AIM To validate the utility of hepatic resection combined with complementary radiofrequency ablation (RFA) compared with resection alone for patients with multiple hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and to compare these results with those of a previous report. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 78 HCC patients with multiple (≤5) tumours who were initially treated with hepatic resection only (Resection group) or with combined hepatic resection and RFA (Combination group) were included. Overall and disease-free survival were analysed. RESULTS There were 21 women and 57 men with a median age of 72.5 (64.3–76.8) years. Fifty-three patients were treated with resection alone and 25 received combination therapy. The 3-, 5-, and 7-year cumulative overall survival rates were 81.2%, 68.2%, and 57.1%, respectively, in the Resection group, and 81.3%, 59.6%, and 42.4%%, respectively, in the Combination group (hazard ratio [HR], 1.462; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.682–3.136; p=0.329). The 1-, 3-, and 5-year cumulative disease-free survival rates were 61.4%, 45.7%, and 39.8%, respectively, in the Resection group, and 53.1%, 18.6%, and 0%, respectively, in the Combination group (HR, 2.080; 95% CI, 1.157–3.737; p=0.014). The overall survival rate was not significantly different between the Resection and Combination groups in patients within the up-to-seven HCC criteria (n=56; HR, 2.101; 95% CI, 0.805–5.486; p=0.130) or those beyond these criteria (n=22; HR, 0.804; 95% CI, 0.197–3.286; p=0.761). CONCLUSIONS The combination of hepatic resection and RFA therapy may be an effective strategy for HCC patients with multiple tumours.

We found four series of harmonically related lines in IRC +10216 with the Yebes 40 m and IRAM 30 m telescopes. The first series corresponds to a molecule with a rotational constant, B, of 1448.5994±0.0013 MHz and a distortion constant, D, of 63.45±1.15 Hz and covers upper quantum numbers from Ju = 11 up to 33 (B1449). The second series is fitted with B = 1446.9380±0.0098 MHz and D = 91±23 Hz and covers upper quantum numbers from Ju = 11 up to 17 (B1447). The third series is fitted with B = 598.7495±0.0011 MHz and D = 6.13±0.43 Hz and covers quantum numbers from Ju = 26 up to 41 (B599). Finally, the frequencies of the last series of lines can be reproduced with B = 594.3176±0.0026 MHz and D = 4.92±1.16 Hz (B594). The large values of D point toward four metal-bearing carriers. After exploring all plausible candidates containing Na, Al, Mg, and other metals, our ab initio calculations indicate that the cations MgC4H+, MgC3N+, MgC6H+, and MgC5N+ must be the carriers of B1449, B1447, B599, and B594, respectively. These cations could be formed by the radiative association of Mg+ with C4H, C3N, C6H, and C5N, respectively. We calculated the radiative association rate coefficient of Mg+ with C4H, C3N, C6H, and C5N and incorporated them in our chemical model. The results confirm that the Mg-bearing cations can be formed through these radiative association reactions in the outer layers of IRC +10216. This is the first time that cationic metal-bearing species have been found in space. These results provide a new paradigm on the reactivity of ionized metals with abundant radicals and open the door for further characterization of similar species in metal-rich astrophysical environments.

Ξ− atomic X-ray spectroscopy is one of the most useful methods for investigation of the Ξ–nucleus strong interaction. Since the X-ray energy is shifted and/or broadened due to the Ξ–nucleus strong interaction compared to those calculated from electromagnetic interaction alone, the measurement of the energy shift, ΔE, and the width, Γ, give us information on the Ξ–nucleus potential. A serious problem in the measurement is the significant background derived from in-flight Ξ− decay. A novel method of identifying stopped Ξ− events using the nuclear emulsion was developed to realize the first Ξ− atomic X-ray spectroscopy experiment as the J-PARC E07 experiment, which also aimed at searching for ΛΛ and Ξ− hypernuclei in the emulsion. The X-rays emitted from Ξ− Br and Ξ− Ag atoms were measured using germanium detectors. No clear peaks were observed in the obtained spectra. However, we succeeded in reducing the background to 1/170 by this method employing coincidence measurements using nuclear emulsion and X-ray detectors.

