Abstract

In comparison with most medical imaging techniques, Nuclear Medical imaging has traditionally been plagued by inferior image quality as a result of the limitations imposed by mechanical collimation, which is necessary to form an image using single-photon emitters. To a large extent, this basic limitation may be overcome with the use of positron-emitting radiotracers to detect the two photons that are emitted following positron annihilation. Although CdZnTe semiconductor detectors are renowned for their increased count-rate capabilities and improved energy and spatial resolution, they have some limitations regarding timing and charge collection efficiency. The CdZnTe rise-time has two components: electrons, and hole-induced charge collection. Since the holes move much slower than the electrons, and because there is an equal absorption probability at all depths and energies (in the region of 511 keV), the different slopes between the rise time and the timing signal, vary dramatically. These slopes are mostly influenced by the ‘small pixel effect’. This effect is relative to the amount of charge collected and therefore, a different pulse shape slope will be obtained for different charges collected. The current study directly examines the timing limitations of measuring coincidence events in CdZnTe-pixelated detectors. The results show that it is possible to use these detectors for positron emission applications.

2. Annual regrowth and edible biomass of two species of Atriplex and of Cassia sturtii after browsing

Abstract

Atriplex nummularia, Atriplex canescens and Cassia sturtii were planted in thenorthern Negev in 1984 in six replicates at five planting densities: 625, 1111, 2500, 4444 and 10,000 shrubs ha −1 . They were left undisturbed for 3 years until July 1987, following which they were summer browsed by sheep and goats until the shrubs were completely defoliated, and summer browsed again 1988, 1990 and 1991. A. nummularia was superior to the other species. It had the highest total and edible biomass after 3 years of undisturbed growth and the best absolute recovery after browsing. Neither of the Atriplex species recovered the initial standing biomass recorded before browsing in 1987, and there was a serious decline in the regrowth of leaf biomass. Cassia sturtii recovered its initial standing biomass at the two highest planting densities but failed to do so at the other densities.

Abstract

The 355-nm transient absorption of polyimide thin films has been measured following excitation withsubablative, 24-ps long, 355-nm laser pulses. The 355-nm absorption increases by 25% following 355-nm, 20 mJ/cm2 excitation and recovers with a fast time constant ≈34 ps, and a slow time constant which is much longer than 6 ns. The data are fitted by a three-level rate equation model incorporating the temperature dependence of the ground state absorption coefficient. The fast component is attributed to the decay ofS 1 and the slow component results from increased ground state absorption caused by a laser-induced temperature rise. The nonlinear intensity dependence is attributed to excited state (S 1) absorption. These results indicate the importance of considering the dynamic absorption in modelling ablation.

Abstract

The LIGO interferometers are operating as gravitational wave observatories, with a noise level near an order of magnitude of the goal and the first scientific data recently taken. This data has been analyzed for four different categories of gravitational wave sources; millisecond bursts, inspiralling binary neutron stars, periodic waves from a known pulsar, and stochastic background. Research and development is also underway for the next generation LIGO detector, Advanced LIGO.

Abstract

We report on a search for gravitational waves from binary black hole inspirals in the data from the second science run of the LIGO interferometers. The search focused on binary systems with component masses between 3 and 20 solar masses. Optimally oriented binaries with distances up to 1 Mpc could be detected with efficiency of at least 90%. We found no events that could be identified as gravitational waves in the 385.6 hours of data that we searched., 18 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We search for coincident gravitational wave signals from inspiralling neutron star binaries using LIGO and TAMA300 data taken during early 2003. Using a simple trigger exchange method, we perform an inter-collaboration coincidence search during times when TAMA300 and only one of the LIGO sites were operational. We find no evidence of any gravitational wave signals. We place an observational upper limit on the rate of binary neutron star coalescence with component masses between 1 and 3 M_sun of 49 per year per Milky Way equivalent galaxy at a 90% confidence level. Abstract

