Search

For high-Tc superconductors, clarifying the role and origin of the pseudogap is essential for understanding the pairing mechanism. Among the various models describing the pseudogap, the preformed Cooper pair model is a potential candidate. Therefore, we present experimental evidence for the preformed Cooper pair model by studying the pseudogap spectrum observed in the optical conductivity of a Ca10(Pt4As8)(Fe2As2)5 (Tc = 34.6 K) single crystal. We observed a clear pseudogap structure in the optical conductivity and observed its temperature dependence. In the superconducting (SC) state, one SC gap with a gap size of Δ = 26 cm−1, a scattering rate of 1/τ = 360 cm−1 and a low-frequency extra Drude component were observed. Spectral weight analysis revealed that the SC gap and pseudogap are formed from the same Drude band. This means that the pseudogap is a gap structure observed as a result of a continuous temperature evolution of the SC gap observed below Tc. This provides clear experimental evidence for the preformed Cooper pair model.

The temperature dependence of the electric resistivity measured in various magnetic fields was analyzed by the vortex glass theory and the thermally activated flux motion (TAFM) theory. The vortex glass-to-vortex liquid (GTL) transition Tg obtained from the analysis shows a temperature dependence of B g T = B 0 1 - T / T c m . The vortex liquid region is divided into the critical region existing in a finite temperature region just above Tg and the TAFM region present in the finite temperature region above it. In the critical region, the activation energy is expressed as U e f f = k B T T c - T / ( T c - T g ) , whereas in the TAFM region, the activity energy is expressed as temperature-nonlinear U T , B = U 0 B 1 - t q . In the GTL transition, (Ca0.85La0.15)10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 maintains the 3D vortex structure without exhibiting dimension crossover of the vortex, but Ca10(Pt3As8)((Fe0.92Pt0.08)2As2)5 exhibits the dimension crossover from the 3D vortex glass to the 2D vortex liquid.

We investigate changes in the vortex pinning mechanism caused by proton irradiation through the measurement of the in-plane electrical resistivity for H//c in a pristine and two proton-irradiated (total doses of 1 × 1015 and 1 × 1016 cm−2) SmBa2Cu3O7-δ (SmBCO) superconducting tapes. Even though proton irradiation has no effect on the critical temperature (Tc), the resulting artificial point defect causes an increase in normal state electrical resistivity. The electrical resistivity data around Tc shows no evidence of a phase transition to the vortex glass state but only broadens with increasing magnetic field due to the vortex depinning in the vortex liquid state. The vortex depinning is well interpreted by a thermally activated flux flow model in which the activation energy shows a nonlinear temperature change $${\boldsymbol{U}}{\boldsymbol{(}}{\boldsymbol{T}},{\boldsymbol{H}}{\boldsymbol{)}}{\boldsymbol{=}}{{\boldsymbol{U}}}_{{\boldsymbol{0}}}{\boldsymbol{(}}{\boldsymbol{H}}{\boldsymbol{)}}{{\boldsymbol{(}}{\bf{1}}-{\boldsymbol{T}}{\boldsymbol{/}}{{\boldsymbol{T}}}_{{\boldsymbol{c}}}{\boldsymbol{)}}}^{{\boldsymbol{q}}}$$ U ( T , H ) = U 0 ( H ) ( 1 − T / T c ) q (q = 2). The field dependence of activation energy shows a $${{\boldsymbol{U}}}_{{\bf{0}}}{\boldsymbol{ \sim }}{{\boldsymbol{H}}}^{-{\boldsymbol{\alpha }}}$$ U 0 ~ H − α with larger exponents above 4 T. This field dependence is mainly due to correlated disorders in pristine sample and artificially created point defects in irradiated samples. Compared with the vortex pinning due to correlated disorders, the vortex pinning due to the appropriate amount of point defects reduces the magnitude of Uo(H) in the low magnetic field region and slowly reduces Uo(H) in high magnetic fields.

