Abstract

We update the ephemerides of 16 transiting exoplanets using our ground-based observations, new TESS data, and previously published observations including those of amateur astronomers. All these light curves were modeled by making use of a set of quantitative criteria with the EXOFAST code to obtain mid-transit times. We searched for statistically significant secular and/or periodic trends in the mid-transit times. We found that the timing data are well modeled by a linear ephemeris for all systems except for XO-2 b, for which we detect an orbital decay with the rate of -12.95 $\pm$ 1.85 ms/yr that can be confirmed with future observations. We also detect a hint of potential periodic variations in the TTV data of HAT-P-13 b which also requires confirmation with further precise observations., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

In this study, the properties of the $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ hidden charm poles are analyzed under the variation of the bare 2P charmonium mass within the effective field theory proposed in Ref.[1]. The main focus of the current work is on the pole trajectory of the $\chi_{c1}(2P)$ charmonium dressed by the $D \bar{D}^*$ meson loops. It is shown that the trajectories of the pole change radically for values of the bare charmonium mass above a certain value and also depending on how close the pole is to the threshold., Comment: 24 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ and its mixing parameter with the photon, $\varepsilon$. The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ ranging between 0.8 and 3.3$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$ GeV, and $\varepsilon^2$ ranging between $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-17}$.

Abstract

We propose to build and operate a detector that, for the first time, will measure the process $pp\to\nu X$ at the LHC and search for feebly interacting particles (FIPs) in an unexplored domain. The TI18 tunnel has been identified as a suitable site to perform these measurements due to very low machine-induced background. The detector will be off-axis with respect to the ATLAS interaction point (IP1) and, given the pseudo-rapidity range accessible, the corresponding neutrinos will mostly come from charm decays: the proposed experiment will thus make the first test of the heavy flavour production in a pseudo-rapidity range that is not accessible by the current LHC detectors. In order to efficiently reconstruct neutrino interactions and identify their flavour, the detector will combine in the target region nuclear emulsion technology with scintillating fibre tracking layers and it will adopt a muon identification system based on scintillating bars that will also play the role of a hadronic calorimeter. The time of flight measurement will be achieved thanks to a dedicated timing detector. The detector will be a small-scale prototype of the scattering and neutrino detector (SND) of the SHiP experiment: the operation of this detector will provide an important test of the neutrino reconstruction in a high occupancy environment., Comment: Letter of Intent

6. Photoproduction of mixed radions at a proton-proton collider

Abstract

We investigate Higgs-radion mixing scenario through single radion photoproduction process $pp\to p\gamma p\to pRqX$ at the LHC where $X$ represents the remnants of one of the initial protons. We consider high luminosity values of $L_{int}=200\;fb^{-1}$, $500\;fb^{-1}$ and $3000\;fb^{-1}$. We obtain bounds on the mixing parameter space by considering $R\to \gamma\gamma$, $R\to W^+ W^-$ and $R\to ZZ$ decay channels of the radion as the signal. We also perform a similar analysis for a 100 TeV future proton-proton collider and compare its potential with that of LHC., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The SHiP experiment is designed to search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 GeV/c proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. An essential task for the experiment is to keep the Standard Model background level to less than 0.1 event after $2\times 10^{20}$ protons on target. In the beam dump, around $10^{11}$ muons will be produced per second. The muon rate in the spectrometer has to be reduced by at least four orders of magnitude to avoid muon-induced combinatorial background. A novel active muon shield is used to magnetically deflect the muons out of the acceptance of the spectrometer. Abstract

A new general purpose fixed target facility is proposed at the CERN SPS accelerator which is aimed at exploring the domain of hidden particles and make measurements with tau neutrinos. Hidden particles are predicted by a large number of models beyond the Standard Model. The high intensity of the SPS 400~GeV beam allows probing a wide variety of models containing light long-lived exotic particles with masses below ${\cal O}$(10)~GeV/c$^2$, including very weakly interacting low-energy SUSY states. The experimental programme of the proposed facility is capable of being extended in the future, e.g. to include direct searches for Dark Matter and Lepton Flavour Violation., Comment: Technical Proposal

