Abstract Background To assess pregnancy outcomes in women with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) reinfection. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study that included pregnant women who contracted coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) once or twice during pregnancy and who gave birth between 1 October 2022 and 15 August 2023 in Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital (Shanghai, China). We collected their clinical data and compared the frequency of adverse pregnancy outcomes between the reinfection group and the primary infection group, such as preterm birth, fetal growth restriction (FGR), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), common pregnancy-related conditions, birth weight, and neonatal unit admission. Results We observed a 7.7% reinfection rate among the 1,405 women who contracted COVID-19 during pregnancy. There were no significant differences in the frequency of preterm birth, FGR, HDP, other common pregnancy-related conditions, birth weight, or rate of neonatal unit admission between the reinfection and single infection groups. All our participants were unvaccinated, and all had mild symptoms. Conclusion Our study showed no significant association between SARS-CoV-2 reinfection and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract Background Epidemiological observational studies have elucidated a correlation between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and bronchiectasis. However, the causal nature of this association remains ambiguous. To clarify this potential causal linkage, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore the bidirectional causality between RA and bronchiectasis. Methods Summary statistics for RA and bronchiectasis were obtained from the IEU OpenGWAS database We employed various methods, including inverse variance weighting (IVW), MR-Egger, weighted median, weighted mode, and simple mode, to explore potential causal links between RA and bronchiectasis. Additionally, a series of sensitivity studies, such as Cochran’s Q test, MR Egger intercept test, and leave-one-out analysis, were conducted to assess the MR analysis’s accuracy further. Results In the forward MR analysis, the primary analysis indicated that a genetic predisposition to RA correlated with an increased risk of bronchiectasis in European populations (IVW odds ratio (OR): 1.28, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.20–1.37, p = 1.18E-13). Comparable results were noted in the East Asian subjects (IVW OR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.30–1.34, p = 8.33E-07). The OR estimates from the other four methods were consistent with those obtained from the IVW method. Sensitivity analysis detected no evidence of horizontal pleiotropy or heterogeneity. Conversely, in the reverse MR analysis, we found no evidence to support a genetic causality between bronchiectasis and RA in either European or East Asian populations. Conclusion This study indicates that genetic predisposition to RA correlates with a heightened risk of bronchiectasis in both European and East Asian populations. These results imply that routine screening for bronchiectasis in RA patients could be beneficial, and effective management of RA may contribute to a reduced risk of bronchiectasis. Future research should aim to clarify the underlying mechanisms linking these two conditions.

Abstract Knowledge sharing as an altruistic behavior has gained widespread attention. In the information age, online sharing is increasingly popular and has become an important way of exchanging and stimulating knowledge. Through a survey of 458 employees in China, this study examines the influence mechanism of need for approval on individual online sharing behavior and the moderating effect of gratitude and social intelligence. Study findings show that self-presentation has a mediating effect between need for approval and online sharing behavior, and individual need for approval can promote online sharing behavior by enhancing self-presentation. Gratitude and social intelligence both have positive moderating effects on the relations between self-presentation and online sharing behavior. Gratitude moderates the indirect influence of need for approval on online sharing behavior through self-presentation. Individuals with high gratitude and high social intelligence at the same time can strengthen the positive effect of self-presentation on online sharing behavior. Individuals can meet their approval need and obtain learning opportunities through online sharing behaviors. Organizations can select talents and obtain valuable information by establishing sharing platforms. Governments should also regulate online platforms for knowledge exchange as well as encourage individual online sharing behaviors.

