Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials have been studied in depth during the past two decades due to their unique structure and properties. Transition metal (TM) intercalation of layered materials have been proven as an effective way to introduce new physical properties, such as tunable 2D magnetism, but the direct growth of atomically thin heteroatoms-intercalated layered materials remains untapped. Herein, we directly synthesize various ultrathin heteroatoms-intercalated 2D layered materials (UHI-2DMs) through flux-assisted growth (FAG) approach. Eight UHI-2DMs (V1/3NbS2, Cr1/3NbS2, Mn1/3NbS2, Fe1/3NbS2, Co1/3NbS2, Co1/3NbSe2, Fe1/3TaS2, Fe1/4TaS2) were successfully synthesized. Their thickness can be reduced to the thinnest limit (bilayer 2D material with monolayer intercalated TM), and magnetic ordering can be induced in the synthesized structures. Interestingly, due to the possible anisotropy-stabilized long-range ferromagnetism in Fe1/3TaS2 with weak interlayer coupling, the layer-independent magnetic ordering temperature of Fe1/3TaS2 was revealed by magneto-transport properties. This work establishes a general method for direct synthesis of heteroatom-intercalated ultrathin 2D materials with tunable chemical and physical properties.

Due to the continuous lack of specific background values (BVs) for soil heavy metals in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain in Henan province (HPHP), many researchers have used soil heavy BVs specific to Henan Province (HP) or Fluvisols of China (FC) as reference criteria to assess soil heavy metal pollution. However, spatial differences in the soil heavy metal BVs between HPHP, HP, and FC, as well as within the HPHP, remain uncertain, affecting the reliability of evaluation results. A total of 897 surface soil samples were collected from the HPHP, with 336 and 561 samples collected from the southern and northern parts of the Shaying River, respectively. According to the obtained results, the BVs of soil Hg, As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Ni in the HPHP were 0.064, 6.67, 0.129, 53.24, 19.67, 22.87, 64.00, and 26.25 mg·kg−1, respectively. The BVs of soil Hg and Cd were higher than those in HP, Fluvisols in Henan Province, and FC, showing strong and extremely strong levels. The BVs of other soil heavy metals exhibited slight differences from the reference BVs. On the other hand, the BVs of soil Hg, As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Ni were 0.066, 4.11, 0.130, 56.72, 20.97, 23.31, 59.21, and 24.03 mg·kg−1 in the southern part and 0.061, 7.45, 0.129, 51.92, 18.96, 22.72, 66.96, and 27.16 mg·kg−1 in the northern part of the Shaying River, respectively. In addition, there were no significant differences in the Hg and Cd BVs between the two parts. Cu BVs in the southern part were significantly higher than those observed in the northern part, while the As, Zn, and Ni BVs in the northern part were significantly higher than those revealed in the southern part. In contrast, the Cr and Pb BVs in the northern part were significantly lower than those observed in the southern part.