Abstract

We update the ephemerides of 16 transiting exoplanets using our ground-based observations, new Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite data, and previously published observations including those of amateur astronomers. All these light curves were modelled by making use of a set of quantitative criteria with the exofast code to obtain mid-transit times. We searched for statistically significant secular and/or periodic trends in the mid-transit times. We found that the timing data are well modelled by a linear ephemeris for all systems except for XO-2 b, for which we detect an orbital decay with the rate of −12.95 ± 1.85 ms yr−1 that can be confirmed with future observations. We also detect a hint of potential periodic variations in the transit timing variation data of HAT-P-13 b, which also requires confirmation with further precise observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A joint analysis of solar neutrino data together with the new KamLAND data is presented in the RSFP framework. It is investigated that how the new KamLAND data effects the allowed regions at different $\mu B$ values. A limit on $\mu B$ value is found at the different confidence level intervals. Abstract

When solar neutrino and KamLAND data are analyzed separately one finds that, even though allowed regions of neutrino parameters overlap, the values of $\delta m^2$ and the mixing angle $\theta_{12}$ at the $\chi^2$ minima are different. We show that a non-zero, but small value of the angle $\theta_{13}$ can account for this behavior. From the joint analysis of solar neutrino and KamLAND data we find the best fit value of $\sin^2 2 \theta_{13} = 0.01 ^{-0.01}_{+0.09}$., Comment: 6 pages of LATEX, 5 figures

20. Pathways of bond topology transitions at the interface of silicon nanocrystals and amorphous silica matrix

Abstract

The interface chemistry of silicon nanocrystals (NCs) embedded in amorphous oxide matrix is studied through molecular dynamics simulations with the chemical environment described by the reactive force field model. Our results indicate that the Si NC-oxide interface is more involved than the previously proposed schemes which were based on solely simple bridge or double bonds. We identify different types of three-coordinated oxygen complexes, previously not noted. The abundance and the charge distribution of each oxygen complex is determined as a function of the NC size as well as the transitions among them. The oxidation at the surface of NC induces tensile strain to Si-Si bonds which become significant only around the interface, while the inner core remains unstrained. Unlike many earlier reports on the interface structure, we do not observe any double bonds. Furthermore, our simulations and analysis reveal that the interface bond topology evolves among different oxygen bridges through these three-coordinated oxygen complexes., Comment: 5 pages 6 figures 1 table

However, evidence on factors predicting mortality is limited.Research Question: Are there any useful markers to predict mortality in COVID-19 patients with COPD?.Study Design and Methods: A total of 689 patients were included in this study from the COPET study, a national multicenter observational study investigating COPD phenotypes consisting of patients who were followed up with a spirometry-confirmed COPD diagnosis. Patients were also retrospectively examined in terms of COVID-19 and their outcomes.Results: Among the study patients, 105 were diagnosed with PCR-positive COVID-19, and 19 of them died. Body mass index (p= 0.01) and ADO (age, dyspnoea, airflow obstruction) index (p= 0.01) were higher, whereas predicted FEV1 (p< 0.001) and eosinophil count (p= 0.003) were lower in patients who died of COVID-19. Each 0.755 unit increase in the ADO index increased the risk of death by 2.12 times, and each 0.007 unit increase in the eosinophil count decreased the risk of death by 1.007 times. The optimum cut-off ADO score of 3.5 was diagnostic with 94% sensitivity and 40% specificity in predicting mortality.Interpretation: Our study suggested that the ADO index recorded in the stable period in patients with COPD makes a modest contribution to the prediction of mortality due to COVID-19. 32. Asymmetric light propagation in chirped photonic crystal waveguides

Abstract

We report numerical and experimental investigations of asymmetric light propagation in a newly designed photonic structure that is formed by creating a chirped photonic crystal (PC) waveguide. The use of a non-symmetric distribution of unit cells of PC ensures the obtaining of asymmetric light propagation. Properly designing the spatial modulation of a PC waveguide inherently modifies the band structure. That in turn induces asymmetry for the light's followed path. The investigation of the transmission characteristics of this structure reveals optical diode like transmission behavior. The amount of power collected at the output of the waveguide centerline is different for the forward and backward propagation directions in the designed configuration. The advantageous properties of the proposed approach are the linear optic concept, compact configuration and compatibility with the integrated photonics. These features are expected to hold great potential for implementing practical optical rectifier-type devices. 33. Rainbow trapping using chirped all-dielectric periodic structures