We report on the detection of a series of six lines in the ultra-deep Q-band integration toward IRC+10216 carried out with the Yebes 40m telescope, which are in harmonic relation with integer quantum numbers J from 12 to 18. After a detailed analysis of all possible carriers, guided by high-level quantum chemical calculations, we conclude that the lines belong to HMgCCCN, named hydromagnesium cyanoacetylide. The rotational temperature and column density derived for HMgCCCN are 17.1 +/- 2.8K and (3.0 +/- 0.6) e12 cm-2, respectively. The observed abundance ratio between MgCCCN and HMgCCCN is 3. In addition, we report the discovery in space, also toward IRC+10216, of sodium cyanoacetylide, NaCCCN, for which accurate laboratory data are available. 5 pags., 3 figs., 2 tabs., We report the discovery of the C5H+ cation toward TMC-1 with the QUIJOTE line survey. Four lines from J = 7 - 6 up to J = 10 - 9 have been identified in perfect harmonic frequency relation that can be fit with B = 2411.94397 ± 0.00055 MHz and D = 138 ± 3 Hz. The standard deviation of the fit is 4.4 kHz. After discarding potential candidates, C5H- among them, we conclude that the carrier is C5H+, for which accurate ab initio calculations provide B = 2410.3 MHz. We also report for the first time in a cold starless core the detection of the C3H+ cation. The column densities we derive for C5H+ and C3H+ are (8.8 ± 0.5)×1010 cm-2 and (2.4 ± 0.2)×1010 cm-2, respectively. Hence, the C5H+/C3H+ abundance ratio is 3.7 ± 0.5. The present paper discusses seismic behaviour of multi-tier pagoda temple. The seismic behaviour was examined by different pushover analysis techniques including adaptive pushover analysis. The case study objective is a five-tier pagoda. The studied pagoda is built of timber frameworks and masonry walls. Masonry is composed of burnt solid bricks and earthen mortar. The pushover analyses are conducted, taking into account frictional behaviour between timber and masonry. The research challenges two tasks. A first task deals with experiments on interface behaviour between timber and masonry in earthen mortar. The study of the discussed interface behaviour is not straightforward since few tests have been conducted on similar subjects. In the present study, direct shear tests are performed. A second task coves pushover analyses of the five-tier pagoda by means of FE analysis. The paper provides useful experimental data of interface behaviour between timber and masonry in earthen mortar and also suggests efficient strategies of seismic assessment of pagoda-type structures.

Using the Yebes 40m and IRAM 30m radiotelescopes, we detected two series of harmonically related lines in space that can be fitted to a symmetric rotor. The lines have been seen towards the cold dense cores TMC-1, L483, L1527, and L1544. High level of theory ab initio calculations indicate that the best possible candidate is the acetyl cation, CH(3)CO(+), which is the most stable product resulting from the protonation of ketene. We have produced this species in the laboratory and observed its rotational transitions J(u) = 10 up to J(u) = 27. Hence, we report the discovery of CH(3)CO(+) in space based on our observations, theoretical calculations, and laboratory experiments. The derived rotational and distortion constants allow us to predict the spectrum of CH(3)CO(+) with high accuracy up to 500 GHz. We derive an abundance ratio N(H(2)CCO)/N(CH(3)CO(+))~44. The high abundance of the protonated form of H(2)CCO is due to the high proton affinity of the neutral species. The other isomer, H(2)CCOH(+), is found to be 178.9 kJ mol(−1) above CH(3)CO(+). The observed intensity ratio between the K=0 and K=1 lines, ~2.2, strongly suggests that the A and E symmetry states have suffered interconversion processes due to collisions with H and/or H(2), or during their formation through the reaction of [Formula: see text] with H(2)CCO.

We report the detection in TMC-1 of the protonated form of C(3)S. The discovery of the cation HC(3)S(+) was carried through the observation of four harmonically related lines in the Q band using the Yebes 40m radiotelescope, and is supported by accurate ab initio calculations and laboratory measurements of its rotational spectrum. We derive a column density N(HC(3)S(+)) = (2.0 ± 0.5) × 10(11) cm(-2), which translates to an abundance ratio C(3)S/HC(3)S(+) of 65 ± 20. This ratio is comparable to the CS/HCS(+) ratio (35 ± 8) and is a factor of about ten larger than the C(3)O/HC(3)O(+) ratio previously found in the same source. However, the abundance ratio HC(3)O(+)/HC(3)S(+) is 1.0 ± 0.5, while C(3)O/C(3)S is just ~ 0.11. We also searched for protonated C(2)S in TMC-1, based on ab initio calculations of its spectroscopic parameters, and derive a 3σ upper limit of N(HC(2)S(+))≤ 9×10(11) cm(-2) and a C(2)S/HC(2)S(+) ≥ 60. The observational results are compared with a state-of-the-art gas-phase chemical model and conclude that HC(3)S(+) is mostly formed through several pathways: proton transfer to C(3)S, reaction of S(+) with c-C(3)H(2), and reaction between neutral atomic sulfur and the ion C(3)H(+) (3).

