Abstract In the paper, an optical fiber sensor based on a seven-core fiber composite structure is presented, which enables dual-parameter sensing of bending and temperature. The proposed structure is fabricated by combining the strongly-coupled seven-core fibers (SC-SCFs) and a weakly-coupled seven-core fiber (WC-SCF). The SC-SCF acts as a beam coupler and enhances the Mach-Zehnder interference, while the WC-SCF serves as the enhanced section of another Mach-Zehnder interference. Therefore, the spectrum response of the fiber structure mentioned above exhibits a superposition effect of two Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs). Among them, two dips corresponding to different MZIs are used to measure bending and temperature. The experimental results show the bending sensitivity and temperature sensitivity of the two MZIs are −4.238 nm/m−1, −2.263 nm/m−1, 0.047 nm/°C, and 0.064 nm/°C, respectively. It proves that our sensor is very sensitive to bending. Through the dual-wavelength matrix method, the bending and temperature can be measured simultaneously. With the benefit of the composite structure, low cost, and ease of fabrication, the proposed sensor can be used in harsh environments.

In previous practice, the differential strain analysis (DSA) method, relied upon for estimating vertical principal stress to resolve geological stress, has shown limitations in reliability. Drawing upon observations of the Kaiser effect in rock samples, we introduce the Kaiser-differential strain analysis (Kaiser-DSA) method, amalgamating the Kaiser effect with the DSA method to assess in-situ stress differentials. Comparative evaluation with the stress relief method reveals that the Kaiser-DSA method demonstrates minimal relative error and generally consistent orientation of the maximum horizontal principal stress. Utilizing the findings from in-situ stress testing, this investigation scrutinizes the distribution patterns of in-situ stress in Yaojie Mining Area and investigates the causative factors contributing to the prevailing in-situ stress field. The study elucidates that Yaojie Mining Area is subject to the influence of compressive tectonic stress fields, resulting in elevated residual stress. Influenced by the Qinghai-Tibet thrust nappe action and the clockwise shear action of the F19 fault, the geostress field in this region predominantly manifests a strike-slip stress state typified by σH>σv>σh. Furthermore, the heightened differential stress within this locale exacerbates deformation and damage to the surrounding rock mass during mining activities, thereby exacerbating the frequency of dynamic disaster events.

Abstract The gut microbiota plays a critical role in maintaining human health, influencing a wide range of physiological processes, including immune regulation, metabolism, and neurological function. Recent studies have shown that imbalances in gut microbiota composition can contribute to the onset and progression of various diseases, such as metabolic disorders (e.g., obesity and diabetes) and neurodegenerative conditions (e.g., Alzheimer's and Parkinson's). These conditions are often accompanied by chronic inflammation and dysregulated immune responses, which are closely linked to specific forms of cell death, including pyroptosis and ferroptosis. Pathogenic bacteria in the gut can trigger these cell death pathways through toxin release, while probiotics have been found to mitigate these effects by modulating immune responses. Despite these insights, the precise mechanisms through which the gut microbiota influences these diseases remain insufficiently understood. This review consolidates recent findings on the impact of gut microbiota in these immune‐mediated and inflammation‐associated conditions. It also identifies gaps in current research and explores the potential of advanced technologies, such as organ‐on‐chip models and the microbiome–gut–organ axis, for deepening our understanding. Emerging tools, including single‐bacterium omics and spatial metabolomics, are discussed for their promise in elucidating the microbiota's role in disease development.

Abstract Background Core biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), such as Aβ42 and tau, have demonstrated high prognostic accuracy but do not fully capture the complex pathophysiology of AD. In this study, our objective was to identify novel cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers using proteomics across the entire AD continuum to predict conversion to AD and explore their involvement in AD pathogenesis. Methods A cohort of 186 cognitively normal (CN), 127 subjective memory complaint (SMC), 79 early mild cognitive impairment (EMCI), 249 late MCI (LMCI), and 132 AD individuals was analyzed, with a follow-up period of over 3 years for non-AD participants. CSF 65 peptides, as well as hippocampal and entorhinal volumes were analyzed, and cognitive function was evaluated using the 13-item cognitive subscale of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-Cog 13). Cox proportional hazards models and mediation analysis were performed to investigate associations and causal relationships. Results During the follow-up, approximately one-fourth (146/580) of the non-AD participants progressed to AD. After adjusting for baseline diagnosis (CN to LMCI) and other variables, multivariable Cox regression analysis identified three peptides (VAELEDEK, VSFELFADK, and VVSSIEQK) as significant predictors of conversion to AD. Incorporating these three peptides into the initial model significantly improved the C-statistic from 0.82 to 0.85 for predicting AD conversion, surpassing the predictive ability of Aβ42 and P-tau. Moreover, hippocampal and entorhinal volumes mediated 30.3–53.8% of the association between the three peptides and ADAS-Cog 13 scores. Conclusions These findings underscore the potential of these three peptides as robust prognostic biomarker candidates for AD conversion across the entire AD continuum, with a mechanism involving the mediation of hippocampal and entorhinal volumes.

Abstract Ultrasound-driven bioelectronics could offer a wireless scheme with sustainable power supply; however, current ultrasound implantable systems present critical challenges in biocompatibility and harvesting performance related to lead/lead-free piezoelectric materials and devices. Here, we report a lead-free dual-frequency ultrasound implants for wireless, biphasic deep brain stimulation, which integrates two developed lead-free sandwich porous 1-3-type piezoelectric composite elements with enhanced harvesting performance in a flexible printed circuit board. The implant is ultrasonically powered through a portable external dual-frequency transducer and generates programmable biphasic stimulus pulses in clinically relevant frequencies. Furthermore, we demonstrate ultrasound-driven implants for long-term biosafety therapy in deep brain stimulation through an epileptic rodent model. With biocompatibility and improved electrical performance, the lead-free materials and devices presented here could provide a promising platform for developing implantable ultrasonic electronics in the future.

Higher electrolysis efficiency than that achieved with conventional electrolysis and integrated fuel production would help to reduce dependence on bio-energy further. In this regard, solid oxide electrolyzer (SOEC) technology is of particular interest because of its unrivaled conversion efficiency, due to the favorable thermodynamics and kinetics at higher operating temperatures. In particular, SOEC high-temperature co-electrolysis (HTCE) of CO2/H2O can convert CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels, which will help to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. In this report, we present a comprehensive overview of recent research progress made with SOEC HTCE of CO2/H2O. The main focus areas are the development history, the basic principle and the reaction mechanism of HTCE of CO2/H2O using SOEC. The fuel electrode and oxygen electrode materials for SOEC HTCE of CO2/H2O are classified and introduced. The factors that affect the co-electrolysis reaction process are also described in detail, and the optimization strategy of the process conditions is explained to provide a better understanding of the SOEC HTCE process. The challenges and possible future development directions are also suggested, as guidance for future research.