We measured the optical reflectivity R(ω) for an underdoped (Ca0.935La0.065)10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 single crystal and obtained the optical conductivity $${\sigma }_{1}(\omega )$$ σ 1 ( ω ) using the K-K transformation. The normal state $${\sigma }_{1}(\omega )$$ σ 1 ( ω ) at 30 K is well fitted by a Drude-Lorentz model with two Drude components (ωp1 = 1446 cm−1 and ωp2 = 6322 cm−1) and seven Lorentz components. Relative reflectometry was used to accurately determine the temperature dependence of the superconducting gap at various temperatures below Tc. The results clearly show the opening of a superconducting gap with a weaker second gap structure; the magnitudes for the gaps are estimated from the generalized Mattis-Bardeen model to be Δ1 = 30 and Δ2 = 50 cm−1, respectively, at T = 8 K, which both decrease with increasing temperature. The temperature dependence of the gaps was not consistent with one-band BCS theory but was well described by a two-band (hence, two gap) BCS model with interband interactions. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density is flat at low temperatures, indicating an s-wave full-gap superconducting state.

For newly synthesized hole-doped Ca8.5Na1.5(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 single crystals, we measured the infrared reflectivity spectrum and the magnetic field dependence of magnetoresistivity and Hall resistivity. The results of these two experiments in normal states are well described by two band models. In the normal state below 150 K, the optical conductivity spectrum shows a transfer of spectral weights from the mid-infrared region to the near-infrared region. Meanwhile, the magnetoresistance and Hall resistance show a significant decrease in carrier density at 150 K. These two phenomena are due to the conversion of itinerant electrons to heavy electrons by the strong correlation effect, Hund's coupling. In the superconducting state, the spectral weight in the low frequency region by the superconducting condensate is completely suppressed, which is well analyzed by the generalized Mattis-Bardeen (M-B) model with a two superconducting gap.

We report on the thermally activated flux flow dependency on the doping dependent mixed state in NaFe1−x Co x As (x = 0.01, 0.03, and 0.07) crystals using the magnetoresistivity in the case of B//c-axis and B//ab-plane. It was found clearly that irrespective of the doping ratio, magnetoresistivity showed a distinct tail just above the Tc,offset associated with the thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) in our crystals. Furthermore, in TAFF region the temperature dependence of the activation energy follows the relation $$U(T,B)={U}_{0}(B){(1-T/{T}_{c})}^{q}$$ U ( T , B ) = U 0 ( B ) ( 1 − T / T c ) q with q = 1.5 in all studied crystals. The magnetic field dependence of the activation energy follows a power law of $${U}_{0}(B)\sim {B}^{-\alpha }$$ U 0 ( B ) ∼ B − α where the exponent α is changed from a low value to a high value at a crossover field of B = ∼2 T, indicating the transition from collective to plastic pinning in the crystals. Finally, it is suggested that the 3D vortex phase is the dominant phase in the low temperature region as compared to the TAFF region in our series samples.

We have measured the reflectivity of the optimally doped ${\mathrm{Ca}}_{8.5}{\mathrm{La}}_{1.5}({\mathrm{Pt}}_{3}{\mathrm{As}}_{8})({\mathrm{Fe}}_{10}{\mathrm{As}}_{10})$ single crystal $({T}_{c}=32.8\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K})$ over the broad frequency range from $40{\text{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ to 12 $000{\text{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and for temperatures from 8 K to 300 K. The optical conductivity spectra of the low-frequency region $(l1000\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\text{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1})$ in the normal state (80 K $lT\ensuremath{\le}300$ K) is well fitted with two Drude forms, which indicates the presence of multiple bands at the Fermi level. Decreasing temperature below 80 K, this low-frequency Drude spectra develops a pseudogap (PG) hump structure at around $100\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\text{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and continuously evolves into the fully opened superconducting (SC) gap structure below ${T}_{c}$. Theoretical calculations of the optical conductivity with the preformed Cooper pair model provide an excellent description of the temperature evolution of the PG structure above ${T}_{c}$ into the SC gap structure below ${T}_{c}$. The extracted two SC gap sizes are ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{S}=4.9$ $\text{meV}$ and ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{L}=14.2$ $\text{meV}$, suggesting ${\mathrm{Ca}}_{8.5}{\mathrm{La}}_{1.5}({\mathrm{Pt}}_{3}{\mathrm{As}}_{8})({\mathrm{Fe}}_{10}{\mathrm{As}}_{10})$ as a multiple-gap superconductor with a mixed character of the weak-coupling and strong-coupling superconductivity.

