Abstract

BACKGROUND: Dysbiosis of the oral mycobiome has been linked to some diseases, including cancers. However, the role of oral fungal communities in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) carcinogenesis has not previously been investigated. METHODS: We characterized the oral salivary fungal mycobiome in 476 untreated incident NPC patients and 537 population-based controls using fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-2 sequencing. The relationship between oral fungal mycobiome and the risk of NPC was assessed through bioinformatic and biostatistical analyses. FINDINGS: We found that lower fungal alpha diversity was associated with an increased odds of NPC [lower vs. higher: observed features (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 5.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 3.60-9.38); Simpson diversity (1.53, 1.03-2.29); Shannon diversity (2.03, 1.35-3.04)]. Abstract

Thouless pump is a one-dimensional dynamic topological effect that stems from the same topological mechanism as the renowned two-dimensional Chern insulators, with one momentum dimension replaced by a time variant evolution parameter. The underlying physics is abelian, concerning topologies of individual bands. By introducing multi-band non-abelian topology into pumping, much richer physics is expected that goes beyond the abelian counterpart. Here we report the observation of a non-abelian Thouless pump in an acoustic waveguide array with judiciously engineered coupling configurations. The observed non-abelian effect originates from time-evolution of eigen-states in Z_3 pump cycles that traverse across several band degeneracies in the parameter space in a three-band system. Interestingly, the pump of the eigenstates exhibits non-commutativity, i.e. the final state depends critically on the order of the pumping paths. Abstract

BackgroundHelicobacter pylori is the most important risk factor for non-cardia gastric cancer (NCGC); however, the magnitude of the association varies across epidemiological studies. This study aimed to quantify the association between H. pylori infection and NCGC, using different criteria to define infection status.MethodsA pooled analysis of individual-level H. pylori serology data from eight international studies (1325 NCGC and 3121 controls) from the Stomach Cancer Pooling (StoP) Consortium was performed. Cases and controls with a negative H. pylori infection status were reclassified as positive considering the presence of anti-Cag A antibodies, gastric atrophy, or advanced stage at diagnosis, as available and applicable. A two-stage approach was used to pool study-specific adjusted odds ratios (OR), and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). A meta-analysis of published prospective studies assessing H. pylori seropositivity in NCGCs was conducted.ResultsThe OR for the association between serology-defined H. pylori and NCGC was 1.45 (95% CI: 0.87-2.42), which increased to 4.79 (95% CI: 2.39-9.60) following the reclassification of negative H. pylori infection. The results were consistent across strata of sociodemographic characteristics, clinical features and lifestyle factors, though significant differences were observed according to geographic region-a stronger association in Asian studies. The pooled risk estimates from the literature were 3.01 (95% CI: 2.22-4.07) for ELISA or EIA and 9.22 (95% CI: 3.12-27.21) for immunoblot or multiplex serology.ConclusionThe NCGC risk estimate from StoP based on the reclassification of H. pylori seronegative individuals is consistent with the risk estimates obtained from the literature. Our classification algorithm may be useful for future studies.

Abstract

Although there is a clear relationship between family history (FH) and the risk of gastric cancer (GC), quantification is still needed in relation to different histological types and anatomical sites, and in strata of covariates. The objective was to analyze the risk of GC according to first-degree FH in a uniquely large epidemiological consortium of GC. This investigation includes 5946 cases and 12,776 controls from 17 studies of the Stomach Cancer Pooling (StoP) Project consortium. Summary odds ratios (OR) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by pooling study-specific ORs using fixed-effect model meta-analysis techniques. Stratified analyses were carried out by sex, age, tumor location and histological type, smoking habit, socioeconomic status, alcohol intake and fruit consumption. The pooled OR for GC was 1.84 (95% CI: 1.64-2.04; I2 = 6.1%, P heterogeneity = 0.383) in subjects with vs. those without first-degree relatives with GC. No significant differences were observed among subgroups of sex, age, geographic area or study period. Associations tended to be stronger for non-cardia (OR = 1.82; 95% CI: 1.59-2.05 for subjects with FH) than for cardia GC (OR = 1.38; 95% CI: 0.98-1.77), and for the intestinal (OR = 1.92; 95% CI: 1.62-2.23) than for the diffuse histotype (OR = 1.62; 95% CI: 1.28-1.96). This analysis confirms the effect of FH on the risk of GC, reporting an approximately doubled risk, and provides further quantification of the risk of GC according to the subsite and histotype. Considering these findings, accounting for the presence of FH to carry out correct prevention and diagnosis measures is of the utmost importance.

