ABSTRACT: The overuse of antibiotics has resulted in a surge of drug-resistant bacteria, making the pursuit of natural antimicrobials an urgent and significant trend. Encapsulation and nanoparticulation are effective ways to enhance the antibacterial properties of natural drugs. In this study, we encapsulated tannic acid (TA) with chitosan (CS) and poly (lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) using the emulsion-solvent evaporation method to enhance the antimicrobial effect of TA. We prepared a bilayer membrane spherical nanoemulsion of TA-PLGA-CS (TPC) with uniform size of 559.87 ± 1.16 nm, and zeta potential of 59.53 ± 1.07 mV. TPC could be stably stored for 90 days at 4°C without affecting the properties of the emulsion, and the minimum bactericidal concentration against four strains of Escherichia coli (E. coli) remained unchanged for 60 d. The results indicated that TPC enhanced the inhibitory effect of TA against E. coli. Scanning electron microscope images revealed that TPC treatment caused damage to the bacterial cell membrane. In addition, in vivo experiments indicated that TPC exhibited a superior therapeutic effect on artificial colibacillosis in chickens infested with Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli, as evidenced by the changes in body weight and a reduction bacterial load in heart. Furthermore, TPC reversed the down-regulation of catalase, glutathione peroxidase1 (GPX1), and GPX7 gene expression levels in intestinal tissues. Compared to the model group, TPC treatment elevated serum glutathione peroxidase activities and lowered myeloperoxidase and lactate dehydrogenase levels, offering antioxidant protection that was slightly better than that of doxycycline hydrochlorid group. In summary, we prepared a novel TA antimicrobial preparation with significant antioxidant potential and inhibitory effect against E. coli both in vitro and in vivo.

ABSTRACT: The avian influenza virus is infected through the mucosal route, thus mucosal barrier defense is very important. While the inactivated H9N2 vaccine cannot achieve sufficient mucosal immunity, adjuvants are needed to induce mucosal and systemic immunity to prevent poultry from H9N2 influenza virus infection. Our previous study found that polysaccharide from Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz binding with zinc oxide nanoparticles (AMP-ZnONPs) had immune-enhancing effects in vitro. This study aimed to evaluate the mucosal immune responses of oral whole-inactivated H9N2 virus (WIV)+AMP-ZnONPs and its impact on the animal challenge protection, and the corresponding changes of pulmonary metabolomics after the second immunization. The results showed that compared to the WIV, the combined treatment of WIV and AMP-ZnONPs significantly enhanced the HI titer, IgG and specific sIgA levels, the number of goblet cells and intestinal epithelial lymphocytes (iIELs) as well as the expression of J-chain, polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR), interleukin-10 (IL-10), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β). In viral attack experiments, WIV combing with AMP-ZnONPs effectively reduced lung damage and viral titers in throat swabs. Interestingly, significant changes of both the IgA intestinal immune network and PPAR pathway could also be found in the WIV+AMP-ZnONPs group compared to the non-infected group. Taken together, these findings suggest that AMP-ZnONPs can serve as a potential mucosal vaccine adjuvant, thereby avoiding adverse stress and corresponding costs caused by vaccine injection.

This study was conducted to investigate the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) associated with forage plants in the native grassland of western Inner Mongolia and to evaluate their effects on alfalfa silage fermentation. Forage plants and their spontaneous fermentation silages were analysed using culture-based techniques for LAB isolation; the phenotypic properties and 16S rDNA and pheS or rpoA gene sequences of the isolates were evaluated; alfalfa was ensiled with four additive combinations: Lactiplantibacillus plantarum subsp. plantarum (GI19), Lact. plantarum subsp. plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus (GI19+GI51), GI19 and 20 g/kg fresh matter of sucrose (GI19+S), and GI19+GI51+S, for 60 d. A total of 73 strains belonging to 16 species were isolated. All isolates grew at 5–45 °C and in 3.0% NaCl, and most of them grew in 6.5% NaCl. Enterococcus faecalis and Lact. plantarum were 26.03% and 17.81% of the total isolates, respectively. All additives improved the silage quality, while GI19+S was more effective for alfalfa ensiling with a higher lactic acid content and lower pH, undesirable microorganism counts, and acetic acid and NH3-N contents than remnant additives. In conclusion, the LAB species were diverse, and most of them possessed good cryotolerance and osmotolerance; GI19+S was the optimal inoculant for alfalfa fermentation improvement.

