Abstract: Aims. With the next generation of large surveys poised to join the ranks of observational cosmology in the near future, it is important to explore their potential synergies and to maximize their scientific outcomes. In this study, we aim to investigate the complementarity of two upcoming space missions: Euclid and the China Space Station Telescope (CSST), both of which will be focused on weak gravitational lensing for cosmology. In particular, we analyze the photometric redshift (photo-z) measurements by combining NUV, 2006;gy bands from CSST with the VIS, Y,2006;J,2006;H bands from Euclid, and other optical bands from the ground-based Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and Dark Energy Survey. We also consider the advantages of combining the two space observational data in simplifying image deblending. For Euclid, weak lensing measurements use the broad optical wavelength range of 550-900 nm, for which chromatic point-spread function (PSF) effects are significant. For this purpose, the CSST narrow-band data in the optical can provide valuable information for Euclid to obtain more accurate PSF measurements and to calibrate the color and color-gradient biases for galaxy shear measurements., Methods. We created image simulations, using the Hubble Deep UV data as the input catalog, for different surveys and quantified the photo-z performance using the EAZY template fitting code. For the blending analyses, we employed high-resolution HST-ACS CANDELS F606W and F814W data to synthesize mock simulated data for Euclid, CSST, and an LSST-like survey. We analyzed the blending fraction for different cases as well as the blending effects on galaxy photometric measurements. Furthermore, we demonstrated that CSST can provide a large enough number of high signal-to-noise ratio multi-band galaxy images to calibrate the color-gradient biases for Euclid., Results. The sky coverage of Euclid lies entirely within the CSST footprint. The combination of Euclid with the CSST data can thus be done more uniformly than with the various ground-based data that are part of the Euclid survey. Our studies show that by combining Euclid and CSST, we can reach a photo-z precision of sigma(NMAD)0.04 and an outlier fraction of eta 2.4% at the nominal depth of the Euclid Wide Survey (VIS24.5 AB mag). For CSST, including the Euclid Y,& 2006;J,& 2006;H bands reduces the overall photo-z outlier fraction from similar to 8.5% to 2.4%. For z & 2004;>& 2004;1, the improvements are even more significant. Because of the similarly high resolutions, the data combination of Euclid and CSST can be relatively straightforward for photometry measurements. On the other hand, to include ground-based data, sophisticated deblending utilizing priors from high-resolution space observations are required. The multi-band data from CSST are very helpful in controlling the chromatic PSF effect for Euclid VIS shear measurements. The color-gradient bias for Euclid galaxies with different bulge-to-total flux ratio at different redshifts can be well calibrated to the level of 0.1% using galaxies from the CSST deep survey.

Abstract: The Euclid mission will observe well over a billion galaxies out to $z\sim6$ and beyond. This will offer an unrivalled opportunity to investigate several key questions for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. The first step for many of these studies will be the selection of a sample of quiescent and star-forming galaxies, as is often done in the literature by using well known colour techniques such as the `UVJ' diagram. However, given the limited number of filters available for the Euclid telescope, the recovery of such rest-frame colours will be challenging. We therefore investigate the use of observed Euclid colours, on their own and together with ground-based u-band observations, for selecting quiescent and star-forming galaxies. The most efficient colour combination, among the ones tested in this work, consists of the (u-VIS) and (VIS-J) colours. We find that this combination allows users to select a sample of quiescent galaxies complete to above $\sim70\%$ and with less than 15$\%$ contamination at redshifts in the range $0.7565\%$ completeness level and contamination below 20$\%$ at $1, Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: This paper presents the ``First Epoch'' sample from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS). The VVDS goals, observations, data reduction with VIPGI, and redshift measurement with KBRED are discussed. Data have been obtained with the VIsible Multi Object Spectrograph (VIMOS) on the ESO-VLT UT3, allowing to observe ~600 slits simultaneously at R~230. A total of 11564 objects have been observed in the VVDS-02h and VVDS-CDFS Deep fields over a total area of 0.61deg^2, selected solely on the basis of apparent magnitude 17.5 1.4. The survey reaches a redshift measurement completeness of 78% overall (93% including less reliable objects), with a spatial sampling of the population of galaxies of 25% and ~30% in the VVDS-02h and VVDS-CDFS. The redshift accuracy measured from repeated observations with VIMOS and comparison to other surveys is ~276km/s. From this sample we present for the first time the redshift distribution of a magnitude limited spectroscopic sample down to IAB=24. The redshift distribution has a median of z=0.62, z=0.65, z=0.70, and z=0.76, for magnitude limited samples with IAB 23.5, probing the bright star forming population of galaxies. This sample provides an unprecedented dataset to study galaxy evolution over 90% of the life of the universe