For mitigating the unintended environmental impacts associated with intensive farming across the world, it is crucial to understand the complex impacts of potential reductions in fertiliser use on multiple ecosystem services, including crop production, GHG emissions and changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. Using site specific spatial data and information, a novel integrated modelling approach using established agroecosystem models (SPACSYS and RothC) was implemented to evaluate the impacts of various fertiliser reductions (10 %, 30 % and 50 %) under current / baseline and projected (RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) climate scenarios in a study catchment in southwest England. 48 unique combinations of soil types, climate conditions and fertiliser inputs were evaluated for five major arable crops (winter wheat, maize, winter barley, spring barley, winter oilseed rape) plus ryegrass. Modelled annual estimates of crop yields and biomass, emissions of gases with warming potentials (nitrous oxide, methane, carbon) and SOC stocks in the topsoil (0–30 cm) were tabulated for all combinations considered. These simulated data series could be further analysed to evaluate inter-annual variations and their implications for climate resilience and combined with additional data to quantify nutrient use efficiency and undertake cost- benefit analysis, and to contribute to inter-regional comparisons of fertiliser management at broad scale.

Achieving high strength and ductility for Ti alloys and their composites has been a key objective and also a great challenge for their engineering applications. Herein, we designed TiC/(TC18 + TC4) composites with bionic and heterogeneously lamella structures, achieving an exceptional combination of high strength and ductility. This is attributed to the formation of alternative layers of TC18-coarse grains and TC4-fine grains with TiC precipitated at their interfaces. Plastic incompatibility of these three-phases produces significant hetero-deformation-induced hardening, induced by mutual interactions of heterogeneous grains and TiC precipitates, as well as activation of extensive slip groups. An optimal yield strength of ∼ 1168 MPa and a uniform elongation of ∼ 6% have been achieved, which are much higher than those of the TC4 matrix (i.e. ∼919 MPa and ∼2%). This study provides a new strategy for composite designs to overcome the trade-off dilemma for strength-ductility.

Abstract Ultrashort pulses, characterized by their short pulse duration, diverse spectral content, and high peak power, are widely used in fields including laser processing, optical storage, biomedical sciences, and laser imaging. The complex, highly-nonlinear process of ultrashort pulse evolution within fiber lasers is influenced by numerous aspects such as dispersion, loss, gain, and nonlinear effects. Traditionally, the split-step Fourier transforms method is employed for simulating ultrashort pulses in fiber lasers, which involves traversing multiple parameters within the fiber to attain the pulse’s optimal state. The simulation is a significantly time-consuming process. Here, we use a neural network model to fit and predict the impact of multiple parameters on the pulse characteristics within fiber lasers, enabling parameter optimization through genetic algorithms to determine the optimal pulse duration, pulse energy, and peak power. Integrating artificial intelligence algorithms simplifies the acquisition of optimal pulse parameters and enhances our understanding of multiple parameters’ impact on the pulse characteristics. The investigation of ultrashort pulse optimization based on artificial intelligence holds immense potential for laser design.

Abstract With the rapid development of new energy vehicles, the users have an increasing demand for charging piles. It is generally believed that the charging pile is a kind of practical product, and it only needs to realize the charging function. However, as a product, the shape design of the charging pile will directly affect the user experience, thus affecting product sales. Therefore, in the face of increasingly fierce market competition, when designing the shape of charging piles, it is necessary to adopt the traditional evaluation method and human physiological cognitive characteristics to evaluate the shape of charging piles more objectively. From the user’s point of view, using the electroencephalogram (EEG) of the user, with the help of the multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA) method, this paper comprehensively analyzes the differences in emotional cognitive characteristics between two kinds of charging piles, namely, the charging pile with a curved appearance design and the charging pile with square appearance design. The results show that there are significant differences in human physiological cognitive characteristics between two kinds of charging piles with different shapes. And different shapes of charging piles have different physiological cognitive differences for users. When designing charging pile product shapes, human beings can objectively evaluate the product shape design according to the physiological cognition differences of users, so as to optimize the charging pile product shape design.

Given the significant spatial non-uniformity of marine evaporation ducts, accurately predicting the regional distribution of evaporation duct height (EDH) is crucial for ensuring the stable operation of radio systems. While machine-learning-based EDH prediction models have been extensively developed, they fail to provide the EDH distribution over large-scale regions in practical applications. To address this limitation, we have developed a novel spatiotemporal prediction model for EDH that integrates multiple environmental information sources, termed the EDH Spatiotemporal Network (EDH-STNet). This model is based on the Swin-Unet architecture, employing an Encoder–Decoder framework that utilizes consecutive Swin-Transformers. This design effectively captures complex spatial correlations and temporal characteristics. The EDH-STNet model also incorporates nonlinear relationships between various hydrometeorological parameters (HMPs) and EDH. In contrast to existing models, it introduces multiple HMPs to enhance these relationships. By adopting a data-driven approach that integrates these HMPs as prior information, the accuracy and reliability of spatiotemporal predictions are significantly improved. Comprehensive testing and evaluation demonstrate that the EDH-STNet model, which merges an advanced deep learning algorithm with multiple HMPs, yields accurate predictions of EDH for both immediate and future timeframes. This development offers a novel solution to ensure the stable operation of radio systems.

In this study, we examined the relationship between the sensitivity of interdigitated electrode (IDE) impedimetric biosensors and the gap between the IDEs. Our aim is to find an optimal design to maximize sensitivity. A three-dimensional COMSOL model was constructed for determining the effects of electrode gap, width, and height on impedance sensitivity, revealing a singular linear correlation with the inner gap. Considering both the simulation results and fabrication processes, we have developed three IDE prototype chips with electrode gaps of 3 μm, 4 μm, and 5 μm, respectively. For empirical validation, human anti-SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibody (mAb) was utilized, with immobilization of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein on the chip's surface for mAb capture. This interaction, further amplified by Protein G conjugation, induced shifts in the impedance spectrum. The sensitivity of each prototype chip was evaluated across mAb concentrations ranging from 50 ng/mL to 500 ng/mL. The 3 μm configuration emerged as the most sensitive, demonstrating the ability to detect mAb concentrations as low as 50 ng/mL, a threshold unattainable by the other designs. This outcome underscores the critical influence of reduced inter-electrode gap on enhancing biosensor detection limits. The findings from this investigation offer a foundational approach for advancing biosensor sensitivity via electrode geometric optimization, with broad potential applications extending beyond COVID-19 diagnostics to a wide spectrum of clinical and research contexts.