Abstract

We report a numerical investigation of rainbow trapping (light of different wavelengths) at different spatial locations in a newly designed two-dimensional photonic structure that is formed using chirping parameters in two-dimensional photonic crystals. Chirped parameters ensure trapping of certain light wavelengths inside these structures. To achieve broadband electromagnetic wave trapping, we properly adjust and chirp the position and dielectric filling factor of each unit cell within a photonic crystal structure. Abstract

Background and purpose: Knowledge concerning the use AI models for the classification of glenohumeral osteoarthritis (GHOA) and avascular necrosis (AVN) of the humeral head is lacking. We aimed to analyze how a deep learning (DL) model trained to identify and grade GHOA on plain radiographs performs. Our secondary aim was to train a DL model to identify and grade AVN on plain radiographs. Patients and methods: A modified ResNet-type network was trained on a dataset of radiographic shoulder examinations from a large tertiary hospital. A total of 7,139 radiographs were included. The dataset included various projections of the shoulder, and the network was trained using stochastic gradient descent. Performance evaluation metrics, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity were used to assess the network’s performance for each outcome. Results: The network demonstrated AUC values ranging from 0.73 to 0.93 for GHOA classification and > 0.90 for all AVN classification classes. The network exhibited lower AUC for mild cases compared with definitive cases of GHOA. When none and mild grades were combined, the AUC increased, suggesting difficulties in distinguishing between these 2 grades. Conclusion: We found that a DL model can be trained to identify and grade GHOA on plain radiographs. Furthermore, we show that a DL model can identify and grade AVN on plain radiographs. The network performed well, particularly for definitive cases of GHOA and any level of AVN. However, challenges remain in distinguishing between none and mild GHOA grades.

42. Theoretical and experimental study on surface modes of low symmetric periodic structures

Abstract

In this study, surface waves supported at the boundary of two-dimensional all dielectric low-symmetric periodic structures (LSPS) are numerically investigated and experimentally verified in the microwave region. In LSPSs possessing more than one scattering element inside the unit cell, by modifying the secondary rods' positions, the surface corrugation is generated without altering the dielectric filling ratio of the structure. This modification initiates shifting of bands corresponding to the surface mode frequencies within the band gap. Thanks to the superior aspects of LSPSs, surface modes can be easily tuned in terms of the morphology of the unit cell elements. Manipulations of band gap-guided photons at the surface of the symmetry reduced photonic crystals hold potential to design new chemical and biological sensing applications and provide alternative routes for the realization of strong light and matter interactions. © 2017 IEEE.

Abstract

The inverse design method has recently been used effectively in the design of nanophotonic devices, since it provides effective optimization of all structural parameters that are not possible with heuristic methods. In this study, using the inverse design algorithm, nanobeam cavity design with very small dimensions, which can trap the light in the structure effectively, has been realized. In order to design cavity structure, the objective-first algorithm, which is fast as well as providing reliable results, has been effectively revised and used. We also examined the effect of the algorithm starting point on the quality factor, which is one of the most important figure of merit. As a result, the algorithm-based nanobeam structure design has the potential to be used in a wide range of applications at where integrated photonic devices are utilized such as nonlinear optics, quantum cryptology, lasers, filters and biosensors. © 2018 IEEE.