Abstract: {This paper presents the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey around the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). We have measured 1599 new redshifts with VIMOS on the European Observatory Very Large Telescope - UT3, in an area 21x21.6 arcmin^2, including 784 redshifts in the Hubble Space Telescope - Advanced Camera for Surveys GOODS area. 30% of all objects with I_AB=24 have been observed independently of magnitude, indicating that the sample is purely magnitude limited. We have reached an unprecedented completeness level of 88% in terms of the ratio of secure measurements vs. observed objects, while 95% of all objects have a redshift measurement. A total of 1452 galaxies, 139 stars, 8 QSOs have a redshift identification, 141 of these being unsecure measurements. The redshift distribution down to I_AB=24 is peaked at a median redshift z=0.73, with a significant high redshift tail extending up to ~4. Several high density peaks in the distribution of galaxies are identified. In particular, the strong peak at z=0.735 contains more than 130 galaxies in a velocity range +/-2000 km/s distributed all across the transverse ~20 h^-1 Mpc of the survey. Abstract: This paper presents a detailed comparison between high-redshift observations from the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) and predictions from the Munich semi-analytical model of galaxy formation. In particular, we focus this analysis on the magnitude, redshift, and colour distributions of galaxies, as well as their clustering properties. We constructed 100 quasi-independent mock catalogues, using the output of the semi-analytical model presented in De Lucia & Blaizot (2007).We then applied the same observational selection function of the VVDS-Deep survey, so as to carry out a fair comparison between models and observations. We find that the semi-analytical model reproduces well the magnitude counts in the optical bands. It tends, however, to overpredict the abundance of faint red galaxies, in particular in the i' and z' bands. Model galaxies exhibit a colour bimodality that is only in qualitative agreement with the data. In particular, we find that the model tends to overpredict the number of red galaxies at low redshift and of blue galaxies at all redshifts probed by VVDS-Deep observations, although a large fraction of the bluest observed galaxies is absent from the model. Abstract: Euclid-VIS is the large format visible imager for the ESA Euclid space mission in their Cosmic Vision program, scheduled for launch in 2020. Together with the near infrared imaging within the NISP instrument, it forms the basis of the weak lensing measurements of Euclid. VIS will image in a single r+i+z band from 550-900 nm over a field of view of ~0.5 deg2. By combining 4 exposures with a total of 2260 sec, VIS will reach to V=24.5 (10σ) for sources with extent ~0.3 arcsec. The image sampling is 0.1 arcsec. VIS will provide deep imaging with a tightly controlled and stable point spread function (PSF) over a wide survey area of 15000 deg2 to measure the cosmic shear from nearly 1.5 billion galaxies to high levels of accuracy, from which the cosmological parameters will be measured. In addition, VIS will also provide a legacy dataset with an unprecedented combination of spatial resolution, depth and area covering most of the extra-Galactic sky. Abstract: We discuss the first results obtained on the study of a sample of high-z galaxies (2 < z < 7), using the gravitational amplification effect in the core of lensing clusters. Sources are located close to the critical lines in clusters with well constrained mass distributions, and selected through photometric redshifts, computed on a large wavelength domain, and lens inversion techniques.

