Abstract

Abstract This article describes the setup and performance of the near and far detectors in the Double Chooz experiment. The electron antineutrinos of the Chooz nuclear power plant were measured in two identically designed detectors with different average baselines of about 400 m and 1050 m from the two reactor cores. Over many years of data taking the neutrino signals were extracted from interactions in the detectors with the goal of measuring a fundamental parameter in the context of neutrino oscillation, the mixing angle $$\theta _{13}$$ θ 13 . The central part of the Double Chooz detectors was a main detector comprising four cylindrical volumes filled with organic liquids. From the inside towards the outside there were volumes containing gadolinium-loaded scintillator, gadolinium-free scintillator, a buffer oil and, optically separated, another liquid scintillator acting as veto system. Above this main detector an additional outer veto system using plastic scintillator strips was installed. The technologies developed in Double Chooz were inspiration for several other antineutrino detectors in the field. The detector design allowed implementation of efficient background rejection techniques including use of pulse shape information provided by the data acquisition system. The Double Chooz detectors featured remarkable stability, in particular for the detected photons, as well as high radiopurity of the detector components.

2. Comparison of methods of analgesia in patients after pancreatic surgery: a cohort retrospective study

Abstract

AIM: To compare the effectiveness of postoperative analgesia by methods of epidural blockade (EB) and rectus sheath block (RSB) in the early postoperative period in patients who underwent pancreatic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of inpatient case histories of patients after pancreatic surgery at JSC Ilyinsky Hospital for the period from 2019 to 2021 (n=92) was conducted. For the study, 78 cases were selected, which were divided into two groups: the first group (n=46) received EB with a local anesthetic in the postoperative period, and the second group (n=32) underwent RSB followed by the introduction of a local anesthetic solution. RESULTS:The level of pain on the visual analog scale was statistically significantly higher in the first group on day 1(1.07 [0.501.80] and 0.48 [0.081.13], respectively, p=0.013) and day 2 (0.82 [0.251.33] and 0.33 [0.060.75], respectively, p=0.021), and no differences were found on day 3 (p=0.060). The frequency of additional use of opioid analgesia did not differ between the study groups (day 1, p=0.233; day 2, p=0.570; and day 3, p=0.092 The use of norepinephrine infusion in the early postoperative period (p=0.842), daily and cumulative water balance (day 0, p=0.851; day 1, p=0.883; and day 2, p=0.319; day 3, p=0.718; and cumulative balance, p=0.707), and verticalization time (p=0.800) also showed no significant difference.). Orthostatic reactions during early mobilization were noted significantly more often in the EB group than in the RSB group (n=10, 21.7%; n=1, 3.2%, respectively; OR 8.333, 95% CI 1.00866.667, p=0.042). The appearance of the first stool was more common in the EB group (3 [24] days vs. 4 [35] days in the RSB group, p=0.027). No statistically significant difference was found between the groups in the development of infectious complications (p=1.000), gastrostasis (p=0.144), in-hospital mortality rate (p=0.460), ICU days (p=0.305), and lengths of stay (p=0.776). CONCLUSION: The data obtained in the study show the comparability of the use of analgesia methods, such as EB and RSB in patients who underwent pancreatic surgery.

Abstract

Fast-quenched alloys with amorphous and microcrystalline structures were obtained by the cooling drum spinning method during plasma-arc melting process. Thermal load measurements carried out during the melting process and the spinning of the molten material that followed, helped us to modify the existing plasma-arc equipment. Metallographic analyses of the amorphous alloys showed the influence of some quenching process parameters on the creation of their microstructure and revealed the nature of the formation of the crystal structures.

Abstract

The oscillation results published by the Double Chooz Collaboration in 2011 and 2012 rely on background models substantiated by reactor-on data. In this analysis, we present a background-model-independent measurement of the mixing angle θ13 by including 7.53 days of reactor-off data. A global fit of the observed antineutrino rates for different reactor power conditions is performed, yielding a measurement of both θ13 and the total background rate. The results on the mixing angle are improved significantly by including the reactor-off data in the fit, as it provides a direct measurement of the total background rate. This reactor rate modulation analysis considers antineutrino candidates with neutron captures on both Gd and H, whose combination yields sin2(2θ13)=0.102±0.028(stat.)±0.033(syst.). The results presented in this study are fully consistent with the ones already published by Double Chooz, achieving a competitive precision. They provide, for the first time, a determination of θ13 that does not depend on a background model.