Both eutrophication and salinization are growing global environmental problems in freshwater ecosystems, threatening the water quality and various aquatic organisms. However, little is known about their interactive effects on theses stressors and the role of lake depth on these interactions. We used field surveys to compared zooplankton assemblages over four seasons in eight Yunnan Plateau lakes with different trophic states, salinization levels, and water depths. The results showed that: 1) the species number (S), density (DZoop), and biomass (BZoop) of zooplankton exhibited strong seasonal dynamics, being overall higher in the warm seasons. 2) Data collected over four seasons and summer data both revealed highly significant positive relationships of S, DZoop, and BZoop with total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and phytoplankton chlorophyll a (Chl a). 3) S, DZoop, and BZoop displayed a unimodal relationship with salinity, peaking at 400–1000 μS/cm (conductivity, to reflect salinity). 4) The two large-sized taxa (cladocerans and copepods) generally increased at low-moderate levels of TN, TP, Chl a, and Cond and was constant or decreased at high levels. The average body mass (biomass/density) of crustaceans decreased with increasing TN, TP, Chl a, and conductivity. Our findings indicate that zooplankton may be more vulnerable in deep lakes than in shallow lakes when exposed to conductivity stress even under mesotrophic conditions, and the overall decrease in size in zooplankton assemblages under the combined stress of eutrophication and salinization may result in a lowered grazing effect on phytoplankton.

Abstract. Placenta percreta with bladder bleeding can occur during gestation or postpartum, posing a great threat to both mother and fetus. But it is rare and lacks standard management strategies. We reported four cases suffering from bladder bleeding caused by placenta percreta even with hemorrhagic shock admitted between January 1st, 2011 and December 31th, 2020 in The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University. Clinical information, including age, gravidity and parity, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging manifestations, onset gestational age, bladder bleeding volume, clinical manifestations under bleeding, diagnosis, hemostatic methods, hospital stay, treatment cost, and prognosis, are presented. Two cases had bladder bleeding during the second trimester, respectively on the 22+3 and 23+5 weeks. Pregnancy was terminated timely. The other two cases had bladder bleeding on the 2nd day post near-term cesarean section when activity. All the four cases achieved successful hemostasis following angiography and concomitant embolization for iliac vessels, and one of them received electrocoagulation hemostasis under cystoscopy, but failed. They all had favorable clinical outcomes and had no long-term complications. The neonatal outcome in the two cases that bladder hemorrhage occurred after near-term c-section was good. The newborns did not survive in two cases in which bladder hemorrhage occurred at the second trimester of pregnancy. Timely termination of pregnancy is recommended when such a condition develops during gestation. Diagnosis of bladder bleeding is relatively easy, for it is characterized by fast speed and large volume, with concomitant distension of the lower abdomen, blood discharge from the urethral orifice, or the indwelling catheter. Interventional embolization is an effective means to treat bladder bleeding caused by placenta percreta, while electrocoagulation hemostasis under cystoscopy must be applied with great caution. For the pregnant women with a high risk of placenta percreta, timely and accurate diagnosis should be achieved during the gestational age, and bladder bleeding should be concerned when placenta penetrates through the anterior wall of uterus.

The characteristic of ulcerative colitis (UC) is extensive colonic mucosal inflammation. Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) is a medicine food homology plant, and the polysaccharide from M. oleifera leaves (MOLP) exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. The aim of this study to investigate the potential effect of MOLP on UC in a mouse model as well as the underlying mechanism. Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) 4% in drinking water was given for 7 days to mice with UC, at the same time, MOLP (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg/day) was intragastric administered once daily during the experiment. Structural analysis revealed that MOLP had an average molecular weight (Mw) of 182,989 kDa and consisted of fucose, arabinose, rhamnose, galactose, glucose, xylose, mannose, galactose uronic acid, glucuronic acid, glucose uronic acid and mannose uronic acid, with a percentage ratio of 1.64, 18.81, 12.04, 25.90, 17.57, 12.01, 3.51, 5.28, 0.55, 1.27, and 1.43%, respectively. In addition, the features of MOLP were identified by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that MOLP exhibited protective efficacy against UC by alleviating colonic pathological alterations, decreasing goblet cells, crypt destruction, and infiltration of inflammatory cells caused by DSS. Furthermore, MOLP notably repressed the loss of zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and occludin proteins in mucosal layer, as well as up-regulating the mRNA expression of interleukin-10 (IL-10) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ), whereas down-regulating the activation of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), myeloid differentiation primary response 88 (MyD88), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Therefore, these results will help understand the protective action procedure of MOLP against UC, thereby providing significance for the development of MOLP.

Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz (A. macrocephala) has been used both as a traditional medicine and functional food for hundreds of years in Asia. And it has a variety of biological activities, such as enhancing the ability of immunity and modulating effect on gastrointestinal motility. In this study, a water-soluble polysaccharide with molecular weight of 2.743 × 103 Da was isolated from the root of A. macrocephala. Polysaccharide from A. macrocephala (AMP) consisted of arabinose, galactose, glucose, xylose, mannose, ribose, galactose uronic acid, glucose uronic acid, with a percentage ratio of 21.86, 12.28, 34.19, 0.43, 0.92, 0.85, 28.79, and 0.67%, respectively. Zinc plays an important role in immune system. Therefore, we supposed that AMP binding with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (AMP-ZnONPs) might be an effective immunostimulator. AMP-ZnONPs was prepared by Borch reduction, and its structural features were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), TEM-energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping (TEM-EDS mapping), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size and zeta-potential distribution analysis. Then, its immunostimulatory activity and the underlying mechanism were evaluated using RAW264.7 cells. The results showed that AMP-ZnONPs remarkably promoted cell proliferation, enhanced phagocytosis, the release of nitric oxide (NO), cytokines (IL-6 and IL-1β) and the expression of co-stimulatory molecules (CD80, CD86 and MHCII). Moreover, AMP-ZnONPs could promote the expression of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), Myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88), TNF receptor associated factor 6 (TRAF6), phospho-IκBα (P-IκBα) and phospho-p65 (P-p65), and TLR4 inhibitor (TAK242) inhibited the expression of these proteins induced by AMP-ZnONPs. Therefore, AMP-ZnONPs activated macrophages by TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway, indicating that AMP-ZnONPs could act as a potential immunostimulator in medicine and functional food.

Objective This study investigated a method of preparing corn stover for Irpex lacteus (I. lacteus) treatment to improve its in vitro rumen degradability under non-sterile conditions. Methods Corn stover was inoculated with Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum), Lactobacillus buchneri (L. buchneri), and an equal mixture of these strains, and ensiled for 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. After each period, a portion of the silage was sampled to assess the silage quality, and another portion of the silage was further treated with I. lacteus at 28°C for 28 d. All the samples were analyzed for fermentation quality, chemical composition, and in vitro gas production (IVGP) as a measure of rumen fermentation capacity. Results Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) was found to improve the silage quality of the corn stover, and the corn stover silage inoculated with L. plantarum produced more lactic acid and higher IVGP than other silage groups. The I. lacteus colonies flourished in the early stage of corn stover silage, especially on the 3-d corn stover silage inoculated with both L. plantarum and L. buchneri. This led to an 18% decrease in the acid detergent lignin content, and a 49.6% increase in IVGP compared with the raw stover. Conclusion The combination of ensiling with the mixed LAB inoculation and I. lacteus treatment provided a cost-effective method for the improvement of the IVGP of corn stover from 164.8 mL/g organic matter (OM) to 246.6 mL/g OM.

Background: About half of myasthenia gravis (MG) patients with purely ocular symptoms at onset progress to generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG). Objectives: To develop and validate a model to predict the generalization of MG at 6 months after disease onset in patients with ocular-onset myasthenia gravis (OoMG). Methods: Data of patients with OoMG were retrospectively collected from two tertiary hospitals in Germany and China. An accelerated failure time model was developed using the backward elimination method based on the German cohort to predict the generalization of OoMG. The model was then externally validated in the Chinese cohort, and its performance was assessed using Harrell’s C-index and calibration plots. Results: Four hundred and seventy-seven patients (275 from Germany and 202 from China) were eligible for inclusion. One hundred and three (37.5%) patients in the German cohort progressed from OoMG to gMG with a median follow-up time of 69 (32–116) months. The median time to generalization was 29 (16–71) months. The estimated cumulative probability of generalization was 30.5% [95% CI (confidence interval), 24.3–36.2%) at 5 years after disease onset. The final model, which was represented as a nomogram, included five clinical variables: sex, titer of anti-AChR antibody, status of anti-MuSK antibody, age at disease onset and the presence of other autoimmune disease. External validation of the model using the bootstrap showed a C-index of 0.670 (95% CI, 0.602–0.738). Calibration curves revealed moderate agreement of predicted and observed outcomes. Conclusion: The nomogram is a good predictor for generalization in patients with OoMG that can be used to inform of the individual generalization risk, which might improve the clinical decision-making.