Abstract: Using the first-epoch data from the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS), we investigate the evolution of the projected two-point correlation function of galaxies between z ∼ 1 and the present epoch. For the global galaxy population we do not find strong variations of clustering with redshift. However, dependence of clustering on intrinsic luminosities and stellar masses of galaxies evolves significantly during this period. We observe more close pairs for the most luminous and (less distinctly) most massive objects at z ∼ 1 as compared to what is seen locally, resulting in a non–power-law shape of their correlation function, with an upturn on small scales. This effect can be modeled within the framework of the halo occupation distribution models and leads to the conclusion that at z ∼ 1 we are possibly observing a population of luminous and not very massive satellite galaxies that occupy the most massive dark-matter halos—an effect that is not seen locally.

Abstract: The VIMOS VLT Deep Survey is enabling to trace from one single survey the star formation history in the Universe over 12 billion years of evolution. We find that the star formation rate is strongly linked to the different types of galaxies. While the Luminosity Density of irregular-like galaxies decreased by more than a factor 3.5 from z = 1.2 to z = 0.2, the LD for early-type galaxies increased by a factor 1.7. Star formation happened in several phases, strongly luminosity dependent, with star formation gradually shifting from the first massive galaxies to less massive systems. The peak in SFR at z = 3.5 is identified with the end of the mass assembly of the most luminous galaxies (M-AB(1500 angstrom) < -21). We use the SWIRE Spitzer-IRAC observations of the VVDS-02h field to assemble a flux-limited sample at 3.8 mu m of 1500 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts and more than 22000 galaxies with photometric redshifts up to z = 2 and build the rest-frame K-band luminosity function and stellar mass density. We find that the global stellar mass density has remained relatively constant since z similar to 1, but the epoch 1 < z < 2 has seen an increase of more than a factor 10 in the stellar mass density of red galaxies selected based on the bimodal distribution of (NUV-r) colors, while in the same period blue galaxies have seen only a modest factor 2 increase. We interpret this as the fast build-up of the red sequence of galaxies, essentially complete by z similar to 1.

Abstract: Taking advantage of the efficient VIMOS multi-slit spectrograph on the VLT, we are conducting the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS), aimed to trace the evolution of galaxies and large-scale structures over more than 90% of the life of the Universe. The VVDS is made of three magnitude selected surveys: the wide survey at IAB = 22.5, the deep survey at IAB = 24, and the ultra-deep survey at IAB = 24.75. To date, the VVDS has assembled more than 45000 redshifts in the range 0 < z ≤ 5. A number of results have been obtained, including a comprehensive view of the luminosity and stellar mass evolution as a function of galaxy type over 0 < z ≤ 2, a detailed look at the evolution of the clustering of galaxies as a function of type and environment, and a complete census of the actively star-forming galaxy population for 1.5 < z ≤ 5. Deep representative surveys of galaxies at different epochs are needed to make progress in understanding galaxy evolution. Aims. We describe the completed VIMOS VLT Deep Survey and the final data release of 35 016 galaxies and type-I AGN with measured spectro-scopic redshifts covering all epochs up to redshiftz∼6.7, in areas from 0.142 to 8.7 square degrees, and volumes from 0.5×106to 2×107h−3Mpc3. Methods. We selected samples of galaxies based solely on their i-band magnitude reaching iAB=24.75. Spectra were obtained with VIMOS on the ESO-VLT integrating 0.75 h, 4.5 h, and 18 h for the Wide, Deep, and Ultra-Deep nested surveys, respectively. We demonstrate that any “redshift desert” can be crossed successfully using spectra covering 3650 ≤λ≤9350 Å. A total of 1263 galaxies were again observed independently within the VVDS and from the VIPERS and MASSIV surveys. They were used to establish the redshift measurements reliability, to assess completeness in the VVDS sample, and to provide a weighting scheme taking the survey selection function into account. We describe the main properties of the VVDS samples, and the VVDS is compared to other spectroscopic surveys in the literature. Results. In total we have obtained spectroscopic redshifts for 34 594 galaxies, 422 type-I AGN, and 12 430 Galactic stars. The survey enabled identifying galaxies up to very high redshifts with 4669 redshifts in 1≤ z spec ≤2, 561 in 2≤z spec ≤3, and 468 with z spec >3, and specific populations like Lyman-α emitters were identified out to z = 6.62. We show that the VVDS occupies a unique place in the parameter space defined by area, depth, redshift coverage, and number of spectra. Conclusions. The VIMOS VLT Deep Survey provides a comprehensive survey of the distant universe, covering all epochs since z∼6, or more than 12 Gyr of cosmic time, with a uniform selection, which is the largest such sample to date. A wealth of science results derived from the VVDS have shed new light on the evolution of galaxies and AGN and on their distribution in space over this large cosmic time. The VVDS further demonstrates that large deep spectroscopic redshift surveys over all these epochs in the distant Universe are a key tool to observational cosmology.To enhance the legacy value of the survey, a final public release of the complete VVDS spectroscopic redshift sample is available at http://cesam.lam.fr/vvds.