Abstract

We describe a muon track reconstruction algorithm for the reactor anti-neutrino experiment Double Chooz. The Double Chooz detector consists of two optically isolated volumes of liquid scintillator viewed by PMTs, and an Outer Veto above these made of crossed scintillator strips. Muons are reconstructed by their Outer Veto hit positions along with timing information from the other two detector volumes. All muons are fit under the hypothesis that they are through-going and ultrarelativistic. If the energy depositions suggest that the muon may have stopped, the reconstruction fits also for this hypothesis and chooses between the two via the relative goodness-of-fit. In the ideal case of a through-going muon intersecting the center of the detector, the resolution is ∼40 mm in each transverse dimension. Abstract

The Double Chooz experiment measures the neutrino mixing angle θ13 by detecting reactor ν¯e via inverse beta decay. The positron-neutron space and time coincidence allows for a sizable background rejection, nonetheless liquid scintillator detectors would profit from a positron/electron discrimination, if feasible in large detector, to suppress the remaining background. Standard particle identification, based on particle dependent time profile of photon emission in liquid scintillator, can not be used given the identical mass of the two particles. However, the positron annihilation is sometimes delayed by the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) metastable state formation, which induces a pulse shape distortion that could be used for positron identification. In this paper we report on the first observation of positronium formation in a large liquid scintillator detector based on pulse shape analysis of single events. The o-Ps formation fraction and its lifetime were measured, finding the values of 44% ± 12% (sys.) ± 5% (stat.) and 3.68ns ± 0.17ns (sys.) ± 0.15ns (stat.) respectively, in agreement with the results obtained with a dedicated positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy setup., National Science Foundation (U.S.), United States. Abstract

The Double Chooz experiment presents improved measurements of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ using the data collected in 467.90 live days from a detector positioned at an average distance of 1050 m from two reactor cores at the Chooz nuclear power plant. Several novel techniques have been developed to achieve significant reductions of the backgrounds and systematic uncertainties with respect to previous publications, whereas the efficiency of the $\bar\nu_{e}$ signal has increased. The value of $\theta_{13}$ is measured to be $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13} = 0.090 ^{+0.032}_{-0.029}$ from a fit to the observed energy spectrum. Deviations from the reactor $\bar\nu_{e}$ prediction observed above a prompt signal energy of 4 MeV and possible explanations are also reported. A consistent value of $\theta_{13}$ is obtained from a fit to the observed rate as a function of the reactor power independently of the spectrum shape and background estimation, demonstrating the robustness of the $\theta_{13}$ measurement despite the observed distortion., Comment: 44 pages, 25 figures. Abstract

In this paper, we obtain invariants of counterinteraction of femtosecond light pulses in a nonlinear medium. In the process of interaction, the harmonic amplitude at a frequency determined by the dispersion of nonlinear response of the medium oscillates along the propagation path with spatial frequency that is also determined by nonlinearity dispersion. Abstract

In our report a new type of optical bistability is proposed. It is based on a violation of Snell's law of inclined laser beam that is reflected from a mirror having a hole at its axis. We demonstrate switching of light power passed through the hole. Time of switching is less than 10-13 c. In our opinion, this scheme has very good characteristics for creation of its base the optical switching element with very short time of switching and low energy of switching since we use refractive properties of medium.© (1999) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Abstract

Nonlinear interactions of counter propagating waves take place in various nonlinear optical processes attracting attentions of investigators for many years. This is due to problems having a practical importance (for example, wave front conjugation). However, a number of factors that influence on processes quality were exposed by investigators. There is an instability appearance in the system of counter propagating waves among them. An analytical solution for the scheme of two wave have been obtained by now only for strict counter interaction. In the present report some instabilities development is demonstrated by the examples obtained from the mathematical simulation experiments. As an explanation of the some reasons of instability, the question of convective instability (along the interaction region) in the system of counter propagating noncollinear plane waves with unequal amplitudes is studied.© (1999) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