In the evolving domain of built-up area surveillance, remote sensing technology emerges as an essential instrument for Change Detection (CD). The introduction of deep learning has notably augmented the precision and efficiency of CD. This study focuses on the integration of deep learning methodologies, specifically the diffusion model, into remote sensing CD tasks for built-up urban areas. The goal is to explore the potential of a pre-trained Text-to-Image Stable Diffusion model for CD tasks and propose a new model called the Difference Guided Diffusion Model (DGDM). DGDM incorporates multiple pre-training techniques for image feature extraction and introduces the Difference Attention Module (DAM) and an Image-to-Text (ITT) adapter to improve the correlation between image features and text semantics. Additionally, DGDM utilizes attention generated from pre-trained Denoise UNet to enhance CD predictions. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated through comparative assessments on four datasets, demonstrating its superiority over previous deep learning methods and its ability to produce more precise and detailed CD results. This innovative approach offers a promising direction for future research in urban remote sensing, emphasizing the potential of diffusion models in enhancing urban CD precision and automation. The objective of this study is to explore the associations between obesity, body composition, and the self-reported risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and to examine whether the risk of OSA is related to metabolic abnormalities in children and adolescents aged 6–17 years. Utilizing data from the 2022 to 2023 Beijing Children and Adolescents Health Cohort baseline survey, 5000 school-aged participants were analyzed. OSA risk was assessed via the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire, with anthropometric and body composition measurements taken. Metabolic markers included blood pressure, lipid levels, blood glucose, and uric acid. Associations were analyzed using logistic regression and generalized linear models. Results showed that 88.6% were low-risk and 11.4% were high-risk for OSA. Overweight (aOR 1.53, 95% CI 1.22–1.92), obesity (aOR 1.94, 95% CI 1.57–2.40), and abdominal obesity (aOR 1.59, 95% CI 1.31–1.93) significantly increased OSA risk. High fat mass was a critical factor, while muscle mass was not, especially in those who were overweight and obese. Associations of OSA risk with metabolic abnormalities were non-significant after adjusting for BMI. Our research highlights the significant associations of obesity and body composition with OSA risk, with child BMI influencing the relationship between OSA and metabolic abnormalities. Future research should explore causative relationships and the enduring impacts of OSA on metabolic health in children.

In the sphere of urban renewal of historic districts, preserving and innovatively reinterpreting traditional architectural styles remains a primary research focus. However, the modernization and adaptive reuse of traditional buildings often necessitate changes in their functionality. To cater to the demands of tourism in historic districts, many traditional residential buildings require conversion to commercial use, resulting in a mismatch between their external form and their internal function. This study explored an automated approach to transform traditional residences into commercially viable designs, offering an efficient and scalable solution for the modernization of historic architecture. We developed a methodology based on diffusion models, focusing on a dataset of nighttime shopfront facades. By training a low-rank adaptation (LoRA) model and integrating the ControlNet model, we enhanced the accuracy and stability of the generated images. The methodology’s performance was validated through qualitative and quantitative assessments, optimizing the batch size, repetition, and learning rate configurations. These evaluations confirmed the method’s effectiveness. Our findings significantly advance the modern commercial style transformation of historical architectural facades, providing a novel solution that maintains the aesthetic and functional integrity, thereby fostering breakthroughs in traditional design thinking and exploring new possibilities for the preservation and commercial adaptation of historical buildings.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the safety of the inactivated COVID-19 vaccines in early pregnant women in view of their adverse-effect profile and associated maternal-fetal complications, as well as to evaluate their immunogenicity. Methods: In this prospective observational cohort study, 232 women in their first trimester or those in the periconception period who inadvertently received two doses of inactivated COVID-19 vaccine between January 21, 2021, and January 14, 2022 were analyzed. Meanwhile, 735 unvaccinated early pregnancy women were also included in the study at a case-to-control ratio of 1:3. Results: The vaccination group did not have an increased miscarriage rate compared with that of the control group (P = 0.918). Furthermore, the birth defect rates in the vaccine group and control group were 0.83% and 1.0%, respectively. Vaccination did not increase the risk of small for gestational age, gestational diabetes mellitus, preterm, or hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (P >0.01). Within 12 weeks after the second dose, the inactivated vaccine effectively produced neutralizing antibody (NAb) against SARS-CoV-2. The NAb levels in the paired umbilical cord serum and maternal serum samples during delivery were negative in both groups. The T-cell subset remained within the normal range in both groups. Conclusion: Therefore, our study proves that inactivated COVID-19 vaccines are safe for mothers and fetuses and also effective in producing NAb against SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract Background Interleukin‐33 (IL‐33) exacerbates asthma probably through type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s). Nevertheless, the association between eosinophilic asthma (EA) and ILC2s remains obscure, and the mechanisms by which IL‐33 affects ILC2s are yet to be clarified. Methods ILC2s were evaluated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, induced sputum, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid obtained from patients with EA. Confocal microscopy was performed to locate ILC2s in lung tissue and the mRNA expression of ILC2‐related genes was also evaluated in the EA model. The proliferation of ILC2s isolated from humans and mice was assessed following IL‐33 or anti‐IL‐33 stimulation. Results The counts, activation, and mRNA expression of relevant genes in ILC2s were higher in PBMCs and airways of patients with EA. In addition, ILC2 cell counts correlated with Asthma control test, blood eosinophil count, Fractional exhaled nitric oxide level, and predicted eosinophilic airway inflammation. IL‐33 induced stronger proliferation of ILC2s and increased their density around blood vessels in the lungs of mice with EA. Moreover, IL‐33 treatment increased the counts and activation of ILC2s and lung inflammatory scores, whereas anti‐IL‐33 antibody significantly reversed these effects in EA mice. Finally, IL‐33 enhanced PI3K and AKT protein expression in ILC2s, whereas inhibition of the PI3K/AKT pathway decreased IL‐5 and IL‐13 production by ILC2s in EA. Conclusions ILC2s, especially activated ILC2s, might be critical markers of EA. IL‐33 can induce and activate ILC2s in the lungs via the PI3K/AKT pathway in EA. Thus, using anti‐IL‐33 antibody could be a part of an effective treatment strategy for EA.