Background and Objectives The Korean Red Cross began nucleic acid amplification testing (NAT) for HIV and HCV in February 2005, and added HBV NAT beginning in June 2012. The current NAT system utilizes a multiplex assay for simultaneous detection of HBV DNA, HCV RNA and HIV-1 RNA. For samples that are reactive in the multiplex assay, we do specific tests for each virus. However, there have been cases of non-discriminated reactive (NDR) results which appear to be the result of non-specific reactions or cross-contamination, although some cases are considered to arise from the presence of low levels of HBV DNA due to occult hepatitis B infection. Materials and Methods We examined the incidence of NDR results in previous donations of some NAT-reactive donors. Additionally, for those donors with NDR results, we performed an HBV core antibody (anti-HBc) assay. Results From November 2015 to March 2016, there were 408 NAT-reactive donors. Of these, nineteen HBV NAT-reactive donors showed a history of NDR results in the past donations. Seven donors showed NDR results more than once. Of 771 NDR donors, 362 (47·0%) were anti-HBc reactive. Conclusion The NDR donors had a substantially higher rate of anti-HBc reactivity than other blood donors indicating that some with anti-HBc reactivity represent donors with occult HBV. Therefore, the incorporation of an anti-HBc testing for NDR donors could improve blood safety testing for the Korean Red Cross.

The influence of proton irradiation on the fluctuation-induced magnetoconductivity of high quality FeSe1−xTex (x=0.4, 0.55) (FST) thin films has been investigated. The measurements were performed with magnetic fields up to 13 T applied in the two main crystal directions. The results were interpreted in terms of the Ginzburg–Landau approach for three-dimensional materials under a total-energy cutoff. The analysis shows that properly-tuned proton irradiation does not appreciably affect fundamental superconducting parameters like the Tc value, the upper critical fields or the anisotropy. This has important consequences from the point of view of possible applications due to the enhancement of vortex pinning induced by irradiation. A perturbation mark is occasionally produced on the velocity indicator of the cluster panel of a vehicle during a vehicle collision. This mark can be used to estimate the velocity of the vehicle at the moment of the vehicle’s impact. In this study, the effect of the impact velocity and the deceleration of the vehicle on the perturbation mark were investigated, and an analysis of the driver’s injury was also conducted through a numerical pulse representation and computer simulations. Sled and pendulum tests were used to replicate the conditions that produce a perturbation mark on the velocity indicator of a cluster panel. It was verified that a higher peak acceleration is more likely than the impact velocity to cause a perturbation mark. According to the computer simulation results, a driver’s injury could be more severe at higher peak accelerations with a constant impact velocity. If a perturbation mark, which can be used to estimate the impact velocity, is found while investigating a vehicle accident, this mark reveals that the acceleration was higher than that listed in the related crash report. Therefore, the injuries of the occupants could be more serious than those expected at the reported impact velocity.

