Abstract: Abstract We report a determination of the CKM angle ϕ 3, also known as γ, from a combination of measurements using samples of up to 711 fb −1 from the Belle experiment and up to 362 fb −1 from the Belle II experiment. We combine results from analyses of B + → DK +, B + → Dπ +, and B + → D * K + decays, where D is an admixture of D 0 and D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ mesons, in a likelihood fit to obtain ϕ 3 = (75.2 ± 7.6) ° . We also briefly discuss the interpretation of this result.

Abstract: Abstract We report measurements of the e + e − → B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ , B B ¯ ∗ $$ B{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ , and B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross sections at four energies, 10653, 10701, 10746 and 10805 MeV, using data collected by the Belle II experiment. We reconstruct one B meson in a large number of hadronic final states and use its momentum to identify the production process. In the first 2 – 5 MeV above B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ threshold, the e + e − → B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross section increases rapidly. This may indicate the presence of a pole close to the threshold.

Abstract: Abstract We report results from a study of B ± → DK ± decays followed by D decaying to the CP-even final state K + K − and CP-odd final state K S 0 π 0 $$ {K}_S^0{\pi}^0 $$ , where D is an admixture of D 0 and D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ states. These decays are sensitive to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity-triangle angle ϕ 3. The results are based on a combined analysis of the final data set of 772 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and a data set of 198 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment, both in electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance. We measure the CP asymmetries to be A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ = (+12.5 ± 5.8 ± 1.4)% and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− = (−16.7 ± 5.7 ± 0.6)%, and the ratios of branching fractions to be R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP+ = 1.164 ± 0.081 ± 0.036 and R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP− = 1.151 ± 0.074 ± 0.019. The first contribution to the uncertainties is statistical, and the second is systematic. The asymmetries A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− have similar magnitudes and opposite signs; their difference corresponds to 3.5 standard deviations. From these values we calculate 68.3% confidence intervals of (8.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 16.5 ° ) or (84.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 95.5 ° ) or (163.3 ° < ϕ 3 < 171.5 ° ) and 0.321 < r B < 0.465.

Abstract: The influence of the joint line remnant (JLR) on tensile and fatigue fracture behaviour has been investigated in a friction stir welded Al-Mg-Sc alloy. JLR is one of the microstructural features formed in friction stir welds depending on welding conditions and alloy systems. It is attributed to initial oxide layer on butting surfaces to be welded. In this study, two different tool travel speeds were used. JLR was formed in both welds but its spatial distribution was different depending on the tool travel speeds. Under the tensile test, the weld with the higher heat input fractured partially along JLR, since strong microstructural inhomogeneity existed in the vicinity of JLR in this weld and JLR had weak bonding. Resultantly, the mechanical properties of this weld were deteriorated compared with the other weld. Fatigue crack initiation was not affected by the existence of JLR in all welds. But the crack propagated preferentially along JLR in the weld of the higher heat input, when it initiated on the retreating side. Consequently, such crack propagation behaviour along JLR could bring about shorter fatigue lives in larger components in which crack growth phase is dominant.

Abstract: A356-T6 cast aluminum alloy is a light weight structural material, but fatigue crack initiates and propagates from a casting defect leading to final fracture. Thus it is important to eliminate casting defects. In this study, friction stir processing (FSP) was applied to A356-T6, in which rotating tool with probe and shoulder was plunged into the material and travels along the longitudinal direction to induce severe plastic deformation, resulting in the modification of microstructure. Two different processing conditions with low and high tool rotational speeds were tried and subsequently fully reversed fatigue tests were performed to investigate the effect of processing conditions on the crack initiation and propagation behavior. The fatigue strengths were successfully improved by both conditions due to the elimination of casting defects. But the lower tool rotational speed could further improve fatigue strength than the higher speed. EBSD analyses revealed that the higher tool rotational speed resulted in the severer texture having detrimental effects on fatigue crack initiation and propagation resistances.