Abstract Background Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) maintain the hematopoietic system homeostasis through self‐renewal and multilineage differentiation potential. HSC are regulated by the microenvironment, cytokine signaling, and transcription factors. Recent results have shown that lipid pathways play a key role in the regulation of HSC quiescence, proliferation, and division. However, the mechanism by which lipid metabolism regulates HSC proliferation and differentiation remains to be clarified. Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is an essential enzyme in the anabolism and catabolism of very low‐density lipoprotein, chylomicrons, and triglyceride‐rich lipoproteins. Methods The percentage of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells and immune cells were determined by fluorescence‐activated cell sorting (FACS). The function and the mechanism of HSCs were analyzed by cell colony forming assay and qPCR analysis. The changes in LPL+/− HSC microenvironment were detected by transplantation assays using red fluorescent protein (RFP) transgenic mice. Results To explore the function of LPL in HSC regulation, heterozygous LPL‐knockout mice (LPL+/−) were established and analyzed by FACS. LPL+/− mice displayed decreased hematopoietic stem/progenitor cell compartments. In vitro single‐cell clonogenic assays and cell‐cycle assays using FACS promoted the cell cycle and increased proliferation ability. qPCR analysis showed the expression of p57KIP2 and p21WAF1/CIP1 in LPL+/− mice was upregulated. Conclusions LPL+/− mice exhibited HSC compartment impairment due to promotion of HSC proliferation, without any effects on the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment.

The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region ranks first among the five major pastoral areas in terms of lamb breeding of China. The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has a vast territory, with many famous grasslands and thousands of forage plants and multiple local high-quality lamb breeds. After hundreds of years of artificial breeding and improvement, Mongolian sheep have developed many varieties. Different diets, feeding and treatment methods have effects on the production performance, lipid deposition and flavor composition of mutton sheep. Therefore, understanding the relationship among Inner Mongolian lamb, meat quality, and flavor will improve the production of high-quality mutton. The regulation of meat quality and flavor will have a profound impact on the deep processing and income-generating capabilities of mutton. Non-genetic factors affect the quality and flavor of mutton, which are more intuitive than genetic factors. In this review, we cover the contributions made by scientists to explore and improve the quality and flavor of Inner Mongolia lambs through non-genetic means, compare the differences between grazing and drylot-feeding in detail, and summarize some feed additives. We hope that based on our review, we can provide some inspiration to improve the meat quality of Mongolian sheep.