Background: Vancomycin is a first-line drug for the treatment of MRSA infection. However, overuse of vancomycin can cause bacteria to become resistant, forming resistant strains and making infections more difficult to treat. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of different antibiotics in the treatment of MRSA infections and to compare them, mainly with vancomycin, to find better vancomycin alternatives. Methods: All studies were obtained from the PubMed and Embase databases from inception to 13 April 2023. The three comprehensive indicators of clinical cure success rate, clinical microbiological success rate, and adverse reactions were evaluated, and the clinical cure success rates of three disease types, complex skin and skin structure infections (cSSSIs), complex skin and soft tissue infections (cSSTIs), and pneumonia, were analyzed in subgroups. All statistical analyses were performed using R and STATA 14.0 software for network meta-analysis. Results: A total of 38 trials with 6281 patients were included, and 13 drug treatments were evaluated. For MRSA infections, the results of network meta-analysis showed that the clinical success rates of linezolid, the combination of vancomycin and rifampin, and the combination of minocycline and rifampin were better than that of vancomycin (RR 1.71; 95%-CI 1.45–2.02), (RR 2.46; 95%-CI 1.10–5.49) (RR, 2.77; 95%-CI 1.06–7.21). The success rate of clinical microbiological treatment with vancomycin was inferior to that with telavancin (RR 0.74; 95%-CI 0.55–0.99). Linezolid had a higher rate of adverse reactions than teicoplanin (RR 5.35; 95%-CI 1.10–25.98). Subgroup analysis showed that vancomycin had a lower clinical success rate than linezolid in the treatment of MRSA-induced cSSSIs, cSSTIs, and pneumonia (RR 0.59; 95%-CI 0.44–0.80) (RR 0.55; 95%-CI 0.35–0.89) (RR 0.55; 95%-CI 0.32–0.93). Conclusions: This systematic review and NMA provide a new comparison framework for the clinical treatment of MRSA infection. The NMA suggests that linezolid may be the antibiotic of choice for the treatment of MRSA infections, with the ability to improve clinical and microbiological success rates despite its disadvantage in terms of adverse effects. At the same time, the combination of minocycline and rifampicin may be the most effective drug to treat MRSA-induced cSSSIs, tedizolid may be the best drug to treat MRSA-induced cSSTIs, and the combination of vancomycin and rifampicin may be the most effective treatment for MRSA-induced pneumonia. More high-quality studies are still needed in the future to further identify alternatives to vancomycin. Trial registration: PROSPERO registration number CRD42023416788.

Ptosis is a common ophthalmologic condition, and the diagnosis is primarily based on ocular appearance. The diagnosis of such conditions can be improved using emerging technology such as artificial intelligence-based methods. However, unified data collection and labeling standards have not yet been established. This directly impacts the accuracy of ptosis diagnosis based on appearance alone. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to establish a procedure to obtain and label images to devise a recommendation system for optimal recognition of ptosis based on ocular appearances. This would help to standardize and facilitate data sharing and serve as a guideline for the development and improvisation of algorithms in artificial intelligence for ptosis.

Abstract Objective: To assess the current Na levels in a variety of processed food groups and categories available in the Argentinean market to monitor compliance with the National Law and to compare the current Na content levels with the updated Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) regional targets. Design: Observational cross-sectional study. Setting and Participants: Argentina. Data were collected during March 2022 in the city of Buenos Aires in two of the main supermarket chains. We carried out a systematic survey of pre-packaged food products available in the food supply assessing Na content as reported in nutrition information panels. Results: We surveyed 3997 food products, and the Na content of 760 and 2511 of them was compared with the maximum levels according to the Argentinean law and the regional targets, respectively. All food categories presented high variability of Na content. More than 90 % of the products included in the National Sodium Reduction Law were found to be compliant. Food groups with high median Na, such as meat and fish condiments, leavening flour and appetisers are not included in the National Law. In turn, comparisons with PAHO regional targets indicated that more than 50 % of the products were found to exceed the regional targets for Na. Conclusions: This evidence suggests that it is imperative to update the National Sodium Reduction Law based on regional public health standards, adding new food groups and setting more stringent legal targets.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the application of front-of-package (FOP) labelling regulations to menu labelling in the Canadian restaurant sector by assessing the proportion of menu items that would be required to display the ‘high-in’ FOP symbol if the policy were extended to the restaurant sector. Design: Nutrition information of 18 760 menu items was collected from 141 chain restaurants in Canada. Menu items were evaluated using the mandatory FOP labelling regulations promulgated in Canada Gazette II by Health Canada in July of 2022. Setting: Chain restaurants with ≥20 establishments in Canada. Participants: Canadian chain restaurant menu items including beverages, desserts, entrées, sides and starters. Results: Overall, 77 % of menu items in the Canadian restaurant sector would display a ‘high-in’ FOP symbol. Among these menu items, 43 % would display ‘high-in’ one nutrient, 54 % would display ‘high-in’ two and 3 % would display ‘high-in’ all three nutrients-of-concern. By nutrient, 52 % were ‘high-in’ sodium, and 24 and 47 % were ‘high-in’ total sugars and saturated fat, respectively. Conclusions: Given the poor nutritional quality of restaurant foods, the current regulations, if applied to restaurant foods, would result in most menu items displaying a FOP symbol. Therefore, expanding the Canadian FOP labelling regulations to the restaurant sector can be key to ensuring a healthy food environment for Canadians. Furthermore, menu labelling along with other multi-faceted approaches such as reformulation targets are necessary to improve the dietary intake of Canadians from restaurant foods.