Abstract The utilization of the dispersive Fourier transformation approach has enabled comprehensive observation of the birth process of dissipative solitons in fiber lasers. However, there is still a dearth of deep understanding regarding the extinction process of dissipative solitons. In this study, we have utilized a combination of experimental and numerical techniques to thoroughly examine the breathing dynamics of dissipative solitons during the extinction process in an Er-doped mode-locked fiber laser. The results demonstrate that the transient breathing dynamics have a substantial impact on the extinction stage of both steady-state and breathing-state dissipative solitons. The duration of transient breathing exhibits a high degree of sensitivity to variations in pump power. Numerical simulations are utilized to produce analogous breathing dynamics within the framework of a model that integrates equations characterizing the population inversion in a mode-locked laser. These results corroborate the role of Q-switching instability in the onset of breathing oscillations. Furthermore, these findings offer new possibilities for the advancement of various operational frameworks for ultrafast lasers. Graphical abstract

The evaporation duct is a prevalent atmospheric structure in the marine lower troposphere with significant regional nonuniformity. This structure can trap radio waves inside its layer and enable them to propagate over the horizon with less loss. Therefore, accurately predicting the over-the-horizon propagation loss (OHPL) is important for optimizing the performance of radio-electronic systems. Considering the OHPL characteristics in nonuniform evaporation ducts, this article establishes an OHPL prediction model by incorporating prior information into the long short-term memory (LSTM)–transformer structure (IPILT–OHPL). The combination of the LSTM network and transformer is used to construct the LSTM–transformer, aimed at leveraging their respective strengths to extract important features of OHPL effectively. In addition, to improve the prediction accuracy, this article incorporates the evaporation duct height as an environmental prior information into the LSTM–transformer. Finally, this article comprehensively evaluates IPILT–OHPL model performance in different application scenarios. The evaluation results show that the established model not only has high prediction accuracy but also strong generalization ability, which provides a new method for efficiently predicting the OHPL in nonuniform evaporation ducts.

Copper-tungsten (CuW) composites have been explored in throat lining applications for the rudders and nozzles in the rocket motors, hence it is crucial to investigate their high-temperature ablation behaviors and the corresponding failure mechanisms. Herein, xCu modified reduced graphene oxide reinforced CuW (named as Cu@rGO/CuW) composites (x = 0, 1, 3 and 5 wt%) were fabricated using spark plasma sintering to evaluate their ablation resistances under an oxyacetylene torch flame and to improve their high temperature ablation resistance with in-situ formed tungsten carbides (WC and W2C) during sintering. The composite's surface after ablation can be clearly divided into two regions, i.e., central erosion region and edge transitional region. The ablation products were mainly consisted of WO3, CuWO4 and WC phases. The mass ablation rate and linear ablation rate of 3 wt% Cu@rGO/CuW composite were 0.015 g/s and 0.0023 mm/s, which are 0.25 and 0.3 times smaller than those of the monolithic CuW alloy, respectively. The superior elevated temperature ablation resistance of the composites was attributed to transpiration cooling of Cu and WO3, heat consumptions of the remained Cu@rGO with a high thermal conductivity, and in-situ formation of WC or W2C particles with high melting points. The key failure mechanisms of the Cu@rGO/CuW composites during ablation process with high temperature are thermo-chemical oxidation and thermo-mechanical ablation of oxides such as WO3, Cu2O and CuWO4.

The technology for reducing cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice is being explored globally. In this study, the ratios of nitrogen fertilizers used were 5:5:0:0 (T1), 4:4:2:0 (T2), 6:0:2:2 (T3), and 3:2:2:3 (T4). The objective of the pot experiment was to understand how nitrogen management can reduce Cd accumulation in rice by influencing soil pH, the bioavailability of Cd concentrations in soil, Cd adsorption by iron membranes on rice roots, and the transport of mineral elements. The results indicated that nitrogen fertilizer application acidifies the soil and increases the bioavailable Cd concentration. A correlation analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between Cd concentration in the Fe plaque on rice roots and Cd concentration in the roots. Overall, the application of nitrogen fertilizers increased the concentrations of Cd and mineral elements in rice tissues, particularly in Cu, Mn, and Zn, but reduced the transfer of Cd between tissues. After nitrogen application, the concentrations of mineral elements in brown rice significantly increased, with negative correlations being observed between the Cu, Mn, and Zn concentrations and Cd concentration in brown rice. The brown rice with a nitrogen fertilizer proportion of 6:0:2:2 exhibited the lowest Cd concentration, showing significant reductions of 48.04% (X13H) and 43.46% (YZX) compared to the control treatment. These findings suggest that nitrogen management can enhance the coefficients of mineral element uptake in rice, compete against the transport of Cd to the grains, and that late-growth-stage nitrogen application can be more effective in reducing Cd concentration in brown rice.

Abstract Chemotherapeutic drugs can cause reproductive damage by affecting sperm quality and other aspects of male fertility. Stem cells are thought to alleviate the damage caused by chemotherapy drugs and to play roles in reproductive protection and treatment. This study aimed to explore the effects of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) on alleviating paclitaxel (PTX)-induced spermatogenesis and male fertility defects. An in vivo PTX-induced mice model was constructed to evaluate the reproductive toxicity and protective roles of hUC-MSCs in male fertility improvement. A 14 day PTX treatment regimen significantly attenuated mice spermatogenesis and sperm quality, including affecting spermatogenesis, reducing sperm counts, and decreasing sperm motility. hUC-MSCs treatment could significantly improve sperm functional indicators. Mating experiments with normal female mice and examination of embryo development at 7.5 days post-coitum (dpc) showed that hUC-MSCs restored male mouse fertility that was reduced by PTX. In IVF experiments, PTX impaired sperm fertility and blastocyst development, but hUC-MSCs treatment rescued these indicators. hUC-MSCs’ protective role was also displayed through the increased expression of the fertility-related proteins HSPA2 and HSPA4L in testes with decreased expression in the PTX-treated group. These changes might be related to the PTX-induced decreases in expression of the germ cell proliferation protein PCNA and the meiosis proteins SYCP3, MLH1, and STRA8, which were restored after hUC-MSCs treatment. In the PTX-treated group, the expression of testicular antioxidant proteins SIRT1, NRF2, CAT, SOD1, and PRDX6 was significantly decreased, but hUC-MSCs could maintain these expressions and reverse PTX-related increases in BAX/BCL2 ratios. hUC-MSCs may be a promising agent with antioxidant and anti-apoptosis characteristics that can maintain sperm quality following chemotherapy treatment.

To solve the problems of poor surface quality and low tool life in conventional machining (CM) of AerMet100 steel, an experimental study was conducted in laser-assisted machining (LAM) of AerMet100 steel. The effects of laser power, cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut on the surface roughness of AerMet100 steel were studied based on a single-factor experiment. The degree of influence of each factor on the surface roughness was evaluated by analyses of variance and range in the orthogonal experiment, and the combination of process parameters for the optimal surface roughness was obtained. The order of influence was as follows: laser power > cutting speed > depth of cut > feed rate; the optimal combination of process parameters was laser power 200 W, cutting speed 56.5 m/min, feed rate 0.018 mm/rev, and depth of cut 0.3 mm. Compared to CM, the surface morphology of the workpiece under the optimization of LAM was relatively smooth and flat, the surface roughness Ra was 0.402 μm, which was reduced by 62.11%, the flank wear was reduced from 208.69 μm to 52.17 μm, there were no tipping or notches, and the tool life was significantly improved. The study shows that the LAM of AerMet100 steel has obvious advantages in improving surface quality and reducing tool wear.

