In plants, many invading microbial pathogens are recognized by cell-surface pattern recognition receptors, which induce defense responses. Here, we show that the ceramide Phytophthora infestans –ceramide D (Pi-Cer D) from the plant pathogenic oomycete P. infestans triggers defense responses in Arabidopsis . Pi-Cer D is cleaved by an Arabidopsis apoplastic ceramidase, NEUTRAL CERAMIDASE 2 (NCER2), and the resulting 9-methyl–branched sphingoid base is recognized by a plasma membrane lectin receptor–like kinase, RESISTANT TO DFPM-INHIBITION OF ABSCISIC ACID SIGNALING 2 (RDA2). 9-Methyl–branched sphingoid base is specific to microbes and induces plant immune responses by physically interacting with RDA2. Loss of RDA2 or NCER2 function compromised Arabidopsis resistance against an oomycete pathogen. Thus, we elucidated the recognition mechanisms of pathogen-derived lipid molecules in plants.

Carbonaceous chondrites are considered to have originated from C-type asteroids and represent some of the most primitive material in our solar system. Furthermore, since carbonaceous chondrites can contain significant quantities of volatile elements, they may have played a crucial role in supplying volatiles and organic material to Earth and other inner solar system bodies. However, a major challenge of unravelling the volatile composition of chondritic meteorites is distinguishing between which features were inherited from the parent body, and what may be a secondary feature attributable to terrestrial weathering. In December 2020, the Hayabusa2 mission of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) successfully returned surface material from the C-type asteroid (162173) Ryugu to Earth. This material has now been classified as closely resembling CI-type chondrites, which are the most chemically pristine meteorites. The analysis of material from the surface of Ryugu therefore provides a unique opportunity to analyse the volatile composition of material that originated from a CI-type asteroid without the complications arising from terrestrial contamination. Given their highly volatile nature, the noble gas and nitrogen inventories of chondrites are highly sensitive to different alteration processes on the asteroid parent body, and to terrestrial contamination. Here, we investigate the nitrogen and noble gas signature of two pelletized grains collected from the first and second touchdown sites (Okazaki et al., 2022a), to provide an insight into the formation and alteration history of Ryugu. The concentration of trapped noble gas in the Ryugu samples is greater than the average composition of previously measured CI chondrites and are primarily derived from phase Q, although a significant contribution of presolar nanodiamond Xe-HL is noted. The large noble gas concentrations coupled with a significant contribution of presolar nanodiamonds suggests that the Ryugu samples may represent some of the most primitive unprocessed material from the early solar system. In contrast to the noble gases, the abundance of nitrogen and δ15N composition of the two Ryugu pellets are lower than the average CI chondrite value. We attribute the lower nitrogen abundances and δ15N measured in this study to the preferential loss of a 15N-rich phase from our samples during aqueous alteration on the parent planetesimal. The analyses of other grains returned from Ryugu have shown large variations in nitrogen concentrations and δ15N indicating that alteration fluids heterogeneously interacted with material now present on the surface of Ryugu. Finally, the ratio of trapped noble gases to nitrogen is higher than CI chondrites, and is closer to refractory phase Q and nanodiamonds. This indicates that Ryugu experienced aqueous alteration that led to the significant and variable loss of nitrogen, likely from soluble organic matter, without modification of the noble gas budget, which is primarily hosted in insoluble organic matter and presolar diamonds and is therefore more resistant to aqueous alteration., Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, 345, ISSN:0016-7037, ISSN:1872-9533

