1. Optical orientation of excitons and charged carriers in MAPbI$_3$ perovskite single crystals in the orthorhombic phase

Abstract

Optical orientation of exciton and carrier spins by circularly polarized light is the basic phenomenon in the spin physics of semiconductors. Here, we investigate spin orientation in MAPbI3 lead halide perovskite crystals at the cryogenic temperature of 1.6 K, where the material has an orthorhombic crystal structure. The recombination and spin dynamics of excitons and carriers are measured by time-resolved photoluminescence after circularly polarized excitation. The optical orientation of excitons reaches 85\%, which persists within their lifetime of 15-80 ps. This high orientation is maintained for excitation laser detunings from the exciton resonance to higher energies by up to 0.3 eV, then decreases and vanishes above 1.5 eV detuning. This indicates that the Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation mechanism based on inversion symmetry breaking is inactive in MAPbI3 crystals with orthorhombic symmetry. The optical orientation of localized and spatially-separated electrons and holes results in 40\% circular polarization of their emission. Their contributions can be identified from the complex spin beats dynamics in transverse magnetic field. The dynamics analysis gives values of the Land\'e g-factors of 2.83 for electrons and 0.54 for holes. Also, the magnetic-field-induced polarization of excitons and carriers is analyzed in magnetic fields up to 6 T, showing that their spin relaxation times are longer than their lifetimes. Namely, for the excitons, the spin relaxation time exceeds the lifetime by a factor of 6. We model the dynamics of optical orientation degree for cumulative contributions of excitons and carriers and show that the exciton recombination dynamics can control these dynamics. The polarized emission of excitons and localized carriers, produced by their polarization on Zeeman-split levels in magnetic fields, is modeled.

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce a new subclass of close-to-convex harmonic functions. We present a sufficient coefficient condition for a function to be a member of this class. Furthermore, we establish a distortion theorem. These results lay the groundwork for extending the findings to function classes involving higher-order derivatives.

We develop a search algorithm for systems of $q$-difference equations satisfied by Andrews-Gordon type double series. We then couple the search algorithm with Euler's algorithm for finding infinite products to narrow the search space. We exemplify some findings of the algorithm, along with their proofs. Abstract

As clinical evaluations of neuromuscular disorders such as hypertonia mostly rely on perception-based scales, the imprecise subjective ratings make it difficult to accurately monitor treatment progress. To promote objective evaluation, this work used a multi-modal sensing glove in a double-blind study to enable sensitive monitoring of medication effects across 19 participants. The biomechanical measurements from the sensing glove effectively distinguished patient cohorts receiving a baclofen treatment or a placebo with 95% confidence. Consistent monitoring over a two-month period was demonstrated, closely tracking variations in individual responses to treatment. The biomechanical changes were correlated to neural activities as recorded by electromyography, verifying the medication effects. The sensing glove is shown to be a reliable tool for point-of-care settings to facilitate precise evaluation of hypertonia, essential for tailoring individual treatment choices and timely management of chronic symptoms.

5. Mortality Prediction of Pulmonary Embolism Patients with Deep Learning and XGBoost

Abstract

Pulmonary Embolism (PE) is a serious cardiovascular condition that remains a leading cause of mortality and critical illness, underscoring the need for enhanced diagnostic strategies. Conventional clinical methods have limited success in predicting 30-day in-hospital mortality of PE patients. In this study, we present a new algorithm, called PEP-Net, for 30-day mortality prediction of PE patients based on the initial imaging data (CT) that opportunistically integrates a 3D Residual Network (3DResNet) with Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm with patient level binary labels without annotations of the emboli and its extent. Our proposed system offers a comprehensive prediction strategy by handling class imbalance problems, reducing overfitting via regularization, and reducing the prediction variance for more stable predictions. PEP-Net was tested in a cohort of 193 volumetric CT scans diagnosed with Acute PE, and it demonstrated a superior performance by significantly outperforming baseline models (76-78\%) with an accuracy of 94.5\% (+/-0.3) and 94.0\% (+/-0.7) when the input image is either lung region (Lung-ROI) or heart region (Cardiac-ROI). Our results advance PE prognostics by using only initial imaging data, setting a new benchmark in the field. 6. Effect of crystal symmetry of lead halide perovskites on the optical orientation of excitons