Acute lung injury (ALI) remains a significant global health issue, necessitating novel therapeutic interventions. In our latest study, we pioneered the use of D-mannitol–cerium–quercetin/rutin coordination polymer nanoparticles (MCQ/R NPs) as a potential treatment for ALI. The MCQ/R NPs, which integrate rutin and quercetin for their therapeutic potential and D-mannitol for its pulmonary targeting, displayed exceptional efficacy. By utilizing cerium ions for optimal nanoparticle assembly, the MCQ/R NPs demonstrated an average size of less than 160 nm. Impressively, these nanoparticles outperformed conventional treatments in both antioxidative capabilities and biocompatibility. Moreover, our in vivo studies on LPS-induced ALI mice showed a significant reduction in lung tissue inflammation. This groundbreaking research presents MCQ/R NPs as a promising new approach in ALI therapeutics.

Magnetic abrasive finishing (MAF) is an efficient finishing process method using magnetic abrasive particles (MAPs) as finishing tools. In this study, two iron-based alumina magnetic abrasives with different particle size ranges were synthesized by the plasma molten metal powder and powder jetting method. Characterization of the magnetic abrasives in terms of microscopic morphology, phase composition, magnetic permeability, particle size distribution, and abrasive ability shows that the magnetic abrasives are spherical in shape, that the hard abrasives are combined in the surface layer of the iron matrix and remain sharp, and that the hard abrasives combined in the surface layer of the magnetic abrasives with smaller particle sizes are sparser than those of the magnetic abrasives with larger particle sizes. The magnetic abrasives are composed of α-Fe and Al2O3; the magnetic permeability of the magnetic abrasives having smaller particle sizes is slightly higher than that of the magnetic abrasives having larger particle sizes; the two magnetic abrasives are distributed in a range of different particle sizes; the magnetic abrasives have different magnetic permeabilities, which are higher than those of the larger ones; both magnetic abrasives are distributed in the range of smaller particle sizes; and AZ31B alloy can obtain smaller surface roughness of the workpiece after the grinding process of the magnetic abrasives with a small particle size.

Abstract The heterogeneous hydrolysis of dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) is an important pathway in nitrate formation; however, its formation rate and relative contribution to total particulate nitrate (pNO3‐) are highly variable. Here we report that nocturnal pNO3‐ formation via N2O5 hydrolysis is dependent on the regime defined by the ratio of NO2 to O3. Nocturnal pNO3‐ formation via N2O5 hydrolysis is suppressed in an O3‐limited regime but enhanced in a NO2‐limited regime. The results have crucial implications for effective control of nitrate pollution in the future. An exclusive decrease in NO2 will decrease nocturnal pNO3‐ formation in a NO2‐limited regime but may be less effective or even increase nocturnal pNO3‐ formation in an O3‐limited regime.

Liu et al. found that the formation rate of particulate ammonium is slower in the atmosphere than that observed in the laboratory, while it is sped up due to an increase in aerosol acidity driven by an emission reduction of dust in North China Plain.

Fabricating gradient structure (GS) is increasingly adopted in structural engineering materials due to the unique combinations of mechanical properties. In the present work, a gradient ultrafine-grained structure with a change in the grain size up to three orders of magnitude from nano to micrometer is prepared on Mg-2Gd-0.4Zr (wt.%) alloy sheet with coarse grains (CG) by sliding friction treatment (SFT). Compared with homogeneous CG structure, the yield strength of GS + CG + GS is improved from 126 MPa to 243 MPa, acquiring an increase of 93%, and maintains an excellent ductility of 25%, showing an extraordinary strength-plasticity combination among the reported GS-containing Mg alloys. Two-beam condition TEM and EBSD analyses reveal that the refined grain structure and grain orientation modification can promote the activation of multiple dislocation slip systems such as and slipping in the GS area, which improves the coordinate ability of plastic deformation. In addition, GS + CG + GS owns higher strength, ductility and better strain hardening ability than that of the GS + CG sample. This is because the symmetrical sandwich structure can alleviate the strain localization so exhibits a better work hardening effect and resistance for failure. This work sheds light on the deformation behavior of heterostructured material and provides a new strategy to improve the mechanical properties of wrought Mg alloys.

Dynamically tunable metasurface resonators with high Q factors and excellent sensing performance still lack research. This paper proposes a dual-band symmetry broken induced quasi bound state in the continuum (QBIC) sensor in the near-infrared region based on an asymmetric four-leaf clover-shaped Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) metasurface. The high-quality transmission spectrum can be tuned by switching the GST crystalline state. Two QBIC magnetic dipole resonances are excited at the amorphous GST state, QBIC Ⅰ (intracavity MD mode) and QBIC Ⅱ (intercavity high-order MD mode). Based on theoretical simulation, the refractive index sensitivity of the QBIC Ⅱ mode (318.05 nm/RIU) is enhanced higher than twice of the QBIC Ⅰ mode (134.03 nm/RIU) owing to the unique electromagnetic field properties. The ultra-high Q factors generated by the two MD resonance modes are 1.1 × 105 (QBIC Ⅰ) and 1.71 × 105 (QBIC Ⅱ) respectively for a small perturbation of the air hole offset distance D = 5 nm. By discussing the effect of the main structure parameters and the analyte thickness on the sensitivity, the optimal parameters are determined. The two strong QBICs supported by the a-GST metasurface are stable when the air hole’s offset from the unit center is at different directions and distances, indicating a good tolerance to fabrication requirements. These results provide a competitive switchable dual-band QBIC metasurface sensor, providing a potential route for tunable metadevices for functional sensing and dynamic control over signals.

This study systematically describes research trends of “industrial design education in China” using bibliometrics mapping from 1992 to 2021. This study aims to sort out industrial design education's historical flow in China and analyze its intrinsic links with Chinese national policies. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods is used to describe and analyze this study. A technique that combines policy historical analysis with a bibliometric review based on Citespace's knowledge mapping is used in this research. The study was conducted on 492 ″Industrial Design Education” papers included in the core collection database of the China National Knowledge Infrastructure between 1992 and 2021. The results obtained from this study are 1) Research on industrial design education in China has grown steadily over the past three decades and remained high-quality level; 2) The three main research themes are “Chinese culture,” “interdisciplinary cooperation” and “government, industry, academia and research” cooperation; 3) Innovation and entrepreneurship, evaluation system, Interdisciplinary, new engineering, and new liberal arts are the research hot spots of Chinese core journals; 4) Interdisciplinary construction in the context of new engineering, assessment system research in the context of high-quality development, and innovation and entrepreneurship education in the context of creative industry development are the future research directions.