5 pags., 4 figs., 3 tabs., Cyclic C5H (c-C5H), the radical formed by substituting an ethynyl group CCH for the hydrogen atom in the c-C3H radical, has been detected for the first time in the space. The c-C5H species is an isomer of the well-known linear radical l-C5H and is 6 kcal mola 1 less stable. A total of 17 rotational transitions were detected for the c-C5H species in TMC-1 within the 31.0- 50.3 GHz range using the Yebes 40m radio telescope. We derive a column density of (9.0 ± 0.9) a-1010 cma 2 for c-C5H. Additionally, we observed 12 lines for l-C5H and derive a column density for it of (1.3 ± 0.3) a - 1012 cma 2, which results in an abundance ratio c-C5H/l-C5H of 0.069. This is in sharp contrast with the value found for the analogue system c-C3H/l-C3H, whose ratio is 5.5 in TMC-1. Background Blood pressure (BP) variability has reportedly been a risk factor for various clinical events. To clarify the influence of BP visit‐to‐visit variability on adverse events in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, a post hoc analysis of the J‐RHYTHM Registry was performed. Methods and Results Of 7406 outpatients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation from 158 institutions, 7226 (age, 69.7±9.9 years; men, 70.7%), in whom BP was measured 4 times or more (14.6±5.0 times) during the 2‐year follow‐up period or until occurrence of an event, constituted the study group. SD and coefficient of variation of BP values were calculated as BP variability. Thromboembolism, major hemorrhage, and all‐cause death occurred in 110 (1.5%), 121 (1.7%), and 168 (2.3%) patients, respectively. When patients were divided into quartiles of systolic BP‐SD (P =0.015 for thromboembolism; HR, 2.60, 95% CI, 1.36–4.97, P =0.004 for major hemorrhage; and HR, 1.85, 95% CI, 1.11–3.07, P =0.018 for all‐cause death) after adjusting for components of the CHA 2 DS 2 ‐VASc score, warfarin and antiplatelet use, atrial fibrillation type, BP measurement times, and others. These findings were consistent when BP‐coefficient of variation was used instead of BP‐SD. Conclusions Systolic BP visit‐to‐visit variability was significantly associated with all adverse events in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Further studies are needed to clarify the causality between BP variability and adverse outcomes in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Using the Yebes 40m and IRAM 30m radio telescopes, we detected a series of harmonically related lines with a rotational constant B (0)=4460.590±0.001 MHz and a distortion constant D (0)=0.511 ±0.005 kHz towards the cold dense core TMC-1. High-level-of-theory ab initio calculations indicate that the best possible candidate is protonated tricarbon monoxide, HC(3)O(+). We have succeeded in producing this species in the laboratory and observed its J (u)-J (l) = 2-1 and 3-2 rotational transitions. Hence, we report the discovery of HC(3)O(+) in space based on our observations, theoretical calculations, and laboratory experiments. We derive an abundance ratio N(C(3)O)/N(HC(3)O(+))~7. The high abundance of the protonated form of C(3)O is due to the high proton affinity of the neutral species. The chemistry of O-bearing species is modelled, and predictions are compared to the derived abundances from our data for the most prominent O-bearing species in TMC-1.

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a Ξ^{-} absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-Λ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as Ξ^{-}+^{14}N→_{Λ}^{10}Be+_{Λ}^{5}He. For the binding energy of the Ξ^{-} hyperon in the Ξ^{-}-^{14}N system a value of 1.27±0.21 MeV was deduced. The energy level of Ξ^{-} is likely a nuclear 1p state which indicates a weak ΞN-ΛΛ coupling.

Summary The purpose was to determine if increasing serum 25(OH)D and calcium in postmenopausal women increased skeletal muscle size, strength, balance, and functional task performance while decreasing muscle fatigue. PCSA of the vastus lateralis increased and ascent of stairs time decreased after 6 months of increased serum 25(OH)D. Purpose The Institute of Medicine recommends ≥ 20 ng/ml of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] for bone and overall health. Serum 25(OH)D levels have been associated with physical performance, postural sway, and falls. The purpose of this study was to determine if increasing postmenopausal women’s serum 25(OH)D levels from 20–30 ng/ml to 40–50 ng/ml improved skeletal muscle size, strength, balance, and functional performance while decreasing skeletal muscle fatigue. Methods Twenty-six post-menopausal women (60–85 years old) with baseline serum 25(OH)D levels between 20 and 30 ng/ml were recruited. Oral over-the-counter (OTC) vitamin D3 and calcium citrate were prescribed to increase subjects’ serum 25(OH)D to levels between 40 and 50 ng/ml, serum calcium levels above 9.2 mg/dl, and PTH levels below 60 pg/ml, which were confirmed at 6 and 12 weeks. Outcome measures assessed at baseline and 6 months included muscle physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA), muscle strength, postural balance, time to perform functional tasks, and muscle fatigue. Repeated measures comparisons between baseline and follow-up were performed. Results Nineteen subjects completed the study. One individual could not afford the time commitment for the repeated measures. Three individuals did not take their vitamin D as recommended. Two subjects were lost to follow-up (lack of interest), and one did not achieve targeted serum 25(OH)D. Vastus lateralis PCSA increased (p = 0.007) and ascent of stair time decreased (p = 0.042) after 6 months of increasing serum 25(OH)D levels from 20–30 ng/ml to 40–50 ng/ml. Isometric strength was unchanged. Anterior-posterior center of pressure (COP) excursion and COP path length decreased (p < 0.1) albeit non-significantly, suggesting balance may improve from increased serum 25(OH)D and calcium citrate levels. Conclusions Several measures of muscle structure and function were sensitive to elevated serum 25(OH)D and calcium levels indicating that further investigation of this phenomenon in post-menopausal women is warranted.