ABSTRACT: Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) continues to be a serious concern to the poultry industry as a bacterial foodborne zoonosis, which generally results in intestinal inflammation and barrier dysfunction or even death. Eugenol is a phenolic compound with various pharmacological activities involved antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects, which is expected to be an effective nonantibiotic therapy. The purpose of this study was to explore the protective effects of eugenol in the cellular and broiler models of S. Typhimurium infection and the possible underlying mechanisms. The results of animal infection showed that eugenol treatments enhanced the relative weight gains and survival rates of broilers with a reduction of the organ bacterial load and intestinal ultrastructural injury. Moreover, eugenol significantly inhibited the mRNA levels of myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) and toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4), then declined the phosphorylation of p65 and IκBα of NF-κB pathway and the expressions of inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-2, and IL-18) in duodenum tissues, while maintained the expressions of intestinal tight junction proteins (ZO-1, claudin-1, occludin). Further experiments in vitro revealed that eugenol markedly inhibited the adhesion and invasion of S. Typhimurium to RAW264.7 or IEC-6 cells, then reduce bacterial multiplication in IEC-6 or DF-1 cells. In conclusion, eugenol could defend broilers from S. Typhimurium infection by stabilizing the intestinal mucosal barrier and relieving inflammatory response, as well as inhibiting bacterial adhesion and invasion to cells.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of six common commercial lactic acid bacteria (LAB) additives [A1, Lactobacillus plantarum, L. buchneri, and Enterococcus faecalis; A2, L. plantarum and L. casei; A3, L. plantarum and L. buchneri; A4, L. plantarum, L. buchneri, L. casei, and Pediococcus acidilactici; A5, L. plantarum (producing feruloyl esterase); and A6, L. buchneri, P. acidilactici, β-glucanase, and xylanase] on the bacterial community and fermentation quality of alfalfa silage. Alfalfa was harvested at the squaring stage, wilted in the field for 24 h, and ensiled without any additives (Control) or with A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, or A6. Microbial counts, bacterial community, fermentation parameters, and nutritional composition were determined after ensiling for 90 days. The total abundance of LAB genera on alfalfa pre-ensiling was 0.38% in bacterial community. The abundances of Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and Pediococcus in the Control silage were 42.18, 40.18, and 8.09% of abundance, respectively. The abundances of Lactobacillus in A1-, A2-, A3-, A4-, and A5-treatments were 89.32, 92.93, 92.87, 81.12, and 80.44%, respectively. The abundances of Pediococcus and Lactobacillus in A6-treatment were 70.14 and 24.86%, respectively. Compared with Control silage, LAB-treated silage had lower pH and less ammonia nitrogen and water-soluble carbohydrates concentrations (p < 0.05). Further, the A5- and A6-treatments contained lower neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and hemicellulose than other treatments (p < 0.05). Overall, LAB genera were presented as minor taxa in alfalfa pre-ensiling and as dominant taxa in alfalfa silage. Adding LAB additives improved the fermentation quality and altered the bacterial community of alfalfa silage. The main bacterial genera in Control silage were Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and Pediococcus. Lactobacillus dominated the bacterial communities of A1-, A2-, A3-, A4-, and A5-treatments, while Pediococcus and Lactobacillus were dominant bacterial genera in A6-treatment. Inoculating A5 and A6 degraded the fiber in alfalfa silage. It is necessary to ensile alfalfa with LAB inoculants.

Satellite–ground integrated networks (SGIN) are in line with 6th generation wireless network technology (6G) requirements. However, security and privacy issues are challenging with heterogeneous networks. Specifically, although 5G authentication and key agreement (AKA) protects terminal anonymity, privacy preserving authentication protocols are still important in satellite networks. Meanwhile, 6G will have a large number of nodes with low energy consumption. The balance between security and performance needs to be investigated. Furthermore, 6G networks will likely belong to different operators. How to optimize the repeated authentication during roaming between different networks is also a key issue. To address these challenges, on-demand anonymous access and novel roaming authentication protocols are presented in this paper. Ordinary nodes implement unlinkable authentication by adopting a bilinear pairing-based short group signature algorithm. When low-energy nodes achieve fast authentication by utilizing the proposed lightweight batch authentication protocol, which can protect malicious nodes from DoS attacks. An efficient cross-domain roaming authentication protocol, which allows terminals to quickly connect to different operator networks, is designed to reduce the authentication delay. The security of our scheme is verified through formal and informal security analysis. Finally, the performance analysis results show that our scheme is feasible.

