Abstract

A massless particle beyond the Standard Model is searched for in the two-body decay Σ+→p+invisible using (1.0087±0.0044)×1010 J/ψ events collected at a center-of-mass energy of s=3.097GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction B(Σ+→p+invisible) is determined to be 3.2×10−5 at the 90% confidence level. This is the first search for a flavor-changing neutral current process with missing energy in hyperon decays which plays an important role in constraining new physics models.

Abstract

The spin and parity of the charmed mesons Ds⁎+, D⁎0 and D⁎+ are determined for the first time to be JP=1− with significances greater than 10σ over other hypotheses of 2+ and 3−, using an e+e− collision data sample with an integrated luminosity of 3.19 fb−1 collected by the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 4.178 GeV. Different spin-parity hypotheses are tested via a helicity amplitude analysis of the processes e+e−→Ds⁎+Ds−, D⁎0D0 and D⁎+D−, with Ds⁎+→Ds+γ, D⁎0→D0π0, and D⁎+→D+π0. The results confirm the quark model predictions.

Abstract

We search for the semi-leptonic decays Λc+→Λπ+π−e+νe and Λc+→pKS0π−e+νe in a sample of 4.5fb−1 of e+e− annihilation data collected in the center-of-mass energy region between 4.600GeV and 4.699GeV by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII. No significant signals are observed, and the upper limits on the decay branching fractions are set to be B(Λc+→Λπ+π−e+νe)

We report a search for a dark photon using 14.9 fb−1 of e+e− annihilation data taken at center-of-mass energies from 4.13 to 4.60 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII storage ring. The dark photon is assumed to be produced in the radiative annihilation process of e+e− and to predominantly decay into light dark matter particles, which escape from the detector undetected. The mass range from 1.5 to 2.9 GeV is scanned for the dark photon candidate, and no significant signal is observed. The mass dependent upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the coupling strength parameter ϵ for a dark photon coupling with an ordinary photon vary between 1.6×10−3 and 5.7×10−3.

Abstract

The initial-stage oxidation behaviours of unmodified, Pt and Pt+Hf modified NiAl coating are systematically investigated by employing the photo-stimulated luminescence spectroscopy (PSLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique. Both Pt and Hf additions can retard the θ- to α- Al2O3 phase transformation. The oxidation rates of the modified NiAl coatings are initially higher than that of the unmodified NiAl coating due to the longer presence of θ-Al2O3. However, they decrease drastically when the oxide in the scale turns to be α-Al2O3 dominantly. The delayed phase transformation in the modified coatings results in lower residual stress within the oxide scale.

Abstract

We search for an axion-like particle (ALP) a through the process ψ(3686)→π+π−J/ψ, J/ψ→γa, a→γγ in a data sample of (2.71±0.01)×109 ψ(3686) events collected by the BESIII detector. No significant ALP signal is observed over the expected background, and the upper limits on the branching fraction of the decay J/ψ→γa and the ALP-photon coupling constant gaγγ are set at 95% confidence level in the mass range of 0.165≤ma≤2.84GeV/c2. The limits on B(J/ψ→γa) range from 8.3×10−8 to 1.8×10−6 over the search region, and the constraints on the ALP-photon coupling are the most stringent to date for 0.165≤ma≤1.468GeV/c2.

Abstract

Apyrases belong to the ATPase family of enzymes that hydrolyze phosphoanhydride bonds of nucleoside tri- and di-phosphates. These enzymes differ markedly from other phosphohydrolases due to their high specific activity, broad divalent cation requirement, broad nucleotide substrate specificity, and insensitivity to various inhibitors. In the past 30 years, apyrases have been frequently studied in mammals. In comparison, research of apyrases in plants has received little attention, despite the growth of plants being closely related to the apyrases. In this review, we summarize the research of the apyrases in Arabidopsis thaliana and point to the possible future directions of research. Apyrases have seven members found in Arabidopsis thaliana, each with different properties and functions. Currently, the characterization and functions of AtAPY1 and AtAPY2 have been reported, though, to the best of our knowledge, the other apyrase members (AtAPY3 to 7) have not yet been sufficiently described. In this review, we also summarize the progress being made and the difficulties encountered in apyrase research in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Abstract