BackgroundMyositis-specific autoantibodies (MSAs) are clinically used to diagnose and define idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) subsets. However, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms of patients with different MSAs remain unclear.MethodsA total of 158 Chinese patients with IIM and 167 gender- and age-matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. Transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq) was performed with peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), followed by the identification of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and analysis of gene set enrichment analysis, immune cell infiltration, and WGCNA. Monocyte subsets and related cytokines/chemokines were quantified. The expressions of interferon (IFN)-related genes were validated using qRT-PCR and Western blot in both PBMCs and monocytes. We also performed correlation analysis and ROC analysis to explore the potential clinical significance of the IFN-related genes.ResultsThere were 1,364 genes altered in patients with IIM, including 952 upregulated and 412 downregulated genes. The type I interferon (IFN-I) pathway was remarkably activated in patients with IIM. Compared with patients with other MSAs, IFN-I signatures were significantly activated in patients with anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) antibodies. In total, 1,288 hub genes associated with IIM onset were identified using WGCNA, including 29 key DEGs associated with IFN signaling. The patients had more CD14brightCD16- classical, CD14brightCD16+ intermediate, and fewer CD14dimCD16+ non-classical monocyte subsets. Plasma cytokines like IL-6 and TNF and chemokines including CCL3 and MCPs increased. The validation of IFN-I-related gene expressions was consistent with the findings from RNA-Seq. The IFN-related genes were correlated with laboratory parameters and helpful for IIM diagnosis.ConclusionGene expressions were remarkably altered in the PBMCs of IIM patients. Anti-MDA5+ IIM patients had a more pronounced activated IFN signature than others. Monocytes exhibited a proinflammatory feature and contributed to the IFN signature of IIM patients.

The effects of fertiliser from intensive agriculture are well recognised, but not so well for fine-sediment. Here we show how widespread ingress of agriculturally derived fine-sediment since the 1940s markedly amplifies methane emissions from streams.

Abstract Doxorubicin (DOX) is an effective chemotherapy drug, but its clinical use has adverse effects on male reproduction. However, there are few studies about the specific biological processes related to male reproduction or strategies for improving fertility protection. In this paper, we examined the effects of DOX on spermatogenesis and sperm function, and tested the possible protective role of melatonin (MLT) against DOX’s reproductive toxicity. DOX-treated mice showed signs of significantly impaired spermatogenesis, including vacuolated epithelial cells, decreased testis weights, and lowered sperm counts and motility. DOX also reduced germ cell proliferation (PCNA) and meiosis-related proteins (SYCP3), but this effect could be partially improved with MLT administration. HSPA2 expression was maintained, which indicated that although MLT did not improve sperm motility, it did have a significant protective effect on elongated sperm. IVF results showed that MLT could partially promote two-cell and blastocyte development that was restricted by DOX. MLT reversed DOX-driven changes in the testes, including the antioxidant indices of SOD1, CAT and PRDX6, and the apoptotic indices of BAX and Caspase3. These results suggest that MLT effectively prevents DOX-induced early reproductive toxicity, and increase our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying DOX’s effects on male reproduction and the protective mechanism of MLT.

Soil contamination by cadmium (Cd) has presented a major challenge in China. The objective of the field experiments in this study was to examine the influence of nitrogen fertilizer application at the full heading and milky stages on minimizing the absorption of Cd in rice. This was achieved by affecting the distribution of Cd in root plaques and subcellular compartments of the root and flag leaf. The hydroponic culture experiments aimed to examine the effect of nitrogen and Cd interaction or deficiency on Cd accumulation in rice during the late growth stage. The findings revealed that adequate nitrogen supply during the early growth stage, coupled with nitrogen application during the full heading and milky stages, led to a notable increase in Fe concentration in the root plaques during the milk and mature stages. Furthermore, it elevated the Cd proportion in the soluble fraction of the flag leaves at the milky stage. Conversely, nitrogen deficiency during the early growth stage resulted in a significant increase in Fe concentration in the root plaques, along with a decrease in Cd concentration. Additionally, the proportion of Cd in the flag leaf cell walls increased significantly, while the proportion in the soluble fraction decreased notably. Irrespective of nitrogen supply during the early growth stage, applying nitrogen at the full heading stage significantly reduced Cd transport from shoots to brown rice, leading to a considerable reduction in the Cd concentration in brown rice. Under hydroponic culture conditions, combined Cd exposure with nitrogen supply significantly increased the Cd concentration in brown rice. Nitrogen supply had no impact on the Cd concentration in brown rice in the absence of Cd. The study showed that applying nitrogen fertilizer at the full heading stage effectively decreased the brown rice Cd concentration. This was achieved by elevating the concentration of Fe in the root plaque, thereby influencing the adsorption of Cd by the roots. Additionally, nitrogen application at the full heading stage can influence the distribution of Cd in flag leaf cells during the filling stage. Ensuring ample nitrogen supply in the early stage of rice growth is crucial, and nitrogen application at the full heading stage can effectively reduce the Cd concentration in brown rice.

The dithiophosphinic acids (HS2PR2) have been used for the selective separation of trivalent actinides (AnIII) from lanthanides (LnIII) over the past decades. The substituents on the dithiophosphinic acids dramatically impact the separation performance, but the mechanism is still open for debate. In this work, two dithiophosphinic acids with significantly different AnIII/LnIII separation performance, i.e. diphenyl dithiophosphinic acid (HS2PPh2) and bis(ortho-trifluoromethylphenyl) dithiophosphinic acid [HS2P(o-CF3C6H4)2], are employed to understand the substituent effect on the bonding covalency between the S2PR2− anions (R = Ph and o-CF3C6H4) and the uranyl ion by sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in combination with density functional theory calculations. The two UO2(S2PR2)(EtOH) complexes display similar XAS spectra, in which the first pre-edge feature with an intensity of 0.16 is entirely attributed to the transitions from S 1s orbitals to the unoccupied molecular orbitals due to the mixing between U 5f and S 3p orbitals. The Mulliken population analysis indicates that the amount of \% S 3p character in these orbitals is essentially identical for the UO2(S2PPh2)2(EtOH) and UO2[S2P(o-CF3C6H4)2]2(EtOH) complexes, which is lower than that in the U 6d-based orbitals. The essentially identical covalency in U—S bonds for the two UO2(S2PR2)2(EtOH) complexes are contradictory to the significantly different AnIII/LnIII separation performance of the two dithiophosphinic acids, thus the covalency seems to be unable to account for substituent effects in the AnIII/LnIII separation by the dithiophosphinic acids. The results in this work provide valuable insight into the understanding of the mechanism in the AnIII/LnIII separation by the dithiophosphinic acids.

