Abstract

ABSTRACT To effectively develop and utilize high-quality Tianfu broilers, this study evaluated the morphological and structural characteristics of the immune organs of such broilers with different strains (HS1 and HS2) at different developmental stages and analyzed the distribution of mast cells by toluidine blue staining. Moreover, the localization and expression of immunoglobulin, complement C3, C4 and CD3 in immune organs were also detected. The results showed that although there was no significant difference in the development of immune organs in the HS1 and HS2, the number of lymphatic follicles and capsule thickness in the spleen and bursa of Fabricius in HS1 were greater than those in HS2. 2. Associations between air pollutants and blood pressure in an ethnically diverse cohort of adolescents in London, England.

Abstract

Longitudinal evidence on the association between air pollution and blood pressure (BP) in adolescence is scarce. We explored this association in an ethnically diverse cohort of schoolchildren. Sex-stratified, linear random-effects modelling was used to examine how modelled residential exposure to annual average nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) and ozone (O3), measures in μg/m3, associated with blood pressure. Estimates were based on 3,284 adolescents; 80% from ethnic minority groups, recruited from 51 schools, and followed up from 11-13 to 14-16 years old. Ethnic minorities were exposed to higher modelled annual average concentrations of pollution at residential postcode level than their White UK peers. A two-pollutant model (NO2 & PM2.5), adjusted for ethnicity, age, anthropometry, and pubertal status, highlighted associations with systolic, but not diastolic BP. A μg/m3 increase in NO2 was associated with a 0.30 mmHg (95% CI 0.18 to 0.40) decrease in systolic BP for girls and 0.19 mmHg (95% CI 0.07 to 0.31) decrease in systolic BP for boys. In contrast, a 1 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 was associated with 1.34 mmHg (95% CI 0.85 to 1.82) increase in systolic BP for girls and 0.57 mmHg (95% CI 0.04 to 1.03) increase in systolic BP for boys. Associations did not vary by ethnicity, body size or socio-economic advantage. Associations were robust to adjustments for noise levels and lung function at 11-13 years. In summary, higher ambient levels of NO2 were associated with lower and PM2.5 with higher systolic BP across adolescence, with stronger associations for girls.

Abstract

Computer simulations provide virtual hands-on experience when actual hands-on experience is not possible. To use these simulations in medical science, they need to be able to predict the behavior of actual processes with actual patient-specific geometries. Many uncertainties enter in the process of developing these simulations, starting with creating the geometry. The actual patient-specific geometry is often complex and hard to process. Usually, simplifications to the geometry are introduced in exchange for faster results. However, when simplified, these simulations can no longer be considered patient-specific as they do not represent the actual patient they come from. The ultimate goal is to keep the geometries truly patient-specific without any simplification. However, even without simplifications, the patient-specific geometries are based on medical imaging modalities and consequent use of numerical algorithms to create and process the 3D surface. Multiple users are asked to process medical images of a complex geometry. Their resulting geometries are used to assess how the user’s choices determine the resulting dimensions of the 3D model. It is shown that the resulting geometry heavily depends on user’s choices.

Abstract

Laser-driven positron sources, characterized by short pulse width, small focal spot and high energy, are promising for potential applications, e.g. electron–positron collider and positron annihilation spectroscopy. However, the broad divergence angle and wide pulse width during the laser-driven positron transport are extremely unfavorable for achieving high spatiotemporal resolution. In this paper, we propose a novel method to manipulate the positrons by using a left-hand circularly-polarized Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) laser pulse. Using the LG laser with a intensity of $1.2\times10^{21}\,\mathrm{W\,cm}^{-2}$ and a duration of a few cycles, three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations reveal that isotropic hot positrons can be effectively captured, collimated, compressed, and accelerated due to the unique field structure of the LG laser. A high-quality positron bunch is obtained with a peak divergence angle of 1 ^∘ , an average pulse duration of 0.5 fs, a maximum energy of 450 MeV, and a density of 70 times that of the initial electron source. A damping vibration model is also formulated to explain qualitatively the quality improvement of the positrons.

