Two novel coordination polymers (where Cu for the complex 1 and the Co for the complex 2) with distinct transition metal ions containing 4-(3,5-dicarboxylphenyl)-2-methylpyridine (H2L), the pyridyl-dicarboxylic acid ligand, have been produced under the solvothermal reaction conditions, and the two compounds’ performances and architectures were also characterized. The chemical formulae determined of two complexes are respectively [Cu(L)(H2O)]·H2O (1) and [Co3(L)2Cl2(H2O)2]·2H2O (2). Complex 1 exhibits a 2D network with a (3,6)-connected kgd topology based on the dinuclear [Cu2O2] units. In complex 2, the linear trinuclear [Co3(μ-Ocarboxylate)2(COO)2Cl2] units with mixed carboxylate and μ-Cl triple bridges are cross-linked by the L ligands into a 3D framework with a (3,6)-connected rtl topology. The complexes’ magnetic performances reflected that between consecutive metal ions, there exists the antiferromagnetic coupling. Their treatment activities on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) via focused high-intensity ultrasound were evaluated. Firstly, the Annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate/propidium iodide staining was implemented for the assessment of the apoptotic neurons percentage after compounds treatment. Next, the Aβ accumulation in the neurons was also detected via employing the western blotting assay.

We present the bounds on 3+1 active-sterile neutrino mixing obtained from the first results of the KATRIN experiment. We show that the KATRIN data extend the Mainz and Troitsk bound to smaller values of $\Delta{m}^2_{41}$ for large mixing and improves the exclusion of the large-$\Delta{m}^2_{41}$ solution of the Huber-Muller reactor antineutrino anomaly. We also show that the combined bound of the Mainz, Troitsk, and KATRIN tritium experiments and the Bugey-3, NEOS, PROSPECT, and DANSS reactor spectral ratio measurements exclude most of the region in the ($\sin^2\!2\vartheta_{ee},\Delta{m}^2_{41}$) plane allowed by the Huber-Muller reactor antineutrino anomaly. Considering two new calculations of the reactor neutrino fluxes, we show that one, that predicts a lower $^{235}\text{U}$ neutrino flux, is in agreement with the tritium and reactor spectral ratio measurements, whereas the other leads to a larger tension than the Huber-Muller prediction. We also show that the combined reactor spectral ratio and tritium measurements disfavor the Neutrino-4 indication of large active-sterile mixing. Objective: This report was designed to assess the functional role of miR-218/dachshund family transcription factor 1 (DACH1) in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and investigate its possible molecular mechanism. Materials and Methods: From the GEO database, we downloaded different datasets for analyzing the expression of miR-218 and DACH1 in DKD. TargetScan was adopted to predict the binding sites between miR-218 and DACH1, which was further verified by dual-luciferase reporter assays. The renal proximal tubule cells (HK-2) treated with high glucose (HG) were used as an in vitro model. QRT-PCR and western blot were used to determine the expression of DACH1 and other relative factors. Cell counting kit-8 and flow cytometer were applied to detect cell viability and apoptosis. The levels of inflammatory cytokines were determined by an ELISA assay. Results: A prominent raise of miR-218 was observed in DKD through bioinformatics analysis, which was further confirmed in the HG-induced model. DACH1 is a target of miR-218. miR-218 reduced cell viability and induced apoptosis by negatively regulating DACH1. Moreover, upregulating miR-218 in HG models increased the concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1β, reduced the level of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, and promoted the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process, which is possibly achieved by targeting DACH1. While downregulating miR-218 showed the opposite results. Conclusion: These data demonstrated that, under an in vitro HG environment, miR-218 suppressed the HK-2 cells proliferation, promoted apoptosis, caused an inflammatory response, and facilitated the EMT process largely by targeting DACH1, providing an insight into the therapeutic intervention of DKD.