Abstract

The great variety of lead halide perovskite semiconductors represents an outstanding platform for studying crystal symmetry effects on the spin-dependent properties. Access to them is granted through optical orientation of exciton and carrier spins by circularly polarized photons. Here, the exciton spin polarization is investigated at $1.6$\,K cryogenic temperature in four lead halide perovskite crystals with different symmetries: (almost) cubic in FA$_{0.9}$Cs$_{0.1}$PbI$_{2.8}$Br$_{0.2}$ and FAPbBr$_3$, and orthorhombic in MAPbI$_3$ and CsPbBr$_3$. Giant optical orientation of 85\% is found for the excitons in FA$_{0.9}$Cs$_{0.1}$PbI$_{2.8}$Br$_{0.2}$, MAPbI$_3$, and CsPbBr$_3$, while it amounts to 20\% in FAPbBr$_3$. For all studied crystals, the optical orientation is robust to detuning of the laser photon energy from the exciton resonance, remaining constant for high energy detunings up to 0.3~eV, above which it continuously decreases to zero for detunings exceeding 1~eV. No acceleration of the spin relaxation for excitons with large kinetic energy is found in the cubic and orthorhombic crystals. This evidences the absence of the Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation mechanism, which is based on the Rashba-Dresselhaus splitting of spin states at finite $k$-vectors. This indicates that the spatial inversion symmetry is maintained in perovskite crystals, independent of the cubic or orthorhombic phase.

7. Impact of Surface Reflections in Maritime Obstacle Detection

Abstract

Maritime obstacle detection aims to detect possible obstacles for autonomous driving of unmanned surface vehicles. In the context of maritime obstacle detection, the water surface can act like a mirror on certain circumstances, causing reflections on imagery. Previous works have indicated surface reflections as a source of false positives for object detectors in maritime obstacle detection tasks. In this work, we show that surface reflections indeed adversely affect detector performance. We measure the effect of reflections by testing on two custom datasets, which we make publicly available. The first one contains imagery with reflections, while in the second reflections are inpainted. We show that the reflections reduce mAP by 1.2 to 9.6 points across various detectors. To remove false positives on reflections, we propose a novel filtering approach named Heatmap Based Sliding Filter. We show that the proposed method reduces the total number of false positives by 34.64% while minimally affecting true positives. We also conduct qualitative analysis and show that the proposed method indeed removes false positives on the reflections. Abstract

We report the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of J$/\psi$ at forward rapidity ($1.2<|\eta|<2.2$) in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data were collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. The second Fourier coefficient ($v_2$) of the azimuthal distribution of $J/\psi$ is determined as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_T$) using the event-plane method. The measurements were performed for several selections of collision centrality: 0\%--50\%, 10\%--60\%, and 10\%-40\%. We find that in all cases the values of $v_2(p_T)$, which quantify the elliptic flow of J$/\psi$, are consistent with zero. The results are consistent with measurements at midrapidity, indicating no significant elliptic flow of the J$/\psi$ within the quark-gluon-plasma medium at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV., Comment: 369 authors from 72 institutions, 12 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. Abstract

We present the first forward-rapidity measurements of elliptic anisotropy of open-heavy-flavor muons at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measurements are based on data samples of Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. Abstract

We study the problem of finding curves of minimum pointwise-maximum arc-length derivative of curvature, here simply called curves of minimax spirality, among planar curves of fixed length with prescribed endpoints and tangents at the endpoints. We consider the case when simple bounds (constraints) are also imposed on the curvature along the curve. The curvature at the endpoints may or may not be specified. We prove via optimal control theory that the optimal curve is some concatenation of Euler spiral arcs, circular arcs, and straight line segments. When the curvature is not constrained (or when the curvature constraint does not become active), an optimal curve is only made up of a concatenation of Euler spiral arcs, unless the oriented endpoints lie in a line segment or a circular arc of the prescribed length, in which case the whole curve is either a straight line segment or a circular arc segment, respectively. Abstract

The $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ charmonium states, composed of $c\bar{c}$ quark pairs and known since the 1970s, are widely believed to serve as ideal probes to test quantum chromodynamics in high-energy hadronic interactions. However, there is not yet a complete understanding of the charmonium-production mechanism. Recent measurements of $J/\psi$ production as a function of event charged-particle multiplicity at the collision energies of both the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) show enhanced $J/\psi$ production yields with increasing multiplicity. One potential explanation for this type of dependence is multiparton interactions (MPI). We carry out the first measurements of self-normalized $J/\psi$ yields and the $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio at both forward and backward rapidities as a function of self-normalized charged-particle multiplicity in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. In addition, detailed {\sc pythia} studies tuned to RHIC energies were performed to investigate the MPI impacts. We find that the PHENIX data at RHIC are consistent with recent LHC measurements and can only be described by {\sc pythia} calculations that include MPI effects. The forward and backward $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio, which serves as a unique and powerful approach to study final-state effects on charmonium production, is found to be less dependent on the charged-particle multiplicity., Comment: 301 authors from 69 institutions, 8 pages, 3 figures. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review D Letters. 12. 'I Wanted to Grow up to Be Strong Enough to Do All the Work and Help My Mother': Why Do Children Want to Grow up Rapid?