This study examined the effects of different carbon nanomaterials on the mechanical and tribological properties of titanium matrix composites. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene nanoplates (GNPs) and graphene oxide nanoplates (GOs) reinforced Ti–6Al–2Sn–2Zr–3Mo–1Cr–2Nb–Si (TC21) titanium matrix composites were prepared by spark plasma sintering. In the three carbon nanomaterials, CNTs react with the TC21 matrix to form TiC, while GNPs and GOs react with the TC21 matrix to form a TiC coated GNPs/GOs sandwich structure, and the formation of TiC phase promotes the interfacial bonding of the composite. GOs/TC21 composites exhibit better strength and wear resistance than the other two composites. GOs/TC21 composite exhibits excellent mechanical properties, i.e., yield strength of 1043 MPa, the ultimate tensile strength of 1183 MPa and an elongation about of 8%. The wear loss of GOs/TC21 composite decreased by 24.2% compared to that of the TC21 alloy. The superior mechanical and tribological performances of GOs/TC21 composites are attributed to the TC21 matrix strengthening brought by the TiC particles/TiC coated GNPs/GOs sandwich structure and the lubricating properties of the residual GOs, which demonstrates that GOs is an ideal filler for TC21 alloy.

Chemotherapy induces hair loss in most cancer patients who undergo treatment, which causes them significant psychosocial trauma. Scalp cooling has demonstrated some efficacy in attenuating chemotherapy-induced alopecia, but response rate varies between patients and chemotherapy class. Here, we showcase in rats a proof-of-concept treatment of using subcutaneous hydrogen peroxide and cumene hydroperoxide injections to provide total protection from hair loss against multiple classes of chemotherapy. We found that subcutaneous peroxides induce cell cycle arrest via P53 activation, thereby protecting hair follicles from the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapy on actively dividing cells. This treatment represents a highly effective and accessible way for cancer patients to maintain quality of life while undergoing treatment for cancer.

A novel Bi2S3-zinc oxide/cellulose acetate composite film was prepared through a blending-wet phase conversion and in situ precipitate method. The results revealed that the incorporation of Bi2S3 in the film increased the cavity density and uniformity, which provided additional space for the growth of active species and improved the interaction between dye pollutants and active sites. Zinc oxide acted as a mediator to facilitate the separation of electron–hole pairs effectively preventing their recombination, thus reducing the photo-corrosion of Bi2S3. As a result, the Bi2S3-ZnO/CA composite film exhibited favorable photocatalytic activity in the degradation of various dyes. Additionally, the composite film displayed effortless separation and recovery without the need for centrifugation or filtration, while maintaining its exceptional catalytic performance even after undergoing various processes.

Based on recent spatially aggregated June Agriculture Survey data and site-specific environmental data, information from common farm types in the East of England was sourced and collated. These data were subsequently used as key inputs to a mechanistic environmental modelling tool, the Catchment Systems Model, which predicts environmental damage arising from various farm types and their management strategies. The Catchment Systems Model, which utilises real-world agricultural productivity data (samples and appropriate consent provided within the Mendeley Data repository) is designed to assess not only losses to nature such as nitrate, phosphate, sediment and ammonia, but also to predict how on-farm intervention strategies may affect environmental performance. The data reported within this article provides readers with a detailed inventory of inputs such as fertiliser, outputs including nutrient losses, and impacts to nature for 1782 different scenarios which cover both arable and livestock farming systems. These 1782 scenarios include baseline (i.e., no interventions), business-as-usual (i.e., interventions already implemented in the study area) and optimised (i.e., best-case scenarios) data. Further, using the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology, the dataset reports acidification and eutrophication potentials for each scenario under two (eutrophication) and three (acidification) impact assessments to offer an insight into the importance of impact assessment choice. Finally, the dataset also provides its readers with percentage changes from baseline to best-case scenario for each farm type.

Ultrafine particles (UFPs) usually explosive growth during new particle formation (NPF) events. However, the risk of exposure to UFPs on NPF days has been ignored due to the prevalence of mass-based air quality standards. In this study, the daily deposited doses, i.e., the daily deposited particle number dose (DPNd), mass dose (DPMd), and surface area dose (DPSd), of ambient particles in the human respiratory tract in Beijing were evaluated based on the particle number size distribution (3 nm-10 µm) from June 2018 to May 2019 utilizing a Multiple-Path Particle Dosimetry Model (MPPD) after the hygroscopic growth of particles in the respiratory tract had been accounted for. Our observations showed a high frequency (72.6%) of NPF on excellent air quality days, with daily mean PM2.5 concentrations less than 35 μg m−3. The daily DPNd on excellent air quality days was comparable with that on polluted days, although the DPMd on excellent air quality days was as low as 15.6% of that on polluted days. The DPNd on NPF days was ~1.3 times that on non-NPF days. The DPNd in respiratory tract regions decreased in the order: tracheobronchial (TB) > pulmonary (PUL) > extrathoracic (ET) on NPF days, while it was PUL > TB > ET on non-NPF days. The number of deposited nucleation mode particles, which were deposited mainly in the TB region (45%), was 2 times higher on NPF days than that on non-NPF days. Our results demonstrated that the deposition potential due to UFPs in terms of particle number concentrations is high in Beijing regardless of the aerosol mass concentration. More toxicological studies related to UFPs on NPF days, especially those targeting tracheobronchial and pulmonary impairment, are required in the future.

Strength and electrical conductivity are generally mutually exclusive properties in copper wires, both of which are required in applications such as high-speed rail. Here, rotary swaging is used to manufacture copper wires that combine high strength and conductivity, and are thermally stable.

To overcome the tradeoff between strength and ductility of materials and obtain titanium matrix composites with excellent mechanical properties, in this study, the in situ-synthesized TiC particles and Ti-Al-V-Mo-Cr (Ti1400) alloy-reinforced Ti6Al4V (TC4) matrix composites ((Ti1400 + TiC)/TC4) were fabricated by low-energy ball milling and spark plasma sintering. The inhomogeneous distribution of TiC particles and Ti1400 alloy, as well as the compositional and structural transition zone, were characterized. The TiC/TC4 composite displayed a significantly higher yield strength and tensile strength compared to the TC4 alloy. However, the total elongation of the TiC/TC4 composite was only 57% of that in the TC4 alloy. In contrast, the (Ti1400 + TiC)/TC4 composites exhibited noticeably higher total elongation than the TiC/TC4 composite. Furthermore, the tensile strength of the composite increased with the increase in Ti1400 alloy content. The increase in strength can be attributed to solid solution strengthening and fine grain strengthening. The compositional and structural transition zone, formed by element diffusion, provided a better interface combination between the reinforcements and TC4 matrix. In the transition zone and Ti1400 region, a large number of α/β interfaces can effectively alleviate the stress concentration, and the increase in the β phase can bear more plastic deformation, which is conducive to improving the elongation of the composite. As a result, the (Ti1400 + TiC)/TC4 composites exhibited simultaneous improvements in strength and ductility.

