Transcription factors are involved in lipid metabolism, and in present study, the transcription factor WRINKLED 1 (GhWRI1) was cloned from Gossypium hirsutum L. cv. Coker 201 by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR and rapid amplification of cDNA ends. The Pro35S:WRI1 vector was constructed and transformed into upland cotton cv. Sumian 20 using the pollen tube pathway method. After PCR and Southern blot verification of the positive transgenic plants, T2 transgenic lines derived from T1 individuals with the insertion gene in a single copy were chosen for further dissection. Semi-quantitative and quantitative RT-PCR analyses indicated that GhWRI1 gene expression increased in transgenic plants compared with that in the wild-type. Seed lipid content increased at most transgenic plants, and at the same time, protein content decreased. Compared to the control, major agronomical traits were not affected by overexpression of GhWRI1 in transgenic plants.

Abstract The focal plane camera is the core component of the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov/fluorescence Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Because of the capability of working under moonlight without aging, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been proven to be not only an alternative but also an improvement to conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in this application. Eighteen SiPM-based cameras with square light funnels have been built for WFCTA. The telescopes have collected more than 100 million cosmic ray events and preliminary results indicate that these cameras are capable of working under moonlight. The characteristics of the light funnels and SiPMs pose challenges (e.g. dynamic range, dark count rate, assembly techniques). In this paper, we present the design features, manufacturing techniques and performances of these cameras. Finally, the test facilities, the test methods and results of SiPMs in the cameras are reported here.

It is a difficult scientific problem of applied fluid mechanics that the flame is too long and does not match the furnace chamber in a small restricted heating space. This paper aims to investigate the effect of the air quantity distribution ratio on the flame height of a flue gas self-circulation burner. In order to obtain a better combustion emission effect and a shorter flame height, a burner head structure with a small flue gas self-circulation was designed. Numerical simulation was employed to investigate the effect of the different distributions of central air, swirling air and secondary air on flame height. The periodic boundary condition model was adopted and the numerical model was compared and validated by experiment. Correlation analysis was used to determine the influence of the air inlet ratio of each part on the flame height and recirculating flue gas ratio (RFGR). The results show that the influence of different air quantity distributions on flame length is very significant. A reasonable central air ratio is a necessary condition for the good combustion of this flue gas self-circulation burner. Secondary air can effectively increase the RFGR, and flame height was significantly shorter with the increase of RFGR, but when it increased to more than 12%, the flame length was basically no longer shortened. On the premise of stable combustion, when the ratio of central air, swirling air and secondary air are respectively 25%, 35% and 40%, the shortest flame length is achieved. This work reveals an influence mechanism of the flame height of a small burner with a flue gas circulation structure. These results can provide theoretical support and an engineering design basis for the short flame problem in a small restricted space.

In this work, we adopt the integration of the L-system fractal tree generation, 3D printed wind tunnel modeling, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation approach to model the wind effect on a single tree. We compare the agreement between CFD simulations and wind tunnel measurements of rigid branched structures resembling trees. First, fractal tree mesh models based on species growth and branching patterns are developed to represent tree species for wind–tree modeling. Subsequently, a scaled-down fractal tree is generated with 3D-printing and subjected to tunnel testing with load cell and particle image velocimetry measurement data under the wind speed of 10 m/s and 15 m/s. Finally, CFD based on Reynolds-Average Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulation with a full closure model and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) using appropriate momentum sink and turbulence source terms for the volumetric tree is carried out. We use both the volume-average porous media and the volume-splitting discretized zones (split number 10 × 10 × 10) to reproduce the momentum sink effect in the numerical simulation. Three tree species, namely, Peltophorum pterocarpum (yellow flame), Khaya senegalensis (African mahogany), and Hopea odorata (ironwood), are tested, and a reasonable agreement of drag force prediction and velocity profiles is obtained when comparing the CFD simulation results with wind tunnel data. The RANS modeled drag force results exhibit 20% of over-prediction, while the normalized velocity profiles display a good match of velocity decay at the tree leeward sides. On the other hand, LES produces much better results with only 3% discrepancy with the experimental results. A comparison of experimental results among the tree species is also carried out. Due to the actual random wind direction, tree slenderness representation, and structural flexibility issues, the current methodology still has the limitation for validation with urban on-site measurement. Nonetheless, this integrated approach is the first step in establishing modeling tool applicability to examine the effect of the forest structure and composition on wind loads.