Medical artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technology have rapidly advanced in recent years, and they are now routinely used for image-based diagnosis. China has a massive amount of medical data. However, a uniform criteria for medical data quality have yet to be established. Therefore, this review aimed to develop a standardized and detailed set of quality criteria for medical data collection, storage, annotation, and management related to medical AI. This would greatly improve the process of medical data resource sharing and the use of AI in clinical medicine.

Middle and outer ear diseases are common otological diseases worldwide. Otoscopy and otoendoscopy examinations are essential first steps in the evaluation of patients with otological diseases. Misdiagnosis often occurs when the doctor lacks experience in interpreting the results of otoscopy or otoendoscopy, leading to delays in treatment or complications. Using deep learning to process otoscopy images and developing otoscopic artificial-intelligence-based decision-making systems will become a significant trend in the future. However, the uneven quality of otoscopy images is among the major obstacles to development of such artificial intelligence systems, and no standardized process for data acquisition, and annotation of otoscopy images in intelligent medicine has yet been fully established. The standards for data storage and data management are unified with those of other specialties and are introduced in detail here. This expert recommendation criterion improved and standardized the collection and annotation procedures for otoscopy images and fills the current gap in otologic intelligent medicine; it would thus lay a solid foundation for the standardized collection, storage, and annotation of otoscopy images and the application of training algorithms, and promote the development of automatic diagnosis and treatment for otological diseases. Understanding the regional variations and mechanisms of rural hollowing-out in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) is crucial to guiding regional rural revitalization. However, further quantitative evaluation and analysis are essential to address the issue of rural hollowing-out caused by the decrease in rural population and expansion of residential land in the YRB at different spatio-temporal scales. Based on China’s census data and residential areas extracted from remote sensing images, the rural hollowing-out in the YRB is classified into five types: smart development type (SDT), human–-land recession type (HRT), population loss type (PLT), land expansion type (LET), and human–land–vacant waste type (HLW). Then, the influential features shaping the spatial diversity of rural hollowing-out types are examined, and the feature importance values at different spatio-temporal scales are assessed using the XGBoost model. The results of rural hollowing-out in the YBR indicate that (1) the geographical types of rural hollowing-out in the YRB are dominated by the HRT type and show significant heterogeneity and distribution at different spatio-temporal scales. At different time stages, the number of counties dominated by HRT in lower reaches accounts for 57% of the total counties, whereas the number of counties in the middle reaches is only 37%. Compared to the rural hollowing-out results from 2000 to 2010, the number of counties dominated by PLT and HLW from 2010 to 2020 in the middle reaches increased by 19% and 16%, respectively. (2) Precipitation had a positive effect on the variability of the rural hollowing-out distribution results based on the feature importance values, whereas agricultural productivity had a negative effect and exhibited a decreasing trend. In the entire study area, economic non-agriculturalization had a negative impact, but the topographic relief was positively correlated with the rural hollowing-out results of regional areas, and the intensity of its effect showed an increased trend from 2000 to 2020. (3) The evaluation results in the entire study area show that the main functional type and the distance from provincial capitals are the most important factors affecting rural hollowing out. Compared to other factors, the level of non-agricultural economic development has a greater impact on the spatio-temporal differentiation of rural hollowing types in different Yellow River basins. Given the significant effect of non-agricultural economic development in the evaluation of regional rural hollowing-out, it can provide methodological and indicator references for the evaluation of rural hollowing-out in different regions.