Abstract

A supportive environment is critical for individuals to protect their developmentally bio-psycho-socio-emotional health. This research was carried out to determine the possible causes of "desire for rapid growth", which is frequently seen in childhood, and the emotional states caused by "desire for rapid growth" in children, were carried out in a basic qualitative research design. The research participants are 60 undergraduate students who are preschool pre-service teachers. Within the scope of the study, data were collected through focus group discussion and documents, and the study's results were reached through content analysis, one of the qualitative analysis methods. Based on the study findings, participant showed long-term effects such as emotional emptiness, nostalgia, permanent emotional and social impact, and lastly, the "desire for rapid growth" is experienced, It was concluded that they had feelings of worthlessness, inferiority, anger, stuckness, and insecurity. In addition, among all participants, 56 has at least experienced once in their childhood the "desire for rapid growth".

Abstract

In this work, we study the system identification problem for parameterized non-linear systems using basis functions under adversarial attacks. Motivated by the LASSO-type estimators, we analyze the exact recovery property of a non-smooth estimator, which is generated by solving an embedded $\ell_1$-loss minimization problem. First, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the well-specifiedness of the estimator and the uniqueness of global solutions to the underlying optimization problem. Next, we provide exact recovery guarantees for the estimator under two different scenarios of boundedness and Lipschitz continuity of the basis functions. The non-asymptotic exact recovery is guaranteed with high probability, even when there are more severely corrupted data than clean data. Finally, we numerically illustrate the validity of our theory. Abstract

We study the Hanle and spin polarization recovery effects on resident electrons in a monolayer MoSe$_2$ on EuS. We demonstrate that localized electrons provide the main contribution to the spin dynamics signal at low temperatures below 15~K for small magnetic fields of only a few mT. The spin relaxation of these electrons is determined by random effective magnetic fields due to a contact spin interaction, namely the hyperfine interaction with the nuclei in MoSe$_2$ or the exchange interaction with the magnetic ions of the EuS film. From the magnetic field angular dependence of the spin polarization we evaluate the anisotropy of the intervalley electron $g$-factor and the spin relaxation time. The non-zero in-plane $g$-factor $|g_x|\approx 0.1$, the value of which is comparable to its dispersion, is attributed to randomly localized electrons in the MoSe$_2$ layer., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

20. General Scintillation for Gaussian Beam Propagating through Oceanic Turbulence and UWOC System Performance Evaluation

Abstract

In this paper, we derive a general and exact closed-form expression of scintillation index (SI) for a Gaussian beam propagating through weak oceanic turbulence, based on the general oceanic turbulence optical power spectrum (OTOPS) and the Rytov theory. Our universal expression not only includes existing Rytov variances but also accounts for actual cases where the Kolmogorov microscale is non-zero. The correctness and accuracy of our derivation are verified through comparison with the published work under identical conditions. By utilizing our derived expressions, we analyze the impact of various beam, propagation and oceanic turbulence parameters on both SI and bit error rate (BER) performance of underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems. Numerical results demonstrate that the relationship between the Kolmogorov microscale and SI is nonlinear. Additionally, considering that certain oceanic turbulence parameters are related to depth, we use temperature and salinity data from Argo buoy deployed in real oceans to investigate the dependence of SI on depth. Our findings will contribute to the design and optimization of UWOC systems.

Abstract

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. 39. The Effect of STEM and STEM-Based Robotic Activities on the Development of Students' Perceptions of Mental Risk-Taking and Its Predictors and Their Inquiry Skills in Science Learning

Abstract

The research explores the effect of STEM and STEM-based robotic activities on the development of students' perceptions of mental risk-taking and its predictors and their perceptions of inquiry learning skills related to science. A mixed method was applied in the research. Its sample consisted of 35 students in a high school of the Ministry of National Education in a medium-scale province of the Eastern Anatolia Region between the 2017-2018 educational year. The Scale for Perceptions of Mental Risk-taking in Science Learning and Its Predictors (SPMRSLIP) and the Scale for Perception of Inquiry Learning Skills for Science (SPILSS) were applied to obtain the quantitative data in the research. In addition, the focus group interview was held. The STEM and STEM-based robotic activities have been performed with the students for 14 weeks. In the findings obtained at the end of the research, no significant difference was determined between the perception pre-test and post-test scores related to mental risk-taking and its predictors in science learning. However, difference was found in the dimension of interest. It was found that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores in the inquiry learning skills perception scale for science and the qualitative findings also supported this result. According to the results, it can be recommended that STEM and Robotic educations should be given in other grades.