We use data from the second science run of the LIGO gravitational-wave detectors to search for the gravitational waves from primordial black hole (PBH) binary coalescence with component masses in the range 0.2--$1.0 M_\odot$. The analysis requires a signal to be found in the data from both LIGO observatories, according to a set of coincidence criteria. No inspiral signals were found. Assuming a spherical halo with core radius 5 kpc extending to 50 kpc containing non-spinning black holes with masses in the range 0.2--$1.0 M_\odot$, we place an observational upper limit on the rate of PBH coalescence of 63 per year per Milky Way halo (MWH) with 90% confidence., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Abstract

We use 373 hours ($\approx$ 15 days) of data from the second science run of the LIGO gravitational-wave detectors to search for signals from binary neutron star coalescences within a maximum distance of about 1.5 Mpc, a volume of space which includes the Andromeda Galaxy and other galaxies of the Local Group of galaxies. This analysis requires a signal to be found in data from detectors at the two LIGO sites, according to a set of coincidence criteria. The background (accidental coincidence rate) is determined from the data and is used to judge the significance of event candidates. No inspiral gravitational wave events were identified in our search. Using a population model which includes the Local Group, we establish an upper limit of less than 47 inspiral events per year per Milky Way equivalent galaxy with 90% confidence for non-spinning binary neutron star systems with component masses between 1 and 3 $M_\odot$., 20 pages, 12 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Abstract

We perform a search for gravitational wave bursts using data from the second science run of the LIGO detectors, using a method based on a wavelet time-frequency decomposition. This search is sensitive to bursts of duration much less than a second and with frequency content in the 100-1100Hz range. It features significant improvements in the instrument sensitivity and in the analysis pipeline with respect to the burst search previously reported by LIGO. Improvements in the search method allow exploring weaker signals, relative to the detector noise floor, while maintaining a low false alarm rate, O(0.1) microHz. The sensitivity in terms of the root-sum-square (rss) strain amplitude lies in the range of hrss~10^{-20} - 10^{-19}/sqrt(Hz) No gravitational wave signals were detected in 9.98 days of analyzed data. We interpret the search result in terms of a frequentist upper limit on the rate of detectable gravitational wave bursts at the level of 0.26 events per day at 90% confidence level. We combine this limit with measurements of the detection efficiency for given waveform morphologies in order to yield rate versus strength exclusion curves as well as to establish order-of-magnitude distance sensitivity to certain modeled astrophysical sources. Both the rate upper limit and its applicability to signal strengths improve our previously reported limits and reflect the most sensitive broad-band search for untriggered and unmodeled gravitational wave bursts to date., 23 pages, 14 figures, to be submitted to Phys Rev D

Abstract

We have performed a search for bursts of gravitational waves associated with the very bright Gamma Ray Burst GRB030329, using the two detectors at the LIGO Hanford Observatory. Our search covered the most sensitive frequency range of the LIGO detectors (approximately 80-2048 Hz), and we specifically targeted signals shorter than 150 ms. Our search algorithm looks for excess correlated power between the two interferometers and thus makes minimal assumptions about the gravitational waveform. We observed no candidates with gravitational wave signal strength larger than a pre-determined threshold. We report frequency dependent upper limits on the strength of the gravitational waves associated with GRB030329. Near the most sensitive frequency region, around 250 Hz, our root-sum-square (RSS) gravitational wave strain sensitivity for optimally polarized bursts was better than h_RSS = 6E-21 Hz^{-1/2}. Abstract

We report on the first joint search for gravitational waves by the TAMA and LIGO collaborations. We looked for millisecond-duration unmodelled gravitational-wave bursts in 473 hr of coincident data collected during early 2003. No candidate signals were found. We set an upper limit of 0.12 events per day on the rate of detectable gravitational-wave bursts, at 90% confidence level. From simulations, we estimate that our detector network was sensitive to bursts with root-sum-square strain amplitude above approximately 1-3x10^{-19} Hz^{-1/2} in the frequency band 700-2000 Hz. We describe the details of this collaborative search, with particular emphasis on its advantages and disadvantages compared to searches by LIGO and TAMA separately using the same data. Benefits include a lower background and longer observation time, at some cost in sensitivity and bandwidth. We also demonstrate techniques for performing coincidence searches with a heterogeneous network of detectors with different noise spectra and orientations. These techniques include using coordinated signal injections to estimate the network sensitivity, and tuning the analysis to maximize the sensitivity and the livetime, subject to constraints on the background., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, to be submitted to Phys Rev D. Abstract