The complex magnetic ordering of parent compounds of most unconventional superconductors is crucial for the understanding of high-temperature superconductivity (SC). Within this framework, we have performed temperature-dependent magnetotransport experiments on a single crystal of SmFeAsO, a parent compound of iron pnictide superconductors. We observe multiple features in the measured transport properties at temperatures below the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Sm, T < T NSm , which evolve with in-plane magnetic field, suggesting a rich variety of metamagnetic transitions never before observed in this compound. Considering that transport mainly involves Fe d orbitals at the Fermi level, these findings suggest that the features originate from magnetic transitions of the Fe moments sublattice, which in turn may be induced by magnetic transitions of the Sm moments sublattice via the interaction between Fe and Sm moments. We outline a possible scenario in which the Fe moments, strongly affected by the Sm ordering below T NSm, reorder to an in-plane canted AFM structure, which is washed out by the application of an in-plane magnetic field up to 9 T. Our work shows that transport properties are a valuable tool for investigating magnetic ordering in iron pnictide parent compounds, where the interplay of magnetism and SC is believed to be the origin of high-temperature SC.

The study proposes Iterative Feedback Tuning (IFT) with measurable disturbances for disturbance attenuation using regulatory control data. The control system has a feedforward controller from the measurable disturbances as well as a feedback controller. The variance of the closed-loop output is used for the cost criterion. The gradient of the cost criterion in terms of both feedback and feedforward controller parameters are estimated via spectral analysis for single set of regulatory control data. The proposed method has a feature that it makes full use of measurable disturbances. In addition, it has a feature that it does not require a specific experiment for estimating the gradient of the cost criterion. These features facilitate the application of IFT to industrial processes. That is because they usually use an optimal set point value from the aspect of economical evaluation, and require to keep the set point a constant value. A numerical simulation shows the proposed method effectively tune both feedback and feedforward controller parameters.

The effect of K substitution for Ca in Bi2Ca2-xKxCo2Oy (x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.075, 0.10, and 0.125) thermoelectric ceramics, produced via laser floating zone (LFZ) method, have been systematically investigated. XRD patterns are quite similar for all samples and main peaks in the patterns correspond to reflection planes of the thermoelectric phase together with small amount of secondary phases. SEM micrographs revealed well oriented grains along the growth direction, and the presence of three different contrasts, associated through EDS to different phases, namely, black (Co oxide), white (Bi poor phase) and grey (Bi2Ca2Co1.7Oy TE phase). It was also seen that the amount of secondary phases diminishes with K-increase. The room-temperature resistivity values sharply decrease from 0.75 mΩ.m for the undoped sample to 0.44 mΩ.m for the 0.05 K-doped one, increasing for higher doping. Seebeck coefficient also decreases from 190 μV K−1 in the pristine sample, to 160 μV K−1 in all the K-doped ones, at 390 K. Thermal conductivity increases with temperature up to around 250 K, decreasing at higher temperatures. Thermal conductivity at 390 K decreases from 1.1 W K−1 m−1 in the pristine sample to lower values by K-doping, reaching the minimum, 0.9 W K−1 m−1, in the 0.125 K-doped one. Since optical coherence tomography (OCT) was first performed in humans two decades ago, this imaging modality has been widely adopted in research on coronary atherosclerosis and adopted clinically for the optimization of percutaneous coronary intervention. In the past 10 years, substantial advances have been made in the understanding of in vivo vascular biology using OCT. Identification by OCT of culprit plaque pathology could potentially lead to a major shift in the management of patients with acute coronary syndromes. Detection by OCT of healed coronary plaque has been important in our understanding of the mechanisms involved in plaque destabilization and healing with the rapid progression of atherosclerosis. Accurate detection by OCT of sequelae from percutaneous coronary interventions that might be missed by angiography could improve clinical outcomes. In addition, OCT has become an essential diagnostic modality for myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries. Insight into neoatherosclerosis from OCT could improve our understanding of the mechanisms of very late stent thrombosis. The appropriate use of OCT depends on accurate interpretation and understanding of the clinical significance of OCT findings. In this Review, we summarize the state of the art in cardiac OCT and facilitate the uniform use of this modality in coronary atherosclerosis. Contributions have been made by clinicians and investigators worldwide with extensive experience in OCT, with the aim that this document will serve as a standard reference for future research and clinical application. © 2022, Springer Nature Limited.