We report a search for a dark photon using $14.9$~fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data taken at center-of-mass energies from 4.13 to 4.60~GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII storage ring. The dark photon is assumed to be produced in the radiative annihilation process of $e^+e^-$ and to predominantly decay into light dark matter particles, which escape from the detector undetected. The mass range from 1.5 to 2.9~GeV is scanned for the dark photon candidate, and no significant signal is observed. The mass dependent upper limits at the 90$\%$ confidence level on the coupling strength parameter $\epsilon$ for a dark photon coupling with an ordinary photon vary between $1.6\times 10^{-3}$ and $5.7\times10^{-3}$., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The problem of hydroelastic wave diffraction by a surface-piercing vertical circular cylinder mounted on the bottom of an ice-covered channel is considered. The ice sheet is modelled as an elastic thin plate with homogeneous properties, while the linearized velocity potential theory is adopted to describe the motion of the fluid. The solution starts from the Green function satisfying all other boundary conditions apart from that on the body surface. This is obtained through applying a Fourier transform in the longitudinal direction of the channel and adopting an eigenfunction expansion in the vertical direction. The boundary conditions on the side walls and ice edges are imposed through an orthogonal product. Through the Green function, the velocity potential due to a surface-piercing structure with arbitrary shape can be expressed through a source distribution formula derived in this work, in which only integrals over the body surface and its interaction line with the ice sheet need to be retained. For a vertical circular cylinder, the unknown source distribution can be expanded further into a Fourier series in the circumferential direction, and then the analytical solution of the velocity potential can be obtained further. Extensive results and discussions are provided for the hydrodynamic forces and vertical shear forces on the cylinder, as well as the deflection and strain of the ice sheet. In particular, the behaviour of the solution near one of the natural frequencies of the channel is investigated in detail.

Abstract

The problem of interaction of a uniform current with a submerged horizontal circular cylinder in an ice-covered channel is considered. The fluid flow is described by linearized velocity potential theory and the ice sheet is treated as a thin elastic plate. The potential due to a source or the Green function satisfying all boundary conditions apart from that on the body surface is first derived. This can be used to derive the boundary integral equation for a body of arbitrary shape. It can also be used to obtain the solution due to multipoles by differentiating the Green function with its position directly. For a transverse circular cylinder, through distributing multipoles along its centre line, the velocity potential can be written in an infinite series with unknown coefficients, which can be determined from the impermeable condition on a body surface. A major feature here is that different from the free surface problem, or a channel without the ice sheet cover, this problem is fully three-dimensional because of the constraints along the intersection of the ice sheet with the channel wall. It has been also confirmed that there is an infinite number of critical speeds. Whenever the current speed passes a critical value, the force on the body and wave pattern change rapidly, and two more wave components are generated at the far-field. Extensive results are provided for hydroelastic waves and hydrodynamic forces when the ice sheet is under different edge conditions, and the insight of their physical features is discussed.

Abstract

Silver fox and blue fox belong to different genera, and the hybrid males are reproductively sterile. In the present study, there was a comparison of testicular and epididymal morphology and serum hormone concentrations among silver foxes, blue foxes, and the hybrids during the pre-breeding period, using 20 male silver foxes, 20 male blue foxes, 15 male HSBs (silver fox male × blue fox female hybrids) and 15 male HBSs (blue fox male × silver fox female hybrids), respectively. Hybrids had a smaller diameter of seminiferous tubules than pure-species males, and testes of hybrid males did not differ in mean size and relative weight from pure-species males. There were many Sertoli cells and spermatogenic cells in silver foxes and blue foxes, while numbers of spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes were less with no secondary spermatocytes in the hybrids. Furthermore, mean serum testosterone and estradiol concentrations in the hybrids were less, and FSH, LH, and PRL were greater than that in silver foxes and blue foxes (P 0.05), suggesting that lesser concentrations of testosterone and estradiol and greater concentrations of FSH, LH and prolactin can inhibit the completion of spermatogenesis during the pre-breeding period. The results indicate that fox hybrid sterility may result from failures at the early stages of spermatogenesis.

