open access article Inhibitory pathways in dry anaerobic digestion are still understudied and current knowledge on wet processes cannot be easily transferred. This study forced instability in pilot-scale digesters by operating at short retention times (40 and 33 days) in order to understand inhibition pathways over long term operation (145 days). The first sign of inhibition at elevated total ammonia concentrations (8 g/l) was a headspace hydrogen level over the thermodynamic limit for propionic degradation, causing propionic accumulation. The combined inhibitory effect of propionic and ammonia accumulation resulted in further increased hydrogen partial pressures and n-butyric accumulation. The relative abundance of Methanosarcina increased while that of Methanoculleus decreased as digestion deteriorated. It was hypothesized that high ammonia, total solids and organic loading rate inhibited syntrophic acetate oxidisers, increasing their doubling time and resulting in its wash out, which in turn inhibited hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis and shifted the predominant methanogenic pathway towards acetoclastic methanogenesis at free ammonia over 1.5 g/l. C/N increases to 25 and 29 reduced inhibitors accumulation but did not avoid inhibition or the washout of syntrophic acetate oxidising bacteria.

open access article Dry anaerobic digestion usually results in inhibitors accumulation, which can be solved by adapting operation. Multiple strategies targeting increased stability are implemented in full-scale, but impacts are poorly documented. Two full-scale dry AD plants treating organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) were investigated: a semi-continuous plant with compost addition and a batch plant testing different percolate recirculation strategies and inoculum to substrate ratios. Regression tree analysis was used to evaluate the effect of these strategies on methane yields and inhibitors accumulation. Compost addition in the semi-continuous plant reduced volatile fatty acids content but dropped methane flow up to 10 % when compost constituted over 10.1 % in weight of the incoming feedstock. This reduction was linked to the limited availability of easily degradable material in the compost. In batch dry AD, methane yields increased as percolate recirculated raised up to a range of 182–197 m3 (0.342–0.363 m3/t of biomass mix). Recirculation of higher percolate volumes reduced methane production, probably linked to pile compaction and inhibitors accumulation. The ratio of OFMSW, digestate and woodchip (bulking agent) fed was determinant, and methane production was higher when digestate was over 43.1 %, waste between 45 % and 47.5 % and woodchip over 8.2 % in weight in as received basis. Woodchip influenced percolation through the pile and supported reduced total ammonia levels of 3.2 g/l when kept over 8.2 %, which raised to 5.2 g/l for lower values.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of sewage sludge can be optimised by adding trade wastes (TWs) because of their nutrient content and boost in biogas formation if non-inhibitory. However, some components in TWs might have an inhibitory impact, such as nitrogen compounds, sulphate, heavy metals, metalloids, halogens and organic pollutants (e.g., phenol). This study aimed to understand the impact of TWs on the co-digestion with sewage sludge to identify appropriate TW loads for sustainable AD operation. The composition of 160 TWs was evaluated and the constituents with potential to cause inhibition or toxicity were tested in bio-methane potential (BMP) tests. The compounds studied in BMP tests included ammonia, zinc, copper, aluminium, mercury, arsenic, chloride, sulphate and nitrate. An improvement was observed at concentrations 2–746 mg Zn/L, 1066–2821 mg Cl/L as zinc sulphate and sodium chloride in biogas production, and 2–746 mg Zn/L, 162 mg SO4/L, 25 mg Hg/L as zinc sulphate, sodium chloride and mercury sulphate in methane production, respectively. Considering the TWs characterised and the results of the BMP tests, a volumetric ratio of 10/90 of TWs and sewage sludge is proposed as a suitable feedstock for co-digestion.

Abstract The potential health risks associated with sludge cake application to agricultural land are managed by controlling the levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria which indicate the risk of pathogen transfer. Analyses undertaken following post-digestion sludge dewatering have shown unpredictable levels of E. coli increase in stored sludge cake. Presently there is limited understanding on environmental parameters controlling the indicator bacteria density in storage and the contributory effects dewatering may have. This review aims to establish the state of current knowledge on innate and environmental factors influencing E. coli dynamics and survival in biosolids. A key factor identified is the effect of mechanical dewatering processes, which transform the sludge matrix environmental conditions through the increased availability of growth factors (e.g. nutrient and oxygen). Examples of storage practices from the agricultural and food industries are also discussed as successful methods to inhibit bacterial growth and survival, which could be extrapolated to the biosolids sector to regulate E. coli concentrations. Solid state anaerobic digestion (SSAD) of water poor feedstock may be a promising technology for energy recovery. Feedstocks having high solid concentration like lignocellulosic biomass, crop residues, forestry waste and organic fraction of municipal waste may be the appropriate feedstock for its biochemical conversion into energy carries like biomethane through SSAD. Compared to liquid state anaerobic digestion (LSAD), SSAD can handle higher organic loading rates (OLR), requires less water and smaller reactor volume and may have lower energy demand for heating or stirring and higher volumetric methane productivity. Besides these, pathogen inactivation may also be achieved in SSAD of biodegradable waste. Around 60% of recently built AD systems have adopted SSAD technology. However, the process stability of an SSAD system may have several constraints like limited mass transfer, process inhibitors and selection of digester type and should be addressed prior to the implementation of SSAD technology. In this article, a comprehensive overview of the key aspects influencing the performance of SSAD is discussed along with the need for mathematical modelling approaches. Further to this, reactor configuration for SSAD and digestate management requirement and practice for solid-state condition are reviewed for a better insight of SSAD technology.