Abstract Background and objectives Adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) autologous transplantation has been a promising strategy for aging-related disorders. However, the relationship between ADSCs senescence and organismal aging has not been clearly established. Therefore, we aimed at evaluating senescence properties of ADSCs from different age donors and to verify the influence of organismal aging on the proliferation and function of ADSCs in vitro, providing the theoretical basis for the clinical application of autologous ADSCs transplantation. Methods and results The ADSCs were obtained from 1-month-old and 20-month-old mice. The cells characteristics, functions, gene expression levels, apoptosis proportion, cell cycle, SA-β-gal staining, and transcription features were evaluated. Compared to ADSCs from 1-month-old mice, ADSCs from 20-month-old mice exhibited some senescence-associated changes, including inhibited abilities to proliferate. Moreover, differentiation abilities, cell surface markers, and cytokines secreting differed between 1M and 20M ADSCs. SA-β-Gal staining did not reveal differences between the two donor groups, while cells exhibited more remarkable age-related changes through continuous passages. Based on transcriptome analysis and further detection, the CCL7-CCL2-CCR2 axis is the most probable mechanism for the differences. Conclusions ADSCs from old donors have some age-related alterations. The CCL7-CCL2-CCR2 axis is a potential target for gene therapy to reduce the harmful effects of ADSCs from old donors. To improve on autologous transplantation, we would recommend that ADSCs should be cryopreserved in youth with a minimum number of passages or block CCL7-CCL2-CCR2 to abolish the effects of age-related alterations in ADSCs through the Chemokine signaling pathway.

Tropheryma whipplei is the bacterium associated with Whipple’s disease (WD), a chronic systemic infectious disease primarily involving the gastrointestinal tract. T. whipplei can also be detected in different body site of healthy individuals, including saliva and feces. Traditionally, Tropheryma whipplei has a higher prevalence in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of immunocompromised individuals. Few studies have explored the significance of the detection of T. whipplei in BALF. Herein, we retrospectively reviewed 1725 BALF samples which detected for metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) from March 2019 to April 2022 in Zhuhai, China. Seventy BALs (70/1725, 4.0%) from 70 patients were positive for T. whipplei. Forty-four patients were male with an average age of 50 years. The main symptoms included cough (23/70), expectoration (13/70), weight loss (9/70), and/or dyspnea (8/70), but gastrointestinal symptoms were rare. Chronic liver diseases were the most common comorbidity (n=15, 21.4%), followed by diabetes mellitus (n=13, 18.6%). Only nine patients (12.9%) were immunocompromised. Twenty-four patients (34.3%) were finally diagnosed with reactivation tuberculosis and 15 patients (21.4%) were diagnosed with lung tumors, including 13 primary lung adenocarcinoma and two lung metastases. Fifteen patients (21.4%) had pneumonia. Among the 20 samples, T. whipplei was the sole agent, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex was the most common detected other pathogens. Among the non-tuberculosis patients, 31 (31/46, 67.4%) had ground glass nodules or solid nodules on chest CT. Our study indicates that T. whipplei should be considered as a potential contributing factor in some lung diseases. For non-immunocompromised patients, the detection of T. whipplei also needs attention. The mNGS technology improves the detection and attention of rare pathogens. In the future, the infection, colonization, and prognosis of T. whipplei in lung still need to be studied.

Abstract Animal models provide an opportunity to assess the optimal treatment way and the underlying mechanisms of direct clinical application of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs). Previous studies have evaluated the effects of primitive and induced ADSCs in animal models of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Here, eight databases were systematically searched for studies on the effects and in vivo changes caused by ADSC intervention. Quality assessment was conducted using a 10-item risk of bias tool. For the subsequent meta-analysis, study characteristics were extracted and effect sizes were computed. Ten out of 2324 published articles (n = 169 animals) were selected for further meta-analysis. Background: Few studies have explored the correlation between asthma medication and features on HRCT images. We aim to analyse the differences and temporal changes of lung function and airway resistance in asthma with diverse HRCT phenotypes in a short period after inhalation of budesonide/formoterol. Method: This observational study recruited 55 adult patients with varying severities of asthma. We performed detailed airway metrics measurements of chest CT scans, such as airway wall thickness (WT), wall area percentage (WA%), wall thickness percentage (T/OR), and airways with an inner perimeter of 10 mm (Pi10). The effect of lung structural features on asthma medication response was explored according to the WA% and T/OR twelve hours post-drug administration. Using multivariable regression models, we then assessed the influence of WA% on lung function. Results: WA% (p < 0.001) and T/OR (p < 0.001) significantly increased in asthma than in healthy control subjects. Compared to mild asthma, airway walls were further thickened (WA%, p = 0.023; T/OR: p = 0.029) and associated with lumen narrowing (Pi10, p = 0.055) in moderate to severe asthma. WA% and T/OR correlated well with lung function (FEV1, FVC, MMEF, and PEF) and airway resistance (R5, R20, Rp, and Fres). Regression analysis showed that MEF25 decreased with increasing age and WA% (R2 = 0.58, p < 0.001). Patients with thickened airway walls experienced a maximal increase in FVC, FEV1, and PEF at 2 h (p < 0.001) and a maximal decrease of R5, Z5, and Rp at 2 h (p < 0.001) in those with a thickened airway pattern. Conclusions: Asthma patients with different bronchial wall thicknesses exhibited variable lung function changes. Specifically, patients with thick airway wall patterns were more sensitive to inhaled budesonide in the short term.