Tectonic controls on near-surface CH4 and CO2 concentrations were investigated by measuring CH4 and CO2 concentrations at the surface and a height of 1.5 m, in the different tectonic units that comprise the northwestern margin of Ordos Block, China, which has a complex tectonic structure and a history of strong earthquakes. CH4 and CO2 concentrations varied from 1905 to 2472 ppb and 397.5 to 458.5 ppm, respectively. Surface CH4 and CO2 concentrations were generally higher than those measured at 1.5 m, but showed similar trends, indicating that the measured CH4 and CO2 predominantly originated from underground gases. The CH4 and CO2 concentrations increased with an increasing strike-slip rate across the faults, and concentrations in the blocks with high internal deformation were much higher than those measured in the stable blocks. Regions of extensional deformation had higher gas concentrations than regions that had experienced compressional deformation. The spatial distribution of CH4 and CO2 at the study site had similar trends to faults associated with the Yinchuan Graben. The results of this study indicated that gas source, gas migration pathway, and tectonic stress were the main factors that influenced gas emission. The key factor is tectonic stress, which controlled the formation of tectonic structures, changed the pathway of degassing, and acted as the driving force for gas migration. The results of this study clarify the mechanism of CH4 and CO2 degassing in faulted regions and suggest that CH4 and CO2 concentrations may be useful precursors in the monitoring of seismic activity. The results may also help inform future assessments of the contribution of geological sources to greenhouse gas emissions.

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive technique and widely used in medical and dental treatment for reaching and affecting deep seated tissues within the body, such as the removal of fat tissues under the skin, destruction of malignant tumour cells or target volume for the purpose of tissue debulking. This study aims to explore the damage characteristics of elastic material (regarded as soft tissue) by HIFU separated by a thin membrane all immersed in a water medium, in which the latter is used to mimic the human skin in medical treatments. Measurements of acoustic pressure along the vertical central line of HIFU transducer with and without this membrane were conducted and effects of membrane on the focal region were investigated. Results showed that the existence of the membrane serves primarily to reflect partial energy of incident ultrasound wave, and has no effect on phases of wave propagating in water. Next, Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was selected as the elastic material for the experiments. The process of PDMS damage through the membrane by HIFU were recorded and the distribution of temperature around and within the ‘destroyed’ PDMS block was captured by an infrared camera. The very high temperature measured within the PDMS leading to the formations of cavity and crack within the PDMS block, can be attributed to the accumulation of the energy from the ultrasound source. Finally, the effects of PDMS with different elasticity on their damage characteristics are discussed.

The ion composition experiment on Cluster measures 3-D distributions in one spin of the spacecraft (4 s). These distributions often measure field-aligned ion beams (H+, He+ and O+) accelerated out of the ionosphere. The standard model of these beams relies on a quasi-static U-shaped potential model. The beams contain important information about the structure and distribution of the U-shaped potential structures. For example, a simple beam with a narrow velocity range tells us that the particles are accelerated going through a quasi-static U-shaped potential structure localized in space. A more complex beam with a large range of velocities varying smoothly (a few tens of kilometers per second to > 100 km s−1) tells us that the potential structure is extended and distributed along the magnetic field. The Cluster experiment has now revealed new features about the beams. Some beams are broken into many individual structures each with their own velocity. The U-shaped potential model would interpret the new features in terms of particles accelerated by narrow isolated potential structures maintained over an extended region of the magnetic field. Another interpretation is that these features arise as Cluster traverses toward the center of a small-scale U-shaped potential region detecting particles accelerated on different equipotential contours. The estimate of the distance of the adjacent contours is ~ 590–610 m at a Cluster height of ~ 3.5 RE. The observed dimensions map to ~ 295–305 m in the ionosphere, suggesting Cluster has measured the potential structure of an auroral arc.

Numerous observations have shown that ions flow out of the ionosphere during substorms with more fluxes leaving as the substorm intensity increases (Wilson et al., 2004). In this article we show observations of low-energy (few tens of electron volts) ionospheric ions flowing out periods without substorms, determined using the Wideband Imaging Camera (WIC) and Auroral Electrojet (AE) indices. We use Cluster ion composition data and show the outflowing ions are field-aligned H+, He+ and O+ beams accelerated to energies of ~40–80 eV, after correcting for spacecraft potential. The estimated fluxes of the low-energy O+ ions measured at ~20 000 km altitude are >103–105 cm−2 s. Assuming the auroral oval is the source of the escaping ions, the measured fluxes correspond to a flow rate of ~1019–1021 ions s−1 leaving the ionosphere. However, periods without substorms can persist for hours suggesting the low-energy ions flowing out during these times could be a major source of the heavy ion population in the plasma sheet and lobe.