The effect of intermediate layer densification on the critical current (I c) of Bi-2223 superconducting joints was quantitatively studied. First, we evaluated the phase purity, density, and intergrain critical current density (J c) of Bi-2223 thick film samples simulating the intermediate layer. The samples were uniaxially pressed to increase the film density. After two heat treatments of the pressed film, an increase in J c was achieved. Second, we fabricated superconducting joints by synthesizing an intermediate layer between two Bi-2223 tapes. Applying a uniform uniaxial pressure on the joint resulted in the formation of a homogeneous structure. This process enables the reproducible fabrication of superconducting joints with high n values. The I c of the superconducting joint was increased by intermediate pressing (IP) and two heat treatments. However, pressing at high pressures can mechanically damage filaments in the Bi-2223 tapes, leading to a decrease in I c. Sample characterization showed that the optimum IP pressure range to produce high I c was 1.5–2 × 108 Pa. We confirmed that pressing densified the intermediate layer of the superconducting joints. Our experimental results and analyses reveal that densification of the intermediate layer increases the I c of Bi-2223 superconducting joints.

We extend a stochastic aerosol‐snow albedo model to explicitly simulate dust internally/externally mixed with snow grains of different shapes and for the first time quantify the combined effects of dust‐snow internal mixing and snow nonsphericity on snow optical properties and albedo. Polarization analyses of the terahertz (THz) emission from Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+ δ whisker crystals used for superconducting THz emitters were conducted. The THz emission mode was estimated by a simple polarization measurement, and a simulation study was conducted to examine the validity of the polarization analysis. The refractive index of whisker crystals revealed through the polarization analyses was greater than that of bulk single crystals and agreed well with our previous THz emission report. The simulation study suggested the complex plasma excitation mode of the THz emission, and an interpretation of the refractive index obtained in this study is provided.

In this paper, double imaging by a periodic bi-fold transformation medium is presented. It is shown that a periodic array of axisymmetric isovolumetric coordinate transformation metamaterials has a double imaging with different angles of sight ±θ due to peculiar refractions on the surface of the medium. The condition for the double imaging is presented and the double imaging operations are confirmed based on ray tracing and full-wave simulations.

This paper presents a new retrieval method for inferring the vertical profile of cirrus cloud effective particle size by using solar reflected line spectra in the 1.38‐μm band. The retrieval method is based on the maximum‐photon penetration principle coupled with the constrained linear inversion. This approach takes advantage of the vertical stratification of cirrus cloud effective particle size as well as absorption lines of water vapor of different intensity, which contain rich information on the vertical structure of cloud particle size. Reflected radiances at different wavenumbers provide the effective‐size information at different heights within cirrus associated with photon different penetration depths. Assuming a vertical profile of effective size monotonically decreasing toward cloud top and using results based on “exact” radiative transfer computations, we perform retrieval of the effective size for a number of model cirrus to check for algorithm accuracy. The retrieved profile of effective size is close to the model profile for cirrus optical depth less than about eight with an uncertainty range of 2.2–4.2 μm. In addition, we further carry out a sensitivity study involving the retrieved effective size in connection with different water vapor profiles and demonstrate that the difference from the model is only several percent except for the cloud top if an appropriate wavenumber set is selected. The results from this study suggest that the present method can be applied to realistic remote sensing of the vertical profile of cirrus cloud particle size.

SnS films present great potential as absorber materials. MgSnO films were chosen as a buffer layer forming a heterojunction with SnS for photovoltaic applications. We investigated the effects of Mg on heterojunction solar cell performance. After amorphous MgSnO films were prepared using sol-gel method, SnS films were deposited using thermal evaporation. The SnS/MgSnO structure showed rectifying and photovoltaic characteristics, although the SnS/SnO2 structure exhibited no rectifying characteristic. The SnS/MgSnO solar cell reached conversion efficiency of 2.1%.