Abstract: Magnesium (Mg) alloys are attractive as structural materials due to their light weight and high specific strength. It is well known that Mg alloy has hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structure and only basal slip or twinning can operate during plastic deformation because critical resolved shear stresses of the other slip systems such as pyramidal or prismatic slips are much higher than the basal slip. Thus sometimes characteristic fracture surfaces are formed during stress corrosion cracking (SCC) or fatigue crack propagation (FCP) in Mg alloys, where many parallel lines are formed. These lines are different from so-called fatigue striations, because they are formed even under sustained load condition of SCC. Consequently, electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) technique was applied on the fracture surface, and the formation mechanism of parallel lines was investigated. EBSD-assisted fractography had revealed that the characteristic parallel lines were formed due to the operation of basal slips, not twining. It is considered that hydrogen-enhanced localized plasticity (HELP) mechanism had been activated under corrosive environment

Abstract: We report a measurement of the D^{0} and D^{+} lifetimes using D^{0}→K^{-}π^{+} and D^{+}→K^{-}π^{+}π^{+} decays reconstructed in e^{+}e^{-}→cc[over ¯] data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. The data, collected at center-of-mass energies at or near the ϒ(4S) resonance, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 72 fb^{-1}. The results, τ(D^{0})=410.5±1.1(stat)±0.8(syst) fs and τ(D^{+})=1030.4±4.7(stat)±3.1(syst) fs, are the most precise to date and are consistent with previous determinations.

Abstract: The Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD), with its four double-sided silicon strip sensor layers, is one of the two vertex sub-detectors of Belle II operating at SuperKEKB collider (KEK, Japan). Since 2019 and the start of the data taking, the SVD has demonstrated a reliable and highly efficient operation, even running in an environment with harsh beam backgrounds that are induced by the world's highest instantaneous luminosity. In order to provide the best quality track reconstruction with an efficient pattern recognition and track fit, and to correctly propagate the uncertainty on the hit's position to the track parameters, it is crucial to precisely estimate the resolution of the cluster position measurement. Abstract: Laser-accelerated ions are widely attractive for many fields as a compact and low-cost accelerator. For the application to medical treatment, it is necessary to not only enhance the maximum acceleration energy but also improve beam stability and quality. In this study, we demonstrate a new ion acceleration mechanism using a uniform critical density plasma that yields very high ion energy despite the existence of a laser prepulse. The maximum proton energy in the experiment was approximately 18 MeV accelerated by the laser pulse of 3 x 1019 W/cm2 focused intensity under the conditions of the maximum prepulse contrast ratio of 10-3. Further, heavier particles such as carbon or oxygen present in the plasma were accelerated using the same acceleration field. In addition, a self-created magnetic field in the plasma significantly improved emission divergence.

Abstract: International audience; We report a particle identification (PID) tool developed using energy-loss information in the silicon-strip vertex detector (SVD) of Belle II for charged pions, kaons, and protons using $D^{* + } \to D^{0}[ \to K^{ - }\pi ^{ + }]\pi ^{ + }$ and $\Lambda \to p\pi ^{ - }$ decay samples. The study is based on e^+e^− collision data recorded at the $\Upsilon (4S)$ resonance by Belle II and the results are compared with that of a Monte Carlo sample. The introduction of additional information from the SVD is found to improve the overall PID performance in the low-momentum region.

Abstract: The high design luminosity of the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider will result in challenging levels of beam-induced backgro\ unds in the interaction region. Understanding and mitigating these backgrounds is critical to the success of the Belle~II experi\ ment. We report on the first background measurements performed after roll-in of the Belle II detector, a period known as SuperKE\ KB Phase 2, utilizing both the BEAST II system of dedicated background detectors and the Belle II detector itself. We also repor\ t on first revisions to the background simulation made in response to our findings. Backgrounds measured include contributions f\ rom synchrotron radiation, beam-gas, Touschek, and injection backgrounds. At the end of Phase 2, single-beam backgrounds origina\ ting from the 4 GeV positron Low Energy Ring (LER) agree reasonably well with simulation, while backgrounds from the 7 GeV elect\ ron High Energy Ring (HER) are approximately one order of magnitude higher than simulation. We extrapolate these backgrounds for\ ward and conclude it is safe to install the Belle II vertex detector., Comment: 22 Pages, 33 figures

Abstract: International audience; Belle II is the next generation B Factory experiment operating at the SuperKEKB accelerator complex at KEK in Tsukuba, Japan. It is expected to collect 50 ab−1 of data, with a target instantaneous luminosity of 6.5 × 1035 cm−2s−1, which is about 30 times larger than its predecessor, Belle. In view of the ever increasing Belle II data sample, accurate simulation of the detector is growing in importance. This poses a challenging task of compromising between the realistic modeling of the response of individual detector components and reasonable performance in terms of CPU time of the simulation. In this paper we describe the simulation of the silicon vertex detector, its performance against collision data and optimization.