Emission inventories of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) contain large uncertainties both in their spatial and temporal distributions for different source types. An inverse model was used to evaluate EC and OC emissions based on 1 year of hourly measurements from the St. Louis–Midwest supersite. The input to the model consisted of continuous measurements of EC and OC obtained for 2002 using two semicontinuous analyzers. High resolution meteorological simulations were performed for the entire time period using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF). These were used to simulate hourly back trajectories at the measurement site using a Lagrangian model (FLEXPART-WRF). In combination, an Eulerian model (CAMx: The Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions ) was used to simulate the impacts at the measurement site using known emissions inventories for point and area sources from the Lake Michigan Directors Consortium (LADCO) as well as for open burning from the Fire Inventory from NCAR (FINN). By considering only passive transport of pollutants, the Bayesian inversion simplifies to a single least squares inversion. The inverse model combines forward Eulerian simulations with backward Lagrangian simulations to yield estimates of emissions from sources in current inventories as well as from emissions that might be missing in the inventories. The CAMx impacts were disaggregated into separate time chunks in order to determine improved diurnal, weekday and monthly temporal patterns of emissions. Because EC is a primary species, the inverse model estimates can be interpreted directly as emissions. In contrast, OC is both a primary and a secondary species. As the inverse model does not differentiate between direct emissions and formation in the plume of those direct emissions, the estimates need to be interpreted as contributions to measured concentrations. Emissions of EC and OC in the St. Louis region from on-road, non-road, marine/aircraft/railroad (MAR), "other" and point sources were revised slightly downwards on average. In particular, both MAR and point sources had a more pronounced diurnal variation than in the inventory. The winter peak in "other" emissions was not corroborated by the inverse model. On-road emissions have a larger difference between weekday and weekends in the inverse estimates than in the inventory, and appear to be poorly simulated or characterized in the winter months. The model suggests that open burning emissions are significantly underestimated in the inventory. Finally, contributions of unknown sources seems to be from areas to the south of St. Louis and from afternoon and nighttime emissions.

Formation and growth of ultrafine particles is crudely represented in chemistry-climate models, contributing to uncertainties in aerosol composition, size distribution, and aerosol effects on cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations. Measurements of ultrafine particles, their precursor gases, and meteorological parameters were performed in a ponderosa pine forest in the Colorado Front Range in July–August 2011, and were analyzed to study processes leading to small particle burst events (PBEs) which were characterized by an increase in the number concentrations of ultrafine 4–30 nm diameter size particles. These measurements suggest that PBEs were associated with the arrival at the site of anthropogenic pollution plumes midday to early afternoon. During PBEs, number concentrations of 4–30 nm diameter particles typically exceeded 104 cm−3, and these elevated concentrations coincided with increased SO2 and monoterpene concentrations, and led to a factor-of-2 increase in CCN concentrations at 0.5% supersaturation. The PBEs were simulated using the regional WRF-Chem model, which was extended to account for ultrafine particle sizes starting at 1 nm in diameter, to include an empirical activation nucleation scheme in the planetary boundary layer, and to explicitly simulate the subsequent growth of Aitken particles (10–100 nm) by condensation of organic and inorganic vapors. The updated model reasonably captured measured aerosol number concentrations and size distribution during PBEs, as well as ground-level CCN concentrations. Model results suggest that sulfuric acid originating from anthropogenic SO2 triggered PBEs, and that the condensation of monoterpene oxidation products onto freshly nucleated particles contributes to their growth. The simulated growth rate of ~ 3.4 nm h−1 for 4–40 nm diameter particles was comparable to the measured average value of 2.3 nm h−1. Results also suggest that the presence of PBEs tends to modify the composition of sub-20 nm diameter particles, leading to a higher mass fraction of sulfate aerosols. Sensitivity simulations suggest that the representation of nucleation processes in the model largely influences the predicted number concentrations and thus CCN concentrations. We estimate that nucleation contributes 67% of surface CCN at 0.5% supersaturation in this pine forest environment.