We perform a wide parameter space search for continuous gravitational waves over the whole sky and over a large range of values of the frequency and the first spin-down parameter. Our search method is based on the Hough transform, which is a semi-coherent, computationally efficient, and robust pattern recognition technique. We apply this technique to data from the second science run of the LIGO detectors and our final results are all-sky upper limits on the strength of gravitational waves emitted by unknown isolated spinning neutron stars on a set of narrow frequency bands in the range 200-$400 $Hz. Abstract

We place direct upper limits on the amplitude of gravitational waves from 28 isolated radio pulsars by a coherent multi-detector analysis of the data collected during the second science run of the LIGO interferometric detectors. These are the first direct upper limits for 26 of the 28 pulsars. We use coordinated radio observations for the first time to build radio-guided phase templates for the expected gravitational wave signals. The unprecedented sensitivity of the detectors allow us to set strain upper limits as low as a few times $10^{-24}$. These strain limits translate into limits on the equatorial ellipticities of the pulsars, which are smaller than $10^{-5}$ for the four closest pulsars., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Data collected by the GEO 600 and LIGO interferometric gravitational wave detectors during their first observational science run were searched for continuous gravitational waves from the pulsar J1939+2134 at twice its rotation frequency. Two independent analysis methods were used and are demonstrated in this paper: a frequency domain method and a time domain method. Both achieve consistent null results, placing new upper limits on the strength of the pulsar’s gravitational wave emission. A model emission mechanism is used to interpret the limits as a constraint on the pulsar’s equatorial ellipticity.

Abstract

For 17 days in August and September 2002, the LIGO and GEO interferometer gravitational wave detectors were operated in coincidence to produce their first data for scientific analysis. Although the detectors were still far from their design sensitivity levels, the data can be used to place better upper limits on the flux of gravitational waves incident on the earth than previous direct measurements. Abstract

We report on a search for gravitational waves from coalescing compact binary systems in the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. The analysis uses data taken by two of the three LIGO interferometers during the first LIGO science run and illustrates a method of setting upper limits on inspiral event rates using interferometer data. The analysis pipeline is described with particular attention to data selection and coincidence between the two interferometers. We establish an observational upper limit of $\mathcal{R}, Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We present the analysis of between 50 and 100 hrs of coincident interferometric strain data used to search for and establish an upper limit on a stochastic background of gravitational radiation. These data come from the first LIGO science run, during which all three LIGO interferometers were operated over a 2-week period spanning August and September of 2002. The method of cross-correlating the outputs of two interferometers is used for analysis. We describe in detail practical signal processing issues that arise when working with real data, and we establish an observational upper limit on a f^{-3} power spectrum of gravitational waves. Our 90% confidence limit is Omega_0 h_{100}^2 < 23 in the frequency band 40 to 314 Hz, where h_{100} is the Hubble constant in units of 100 km/sec/Mpc and Omega_0 is the gravitational wave energy density per logarithmic frequency interval in units of the closure density. This limit is approximately 10^4 times better than the previous, broadband direct limit using interferometric detectors, and nearly 3 times better than the best narrow-band bar detector limit. As LIGO and other worldwide detectors improve in sensitivity and attain their design goals, the analysis procedures described here should lead to stochastic background sensitivity levels of astrophysical interest., 26 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

The quality of a nuclear medicine image depends on the sensitivity, the scatter rejection efficiency and on system spatial resolution. The currently used NaI gamma cameras suffer from relatively poor energy resolution, leading to low Compton scatter rejection and low-contrast images. A large effort is currently invested in replacing the current technology with CdZnTe technology. We performed an experimental study revealing the local and global sensitivity and the energy resolution of a CdZnTe monolithic array. A correlation between experimental measurements and a Monte-Carlo simulation, using the noise equivalent count criteria, provided a qualitative comparison between NaI and a future performances of CdZnTe gamma cameras. The effect of incomplete charge collection due to mutual induction in neighboring cells and hole trapping currently limits the usefulness of the CdZnTe technology as compared to NaI technology. Improved crystal quality and more complicated electronics are required in order commercially implement this technology in the field of nuclear medicine.