Objective. Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is prevalent among the elderly in Asian countries; however, the utilization of total knee replacement (TKR) is unknown. Using data from a national registry, we sought to estimate the incidence of TKR by age and sex, and the trend for TKR utilization from 2002 to 2005 in South Korea. Methods. Reimbursement records from all hospitals in South Korea were extracted from the Health Insurance Review Agency (HIRA) database. Records with both the procedure code corresponding to a TKR and the diagnosis code of knee OA were selected. We estimated the age- and sex-specific rates of TKR. To compare the rate of TKR between men and women, we calculated age-standardized risk ratios. A TKR registry from a single centre containing more clinical information was analysed, and the differences in the clinical features between men and women were compared. Results. From 2002 to 2005, 47 961 TKRs were performed in subjects over the age of 40 yrs due to OA. The rate of TKR has increased over the 4 yrs and was much higher in women than in men. Compared with men, the age-standardized rate ratios for TKR in women ranged from 7.4 to 8.0. The single-centre registry data revealed that there was no difference in age, disease duration and the Kellgren-Lawrence grade at the time of surgery between men and women. Conclusion. Using a national database, we found that the rate of TKR increased steadily from 2002 to 2005 in South Korea. The TKR rate in women was much higher than that in men. Risk factors that account for such disparity in TKR utilization need to be further investigated.

Using a combination of muon-spin relaxation $(\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{SR})$, inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), we investigated the novel iron-based superconductor with a triclinic crystal structure ${({\mathrm{CaFe}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Pt}}_{x}\mathrm{As})}_{10}{\mathrm{Pt}}_{3}{\mathrm{As}}_{8}$ (${T}_{\text{c}}=13$ K), containing platinum-arsenide intermediary layers. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density obtained from the $\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{SR}$ relaxation-rate measurements indicates the presence of two superconducting gaps, ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{\text{1}}\ensuremath{\gg}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{\text{2}}$. According to our INS measurements, commensurate spin fluctuations are centered at the $(\ensuremath{\pi},\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}0)$ wave vector, like in most other iron arsenides. Their intensity remains unchanged across ${T}_{\text{c}}$, indicating the absence of a spin resonance typical for many Fe-based superconductors. Instead, we observed a peak in the spin-excitation spectrum around $\ensuremath{\hbar}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}=7$ meV at the same wave vector, which persists above ${T}_{\text{c}}$ and is characterized by the ratio $\ensuremath{\hbar}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}/{k}_{\text{B}}{T}_{\text{c}}\ensuremath{\approx}6.2$, which is significantly higher than typical values for the magnetic resonant modes in iron pnictides $(\ensuremath{\sim}4.3)$. The temperature dependence of magnetic intensity at 7 meV revealed an anomaly around ${T}^{*}=45$ K related to the disappearance of this new mode. A suppression of the spin-lattice relaxation rate, $1/{T}_{1}T$, observed by NMR immediately below ${T}^{*}$ without any notable subsequent anomaly at ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$, indicates that ${T}^{*}$ could mark the onset of a pseudogap in ${({\mathrm{CaFe}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Pt}}_{x}\mathrm{As})}_{10}{\mathrm{Pt}}_{3}{\mathrm{As}}_{8}$, which is likely associated with the emergence of preformed Cooper pairs.

We investigate the doping dependence of flux pinning in superconducting NaFeCo x As (x = 0.01, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.07) single crystals grown by the Bridgman method. The electronic specific heat displays a pronounced anomaly in a sample series at superconducting transition temperature, which hardly shows any residual part at low temperature. We found that Co doping plays an important role in signifying the secondary peak in the magnetic hysteresis of optimally doped (x = 0.03) and heavily doped (x = 0.05, 0.07) crystals. Furthermore, the dependence of the relaxation rate S = d ln M/d ln t on magnetic field and temperature exhibits a decreasing trend within a certain range corresponding to the secondary peak effect in the optimally and heavily doped samples. The magnetic relaxation rate combined with the Maley analysis of the current-dependent creep energy shows a single-vortex pinning in the lightly doped sample dominant at low applied fields, and plastic pinning at high applied fields, without showing a secondary peak. However, in the optimally and heavily doped samples, the magnetic relaxation rate and U(J) isothermal analysis show that the collective pinning that dominates below H peak crosses over to plastic pinning for fields above H peak.