BackgroundImpulse oscillometry (IOS) can be used to evaluate airway impedance in patients with obstructive airway diseases. Previous studies have demonstrated that IOS parameters differ between patients with bronchiectasis and healthy controls. This study aims to explore the usefulness of IOS in assessing disease severity and airway reversibility in patients with bronchiectasis.MethodSeventy-four patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis who visited our Respiratory Medicine outpatient clinic were consecutively recruited. Spirometry, plethysmography and IOS tests were performed. Patients were stratified into mild, moderate and severe disease according to Reiff, Bhalla, BSI, FACED, and BRICS scores. Airway reversibility was measured by bronchodilation test (BDT) and the result was classified as positive or negative. ROC curves of IOS parameters were used to assess the usefulness of IOS parameters in predicting airway reversibility. Correlations between the IOS, spirometric lung function and bronchiectasis severity parameters were analyzed.ResultsMany IOS parameters, such as airway resistance at 5 Hz (R5), small airways resistance (R5–R20), total airway reactance (X5), resonance frequency (Fres), total airway impedance at 5 Hz (Z5), and peripheral resistance (Rp) increased in patients with bronchiectasis who presented a moderate to severe severity as categorized by the FACED, BSI and Reiff scores. Large airway resistance (R20) and central resistance (Rc) were not significantly different among groups with different bronchiectasis severity. The difference between R5 and R20 (R5-R20) showed 81.0% sensitivity, and 69.8%specificity in predicting the airway reversibility in bronchiectasis with AUC of 0.794 (95%CI, 0.672–0.915).ConclusionIOS measurements are useful indicators of bronchiectasis severity and may be useful for predicting the airway reversibility.

Lipid is the building block and an important source of energy, contributing to the malignant behavior of tumor cells. Recent studies suggested that lipid droplets (LDs) accumulations were associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) progression. Solute carrier family 27 member 6 (SLC27A6) mediates the cellular uptake of long-chain fatty acid (LCFA), a necessary lipid component. However, the functions of SLC27A6 in NPC remain unknown. Here, we found a significant reduction of SLC27A6 mRNA in NPC tissues compared with normal nasopharyngeal epithelia (NNE). The promoter methylation ratio of SLC27A6 was greater in NPC than in non-cancerous tissues. The demethylation reagent 5-aza-2’-deoxycytidine (5-aza-dC) remarkably restored the mRNA expression of SLC27A6, suggesting that this gene was downregulated in NPC owing to DNA promoter hypermethylation. Furthermore, SLC27A6 overexpression level in NPC cell lines led to significant suppression of cell proliferation, clonogenicity in vitro, and tumorigenesis in vivo. Higher SLC27A6 expression, on the other hand, promoted NPC cell migration and invasion. In particular, re-expression of SLC27A6 faciliated epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) signals in xenograft tumors. Furthermore, we observed that SLC27A6 enhanced the intracellular amount of triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (T-CHO) in NPC cells, contributing to lipid biosynthesis and increasing metastatic potential. Notably, the mRNA level of SLC27A6 was positively correlated with cancer stem cell (CSC) markers, CD24 and CD44. In summary, DNA promoter hypermethylation downregulated the expression of SLC27A6. Furthermore, re-expression of SLC27A6 inhibited the growth capacity of NPC cells but strengthened the CSC markers. Our findings revealed the dual role of SLC27A6 in NPC and shed novel light on the link between lipid metabolism and CSC maintenance.