Abstract: We propose to set up a 1-metre class lunar transit telescope (LTT) inside a polar lunar crater. This telescope would produce a large Ultra-Deep sky survey (UV-visible) with excellent image quality. Its outstanding capabilities for wide field imaging would be essential to address several astrophysical topics, from planetary science to extragalactic astronomy, but the main driver of the project would be a key question in cosmology which requires both very large field and high image quality. In particular, a deep LTT survey would be perfect for measuring the weak gravitational lensing effect induced by the low mass density contrasts ( Δϱ ϱ ) of the largest structures in the Universe. This Dark Matter mapping would be a major step toward understanding the origin of gravitational structures and the history of our universe. We discuss some technical aspects and difficulties related to this programme.

Abstract: The discovery of giant gravitational arcs and arclets in rich clusters of galaxies is one of the major events of the last decade in observational cosmology. High resolution imaging in subarcsecond seeing conditions of giant arcs gives information on the cluster potential and the matter distribution within the inner regions of clusters. Ultra-deep photometry of the clusters reveals numerous arclets with an orthoradial orientation from which one can infer the projected mass profile at large distance and the redshift distribution of the faintest distant background galaxies which are unobservable with standard spectroscopic techniques. Thanks to the strong magnification factor, the spectroscopy of giant arcs is possible and we can therefore observe with great detail a few very distant galaxies. Individual redshifts of arcs give the total mass of the lens, whereas the spectroscopy of a large sample of arcs also gives information on the redshift distribution of distant galaxies. It is obvious that cluster lenses play an important role as large natural telescopes for probing the distant universe. Finally, observations of multiple-arc configurations due to different sources may even constrain the cosmological parameters. We are now confident that gravitational lensing will be an essential tool within the next decade for observing very high redshift galaxies and the weak shear generated by the largest structures of the universe. In this review we summarize the present status of gravitational arc(let)s surveys with particular emphasis on the most important issues which have arisen during the last years and on the prospects for the future, regarding the rebirth of the Hubble Space Telescope, the coming of a new generation of Very Large Telescopes, and the development of large CCDs in the optical and the infrared.

Abstract: Introduction Gravitational lensing effects arise from the modification of space-time metric produced by mass concentrations. Following an early prediction of General Relativity, gravitational fields deflect the light path of photons and modify the apparent flux and shape of astronomical sources. By observing gravitationally lensed images, cosmologists can probe dark matter almost ‘directly’. They can in principle examine it without the need to speculate on the distribution of matter inside the gravitational potential responsible for the light deflection, nor on its dynamical state and on its thermodynamical properties. A most attractive application of gravitational lensing concerns the quest for dark matter candidates and for the properties of dark matter particles. Successful examples are the microlensing experiments (see [798] and references therein) carried out over the past decade to detect sub-stellar dark compact objects in the Galaxy. Similar searches for invisible cosmologically distributed compact objects have been carried out using microlensing on quasars [609]. These experiments set limits on compact dark objects (CDO) in the mass range 10 −6 M ⊙ m 6 M ⊙ [1918] and prove they represent a fraction Ω M (CDO) Beside microlensing, other extragalactic gravitational lensing effects on quasars and extended sources (galaxies) can also probe dark matter. Abstract: We compute photometric redshifts based on the template-fitting method in the fourth public release of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey. This unique multi-colour catalogue comprises u*,g',r',i',z' photometry in four deep fields of 1 deg2 each and 35 deg2 distributed over three Wide fields. Our photometric redshifts are calibrated with and compared to 16,983 high-quality spectroscopic redshifts from several surveys. We find a dispersion of 0.028 and an outlier rate of 3.5% in the Deep field at i'AB < 24 and a dispersion of 0.036 and an outlier rate of 2.8% in the Wide field at i'AB < 22.5. Beyond i'AB = 22.5 in the Wide field the number of outliers rises from 5% to 10% at i'AB, 18 pages, 17 figures

