The feedback induced by mesoscale wind stress-SST coupling to the ocean in the western coast of South America was studied using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). To represent the feedback, an empirical mesoscale wind stress perturbation model was constructed from satellite observations, and was incorporated into the ocean model. Comparing two experiments with and without the mesoscale wind stress-SST coupling, it was found that SST in the mesoscale coupling experiment was reduced in the western coast of South America, with the maximum values of 0.5 °C in the Peru Sea and 0.7 °C in the Chile Sea. A mixed layer heat budget analysis indicates that horizontal advection is the main term that explains the reduction in SST. Specifically, the feedback induced by mesoscale wind stress-SST coupling to the ocean can enhance vertical velocity in the nearshore area through the Ekman pumping, which brings subsurface cold water to the sea surface. These results indicate that the feedback due to the mesoscale wind stress-SST coupling to the ocean has the potential for reducing the warm SST bias often seen in the large-scale climate model simulations in this region.

In May 2012, we conducted a hydrographic survey over the Carlsberg Ridge in the northwest Indian Ocean. In this paper, we use these station data, in combination with some free-floating Argo profiles, to obtain the sectional temperature and salinity fields, and subsequently, the hydrographic characteristics are comprehensively analyzed. Through the basic T–S diagram, three salty water masses, Arabian Sea High-Salinity Water, Persian Gulf Water, and Red Sea Water, are identified. The sectional data show a clear ventilation structure associated with Arabian Sea High-Salinity Water. The 35.8 psu salty water sinks at 6.9∘ N and extends southward to 4.4∘ N at depths around the thermocline, where the thermocline depth is in the range of 100 to 150 m. This salty thermocline extends much further south than climatology indicates. Furthermore, the temperature and salinity data are used to compute the absolute geostrophic current over the specific section, and the results show mesoscale eddy vertical structure different from some widely used oceanic reanalysis data. We also find a west-propagating planetary wave at 6∘ N, and the related features are described in terms of phase speed and horizontal and vertical structures.

Interaction between mesoscale perturbations of sea surface temperature (SSTmeso) and wind stress (WSmeso) has great influences on the ocean upwelling system and turbulent mixing in the atmospheric boundary layer. Using daily Quik-SCAT wind speed data and AMSR-E SST data, SSTmeso and WSmeso fields in the western coast of South America are extracted by using a locally weighted regression method (LOESS). The spatial patterns of SSTmeso and WSmeso indicate strong mesoscale SST-wind stress coupling in the region. The coupling coefficient between SSTmeso and WSmeso is about 0.009 5 N/(m2.°C) in winter and 0.008 2 N/(m2.°C) in summer. Based on mesoscale coupling relationships, the mesoscale perturbations of wind stress divergence (Div(WSmeso)) and curl (Curl (WSmeso)) can be obtained from the SST gradient perturbations, which can be further used to derive wind stress vector perturbations using the Tikhonov regularization method. The computational examples are presented in the western coast of South America and the patterns of the reconstructed WSmeso are highly consistent with SSTmeso, but the amplitude can be underestimated significantly. By matching the spatially averaged maximum standard deviations of reconstructed WSmeso magnitude and observations, a reasonable magnitude of WSmeso can be obtained when a rescaling factor of 2.2 is used. As current ocean models forced by prescribed wind cannot adequately capture the mesoscale wind stress response, the empirical wind stress perturbation model developed in this study can be used to take into account the feedback effects of the mesoscale wind stress-SST coupling in ocean modeling. Further applications are discussed for taking into account the feedback effects of the mesoscale coupling in large-scale climate models and the uncoupled ocean models.