Terahertz and far-infrared spectroscopy in the temperature range, 4–300 K were used to study the normal and superconducting states of superconductor BaFe1.8Co0.2As2 with Tc = 22.5 K. At T < Tc, the vanishing of optical conductivity caused by the unity approach and flat behavior in reflectivity were observed below 45 cm−1. This feature indicates the formation of a superconducting energy gap due to the formation of Cooper pairs. The introduction of the two Drudes model well reproduced the normal state optical conductivity, indicating the multiband nature of this superconductor. Two superconducting energy gaps were estimated as = 2.90 meV and = 6.75 meV by the BCS model. Using the sum rule and dielectric function, the superconducting plasma frequency () can be estimated as 5170 ± 270 cm−1, yielding that the magnetic penetration depth (λ) is 3090 ± 160 A. This material was observed to fall on the universal scaling line, Nc ~ 4.4 .

This work was undertaken in order to study the developmental competence of nuclear transfer (NT ) into cat embryos using fetal fibroblast and adult skin fibroblast cells as donor nuclei. Oocytes were recovered by mincing the ovaries in Hepes-buffered TCM199 and selecting the cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs) with compact cumulus cell mass and dark color. Homogenous ooplasm was cultured for maturation in TCM199+10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) for 12 h and used as a source of recipient cytoplast for exogenous somatic nuclei. In experiment 1, we evaluated the effect of donor cell type on the reconstruction and development of cloned embryos. Fusion, first cleavage and blastocyst developmental rate were not different between fetal fibroblasts and adult skin cells (71.2 vs 66.8; 71.0 vs 57.6; 4.0 vs 6.1% respectively; P < 0.05). In experiment 2, cloned embryos were surgically transferred into the oviducts of recipient queens. One of the seven recipient queens was delivered naturally of 2 healthy cloned cats and 1 stillborn from fetal fibroblast cells of male origin 65 days after embryo transfer. One of three recipient queens was delivered naturally of 1 healthy cloned cat from adult skin cells of female origin 65 days after embryo transfer. The cloned cats showed genotypes identical to the donor cell lines, indicating that adult somatic cells can be used for feline cloning.

This study was conducted to assess the contents of Web-sourced arthritis information and to determine its influence on arthritis patients and medical practice in Korea.An electronic search was conducted using the word "arthritis". Web sites found in the Korean language were critically assessed according to authorship, the type of publication, contents, financial interests, and the type of financial interest. Questionnaire surveys of arthritis patients and rheumatologists were performed to appraise the impact of the arthritis information on the Web.Among 138 web sites retrieved, 18.8% were classified as advertisement and 44.9% as having financial interests, such as the promotion of products or services. Among 257 arthritis patients surveyed, 28% reported that they searched for arthritis information on the web, and the parameters significantly associated with Internet searching were a younger age, being employed, and having a higher income and a higher education. While the difference in ratings regarding the accuracy of Web-sourced arthritis information between physicians and patients was not significant, only 16.1% of physicians responded that their patients understand the Internet content accurately. Physicians also tended to reply more negatively about the contents and the influence of Web-sourced arthritis information than patients.Analysis of Korean arthritis web sites revealed many sites with financial interests. There was also a discrepancy found between patients and physicians regarding the impact of Web-sourced arthritis information on the doctor-patient relationship. Because the impact of the Internet on health care is expected to increase, physicians need to be prepared to help patients benefit from information obtained from the Internet.