Secondary osteoporosis is triggered mostly by glucocorticoid (GC) therapy. Dexamethasone (DEX) was reported to inhibit osteogenic differentiation in zebrafish larvae and MC3T3-E1 cells in prior research. In this research, we primarily examined the protective impacts of epimedin C on the osteogenic inhibition impact of MC3T3-E1 cells and zebrafish larvae mediated by DEX. The findings illustrated no apparent toxicity for MC3T3-E1 cells after administering epimedin C at increasing dosages from 1 to 60 μM and no remarkable proliferation in MC3T3-E1 cells treated using DEX. In MC3T3-E1 cells that had been treated using DEX, we discovered that epimedin C enhanced alkaline phosphatase activities and mineralization. Epimedin C could substantially enhance the protein expression of osterix (OSX), Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), and alkaline phosphatase (ALPL) in MC3T3-E1 cells subjected to DEX treatment. Additionally, epimedin C stimulated PI3K and AKT signaling pathways in MC3T3-E1 cells that had been treated using DEX. Furthermore, in a zebrafish larvae model, epimedin C was shown to enhance bone mineralization in DEX-mediated bone impairment. We also found that epimedin C enhanced ALPL activity and mineralization in MC3T3-E1 cells treated using DEX, which may be reversed by PI3K inhibitor (LY294002). LY294002 can also reverse the protective impact of epimedin C on DEX-mediated bone impairment in zebrafish larval. These findings suggested that epimedin C alleviated the suppressive impact of DEX on the osteogenesis of zebrafish larval and MC3T3-E1 cells via triggering the PI3K and AKT signaling pathways. Epimedin C has significant potential in the development of innovative drugs for the treatment of glucocorticoid-mediated osteoporosis.

Abstract High frequency ultrasonic imaging provides clinicians with high-resolution diagnostic images and more accurate measurement results. The technique is now widely used in ophthalmology, dermatology, and small animal imaging. However, since ultrasonic attenuation in tissue increases rapidly with increasing frequency, the depth of detection of high frequency ultrasound in tissue is limited to a few millimeters. In this paper, a novel method of using Golay-coded excitation as a replacement for conventional single-pulse excitation in high frequency ultrasound biomicroscopy was proposed, and real-time imaging was realized. While maintaining the transmission voltage and image resolution unchanged, the detection depth can be effectively improved. The ultrasonic transmission frequency is 30 MHz and the transmission voltage is ± 60 V p-p. In this study, 4-bit, 8-bit, and 16-bit coding sequences and decoding compression were used. To verify the effectiveness of the coding sequence in real-time imaging of ultrasound biomicroscopy, we designed a 10-μm diameter line target echo experiment, an ultrasound phantom experiment, and an in vitro porcine eye experiment. The experimental results show that the code/decode method of signal processing can not only maintain a resolution consistent with that of single-pulse transmission, but can also improve the detection depth and signal-to-noise ratio.

Red mud (RM) with the high alkalinity as a catalyst was evaluated for coal pyrolysis in a fixed bed as well as CO2 gasification of its resultant char in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The addition of RM into coal could improve the quality of tar during pyrolysis and enhance the reactivity of char during gasification. For catalytic pyrolysis with 12 wt% RM at 600 °C, the light fraction in tar was 72.0 wt%, which increased by 20.0%, compared with coal pyrolysis alone. The role of metal oxides in RM on coal pyrolysis was further clarified as well. After catalytic pyrolysis with RM, the specific surface area of resultant char increased, especially for mesoporous surface area, and meanwhile the sodium in RM was proved to migrate to the char surface. These positive factors contributed to the CO2 gasification activity of char. RM with the high alkalinity showed a promising catalyst candidate for coal pyrolysis and gasification in terms of its catalytic effects and low cost.

Due to profound impact on climate and human health, air quality has attracted attention from all levels of the civil society. The key step in the provision of required tools for the society to tackle the complex air quality problem is to characterize it in a comprehensive manner with a long-term perspective. Here, we describe a continuous and comprehensive observation station and its accompanying state-of-the-art instrumentation that was established to investigate the complex urban atmospheric environment in a rapidly developing Chinese Megacity. The station, located in downtown Beijing, aims to study air quality by identifying the major atmospheric pollutants and key processes determining their formation and loss mechanisms. A few hundreds of parameters are continuously measured with the state-of-the-art instruments, including trace gas concentrations, aerosol particle size distributions, and mass concentrations, covering aerosol particle chemical composition from molecules to micrometer-sized aerosol particles. This produced long-term, comprehensive big data with around $$1 \times {10^{11}}$$ bytes per year. In this paper, we provide an overview on the facilities of the station, the instrumentation used, the workflow of continuous observations and examples of results from 2018 to 2019 and a basis for establishing a modern long-term, comprehensive atmospheric urban observation station in other megacities.

Abstract Background The Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) can be automatically calculated from the International Classification of Disease (ICD) code. However, the feasibility of this transformation has not been acknowledged, particularly in hospitals without a qualified ICD coding system. Here, we investigated the utility of coding-based CCI in China. Methods A multi-center, population-based, retrospective observational study was conducted, using a dataset incorporating 2,464,395 adult subjects from 15 hospitals. CCI was calculated using both ICD-10-based and diagnosis-based method, according to the transformation rule reported previously and to the literal description from discharge diagnosis, respectively. A κ coefficient of variation was used as a measure of agreement between the above two methods for each hospital. The discriminative abilities of the two methods were compared using the receiver-of-operating characteristic curve (ROC) for prediction of in-hospital mortality. Results Total agreement between the ICD-based and diagnosis-based CCI for each index ranged from 86.1 to 100%, with κ coefficients from 0.210 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.208–0.212] to 0.932 (95% CI 0.924–0.940). None of the 19 indices of CCI had a κ coefficient > 0.75 in all the hospitals included for study. The area under the curve of ROC for in-hospital mortality of all 15 hospitals was significantly lower for ICD-based than diagnosis-based CCI [0.735 (0.732, 0.739) vs 0.760 (0.757, 0.764)], indicative of more limited discriminative ability of the ICD-based calculation. Conclusions CCI calculated using ICD-10 coding did not agree with diagnosis-based CCI. ICD-based CCI displayed diminished discrimination performance in terms of in-hospital mortality, indicating that this method is not promising for CCI scoring in China under the present circumstances.

Androgenetic alopecia (“AGA”) is the most prevalent type of progressive hair loss, causing tremendous psychological and social stress in patients. However, AGA treatment remains limited in scope. The pathogenesis of androgenetic alopecia is not completely understood but is known to involve a hair follicle miniaturization process in which terminal hair is transformed into thinner, softer vellus-like hair. This process is related to the dysregulation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, which causes premature termination of the anagen growth phase in hair follicles. Historically used for wound healing, platelet rich plasma (“PRP”) has recently been at the forefront of potential AGA treatment. PRP is an autologous preparation of plasma that contains a high number of platelets and their associated growth factors such as EGF, IGF-1, and VEGF. These factors are known to individually play important roles in regulating hair follicle growth. However, the clinical effectiveness of PRP is often difficult to characterize and summarize as there are wide variabilities in the PRP preparation and administration protocols with no consensus on which protocol provides the best results. This study follows the previous review from our group in 2018 by Cervantes et al. to analyze and discuss recent clinical trials using PRP for the treatment of AGA. In contrast to our previous publication, we include recent clinical trials that assessed PRP in combination or in direct comparison with standard of care procedures for AGA such as topical minoxidil and/or oral finasteride. Overall, this study aims to provide an in-depth analysis of PRP in the treatment of AGA based on the evaluation of 17 recent clinical trials published between 2018 and October 2021. By closely examining the methodologies of each clinical trial included in our study, we additionally aim to provide an overall consensus on how PRP can be best utilized for the treatment of AGA.