Proposals from multiple nations to deploy air–sea flux moorings in the Southern Ocean have raised the question of how to optimize the placement of these moorings in order to maximize their utility, both as contributors to the network of observations assimilated in numerical weather prediction and also as a means to study a broad range of processes driving air–sea fluxes. This study, developed as a contribution to the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS), proposes criteria that can be used to determine mooring siting to obtain best estimates of net air–sea heat flux (Qnet). Flux moorings are envisioned as one component of a multiplatform observing system, providing valuable in situ point time series measurements to be used alongside satellite data and observations from autonomous platforms and ships. Assimilating models (e.g., numerical weather prediction and reanalysis products) then offer the ability to synthesize the observing system and map properties between observations. This paper develops a framework for designing mooring array configurations to maximize the independence and utility of observations. As a test case, within the meridional band from 35° to 65°S we select eight mooring sites optimized to explain the largest fraction of the total variance (and thus to ensure the least variance of residual components) in the area south of 20°S. Results yield different optimal mooring sites for low-frequency interannual heat fluxes compared with higher-frequency subseasonal fluxes. With eight moorings, we could explain a maximum of 24.6% of high-frequency Qnet variability or 44.7% of low-frequency Qnet variability.

This study solves two-dimensional (cross-shelf and depth directions) steady-state nonlinear primitive equations to infer the cross-shelf circulation induced by the Kuroshio shear stress in the East China Sea (ECS). The Kuroshio velocity data are estimated from hydrographic observations at the PN section in the ECS. Nonlinear momentum equations are solved using an iterative approach in a terrain-following coordinate system, which helps to adequately take into account the boundary conditions over complex topography. The vertical shear stress of the Kuroshio is shown to induce two offshore transport pathways over the continental shelf, which are related to the structure of the interior geostrophic current and bottom Ekman transport, respectively. As a result of the vertical shear stress, an upwelling is induced above the bottom Ekman layer on the continental slope. The horizontal shear stress of the Kuroshio has the effect of inducing onshore transport at the flow core. The advection terms in the primitive equations are found to amplify the cross-shelf velocity solved from the linear equations. This study reveals that the Kuroshio has a substantial effect on the cross-shelf circulation and that it might drive multiple transport pathways.

Effect of mesoscale wind stress-SST coupling on the Kuroshio extension jet is studied using the Regional Ocean Modeling System. The mesoscale wind stress perturbation (τMS) is diagnostically determined from modelled mesoscale SST perturbation (SSTMS) by using their empirical relationship derived from corresponding observation. From comparing two experiments with and without the τMS feedback, it is found that the interactively represented τMS-SSTMS coupling can modulate the kinetic energy along the Kuroshio extension jet, with little effect on the Kuroshio pathway. Similar results are also obtained in three additional sensitivity experiments, which consider half strength of the τMS, and the momentum flux and heat flux effect induced by τMS, respectively. That means simply taking into account the τMS-SSTMS coupling has little effect on improving the simulation of the Kuroshio Current system.

Mesoscale perturbations (with a size of 100–1000 km) of wind stress magnitude, divergence and curl in the Kuroshio Extension (KE) are observed to tightly link to those of sea surface temperature (SST), and downwind and crosswind SST gradients, respectively. Based on long-term satellite observational data, their empirical relationships are established, which are further used to represent mesoscale wind stress–SST coupling in an ocean model that is based on the Regional Oceanic Modelling Systems (ROMS). The strength of mesoscale perturbations of wind stress and SST is observed to display a consistent seasonal variability, with the maximum appeared in winter while the minimum appeared in summer. This seasonal variability characteristic is also successfully simulated by ROMS with high resolution. Through comparing two experiments with and without the mesoscale wind stress–SST coupling, it is found that the mesoscale wind stress perturbation (τ MS) has a negative feedback on SST perturbation (SSTMS). Analyses of sensitivity experiments suggest that the τ MS acts to inhibit SSTMS mainly by means of surface heat flux. The τ MS –SSTMS coupling also exerts influences on the ocean mean state and seasonal variability of SST in the KE. The effect of τ MS on the SST is distinct in autumn and winter when the mesoscale perturbations are most active. Analyses of sensitivity experiments demonstrate that the τ MS can affect the long term mean SST through either way of surface heat flux or momentum flux.