Abstract: International audience; For stable operation of the Belle II Silicon Vertex Detector in the future high-luminosity operation of SuperKEKB, we plan to reduce readout data-samples per trigger and to apply hit-selection using hit-time. To realize this plan, we developed novel hit-time estimation methods, one of which achieves the resolution of 2.28 ± 0.04 ns evaluated in the current data acquisition mode. A study using Monte Carlo simulation also confirms that the hit-selection based on this hit-time improves track reconstruction performance.

Abstract: International audience; In spring 2019 the Belle II experiment at the high-luminosity SuperKEKB e^+e^− collider (KEK, Japan) has resumed operation after the installation of the new vertex detector. In the first period of operation SuperKEKB has already reached the record luminosity of 2.4 × 10^34 cm^−2 s^−1 which will be increased by about a factor 30 in the coming years. Two inner layers of DEPFET-based pixels and four layers of double-sided silicon strip detectors (Silicon Vertex Detector, SVD) make up this new vertex detector, designed to meet the stringent physics requirements as well as to cope with the high beam background conditions. Since the beginning of data taking, the SVD has been functioning with a very reliable and stable operation and excellent detector performance. The first evidence of radiation effects in the SVD have been observed, which are at the expected level and not affecting performance. This paper will review the performance achieved by the SVD and the lessons learned in the first year of operation that continued even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract: International audience; In spring 2019 the fully equipped Belle II experiment started data taking at the energy of the Y(4S) resonance. The new vertex detector (VXD) consists of two inner layers of DEPFET pixels (PXD) and four outer layers of double-sided silicon strip detectors (SVD). It plays a crucial role in recording high-quality data in the new high-luminosity environment of the SuperKEKB collider, characterized by severe beam backgrounds. The SVD was operated reliably during the 2019 physics run, showing high stability of the noise levels and calibration parameters. The SVD performance, measured with first data, showed excellent hit and tracking efficiencies, high signal-to-noise ratio, and cluster energy distribution in fair agreement with the expectations. Detailed studies of the good spatial resolution achieved will be shown. The excellent hit-time resolution has also been measured, which will be exploited for background rejection in the coming years of running at higher luminosity.

Abstract: International audience; The SuperKEKB electron-positron collider at the KEK laboratory in Japan aims to achieve a maximum luminosity 50$\times$ higher than its predecessors KEKB and PEPII, positioning the Belle II experiment at the forefront of searches for non-standard-model physics in the next decade. High collision intensity implies high beam-induced radiation, which can damage essential Belle II sub-detectors and SuperKEKB components. Twenty-eight diamond sensors, read-out by purpose-built electronics, are installed in the interaction region to measure radiation and prevent damage. This talk introduces the system features and discusses its performance in early Belle II data taking.

Abstract: The Belle II experiment aims to accumulate 50 ab−1 of e + e − collision data at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy collider (Tsukuba, Japan). The first physics data using all Belle II detectors were taken in spring 2019. In the vast physics program of the Belle II experiment, the vertex detector plays a crucial role for the determination of the B -meson decay vertices. It consists of two inner layers of pixelated silicon detectors and four outer layers of double-sided silicon strip detectors (SVD). To achieve a design luminosity of 8 × 1 0 35 cm − 2 s − 1 , 40 times higher than the recorded luminosity of its predecessor, the SuperKEKB collider squeezes the beams to a vertical size of 50 nm (“nano-beam scheme”) and doubles the beam currents. Therefore, the detectors are required to tolerate intense beam induced background due to the very high luminosity. During the 2019 spring run we measured the occupancy rate in the SVD to estimate the level of the beam induced background. With the low initial luminosity, the observed beam induced background mostly originated from Touschek processes and beam-gas scattering within individual beams. Since these different background contributions depend differently on accelerator conditions, such as the beam current, beam size and pressure, they can be disentangled. We estimate the background rate of each contribution and compare them with simulated ones. The results enable us to predict the background levels at increased beam currents and luminosity in the coming years. They also hint at background mitigation measures for running at higher luminosity. In this proceeding we present the results of our study of the beam induced background in the SVD and the prospects for future operation.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the D⁰ and D⁺ lifetimes using D⁰→K⁻π⁺ and D⁺→K⁻π⁺π⁺ decays reconstructed in e⁺e⁻→[Formula: see text] data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e⁺e⁻ collider. The data, collected at center-of-mass energies at or near the Υ(4S) resonance, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 72 fb⁻¹. The results, τ(D⁰)=410.5±1.1(stat)±0.8(syst) fs and τ(D⁺)=1030.4±4.7(stat)±3.1(syst) fs, are the most precise to date and are consistent with previous determinations.