Abstract

This work examines the properties of CdZnTe pixellated detectors, in terms of coincidence-timing performances. Through this review it can be see that one of the strongest effects over the CdZnTe timing is the amount of charge collected, or in other words, the influence of the 'small pixel effect.' A figure is presented which gives a simple illustration of this mechanism. This effect is highly noticed when measuring coincidence signals from a single pixel, positioned either at the center of the CdZnTe-detector edge. The CZT coincidence jitter time with the NaI(Tl)+PMT FWHM value varies from a minimum of 4 ns up to 84 ns. Variations in FWHM, as mentioned, are due to the number of CdZnTe pixels connected and their position. The more pixels added to the pixels sum, the more dark current was added to the total signal. The dark current (system noise) increases the jitter time resolution. A trade off between the 'small pixel effect' and the dark current noise was found at a nine (3x3) pixel sum. Signal from the pixels at the crystal edge have more noise deriving from surface currents. The current source is mainly from the broken crystallographic structure. The edge current increases the system noise increasing in time jitter resolution.

Abstract

The commonly use Anger camera provides a relatively simple, large-scale solution to nuclear medicine imaging. However it has some disadvantages: count-rate limitation, nonlinear spatial resolution and relatively poor energy contrast. Many efforts have been invested over the past few years aiming at replacing the current Anger technology with various new technologies. One of the most promising technology currently under investigation is based on room temperature solid-state CdZnTe (CZT). The pixellated structure of a CZT camera naturally provides an improved count rate capability and intrinsic spatial resolution. The direct conversion of gamma photon to charge-carriers, provides an improved energy resolution thus may lead to better scattering events rejection and a better image contrast. A major limitation of the CZT technology is the lower sensitivity due to limitation in fabrication of thick crystals and incomplete charge collection. An additional reduction in sensitivity is due to charge carrier share between neighboring pixels. Several small area planar CZT camera were built and tested over the years, but the expected advantages of the CZT technology over the current NaI technology has not been realized yet. The present work compares between the performances of the NaI(Tl) Anger camera and a CZT camera.

Abstract

Laser photodisruption is a routinely performed clinical procedure in intraocular microsurgery of post-cataract membranes, anterior synechies and iridectomies. Damage ranges of several millimeters in diameter, however, limit the use of nanosecond photodisruption close to delicate structures, e.g., in the posterior vitreous. Multiple ps-laser pulses of about 100 microJ pulse energy were used to produce disruptive effects in the anterior lens capsule in rabbit eyes in vivo. Ophthalmoscopical and morphological investigations of these effects were compared with those of minimal ns-disruptions. The direct tissue separation effects as well as the collateral damage zones are about one order of magnitude smaller if ps-laser pulses are used. Minimal sizes of disruptive effects are about 50 microns to 150 microns and 500 microns to 1000 microns for ps- and ns-pulses, respectively. The substantial improvement of spatial confinement of ps-photodisruption enables increased precision of intraocular laser microsurgery and opens up new areas of clinical application in structures like the cornea, anterior chamber angle, and crystalline lens.

