Abstract

In this paper the technological aspects of the FAZIA array will be explored. After a productive commissioning phase, FAZIA blocks started to measure and give very useful data to explore the physics of Fermi energy heavy-ion reactions. This was possible thanks to many technical measures and innovations developed in the commissioning phase and tuned during the first experimental campaigns. This paper gives a detailed description of the present status of the FAZIA setup from the electronic and mechanical point of view, trying also to trace a path for new improvements and refinements of the apparatus., 17 pages, 9 figures

2. Development of a radio-frequency quadrupole cooler for high beam currents

Abstract

The SHIRaC prototype is a recently developed radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) beam cooler with an improved optics design to deliver the required beam quality to a high resolution separator (HRS). For an isobaric separation of isotopes, the HRS demands beams with emittance not exceeding 3π mm mrad and longitudinal energy spread ∼1 eV. Simulation studies showed a significant contribution of the buffer gas diffusion, space charge effect and mainly the rf fringe field to degrade the achieved beam quality at the RFQ exit. A miniature rf quadrupole (μRFQ) has been implemented at that exit to remove the degrading effects and provide beams with 1 eV of energy spread and around 1.75π mm mrad of emittance for 4 Pa gas pressure. This solution enables also to transmit more than 60% of the incoming ions for currents up to 1 μA. Detailed studies of this development are presented and discussed in this paper. Transport of beams from SHIRaC towards the HRS has been done with an electrostatic quadrupole triplet. Simulations and first experimental tests showed that more than 95% of ions can reach the HRS. Because SPIRAL-2 beams are of high current and very radioactive, the buffer gas will be highly contaminated. Safe maintenance of the SHIRaC beam line needs exceptional treatment of radioactive contaminants. For that, special vinyl sleep should be mounted on elements to be maintained. A detailed maintenance process will be presented.

Abstract

The MORA (Matter's Origin from the RadioActivity of trapped and oriented ions) project aims at measuring with unprecedented precision the D correlation in the nuclear beta decay of trapped and oriented ions. The D correlation offers the possibility to search for new CP-violating interactions, complementary to searches done at the LHC and with Electric Dipole Moments. Technically, MORA uses an innovative in-trap orientation method which combines the high trapping efficiency of a transparent Paul trap with laser orientation techniques. Abstract

The LPCTrap experiment uses an open Paul trap which was built to enable precision measurements in the beta decay of radioactive ions. The initial goal was the precise measurement of the beta-neutrino angular correlation coefficient in the decay of 6He. Its geometry results from a careful optimization of the harmonic potential created by cylindrical electrodes. It supersedes previously considered geometries that presented a smaller detection solid angle to the beta particle and the recoiling ion. We describe here the methods which were used for the potential optimization, and we present the measured performances in terms of trapping time, cloud size and temperature, and space charge related limits. The properties of the ion cloud at equilibrium are well reproduced by a simple numerical simulation using hard sphere collisions, which additionally gives insights on the trapping loss mechanism. The interpretation for the observed trapping liftetimes is further corroborated by a model recently developed for ion clouds in Paul traps. The open trap shall serve other projects. It is currently used for commissioning purpose in the TRAPSENSOR experiment and is also considered in tests of the Standard Model involving the beta decay of polarized $^{23}$Mg and $^{39}$Ca ion in the frame of the MORA experiment. The latter tests require in-trap polarization of the ions and further optimization of the trapping and detection setup. Based on the results of the simulations and of their interpretations given by the model, different improvements of the trapping setup are discussed., 19 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

The goal of the FAZIA Collaboration is the design of a new-generation 4π detector array for heavy-ion collisions with radioactive beams. This article summarizes the main results of the R&D phase, devoted to the search for significant improvements of the techniques for charge and mass identification of reaction products. This was obtained by means of a systematic study of the basic detection module, consisting of two transmission-mounted silicon detectors followed by a CsI(Tl) scintillator. Significant improvements in ΔE-E and pulse-shape techniques were obtained by controlling the doping homogeneity and the cutting angles of silicon and by putting severe constraints on thickness uniformity. Purposely designed digital electronics contributed to identification quality. The issue of possible degradation related to radiation damage of silicon was also addressed. The experimental activity was accompanied by studies on the physics governing signal evolution in silicon. The good identification quality obtained with the prototypes during the R&D phase, allowed us to investigate also some aspects of isospin physics, namely isospin transport and odd-even staggering. Now, after the conclusion of the R&D period, the FAZIA Collaboration has entered the demonstrator phase, with the aim of verifying the applicability of the devised solutions for the realization of a larger-scale experimental set-up.