Abstract: The Belle II experiment features a substantial upgrade of the Belle detector and will operate at the SuperKEKB energy-asymmetric e+e− collider at KEK in Tsukuba, Japan. The accelerator completed its first phase of commissioning in 2016, and the Belle II detector saw its first electron-positron collisions in April 2018. Belle II features a newly designed silicon vertex detector based on double-sided strip layers and DEPFET pixel layers. A subset of the vertex detector was operated in 2018 to determine background conditions (Phase 2 operation). The collaboration completed full detector installation in January 2019, and the experiment started full data taking. This paper will report on the final arrangement of the silicon vertex detector part of Belle II with a focus on online monitoring of detector conditions and data quality, on the design and use of diagnostic and reference plots, and on integration with the software framework of Belle II. Data quality monitoring plots will be discussed with a focus on simulation and acquired cosmic and collision data.

Abstract: After the growth of GaSb buffer layers using Bi as a surfactant, InAs layers were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on Ge (1 1 1) vicinal substrates. The effects of the As beam pressure and the substrate temperature on the surface morphology and the twin generation have been investigated by atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. It has been shown that, in spite of the rather rough surface of the GaSb buffer layer, a flat and twin-free InAs layer can be grown by adopting the appropriate As beam pressure and substrate temperature for the InAs growth. The use of the InAs flattening layer together with the GaSb twin suppression layer is expected to open the possibility of manufacturing devices for which flat interfaces are vital, e.g., InAs/GaSb superlattice infrared detectors, InAs based hetero-structure field-effect transistors, and so on.

Abstract: Plane bending fatigue test had been conducted to investigate fatigue crack initiation mechanism in coarse-grained magnesium alloy, AZ31, under different mean stress. The initial crystallographic structure was analyzed by an electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) method. When the test had been conducted at the load ratio R=-1, secondary twin operated in a primary twin and resulted in the fatigue crack initiation. On the other hand at R=0.1, dual twin was activated and crack has initiated along the grain boundary.

Abstract: Ultra intense laser light propagation in a homogeneous overdense plasma was investigated using a plastic foam target filling a polyimide tube. Laser propagation into overdense plasma was measured via Doppler red shift of the reflected laser light from the moving plasma at 0.3-0.4 of speed of light. We also observed strongly collimated electron beam possibly caused by the magnetic field surrounding the plasma channel, and high energy X-rays emitted via synchrotron radiation by the oscillating electrons inside the channel. These features imply that UIL propagates inside the overdense plasma as predicted in PIC calculation, and are very important for direct irradiation scheme of fast ignition. Publisher PDF

Abstract: We investigated current–voltage characteristics (IVCs) of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) for c-axis oriented La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 thin films. We fabricated IJJs with two kinds of structures. One was a mesa structure with a junction area of 22–194 μm2 fabricated by using conventional photolithography and Ar-ion milling, and the other was a microbridge structure with a junction area of 1.1–3.6 μm2 fabricated by using a focused-ion-beam technique. The mesa-type IJJs exhibited resistively-shunted-junction-like IVCs with no hysteresis. The temperature dependence of their critical current followed the Ambegaokar–Baratoff relation. IVCs of the microbridge-type IJJs, on the other hand, exhibited voltage jump and clear hysteresis. The different behaviors between the mesa-type and the microbridge-type IJJs were explained by the different numbers of grain boundaries involved in the IJJs.