Background Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most rapid and effective treatment for patients with depression, ECT can achieve remarkable antidepressant effects in the initial 3–4 sessions, but significant side effects limit its use. However, recent low-charge electrotherapy (LCE) studies have demonstrated antidepressant or antipsychotic effects with significantly fewer side effects. The aim of this study is to propose a novel two-step charge set strategy for ECT treatment, referred to as Hybrid-ECT, to decrease side effects by using a low charge while preserving treatment efficacy. Methods/design A randomized, double-blinded, standard-controlled, parallel-group design will be carried out. We plan to enroll 112 inpatients diagnosed with depression (unipolar or bipolar) and randomly assign them to conventional ECT (control group) or to Hybrid-ECT (treatment group, 3 ECT sessions followed by LCE sessions (approximately 2.8 joules per session)). We will evaluate participants across a wide variety of domains including clinical symptoms, cognitive, psychological and functional metrics. We will also perform magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and event-related potential (ERPs) assessments during treatment to explore brain function differences between ECT and LCE. Discussion This research proposes a simple but completely novel ECT strategy that aims to rapidly relieve depressive symptoms and minimize side effects. Background: This study investigated the clinicopathological characteristics and factors influencing the recurrence of pelvic endodermal sinus tumor. Methods: Fifty-four cases were retrospectively analyzed from at the Zhejiang Cancer Hospital. Imaging and serological indicators were used to determine whether disease recurred, to evaluate progression-free survival, and to compare the influence of related factors on disease recurrence. SPSS 19.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Statistical significance was defined as p < 0.05. Results: The median age at initial treatment was 21 years (range, 11–52 years). Six patients had extragonadal endodermal sinus tumor, and four had histological features of endodermal sinus tumor combined with embryonal carcinoma. Thirty-nine patients underwent fertility-preserving surgery, 18 patients had a childbearing history, and eight patients had residual tumor after initial treatment. Twenty-six patients had a tumor diameter of more than 15 cm, and 30 patients had a serum α‑fetoprotein level greater than 10,000 ng/mL before initial management. The median follow-up time was 47.5 months (range, 14–212 months). During follow-up, 15 patients experience recurrence, with a recurrence rate of 27.8% and a 5-year PFS rate of 61.1%. In univariate analysis, the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage (stage III-IV VS. I-II; HR= 10.054 pConclusions: Stage is a prognostic factor for recurrence of pelvic endodermal sinus tumor. The first surgery should remove the tumor as completely as possible, and initial treatment should require a sufficient dose and full course of platinum-based chemotherapy, which may reduce the recurrence rate. Patients with endodermal sinus tumor and embryonal carcinoma may have increased susceptibility of recurrence.

Primordial black holes (PBHs) from the early Universe constitute an attractive dark matter candidate. First detections of black hole-neutron star (BH-NS) candidate gravitational wave events by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration, GW200105 and GW200115, already prompted speculations about non-astrophysical origin. We analyze, for the first time, the total volumetric merger rates of PBH-NS binaries formed via two-body gravitational scattering, finding them to be subdominant to the astrophysical BH-NS rates. In contrast to binary black holes, a significant fraction of which can be of primordial origin, either formed in dark matter halos or in the early Universe, PBH-NS rates cannot be significantly enhanced by contributions preceding star formation. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a user-friendly suicide attempt risk nomogram in depression, supporting timely interventions by clinicians. We collected clinical data of 273 depressed patients from January 2020 to January 2021. Suicide attempt was assessed conducting the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. First, optimized features were filtrated through the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression analysis. Subsequently, we selected variables with nonzero coefficients and entered them into multiple logistic regression model and nomogram function to construct a visual predicting suicide attempt model. Additionally, the C-index, calibration plot and decision curve analysis, were applied to assess discrimination, calibration, and clinical practicability. Finally, the bootstrapping validation was applied to assess internal validation. Finally, eleven clinical features are screened out in the prediction nomogram. The model presented tiptop calibration and pleasant discrimination with a C-index of 0.853. A towering C-index value, up to 0.799, could also be attained in the interval validation analysis. In addition, decision curve analysis exhibited that our predictive model is clinically effective when the threshold is no less than 1%. These results demonstrate this predictive model was helpful for clinicians assessing the inpatient's suicide attempt recently and implementing individualized treatment strategies.

Background To probe the differences of gut microbiota among major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder with current major depressive episode (BPD) and health participants. Methods Thirty one MDD patients, thirty BPD patients, and thirty healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. All the faecal samples were analyzed by shotgun metagenomics sequencing. Except for routine analyses of alpha diversity, we specially designed a new indicator, the Gm coefficient, to evaluate the inequality of relative abundances of microbiota for each participant. Results The Gm coefficients are significant decreased in both MDD and BPD groups. The relative abundances of increased phyla Firmicutes and Actinobacteria and decreased Bacteroidetes were significantly in the MDD and BPD groups. At genus level, four of top five enriched genera (Bacteroides, Clostridium, Bifidobacterium, Oscillibacter and Streptococcus) were found increased significantly in the MDD and BPD groups compared with HCs. The genera Escherichia and Klebsiella showed significant changes in abundances only between the BPD and HC groups. At the species level, compared with BPD patients, MDD patients had a higher abundance of Prevotellaceae including Prevotella denticola F0289, Prevotella intermedia 17, Prevotella ruminicola, and Prevotella intermedia. Furthermore, the abundance of Fusobacteriaceae, Escherichia blattae DSM 4481 and Klebsiella oxytoca were significantly increased, whereas the Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis ATCC 15697 = JCM 1222 was significantly reduced in BPD group compared with MDD group. Conclusions Our study suggested that gut microbiota may be involved in the pathogenesis of both MDD and BPD patients, and the nuances of bacteria may have the potentiality of being the biomarkers of MDD and BPD.