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of supplementing tea polyphenols (TP) in diet of laying hens on yolk cholesterol content and production performance. A total of 1800 Lohmann laying hens aged 48 weeks were randomly allocated to 6 groups. Each group consisted of 6 replicates with 50 layers. The feeding experiment was 4 weeks including one-week acclimatization. Layers fed basal diet supplemented with 0, 150, 200, 250, 300 and 350 mg TP/kg diet, respectively. The results showed that average daily feed intake (ADFI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), average egg weight (AEW), laying rate and the indicators of egg quality were not significantly affected by the diet supplemented with 300 mg/kg TP (p>0.05). Abstract

Currently, the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (henceforth "autism") is 1 in 36, an increasing trend from previous estimates. In 2015, the United States adopted a new version (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision) of the World Health Organization coding system, a standard for classifying medical conditions. Our goal was to examine how the transition to this new coding system impacted autism diagnoses in 10 healthcare systems. We obtained information from electronic medical records and insurance claims data from July 2014 through December 2016 for each healthcare system. We used member enrollment data for 30 consecutive months to observe changes 15 months before and after adoption of the new coding system. Overall, the rates of autism per 1000 enrolled members was increasing for 0- to 5-year-olds before transition to International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision and did not substantively change after the new coding was in place. There was variation observed in autism diagnoses before and after transition to International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision for other age groups. The change to the new coding system did not meaningfully affect autism rates at the participating healthcare systems. The increase observed among 0- to 5-year-olds is likely indicative of an ongoing trend related to increases in screening for autism rather than a shift associated with the new coding.

7. The Freshman Sleep and Health (FRoSH) Study: Examining Sleep and Weight Gain in Incoming College Freshmen

Abstract

Objective: Examine how changes in sleep duration, objectively measured by activity trackers, impact weight gain in incoming college freshman. Participants: Incoming college freshmen, age [greater than equal to] 18. Methods: We measured weight and daily sleep duration before college entry and through the 1st college quarter. Additionally, we examined changes in sleep variability, activity levels and smartphone screen time use as possible predictors of weight gain. Results: 75 participants completed the study. Total sleep duration decreased from 437.9 ± SD 57.3 minutes at baseline to 416.5 ± SD 68.6 minutes by the end of the first quarter (p = 6.6 × 10[superscript -3]). (BMI) did not change significantly in this cohort. Higher sleep variability at baseline and an increase in sleep variability were associated with increases in BMI. Smartphone screen use was note to be high (235.2 ± SD 110.3 minutes/day) at the end of the first quarter. Conclusions: College weight gain may be affected by factors other than sleep duration, including sleep variability.

Abstract

The ACTN3 gene is one of the genes that have a potential influence on physical performance. Studies have shown that the 577R genotype of ACTN3 is more prevalent in sprint athletes, while the 577X genotype is more prevalent in endurance athletes. In swimming, both power and endurance related phenotypes are equally needed for swimmers to excel at the elite level. Therefore, the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism may become a genetic marker for swimmers. The study aimed to examine the association of the ACTN3 R577X genotype with the performance of elite middle-long distance (MLD) swimmers. The distributions of the ACTN3 R577X (rs1815739) genotype and allele were examined in a general population (206) and a group of elite MLD swimmers (160) in China by using PCR-RFLP and TOF. Compared with the general population, the elite MLD swimmers, especially the females, had a higher frequency of the RR genotype. The swimmers had a higher frequency of the R allele than the general population. However, the difference was not statistically significant. After being stratified by performance, the difference of the R allele frequency between the international master athletes and the general population was statistically significant. The elite MLD swimmers had a higher frequency of the RR genotype than the RX+XX genotype compared with the general population. The ACTN3 R577X polymorphism was associated with the performance of elite MLD swimmers in China. The SNP R577X could be used as a biomarker for selecting elite MLD swimmers in China.

9. Genetic analysis of platelet-derived growth factor receptor-like gene (PDGFRL) polymorphism and melanin traits in Lanping black-boned sheep (Ovis aries)