Abstract: Summary Cracking of seed coats in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) deteriorates the external appearance of seeds and reduces their commercial value. Two types of cracking have been reported that occur in some cultivars: Type I with irregular cracks and Type II with net-like cracks. This study was conducted to determine the genetic basis of net-like cracking. Genetic analysis was performed using F1 plants produced by crossing Uzuramame, a Japanese landrace with black seed coats having net-like cracking and a Clark mutant with black seed coats, their F2 population and F3 lines. Degree of cracking in individual plants was calculated by averaging cracking index (no cracking: 0 to severe cracking: 4) of total or 100-seed samples (average cracking index, ACI). Uzuramame exhibited intense cracking, whereas the Clark mutant showed slight cracking. Intermediate degree of cracking in F1 plants suggested incomplete dominance. ACI of F2 plants was continuously distributed. Gene number involved was estimated to be 1.4 by Wright’s method. All F3 lines derived from F2 plants with ACI more than 2.8 displayed severe cracking phenotypes. In contrast, F3 lines derived from F2 plants with ACI less than 2.8 segregated from low to high ACI (0.5 to 3.2). When F2 plants were classified as slight (ACI 2.8) cracking, the frequency distribution of the F2 plants fitted to a 3:1 ratio. Genotypes of SSR marker Satt264 that is closely linked to SoyPRP1 locus for proline-rich cell wall protein had a minor effect on ACI. Further, seed weight was positively associated with ACI (r =0 .46 ∗∗ ). Our results suggest that net-like cracking is controlled primarily by a major gene, and SoyPRP1 and gene(s) contributing to seed weight may have minor effects on the intensity of cracking.

Abstract: A 53-year-old male underwent more than 10 surgical treatments over 14 years, including a simple excision and local flap transfer, after recurrences of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of the head. Clinical results indicated that simple excision of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans should not be performed as initial treatment. Instead, free flap transplantation, which permits a wide excision and complete reconstruction, should be the first treatment option.

Abstract: We have fabricated c-axis micro-bridges of La2−xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) single crystals in order to characterize the LSCO intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs). The current–voltage characteristics of the micro-bridges exhibited a large hysteresis with a voltage jump of the order 0.5–3 V and no multiple branching structures. A superconducting energy gap was clearly observed on the quasi-particle branch and showed BCS-like temperature dependence. In addition, the temperature dependence of the critical current of the IJJ was in good agreement with the theoretical curves for superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) Josephson junctions. These results demonstrate that the IJJs of LSCO are characterized as stacked series SIS junctions.

Abstract: Experiments with a solid Cu foam (∼1.3 g/cm3) sphere coated by a 20 μm CH ablator are performed on the GEKKO-LFEX laser facility to study the effect of hot electron preheat on the implosion performance. When the target is imploded by the GEKKO lasers (∼1.2 × 1015 W/cm2 in peak intensity), plenty of hot electrons are measured through the induced Cu Kα emission, indicating that the target could suffer strong preheat. This suffering of preheat is confirmed by the temporal evolution of the target self-emission, which is well reproduced by a 2D cylindrically symmetric radiative hydrodynamic code (FLASH) when a module handling the hot electron preheat is coupled. The results given by this benchmarked code indicate that, in the typical experiments with a small (∼200 μm in diameter) solid sphere target conducted on the GEKKO-LFEX laser facility, the hot electron preheat greatly degrades the implosion performance, reducing the peak areal densities of a Cu foam sphere and a CD sphere by ∼20% and ∼35%, respectively.

Abstract: In this study, the numerical simulation of fatigue crack propagation in plane strain state was conducted using the discrete dislocations method and the effect of pile-ups of edge dislocations in this method is discussed. In the numerical simulation, the nucleation and the motion of dislocations are constrained by the pile-ups of dislocations which are nucleated in the past cycles, thus, the crack propagation rate after the second cycle is decreased compared with the first cycle.

34. Suppression of soybean β-conglycinin genes by a dominant gene, Scg-1

Abstract: β-Conglycinin (7S globulin) is a predominant seed storage protein found in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. A spontaneous mutant lacking the β-conglycinin subunits, α´, α and β, has been identified among Japanese wild soybean genetic resources. Although a multigene family encodes the subunits and is distributed in different linkage groups, a single dominant gene, Scg-1 (a suppressor of β-conglycinin), controls the mutant trait. This report characterized the genetic and molecular basis of Scg-1. The null trait was caused not by either structural defects or changes in the β-conglycinin subunit genes, but by a lack of transcription of the genes, indicating that Scg-1 suppresses expression of all the structural genes. Linkage analysis revealed that the Scg-1 locus was located in the same chromosomal region as the α and β subunit genes, which are tightly linked to each other. Furthermore, the methylation of the chromosomal region containing the Scg-1 and α and β subunit loci was observed, suggesting that the deficiency is associated with the silencing of multicopy genes. Scg-1 had no obvious effect on the plant growth, so it will be a useful gene source for manipulation of the protein composition in soybean seeds.

