Abstract

The Tunka-Grande experiment is a scintillation array with about 0.5 km$^2$ sensitive area at Tunka Valley, Siberia, for measuring charged particles and muons in extensive air showers (EASs). Tunka-Grande is optimized for cosmic ray studies in the energy range 10 PeV to about 1 EeV, where exploring the composition is of fundamental importance for understanding the transition from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays. This paper attempts to provide a synopsis of the current results of the experiment. In particular, the reconstruction of the all-particle energy spectrum in the range of 10 PeV to 1 EeV based on experimental data from four observation seasons is presented.

Abstract

The physical motivations, present status, main results in study of cosmic rays and in the field of gamma-ray astronomy as well future plans of the TAIGA-1 (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) project are presented. The TAIGA observatory addresses ground-based gamma-ray astronomy and astroparticle physics at energies from a few TeV to several PeV, as well as cosmic ray physics from 100 TeV to several EeV. The pilot TAIGA-1 complex is located in the Tunka valley, 50 km west from the southern tip of the lake Baikal.

Abstract

The corrected dependence of the mean depth of the EAS maximum $X_{max}$ on the energy was obtained from the data of the Tunka-133 array for 7 years and the TAIGA-HiSCORE array for 2 years. The parameter $\langle\ln A\rangle$, characterizing the mean mass compositon was derived from these results. The differential energy spectrum of primary cosmic rays in the energy range of $2\cdot 10^{14}$ – $2\cdot 10^{16}$ eV was reconstructed using the new parameter $Q_{100}$ the Cherenkov light flux at the core distance 100 m. Change of the parameter for the energy reconstuction for the TAIGA-HiSCORE from $Q_{200}$ to $Q_{100}$ provides a decreasing energy threshold for the spectrum to about 200 TeV.

Abstract

The TAIGA astroparticle observatory is progressing with the deployment of new detector stations. The Tunka-Grande — scintillation counter array of the observatory expands with the new TAIGA-Muon stations. Several simulation studies were conducted for optimisation of the new station positioning and performance. Extensive air showers induced by gamma quanta or a proton in the range from 100 TeV to 1 PeV at a zenith angle of 0° were used for these studies. Based on the developed simulation, the capabilities of identification of high energy extensive air showers were studied. The soil thickness, the detector and station positions, the lowest measurable energy range of the cosmic rays, and different methods of air shower identification were investigated.

Abstract

The TAIGA experiment in Tunka valley is expanding the present scintillation detector array with new TAIGA-Muon detector stations. A simulation model was developed for optimization of the layout of the new stations and study of the identification performance of the array. The extensive air showers (EASs) were simulated with the CORSIKA simulation tool, and the detector response was simulated with the GEANT4 package. EASs induced by gamma quanta or protons in the energy range from 1 PeV to 10 PeV and the zenith angle range from 0° to 45°, are used for these studies. For the identification of high energy extensive air showers, a method based on a neural network was suggested. With this method, the proton identification efficiency is more than 90%, while the gamma identification efficiency not less than 50%.

Abstract

Objectives of the TAIGA Astrophysical complex include the study of the flux of charged cosmic rays and diffuse gamma rays with energies above 100 TeV. This complex is located in the Tunka Valley about 50 km from Lake Baikal at the site of the Tunka-133 Cherenkov facility. TAIGA includes the TAIGA-HiSCORE wide-angle Cherenkov array, the network of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (TAIGA-IACT), the Tunka-Grande and TAIGA-Muon scintillation arrays. In this work, we present the results of an analysis of the joint events of the Tunka-Grande scintillation array and TAIGA-HiSCORE and Tunka-133 Cherenkov facilities. The results verify sufficient accuracy of the scintillation experiment for the hybrid study of mass composition of cosmic rays and gamma-hadron separation.

Abstract

The Tunka-Grande array is part of a single experimental complex, which also includes the Tunka-133 and TAIGA-HiScORE (High Sensitivity COsmic Rays and gamma Explorer) wide-angle Cherenkov arrays, TAIGA-IACT array (Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope) and TAGA-MUON scintillation array. This complex is located in the Tunka Valley (Buryatia Republic, Russia), 50 km from Lake Baikal. It is designed to study the energy spectrum and the mass composition of charged cosmic rays in the energy range 100 TeV - 1000 PeV, to search for diffuse gamma rays above 100 TeV and to study local sources of gamma rays with energies above 30 TeV. This report outlines 3 key points. The first is the description of the Tunka-Grande scintillation array. The second one presents the computer simulation strategy of the Tunka Grande array based on the Geant4 software. The third one is devoted to the prospects for future research in the field of cosmic ray physics and gamma-ray astronomy using simulation results.

Abstract

In the paper we present our simulation strategy of the Tunka-Grande, TAIGA-Muon, and TAIGA-HiSCORE arrays in the light of the problem of separation astrophysical high-energy gamma rays from the cosmic ray background. The paper contains a description of our simulation method, based on Geant4 and CORSIKA codes. We also present the prospect of future research with TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic rays and Gamma Astronomy) with using the simulation results.