Abstract: We investigate the dependence of galaxy clustering on the galaxy intrinsic luminosity at high redshift, using the data from the First Epoch VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS). The size (6530 galaxies) and depth (I_{AB}=0.9 and median absolute magnitude -19.6< M_B < -21.3. Fitting w_p(r_p) with a single power-law model for the real-space correlation function xi(r)=(r/r_0)^{-gamma}, we measure the relationship of the correlation length r_0 and the slope gamma with the sample median luminosity for the first time at such high redshift. Values from our lower-redshift samples (0.1=-19.6) have a correlation length r_0=2.7^{+0.3}_{-0.3} h^{-1} Mpc, compared to r_0=5.0^{+1.5}_{-1.6} h^{-1} Mpc at =-21.3. Correspondingly the slope of the correlation function is observed to steepen significantly from \gamma=1.6^{+0.1}_{-0.1} to \gamma=2.4^{+0.4}_{-0.2}. This is not observed neither by large local surveys nor in our lower-redshift sample and seems to imply a significant change in the way luminous galaxies trace dark-matter halos at z~1 with respect to z~0. At our effective median redshift z~0.9 this corresponds to a strong difference of the relative bias, from b/b* < 0.7 for galaxies with L < L*, to b/b*~1.4 for galaxies with L > L*., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract: The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) was initiated with an extensive allocation (590 orbits in Cycles 12-13) using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for high resolution imaging. Here we review the characteristics of the HST imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and parallel observations with NICMOS and WFPC2. A square field (1.8$\sq$\deg) has been imaged with single-orbit ACS I-F814W exposures with 50% completeness for sources 0.5\arcsec in diameter at I$_{AB} $ = 26.0 mag. The ACS imaging is a key part of the COSMOS survey, providing very high sensitivity and high resolution (0.09\arcsec FWHM, 0.05\arcsec pixels) imaging and detecting 1.2 million objects to a limiting magnitude of 26.5 (AB). These images yield resolved morphologies for several hundred thousand galaxies. The aim of this work is to constrain the evolution of the fraction of Lya emitters among UV selected star forming galaxies at 2 25A to increase from 5% at z=2 to 30% at z=6, with the increase being relatively stronger beyond z=4. Abstract: We are presenting in this paper a detailed account of the methods used to compute the three-dimensional two-point galaxy correlation function in the VIMOS-VLT deep survey (VVDS). We investigate how instrumental selection effects and observational biases affect the measurements and identify the methods to correct them. We quantify the accuracy of our correction method using an ensemble of fifty mock galaxy surveys generated with the GalICS semi-analytic model of galaxy formation which incorporate the same selection biases and tiling strategy as the real data does. We demonstrate that we are able to recover the real-space two-point correlation function xi(s) to an accuracy better than 10% on scales larger than 1 h^{-1} Mpc, and of about 30% on scales below 1 h^{-1} Mpc, with the sampling strategy used for the first epoch VVDS data. The projected correlation function w_p(r_p) is recovered with an accuracy better than 10% on all scales 0.1, 16 pages, accepted 10-Mar-05 in A&A