Abstract Objective This study investigated the influence of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) on lung function in early convalescence phase. Methods A retrospective study of COVID-19 patients at the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University were conducted, with serial assessments including lung volumes (TLC), spirometry (FVC, FEV1), lung diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO),respiratory muscle strength, 6-min walking distance (6MWD) and high resolution CT being collected at 30 days after discharged. Results Fifty-seven patients completed the serial assessments. There were 40 non-severe cases and 17 severe cases. Thirty-one patients (54.3%) had abnormal CT findings. Abnormalities were detected in the pulmonary function tests in 43 (75.4%) of the patients. Six (10.5%), 5(8.7%), 25(43.8%) 7(12.3%), and 30 (52.6%) patients had FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio, TLC, and DLCO values less than 80% of predicted values, respectively. 28 (49.1%) and 13 (22.8%) patients had PImax and PEmax values less than 80% of the corresponding predicted values. Compared with non-severe cases, severe patients showed higher incidence of DLCO impairment (75.6%vs42.5%, p = 0.019), higher lung total severity score (TSS) and R20, and significantly lower percentage of predicted TLC and 6MWD. No significant correlation between TSS and pulmonary function parameters was found during follow-up visit. Conclusion Impaired diffusing-capacity, lower respiratory muscle strength, and lung imaging abnormalities were detected in more than half of the COVID-19 patients in early convalescence phase. Compared with non-severe cases, severe patients had a higher incidence of DLCO impairment and encountered more TLC decrease and 6MWD decline.

Abstract Background Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder. Therapeutically, a transplantation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) can play a beneficial role in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease. However, the relevant mechanism remains to be fully elucidated. Main body Subsequent to the transplantation of BMMSCs, memory loss and cognitive impairment were significantly improved in animal models with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Potential mechanisms involved neurogenesis, apoptosis, angiogenesis, inflammation, immunomodulation, etc. The above mechanisms might play different roles at certain stages. It was revealed that the transplantation of BMMSCs could alter some gene levels. Moreover, the differential expression of representative genes was responsible for neuropathological phenotypes in Alzheimer’s disease, which could be used to construct gene-specific patterns. Conclusions Multiple signal pathways involve therapeutic mechanisms by which the transplantation of BMMSCs improves cognitive and behavioral deficits in AD models. Gene expression profile can be utilized to establish statistical regression model for the evaluation of therapeutic effect. The transplantation of autologous BMMSCs maybe a prospective therapy for patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

Abstract Background COVID‐19 is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus. Patients with severe disease have a high fatality rate and face a huge medical burden due to the need for invasive mechanical ventilation. Hypoxic respiratory failure is the major cause of death in these patients. There are currently no specific anti‐SARS‐CoV‐2 drugs, and the effect of corticosteroids is still controversial. Methods The clinical data of 102 COVID‐19 patients, including 27 patients with severe disease, were analyzed. The serum levels of total IgE and anti‐SARS‐CoV‐2 specific IgE were compared in healthy controls and COVID‐19 patients, changes in the level of anti‐SARS‐CoV‐2 specific IgE and clinical response to methylprednisolone (MP) treatment were analyzed, and the effect of high‐dose/short‐term MP therapy for patients with critical illness and respiratory failure was determined. Results COVID‐19 patients had elevated serum levels of anti‐SARS‐CoV‐2 specific IgE, and patients with severe disease, especially critical illness, had even higher levels. Application of short‐term/high‐dose MP significantly reduced the level of these IgE antibodies and also blocked the progression of hypoxic respiratory failure. Hypoxic respiratory failure in patients with COVID‐19 is related to pulmonary hypersensitivity. Conclusions Hypersensitivity in the lungs is responsible for acute respiratory failure in COVID‐19 patients. Application of high‐dose/short‐term MP appears to be an effective life‐saving method for COVID‐19 patients who have hypoxic respiratory failure.