Abstract

In the intricate tapestry of Yunnan Province's biodiversity, the Lanping black-boned sheep (LPBB) emerges as a captivating enigma, distinguished by its profound melanin pigmentation adorning both its skin and its internal organs. Initially cataloged in the 1950s within the confines of Lanping County, this exceptional mammalian species presents a scarcity and uniqueness that extends beyond its geographic origins. Here, we collected 100 blood samples from Lanping black-boned sheep along with 50 samples each from Lanping normal sheep (LPN) and Huize normal sheep (HZN), all sourced from Yunnan Province. Our investigation focused on the association between the platelet-derived growth factor receptor-like gene (PDGFRL) polymorphism and the distinctive melanin characteristics observed in Lanping black-boned sheep. Utilizing UV–visible spectrophotometry, we assessed the melanin indexes present, such as tyrosinase activity and true melanin in the sheep blood, and the results demonstrated a significant elevation in melanin indexes for Lanping black-boned sheep compared to the control group (P<0.05). We also identified three synonymous mutation sites within a partial 1128 bp exon fragment of the gene-encoding PDGFRL (EX2-G408A, EX5-T184C, and EX5-G222T). Notably, Lanping black-boned sheep, harboring genotypes GG, TT, and GG at these specific sites, showcased a pronounced surge in tyrosinase activity, eumelanin / total melanin ratios, and plasma colorimetric values when contrasted with the control group (P<0.05). The discernment of GG, TT, and GG as the prevailing genotypes at their respective genetic loci in Lanping black-boned sheep heralds a breakthrough in our understanding of the genetic markers associated with black pigmentation. However, all three loci are silent mutations and do not alter the phenotypic changes. Whether they affect changes in melanin content through other metabolic pathways requires further study. In conclusion, the PDGFRL gene was silenced by mutations in our study and affected blood melanin levels. However, the gene did not undergo a missense mutation that altered the phenotypic changes, and the exact channel through which the changes in melanin content were affected needs to be further verified.

Abstract

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) has many adverse effects on immunity and metabolic states. However, scarce information is available on its connection with toxicologically relevant proteomics response in marine invertebrates. In this study, GS-MS was employed to determine the bio-accumulated levels of DEHP in clam Venerupis philippinarum. After exposure to 0.4 mg L-1 and 4mg L-1 DEHP, the bio-accumulated DEHP in the clam foot was significantly increased in the first 24 h, and then sharply decreased from 0.203 ± 0.022 μg g-1 to 0.104 ± 0.011 μg g-1 , and from 1.689 ± 0.018 μg g-1 to 1.172 ± 0.012 μg g-1, respectively. Comparative proteomic was conducted to investigate the global protein expression changes towards this contaminant exposure. Twenty-eight proteins with significant differences in abundance were identified and characterized, among them six enzymes related to the glycolysis pathway were suppressed, and two members of TCA cycle were induced. The activity and mRNA expression level of malate dehydrogenase (MDH) were further assessed using qPCR and an enzymatic assay. The MDH activity and mRNA transcript levels were both elevated compared to those in the ethanol control group. Our findings indicated that a DEHP-treated clam modulated host toxicological effect through depressing glycogen synthesis and activating TCA cycle.

Abstract

Improving the understanding of the complex relationship between genetic predispositions, environmental influences, and sociocultural factors in the development and progression of mental illness is crucial for optimizing treatment efficacy and addressing longstanding health disparities. This paper discusses the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of recent advancements in biomedical research, particularly in genome-wide association studies (GWAS), phenome-wide association studies (PheWAS), and genome-wide environment interaction studies (GWEIS). Despite recent scientific progresses, challenges such as inadequate study methodology (e.g., correlational studies) and lack of diversity within study samples persist. Recent discoveries of several genetic variants of diseases, could augment and improve, or even challenge, existing understanding of the onset and management of mental illness. Leveraging real-world data (RWD), including electronic health record data (EHRs) focused on social determinant of health alongside biobank data, offers further opportunities to enhance the understanding of gene-environment interactions and inform efforts for reducing disparities in mental healthcare. Increased knowledge can support timely, holistic, evidence-based, and personalized care. Addressing ELSI considerations and maximizing the use of RWD is essential for advancing ethical and inclusive psychiatric genetics research, ultimately improving patient outcomes and promoting equitable access to evidence-based treatments.

Abstract

Kelvin–Helmholtz waves can be observed frequently at the near-Earth magnetopause and play an important role in the transport of particles, momentum, and energy from the solar wind to the magnetosphere. This work analyzes the occurrence of Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI) at lunar distance magnetopause, which has not been thoroughly studied currently based on Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence, and Electrodynamics of the Moon's Interaction with the Sun satellite observations, and it also investigates the effect of the upstream solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). Statistical results show that (1) the occurrence rate is about 15% of the time at lunar distance, lower than at the flank magnetopause, and (2) the occurrence rate decreases with the magnetoacoustic Mach number, Alfvén Mach number, solar wind velocity, and dynamic pressure but only shows a slightly positive correlation with solar wind density. Unlike at the dayside magnetopause, the occurrence rate of KHI diminishes as the solar wind velocity increases at the lunar distance magnetopause, and (3) the occurrence rate decreases with IMF amplitude and is influenced by IMF orientation. As a function of the IMF clock angle, the occurrence rate reaches its maximum at ∼24% when the clock angle is zero. The statistical results are basically consistent with the currently accepted linear theory of KHI, except for a lower rate for higher-speed solar wind. This work contributes to understanding the excitation and evolution of KHI along the magnetopause and plasma transport process in the tail magnetopause.