44. Theoretical and experimental investigations of asymmetric light transport in graded index photonic crystal waveguides

Abstract

To provide asymmetric propagation of light, we propose a graded index photonic crystal (GRIN PC) based waveguide configuration that is formed by introducing line and point defects as well as intentional perturbations inside the structure. The designed system utilizes isotropic materials and is purely reciprocal, linear, and time-independent, since neither magneto-optical materials are used nor time-reversal symmetry is broken. The numerical results show that the proposed scheme based on the spatial-inversion symmetry breaking has different forward (with a peak value of 49.8%) and backward transmissions (4.11% at most) as well as relatively small round-trip transmission (at most 7.11%) in a large operational bandwidth of 52.6 nm. The signal contrast ratio of the designed configuration is above 0.80 in the telecom wavelengths of 1523.5-1576.1 nm. An experimental measurement is also conducted in the microwave regime: A strong asymmetric propagation characteristic is observed within the frequency interval of 12.8 GHz-13.3 GHz. The numerical and experimental results confirm the asymmetric transmission behavior of the proposed GRIN PC waveguide. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract

Previous designs of integrated photonic devices mainly included intuitive trial and error approach or optimization methods using parameter search algorithms. The small parameter space and poor investigation of the underlying physics limited the device performances, functionalities, and structural dimensions. Therefore, in this study, we demonstrate efficient and compact design of next-generation integrated photonic devices by using recently emerged objective-first inverse design algorithm. In this method, the target performance parameters to be achieved are first defined and then dielectric distribution of nanophotonic structures is obtained in an iterative manner. The proposed inverse designs of wavelength demultiplexer, optical filter and power splitter exhibited great device performances such as high transmission efficiency and small dimension together with new functionality. 46. Strong light confinement of tunable resonances in low symmetric quasicrystal through orientational variations

Abstract

We propose octagonal quasi-crystal designs providing effective light confinement for different resonance frequencies through the structural modification with the utilization of low-symmetric photonic unit cells. The effect of rotational symmetry reduction on the cavity resonance appearing in the corresponding photonic bandgap of each structure has been investigated. Relatively small dielectric cylinders have been additionally located at discrete angular positions with particular distances from the center of the each core cylinder and the noteworthy resonance peaks have been observed to emerge in the bandgaps. Rotational symmetry of the proposed structures is to be modified by varying the angular displacement of the smaller quasi-crystalline rods with the angle ? in terms of the x-axis of the small rod. The successful demonstration of tunable resonance modes has been achieved numerically and experimentally for the first time by tailoring the positional parameters and reducing the crystalline symmetry. Strongly localized modes in the proposed quasi-crystals have great potential for various slow light applications along with other technologies such as sensors, lasers and memory units. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. 47. On-chip photonic filter design via objective-first algorithm

Abstract

We propose and demonstrate compact on-chip optical filters with ultra-high efficiencies, which are designed via the recently-emerged objective-first inverse design algorithm. The all-dielectric high-pass, low-pass and all-pass filters presented in this study operate within the telecommunication wavelength spectrum of 1260-1625 nm. The high-pass filter shows an outstanding performance for the transmission efficiency higher than the frequency of 210 THz and an effective suppression of the other spectral region. Also, the proposed low-pass filter exhibits high transmission and significant blocking at the ranges of 170 Thz-205 Thz and 205 Thz-240 Thz, respectively. Furthermore, the designed allpass filter possesses notable spectral transmissivity and blocking characteristics. The promising features of the structures were also verified via the finite-difference time-domain method. Such manufacturable optical filters with great device performances are favorable candidates for next-generation photonic applications. © 2018 SPIE.

Abstract

The effects of the structural parameters of the photonic crystal (PC) placed between glass and indium tin oxide (ITC) for an efficient organic light-emitting diode (OLED) design is studied. It is shown that the light extraction efficiency of OLEDs varies with the PC height and period. 49. Theoretical and experimental study on surface modes of low symmetric periodic structures

Abstract

In this study, surface waves supported at the boundary of two-dimensional all dielectric low-symmetric periodic structures (LSPS) are numerically investigated and experimentally verified in the microwave region. In LSPSs possessing more than one scattering element inside the unit cell, by modifying the secondary rods' positions, the surface corrugation is generated without altering the dielectric filling ratio of the structure. This modification initiates shifting of bands corresponding to the surface mode frequencies within the band gap. Thanks to the superior aspects of LSPSs, surface modes can be easily tuned in terms of the morphology of the unit cell elements. Manipulations of band gap-guided photons at the surface of the symmetry reduced photonic crystals hold potential to design new chemical and biological sensing applications and provide alternative routes for the realization of strong light and matter interactions. © 2017 IEEE.