The relatively short lifetimes of aerosols in the atmosphere result in climatic and health effects that are strongly dependent on intra-annual variations in particle concentrations. While many studies have examined the seasonal and diurnal variations of regional aerosol optical depth (AOD), understanding the temporal variations in aerosol vertical distribution and particle types is also important for accurate computation of aerosol radiative effects. In this paper, we combine the observations from four satellite-borne sensors and ground-based AOD and fine particle (PM2.5) measurements to investigate the seasonal and diurnal variations of aerosol column loading, vertical distribution, and particle types over three populous regions: the Eastern United States (EUS), Western Europe (WEU), and Eastern and Central China (ECC). In all three regions, column AOD, as well as AOD higher than 800 m above ground level, peaks in summer/spring probably due to accelerated formation of secondary aerosols and hygroscopic growth. However, AOD at height below 800 m mostly peaks in winter except that a second maximum in summer occurs over the EUS region, which is consistent with observed temporal trends in surface PM2.5 concentrations. AOD due to fine particles ( 1.4 μm diameter) generally shows less variability, except for the ECC region where a peak occurs in spring, consistent with the prevalence of airborne dust during this season. When aerosols are classified according to sources, the dominant type is associated with anthropogenic air pollution, which has a similar seasonal pattern as total AOD. Dust and sea-spray aerosols in the WEU region peak in summer and winter, respectively, but do not show an obvious seasonal pattern in the EUS region. Smoke aerosols, as well as absorbing aerosols, present an obvious unimodal distribution with a maximum occurring in summer over the EUS and WEU regions, whereas they follow a bimodal distribution with peaks in August and March (due to crop residue burning) over the ECC region. In general, the nighttime-daytime AOD difference is more positive in summer than in winter, likely attributable to a larger diurnal temperature range in summer. Smoke AOD is much higher in the nighttime than in the daytime. The results of this study can help to improve the current estimates of the climatic and health impacts of aerosols.

A set of parameterizations is developed for spectral single-scattering properties of clean and black carbon (BC)-contaminated snow based on geometric-optics surface wave (GOS) computations, which explicitly resolves BC–snow internal mixing and various snow grain shapes. GOS calculations show that, compared with nonspherical grains, volume-equivalent snow spheres show up to 20% larger asymmetry factors and hence stronger forward scattering, particularly at wavelengths 99%. Based on GOS calculations, BC–snow internal mixing enhances the snow single-scattering coalbedo at wavelengths 99%. Overall, in addition to snow grain size, both BC–snow internal mixing and snow grain shape play critical roles in quantifying BC effects on snow optical properties. The present parameterizations can be conveniently applied to snow, land surface, and climate models including snowpack radiative transfer processes.

The reflection and transmission of polarized light for a cirrus cloud consisting of randomly oriented hexagonal columns were calculated by two very different vector radiative transfer models. The forward peak of the phase function for the ensemble-averaged ice crystals has a value of order 6 × 10 3 so a truncation procedure was used to help produce numerically efficient yet accurate results. One of these models, the Vectorized Line-by-Line Equivalent model (VLBLE), is based on the doubling–adding principle, while the other is based on a vector discrete ordinates method (VDISORT). A comparison shows that the two models provide very close although not entirely identical results, which can be explained by differences in treatment of single scattering and the representation of the scattering phase matrix. The relative differences in the reflected I and Q Stokes parameters are within 0.5% for I and within 1.5% for Q for all viewing angles. In 1971 Hansen [1] showed that for scattering by spherical particles the 3×3 approximation is sufficient to produce accurate results for the reflected radiance I and the degree of polarization (DOP), and he conjectured that these results would hold also for non-spherical particles. Simulations were conducted to test Hansen׳s conjecture for the cirrus cloud particles considered in this study. It was found that the 3×3 approximation also gives accurate results for the transmitted light, and for Q and U in addition to I and DOP. For these non-spherical ice particles the 3×3 approximation leads to an absolute error 2 × 10 − 6 for the reflected and transmitted I , Q and U Stokes parameters. Hence, it appears to be an excellent approximation, which significantly reduces the computational complexity and burden required for multiple scattering calculations.