A single-polarization solid-core anti-resonant fiber is proposed, and the influence of the fiber core material anisotropy of the solid-core anti-resonant fiber on polarization characteristics is investigated using the finite element method. Single-polarization guidance is achieved by using the anisotropy of optical fiber materials, which also ensures high birefringence. The numerical simulation results indicate that there are two single-polarization intervals (1210–1440 nm and 1490–1560 nm), with a maximum bandwidth of up to 230 nm, when the confinement loss difference between the two orthogonal polarizations exceeds two orders of magnitude. Specifically, when the work wavelength is 1550 nm, a polarization extinction ratio (PER) of 108 is obtained by optimizing the structure parameters. Additionally, the y-polarization fundamental mode (YPFM) can be well confined in the fiber center with a low confinement loss of 0.04 dB/m, while the x-polarization fundamental mode (XPFM) has a huge confinement loss larger than 4.65 dB/m due to the coupling with the tube mode. The proposed single-polarization solid-core anti-resonant fiber has a huge potential in applications such as laser systems, fiber-optic gyroscopes, and optical fiber communications.

Ischemic stroke (IS) is a multifactorial disease caused by the interaction of multiple environmental and genetic risk factors, and it is the most common cause of disability. The immune microenvironment and inflammatory response participate in the whole process of IS occurrence and development. Therefore, the rational use of relevant markers or characteristic pathways in the immune microenvironment will become one of the important therapeutic strategies for the treatment of IS. We collected peripheral blood samples from 10 patients diagnosed with IS at the First Affiliated Hospital of Gannan Medical University and First Affiliated Hospital, Jinan" University, and from 10 normal people. The GSE16561 dataset was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. xCell, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA), single-sample GSEA (ssGSEA) and immune-related gene analysis were used to evaluate the differences in the immune microenvironment and characteristic pathways between the IS and control groups of the two datasets. xCell analysis showed that the IS-24h group had significantly reduced central memory CD8+ T cell, effector memory CD8+ T cell, B cell and Th1 cell scores and significantly increased M1 macrophage and macrophage scores. GSEA showed that the IS-24h group had significantly increased inflammation-related pathway activity(myeloid leukocyte activation, positive regulation of tumor necrosis factor biosynthetic process, myeloid leukocyte migration and leukocyte chemotaxis), platelet-related pathway activity(platelet activation, signaling and aggregation; protein polymerization; platelet degranulation; cell-cell contact zone) and pathology-related pathway activity (ERBB signaling pathway, positive regulation of ERK1 and ERK2 cascade, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor signaling pathway, and regulation of MAP kinase activity). Immune-related signature analysis showed that the macrophage signature, antigen presentation-related signature, cytotoxicity-related signature, B cell-related signature and inflammation-related signature were significantly lower in the IS-24h group than in the control group. In this study, we found that there were significant differences in the immune microenvironment between the peripheral blood of IS patients and control patients, as shown by the IS group having significantly reduced CD8+ Tcm, CD8+ Tem, B cell and Th1 cell scores and significantly increased macrophage and M1 macrophage scores. Additionally, inflammation-related, pathological, and platelet-related pathway activities were significantly higher in the IS group than in the control group.

Highly sensitive and integrated optical multi-band CO2 sensors are significant at the shortwave infrared (SWIR) region and still lack research. A compact CO2 sensor composed of a Au-disk/TiO2-cylinder/Au-film metasurface coated by polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) film, functioning at multi-band resonances as well as having high sensitivity to gas concentrations, is presented. It can be employed as a dual-band narrowband absorber, producing two strongly resonant modes at the SWIR region under a reflection-type framework of linearly polarized incidence. Moreover, the metasurface sensor possesses high refractive index sensitivity of 109.25 pm/ppm at around 1040 nm and 42.57 pm/ppm at around 1330 nm in the range of 200–600 ppm, which is suitable for detecting atmospheric CO2. Furthermore, the numerical results show that the sensitivity increases with a thicker PHMB film and optimizes at a thickness above 600 nm. The physical mechanism reveals that the higher order mode exhibits more extended near-field energy than the lower order mode, resulting in more sensitivity towards the surroundings. The design and results of our investigation show high-quality CO2 sensing performance which functions at dual spectrum bands in the SWIR region and is promising for integrated photonic applications.

Plane Wave Generator (PWG) has attracted great research interest in the industry and academia for sub-6 GHz massive MIMO base station (BS) measurement, thanks to its low-cost and smaller system setup. One major concern in the small setup is its high reflectivity level inside the anechoic chamber, which might distort the quiet zone performance significantly. Meanwhile, it is critical that the quiet zone performance is insusceptible to system inaccuracies. However, these two aspects are largely overlooked in the plane wave synthesis (PWS) study in the literature. In this article, a new PWS strategy is proposed based on parametrized field distribution over an enlarged sampling area. The proposed method offers robust design and low reflectivity level. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed PWS strategy is demonstrated in a numerical simulation.

To study the relationship between sediment concentration and the performance parameters of centrifugal pumps, Jiamakou water supply pumping station with total installed capacity of 30,880 kW was selected to analyze characteristics of the centrifugal pump in this paper. Based on a CFD mixture model, the effects of different sediment concentrations on the movement of solid–liquid two-phase flow and the performance parameters of the centrifugal pump were obtained. Then, fitting equations were established between performance parameters (head, flow rate, shaft power, and efficiency) of the centrifugal pump and sediment concentration at three working conditions (0.8 Q = 2 m3/s, Q = 2.5 m3/s, 1.2 Q = 3 m3/s) by the polynomial least-square method. Calculated values of fitting equations were compared with the measured values in centrifugal pump operation. The results show that, as the sediment concentration increases from 0.1% to 1%, the maximum volume fraction of sediment at blade outlet increased from 0.14% to 1.14%, and the maximum volume fraction of sediment at blade outlet increased from 0.7% to 2.29%. The turbulent kinetic energy inside the centrifugal pump increased from 8.74 m2/s2 to 10.78 m2/s2. The calculated values of fitting equation are in good agreement with the measured values in centrifugal pump operation, and the maximum errors of head, flow rate, and efficiency are 6.48%, 3.54%, and 2.87%, respectively. Therefore, the reliability of the fitting equations is verified. The research method can provide a reference for the calculation of performance parameters for centrifugal pumps in other water supply pumping stations with sediment-laden flow.