Testicular two-dimensional ultrasound is a testing modality that is often used to evaluate azoospermia and other related diseases. With the continuous development of deep learning in recent years, the combination of deep learning and testicular ultrasound appears unstoppable despite a lack of relevant standards. One of the major problems associated with the digitization of ultrasound images is the uneven quality of data however, and a standardized data source and acquisition process has not yet been developed. Such a standard could fill the current gap, and establish acquisition criteria for ultrasound images of testes during the male reproductive period, including grayscale ultrasound, shear wave elastography, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound. By following these guidelines the quality of testicular ultrasound images would be improved and standardized, which would lay a solid foundation for the standardization of testicular ultrasound images, and assist automated evaluation of testicular spermatogenic function of whole testis in azoospermic males.

In recent years, the incidence of myopia has increased at an alarming rate among children and adolescents in China. The exploration of an effective prevention and control method for myopia is in urgent need. With the development of information technology in the past decade, artificial intelligence with the Internet of Things technology (AIoT) is characterized by strong computing power, advanced algorithm, continuous monitoring, and accurate prediction of long-term progression. Therefore, big data and artificial intelligence technology have the potential to be applied to data mining of myopia etiology and prediction of myopia occurrence and development. More recently, there has been a growing recognition that myopia study involving AIoT needs to undergo a rigorous evaluation to demonstrate robust results.

Abstract Biodegradable organic field‐effect transistors (OFETs) have drawn tremendous attention for potential applications such as green electronic skins, degradable flexible displays, and novel implantable devices. However, it remains a huge challenge to simultaneously achieve high mobility, stable operation and controllable biodegradation of OFETs, because most of the widely used biodegradable insulating materials contain large amounts of hydrophilic groups. Herein, it is firstly proposed fungal‐degradation ultraflexible OFETs based on the crosslinked dextran (C‐dextran) as dielectric layer. The crosslinking strategy effectively eliminates polar hydrophilic groups and improves water and solvent resistance of dextran dielectric layer. The device with spin‐coated 2,7‐dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2‐b][1]benzothiophene (C8‐BTBT) semiconductor and C‐dextran dielectric exhibits the highest mobility up to 7.72 cm2 V−1 s−1, which is higher than all the reported degradable OFETs. Additionally, the device still maintains high performance regardless of in an environment humidity up to 80% or under the extreme bending radius of 0.0125 mm. After completion of their mission, the device can be controllably biodegraded by fungi without any adverse environmental effects, promoting the natural ecological cycles with the concepts of “From nature, for nature”. This work opens up a new avenue for realizing high‐performance biodegradable OFETs, and advances the process of the “green” electrical devices in practical applications.

The micro-hydration degree plays a significant role in the strength of cement-sandy soil mixtures. The present study used cement-fiber-sandy soil mixtures in which the fiber was sourced from waste cotton/linen-blended fabric to investigate the impacts of different levels of fiber content on the hydration mechanisms and micromechanical performance. Experiments using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) were carried out to determine how the component content of the different constituents changed with the fiber content (0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5%) during the microhydration of the mixtures. A comparative analysis of the strength characteristic curves and the tensile strength variations for different groups of reinforced cement-sandy soil mixtures were conducted by performing triaxial shear tests. The results show that the peak unconfined compressive strength of the mixtures gradually increases with the quartz content of the matrix. The compressive strength of the matrix reaches a peak of 1.5938 MPa, an increase of 24.17%, when the cement and fiber contents were 3% and 1.5% (weight), respectively, with a fiber length of 9 mm. This paper has reference values for the green reinforcement of cement-sandy soil mixtures in the development of underground space.