Ovarian cancer is one of the most common cancers in women and is often diagnosed as advanced stage because of the subtle symptoms of early ovarian cancer. To identify the somatic alterations and new biomarkers for the diagnosis and targeted therapy of Chinese ovarian cancer patients, a total of 65 Chinese ovarian cancer patients were enrolled for detection of genomic alterations. The most commonly mutated genes in ovarian cancers were TP53 (86.15%, 56/65), NF1 (13.85%, 9/65), NOTCH3 (10.77%, 7/65), and TERT (10.77%, 7/65). Statistical analysis showed that TP53 and LRP1B mutations were associated with the age of patients, KRAS, TP53, and PTEN mutations were significantly associated with tumor differentiation, and MED12, LRP2, PIK3R2, CCNE1, and LRP1B mutations were significantly associated with high tumor mutational burden. The mutation frequencies of LRP2 and NTRK3 in metastatic ovarian cancers were higher than those in primary tumors, but the difference was not significant (P = 0.072, for both). Molecular characteristics of three patients responding to olapanib supported that BRCA mutation and HRD related mutations is the target of olaparib in platinum sensitive patients. In conclusion we identified the somatic alterations and suggested a group of potential biomarkers for Chinese ovarian cancer patients. Our study provided a basis for further exploration of diagnosis and molecular targeted therapy for Chinese ovarian cancer patients.

Background and aims C-X-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 6 (CXCL6) is an important chemokine. We attempt in this investigation to explore its role and possible mechanism in diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Methods By intergrating GEO data, CXCL6 expression in DKD patients and normal controls was exhibited. miRWalk website and luciferase reporter assay were used to predict and verify the upstream miRNA of CXCL6. CCK-8 assay and flow cytometry were performed to detect proliferation and apoptosis capacities. The levels of inflammatory key factors (TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8) were measured using ELISA analysis. Expression of CXCL6, miR-20a, and JAK/STAT3 pathway-related markers were detected by qRT-PCR or western blot assays. Results CXCL6 was increased in DKD. miR-20a was identified as an upstream regulatory miRNA of CXCL6, and its expression was decreased in DKD and HG-treated HK-2 cells. miR-20a overexpression facilitated the proliferation of HG-treated HK-2 cells, whereas miR-20a depletion exhibited the opposite phenomenon. The levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 were increased by HG treatment in HK-2 cells. CXCL6 antagonized the promoting impacts of miR-20a mimics on HG-exposed HK-2 cell proliferation. The suppressive effect of miR-20a overexpression on apoptosis and inflammatory response of HG-induced HK-2 cell was rescued by CXCL6 enhancement. The protein expression of p-JAK and p-STAT3 were reduced by miR-20a mimic while facilitated by CXCL6 overexpression in HG-stimulated HK-2 cells. Conclusion These consequences hinted that miR-20a might exert a repressive impact on DKD, possibly through targeting CXCL6 and mediating JAK/STAT3 pathway, which offer new targets for DKD treatment.

Background The microbiome-gut-brain axis, especially the microbial tryptophan biosynthesis and metabolism pathway (MiTBamp), is closely connected to bipolar disorder with current major depressive episode (BPD). Methods We performed shotgun metagenomics sequencing (SMS) of faecal samples from 25 BPD patients and 28 healthy controls (HCs). Except for the microbiota taxa and MiTBamp analyses, we also built a classification model using the Random Forests (RF) and Boruta algorithm to find the microbial biomarkers for BPD. Results Compared to HCs, the phylum Bacteroidetes abundance was significantly reduced, whereas that of the Actinobacteria and Firmicutes were significantly increased in BPD patients. We also identified 38 species increased and 6 species decreased significantly in the BPD group. In the MiTBamp, we identified that two Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) orthologies (KOs) (K00658 and K00837) were significantly lower in the BPD, and five KOs (K01696, K00382, K00626, K01667, and K03781) were significantly higher in the BPD group. We also identified significant genera and species which were closely related to these KOs. Finally, RF classification based on gut microbiota at the genus level can achieve an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.997. Limitations The features of cross-sectional design, limited sample size, the heterogeneity of bipolar disorders, and a lack of serum/plasma tryptophan concentration measurements. Conclusions The present findings enable a better understanding of changes in gastrointestinal microbiome and MiTBamp in BPD. Alterations of microbes may have potential as biomarkers for distinguishing the BPD patients form HCs.

BackgroundThe microbiota–gut–brain axis, especially the microbial tryptophan (Trp) biosynthesis and metabolism pathway (MiTBamp), may play a critical role in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, studies on the MiTBamp in MDD are lacking. The aim of the present study was to analyze the gut microbiota composition and the MiTBamp in MDD patients.MethodsWe performed shotgun metagenomic sequencing of stool samples from 26 MDD patients and 29 healthy controls (HCs). In addition to the microbiota community and the MiTBamp analyses, we also built a classification based on the Random Forests (RF) and Boruta algorithm to identify the gut microbiota as biomarkers for MDD.ResultsThe Bacteroidetes abundance was strongly reduced whereas that of Actinobacteria was significantly increased in the MDD patients compared with the abundance in the HCs. Most noteworthy, the MDD patients had increased levels of Bifidobacterium, which is commonly used as a probiotic. Four Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) orthologies (KOs) (K01817, K11358, K01626, K01667) abundances in the MiTBamp were significantly lower in the MDD group. Furthermore, we found a negative correlation between the K01626 abundance and the HAMD scores in the MDD group. Finally, RF classification at the genus level can achieve an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.890.ConclusionsThe present findings enabled a better understanding of the changes in gut microbiota and the related Trp pathway in MDD. Alterations of the gut microbiota may have the potential as biomarkers for distinguishing MDD patients form HCs.