The Bio-hydro-atmosphere interactions of Energy, Aerosols, Carbon, H2O, Organics & Nitrogen (BEACHON) project seeks to understand the feedbacks and inter-relationships between hydrology, biogenic emissions, carbon assimilation, aerosol properties, clouds and associated feedbacks within water-limited ecosystems. The Manitou Experimental Forest Observatory (MEFO) was established in 2008 by the National Center for Atmospheric Research to address many of the BEACHON research objectives, and it now provides a fixed field site with significant infrastructure. MEFO is a mountainous, semi-arid ponderosa pine-dominated forest site that is normally dominated by clean continental air but is periodically influenced by anthropogenic sources from Colorado Front Range cities. This article summarizes the past and ongoing research activities at the site, and highlights some of the significant findings that have resulted from these measurements. These activities include - soil property measurements; - hydrological studies; - measurements of high-frequency turbulence parameters; - eddy covariance flux measurements of water, energy, aerosols and carbon dioxide through the canopy; - determination of biogenic and anthropogenic volatile organic compound emissions and their influence on regional atmospheric chemistry; - aerosol number and mass distributions; - chemical speciation of aerosol particles; - characterization of ice and cloud condensation nuclei; - trace gas measurements; and - model simulations using coupled chemistry and meteorology. In addition to various long-term continuous measurements, three focused measurement campaigns with state-of-the-art instrumentation have taken place since the site was established, and two of these studies are the subjects of this special issue: BEACHON-ROCS (Rocky Mountain Organic Carbon Study, 2010) and BEACHON-RoMBAS (Rocky Mountain Biogenic Aerosol Study, 2011).

Lithologic and isotopic changes of one stalagmite (224 mm in length) from Heilong Cave, Central China, are investigated here in order to explore multiple proxies of monsoon climate. High uranium concentrations (6–10 ppm) ensure Th-230 dates precisely and resultant chronology ranges from ~790 to 1780 AD across the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) to Little Ice Age (LIA). Annually resolved oxygen and carbon isotopic data, gray level and elemental Sr are highly related to macroscopic lithologic changes. A lamination sequence is composed of alternations of white-porous and dark-compact calcite clearly discerned on the polished surface. The dark-compact laminae have low values of gray level, high Sr and δ13C values, indicating periods of low growth rate under dry climate conditions, and vice versa for the white-porous laminae. This suggests that changes in hydrology, matter input of drip water and crystallization process were controlled by cave environments and climates. The alternation of dry and wet periods with a significant periodicity of ~90 yr, as indicated by spectral analyses of the multiple proxies, is further supported by a reconstructed precipitation index from historical documents and instrumental data extending back to 1470 AD. A strong coherence between monsoon proxy of calcite δ18O and the other proxies was observed during the LIA but not during the MWP. This is likely due to changes in atmospheric circulation pattern at the boundary of MWP/LIA. When the Intertropical Convergence Zone shifted southward during the LIA, summer monsoon precipitation at the cave site was probably dominated by the Mei-Yu, resulting in water vapor mainly originated from adjacent oceanic sources.

Leaf area index (LAI) is one of the key structural variables in terrestrial vegetation ecosystems. Remote sensing offers an opportunity to accurately derive LAI at regional scales. The anisotropy of canopy reflectance, variations in background characteristics, and variability in atmospheric conditions constitute three factors that can strongly constrain the accuracy of retrieved LAI. Based on a hybrid canopy reflectance model, a new hyperspectral directional second derivative method (DSD) is proposed in this paper. This method can estimate LAI accurately through analyzing the canopy anisotropy. The effect of the background can also be effectively removed. With the aid of a widely-accepted atmospheric model, the influence of atmospheric conditions can be minimized as well. Thus the inversion precision and the dynamic range can be markedly improved, which has been proved by numerical simulations. As the derivative method is very sensitive to random noise, we put forward an innovative filtering approach, by which the data can be de-noised in spectral and spatial dimensions synchronously. It shows that the filtering method can remove random noise effectively; therefore, the method can be applied to hyperspectral images. The study region was situated in Zhangye, Gansu Province, China; hyperspectral and multi-angular images of the study region were acquired via the Compact High-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer/Project for On-Board Autonomy (CHRIS/PROBA), on 4 June 2008. After the pre-processing procedures, the DSD method was applied, and the retrieved LAI was validated by ground reference data at 11 sites. Results show that the new LAI inversion method is accurate and effective with the aid of the innovative filtering method.