22. Mechanistic investigation of doxycycline photosensitization by picosecond-pulsed and continuous wave laser irradiation of cells in culture

Abstract

In order to elucidate the photophysical mechanisms of cellular phototoxicity sensitized by doxycycline, MGH-U1 human bladder carcinoma cells in vitro were treated with 20.7 microM doxycycline and irradiated with either a pulsed (lambda = 355 nm, pulse duration = 24 ps) or a continuous wave (lambda = 351 nm) laser. Cumulative radiant exposure and irradiance were systematically varied in experiments with both lasers. Phototoxicity was assessed by epifluorescence microscopy of unfixed cells using rhodamine 123 labeling of mitochondria. With the continuous wave source, the cumulative radiant exposure required for induction of phototoxic injury was independent of irradiance. With the 24-ps-pulsed source, a significantly lower cumulative radiant exposure was required to induce the phototoxicity when the peak irradiance was 5.8 x 10(7) or 1.3 x 10(8) watts cm-2 compared with when peak irradiance was either lower (6.0 x 10(6) watts cm-2) or higher (7.6 x 10(8) watts cm-2). The measured fluorescence lifetimes of doxycycline in buffered saline solution were longer than the laser pulse duration of 24 ps. The increased efficiency of photosensitization at the optimal peak irradiance in the ps domain appears to result from sequential multiphoton absorption involving higher excited states of the singlet manifold. At the highest irradiance studied, on the other hand, reduced efficiency of photosensitization is attributed to increased photodegradation of doxycycline from higher excited states by processes such as photoionization. A model consistent with these observations is presented along with calculations, based on simple rate equations, that fit the essentials of the proposed model.

Abstract

In the long-baseline laser interferometers that are now under construction to measure gravitational waves, the alignment of the optical components with respect to the incoming laser beam is crucial for maintaining maximum phase sensitivity. We present a basic formalism to calculate the effects of misalignment and beam distortions analytically in an arbitrarily complex optical system, including coupled cavities and Michelson interferometer configurations coupled with cavities. The electromagnetic field is decomposed into a superposition of higher-order Gaussian modes, while misaligned and distorting optical components along with free-space propagators are represented by matrix operators that act on the state vectors in this basis. We show how to deduce useful alignment signals generally, in order to design angular control systems.

Abstract

Luminescence in photoexcited Zn/sub 1-x/Mn/sub x/Te has been studied for three dilute alloy compositions (x = 0.001, 0.011, and 0.016) under a wide range of excitation and in zero external magnetic field. We find that the bound-exciton localization energy is composition dependent, evidently due to an exchange-induced contribution by the paramagnetic Mn ions. Under high-intensity excitation we have observed electron-hole plasma (EHP) emission from all the samples studied. For the line-shape analysis of the EHP emission, a simple model is introduced that takes alloy-compositional fluctuations into account. The EHP emission for the x = 0.001 material yields plasma parameters which are consistent with the formation of an electron-hole liquid, while in samples with higher Mn concentration there is no evidence for such formation.

Abstract

We show examples of recent spectroscopic studies of CdTe/(Cd, Mn)Te and ZnSe/(Zn, Mn)Se multiquantum wells (MQWs). These strained-layer structures are sources of intense excitonic luminescence at low temperatures. Dependence of luminescence spectra on temperature and the especially pronounced influence of an external magnetic field are strong evidence that the emission is dominated by localized excitons which particularly for the (111) oriented CdTe/(Cd, Mn)Te MQWs are attached to the heterointerfaces. For the (100) ZnSe/(Zn, Mn)SeMQWs the luminescence amplitude typically decreases rapidly with temperature from 2 to 100 K indicating only a weakly localized exciton. Picosecond time-resolved experiments have yielded a direct measurement of exciton energy-loss rates and lifetimes which are found to depend on quantum well width, magnetic field, and on temperature.

Strained layer ZnSe Zn 1− x Mn x Se artificial microstructures have been successfully grown recently by molecular beam epitaxial techniques. Optical properties of these multiple quantum wells (MQW) and superlattice structures have been investigated by continuous wave and transient spectroscopies. Kinetics of the “blue” exciton and “yellow” Mn-transition are described by a thermodynamic rate equation approach.