Abstract: We investigated current–voltage ( I – V ) properties of intrinsic Josephson junctions in c -axis micro-bridges (∼20 μm 2 area for ab plane and ∼1 μm length along the c -axis) of La 2− x Sr x CuO 4 single crystals. The micro-bridges were fabricated by the focused-ion-beam etching technique. We found periodic conductance peaks below the gap voltage in the RCSJ-like I – V curves of the intrinsic Josephson junctions. We discuss possible explanations and show that the subgap structures can be explained by coupling between ac Josephson oscillation and Josephson plasma oscillation in La 2− x Sr x CuO 4 .

Abstract: Media with excellent signal to noise properties and adequate high temperature thermal stability have been developed for over 20 Gbit/in/sup 2/ recording. The media are fabricated by dc magnetron sputtering onto textured NiP films on Al-Mg substrates. The magnetic layer is a CoCr-based quaternary alloy with (11.0) preferred orientation on a Cr alloy [002] underlayer. The average grain diameter has been reduced to an average of 0.3 memu/cm/sup 2/ consistent with magnetometry measurements.

Abstract: We have successfully fabricated Josephson junctions on single crystals of La/sub 2-x/Sr/sub x/CuO/sub 4/ (LSCO) high-T/sub c/ superconductor using niobium (Nb) as counter electrodes. A reproducible fabrication process has been established taking into account the surface state of LSCO is dominantly affecting junction properties. The surface state of LSCO has been characterized using XPS. The current voltage curves (IVCs) of Nb/LSCO junctions exhibit RSJ like Josephson junction properties. Due to intrinsic Josephson effect of LSCO, the IVCs branches are first observed for the Nb/LSCO junctions on LSCO mesa whose interfaces are parallel to the ab-plane of LSCO.

Abstract: We developed a novel piezoelectric microactuator for dual-stage actuator systems in magnetic disk drives. This microactuator is based on the shear deformation of piezoelectric elements, and drives the head suspension assembly. The actuator is suitable for thin devices, and is easily manufactured because of its simple stack configuration. We installed the microactuator in a 2.5" prototype drive, and evaluated the servo system of the dual-stage actuator. This paper describes the structure of our piezoelectric actuator, its mechanical characteristics, and the evaluation of the dual-stage actuator servo system.

Abstract: Tungsten carbide with 12% cobalt (WC-12Co) was thermally sprayed by a high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) method on A5052 aluminum alloy as an interlayer with the thicknesses of 25, 70 and 120 m and subsequently diamond-like carbon (DLC) was deposited with the thickness of 15 m to fabricate DLC/WC12Co hybrid coating. Rotary bending fatigue tests were conducted using the specimens with DLC/WC-12Co hybrid coating and the thickness effect of interlayer on fatigue behavior was investigated. The fatigue strengths of the specimens with WC-12Co single layer were higher than those of the substrate. The fatigue strengths increased with increasing the thickness of WC-12Co layer. The specimens with hybrid coating exhibited higher fatigue strengths than the specimens with WC-12Co single layer when the thickness of WC-12Co layer was the same. The thinnest WC-12Co interlayer led to the mostly improved fatigue strengths by hybrid coating system. In the specimens with hybrid coating, DLC film could suppress the micro-cracking of WC-12Co interlayer, and thus the fatigue strengths were improved. When the interlayer became thicker, the effect of thin DLC film became weaker and resulted in the lower improvement of fatigue strengths.

Abstract: We fabricated Nb/AlO x /Nb Josephson junctions on Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+ δ (BSCCO) single crystals to detect the Josephson plasma in BSCCO. A thin gold layer was employed between BSCCO and Nb/AlO x /Nb to avoid interdiffusion of oxygen in BSCCO. We measured the current–voltage properties of the Nb/AlO x /Nb junctions in a liquid helium bath, and observed clear periodic step structures. A characteristic frequency corresponding to the voltage spacing of the steps was 63 GHz, which agreed with the Josephson plasma frequency of BSCCO. The result indicates that the Josephson plasma in BSCCO can interact with the ac Josephson current of the closely coupled Nb/AlO x /Nb Josephson junctions.