LncRNAs play a vital role in alternative splicing of target genes. However, the mechanisms underlying lncRNAs involvement in splicing are poorly understood. In the present study, we identified a previously uncharacterized lncRNA, which is denoted as TPM1-AS, is reverse-transcribed from the fourth intronic region of the tropomyosin I (TPM1). In situ hybridization and RNA immunoprecipitation assays demonstrated that TPM1-AS was located in the nucleus and interacted with RNA-binding motif protein 4 (RBM4) in human esophageal cancer cells. TPM1-AS overexpression or RBM4 knockdown decreased endogenous exon 2a expression of TPM1, resulting in specifically down-regulation of TPM1variant V2 and V7 in human esophageal cancer cells. Mechanismly, the interaction of TPM1-AS with RBM4 hindered binding of RBM4 to TPM1 pre-mRNA and inhibited RBM4 to promote endogenous exon 2a inclusion of TPM1. Importantly, overexpression of TPM1-AS inhibited migration and filopodium formation, whereas TPM1variant V2 and V7 promoted these behaviors of human esophageal cancer cells. Taken together, the results suggest that a natural antisense TPM1-AS regulates the alternative splicing of TPM1 through an interaction with RBM4 and involves in TPM1-mediated filopodium formation and migration of cancer cells.

Aim: To investigate the expression of long intergenic noncoding RNA 00515 (LINC00515) in high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) and its potential correlation with platinum resistance. Patients & methods: Expression of LINC00515 in HGSOC (n = 115) and normal (n = 19) tissues was detected via quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). We further explored the statistical significance of the relationship between LINC00515 expression and platinum resistance in HGSOC. Results: LINC00515 was gradually downregulated in the order of normal > platinum-sensitive > platinum-resistant tissue (p < 0.05). Results demonstrated that LINC00515 downregulation was correlated with platinum resistance and relapse-free survival (RFS) of HGSOC (p < 0.05). Conclusion: LINC00515 downregulation is correlated with HGSOC development, platinum resistance and RFS, supporting its utility as a potential biomarker to predict platinum resistance and prognosis of RFS.

We study the primordial tensor perturbation produced from the double inflationary scenario with an intermediate break stage. Because of the transitions, the power spectrum deviates from the vacuum one and there will appear oscillatory behavior. In the case of a scalar-type curvature perturbation, it is known that the amplitude of these oscillations may be enhanced to result in the power spectrum larger than the one for the vacuum case. One might expect the similar enhancement for the tensor perturbation as well. Unfortunately, it is found that when the equation of state (EOS) parameter $w=p/��$ of the break stage is a constant with $w>-1/3$, the amplitude of oscillations is never large enough to enhance the power spectrum. On the contrary, the power spectrum is found to be suppressed even on those scales that leave the horizon at the first inflationary stage and remain superhorizon throughout the entire stage. We identify the cause of this suppression with the correction terms in additional to the leading order constant solution on superhorizon scales. We argue that our result is general in the sense that any intermediate break stage during inflation cannot yield an enhancement of the tensor spectrum as long as the Hubble expansion rate is non-increasing in time., 20 pages, 4 figures, Latex (version 2: one paragraph added in the conclusion section and two references added)

Background Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a behavioral disorder that mainly refers to a recurrent pattern of disobedient, defiant, negativistic and hostile behaviors toward authority figures. Previous studies have showed associations of serotonin transporter (5-HTT) and monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) with behavioral and psychiatric disorders. The purposes of this study were to investigate the potential association of 5-HTT gene promoter polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) and MAOA gene polymorphism with susceptibility to ODD in a Han Chinese school population. Methods The 5-HTTLPR gene polymorphism and the MAOA gene polymorphism were genotyped in a case–control study of 257 Han Chinese children (123 ODD and 134 healthy controls). Results There was significant difference in the allele distribution of 5-HTTLPR (χ2 = 7.849, P = 0.005) between the ODD and control groups. Further, there were significant differences in genotype (χ2 = 5.168, P = 0.023) and allele distributions (χ2 = 10.336, P = 0.001) of the MAOA gene polymorphism that is variable-number tandem repeat (MAOA-uVNTR) between two groups. Moreover, there were significant differences in genotype (χ2 = 4.624, P = 0.032) and allele distributions (χ2 = 9.248, P = 0.002) of MAOA-uVNTR only in the male ODD and healthy groups. Conclusions Our results suggest that 5-HTTLPR and MAOA-uVNTR gene variants may contribute to susceptibility to ODD. Further, MAOA-uVNTR gene polymorphism may play a role in susceptibility to ODD only in male children.