Abstract

Transient photomodulation techniques with picosecond laser pulses have been applied to make contact with excitonic scattering through several nP transitions of the yellow exciton series in ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}$O. We show first how this experimental approach can be generally useful in the dynamical study of collisionally broadened free-exciton resonances, and then argue that the observed time-dependent spectra give direct information about the energy-dependent character of nP-1S exciton scattering events in ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}$O under conditions of weak photoexcitation considered here.

Abstract

Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) intensity oscillations have been observed in II–VI compound semiconductors. The observation of RHEED intensity oscillations has provided the opportunity to fabricate ultrathin layered structures with one monolayer resolution; these structures involve ZnSe, the dilute magnetic semiconductor (Zn, Mn)Se, and the “hypothetical” zincblende magnetic semiconductor MnSe. The RHEED intensity oscillations enabled the growth of a series of two-dimensional magnetic semiconductor structures consisting of one, three, and four monolayers of zincblende MnSe separated by approximately 45 A of ZnSe. Photoluminescence studies in the presence of an external magnetic field have been employed to explore the effects of reduced dimensionality on the antiferromagnetic ordering of zincblende MnSe. This paper describes the RHEED intensity oscillations which have been observed in ZnSe and MnSe and the magnetic behaviour of the resultant 2D superlattice structures.

Abstract

Hypothetical zincblende MnSe has been grown using the non-equilibrium growth technique of molecular beam epitaxy. The magnetic semiconductor MnSe has been incorporated into a number of ZnSe MnSe superlattice structures which have been grown containing one, three, four, and ten monolayers of MnSe. Magneto-optical measurements provide evidence for the expected antiferromagnetic phase of the “thick” or bulk (10 monolayers) zincblende MnSe. In sharp contrast, as the layer thickness is reduced, a transition to paramagnetic behavior in the MnSe is observed. To facilitate the growth of a monolayer of MnSe, reflection high energy electron diffraction intensity oscillations were used. The growth, the microstructural and the magneto-optical characterization of these novel “2D” magnetic superlattices will be discussed.

Time‐resolved photoluminescence at low temperatures has been studied in ZnSe/(Zn,Mn)Se multiple quantum wells and (Zn,Mn)Se thin films, with emphasis on determination of the exciton formation rate and the energy transfer to the Mn‐ion d‐electron states, the latter contributing to the dominant yellow luminescence in (Zn,Mn)Se. In the quantum well samples which show efficient exciton (blue) emission, the capture of electron‐hole pairs to the ZnSe layers on a picosecond timescale is sufficiently rapid to substantially reduce the yellow luminescence.

Abstract

Metastable zinc‐blende MnSe has been grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The magnetic semiconductor has been incorporated into three novel superlattice structures which include a binary ZnSe/MnSe superlattice, a comb superlattice, and a ZnSe/(Zn,Mn)Se superlattice structure consisting of ZnSe wells perturbed by the insertion of ultrathin layers (two to three monolayers) of MnSe. Reflection high‐energy electron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveal the zinc‐blende crystal structure of the MnSe layers. Preliminary optical measurements show agreement with anticipated exciton emission energies; such spectra show large magnetic field induced shifts indicating that, although MnSe is antiferromagnetic, these ‘‘two‐dimensional’’ magnetic sheets exhibit paramagnetic behavior.

Abstract

Time-resolved spectroscopy of the recombining exciton state in a highly strained II-VI semiconductor superlattice CdTe/ZnTe reveals strong localization effects at low lattice temperatures. Such phenomena originate naturally from small deviations in structural perfection on a monolayer scale in a strained superlattice with a small valence band offset. The quasi-2D aspect enhances the localization phenomena further.

34. Effects of nonlinear phase shift due to stimulated Brillouin scattering in single-mode fibers

Abstract

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is one of the most dominant nonlinear effects in coherent transmission through single-mode fibers. The gain of SBS is always accompanied by a nonlinear phase shift in accordance with the Kramers-Kronig relations between the real and imaginary parts of the nonlinear index of refraction. Such a phase shift may lead to distortion of signals in a coherent transmission line. We investigated the frequency-to-amplitude modulation conversion of a frequency modulated signal counterpropagated by a strong pump wave. For a frequency separation between pump and signal wave corresponding to the frequency of the acoustic phonons (~20 GHz at a wavelength of 820 nm) a strong AM signal was detected. This AM signal was measured as a function of the frequency separation for different pump intensities and parameters of the modulation. Results for fibers with different index profiles leading to a different Brillouin interaction bandwidth are presented. These results are in good agreement with an exact analytical model.