To investigate the clinical significance of anti-nucleosome antibodies in SLE patients lacking anti-double stranded DNA (dsDNA) antibodies.IgG anti-nucleosome antibodies were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) in the sera of SLE patients. Anti-dsDNA antibodies were measured by Farr assays and ELISA, not only in the samples taken for anti-nucleosome testing, but also in sera obtained regularly during the follow-up.Ninety-eight (76.0%) out of 129 patients with SLE had anti-nucleosome antibodies. Twenty-five patients (19.4%) consistently showed little or no anti-dsDNA reactivity during the course of their disease, and among these anti-nucleosome antibodies were present in the sera of 15 (60.0%). Of the patients with anti-dsDNA-negative SLE, renal disorders were present in 8 patients (32.0%), all of whom had anti-nucleosome antibodies. Renal disorders were not found in patients (n = 10) who had neither anti-dsDNA nor anti-nucleosome antibodies. Other autoantibodies such as anti-Ro, anti-Sm and anti-cardiolipin were not associated with renal disorders in this group. The levels of anti-nucleosome antibody strongly correlated with the SLEDAI scores, but inversely correlated with serum complement levels in anti-dsDNA negative SLE patients.Our data suggest that the anti-nucleosome antibody may be a useful marker for diagnosis and activity assessment of anti-dsDNA negative SLE. Anti-nucleosome antibody may be an important factor for renal involvement in this subgroup of patients.

In spite of our increased knowledge of in vitro oocyte maturation techniques, the success rate of obtaining mature canine oocytes in vitro remains very low compared with that for other domestic animals. The inefficient rate of meiotic resumption of canine oocytes is probably due to both the unique reproductive cycle and inappropriate in vitro maturation (IVM) medium. In an unpublished experiment, we found that the concentration of insulin was higher in estrus bitch serum (EBS; 8833 pg/mL) than in dog follicular fluid (DFF; preovulatory follicle, 122 pg/mL), which implies its possible role in the acquisition of oocyte competence. Therefore, in the present study we investigated the effects of supplementing the IVM medium with insulin on the incidence of maturation to metaphase II. Ovaries were collected from various stages of the estrous cycle by ovariohysterectomy, and oocytes with two or more intact cumulus layers and with a diameter >110 �m were selected and used for IVM. Oocytes were cultured in modified synthetic oviduct fluid (2004 Reprod. Nutr. Dev. 44, 105-109) supplemented with 10% EBS, 20 �g/mL estradiol, and different concentrations of insulin (0, 10, 100, or 1000 ng/mL) at 38.5�C, 5% CO2 in air. After 72 h, cumulus cells were removed from around oocytes using a small glass pipette. Denuded oocytes were fixed in 3.7% paraformaldehyde supplemented with 10 �g/mL Hoechst 33342 at room temperature for 40 min. Nuclear status was observed under UV light using a fluorescence microscope. The percentage of oocytes at the metaphase II stage was not different among the four groups 6.8, 1.8, 5.4, and 2.1% in the control, 10, 100, and 1000 ng/mL insulin groups, respectively. The incidence of oocytes with pronuclear-like structures or cleaving beyond the two-cell stage was not significant higher in the 10 and 100 ng/mL insulin treatment groups than in the control and 1000 ng/mL insulin groups 20.0 and 19.6% vs. 6.8 and 6.4%, respectively. These results indicate that the addition of insulin to the in vitro maturation medium of dog oocytes had no effect on the incidence of meiotic maturation to metaphase II, nor did it affect the frequency of occurrence of spontaneous oocyte activation.

The thermally activated flux flow effect has been studied in epitaxial FeSe0.6Te0.4 thin film grown by a PLD method through the electrical resistivity measurement under various magnetic fields for B//c and B//ab. The results showed that the thermally activated flux flow effect is well described by the nonlinear temperature-dependent activation energy. The evaluated apparent activation energy U0(B) is one order larger than the reported results and showed the double-linearity in both magnetic field directions. Furthermore, the FeSe0.6Te0.4 thin film shows the anisotropy of 5.6 near Tc and 2D-like superconducting behavior in thermally activated flux flow region. In addition, the vortex glass transition and the temperature dependence of the high critical fields were determined.