Abstract

Apyrases belong to the ATPase family of enzymes that hydrolyze phosphoanhydride bonds of nucleoside tri- and di-phosphates. These enzymes differ markedly from other phosphohydrolases due to their high specific activity, broad divalent cation requirement, broad nucleotide substrate specificity, and insensitivity to various inhibitors. In the past 30 years, apyrases have been frequently studied in mammals. In comparison, research of apyrases in plants has received little attention, despite the growth of plants being closely related to the apyrases. In this review, we summarize the research of the apyrases in Arabidopsis thaliana and point to the possible future directions of research. Apyrases have seven members found in Arabidopsis thaliana, each with different properties and functions. Currently, the characterization and functions of AtAPY1 and AtAPY2 have been reported, though, to the best of our knowledge, the other apyrase members (AtAPY3 to 7) have not yet been sufficiently described. In this review, we also summarize the progress being made and the difficulties encountered in apyrase research in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Abstract

The approach of pre-coating Ni on NiTi powder was adopted as an effective route to address the thermomechanical property degradation of NiTi alloy caused by Ni-loss during the printing process of laser powder bed fusion. The electroless plating process of Ni on NiTi powder was initiated with the removal of the outermost TiO2 layer by alkaline solution and the exposure of Ni catalytic nucleation site. The newly exposed Ni was an active catalyst for coating Ni and eventually triggered the deposition of Ni on NiTi powder via self-catalytic reaction. The intrinsic homogeneity of Ni, as a major alloying element in NiTi powder, ensured high uniformity of Ni-coating on the surface of the powder and good sphericity, necessary for good printability. Furthermore, Ni-coating increased laser absorbability, and a higher content of Ni compared to the theoretical value was thereby required to compensate for the Ni-loss. Simultaneously, densification was enhanced even at lower laser energy density on using Ni-coated powder. During the printing process, ultrafine Ni-coating was rapidly homogenized such that the thermomechanical property was completely recovered. As a consequence, it is underscored that Ni-loss can be addressed by compensating Ni on the original powder prior to the printing process, providing a new pathway toward printing of high-performance shape memory alloys.

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for mammals. Inadequate Se can aggravate the development of inflammatory bowel diseases. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are characterized by low toxicity and anti-inflammatory properties with functional modifications. Poria cocos polysaccharide (PYN) was purchased from Elicityl. Antibodies included anti-COX-2 and anti-TNF-α were obtained from Cell SignalingTechnology. Cell uptake of PYNSeNPs and SeNPs during the time course was compared and evidenced by images taken by fluorescence microscope. The particle-size distribution of PYN-SeNPs was 35–80 nm, which is smaller compared to 305–900 nm of SeNPs. Acute colitis mice were treated with/without PYNSeNPs and the body weights were measured daily. The effect of PYN-SeNPs on colitis was detected by Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. PYN-SeNPs supplementation may offer therapeutic potential to reduce the symptoms of acute colitis through its anti-inflammatory actions.