We study a model of inflation in which a scalar field $\chi$ is non-minimally coupled to Starobinsky's $R^2$ gravity. After transforming it to the Einstein frame, a new scalar field, the scalaron $\phi$, will appear and couple to $\chi$ with a nontrivial field metric, while $\chi$ acquires a positive mass via the non-minimal coupling. Initially inflation occurs along the $\phi$ direction with $\chi$ trapped near its origin by this induced mass. After $\phi$ crosses a critical value, it starts rolling down rapidly and proceeds todamped oscillations around an effective local minimum determined by the value of $\chi$, while inflation still continues, driven by the $\chi$ field at this second stage where the effect of the non-minimal coupling becomes negligible. The presence of the damped oscillations during the transition from the first to second stage of inflation causes enhancement and oscillation features in the power spectrum of the curvature perturbation. Assuming that the oscillations may be treated perturbatively, we calculate these features by using the $\delta N$ formalism, and discuss its observational implications to large scale CMB anomalies or primordial black hole formation, depending on the scale of the features., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, published version

Both the gene expression and activity of water channel protein can control transmembrane water movement. We have reported the overexpression of CaTIP1-1, which caused a decrease in chilling tolerance in transgenic plants by increasing the size of the stomatal pore. CaTIP1-1 expression was strongly induced by salt and mannitol stresses in pepper (Capsicum annuum). However, its biochemical and physiological functions are still unknown in transgenic tobacco. In this study, transient expression of CaTIP1-1-GFP in tobacco suspension cells revealed that the protein was localized in the tonoplast. CaTIP1-1 overexpressed in radicle exhibited vigorous growth under high salt and mannitol treatments more than wild-type plants. The overexpression of CaTIP1-1 pepper gene in tobacco enhanced the antioxidant enzyme activities and increased transcription levels of reactive oxygen species-related gene expression under osmotic stresses. Moreover, the viability of transgenic tobacco cells was higher than the wild-type after exposure to stress. The pepper plants with silenced CaTIP1-1 in P70 decreased tolerance to salt and osmotic stresses using the detached leaf method. We concluded that the CaTIP1-1 gene plays an important role in response to osmotic stresses in tobacco.

This study was conducted to determine the prognostic value of serum α-fetoprotein (AFP) levels in patients with ovarian yolk sac tumor (OYST). We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the associations between serum AFP level and prognosis in OYST. A total of 12 quantitative studies met the inclusion criteria. Preoperative AFP was not found to be associated with overall survival (OS) [odds ratio (OR)=0.84, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.43–1.62] in OYST. However, a high postoperative AFP level was associated with worse OS (OR=0.16, 95% CI: 0.05–0.48) and relapse-free survival (RFS) (OR=0.18, 95% CI: 0.08–0.43) compared to a low postoperative AFP level in patients with OYST. In addition, a postoperative AFP level of >1,000 ng/ml was associated with a decrease in OS (OR=0.16, 95% CI: 0.05–0.50) and RFS (OR=0.21, 95% CI: 0.08–0.57). In conclusion, the postoperative, but not the preoperative, AFP level was found to be a prognostic factor in patients with OYST. In particular, a postoperative AFP level of >1,000 ng/ml was an indicator of poor prognosis in patients with OYST.

Wind turbine system (WTS) is a representative distributed power generation (DG). Establishment of WTS model and control strategies is of important practical significance. One critical field is the research of inverter system. It should be operated in stand-alone (SA) or grid-connected (GC) mode. The purpose of this thesis is to establish simulation platform of WTS inverter control model in Matlab/Simulink environment, which includes two typical DG control strategies, PQ and V/f. The wind fluctuation makes inverter output power harder to follow wind turbine (WT) power. In GC mode, PQ strategy was adopted to balance inverter output power and WT generated power. In SA mode, V/f strategy was applied to keep emergency load voltage stable. The bidirectional smooth transitions between SA and GC mode were well accomplished. Simulation proves the model can survive grid failures or load shedding. The study can be used in research of DG operation control.

Ubiquitous cell membrane proteins called aquaporins are members of major intrinsic proteins (MIPs), which control the specific transport of water molecules across cell membranes. A pepper aquaporin gene (CaAQP), which exhibits the structural features of tonoplast intrinsic proteins of the MIP subfamily, was isolated from the leaves of chilling-treated seedlings of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cv. P70. Assays indicated high levels of expression in young seeds, green fruits and flower buds and low levels of expression in the stems, leaves and roots of pepper. The expression patterns were strongly and rapidly induced by HgCl2, low temperature, abscisic acid, fluridone and osmotic stresses. The responsiveness of pepper seedlings pretreated with abscisic acid at low temperatures demonstrated up-regulation of CaAQP by chilling, which is potentially involved in ABA signalling. Our results indicated that overexpression of CaAQP decreased chilling stress in transgenic plants, likely by increasing the stomatal aperture under stress, increasing the rate of membrane damage during the recovery stage, thereby affecting the intercellular CO2 concentration with lower stomatal conductance and transpiration rates. VIGS of CaAQP in pepper plants caused significant growth retardation. These results suggested that CaAQP played a crucial role in the plant response to abiotic stresses.