Background: The high prevalence of ocular manifestations (OMs) in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and chronic diseases such as diabetes has become a global health issue. However, there is still a lack of an appropriate ophthalmic diagnostic procedure for the early detection of OMs in this population, leading to the risk of an irreversible visual impairment that substantially affects the quality of life of these patients. Methods: The Guangzhou HIV Infection Study was a retrospective study that enrolled hospitalised HIV-infected patients in Guangzhou between January 2005 and December 2016, period corresponding to the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era in China. We collected data on OMs, systemic diseases, hospitalisation, and demographic characteristics. We classified the patients into 3 groups according to the ophthalmic examination mode they underwent: the non-ophthalmologist examination group (patients hospitalised in 2005–2011 who were only treated by infectious disease physicians), the on-demand ophthalmic examination group (patients hospitalised in 2012–2013 who were referred for a consultation with an ophthalmologist), and the routine ophthalmic examination group (patients hospitalised in 2014–2016 who routinely underwent standard ophthalmic examinations). Binary logistic regression models were used to investigate the factors related to OMs. Findings: A total of 8,743 hospitalised HIV-infected patients were enrolled. The prevalence of detected OMs were 1.5% in the non-ophthalmologist examination group, 1.9% in the on-demand ophthalmic examination group, and 12.8% in the routine ophthalmic examination group. The odds of detection of OMs were highest in the routine ophthalmic examination group (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]=9.24, [95%CI, 6.51–13.12], compared to the non-ophthalmologist examination group). The detection of all types of OMs increased substantially, with keratitis, retinitis and vascular abnormalities increased the most (by 15.8–20.0 times). In the routine examination group, patients who were older than 50 years, males, with medical insurance, and were not resident in Guangzhou, had higher odds to have OMs. Several systemic diseases also increased the odds of OMs, with the highest odds among patients with a cytomegalovirus infection (aOR=5.59, [95%CI, 4.12–7.59]). Patients with retinitis, retinopathy and conjunctivitis had higher odds of having a CD4+ T cell counts less than 200 cells/μL compared to the patients that did not have these referred OMs. Interpretation: The implementation of a routine ophthalmic examination has improved the odds of OM detection by approximately 9 times and increased the diagnosis rates of all types of OMs. Therefore, we encourage all HIV-infected patients to undergo regular ophthalmic examinations. Patients with OMs, especially retinopathy and retinitis, need to be evaluated for immune function (such as CD4+ T cell counts) and systemic diseases.

Scarcity of the antisolvent polymer dielectrics and their poor stability have significantly prevented solution-processed ultraflexible organic transistors from low-temperature, large-scale production for applications in low-cost skin-inspired electronics. Here, we present a novel low-temperature solution-processed PEI-EP polymer dielectric with dramatically enhanced thermal stability, humidity stability, and frequency stability compared with the conventional PVA/c-PVA and c-PVP dielectrics, by incorporating polyethyleneimine PEI as crosslinking sites in nonhydroxyl epoxy EP. The PEI-EP dielectric requires a very low process temperature as low as 70°C and simultaneously possesses the high initial decomposition temperature (340°C) and glass transition temperature (230°C), humidity-resistant dielectric properties, and frequency-independent capacitance. Integrated into the solution-processed C8-BTBT thin-film transistors, the PEI-EP dielectric enables the device stable operation in air within 2 months and in high-humidity environment from 20 to 100% without significant performance degradation. The PEI-EP dielectric transistor array also presents weak hysteresis transfer characteristics, excellent electrical performance with 100% operation rate, high mobility up to 7.98 cm2 V-1 s-1 (1 Hz) and average mobility as high as 5.3 cm2 V-1 s-1 (1 Hz), excellent flexibility with the normal operation at the bending radius down to 0.003 mm, and foldable and crumpling-resistant capability. These results reveal the great potential of PEI-EP polymer as dielectric of low-temperature solution-processed ultraflexible organic transistors and open a new strategy for the development and applications of next-generation low-cost skin electronics.