Proactive socialization involves an active attempt to integrate into an organization, which can help an individual complete the transition from student to employee. This study—conducted via a survey involving college graduates (one year after graduation)—explores the peer attachment influence mechanism on proactive socialization behaviors and the moderating effects of social intelligence. The results of the empirical analysis show that core self-evaluation has a mediating effect between peer attachment and individual proactive socialization behavior. Peer trust and peer communication can improve individual proactive socialization behavior by enhancing core self-evaluation, but peer alienation may reduce core self-evaluation and inhibit individual proactive socialization behavior in the workplace. Social intelligence has a moderating mediating role between peer attachment, core self-evaluation, and proactive socialization behavior. High social intelligence may enhance the indirect influence of peer trust and communication on proactive socialization behavior through core self-evaluation and weaken the indirect influence of peer alienation on proactive socialization behavior through core self-evaluation. In recruitment and selection, organizations can predict the proactive socialization behaviors of candidates by investigating their peer relationships, and can also strive to create a harmonious working atmosphere and relationship to help new employees integrate into the organization.

Several studies have highlighted the roles played by the gut microbiome in central nervous system diseases. Clinical symptoms and neuropathology have suggested that Parkinson’s disease may originate in the gut, which is home to approximately 100 trillion microbes. Alterations in the gastrointestinal microbiota populations may promote the development and progression of Parkinson’s disease. Here, we reviewed existing studies that have explored the role of intestinal dysbiosis in Parkinson’s disease, focusing on the roles of microbiota, their metabolites, and components in inflammation, barrier failure, microglial activation, and α-synuclein pathology. We conclude that there are intestinal dysbiosis in Parkinson’s disease. Intestinal dysbiosis is likely involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease through mechanisms that include barrier destruction, inflammation and oxidative stress, decreased dopamine production, and molecular mimicry. Additional studies remain necessary to explore and verify the mechanisms through which dysbiosis may cause or promote Parkinson’s disease. Preclinical studies have shown that gastrointestinal microbial therapy may represent an effective and novel treatment for Parkinson’s disease; however, more studies, especially clinical studies, are necessary to explore the curative effects of microbial therapy in Parkinson’s disease.

In China, the notion of a water sensitive city has gained popularity in urban water management as a result of the detrimental effects of flooding and pollution caused by developmental activities. Urban systems and their interrelationships are critical for long-term urban water management and water sensitivity. This article is a case study considering how a strength, weakness, opportunities, and threat (SWOT) analysis-based approach to urban water management interventions in Guangzhou and Kunming cities (China) enables decision makers to identify solutions for cities to become more water-sensitive and resilient. The similar difficulties and rewards with respect to the contexts of both cities were synthesized using SWOT analysis. The contextual SWOT analysis, in conjunction with the comprehensive inclusion of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in intervention planning in these cities, revealed that a water-sensitive-cities approach requires the establishment of a comprehensively multi-objective rainwater management system; this approach would have the goals of reducing rainwater draining sources, controlling processes and adaptive measures, and governing the system to make it more resilient. The water strategy should be holistic and adaptive, capable of providing a broad range of ecological services and other social benefits consistent with the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals, and adaptable to other Chinese cities seeking to achieve water sensitivity.

Dental implants present a viable treatment option for the replacement of partial and full edentulism. Since their initial creation in the 1960s, implants have proceeded to become popular among both patients and dental practitioners due to their high success and survival rates. Despite the promising results, there remains some patient hesitation toward the acceptance of implant treatment. This hesitance mainly stems from four key factors that have greatly influenced patient decision-making: financial barriers, awareness and cultural sensitivity issues, treatment timespan, and the varying possible complications. Financial barriers generally arise from the lack of insurance benefits for the surgical aspect of treatment and the differing socioeconomic statuses of the patient population. Though dental implants have become more widespread, public knowledge of the matter is still insufficient. Patients may have altered conceptions of the procedure due to insufficiently credible information sources. In addition, dental practitioners need to consider the cultural restrictions that may be existent for some patients. The long timespan of the dental implant treatment, including healing time, may result in some patients opting for fixed or removable prostheses, which have comparatively shorter treatment spans. Biomechanical overload, infection, and inflammation are varying types of complications that alter osseointegration, ultimately leading to many complications, such as peri-implantitis. These universal barriers may hinder patient acceptance of implant treatment. However, as dental health care professionals, it is important to understand this hesitance and help mitigate these obstacles through patient education and continual reassurance and support.