Abstract: We have used the Vimos VLT Deep Survey in combination with other spectroscopic, photometric and X-ray surveys from literature to detect several galaxy structures in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). Both a friend-of-friend based algorithm applied to the spectroscopic redshift catalog and an adaptative kernel galaxy density and colour maps correlated with photometric redshift estimates have been used. We mainly detect a chain-like structure at z=0.66 and two massive groups at z=0.735 and 1.098 showing signs of ongoing collapse. We also detect two galaxy walls at z=0.66 and at z=0.735 (extremely compact in redshift space). The first one contains the chain-like structure and the last one contains in its center one of the two massive groups. Finally, other galaxy structures that are probably loose low mass groups are detected. We compare the group galaxy population with simulations in order to assess the richness of these structures and we study their galaxy morphological contents. The higher redshift structures appear to probably have lower velocity dispersion than the nearby ones. Abstract: In this paper we present the optical and near-infrared identifications of the 1054 radio sources detected in the 20 cm deep radio survey down to a 5sigma flux limit of ~80 muJy obtained with the VLA in the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey VVDS-02h deep field. Using U,B,V,R,I and K data, with limiting magnitudes of UAB~25.4, BAB~26.5, VAB~26.2, RAB~25.9 IAB~25.0, JAB~24.2, KAB~23.9 (50% completeness) we identified 718 radio sources (~74% of the whole sample). The photometric redshift analysis shows that, in each magnitude bin, the radio sample has a higher median photometric redshift than the whole optical sample, while the median (V-I)AB color of the radio sources is redder than the median color of the whole optical sample. These results suggest that radio detection is preferentially selecting galaxies with higher intrinsic optical luminosity. From the analysis of the optical properties of the radio sources as function of the radio flux, we found that while about 35% of the radio sources are optically unidentified in the higher radio flux bin (S> 1.0 mJy), the percentage of unidentified sources decreases to about 25% in the faintest bins (S< 0.5 mJy). The median IAB magnitude for the total sample of radio sources, i.e. including also the unidentified ones, is brighter in the faintest radio bins than in the bin with higher radio flux. This suggests that most of the faintest radio sources are likely to be associated to relatively lower radio luminosity objects at relatively modest redshift, rather than radio-powerful, AGN type objects at high redshift. Using a classification in early-type and late-type galaxies based on the (B-I)AB color and the photometric redshift, we found that the majority of the radio sources below ~0.15 mJy are indeed late-type star forming galaxies. Finally, the radio sources without optical counterpart in our deep imaging have a median radio flux of 0.15 mJy, equal to that of identified sources. Given the very faint optical limits, these unidentified radio sources probably contain a significant fraction of obscured and/or high redshift galaxies.

Put into the perspective of this conference, the most illustrative new results concern clusters of galaxies and cosmic shear. In the following I focus on these two topics and discuss the present status of cosmological applications of weak lensing.

Abstract: The observation of distant clusters of galaxies is the best way to understand the evolution of galaxies in clusters. Since about 5 years, the photometric and spectroscopic studies of these systems have largely confirmed that the blue galaxy excess first mentionned by Butcher and Oemler [1] is common in distant rich clusters of galaxies. However, the origin of this effect is always unclear. Moreover, the first spectroscopic observations of Dressier and 6unn [2,3] have shown that: (1) this effect present a large discrepancy from cluster to cluster either quantitatively or in their spectral content (AGN or normal spirals). (2) In addition to the blue galaxies, distant clusters have a large extend of spectral types as the Post-Star-Burst galaxies (E+A) or SO with UV-excess [4]. The understanding of the evolution of galaxies in clusters remains a challenge: are these blue galaxies result from galaxy/gas interactions or galaxy/galaxy interactions due to close encounters ? Are they young normal galaxies falling inward the cluster center or old cluster members which have undergone star-burst formation? Although, spectral indications inform us on possible scenarios, not enough data are presently available to firmly conclude on the evolutionary processes responsible of this spectral content in clusters of galaxies. A larger sample of clusters with very good data is still needed.