Abstract

The Tunka-Grande scintillation array is part of the TAIGA Gamma Observatory. It is intended for investigation of energy spectrum and mass composition of primary cosmic rays in the energy range 10 PeV–10 EeV and the search for diffuse cosmic gamma rays. The TAIGA-HiSCORE Cherenkov array aims at observing gamma-rays with the energy from 1 TeV. TAIGA-Muon low-threshold scintillation detector array is a network of surface and underground detectors for registration charge particles of EAS. Currently, 3 clusters have been deployed. The first cluster is running in test mode. It is planed that in the future the total area of the TAIGA-Muon will be about 2000 sq. m. and it will search astrophysical gamma-rays in the energy range from 100 TeV together with the Tunka-Grande scintillation array and the Cherenkov experiments of the TAIGA Gamma Observatory. To evaluate the possibility of join operation Tunka-Grande, TAIGA-Muon and TAIGA-HiSCORE, a simulation was performed using the CORSIKA and Geant4 software packages. The status of model-based studies is presented and assessed the prospects for joint operation of the arrays.

Abstract

The problem of chemical composition below the knee in the cosmic-ray energy spectrum has not yet been solved due to low statistics collected from direct experiments. In the HiSCORE experiment the lateral distribution functions (LDF) of Cherenkov light of EASs with energy greater than hundreds of TeV can be measured in detail for millions of individual events. A full steepness of LDF is sensitive to the depth of shower maximum and as a result to primary particle type. In this paper, we developed a parametric method of separation between heavy and light groups of nuclei using the ’knee-like’ approximation of LDF and taking into account measurement uncertainty.

Abstract

Objective: To describe 2 patients with traumatic neuromas of the intratemporal facial nerve in the absence of trauma., Study Design: Retrospective case review., Setting: Tertiary care referral center., Patients: Patients included underwent resection of an intratemporal facial nerve mass. Upon pathologic evaluation, the patients were found to have traumatic neuromas of the facial nerve., Intervention(s): Patients underwent resection of an intratemporal facial traumatic neuroma. Histopathologic evaluation was performed including an immunohistochemistry evaluation., Results: Two patients were identified with intratemporal facial nerve traumatic neuromas. The patients had no significant history of trauma or chronic inflammatory process. Pathologic evaluations, including immunohistochemistry, of the excised masses were consistent with traumatic neuromas. All tumors were noted to have a disorganized collection of axons and were not consistent with the expected diagnosis of schwannoma. Tumors involved the tympanic and vertical segments of the facial nerve. A cavernous angioma was found within one mass and is thought to be the etiology of neuroma formation., Conclusion: Traumatic neuromas are possible in the intratemporal facial nerve in the absence of trauma. A cavernous angioma of the facial nerve is a newly described possible cause of traumatic neuroma formation.

Abstract

Melioidosis, an infection caused by the gram-negative bacillus Burkholderia pseudomallei, is endemic to Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. Human infection is acquired through contact with contaminated water via percutaneous inoculation. Clinical manifestations range from skin and soft tissue infection to pneumonia with sepsis. We report a case of a man who was taken as a prisoner of war by the Japanese during World War II who presented with a nonhealing ulcer on his right hand 62 years after the initial exposure.

Abstract

Presented is a comprehensive program designed to isolate human cytokine genes and investigate their relative induction, and to analyze cytokine activities in cell culture, animal tumor models, and human clinical trials. Human cytokine cDNAs have been isolated from a cDNA library made from normal human peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs) treated with Sendai virus and the relative induction of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), alpha and gamma interferons (IFN-alpha, IFN-gamma), and interleukin-1 beta IL-1 beta) genes has been analyzed. In the Sendai virus-induced PBL system, IL-1 beta mRNA was shown to be approximately twofold higher than TNF or IFN-alpha mRNA whereas IFN-gamma mRNA was 50-100-fold lower than TNF or IFN-alpha mRNA. The cytotoxic activity of TNF was analyzed on several cell lines and IFN-alpha and IFN-gamma were shown to potentiate TNF cytotoxicity about 2-200-fold depending on cell lines. The LD50 for recombinant TNF in BALB/c mice was determined to be 6 X 10(7) U/kg and the therapeutic dose of recombinant TNF in sarcoma 180 bearing BALB/c mice was 3 X 10(5) U/kg, indicating a wide therapetic index. Phase I clinical trials of recombinant TNF given I.V. indicated a tolerated dose of 150,000 U/kg with biphasic half-life (T-1/2) of 2 and 31 min following TNF injection. Phase II trials of TNF and trials of TNF combined with IFN-alpha are in progress. These studies indicate that cytokines such as TNF and IFN-alpha are subject to similar induction systems, potentiate each other's activities, and can be tolerated at specific doses for potential therapeutic use.