Abstract

A new technique of large-area thin ion implanted silicon detectors has been developed within the R&D performed by the FAZIA Collaboration. The essence of the technique is the application of a low-temperature baking process instead of high-temperature annealing. This thermal treatment is performed after B+ ion implantation and Al evaporation of detector contacts, made by using a single adjusted Al mask. Extremely thin silicon pads can be therefore obtained. The thickness distribution along the X and Y directions was measured for a prototype chip by the energy loss of α-particles from 241Am (〈E α 〉 = 5.5 MeV). Preliminary tests on the first thin detector (area ≈ 20 × 20 mm2) were performed at the INFN-LNS cyclotron in Catania (Italy) using products emitted in the heavy-ion reaction 84Kr (E = 35 A MeV) + 112Sn. The ΔE − E ion identification plot was obtained using a telescope consisting of our thin ΔE detector (21 μm thick) followed by a typical FAZIA 510 μm E detector of the same active area. The charge distribution of measured ions is presented together with a quantitative evaluation of the quality of the Z resolution. The threshold is lower than 2 A MeV depending on the ion charge.

Abstract

International audience; FAZIA is a multidetector specifically designed to optimize A and Z reaction product identification in heavy-ion collision experiments. This multidetector is modular and based on three-layer telescopes made of two silicon detectors followed by a thick (10 cm) CsI(Tl) scintillator read-out by a photodiode. Its electronics is fully digital. The goal to push at maximum identification capability while preserving excellent energy resolution, can be achieved by using pulse-shape analysis techniques and by making an intensive use of high-speed flash ADCs. This paper presents the front-end part of the electronics.

Abstract

SPIRAL2/S3; International audience; PILGRIM is a Multi-Reflection Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer currently under development at GANIL for the S3 (Super Separator Spectrometer) collaboration and dedicated to the study of the ground-state properties of exotic nuclei. MR-ToF devices have proven to be effective tools for isobar separation (with mass resolving powers in excess of 105105) and high-precision mass measurements (relative mass uncertainty down to a few 10-710-7) within a few tens of milliseconds. These features make them extremely interesting for ensuring beam purity and accurate mass determinations of very exotic, short lived nuclei. PILGRIM is to be set up in the future low energy branch of the S3-Spiral2 project and may also be used as a beam purifier in front of the double Penning trap PIPERADE at DESIR-Spiral2. An electrostatic 90 degree quadrupole deflector to be placed between an RFQ cooler-buncher (for beam preparation) and PILGRIM is also under study. The study on the deflector focuses on conserving the beam features, especially the time-of-flight spread of the ion bunches which has a direct impact on the resolving power of a multi-reflection device.

Abstract

A compact, quasi-4 pi position sensitive silicon array. TIARA, designed to study direct reactions induced by radioactive beams in inverse kinematics is described here. The Transfer and Inelastic All-angle Reaction Array (TIARA) consists of 8 resistive charge division detectors forming an octagonal barrel around the target and a set of double-sided silicon-strip annular detectors positioned at each end of the barrel. The detector was coupled to the gamma-ray array EXOGAM and the spectrometer VAMOS at the GANIL Laboratory to demonstrate the potential of such an apparatus with radioactive beams. The N-14(d,p)N-15 reaction, well known in direct kinematics, has been carried out in inverse kinematics for that purpose. The observation of the N-15 ground state and excited states at 7.16 and 7.86 MeV is presented here as well as the comparison of the measured proton angular distributions with DWBA calculations. Transferred l-values are in very good agreement with both theoretical calculations and previous experimental results obtained in direct kinematics., The collaboration wishes to thank the GANIL cyclotron operations crew for delivering the 14N beam.Partial support from the European Union under contract No506065 and from the Spanish MEC Grant FPA2005-03993 are also gratefully acknowledged. Abstract

A trap system has been built to perform high-precision β -decay experiments. The system is coupled to the low-energy beam line of the SPIRAL source at GANIL. The continuous ion beam from SPIRAL with energies between 10 and 20 keV is slowed down by means of a buffer-gas-filled RFQ trap and ejected thereafter as short ion bunches into a novel transparent Paul trap. Two pulsed cavities located downstream from the RFQ reduce the energy of the ion bunch down to about a hundred eV for an efficient capture in the Paul trap. We describe here the complete system along with the first results obtained with stable He + 4 , Cl + 35 and Ar + 36 , 40 ions from the SPIRAL ECR source. An overall efficiency of 8.7 ( 8 ) × 10 - 4 is achieved for 4 He + ions under specific conditions.

Abstract

A linear radio frequency quadrupole has been built for the transport, cooling, and bunching of radioactive ions extracted from an ECR source. The device uses the buffer gas cooling technique and was designed such as to extend the technique for the cooling of very light ions using H2 as buffer gas. We describe here the technical specifications of the device and present results of the first tests concerning the cooling and bunching of stable ions.