The spatio-temporal variability modes of the sea surface height in the South China Sea (SCS-SSH) are obtained using the Cyclostationary Empirical Orthogonal Function (CSEOF) method, and their relationships to the Pacific basin scale oscillations are examined. The first CSEOF mode of the SCS-SSH is a strongly phase-locked annual cycle that is modulated by a slowly varying principal component (PC); the strength of this annual cycle becomes reduced during El Nino events (at largest by 30% off in 1997/98) and enhanced during La Nina events. The second mode is a low frequency oscillation nearly on decadal time scale, with its spatial structure exhibiting an obscure month-dependence; the corresponding PC is highly correlated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) index. Five independent oscillations in the Pacific are isolated by using the independent component (IC) analysis (ICA) method, and their effects on the SCS-SSH are examined. It is revealed that the pure ENSO mode (which resembles the east Pacific ENSO) has little effect on the low frequency variability of the SCS-SSH while the ENSO reddening mode (which resembles the central Pacific ENSO) has clear effect. As the ENSO reddening mode is an important constituent of the PDO, this explains why the PDO is more important than ENSO in modulating the low frequency variability of SCS-SSH. Meridional saddle like oscillation mode, the Kuroshio extension warming mode, and the equatorial cooling mode are also successfully detected by the ICA, but they have little effect on the low frequency variability of the SCS-SSH. Further analyses suggest the Pacific oscillations are probably influencing the variability of the SCS-SSH in ways that are different from that of the sea surface temperature (SST) in the SCS.

As the spatio-temporal variability of the Kuroshio is highly influenced by mesoscale eddies, representing its seasonal variability characteristics requires sufficiently long term observations to reduce the uncertainties. Geostrophic velocity data estimated from hydrographic observation from 1987 to 2010 and the shipboard ADCP velocity data from 1993 to 2008 at the PN Section in the central East China Sea are collected to view the seasonal variability objectively. From both types of observation, it is found that the seasonal climatology mean of the Kuroshio Current exhibits significant difference in three areas, which are located at the Kuroshio Current core and its two flanks in a shallow layer less than 300 m, with the weakest northeast current at the core in autumn, the strongest counter current on the right flank in spring, and the strongest northeast current on the left flank in autumn, respectively. The seasonal variance of the Kuroshio Current also exhibits significant difference on the offshore side of the Kuroshio, with larger variance in spring and summer while smaller variance in autumn and winter. For the current parallel to the PN Section, the ratio of the seasonal variability component to the intraseasonal variability component is relatively smaller than that for the current perpendicular to the PN Section. Further analyses indicate that the seasonal variability at the PN Section is tightly linked to the upstream and downstream current variability.

The temporal and spatial variability of the Kuroshio Current was analyzed. Current data were estimated from hydrographic data collected from areas within the central East China Sea (PN section) from 1955 to 2010 and the Tokara Strait (TK section) from 1987 to 2010. To reduce the bias caused by cruise-dependent spatial resolution among the data, grid-consistent temperature and salinity fields were reconstructed by use of a regression relationship to account for anomalies between observed stations and grid points. The mass imbalance problem between the PN and TK sections, which appears stochastically when viewed by use of the dynamic method, was solved by use of the inverse method. The estimated Kuroshio volume transport (KVT) was found to be closely consistent with that of current observations and had an uncertainty of 2.4 Sv. The KVT seemed to have neither a regime shift in approximately 1976 nor a sharply increasing trend. The KVT was dominated by 2–5 year modulating interannual variability with an amplitude of 2.8 Sv, followed by weak 20-year decadal variability with an amplitude of 0.33 Sv. Empirical orthogonal function analysis of the currents suggested that the temporal and spatial variability of the Kuroshio Current in the PN section was dominated by a transport mode, manifested by the high variability of current on the seaward side of current core with expansion or shrinkage of the core. In contrast, the temporal and spatial variability of the Kuroshio Current in the TK section was dominated by a meandering mode, as indicated by the migration of the Kuroshio axis in the south gap of the Tokara Strait.