35. Kinetics of Energy Relaxation and Localization in II-VI Compound Semiconductor Quantum Well Structures

Abstract

With emerging new semiconductor superlattice structures it is important to evaluate their characteristics with emphasis on interfacial quality, particularly in the limit of very thin constituent layers (< 100 A). We report here on transient luminescence studies of new II-VI compound semiconductors quantum well structures, with two examples based on the ZnSe/(Zn,Mn)Se and CdTe/ZnTe heterostructures (1). In this work we have employed a tunable high repetition rate picosecond source in the blue and red regions of the spectrum. An optimum compromise for temporal broadening in the spectrosopic measurements was reached by using a spectrometer with a pair of gratings in the subtractive mode, enjoined with a Hamamatsu synchroscan streak camera. In this way a temporal/spectral resolution of approximately of 10 psec/5 A was achieved. As a consequence, time-resolved spectra from the quantum well structures has yielded direct information of key energy relaxation and localization processes of excitons.

Abstract

In recent years, both passive and injection modelocking has been applied to the multiatmospheric CO2-laser for generation of subnanosecond pulses of high power radiation at the 10.6 pm wavelength, thus taking advantage of the strongly pressure broadened bandwidth (1,2). On the other hand, continuous wavelength tuning over significant range from 9 to 11 μm of the freerunning laser can be readily obtained by operating the laser in the 10 atm pressure range. In spite of the many potential and attractive applications, for example to time-resolved spectroscopy of molecules, there appears to be no reported success of short pulse generation with such wavelength tunability. We have combined in a simple scheme elements of both forced and passive modelocking to provide a versatile source with good tuning characteristics. The difficulties with reliability in modelocking which are generally connected with the relatively high gain and its short lifetime in high pressure lasers were here reduced by additional external optical modulation of absorption losses in intracavity p-Ge.

With tunable short pulse laser sources it has now become possible to examine the kinetics of excitons in semiconductors with detail not possible previously. Here we illustrate the point in the case of excitonic phenomena at low densities for three compound semiconductors, Cu2O, GaSe, and Cd1−xMnxTe, the range of phenomena varying from energy-dependent free exciton collisions to thermalization processes characteristic of localized excitons.

The nonlinear phase change accompanying the gain induced by stimulated Brillouin scattering is investigated in single-mode fiber. A frequency-modulated signal, when counterpropagated by a strong pump wave, is converted to an amplitude-modulated signal owing to this nonlinear phase change. The measured amplitude modulation is in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. It is at its maximum for a frequency difference between the pump and signal waves that corresponds to the Brillouin Stokes shift ±0.5 full width at half-maximum of the Brillouin-gain bandwidth (90 MHz at λ = 820 nm). This conversion may lead to distortion in coherent transmission systems and Brillouin amplifiers.

A selective comparison is made of the influence of heterointerfaces on recently observed optical properties of CdTe/(Cd,Mn)Te and ZnSe/(Zn,Mn)Se superlattices in the quantum well limit. Specifically, we draw new conclusions and insight of the role of heterointerfaces on exciton localization phenomena in these strained layer structures. Amongst these II–VI superlattices, large variations are encountered which appear at least in part to be connected with interface related disorder.

Abstract

We place direct upper limits on the amplitude of gravitational waves from 28 isolated radio pulsars by a coherent multidetector analysis of the data collected during the second science run of the LIGO interferometric detectors. These are the first direct upper limits for 26 of the 28 pulsars. We use coordinated radio observations for the first time to build radio-guided phase templates for the expected gravitational-wave signals. The unprecedented sensitivity of the detectors allows us to set strain upper limits as low as a few times 10(-24). These strain limits translate into limits on the equatorial ellipticities of the pulsars, which are smaller than 10(-5) for the four closest pulsars.