Abstract

Foot pad dermatitis (FPD) is a serious problem of the modern poultry industry, negatively affecting birds' welfare and health status, walking and feeding activity, growth performance, carcass quality, and economic performance of meat production. The gut microbiome in poultry with FPD has not been previously investigated. Therefore, we compared the cecal microbiomes of 8 breeding ducks with FPD to 8 control ducks (breeders with apparently healthy feet) by pyrosequencing the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene. The results showed a significant β-diversity (P < 0.05) of cecal microbiota presented between healthy and FPD-affected breeder ducks. The plasma endotoxins, interleukin 1β (IL-1β), IL-17, IL-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor-α concentration, and the abundance of class Clostridia in FPD-affected ducks was markedly higher (P < 0.05), however, the abundance of genus Prevotella, Lactobacillus, Lachnospiraceae UCG-008, and the Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio in FPD-affected ducks was significantly lower (P < 0.05) when compared to healthy ducks. These findings suggest when duck breeders are affected with FPD, ducks show an increased inflammatory response and a difference of structure and composition of the cecal microbiome.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to study the diffraction of second order Stokes waves by four cylinders in a uniform current and mainly focus on the near-trapping phenomenon. A time domain second-order theory is employed to establish the mathematical Smodel by splitting the total potential into the disturbed velocity potential caused by current, the first- or linear and second-order potentials, which satisfy their own boundary conditions. Each potential is calculated through the finite element method (FEM). Numerical results for four bottom-mounted cylinders in a uniform current are provided to show the resonant behaviour of waves and hydrodynamic forces including linear and second order at near-trapped frequencies, and the current effect on the wave and force are also analysed and discussed. Some results for a single- and four-cylinder cases are compared with previous studies.

The addition of Ni to Ti–Si system significantly decreased the ignition difficulty of self-propagation high-temperature synthesis (SHS), increased the product purity and improved the mechanical properties of bulk Ti 5 Si 3 material. The formation of Ti 5 Si 3 was controlled by two mechanisms: (i) solid-state reaction: evolution of unstable Ti–Si intermediate phases to Ti 5 Si 3 through the mutual diffusion of Ti and Si atoms; and (ii) Ni-induced dissolution-precipitation: Ni reacted with Si and Ti to form Ni–Si and Ni–Ti intermetallics and the heat released from these reactions created massive Ni–Si and Ni–Ti liquids; subsequently, these liquid diffused mutually to form Ni–Ti–Si ternary liquid and finally massive Ti 5 Si 3 precipitated out of the liquid. The latter mechanism played a dominant role in forming Ti 5 Si 3 and led to the direct formation of Ti 5 Si 3 , which decreased the product impurity. The good binder effect of Ni for Ti 5 Si 3 contributed to the improved fracture toughness and enhanced density.

A study has been made of the effect of non-lubricated warm die (200 C) compaction on the densification of hydride-dehydride (HDH) Ti powder, pre-alloyed (PA) Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al powders, and HDH Ti and V-Fe-Al master alloy powder blends, compared to cold die compaction. Depending on the compaction pressure, which was varied from 200 to 1000 MPa, non-lubricated warm die (200 C) compaction was very effective for -100 mesh HDH Ti powder, increasing the green density by 5.0-9.4% theoretical density (TD). Die wall lubrication with stearic acid showed no influence on the green density when compacted at 800 MPa. With warm die (200 C) compaction, achieving a green density of greater than 90%TD was straightforward for HDH Ti powder when compacted at ≥750 MPa. Accordingly, near pore-free (≥99.5%TD) Ti microstructures were obtained after sintering at 1300 C for 120 min in vacuum when compacted at 1000 MPa. The resulting increment in the sintered density was between 2.0%TD and 4.4%TD. Warm die (200 C) compaction showed no effect on PA Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al powder and only a small effect on PA Ti-6Al-4V powder when compacted at 1000 MPa. However, it was still virtually effective for Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al powder blends made of HDH Ti powder and V-Fe-Al master alloy powder. The observations were compared with literature data and discussed in accordance with the yield strength of Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al and Al 3V as a function of temperature.

The dense TiC-TiB2/Ni composite was successfully fabricated through the pressure-assisted thermal explosion reaction from Ti, B4C and Ni powder blends in air. The ignition temperature (625 degrees C) in air was 415 degrees C lower than that in vacuum. The decreased ignition temperature resulted from a chemical oven mechanism in which the oxidation and nitrification of Ti and the oxidation of B4C released the heat and promoted the occurrence of the thermal explosion reaction. The composites prepared in air and vacuum had similar phase constituents and microstructure. Moreover, the composite prepared in air possessed comparable hardness, flexural strength and fracture toughness to the composite prepared in vacuum.