The impact of inoculum to substrate ratio (I:S) and the addition of water and percolate on stopping inhibition in dry batch anaerobic digestion of organic fraction municipal solid waste (OFMSW) was investigated. In particular, ratios of I:S from 1:2 to 1:16 and total solid contents from 40 to 25% with water and percolate addition were analysed. Tested I:S did not avoid acidification of the anaerobic digesters (ADs), and the highest biogas and methane production (16.2 and 1.7 L/kg VSadded, respectively) was achieved with the 1:4 ratio. Water addition was also insufficient to avoid acidification, and while biogas increased as TS decreased, 40.9 L/kg VSadded for 25% TS, methane yield remained low at 1.2 L/kg VSadded due to the inhibition of methanogenic archaea. Percolate addition proved a suitable strategy to increase pH buffering, with an increased methane production of 199.4 L/kg VSadded at similar TS ranges (27%). Impact on kinetics of methane formation was assessed by kinetic modelling with logistic model identified as the better fit for most of the ADs. Shorter lag phases were observed as TS were reduced, regardless of the acidification, as mass transfer limitations were reduced at the beginning of the batch, but an increase was observed when percolate was used instead of water. Increases of the maximum methane rate (Rmax) was also achieved with TS reduction, but only when acidification was avoided. This study has highlighted the need to profile percolate composition during batch digestion in order to balance recirculation of nutrients, microbial communities and toxic compounds. Non-sewered sanitation is currently dependant upon pit latrine emptying, the safety of which is compromised by the high costs of faecal sludge transport to centralised treatment facilities. Transport in turn is hindered by the complex rheology of pit latrine sludge. This study therefore characterised the compressional rheology of fresh faeces and modelled the implications for passive (gravity) or mechanical (forced) solid/liquid separation. This informs on the viability of decentralising dewatering for more efficient volume reduction and improving the economics of transportation. The gel point (ϕg) is the solids concentration where the material has a networked structure and signifies the point when mechanical intervention is required for further solid-liquid separation. For fresh faeces, ϕg ranged between 6.3 and 15.6% total solids (TS) concentration. This is significantly higher than the ϕg observed for wastewater sludge at centralised facilities, and it implies that passive gravity driven processes can suffice to improve localised dewatering. The effect of CO

In order to obviate the economic issues associated with pit latrine emptying and transport such as high water additions and rheologically difficult sludge properties, the implications of prompt solid/liquid separation were investigated. This was achieved through rheological characterisation of fresh human faeces and synthetic faeces, and comparison with aged faecal sludges. Shear yield stress, thixotropy and post-shear structural recovery were characterised for a total solids (TS) concentration range of 5–35% total solids (TS) and stickiness yield stress was determined for concentrations up to 100% TS. Fresh faeces rheology proved to be favourable when compared to aged matrices, evidenced by a lower shear yield stress and higher gel point solids concentration, suggesting that aging could alter the physico-chemical properties of faecal sludge. Fresh and synthetic faeces exhibited similar shear thinning, thixotropic behaviour with the majority of structural breakdown occurring at a low shear rate of 10 s−1, and the extent increasing with higher solids concentrations. At 32% TS, fresh faeces shear yield stress was permanently reduced by 80%, suggesting that low shear pumping could reduce the energy demand required for faeces transport. The sticky phase, which represents the region to avoid faecal transport and mechanical drying processes, was identified to range from 30 to 50% TS, with 25% TS as ideal to commence dewatering processes. This also coincides with the average solids concentration of faeces, which is achievable by source separation. Achieving microbial compliance during biosolids storage can be complicated by the unpredictable increase of Escherichia coli. Thermal treatment during anaerobic digestion (AD) and the effects of dewatering may be a significant factor contributing to indicator survival. Shear forces present during dewatering may promote cell damage, releasing nutrient for E. coli growth. The effect of cell damage on E. coli survival was assessed in laboratory-scale thermal and physical disruption experiments. E. coli growth curves for disrupted treatments were compared with control conditions and quantified using flow cytometry and membrane filtration techniques. A significant difference (p < 0.05) in the level of damaged cells between control and disrupted conditions was observed. For thermal and physical disruption treatments, the peak of E. coli concentration increased significantly by 1.8 Log and 2.4 Log (CFU (colony forming units) g−1 DS), respectively, compared with control treatments. Research findings contribute to the understanding of bacterial growth and death dynamics in biosolids.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) injection in anaerobic digestion has recently been proposed as an interesting possibility to boost methane (CH4) recovery from sludge and organic waste by converting a greenhouse gas into a renewable resource. This research assessed the effects of exogenous CO2 injection on performance and process stability of single-phase continuous anaerobic digesters. Two pilot scale reactors treating sewage sludge were operated for 130 days. One reactor was periodically injected with CO2 while the other acted as control. Two injection frequencies and injection devices were tested. The results indicated that CO2 enrichment allowed an increase in CH4 production of ca. 12%, with a CH4 production rate of 371 ± 100 L/(kgVSfed·d) and a CH4 concentration of ca. 60% when dissolved CO2 levels inside the test reactor were increased up to 1.9-fold. Results also indicated an improvement in process resilience to temporary overloads and no impacts on stability parameters.