Abstract

We evaluated the performance of polished mirror surfaces for the TAMA interferometric gravitational wave detector by comparing the experimental results with a wave-front tracing simulation. The TAMA mirror surfaces were polished to a roughness of a few nanometer rms. We confirmed that these polished mirrors do not limit the present TAMA sensitivity and that the target shot-noise sensitivity will be achieved with these mirrors, even if a power-recycling technique is introduced in the next stage of the TAMA.

Abstract

Laser photodisruption is a routinely performed clinical procedure in intraocular microsurgery of post-cataract membranes, anterior synechies and iridectomies. Damage ranges of several millimeters in diameter, however, limit the use of nanosecond photodisruption close to delicate structures, e.g., in the posterior vitreous. Multiple ps-laser pulses of about 100 microJ pulse energy were used to produce disruptive effects in the anterior lens capsule in rabbit eyes in vivo. Ophthalmoscopical and morphological investigations of these effects were compared with those of minimal ns-disruptions. The direct tissue separation effects as well as the collateral damage zones are about one order of magnitude smaller if ps-laser pulses are used. Minimal sizes of disruptive effects are about 50 microns to 150 microns and 500 microns to 1000 microns for ps- and ns-pulses, respectively. The substantial improvement of spatial confinement of ps-photodisruption enables increased precision of intraocular laser microsurgery and opens up new areas of clinical application in structures like the cornea, anterior chamber angle, and crystalline lens.

Abstract

When a picosecond light pulse is incident upon a turbid medium such as tissue, the temporal distribution of diffusely reflected and transmitted photons depends on the optical absorption and scattering properties of the medium. From diffusion theory it is possible to derive analytic expressions for the pulse shape in terms of the optical interaction coefficients of a homogeneous semi-infinite medium. Experimental tests of this simple model in tissue-simulating liquid phantoms of different geometries are presented here. The results of these tests show that, in a semi-infinite phantom, the application of the diffusion model provides estimates of the absorption and transport-scattering coefficients that are accurate to better than 10%. Comparable accuracy was also obtained with this simple model for finite slab, cylindrical, and spherical volumes as long as the objects were of sufficient size. For smaller volumes the absorption coefficient was overestimated because of the significant loss of photons at the bounda ries of the object.

Abstract

In order to elucidate the photophysical mechanisms of cellular phototoxicity sensitized by doxycycline, MGH-U1 human bladder carcinoma cells in vitro were treated with 20.7 microM doxycycline and irradiated with either a pulsed (lambda = 355 nm, pulse duration = 24 ps) or a continuous wave (lambda = 351 nm) laser. Cumulative radiant exposure and irradiance were systematically varied in experiments with both lasers. Phototoxicity was assessed by epifluorescence microscopy of unfixed cells using rhodamine 123 labeling of mitochondria. With the continuous wave source, the cumulative radiant exposure required for induction of phototoxic injury was independent of irradiance. With the 24-ps-pulsed source, a significantly lower cumulative radiant exposure was required to induce the phototoxicity when the peak irradiance was 5.8 x 10(7) or 1.3 x 10(8) watts cm-2 compared with when peak irradiance was either lower (6.0 x 10(6) watts cm-2) or higher (7.6 x 10(8) watts cm-2). The measured fluorescence lifetimes of doxycycline in buffered saline solution were longer than the laser pulse duration of 24 ps. The increased efficiency of photosensitization at the optimal peak irradiance in the ps domain appears to result from sequential multiphoton absorption involving higher excited states of the singlet manifold. At the highest irradiance studied, on the other hand, reduced efficiency of photosensitization is attributed to increased photodegradation of doxycycline from higher excited states by processes such as photoionization. A model consistent with these observations is presented along with calculations, based on simple rate equations, that fit the essentials of the proposed model.