Single-phase TiC was rapidly synthesized by self-propagation high-temperature synthesis (SHS) reaction of TiH2–C powder blends without preliminary dehydrogenation. TiH2 resulted in lower ignition temperature, finer TiC particles and lower impurity contents than Ti. In addition, the mechanical properties of bulk TiC material made from TiH2–C were significantly improved. These were closely related to dehydrogenation of TiH2 during the ignition of SHS.

The dense TiC–TiB2/Ni composite was successfully fabricated via a simple route where the pressure assisted self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) was directly ignited at 625 °C with the incorporation of air. The ignition temperature in air was much lower than that in vacuum (1040 °C). The composites made in air possessed the similar phase constituents and microstructure as well as comparable mechanical properties to those made in vacuum. The ignition temperature both in air and vacuum showed a significant dependence on Ni content and reactant particle size while the reaction products only showed a dependence on Ni content and B4C particle size, irrespective of Ti particle size. The density of the composite made in air and vacuum only depended on Ni content while the mechanical properties of the composites made in air and vacuum both showed a similar dependence on the Ni content and reactant particle size.

We report that pure microwave (MW) radiation, without the assistance of MW susceptors, can rapidly heat titanium hydride (TiH2) powder to 1300 C for isothermal sintering. The release of hydrogen, however, induces low-temperature plasmas which reflect incident MWs, leading to cyclic temperature fluctuations. Commercially pure titanium fabricated by MW radiation of TiH2 powder exhibits much higher sintered densities, tensile strength and ductility together with finer residual pores, compared to that sintered from hydride-dehydride titanium powder.© 2013 Acta Materialia Inc. A small addition (≤0.5 wt%) of cerium silicide (CeSi 2 ) to powder metallurgy (PM) commercially pure Ti (CP-Ti), Ti–6Al–4V and Ti–10V–2Fe–3Al (all in wt%) results in substantial microstructural refinement and noticeably improved ductility with marginally improved sintered density. CeSi 2 is unstable and decomposes between 1423 K and 1473 K. The Si goes into solid solution in β-Ti and is responsible for the improved sintered density while the Ce scavenges both oxygen (O) and chlorine (Cl) from the Ti powder and therefore improves tensile ductility. The resulting CeO 2 and CeCl x O y particles generally exist along or close to the prior-β grain boundaries. The substantial microstructural refinement in terms of both the prior-β grain size and the subsequent α-Ti lath size is attributed to the grain boundary pinning effect of the CeO 2 particles. The optimum concentration of CeSi 2 is approximately 0.5 wt%, beyond which both the sintered density and tensile elongation drop with increasing addition of CeSi 2 . CeSi 2 can be a practical form of Ce addition to PM Ti alloys for impurity scavenging, microstructural refinement and tensile ductility improvement.

Abstract

The photosynthetic capacity of aquatic and terrestrial colonies of Nostoc flagelliforme was measured in both submerged and emerged states to investigate their response to full hydration and degrees of desiccation. For both colonies, photosynthesis under aquatic conditions was higher than under terrestrial conditions. During the course of immersion, net maximal photosynthesis rate ( P max ) of both types of colonies increased from the beginning of desiccation (fully hydrated), reached highest at water loss of 37–40%, and then decreased with further water loss. Both forms of colonies exhibited a high tolerance to desiccation. Even at 80% water loss they maintained positive CO 2 uptake rates. For every treatment, the submerged colonies had a higher photosynthetic carbon fixation capacity than the terrestrial ones where the photochemical efficiency of colonies only decreased significantly when water loss went beyond 50%. The activity can still be maintained even at a water loss of 82%. Due to its high photosynthetic rate and tolerance of desiccation, the aquatic colony has a great potential as a “seeds” resource for cultivation in terrestrial environments.

