-Pb isotopic data for acid leached ∼290 Ma Keping basalts in the Tarim Large Igneous Province (NW China) with unleached data on the same rocks. Rare earth elements (REE), Y, Th and U contents of leached sample grains (0.6–1.0 mm size) are 10–65% lower than those of unleached grains of the same sample, whereas other trace elements are not affected. Sm/Nd, Lu/Hf, U/Pb and Th/Pb ratios are fractionated by acid leaching between leached and unleached sample grains. Nd isotope values are unaffected by leaching, but 208Pb/204Pb and 206Pb/204Pb values of leached samples are significantly lower than those of unleached samples. X-ray diffraction results suggest that removal of secondary epidote during the acid leaching process could result in the fractionation of REE, Y, Th and U contents, and Sm/Nd, Lu/Hf, U/Pb and Th/Pb ratios, and 208Pb/204Pb and 206Pb/204Pb values. These results suggest that when the samples have been leached with strong acid (>1N HCl), their trace element cannot be used to trace the sources and petrogenesis. If leaching is applied to old (e.g., >100 Ma) continental basalts in order to eliminate contamination during sample collection, storage, sawing and crushing, Th/Pb and U/Pb ratios used to calculate the initial Pb isotope values, should be obtained on the same leached samples. Genome- or gene-editing (abbreviated here as ‘GEd’) presents great opportunities for crop improvement. This is especially so for the countries in the Asia-Pacific region, which is home to more than half of the world’s growing population. A brief description of the science of gene-editing is provided with examples of GEd products. For the benefits of GEd technologies to be realized, international policy and regulatory environments must be clarified, otherwise non-tariff trade barriers will result. The status of regulations that relate to GEd crop products in Asian countries and Australasia are described, together with relevant definitions and responsible regulatory bodies. The regulatory landscape is changing rapidly: in some countries, the regulations are clear, in others they are developing, and some countries have yet to develop appropriate policies. There is clearly a need for the harmonization or alignment of GEd regulations in the region: this will promote the path-to-market and enable the benefits of GEd technologies to reach the end-users.

Gene editing (GE) has become one of the mainstream bioengineering technologies over the past two decades, mainly fueled by the rapid development of the CRISPR/Cas system since 2012. To date, plenty of articles related to the progress and applications of GE have been published globally, but the objective, quantitative and comprehensive investigations of them are relatively few. Here, 13,980 research articles and reviews published since 1999 were collected by using GE-related queries in the Web of Science. We used bibliometric analysis to investigate the competitiveness and cooperation of leading countries, influential affiliations, and prolific authors. Text clustering methods were used to assess technical trends and research hotspots dynamically. The global application status and regulatory framework were also summarized. This analysis illustrates the bottleneck of the GE innovation and provides insights into the future trajectory of development and application of the technology in various fields, which will be helpful for the popularization of gene editing technology.

In plants, oxidative stress and metabolic reprogramming frequently induce male sterility, however our knowledge of the underlying molecular mechanism is far from complete. Here, a maize genic male-sterility (GMS) mutant (ms33-6038) with a loss-of-function of the ZmMs33 gene encoding glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase 6 (GPAT6) displayed severe deficiencies in the development of a four-layer anther wall and microspores and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) content in anthers. In ms33-6038 anthers, transcriptome analysis identified thousands of differentially expressed genes that were functionally enriched in stress response and primary metabolism pathways. Further investigation revealed that 64 genes involved in ROS production, scavenging, and signaling were specifically changed in expression levels in ms33-6038 anthers compared to the other five investigated GMS lines. The severe oxidative stress triggered premature tapetal autophagy and metabolic reprogramming mediated mainly by the activated SnRK1-bZIP pathway, as well as the TOR and PP2AC pathways, proven by transcriptome analysis. Furthermore, 20 reported maize GMS genes were altered in expression levels in ms33-6038 anthers. The excessive oxidative stress and the metabolic reprogramming resulted in severe phenotypic deficiencies in ms33-6038 anthers. These findings enrich our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which ROS and metabolic homeostasis impair anther and pollen development in plants.

