Abstract

Aims Shrub recovery is identified as a major cause of an increase in carbon stocks in terrestrial ecosystems in China, and yet there is a great uncertainty in the contribution of shrubs to the carbon sink. Our objectives were to determine the biomass allocation pattern and carbon density in alpine shrubs. Methods We conducted investigations in 14 shrub communities in eastern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, at 3 500 m above sea level. Plant samples were collected from each plot and measured for biomass in leaves, branches and stems, and roots in laboratory; the data were used to analyze the biomass allocation and carbon density. Important findings The mean biomass was (5.38 ± 3.30) Mg·hm -2 in the shrub layer. There were significant differences in biomass between different shrub types, with the mean of (7.28 ± 4.96) Mg·hm -2 for the broadleaved deciduous shrubs and (4.32 ± 1.36) Mg·hm -2 for the leathery-leaved shrubs. The indicators of individual feature and community structure were significantly correlated with biomass per unit land area. However, these relation- ships were developed based on multiple community structure factors; any single factor alone was insufficient to explain the patterns of biomass variations. The patterns of biomass allocation differed significantly between dif- ferent shrub types. In this study, there was more allocation of photosynthetic products to roots. The mean total community biomass was (6.41 ± 3.86) Mg·hm -2 and the shrub layer accounted for (83.18 ± 8.14)% of the total community biomass. There were significant correlations (p < 0.05) between shrub layer biomass and herb layer biomass, between shrub layer biomass and litter layer biomass, and between shrub layer biomass and the total community biomass. 10. Dual-Polarimetric Brightness Temperature Reconstruction in the FPIR.

Abstract

In order to reduce the reconstruction bias, the improved G matrix model is extended to dual-polarimetric brightness temperature reconstruction in the FPIR so as to obtain the three approaches including the complete one, the intermediate one and the approximated one. Numerical simulations have been conducted. The results show that the reconstructed image in the intermediate approach is much closer to the actual brightness temperature image than the approximated one and the intermediate one is less time consuming and requires less memory than the complete one. They also show that the complete approach can be replaced by the intermediate one at a low cross polarization level. It is demonstrated that the improved G matrix model is effectively applied in the FPIR for obtaining more quickly and accurately dual-polarimetric brightness temperature image. 11. Synthesis and Catalytic Activity of Composite Materials TiO2/Ti-Al-MCM-41 by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

Abstract

TiO2/Ti-Al-MCM-41 (TAM) with high Ti content (Si/Ti=6.2) was prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of TiCl4 on Al-MCM-41 at low reaction temperature (423 K). The sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption/desorption, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (DR UV-vis). The results showed that Ti atoms were in tetrahedral coordinated in the framework of Al-MCM-41. Meanwhile, higher Ti4+ ions coordination and bulk anatase titania was observed in the DR UV-vis spectra. TAM still exhibited hexagonal p6m pore architectures, large specific surface area and narrow pore distribution. Catalytic activity of TAM for polystyrene (PS) pyrolysis has been investigated. The results showed that TAM exhibited high activity for the PS pyrolysis and good selectivity to liquid hydrocarbons of C5-C12 hydrocarbons.

12. [Randomized Controlled Clinical Trials of Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis of Yang-deficiency Pattern by Acupuncture Plus Moxibustion].

Abstract

Objective: To compare the therapeutic effect of acupuncture plus moxibustion and simple acupuncture in the treatment of patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) of yang -deficiency syndrome., Methods: Fifty-eight KOA patients with yang-deficiency syndrome were chosen and randomly divided into acupuncture plus moxibustion group ( n ＝30) and acupuncture group ( n ＝28). Neixiyan (EX-LE 4), Dubi (ST 35), Liangqiu (ST 34), Heding (EX-LE 2), Xuehai (SP 10), Yanglingquan (GB 34) on the affected side of the body were punctured with filiform needles or/and stimulated with moxibustion using seed-sized moxa cones. The treatment was conducted once daily for 10 days, followed with another 10 days after 2 days interval. The pain severity was evaluated by using visual analogue scale (VAS), and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores were used to measure the KOA pain, stiffness and function before and after the treatment, and 1 month after the treatment. The therapeutic effect was also evaluated according to the "Standards for Diagnosis and Therapeutic Effect Evaluation of Diseases/Syndromes of Traditional Chinese Medicine" (issued by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of China in 1994)., Results: Twenty days and 1 month after the treatment, the scores of VAS, and KOA pain, stiffness and motor function of WOMAC were significantly decreased in both groups in comparison with their own pre-treatment ( P <0.01), and were obviously lower in the acupuncture plus moxibustion group than in the acupuncture group ( P <0.05, P <0.01). Of the 28 and 30 cases in the acupuncture and acupuncture plus moxibustion groups, 7 and 12 experienced marked improvement, 12 and 16 were effective, 9 and 2 ineffective, with the therapeutic effect being 67.86% and 93.33%, respectively. The therapeutic effect of acupuncture plus moxibustion was apparently superior to that of simple acupuncture ( P <0.05)., Conclusion: Acupuncture plus moxibustion is significantly superior to simple acupuncture therapy in relieving symptoms of KOA patients, and also has a better post-effect.