Abstract

Thermal healing of focused ion beam-implanted defects in GaN is investigated by off-axis electron holography in TEM. The data reveal that healing starts at temperatures as low as about 250 °C. The healing processes result in an irreversible transition from defect-induced Fermi level pinning near the VB toward a midgap pinning induced by the crystalline-amorphous transition interface. Based on the measured pinning levels and the defect charge states, we identify the dominant defect type to be substitutional carbon on nitrogen sites.

Abstract

Abstract Health systems are essential for suicide risk detection. Most efforts target people with mental health (MH) diagnoses, but this only represents half of the people who die by suicide. This study seeks to discover and validate health indicators of suicide death among those with, and without, MH diagnoses. This case-control study used statistical modeling with health record data on diagnoses, procedures, and encounters. The study included 3,195 individuals who died by suicide from 2000 to 2015 and 249,092 randomly selected matched controls, who were age 18+ and affiliated with nine Mental Health Research Network affiliated health systems. Of the 202 indicators studied, 170 (84%) were associated with suicide in the discovery cohort, with 148 (86%) of those in the validation cohort. Malignant cancer diagnoses were risk factors for suicide in those without MH diagnoses, and multiple individual psychiatric-related indicators were unique to the MH subgroup. Protective effects across MH-stratified models included diagnoses of benign neoplasms, respiratory infections, and utilization of reproductive services. MH-stratified latent class models validated five subgroups with distinct patterns of indicators in both those with and without MH. The highest risk groups were characterized via high utilization with multiple healthcare concerns in both groups. The lowest risk groups were characterized as predominantly young, female, and high utilizers of preventive services. Healthcare data include many indicators of suicide risk for those with and without MH diagnoses, which may be used to support the identification and understanding of risk as well as targeting of prevention in health systems.

Abstract

Abstract A data sample collected with the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1 is used to measure eleven CP violation observables in B ± → Dh ± decays, where h is either a kaon or a pion. The neutral D meson decay is reconstructed in the three-body final states: K ± π ∓ π 0; π + π − π 0; K + K − π 0 and the suppressed π ± K ∓ π 0 combination. The mode where a large CP asymmetry is expected, B ± → [π ± K ∓ π 0] D K ± , is observed with a significance greater than seven standard deviations. The ratio of the partial width of this mode relative to that of the favoured mode, B ± → [K ± π ∓ π 0] D K ± , is R ADS(K) = (1.27 ± 0.16 ± 0.02) × 10 −2. Evidence for a large CP asymmetry is also seen: A ADS(K) = −0.38 ± 0.12 ± 0.02. Constraints on the CKM angle γ are calculated from the eleven reported observables.

Abstract

Abstract The Born cross sections of the processes e + e − → ωπ 0 and e + e − → ωη are measured at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV using a total integrated luminosity of 22.7 fb −1 collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. A simple s −n dependence for the continuum process can describe the measured Born cross sections. No significant contributions from the ψ(4160), Y(4230), Y(4360), ψ(4415), Y(4660) resonances are found, which indicates relative small branching fractions for these resonances into the ωπ 0 and ωη final states.

Abstract

Abstract Using e + e − annihilation data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 6.32 fb −1 collected at the center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we perform an amplitude analysis of the decay D s + $$ {D}_s^{+} $$ → K − K + π + π + π − and determine the relative fractions and phases of different intermediate processes. Absolute branching fraction of D s + $$ {D}_s^{+} $$ → K − K + π + π + π − decay is measured to be (6.60 ± 0.47stat. ± 0.38syst. ) × 10 −3. The dominant intermediate process is D s + $$ {D}_s^{+} $$ → a 1(1260)+ ϕ, ϕ → K − K + , a 1(1260)+ → ρπ + , ρ → π + π − , with a branching fraction of (5.15 ± 0.41stat. ± 0.32syst. ) × 10 −3.