The mu-opioid receptor (MOR), a membrane-bound G protein-coupled receptor, is the main target for opioids in the nervous system. MOR1 has been found in several types of cancer cells and reported to be involved in tumor progression and metastasis. However, the expression and clinical significance of MOR1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remain unclear. In our study, the expression of MOR1 was confirmed in ESCC cell lines (KYSE180, KYSE150, and EC109) by Western blot. MOR1 was also detected on tissue microarrays of ESCC samples in 239 cases using immunohistochemical staining. We found that MOR1 was mainly located in the cytoplasm and occasionally occurred in the membrane or nucleus of ESCC cells. Moreover, results indicated that MOR1 expression in the cytoplasm was associated with lymph node metastasis (R = 0.164, P = 0.008, Kendall's tau-b-test). No more associations were found between MOR1 expression status and other clinical parameters. However, no statistical significant differences were found between MOR1 expression in the cytoplasm, nucleus/membrane, and the overall survival of ESCC patients (P = 0.848; P = 0.167; P = 0.428, respectively, log-rank test). Our results suggest that the cytoplasmic MOR1 may be a high-risk factor for lymph node metastasis of ESCC patients. We also hypothesize that MOR1 agonists used in ESCC patients should be prudent, and opioid receptor antagonists may be novel therapeutic drugs for ESCC patients.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate patient characteristics and findings after mammary ductoscopy in an effort to reduce the pain experienced during the procedure. Patients and Methods: We evaluated outpatients in whom mammary ductoscopy was performed under local or intraductal anesthesia without preference, and their clinical characteristics and findings were recorded. Average and maximum pain scores were determined after the examination for statistical analysis. Results: The overall average pain score was 3.74 ± 1.353, and the maximum pain score was 6.40 ± 1.681. The type of anesthesia, total operation time, nipple retraction, and discharge status significantly correlated with the pain score. Intraductal anesthesia lowered the average pain score by 0.60, whereas a total procedure time greater than 12 min increased the average pain score by 0.956. The pain score decreased if patients had nipple retraction, and intraductal anesthesia proved suitable for patients with normal nipples. Conclusion: Intraductal anesthesia is suitable for most patients, and ductoscopy should not exceed 12 min to minimize the pain. Nipple retraction does not significantly increase pain, but local anesthesia should be used in patients with retracted nipples. Patient age, breastfeeding history, menstrual stage, and presence of intraductal tumors were not associated with the level of pain experienced.

Background Accumulating evidence has indicated that S100B may be involved in the pathophysiology of depression. No published study has examined the effect of the antidepressant drug venlafaxine on S100B in animal models of depression. This study investigated S100B expression in the hippocampus and assessed the effect of venlafaxine on S100B mRNA level and protein expression in rats exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). Methods Forty Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups as control, 0, 5 and 10 mg venlafaxine groups. The venlafaxine groups were exposed to CUMS from day 2 to day 43. Venlafaxine 0, 5 and 10 mg/kg were then administered from day 23 to day 43. We performed behavioral assessments with weight change, open-field and sucrose preference, and analyzed S100B protein expression and mRNA level in the hippocampus. Results The CUMS led to a decrease in body weight, locomotor activity and sucrose consumption, but venlafaxine treatment (10 mg) reversed these CUMS-induced decreases Also, CUMS increased S100B protein expression and mRNA level in the hippocampus, but venlafaxine treatment (10 mg) significantly decreased S100B protein expression and mRNA level, which were significantly lower than the other treatment groups, without significant difference between the 10 mg venlafaxine and the control groups. Conclusions Our findings showed that venlafaxine treatment (10 mg) may improve the depression-like behaviors and decrease over-expression of S100B protein and mRNA in the hippocampus in a rat model of depression. Pharmacotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) are widely used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). These treatments have helped many patients with OCD, but there still is room for improvement. Recently, a promising psychotherapy for OCD, cognitive-coping therapy (CCT), has been developed. Pharmacotherapy plus CCT (PCCT) demonstrates higher efficacy in a shorter period of time and lower relapses than pharmacotherapy or pharmacotherapy plus CBT. In this randomized controlled trial, we investigated the efficacy of CCT for OCD treatment. One hundred and forty-five OCD patients were randomly assigned into two groups: pharmacotherapy (N = 72) and PCCT (N = 73). In each group, drug-resistant (DR) and non-drug-resistant (NDR) OCD were further analyzed to examine the efficacy of CCT. Some clinical features and the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) were blindly assessed pre-treatment and post-treatment at week 1, 2, 3, 4, and 12. The Y-BOCS scores were significantly lower in PCCT than in the pharmacotherapy group at any post-treatment time-point (P < 0.001). Compared with pre-treatment, the Y-BOCS scores were significantly reduced at any time-point (P < 0.001) in PCCT group, but only at week 12 (P < 0.001) in the pharmacotherapy group. In the PCCT group, there were no differences between DR and NDR groups' Y-BOCS scores at any post-treatment time-point. The response rates and remission rates were higher in PCCT than in the pharmacotherapy group. Three variables, the number of weeks of treatment, insight, and disregarding of obsessions, were significantly correlated with the Y-BOCS score. Therefore, CCT might be a potential treatment for OCD.