open access article Dry digestion is a suitable technology for treating organic wastes with varying composition such as the organic fraction of municipal solids waste. Yet, there is a need for further research to overcome some of the disadvantages associated with the high total solids content of the process. Optimisation of inoculum to substrate ratio, feedstock composition and size, liquid recirculation, bed compaction and use of bulking agents are some of the parameters that need further investigation in batch dry anaerobic digestion, to limit localised inhibition effects and avoid process instability. In addition, further attention on the relation between feedstock composition, organic loading rate and mixing regimes is required for continuous dry anaerobic digestion systems. This paper highlights all the areas where knowledge is scarce and value can be added to increase dry anaerobic digestion performance and expansion.

International audience; Carbon dioxide (CO2) enrichment of anaerobic digesters (ADs) without hydrogen addition has been demonstrated to provide a potential solution to manage CO2 streams generated in the water and organic waste sectors, with concomitant increases in methane (CH4) production. This study investigates the CO2 utilization mechanisms, by considering chemical and biological pathways in food waste and sewage sludge ADs. Methanosaetaceae was observed to be the dominant methanogen in sewage sludge ADs (Abundance of 83.8–98.8%) but scarce in food waste units (3.5–5.8%). Methanosarcinaceae was dominant in food waste (14.3–32.4%), likely due to a higher tolerance to the free ammonia nitrogen concentration recorded (885 mg L−1). The effect of CO2 enrichment in sewage sludge anaerobic digestion (AD) as a potential strategy to improve the biogas yield was assessed at increasing organic loading rates (OLR). Effects on process performance and resilience were evaluated in long-term continuous AD experiments at lab-scale. The specific methane production (SMP) was sustainably enhanced in the test digester compared to a control at elevated OLRs, reaching an increase of 6 ± 12% on average at the highest OLR tested (4.0 kgVS/(m3·d)). The reduction of CO2 via homoacetogenesis, facilitating acetoclastic CH4 formation is proposed as the dominant conversion pathway. Results suggest that sufficient load of easily degradable substances is a prerequisite for intrinsic formation of the reduction equivalent H2 via acidogenesis. The enhanced resilience of the process under CO2-enriched conditions in response to acid accumulation further qualifies this approach as a viable option for improving AD performance by converting a waste stream into a valuable product.

The tightening of phosphorus (P) standards has forced the UK water industry to identify options to improve P removal in sewage treatment works. This article presents results of 12-month trials testing three technologies at full-scale: a membrane bioreactor (MBR), a continuous backwash up-flow sand filter (CBUSF) and a high-rate compressible media filter (HRCMF). The aim of the trial was to determine the lowest total phosphorus (TP) concentrations that these systems can consistently achieve under stable operating conditions. MBR is a mature technology combining biological treatment with membrane filtration for solids removal. CBUSF uses granular media deep filtration as removal process while HRCMF uses a synthetic fibre compressible media to retain solids and both technologies are typically applied as tertiary treatments in combination with chemical P removal. The lowest TP effluent concentration was recorded for CBUSF (0.22 mg P/L) while the highest TP removal was recorded for MBR (95 ± 3 %). HRCMF delivered the poorest performance (32 ± 26 % TP removal, 1.7 mg P/L average TP effluent), attributed to limited chemical TP binding and solids removal under the conditions tested. Factors affecting P removal performance during the trial were the identification of the optimal coagulant dose to bind soluble P, the formation of solids that can be removed by the separation unit, insufficient reaction time for the coagulation process and the carryover of coagulant into the final effluent. The trials gave valuable insights to address the implementation of new technologies or upgrade existing assets' performance.

The headspace of the bottles had been flushed with 15 different ratios of CO2 and N2 prior to incubation, while they were treated otherwise identically. The results revealed that the CH4 yield increased linearly with higher ratio of CO2 in the flush gas reaching a 30% higher yield at pure CO2 relative to pure N2 headspace conditions. However, a slightly distinct lag is noticeable during the initial phase of the degradation process at high ratios of CO2, hypothesizing a reversible disturbance of the biocenosis. Further experiments and analyses need to be performed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

The influence of headspace flushing on the specific methane (CH4) production of blank samples with just inoculum in Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) tests was studied. The three most common ways were applied: flushing with nitrogen (N2) gas, flushing with a mixture of N2 and CO2 (80/20 v/v), and no flushing. The results revealed that removing the oxygen is crucial to avoid aerobic respiration, which caused both hindered activity of methanogens and loss of methane potential. Furthermore it was demonstrated that 20% of CO2 in the flush gas increased significantly the methane production by over 20% compared to the flushing with pure N2. In order to mimic the same headspace conditions as in full-scale treatment plants, using a flush gas with a similar CO2 concentration as the expected biogas is suggested.