Previous modeling of snow albedo, a key climate feedback parameter, follows the independent scattering approximation (ISA) such that snow grains are considered as a number of separate units with distances longer than wavelengths. Here we develop a new snow albedo model for widely observed close-packed snow grains internally mixed with black carbon (BC) and demonstrate that albedo simulations match closer to observations. Close packing results in a stronger light absorption for clean and BC-contaminated snow. Compared with ISA, close packing reduces pure snow albedos by up to ~0.05, whereas it enhances BC-induced snow albedo reduction and associated surface radiative forcing by up to 15% (20%) for fresh (old) snow, with larger enhancements for stronger structure packing. Finally, our results suggest that BC-snow albedo forcing and snow albedo feedback (climate sensitivity) are underestimated in previous modeling studies, making snow close packing consideration a necessity in climate modeling and analysis.

We perform a comprehensive intercomparison of the geometric-optics surface-wave (GOS) approach, the superposition T-matrix method, and laboratory measurements for optical properties of fresh and coated/aged black carbon (BC) particles with complex structures. GOS and T-matrix calculations capture the measured optical (i.e., extinction, absorption, and scattering) cross sections of fresh BC aggregates, with 5–20% differences depending on particle size. We find that the T-matrix results tend to be lower than the measurements, due to uncertainty in theoretical approximations of realistic BC structures, particle property measurements, and numerical computations in the method. On the contrary, the GOS results are higher than the measurements (hence the T-matrix results) for BC radii 100 nm. We find good agreement (differences 100 nm. We find small deviations (≤10%) in asymmetry factors computed from the two methods for most BC coating structures and sizes, but several complex structures have 10–30% differences. This study provides the foundation for downstream application of the GOS approach in radiative transfer and climate studies.

Summary Background Nosocomial infections by respiratory viruses undetected by rapid tests are not often diagnosed. For paediatric patients with background diseases, nosocomial infection could be fatal. Aim To determine the relationship between developing symptoms by respiratory viruses undetectable by rapid tests and respiratory risks and to improve the management of infection control. Methods Two episodes of nosocomial infection by human bocavirus (HBoV) and human rhinovirus (HRV) were retrospectively investigated in a tertiary hospital paediatric ward in Japan. Viruses were identified by polymerase chain reaction to determine infection control management. When viruses of the same species were detected from different patients, the virus homology was investigated. The relationship between respiratory risks and developing symptoms was statistically investigated. Findings Three and four patients with respiratory risks in the HBoV and HRV outbreaks, respectively, developed respiratory symptoms. The nucleotide sequences of two patients in the HBoV outbreak and all four patients in the HRV outbreak were phylogenetically close. In both outbreaks, the patients with respiratory risks developed significantly more symptoms than those without any risk (P = 0.035 and 0.018, respectively). After the patients with respiratory infection were separated from those with respiratory risks, no additional nosocomial infection occurred. Conclusion Patients with respiratory risks easily develop respiratory symptoms and acquire severe symptoms of nosocomial infection by those viruses. In a paediatric ward, we should adopt not only standard precautions but also isolation management of the patients with respiratory symptoms, even if they have negative results in rapid tests.