Maize tassel is the male reproductive organ which is located at the plant’s apex; both its morphological structure and fertility have a profound impact on maize grain yield. More than 40 functional genes regulating the complex tassel traits have been cloned up to now. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms underlying the whole process, from male inflorescence meristem initiation to tassel morphogenesis, are seldom discussed. Here, we summarize the male inflorescence developmental genes and construct a molecular regulatory network to further reveal the molecular mechanisms underlying tassel-trait formation in maize. Meanwhile, as one of the most frequently studied quantitative traits, hundreds of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and thousands of quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) related to tassel morphology have been identified so far. To reveal the genetic structure of tassel traits, we constructed a consensus physical map for tassel traits by summarizing the genetic studies conducted over the past 20 years, and identified 97 hotspot intervals (HSIs) that can be repeatedly mapped in different labs, which will be helpful for marker-assisted selection (MAS) in improving maize yield as well as for providing theoretical guidance in the subsequent identification of the functional genes modulating tassel morphology. In addition, maize is one of the most successful crops in utilizing heterosis; mining of the genic male sterility (GMS) genes is crucial in developing biotechnology-based male-sterility (BMS) systems for seed production and hybrid breeding. In maize, more than 30 GMS genes have been isolated and characterized, and at least 15 GMS genes have been promptly validated by CRISPR/Cas9 mutagenesis within the past two years. We thus summarize the maize GMS genes and further update the molecular regulatory networks underlying male fertility in maize. Taken together, the identified HSIs, genes and molecular mechanisms underlying tassel morphological structure and male fertility are useful for guiding the subsequent cloning of functional genes and for molecular design breeding in maize. Finally, the strategies concerning efficient and rapid isolation of genes controlling tassel morphological structure and male fertility and their application in maize molecular breeding are also discussed.

Maize is one of the leading food crops and its kernel is rich in starch, lipids, protein and other energy substances. In addition, maize kernels also contain many trace elements that are potentially beneficial to human health, such as vitamins, minerals and other secondary metabolites. However, gene resources that could be applied for nutrient improvement are limited in maize. In this review, we summarized 107 genes that are associated with nutrient content from different plant species and identified 246 orthologs from the maize genome. In addition, we constructed physical maps and performed a detailed expression pattern analysis for the 246 maize potential gene resources. Combining expression profiles and their potential roles in maize nutrient improvement, genetic engineering by editing or ectopic expression of these genes in maize are expected to improve resistant starch, oil, essential amino acids, vitamins, iron, zinc and anthocyanin levels of maize grains. Thus, this review provides valuable gene resources for maize nutrient improvement.

Innovations in food manufacturing support the agenda for sustainable development goal 9 (SDG9) on industry, innovation and infrastructure. Pursuant to this goal, this study aims to develop an automated multi-spit lamb rotisserie machine that potentially improves the lamb-roasting productivity for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The conceptualisation involved patents, scholarly literature and product reviews of lamb-roasting devices. The design and analysis are performed using Autodesk Inventor 2019. A scaled-down prototype is developed and tested with (1) roasting output, (2) roasting time and (3) temperature stability tests. The data for test (1) are analysed by comparing the means between control and experimental groups. The data for tests (2) and (3) are analysed using the t-test and Mann–Whitney U test, respectively. Significant differences are observed in tests (1) and (2), with outcomes being in favour of the proposed invention. The prototype cooks 92.27% faster with 700% more meat than a regular lamb roaster. It also cooks at a stable temperature. The cost analysis indicated that this invention could be sold at USD 278 if mass-produced. The design is structurally simple, inexpensive and easy to manufacture, allowing SMEs that rely on traditional spit-based machines to enhance their ability in producing roast lamb.