Introduction This study examined the validity and reliability of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2). The optimal cutoff score when screening for depression among Chinese college students was also determined. Methods A total of 959 participants completed the PHQ-9 and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) questionnaire. The Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders was used to diagnose depression. Statistical tests were performed to determine the reliability, validity, and receiver operating characteristic curve of the data. The concurrent validity was tested by examining associations between PHQ-9 and BDI. The sensitivity and specificity, as well as the positive and negative predictive values, were calculated for different cutoff scores of PHQ-9 and PHQ-2. Results The internal consistency values of PHQ-9 and PHQ-2 were 0.854 and 0.727, respectively. The test–retest reliability values of PHQ-9 and PHQ-2 were 0.873 and 0.829, respectively. The scores of PHQ-9 (r = 0.790) and PHQ-2 (r = 0.651) were significantly associated with that of BDI. PHQ-9 had an optimal cutoff score of 11, which indicated a sensitivity of 0.89 and a specificity of 0.97, with an area under the curve of 0.977 (95% confidence interval: 0.966–0.988). The PHQ-2 demonstrated satisfactory sensitivity (0.81) and specificity (0.96) at the cutoff score of 3, and its area under the curve was 0.939. Discussion The PHQ-9 and the PHQ-2 are valid and reliable tools to screen depression in Chinese college students. For screening purposes, cutoff scores of 11 and 3 are recommended for PHQ-9 and PHQ-2, respectively.

In this study, we investigated the activities of β-1,3-glucanase and peroxidase enzymes in the leaves of pepper cultivar A3 infected with the incompatible strain PC and the compatible strain HX-9 of Phytophthora capsici. The activities of β-1,3-glucanase and peroxidase enzymes substantially increased in the incompatible interactions compared to the compatible interactions. We also analysed the expression patterns of four defence-related genes, including CABPR1, CABGLU, CAPO1 and CaRGA1, in the leaves and roots of pepper inoculated with different strains of P. capsici. All gene expression levels were higher in the leaves than in the roots. Markedly different expression patterns were observed between incompatible and compatible host-pathogen interactions. In the incompatible interactions, the expression levels of CABPR1, CABGLU and CAPO1 genes in leaves increased by a maximum of 17.2-, 13.2- and 20.5-fold at 24, 12 and 12 h, respectively, whereas the CaRGA1 gene expression level increased to a lesser degree, 6.0-fold at 24 h. However, in the compatible interactions, the expression levels of the four defence-related genes increased by a maximum of 11.2-, 8.6-, 7.9- and 2.0-fold at 48, 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. Compared to the leaves, the expression levels of the four defence-related genes were much lower in the roots. The highest levels of mRNA were those of the CABPR1 gene, which increased 5.1-fold at 24 h in the incompatible and 3.2-fold at 48 h in the compatible interactions. The other three genes exhibited lower expression levels in the incompatible and compatible interactions. These results further confirmed that defence-related genes might be involved in the defence response of pepper to P. capsici attack.

Peroxidases are involved in many plant processes including plant defense responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. We isolated a novel peroxidase gene CanPOD from leaves of pepper cultivar A3. The full-length gene has a 1353-bp cDNA sequence and contains an open reading frame (ORF) of 975-bp, which encodes a putative polypeptide of 324 amino acids with a theoretical protein size of 34.93 kDa. CanPOD showed diverse expression levels in different tissues of pepper plants. To evaluate the role of CanPOD in plant stress responses, the expression patterns of CanPOD were examined using Real-Time RT-PCR. The results indicated that CanPOD was significantly induced by Phytophtora capsici. Moreover, CanPOD was also up-regulated in leaves after salt and drought stress treatments. In addition, CanPOD expression was strongly induced by signaling hormones salicylic acid (SA). In contrast, CanPOD was not highly expressed after treatment with cold. Meanwhile, in order to further assess the role of gene CanPOD in defense response to P. capsici attack, we performed a loss-of-function experiment using the virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) technique in pepper plants. In comparison to the control plant, the expression levels of CanPOD were obviously decreased in CanPOD-silenced pepper plants. Furthermore, we analyzed the effect of P. capsici on detached-leaves and found that the CanPOD-silenced plant leaves were highly susceptible to P. capsici infection. Taken together, our results suggested that CanPOD is involved in defense responses to P. capsici infection as well as abiotic stresses in pepper plants.

In order to assess product’s disassembly sequences simply and effectively, we present the objective adaptive entropy way, which judge information according to the difference of the evaluation indexes, and get the importance of each evaluation index in the comprehensive assessment of the project (i.e. weight of indexes). So we in turn get the comprehensive evaluation method which is based on the product disassembly sequences of information entropy .This method offers the optimal result and provides the objective weight of each index. So that the designers can improve the relative devises and plan the resource of disassembly. Thereby we can get the best disassembly sequences. At last, taking the example of the 9 kinds of optimal disassembly sequence of a certain type air-condition’s outdoor, we can verify the availability of this method.