The stacking faults (SFs) in an AlSb/GaAs (001) interface were investigated using a 300 kV spherical aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). The structure and strain distribution of the single and intersecting (V-shaped) SFs associated with partial dislocations (PDs) were characterized by the [110] HRTEM images and geometric phase analysis, respectively. In the biaxial strain maps εxx and εyy, a SF can be divided into several sections under different strain states (positive or negative strain values). Furthermore, the strain state for the same section of a SF is in contrast to each other in εxx and εyy strain maps. The modification in the strain states was attributed to the variation in the local atomic displacements for the SF in the AlSb film on the GaAs substrate recorded in the lattice image. Finally, the single SF was found to be bounded by two 30° PDs. A pair of 30° PDs near the heteroepitaxial interface reacted to form a Lomer-Cottrell sessile dislocation located at the vertices of V-shaped SFs with opposite screw components. The roles of misfit dislocations, such as the PDs, in strain relaxation were also discussed.

Ti2MnZ (Z=Al, Ga, In) compounds with CuHg2Ti-type structure are predicted to have the different width of band gap in two spin channels and exhibit a nearly spin gapless semiconductivity. There are different origins of the band gap in spin-up and spin-down channels. The width of the band gap can be adjusted by changing the lattice parameter or doping congeners. These compounds are completely-compensated ferrimagnets with a zero magnetic moment.

Magnetic thermal hysteresis (MTH) associated with a paramagnetic (PM)-antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition was found in an Fe-24.4Mn-5.9Si-5.1Cr shape-memory alloy. Aside from the magnetic field (H), the driving rate (v) can also tune the critical temperature of the magnetic transition and cause an increase in MTH. The magnetic phase diagram obtained is discussed. The equation for MTH was deduced based on the Landau model for a PM-AFM transition that includes H and v dependence, which gives a reasonable account of the experimental results.

Vertically aligned zinc oxide nanorod arrays were grown directly using a zinc foil as both source and substrate in pure water at low temperature by a simple hydrothermal reaction. The morphology and crystal structure of the ZnO nanorod arrays were examined by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction, respectively. The nanorods grew along the [0?0?0?1] direction and were 80?nm in diameter and almost 2?µm in length. Directly employing the zinc foil substrate as cathode, the field emission (FE) of the ZnO nanorods presented a two-stage slope behaviour in a ln(J/E2)-1/Eplot according to the Fowler-Nordheim equation. The FE behaviour was investigated by considering the action of the defects in ZnO nanorods based on the measurement of the photoluminescence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wurtzite structural ZnO microneedles with hexagonal cross section were fabricated by vapor-phase transport method and an individual microneedle was employed as a lasing microcavity. Under excitation of a femtosecond pulse laser with 800 nm wavelength, the ultraviolet (UV) laser emission was obtained, which presented narrow linewidth and high Q value. The UV emission, resonant mechanism, and laser mode characteristics were discussed in detail. The results demonstrated that the UV laser originated from the whispering-gallery mode induced by two-photon absorption assisted by Rabi oscillation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The investigation of tectonic controls on CH4 and CO2 emissions was conducted by measuring the fluxes of the gases in the different tectonic units along the northwestern margin of the Ordos Block in China, a region renowned for its intricate tectonic configuration. The mean fluxes of CH4 ranged from −1.5 to 1.1 mg m−2 d−1, while CO2 fluxes spanned from 2.0 to 29.2 g m−2 d−1. Notably, the Minqin, Ordos, and Haiyuan blocks primarily exhibited absorption characteristics for CH4. In contrast, within the Hetao and Yinchuan grabens, both degassing and absorption processes coexist. A striking observation was that blocks with high internal deformation exhibited significantly higher CH4 and CO2 fluxes compared to those in the stable blocks. Additionally, regions experiencing extensional deformation demonstrated greater gas emission than those undergoing compressional deformation. The spatial distribution of CH4 and CO2 fluxes at the study points exhibited a similar trend to faults in the Yinchuan Graben. Our findings revealed that CH4 and CO2 are mainly of biogenic origin, accompanied by abiotic emissions from underground. And the gas source, migration pathway, and tectonic stress were the primary factors influencing gas emission, with tectonic stress playing a pivotal role. This stress controlled the formation of tectonic structures, changed the degassing pathway, and served as the driving force for gas migration. The results of this study offer valuable insights into the mechanisms governing CH4 and CO2 emission in faulted regions. Furthermore, our results may contribute to future assessments aimed at quantifying the contribution of geological sources to greenhouse gas emissions.