A theoretical black carbon (BC) aging model is developed to account for three typical evolution stages, namely, freshly emitted aggregates, coated BC by soluble material, and BC particles undergoing further hygroscopic growth. The geometric-optics surface-wave (GOS) approach is employed to compute the BC single-scattering properties at each aging stage, which are subsequently compared with laboratory measurements. Theoretical calculations are consistent with measurements in extinction and absorption cross sections for fresh BC aggregates, but overestimate the scattering cross sections for BC mobility diameters of 155, 245, and 320 nm, because of uncertainties associated with theoretical calculations for small particles as well as laboratory scattering measurements. The measured optical cross sections for coated BC by sulfuric acid and for those undergoing further hygroscopic growth are captured by theoretical calculations using a concentric core-shell structure, with differences of less than 20 %. This suggests that the core-shell shape represents the realistic BC coating morphology reasonably well in this case, which is consistent with the observed strong structure compaction during aging. We find that the absorption and scattering properties of fresh BC aggregates vary by up to 60 % due to uncertainty in the BC refractive index, which, however, is a factor of two smaller in the case of coated BC particles. Sensitivity analyses on the BC morphology show that the optical properties of fresh BC aggregates are more sensitive to fractal dimension than primary spherule size. The absorption and scattering cross sections of coated BC particles vary by more than a factor of two due to different coating structures. We find an increase of 20–250 % in absorption and a factor of 3–15 in scattering during aging, significantly depending on coating morphology and aging stages. Applying the aging model to CalNex 2010 field measurements, we show that the resulting BC direct radiative forcing (DRF) first increases from 1.5 to 1.7 W m-2 and subsequently decreases to 1.0 W m-2 during the transport from the Los Angeles Basin to downwind regions, as a result of the competition between absorption enhancement due to coating and dilution of BC concentration. The BC DRF can vary by up to a factor of two due to differences in BC coating morphology. Thus, an accurate estimate of BC DRF requires the incorporation of a dynamic BC aging process that accounts for realistic morphology in climate models, particularly for the regional analysis with high atmospheric heterogeneity.

This study aims to develop a new k–e model that incorporates the effects of snow particles on a flow field. In the first part of this paper, the results of wind-tunnel measurements of a flow over a loose-snow surface are presented. The spatial distributions of the mass flux of drifting snow, wind velocity, and turbulence were simultaneously measured under several different wind-speed conditions. The wind-tunnel data clearly show that wind velocity near the snow surface decreased because of the snow particles. In the latter part of this paper, the basic equations of the k–e model are modified to include new terms to express the effect of snow particles as moving obstacles on a flow field based on the concept of canopy-flow modeling. The model parameters included in the new terms, namely, R p [which is a model parameter related to the moving particle speed in terms of the wind velocity (0 R p C pe (which is a model coefficient included in the transport equation of energy dissipation rate), are optimized by comparing the wind-tunnel measurements and computational fluid dynamics predictions.

We estimate the snow albedo forcing and direct radiative forcing (DRF) of black carbon (BC) in the Tibetan Plateau using a global chemical transport model in conjunction with a stochastic snow model and a radiative transfer model. The annual mean BC snow albedo forcing is 2.9 W m−2 averaged over snow-covered plateau regions, which is a factor of 3 larger than the value over global land snowpack. BC-snow internal mixing increases the albedo forcing by 40–60% compared with external mixing, and coated BC increases the forcing by 30–50% compared with uncoated BC aggregates, whereas Koch snowflakes reduce the forcing by 20–40% relative to spherical snow grains. The annual BC DRF at the top of the atmosphere is 2.3 W m−2 with uncertainties of −70–85% in the plateau after scaling the modeled BC absorption optical depth to Aerosol Robotic Network observations. The BC forcings are attributed to emissions from different regions.

Colletotrichum chlorophyti is a fungal pathogen that infects various herbaceous plants, including crops such as legumes, tomato, and soybean. Here, we present the genome of C. chlorophyti NTL11, isolated from tomato. Analysis of this genome will allow a clearer understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying fungal host range and pathogenicity.