Abstract: A real-index guided InGaAlP visible laser diode with a small beam astigmatism has been developed. The structure, fabrication process, and optical properties of the laser are described. The laser is characterized by a slab-coupled waveguide structure with self-aligned current confinement. The laser was fabricated with a two-step metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) process. The laser exhibited stable fundamental transverse mode oscillation with a threshold current as low as 40 mA and a lasing wavelength of 670 nm. As a result of real-index guiding, a small beam astigmatism less than 2 mu m has been achieved. The laser exhibited a stable operation for 2000 h under 3 mW at 30 degrees C. >

Abstract: 大腸癌治癒切除におけるmitomycin C (MMC), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), tegafur (FT)を用いた補助化学療法の有用性を検討するために,封筒法による無作為比較対象研究(1979年12月～1983年8,月)を行った.結腸癌と直腸癌に分け,結腸癌ではA群(MMC 50mg術中腸管内投与+FT 1年間投与),B群(5-FU 1,500mg術中腸管内投与+FT 1年間投与)の2群を比較し,直腸癌ではA群(MMC 10～4mg/body/回間歌投与+FT 1年間投与),B群(5-FU 250mg/body/day術後2週間連日投与+FT 1年間投与)の2群を比較した.集積症例は378例(結腸癌171例,直腸癌207例)であった.5年生存率および健存率では,結腸癌A,B群問に差は認められなかったが,直腸癌ではA群に比しB群に予後良好な傾向を認め,特に直腸癌DukesC症例においては有意差(生存率p=0.047,健存率p=0.013)を認めた.

Abstract: We deposited spin-valve films with a CoFeB/Ru/CoFeB synthetic ferrimagnet pinned trilayer and a PdPtMn anti-ferromagnet layer and investigated their MR responses. We also fabricated spin-valve heads having a Ta(50 /spl Aring/)/NiFe(20 /spl Aring/)/CoFeB(15 /spl Aring/)/Cu(30 /spl Aring/)/CoFeB(25 /spl Aring/)/Ru(8 /spl Aring/)/ CoFeB(15 /spl Aring/)/PdPtMn(150 /spl Aring/)/Ta(60 /spl Aring/) synthetic ferrimagnet spin-valve film. We tested the read/write performance on a low noise CoCrPt-based quaternary alloy thin-film disk. A narrow, effective read track-width of less than 0.4 /spl mu/m was measured. We obtained a normalized output with respect to track-width of 2500 /spl mu/Vpp//spl mu/m. Using a EPR4ML channel with a 16/17 code and an inductive head with a track-width of 0.45 /spl mu/m, we found a bit error rate to be less than 3.45/spl times/10/sup -6/ without error correction at a data rate of 13.3 MB/s and at a linear density of 405 kBPI on the similar disk. Furthermore, from squeeze measurements, we found the track-pitch to be 0.505 /spl mu/m, which corresponds to a track density of 50.3 kTPI. As a result, we accomplished an areal density of 20.4 Gbit/in/sup 2/ with a linear density of 405 kBPI and a track density of 50.3 kTPI using PdPtMn/CoFeB synthetic ferrimagnet spin-valve heads.

Abstract: A longitudinal medium was developed for 20 Gb/in/sup 2/ recording. This medium has a coercivity of 3380 Oe and M/sub r//spl delta/=0.42 memu/cm/sup 2/. Modulation noise and track edge noise were well suppressed by the decrease in the activation volume. Remanent magnetization is stable; at 338 K, the coefficient of remanence reduction was -0.066 dB/decade in a reverse field of 460 Oe which corresponds to the demagnetizing field in a bit at 430 kFCI. Recording bits of 430 kfci were confirmed by MFM. The BER was 3.45/spl times/10/sup -6/ using a conventional EPR4 channel with a 16/17 code rate at 405 kBPI (430 kFCI). From squeeze measurements, the track pitch was 0.505 /spl mu/m (50.3 ktpi) including a guard band of 0.06 /spl mu/m. 20.4 Gb/in/sup 2/ recording is made possible by the combination of a narrow gap spin-valve head and a low noise medium.

50. Efficient propagation of ultra-intense laser beam in dense plasma

Abstract: Ultra intense laser propagation in extended, dense plasma is investigated through optical and proton probing. When a >1 kJ, 10 ps laser propagates into a long-density scale length plasma, channel formation was observed up to 0.6 nc from the analysis of optical probe images. The proton track analysis shows the formation of strong electric and magnetic fields along the plasma channel, which may lead to the observed collimated electron beam on the laser axis. These results are promising for the feasibility of the direct irradiation scheme of fast ignition.