Abstract: We present the first Public Data Release (PDR-1) of the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Survey (VIPERS). It comprises 57 204 spectroscopic measurements together with all additional information necessary for optimal scientific exploitation of the data, in particular the associated photometric measurements and quantification of the photometric and survey completeness. VIPERS is an ESO Large Programme designed to build a spectroscopic sample of ' 100 000 galaxies with iAB < 22.5 and 0.5 < z < 1.5 with high sampling rate (~45%). The survey spectroscopic targets are selected from the CFHTLS-Wide five-band catalogues in the W1 and W4 fields. The final survey will cover a total area of nearly 24 deg2, for a total comoving volume between z = 0.5 and 1.2 of ~4x10^7 h^(-3)Mpc^3 and a median galaxy redshift of z~0.8. The release presented in this paper includes data from virtually the entire W4 field and nearly half of the W1 area, thus representing 64% of the final dataset. Abstract: We measure the evolution of the galaxy stellar mass function from z=1.3 to z=0.5 using the first 53,608 redshifts of the ongoing VIMOS Public Extragalactic Survey (VIPERS). We estimate the galaxy stellar mass function at several epochs discussing in detail the amount of cosmic variance affecting our estimate. We find that Poisson noise and cosmic variance of the galaxy mass function in the VIPERS survey are comparable with the statistical uncertainties of large surveys in the local universe. VIPERS data allow us to determine with unprecedented accuracy the high-mass tail of the galaxy stellar mass function, which includes a significant number of galaxies that are usually too rare to detect with any of the past spectroscopic surveys. At the epochs sampled by VIPERS, massive galaxies had already assembled most of their stellar mass. We apply a photometric classification in the (U-V) rest-frame colour to compute the mass function of blue and red galaxies, finding evidence for the evolution of their contribution to the total number density budget: the transition mass above which red galaxies dominate is found to be about 10^10.4 M_sun at z=0.55 and evolves proportionally to (1+z)^3. We are able to trace separately the evolution of the number density of blue and red galaxies with masses above 10^11.4 M_sun, in a mass range barely studied in previous work. We find that for such large masses, red galaxies show a milder evolution with redshift, when compared to objects at lower masses. At the same time, we detect a population of similarly massive blue galaxies, which are no longer detectable below z=0.7. These results show the improved statistical power of VIPERS data, and give initial promising indications of mass-dependent quenching of galaxies at z~1. Abstract: We present in this paper the general real- and redshift-space clustering properties of galaxies as measured in the first data release of the VIPERS survey. VIPERS is a large redshift survey designed to probe the distant Universe and its large-scale structure at 0.5 < z < 1.2. We describe in this analysis the global properties of the sample and discuss the survey completeness and associated corrections. This sample allows us to measure the galaxy clustering with an unprecedented accuracy at these redshifts. From the redshift-space distortions observed in the galaxy clustering pattern we provide a first measurement of the growth rate of structure at z = 0.8: f��_8 = 0.47 +/- 0.08. This is completely consistent with the predictions of standard cosmological models based on Einstein gravity, although this measurement alone does not discriminate between different gravity models., 19 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: The aim of this work is to develop a comprehensive method for classifying sources in large sky surveys and we apply the techniques to the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS). Using the optical (u*, g', r', i') and NIR data (z', Ks), we develop a classifier, based on broad-band photometry, for identifying stars, AGNs and galaxies improving the purity of the VIPERS sample. Support Vector Machine (SVM) supervised learning algorithms allow the automatic classification of objects into two or more classes based on a multidimensional parameter space. In this work, we tailored the SVM for classifying stars, AGNs and galaxies, and applied this classification to the VIPERS data. We train the SVM using spectroscopically confirmed sources from the VIPERS and VVDS surveys. We tested two SVM classifiers and concluded that including NIR data can significantly improve the efficiency of the classifier. The self-check of the best optical + NIR classifier has shown a 97% accuracy in the classification of galaxies, 97 for stars, and 95 for AGNs in the 5-dimensional colour space. In the test on VIPERS sources with 99% redshift confidence, the classifier gives an accuracy equal to 94% for galaxies, 93% for stars, and 82% for AGNs. The method was applied to sources with low quality spectra to verify their classification, and thus increasing the security of measurements for almost 4 900 objects. We conclude that the SVM algorithm trained on a carefully selected sample of galaxies, AGNs, and stars outperforms simple colour-colour selection methods, and can be regarded as a very efficient classification method particularly suitable for modern large surveys., 14 pages, 11 figures, 9 tables, published in A&A