BackgroundThe distinguished Triple-P procedure has been reported as a conservative surgical alternative to peripartum hysterectomy for placental accreta spectrum (PAS). In this study, we modified the procedure combined with prophylactic abdominal aorta balloon occlusion and/or tourniquet and evaluated the effect and long-term outcomes.MethodsThis was a retrospective study involving pregnant patients with clinically confirmed severe PAS (including placenta increta and percreta) between January 1st, 2017 and June 30th, 2020 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University. A total of 334 pregnant women were recruited in this study. The 142 women that were subjected to modified Triple P Procedure were regarded as the observation group while 194 pregnant women that were treated with other sutures were regarded as the control group. Demographic characteristics, placental accreta spectrum score (PAS score), estimated blood loss (EBL), operative time, blood transfusion rate and volume, neonatal weight, post-operative hospital stays and costs were evaluated. Short-term complications, including fever, hematoma, thrombus, bladder rupture and intensive care unit (ICU) transfer rate, as well as long-term outcomes including breast feeding, menstruation, intrauterine adhesion, and chronic abdominal pain among others were followed up in the outpatient clinic and by phone calls.ResultsFor all cases, EBL was lower in the observation group than in the control group, 1,200 (687–1,812) ml and 1,300 (800–2,500) ml, respectively. The difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Operative time were statistically significantly shorter in the observation group [99.5 (84.0–120.0) min and 109.0 (83.8–143.0) min, P < 0.05]. Lengths of postoperative hospital stays were 4 (4–7) and 5 (4–7) days in the observation and control group, which was significantly shorter in the observation group (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in PAS scores, blood transfusion volume, neonatal weight, fever, hematoma, thrombus, bladder rupture and ICU transfer rates between the two groups. All patients, except one in control group, had preserved uterus. There were no statistically significant differences in short-term and long-term complications between two groups.ConclusionIn summary, when combined with tourniquet and/or prophylactic abdominal aorta balloon occlusion, modified Triple-P procedure may be effective in reducing intraoperative blood loss and hysterectomy in patients with placenta increta/percreta. It is a safe and effective surgical alternative to peripartum hysterectomy. However, the complications associated with interventional radiology service should be evaluated furthermore.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress may contribute to the pathogenesis and perpetuation of ulcerative colitis (UC). Previous studies have shown artesuante (ARS) has the protective effect on experimental UC. Therefore, it can be assumed that ARS can regulate ER stress and its related reactions. Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induced UC model in mice was used to testify this hypothesis. The results clearly showed that DSS exposure caused excessive ER stress evidenced by a markedly increase of GRP78 and CHOP expression, and then activated the ER stress sensors PERK, IRE1, ATF6 and their respective signaling pathways, followed by upregulated caspases12 and lowered Bcl-2/Bax ratio. However, ARS treatment significantly inhibited the occurrence of ER stress via preventing the activation of PERK-eIF2α-ATF4-CHOP and IRE1α-XBP1 signaling pathways, concurrently ER-stress-associated apoptosis in colon tissues. Moreover, ARS treatment remarkably inhibited the activation of NF-κB and the expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, improved the clinical and histopathological alterations as well as maintained the expression of claudin-1 and Muc2 in mucosal layer of colon. Notably, the classic ER stress inhibitor 4-phenyhlbutyric acid enhanced the beneficial effects of ARS; in contrast, the ER stress inducer 2-deoxy-d-glucose substantially abrogated the above-mentioned effects, uncovering the involvement of ER stress in the response. These findings indicated the protection of ARS on UC is associated with its suppressing excessive ER stress mediated intestinal barrier damage and inflammatory response. This study provides a novel aspect to understand the mechanism of ARS against UC.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate our experience with the application of uterine wall local resection and reconstruction to preserve the uterus in patients with morbidly adherent placenta. Materials and methods: In a retrospective study, data from patients with morbidly adherent placenta who delivered by cesarean section between January 1, 2013 and May 31, 2016 were analyzed. Prophylactic abdominal aorta balloon occlusion and tourniquet were used to prevent massive hemorrhage in all 62 cases, followed by uterine wall local resection and reconstruction to preserve the uterus. The quantity of estimated blood loss (EBL), operation time, and complications were analyzed. Results: The placenta penetrated to the myometrium in 10 cases, involved the posterior bladder wall in 46 cases, and penetrated the posterior bladder wall in six cases. For all cases, the mean EBL in the surgery was 1377.3 ± 605.2 mL, the mean EBL in the initial postoperative 24 h was 140.6 ± 66.3 mL, the mean operation time was 72.3 ± 24.5 min, and the mean postoperative hospital stay was 5.8 ± 1.6 days. The six cases of placenta penetrating the bladder underwent bladder repair. Sixty-one cases had preserved uterus, and only one case had a hysterectomy due to amniotic fluid embolism (AFE). Conclusion: Combined with prophylactic abdominal aorta balloon occlusion and tourniquet, uterine wall local resection and reconstruction is highly effective to reduce the intraoperative blood loss and hysterectomy in morbidly adherent placenta. Integration of perennial grass species into the current food production systems, especially in the agropastoral regions worldwide, may produce multiple benefits including, among others, a more stable productivity and a smaller eco-environmental footprint. However, one of the fundamental challenges facing the large-scale adoption of such grass species is their ability to withstand the vagaries of winter in these regions. Here, we present a comprehensive evaluation of the winter hardiness of 50 indigenous Chinese cultivars of alfalfa, a high-quality leguminous perennial grass, in comparison with six introduced U.S. cultivars in a multi-site field experiment in northern China. Our results reveal that indigenous cultivars have stronger winter hardiness than introduced cultivars. Cultivars native in the north performed better than southern cultivars, suggesting that suitability evaluation is an unavoidable step proceeding any regional implementations. Our results also show that the metric we used to assess alfalfa’s winter hardiness, the average score index (ASI), produced more consistent results than another more-widely used metric of winter survival rate (WSR). These findings offer a systematic field evidence that supports regional cropping system adjustment and production system betterment to ensure food security under climate change in the region and beyond.