39. Singular points of polarizations in the momentum space of photonic crystal slabs

Abstract

Bound states in the continuum (BICs), circularly polarized states (C points) and degenerate states are all of three types of singular points of polarization in the momentum space. For photonic crystal slabs (PhCSs) with linearly polarized far fields, BICs were found to be the centers of polarization vortices and attracted more attention in the previous studies. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that the far fields of PhCSs can exhibit remarkably diverse polarizations due to the robust existences of C points in the continuum. Only a pair of C points with identical handedness and opposite topological charge can be annihilated together. Continuously fine tuning of the structure parameters of PhCSs without breaking their symmetry, a pair of C points with identical topological charge and opposite handedness are able to merge into a BIC, then the BIC splits into C points again. Interestingly, a Dirac-degenerate BIC with one half of topological charge is observed when two pairs of C points with identical topological charge from the upper and lower band, respectively, simultaneously merge at the Dirac-degenerate point. The law of topological charge conservation is verified to play an important role in the evolutions and interconversions between different types of polarization singularities. 49. Polarization diversity close to the optical bound states in the continuum

Abstract

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) realized in two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal slabs (PhCSs) have attracted considerable attentions, owing to the advantages in the fabrications and on-chip applications. The polarization vortex centered at BICs in the momentum space displayed by the linear polarization vectors of far-field radiation is a striking property of BICs. Here, by constructing BICs at K point in photonic graphenes, we theoretically demonstrate that the far-field polarization states close to BICs can exhibit remarkable polarization diversity. Interestingly, C-points (circular polarizations) close to BIC at K point are observed. Thus, we propose that, along a closed loop enclosing BICs in the momentum space, the trajectory of the far-field polarization states on the shell of the Poincare sphere could provide a general and straightforward means to characterize the topological natures of BICs. The topological charge carried by the BIC can be defined by the half of the winding number of the trajectory around the S3 axis, which is an integer and half integer for the non-degenerate and double-degenerate BICs at K point, respectively. Our findings could open a gateway towards the applications of BICs in lasers with full polarizations and the generation and manipulation of vector beams of light., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Early detection has the potential to reduce cancer mortality, but an effective screening test must demonstrate asymptomatic cancer detection years before conventional diagnosis in a longitudinal study. In the Taizhou Longitudinal Study (TZL), 123,115 healthy subjects provided plasma samples for long-term storage and were then monitored for cancer occurrence. Here we report the preliminary results of PanSeer, a noninvasive blood test based on circulating tumor DNA methylation, on TZL plasma samples from 605 asymptomatic individuals, 191 of whom were later diagnosed with stomach, esophageal, colorectal, lung or liver cancer within four years of blood draw. We also assay plasma samples from an additional 223 cancer patients, plus 200 primary tumor and normal tissues. We show that PanSeer detects five common types of cancer in 88% (95% CI: 80-93%) of post-diagnosis patients with a specificity of 96% (95% CI: 93-98%), We also demonstrate that PanSeer detects cancer in 95% (95% CI: 89-98%) of asymptomatic individuals who were later diagnosed, though future longitudinal studies are required to confirm this result. These results demonstrate that cancer can be non-invasively detected up to four years before current standard of care.