A stochastic approach has been developed to model the positions of BC (black carbon)/dust internally mixed with two snow grain types: hexagonal plate/column (convex) and Koch snowflake (concave). Subsequently, light absorption and scattering analysis can be followed by means of an improved geometric-optics approach coupled with Monte Carlo photon tracing to determine BC/dust single-scattering properties. For a given shape (plate, Koch snowflake, spheroid, or sphere), the action of internal mixing absorbs substantially more light than external mixing. The snow grain shape effect on absorption is relatively small, but its effect on asymmetry factor is substantial. Due to a greater probability of intercepting photons, multiple inclusions of BC/dust exhibit a larger absorption than an equal-volume single inclusion. The spectral absorption (0.2–5 µm) for snow grains internally mixed with BC/dust is confined to wavelengths shorter than about 1.4 µm, beyond which ice absorption predominates. Based on the single-scattering properties determined from stochastic and light absorption parameterizations and using the adding/doubling method for spectral radiative transfer, we find that internal mixing reduces snow albedo substantially more than external mixing and that the snow grain shape plays a critical role in snow albedo calculations through its forward scattering strength. Also, multiple inclusion of BC/dust significantly reduces snow albedo as compared to an equal-volume single sphere. For application to land/snow models, we propose a two-layer spectral snow parameterization involving contaminated fresh snow on top of old snow for investigating and understanding the climatic impact of multiple BC/dust internal mixing associated with snow grain metamorphism, particularly over mountain/snow topography.

The version 6 cloud products of the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) instrument suite are described. The cloud top temperature, pressure, and height and effective cloud fraction are now reported at the AIRS field-of-view (FOV) resolution. Significant improvements in cloud height assignment over version 5 are shown with FOV-scale comparisons to cloud vertical structure observed by the CloudSat 94 GHz radar and the Cloud-Aerosol LIdar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP). Cloud thermodynamic phase (ice, liquid, and unknown phase), ice cloud effective diameter (De), and ice cloud optical thickness (τ) are derived using an optimal estimation methodology for AIRS FOVs, and global distributions for 2007 are presented. The largest values of τ are found in the storm tracks and near convection in the tropics, while De is largest on the equatorial side of the midlatitude storm tracks in both hemispheres, and lowest in tropical thin cirrus and the winter polar atmosphere. Over the Maritime Continent the diurnal variability of τ is significantly larger than for the total cloud fraction, ice cloud frequency, and De, and is anchored to the island archipelago morphology. Important differences are described between northern and southern hemispheric midlatitude cyclones using storm center composites. The infrared-based cloud retrievals of AIRS provide unique, decadal-scale and global observations of clouds over portions of the diurnal and annual cycles, and capture variability within the mesoscale and synoptic scales at all latitudes.

In this paper the flow over regular arrangements of buildings with slanted roofs is numerically studied and its impact on pollutant dispersion is analyzed. By systematically varying the roof slope, we could identify the switching point between a one- and a two-vortex regime inside the street canyons between the buildings. In the one-vortex regime, the pollutant concentration in the street canyon is found to decrease with increasing roof slope, which is related to the rotational speed of the canyon vortex and the aerodynamic roughness felt by the fully-developed flow aloft the street canyons. In the two-vortex regime limited mixing occurs between both vortex cores, resulting in higher near-ground pollutant concentrations. Compared to the widely studied flat-roof case, slightly upward slanted roofs exhibit a lower aerodynamic roughness, yet yield similar air quality in the street canyon.

The effect of surface polarization on the intensity and linear polarization patterns of sunlight in an atmosphere containing a dust aerosol layer is investigated by means of the adding principle for vector radiative transfer in which the surface is treated as a layer without transmission. We present a number of computational results and analysis for three cases: Lambertian (unpolarized isotropic), polarized isotropic, and polarized anisotropic surfaces. An approach has been developed to reconstruct anisotropic 2 � 2 phase matrix elements on the basis of bidirectional-reflectance and linear-polarization patterns that have been measured from polarimeters over various land surfaces. The effect of surface polarization on the simulated intensity patterns over a dust layer is shown to be negligible. However, the differences in the simulated linear polarization patterns between commonly assumed Lambertian and polarized anisotropic cases are substantial for dust optical depths between 0.1 and 0.5 and for surface albedos of 0.07 and 0.4, particularly in backward directions.