Oxytropis glabra (OG) is a leguminous forage that is potentially valuable for solving the shortage of feed for livestock production, while, in large quantities, it may be toxic because of its swainsonine (SW) content. In this study, OG was ensiled with whole-plant corn (Zea mays L.) at 10:0, 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, 5:5, 4:6, and 0:10 ratios on a fresh matter basis, and, after 60 d of ensiling, the chemical composition, fermentation characteristic, SW removal rate, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) populations, and their capabilities for SW removal were analyzed. As the proportion of corn in the silage increased, the pH, as well as the propionic acid, ammonia-N, dry matter, crude protein, and SW contents, decreased linearly, while the lactic acid, neutral detergent fiber, and residual water-soluble carbohydrate contents increased linearly. Lactobacillus plantarum was the most common microorganism present in all mixture silages. Lactobacillus amylovorus and Lactobacillusbrevis were prevalent at lower ratios of corn to OG. Meanwhile, the LAB strains belong to L. amylovorus and L. plantarum had a higher SW removal rate. Our results suggested that ensiling OG with whole-plant corn improves fermentation and decreases SW content, and that 5:5 is the optimal ratio, so this type of mixed silage could make OG useable for ruminant production.

Nanometer-sized precipitated carbides in a low carbon Ti-V-Mo bearing steel were obtained through hot rolling and air cooling and were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The nanometer-sized interphase-precipitated carbides have been found to exhibit an average diameter of ~6.1 ± 2.7 nm, with an average spacing of ~24−34 nm. Yield strength of 578 ± 20 MPa and tensile strength of 813 ± 25 MPa were achieved with high elongation of 25.0 ± 0.5% at room temperature. The nanometer-sized precipitation exhibited high stability after annealing at high temperatures of 600 °C and 650 °C for 3 h. Average diameters of carbides were statistically measured to be ~6.9 ± 2.3 nm and 8.4 ± 2.6 nm after tempering at high temperatures of 600 °C and 650 °C, respectively. The micro-hardness was ~263−268 HV0.1 after high temperature tempering, which was similar to the hot-rolled sample (273 HV0.1), and yield strength of 325 ± 13 MPa and 278 ± 4 MPa was achieved at elevated temperatures of 600 °C and 650 °C, respectively. The significant decrease of yield strength at 650 °C was attributed to the large decrease in shear modulus.