The parameters of diaphragm spring are optimized and the dimensional parameters in this design are determined with careful derivation. The global optimization feature of the genetic algorithm is used to optimize the diaphragm spring and compared with the damping effect of the standard algorithms. The results show that the optimization design can significantly reduce the force and realize vibration control of the clutch when the design requirements are met. Due to the large error in calculating the vibration characteristics of diaphragm spring by the commonly used A-L method, the finite element method is used to study the influence of the separation finger structure on the load-deflection characteristics of diaphragm spring. To this end, three different window shapes of diaphragm springs are verified in real-life measurements, and the effective pressure test data for three types of diaphragm springs (type A, type B and type C) are selected. Finally, the load displacement of the peak and valley is obtained by summing their averages under loading and unloading of each diaphragm spring model. Moreover, a new method for calculating the vibration characteristics is obtained by introducing the genetic algorithms into the optimal design of diaphragm springs. Compared the A-L method, the finite element method and the proposed method with the measured data, it is verified that the proposed method has high accuracy in calculating the vibration characteristics of diaphragm springs.

The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitter established by observations with ground-based gamma-ray detectors. Here we report the long-term monitoring of M87 from 2021 to 2024 with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). M87 has been detected by LHAASO with a statistical significance ∼ 9 σ . The observed energy spectrum extends to 20 TeV, with a possible hardening at ∼20 TeV and then a clear softening at higher energies. Assuming that the intrinsic spectrum is described by a single power law up to 20 TeV, a tight upper bound on the extragalactic background light intensity is obtained. A strong VHE flare lasting 8 days, with a rise time of ${\tau }_{r}^{\mathrm{rise}}=1.05\pm 0.49$ days and decay time of ${\tau }_{d}^{\mathrm{decay}}=2.17\pm 0.58$ days, was found in early 2022. A possible GeV flare is seen also in Fermi Large Area Telescope data during the VHE flare period. The variability time as short as 1 day seen in the LHAASO data suggests a compact emission region with a size of ∼3 × 10 ^15 δ cm ( δ being the Doppler factor of the emitting region), corresponding to a few Schwarzschild radii of the central supermassive black hole in M87. The continuous monitoring of the source reveals a duty cycle of ∼1% for VHE flares with a flux above 10 ^−11 erg cm ^−2 s ^−1 .

The first source catalog of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) reported the detection of a very high energy gamma-ray source, 1LHAASO J1219+2915. This Letter presents a further detailed study of the spectral and temporal behavior of this pointlike source. The best-fit position of the TeV source (R.A. = 185.°05 ± 0.°04, decl. = 29.°25 ± 0.°03) is compatible with NGC 4278 within ∼0.°03. Variation analysis shows an indication of variability on a timescale of a few months in the TeV band, which is consistent with low-frequency observations. Based on these observations, we report the detection of TeV γ -ray emissions from this low-luminosity active galactic nucleus. The observation by LHAASO's Water Cherenkov Detector Array during the active period has a significance level of 8.8 σ with a best-fit photon spectral index Γ = 2.56 ± 0.14 and a flux f _1–10 TeV = (7.0 ± 1.1 _sta ± 0.35 _syst ) × 10 ^−13 photons cm ^−2 s ^−1 , or approximately 5% of the Crab Nebula. The discovery of VHE gamma-ray emission from NGC 4278 indicates that compact, weak radio jets can efficiently accelerate particles and emit TeV photons.

We present the first catalog of very-high-energy and ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory. The catalog was compiled using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array from 2021 March to 2022 September and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array from 2020 January to 2022 September. This catalog represents the main result from the most sensitive large coverage gamma-ray survey of the sky above 1 TeV, covering decl. from −20° to 80°. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with an extended size smaller than 2° and a significance of detection at >5 σ . Based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. Among the 90 sources, 43 sources are detected with ultra-high energy ( E > 100 TeV) emission at >4 σ significance level. We provide the position, extension, and spectral characteristics of all the sources in this catalog.

The present results may enrich approaches to designing new functional materials, e.g. the elastic and Elinvar alloys.