Rock-like materials often exhibit irregular failure deformation under long-term service conditions, and the deformation and failure of asphalt and concrete materials is a serious problem that leads to subgrade failure. In this study, two different viscous/brittle rock-like materials were prepared by the in situ loading and optical speckle synchronous monitoring test method, and the evolution characteristics of the deformation field were studied during compression. The formation process of the compression deformation localization of rock-like materials and their relationship with stability were analyzed. A quantitative description of the compression deformation stage and localization characteristics of the viscous/brittle rock-like materials is presented. The results can be summarized as follows. At the initial stage of compression, the deformation localization zone of viscous/brittle rock-like materials begins to expand from the middle area to the surrounding area. Preliminary results of the deformation localization of the linear elastic deformation stage were obtained. The failure cloud image is completely formed at the peak, which is consistent with the failure physical map. The deformation process of compression can be quantitatively described using the deformation localization characteristics of rock-like materials.

Medical artificial intelligence (AI) is an important technical asset to support medical supply-side reforms and national development in the big data era. Clinical data from multiple disciplines represent building blocks for the development and application of AI-aided diagnostic and treatment systems based on medical big data. However, the inconsistent quality of these data resources in AI research leads to waste and inefficiencies. Therefore, it is crucial that the field formulates the requirements and content related to data processing as part of the development of intelligent medicine. To promote medical AI research worldwide, the “Belt and Road” International Ophthalmic Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Alliance will establish a series of expert recommendations for data quality in intelligent medicine.

β-Bi2O3/BiVO4/MnxZn1−xFe2O4 (BV/MZF) composite magnetic photocatalyst was first synthesized using the hydrothermal and calcination method. BV/MZF was a mesoporous material with most probable pore size and specific surface area of 18 nm and 17.84 m2/g, respectively. Due to its high saturation magnetization (2.67 emu/g), the BV/MZF composite can be easily separated and recovered from solution under an external magnetic field. The results of photo-decomposition experiments show that the decomposition rate of Rhodamine B (RhB) by BV/MZF can reach 92.6% in 3 h under visible light. After three cycles, BV/MZF can still maintain structural stability and excellent pollutant degradation effect. In addition, analysis of the photocatalytic mechanism of BV/MZF for RhB shows that the p-n heterojunction formed in BV/MZF plays a vital role in its photocatalytic performance. This work has potential application in the future for solving environmental pollution.

We determined the complete mitochondrial genome (GenBank accession number: MG256392) of the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes ussurienusis) farmed in Northeast China and compared it with two previously published mitogenomes, one mitogenome of wild raccoon dog captured in Inner Mongolia of China (GenBank accession number: GU256221) and another mitogenome of Korean raccoon dog(GenBank accession number: KF709435). The N. ussurienusis mitogenome is 16,714 bp long and high similarity of 99.2% and 99.1% with Chinese wide raccoon dogs and Korean raccoon dogs. This study will contribute to understanding genetic divergence between raccoon dogs of N. procyonoides in East Asia.

Aim To investigate the association of floor area ratio (FAR), an indicator of built environments, and myopia onset. Methods This prospective cohort study recruited 136 753 children aged 6-10 years from 108 schools in Shenzhen, China at baseline (2016-2017). Refractive power was measured with non-cycloplegic autorefraction over a 2-year follow-up period. FAR was objectively evaluated using geographical information system technology. Mixed-effects logistic regression models were constructed to examine the association of FAR with a 2-year cumulative incidence of myopia among individuals without baseline myopia; multiple linear regression model, with a 2-year cumulative incidence rate of myopia at each school. Results Of 101 624 non-myopic children (56.3% boys; mean (SE) age, 7.657±1.182 years) included in the study, 26 391 (26.0%) of them developed myopia after 2 years. In the individual-level analysis adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic and greenness factors, an IQR in FAR was associated with a decreased risk of 2-year myopia incidence (OR 0.898, 95% CI 0.866 to 0.932, p<0.001). Similar findings were observed in the analysis additionally adjusted for genetic and behavioural factors (OR 0.821, 95% CI 0.766 to 0.880, p<0.001). In the school-level, an IQR increase in FAR was found to be associated with a 2.0% reduction in the 2-year incidence rate of myopia (95%CI 1.3% to 2.6%, p<0.001). Conclusions Exposure to higher FAR was associated with a decreased myopia incidence, providing insights into myopia prevention through school built environments in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