A high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) is used to observe the dislocations in ZnMgO pleated nanosheets. The results from room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra indicated that the oxygen deficiency and surface dislocations play a key role in determining the PL properties of the ZnMgO pleated nanosheets.

Abstract

Multidrug resistance (MDR) to chemotherapy is a major obstacle in the treatment of cancer and the resistance process is multifactorial. Studies on multidrug resistance mechanisms relied on the availability of cancer multidrug resistance cell lines that have been established. In this study we successfully established a multidrug resistance cell line MG63/VCR derived from human osteosarcoma cell line MG63 based on the induction by vincristine. MG63/VCR cells exhibited high resistance to vincristine and other anticancer drugs, accompanied by upregulated expression of MDR-associated genes MDR1, MRP1, and Bcl-2. Notably, we found that MG63/VCR cells exhibited higher migration ability compared to parental MG63 cells. Moreover, we demonstrated that LIMK1, a key regulator of actin cytoskeleton, was overexpressed at both mRNA and protein levels in MG63/VCR cells and the higher LIMK1 protein level was correlated with higher level of phosphorylated cofilin. In addition, knockdown of LIMK1 abolished the higher migration ability of MG63/ VCR cells. These results suggest that LIMK1 overexpression contributes to the invasion and metastasis of drug-resistant osteosarcoma and reveal LIMK as a novel therapeutic target for drug resistant osteosarcoma.

Thermodynamic predictions suggest that silicon has the potential to be a potent sintering aid for Ti–Ni alloys because small additions of Si lower the solidus of Ti–Ni alloys appreciably (>200 °C by 1 wt.% Si). A systematic study has been made of the effect of Si on the sintering of a Ti–3Ni alloy at 1300 °C. The sintered density increased from 91.8% theoretical density (TD) to 99.2%TD with increasing Si from 0% to 2%. Microstructural examination reveals that coarse particles and/or continuous networks of Ti5Si3 form along grain boundaries when the addition of Si exceeds 1%. The grain boundary Ti5Si3 phase leads to predominantly intergranular fracture and therefore a sharp decrease in ductility concomitant with increased tensile strengths. The optimum addition of Si is proposed to be ≤1%. Dilatometry experiments reveal different shrinkage behaviours with respect to different Si contents. Interrupted differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments and corresponding X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses clarify the sequence of phase formation during heating. The results provide a useful basis for powder metallurgy (PM) Ti alloy design with Si.

Abstract

A comprehensive study has been made of the sintering and microstructural evolution of Ti–10V–2Fe–3Al compacted from titanium and master alloy powder blends. The densification of Ti–10V–2Fe–3Al at ≤1300 °C occurs by solid-state sintering with apparent activation energy of 163 ± 13 kJ/mol, which falls into the reported activation energy range for the self-diffusion of titanium. The sintered density depends primarily on the titanium powder size while the sintered microstructure and mechanical properties depend mainly on the master alloy type or diffusion of vanadium. The real challenge for the fabrication of Ti–10V–2Fe–3Al by sintering is not densification, which is trivial with relatively fine titanium powder. Rather, it is the realisation of a desired microstructure through master alloy selection or design of the sintering pathway, which determines the distribution of the principal alloying element V, a slow diffuser in β-Ti. This distinguishes it from the sintering of lean alloys, where the focus has predominantly been on densification. The use of 10V–2Fe–3Al master alloy produced more uniform microstructures and therefore much better ductility than the use of 85V–15Al at similar densities.

Reaction behaviors and products of thermal explosion reaction from Ni–Ti–C system under air and Ar atmosphere were investigated, respectively. The ignition temperature for the thermal explosion reaction under air is much lower than that under Ar atmosphere. Under two atmospheres, increasing the Ni content and Ti particle size can increase the ignition temperature, respectively. Under air, increasing Ni and C particle sizes can decrease the ignition temperature, but the opposite results are achieved under Ar atmosphere. The reaction products are mainly dependent on the C particle size under two atmospheres.