Abstract

Abstract A search for the hadronic decays of the h c meson to the final states p p ¯ $$ p\overline{p} $$ π + π − π 0, p p ¯ η $$ p\overline{p}\eta $$ , and p p ¯ $$ p\overline{p} $$ π 0 via the process ψ(3686) → π 0 h c is performed using (4.48 ± 0.03) × 108 ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay channel h c → p p ¯ η $$ p\overline{p}\eta $$ is observed for the first time with a significance greater than 5σ and a branching fraction of (6.41 ± 1.74 ± 0.53 ± 1.00) × 10 −4, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and that from the branching fraction of ψ(3686) → π 0 h c . Strong evidence for the decay h c → p p ¯ $$ p\overline{p} $$ π + π − π 0 is found with a significance of 4.9σ and a branching fraction of (3.84 ± 0.83 ± 0.69 ± 0.58) × 10 −3. The significances include systematic uncertainties. No clear signal of the decay h c → p p ¯ $$ p\overline{p} $$ π 0 is found, and an upper limit of 6.59 × 10 −4 on its branching fraction is set at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

Predicting within-field crop yield early in the season can help address crop production challenges to improve farmers’ economic return. While yield prediction with remote sensing has been a research aim for years, it is only recently that observations with the suited spatial and temporal resolutions have become accessible to improve crop yield predictions.Here we developed a yield prediction framework that integrates daily high-resolution (3 m) CubeSat imagery into the APSIM crop model. The approach trains a regression model that correlates simulated yield to simulated leaf area index (LAI) from APSIM. That relationship is then employed to determine the optimum date at which the regression best predicts yield from the LAI. Additionally, our approach can forecast crop yield by utilizing a particle filter to assimilate CubeSat-based LAI in the model APSIM to generate yield maps at 3 m several weeks before the optimum regression date. Our method was evaluated for a rainfed site located in the US Corn belt, using a collection of spatially varying yield data. The proposed approach does not need in situ data to rain the regression, with outcomes reporting that even with a single assimilation step, accurate yield predictions were provided up to 21 days before the optimum regression date. The spatial variability of crop yield was reproduced fairly well, with a good correlation against in situ measurements (R2 = 0.73 and RMSE = 1.69), demonstrating that high-resolution yield predictions early in the season have great potential to meet and improve upon digital agricultural goals.

46. Trends in the utilization of psychotropic medications in China from 2018 to 2021

Abstract

Background: Monitoring psychotropic medicine consumption trends can provide information on the extent of pharmacological interventions for mental disorders and availability of psychotropic medicines.Objectives: This study aimed to illustrate the trends in psychotropic drug utilization in China’s hospitals.Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the aggregated monthly psychotropic procurement records of 1009 hospitals from 31 provinces in China from January 2018 to September 2021. Total psychotropic medicine consumption included the sales of antipsychotics, antidepressants, anxiolytics, mood stabilizers, and sedatives or hypnotics. Information, including generic name, procurement amount, dosage form, strength, purchase time, and geographical data, was collected. Population-weighted psychotropic utilization was expressed in defined daily dose per 1000 inhabitants per day (DDD/1000/day).Results: Psychotropic medicine sales increased from 4.5 DDD/1000/day in Q1 2018 to 6.4 DDD/1000/day in Q3 2021; total utilization in China’s hospitals increased by 42.2%. The use of each class of psychotropics showed a gradually increasing trend. Antidepressants were the most consumed psychotropics, accounting for 48.4% of the total psychotropic utilization (3.1/6.4 DDD/1000/day), followed by sedatives or hypnotics (31.3%; 2.0/6.4 DDD/1000/day) and antipsychotics (15.6%; 1.0/6.7 DDD/1000/day). Among all sub-classes of psychotropics, a most significant growth in DDD per 1000 inhabitants per day was seen for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (1.2–1.9 DDD/1000/day), whereas the consumption of typical antipsychotics (from 0.1 to 0.09 DDD/1000/day) and tricyclic antidepressants (from 0.05 to 0.03 DDD/1000/day) decreased during the study period. Psychotropic utilization substantially increased between Q1 2018 and Q3 2021 in regions with different economic levels. In Q3 2021, total psychotropic utilization in secondary and tertiary hospitals was 9.4 DDD/1000/day and 6.0 DDD/1000/day, respectively. Sedatives or hypnotics in secondary hospitals accounted for the largest proportion of utilized psychotropics (43.6%; 4.1/9.4 DDD/1000/day), whereas antidepressants were the most commonly used psychotropic in tertiary hospitals (50.0%, 3.0/6.0 DDD/1000/day).Conclusion: This study showed that despite increases in psychotropic medication use, the consumption of medicines is still much lower than in other countries and regions internationally. With reference to the estimated prevalence of corresponding mental disorders, our study illustrates that a large treatment gap for mental health problems exists in China. In addition, the wide use of psychotropics with weak clinical evidence raises serious concerns regarding rational use. Greater efforts are needed to increase the availability of psychotropic medicines and to facilitate proper psychotropic use.