The heat transfer performances of the fin array with shield in the bypass had been experimentally investigated. The variations of the mean Nusselt number and friction factor were obtained under varied parameters, such as the heated power input, the Reynolds number, the position and height of the shield. The optimum position and height of shield were analyzed under the identical pressure drop and the identical pumping power criteria. Experimental results indicated that the heat transfer and flow performances of fin array were marginally influenced by the power input. As the presence of the shield, the heat transfer of fin array was enhanced and the flow resistance increased. The heat transfer coefficient increased as the dimensionless shield position decreased and the shield height increased. The friction factor increased with the dimensionless position and height of shield. Evaluated under the identical pressure drop and the identical pumping power criteria, the optimum position of shield was the position where the dimensionless shield position equaled 0, and the optimum shield height was half of the fin height. Finally, the correlations of mean Nusselt number and friction factor were fitted considering the influences of Reynolds number, the shield position and the shield height. The predicted values fitted the experimental data with the deviations less than ±15.0%.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a behavioral disorder of school-age population. It is well known that 5-HT dysfunction is correlated with impulsivity, which is one of the common characteristics of ODD. The enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase-2 (TPH-2) synthesizes 5-HT in serotonergic neurons of the midbrain raphe. The purposes of this study were to investigate the potential association of TPH-2 polymorphisms with susceptibility to ODD in a Han Chinese school population. Four polymorphisms (rs4570625, rs11178997, rs1386494 and rs7305115) of the TPH-2 gene were analyzed by using polymerase chain reaction and DNA microarray hybridization in a case–control study of 276 Han Chinese individuals (124 ODD and 152 controls). In single marker analyses,there was a significant difference in the genotype (χ 2 = 4.163, P = 0.041) and allele frequency (χ 2 = 3.930, P = 0.047) of rs1386494 between ODD and control groups. Haplotype analyses revealed higher frequencies of haplotypes TA (rs4570625-rs11178997), TAG (rs4570625-rs11178997-rs1386494), TAA (rs4570625-rs11178997-rs7305115) and TAGA (rs4570625-rs11178997-rs1386494-rs7305115), but lower frequencies of haplotypes GA (rs4570625-rs11178997) and GAG (rs4570625-rs11178997-rs1386494) in ODD compared to control groups. These findings suggest the role of these TPH-2 gene variants in susceptibility to ODD. Some haplotypes might be the risk factors for Chinese Han children with ODD, while others might be preventable factors.

We consider the finite interactions of the generalized Proca theory including the sixth-order Lagrangian and derive the full linear perturbation equations of motion on the flat Friedmann-Lema\^{i}tre-Robertson-Walker background in the presence of a matter perfect fluid. By construction, the propagating degrees of freedom (besides the matter perfect fluid) are two transverse vector perturbations, one longitudinal scalar, and two tensor polarizations. The Lagrangians associated with intrinsic vector modes neither affect the background equations of motion nor the second-order action of tensor perturbations, but they do give rise to non-trivial modifications to the no-ghost condition of vector perturbations and to the propagation speeds of vector and scalar perturbations. We derive the effective gravitational coupling $G_{\rm eff}$ with matter density perturbations under a quasi-static approximation on scales deep inside the sound horizon. We find that the existence of intrinsic vector modes allows a possibility for reducing $G_{\rm eff}$. In fact, within the parameter space, $G_{\rm eff}$ can be even smaller than the Newton gravitational constant $G$ at the late cosmological epoch, with a peculiar phantom dark energy equation of state (without ghosts). The modifications to the slip parameter $\eta$ and the evolution of growth rate $f\sigma_8$ are discussed as well. Thus, dark energy models in the framework of generalized Proca theories can be observationally distinguished from the $\Lambda$CDM model according to both cosmic growth and expansion history. Furthermore, we study the evolution of vector perturbations and show that outside the vector sound horizon the perturbations are nearly frozen and start to decay with oscillations after the horizon entry., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures

We consider a massive vector field with derivative interactions that propagates only the 3 desired polarizations (besides two tensor polarizations from gravity) with second-order equations of motion in curved space-time. The cosmological implications of such generalized Proca theories are investigated for both the background and the linear perturbation by taking into account the Lagrangian up to quintic order. In the presence of a matter fluid with a temporal component of the vector field, we derive the background equations of motion and show the existence of de Sitter solutions relevant to the late-time cosmic acceleration. We also obtain conditions for the absence of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities of tensor, vector, and scalar perturbations in the small-scale limit. Our results are applied to concrete examples of the general functions in the theory, which encompass vector Galileons as a specific case. In such examples, we show that the de Sitter fixed point is always a stable attractor and study viable parameter spaces in which the no-ghost and stability conditions are satisfied during the cosmic expansion history., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, revised version

This study investigates the role of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) features as mediators of the effects of childhood maltreatment on severe intrafamilial physical violence amongst Chinese male perpetrators. A cross-sectional survey and face-to-face interview were conducted to examine childhood maltreatment, personality disorder features, impulsivity, aggression, and severe intrafamilial physical violence in a community sample of 206 abusive men in China. The results suggest that ASPD or BPD features mediate between childhood maltreatment and intimate partner violence perpetration in Chinese abusive men. These findings may yield clinical and forensic implications for assessing the psychopathology of abusive men, and may steer the intervention of intimate partner violence.