Abstract: We present the general real- and redshift-space clustering properties of galaxies as measured in the first data release of the VIPERS survey. VIPERS is a large redshift survey designed to probe in detail the distant Universe and its large-scale structure at 0.5 < z < 1.2. We describe in this analysis the global properties of the sample and discuss the survey completeness and associated corrections. This sample allows us to measure the galaxy clustering with an unprecedented accuracy at these redshifts. From the redshift-space distortions observed in the galaxy clustering pattern we provide a first measurement of the growth rate of structure at z = 0.8: fσ8 = 0.47 ± 0.08. This is completely consistent with the predictions of standard cosmological models based on Einstein gravity, although this measurement alone does not discriminate between different gravity models. Based on observations collected at the European Southern Observatory, Cerro Paranal, Chile, using the Very Large Telescope under programmes 182.A-0886 and partly 070.A-9007. Abstract: We develop a Principal Component Analysis aimed at classifying a sub-set of 27,350 spectra of galaxies in the range 0.4 < z < 1.0 collected by the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS). We apply an iterative algorithm to simultaneously repair parts of spectra affected by noise and/or sky residuals, and reconstruct gaps due to rest-frame transformation, and obtain a set of orthogonal spectral templates that span the diversity of galaxy types. By taking the three most significant components, we find that we can describe the whole sample without contamination from noise. We produce a catalogue of eigen-coefficients and template spectra that will be part of future VIPERS data releases. Our templates effectively condense the spectral information into two coefficients that can be related to the age and star formation rate of the galaxies. Abstract: Aims. The aim of this work is to study the contribution of the Ly-a emitters (LAE) to the star formation rate density (SFRD) of the Universe in the interval 21.5x10^18 erg/s/cm^2 are 33 galaxies/arcmin^2 and 4x10^-2 Mpc^-3, respectively. We find that the the observed luminosity function of LAE does not evolve from z=2 to z=6. This implies that, after correction for the redshift-dependent IGM absorption, the intrinsic LF must have evolved significantly over 3 Gyr. The SFRD from LAE contributes to about 20% of the SFRD at z =2-3, while the LAE appear to be the dominant source of star formation producing ionizing photons in the early universe z>5-6, becoming equivalent to that of Lyman Break galaxies., Comment: 17 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication to A&A

Abstract: We measure the real-space galaxy power spectrum on large scales at redshifts 0.5 to 1.2 using optical colour-selected samples from the CFHT Legacy Survey. With the redshift distributions measured with a preliminary ~14000 spectroscopic redshifts from the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS), we deproject the angular distribution and directly estimate the three-dimensional power spectrum. We use a maximum likelihood estimator that is optimal for a Gaussian random field giving well-defined window functions and error estimates. This measurement presents an initial look at the large-scale structure field probed by the VIPERS survey. We measure the galaxy bias of the VIPERS-like sample to be b_g=1.38 +- 0.05 (sigma_8=0.8) on scales k, Comment: Minor changes to match journal version

Abstract: Measurements of the growth rate of structure f at different redshifts can discriminate the origin of cosmic acceleration. Coupled to estimates of the expansion rate H(z) as provided by Type-la supernovae or Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations, accurate measurements of f(z) are able to distinguish "dark energy" models from theories with modified gravity, as, e.g., braneworld models. These two classes are degenerate when considering the expansion history alone. We have recently shown (Nature, 451 (2008) 541) that redshift-space distortions in the clustering pattern of galaxies measured from large redshift surveys represent an extremely promising technique to trace f (z) back in time. We have measured the distortion parameter beta at z similar to 0.8 using the currently largest field of the VVDS-Wide survey, that includes more than 10000 galaxy redshifts to I(AB) = 22.5 over 4 deg(2). We obtain 0 - 0.70 +/- 0.26, corresponding to a growth rate f = 0.91 +/- 0.36, consistent with the simplest cosmological-constant scenario. Error bars are still large compared with the difference among models. However, next-generation deep surveys with N > 100000 redshifts over similar to 100deg(2) or larger, will be able to use this test as an accurate probe of the origin of cosmic acceleration.