The flow model in metal cutting is applied to cold forging for forming a H-shaped double cup by moving the bottom of an ironed cup to a predetermined position. In the proposed process, the cutting flow occurs between the internal corners of the upper cup and the lower cup and the tool pressure is lower than half of the plasticity coefficient of the cup material. Products are formed without defects when the ratio of the depth of cut to the bottom thickness of the cup is larger than the critical value related to the corner radius of the ironed cup.

6 pags., 3 figs., 2 tabs., We report the detection in TMC-1 of the cation HCCS+ (X 3Σ-), which is the protonated form of the widespread radical CCS. This is the first time that a protonated radical has been detected in a cold dark cloud. Twenty-six hyperfine components from twelve rotational transitions have been observed with the Yebes 40 m and IRAM 30m radio telescopes. We confidently assign the characteristic rotational spectrum pattern to HCCS+ based on the good agreement between the astronomical and theoretical spectroscopic parameters. The column density of HCCS+ is (1.1 ± 0.1)×1012 cm-2, and the CCS/HCCS+ abundance ratio is 50 ± 10, which is very similar to that of CS/HCS+ (35 ± 8) and CCCS/HCCCS+ (65 ± 20). Screw compressors have been widely investigated for many applications including air and process gas compression, and refrigeration systems. There is however a surprising lack of literature for low pressure ratio application of these machines, defined here as application requiring volume ratios in the range of 1-1.5. The aim of this paper is to characterise the loss mechanisms for oil injected screw compressors with low volume index (defined as the ratio of maximum to minimum volumes during the internal compression process), V i. This knowledge will be applied in the future to identify appropriate optimisation of rotor profiles and porting geometry for a range of low-pressure ratio applications. The current study involves the use of chamber models to investigate the influence of wrap angles and porting. This initial analysis will be developed in future work to allow a detailed parametric study of the factors that limit the performance of low V i oil-injected screw compressors.

A certain relationship between XPA gene mutations and the severity of symptoms has been observed in patients with xeroderma pigmentosum group A (XP-A). Patients with mutations within the DNA-binding domain usually exhibit severe symptoms, whereas splicing mutations in the same domain sometimes cause very mild symptoms. This inconsistency can be explained by a small amount of functional XPA protein produced from normally spliced transcripts. We herein report the case of an adult Japanese patient with XP-A with unusually mild symptoms. We identified a homozygous c.529G>A mutation in exon 4 of the XPA gene, which resulted in aberrant splicing with a 29-bp deletion in exon 4 causing a frameshift. Intact mRNA was observable, but a Western blot analysis failed to detect any normal XPA protein. We therefore evaluated the DNA repair capacity in normal cells in which the XPA expression was artificially diminished. The repair capacity was still present in cells with trace levels of the XPA protein. The repair capacity of the cells derived from our patient with mild symptoms was poor by comparison, but still significant compared with that of the cells derived from a patient with XP-A with severe symptoms. These results provide strong evidence that a trace level of XPA protein can still exert a relatively strong repair capacity, resulting in only a mild phenotype.

We report on the detection of two series of harmonically related doublets in IRC +10216. From the observed frequencies, the rotational constant of the first series is B = 1380.888 MHz and that of the second series is B = 1381.512 MHz. The two series correspond to two species with a (2)Σ electronic ground state. After considering all possible candidates, and based on quantum chemical calculations, the first series is assigned to MgC(3)N and the second to MgC(4)H. For the latter species, optical spectroscopy measurements support its identification. Unlike diatomic metal-containing molecules, the line profiles of the two new molecules indicate that they are formed in the outer layers of the envelope, as occurs for MgNC and other polyatomic metal-cyanides. We also confirm the detection of MgCCH that was previously reported from the observation of two doublets. The relative abundance of MgC(3)N with respect to MgNC is close to one while that of MgC(4)H relative to MgCCH is about ten. The synthesis of these magnesium cyanides and acetylides in IRC +10216 can be explained in terms of a two-step process initiated by the radiative association of Mg(+) with large cyanopolyynes and polyynes followed by the dissociative recombination of the ionic complexes.