Abstract

In this paper, a discrete-time I&I-based adaptive IDA-PBC controller for uncertain nonlinearly parameterized port-controlled Hamiltonian systems (PCH), where the parameter uncertainties are assumed in the energy function, is constructed. A proper formulation for the uncertain system dynamics is established where the uncertainties appear in nonlinearly parameterized form in the gradient of the Hamiltonian function. The adaptive IDA-PBC controller is constructed considering this formulation. For the adaptation mechanism of the IDA-PBC controller, a discrete-time parameter estimator is derived based on the immersion and invariance (I&I) approach. A structure for a free design function in the I&I-based estimator is proposed including some other free design functions. If these free design functions are selected to satisfy some conditions, derived in this paper, the Lyapunov asymptotic stability of the estimator dynamics is guaranteed. Besides, assuming these conditions are satisfied, local asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system, in a sufficiently large set is shown. The proposed method is applied to the two physical system examples and the performance of the adaptive controller is tested by simulation. It is demonstrated that the performance of the certain IDA-PBC controller is maintained by the adaptive IDA-PBC controller successfully., Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

"How does the person in the bounding box feel?" Achieving human-level recognition of the apparent emotion of a person in real world situations remains an unsolved task in computer vision. Facial expressions are not enough: body pose, contextual knowledge, and commonsense reasoning all contribute to how humans perform this emotional theory of mind task. In this paper, we examine two major approaches enabled by recent large vision language models: 1) image captioning followed by a language-only LLM, and 2) vision language models, under zero-shot and fine-tuned setups. We evaluate the methods on the Emotions in Context (EMOTIC) dataset and demonstrate that a vision language model, fine-tuned even on a small dataset, can significantly outperform traditional baselines. Abstract

We investigate a quantum Otto engine with a quantum Ising spin glass as the working medium to explore the scaling behavior of work output and thermodynamic performance concerning system size, particularly near the critical point. Specifically, we explore the two operating modes of the Otto engine, namely the heat engine and refrigerator modes. We observe a double-peaked structure in the heat engine regime, leading to superlinear scaling in both work output and thermodynamic performance near the critical point. Additionally, in the refrigerator regime, superlinear scaling in refrigerator efficiency can be achieved at high and low temperatures, significantly outperforming models with uniform Ising interactions. These findings suggest that disorder and frustration in quantum Ising spin-glass systems could significantly impact thermodynamic performance in quantum heat engines and refrigerators, potentially opening up new avenues for improvement., Comment: 11 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

We consider the problem of finding curves of minimum pointwise-maximum curvature, i.e., curves of minimax curvature, among planar curves of fixed length with prescribed endpoints and tangents at the endpoints. We reformulate the problem in terms of optimal control and use the maximum principle, as well as some geometrical arguments, to produce a classification of the types of solutions. Using the classification, we devise a numerical method which reduces the infinite-dimensional optimization problem to a finite-dimensional problem with just six variables. The solution types, together with some further observations on optimality, are illustrated via numerical examples.

Abstract

As the evolution of wireless communication progresses towards 6G networks, extreme bandwidth communication (EBC) emerges as a key enabler to meet the ambitious key performance indicator set for this next-generation technology. 6G aims for peak data rates of 1 Tb/s, peak spectral efficiency of 60 b/s/Hz, maximum bandwidth of 100 GHz, and mobility support up to 1000 km/h, while maintaining a high level of security. The capability of 6G to manage enormous data volumes introduces heightened security vulnerabilities, such as jamming attacks, highlighting the critical need for in-depth research into jamming in EBC. Understanding these attacks is vital for developing robust countermeasures, ensuring 6G networks can maintain their integrity and reliability amidst these advanced threats. Recognizing the paramount importance of security in 6G applications, this survey paper explores prevalent jamming attacks and the corresponding countermeasures in EBC technologies such as millimeter wave, terahertz, free-space optical, and visible light communications. By comprehensively reviewing the literature on jamming in EBC, this survey paper aims to provide a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, and policymakers involved in the development and deployment of 6G networks. Understanding the nuances of jamming in different EBC technologies is essential for devising robust security mechanisms and ensuring the success of 6G communication systems in the face of emerging threats.

Abstract

In this study, we deal with non-degenerate translators of the mean curvature flow in the well-known hyperbolic Einstein's static universe. We classify translators foliated by horospheres and rotationally invariant ones, both space-like and time-like. For space-like translators, we show a uniqueness theorem as well as a result to extend an isometry of the boundary of the domain to the whole translator, under simple conditions. As an application, we obtain a characterization of the the bowl when the boundary is a ball, and of certain translators foliated by horospheres whose boundary is a rectangle.

Abstract

This study develops a deep learning-based automated system for detecting and segmenting earthquake-induced asphalt cracks, offering a rapid and reliable solution for post-disaster road condition assessments. Unlike traditional manual inspections, which are time-consuming and error-prone, our approach leverages advanced segmentation techniques to ensure accurate, pixel-level classification of various crack types. The main challenge of this study was determining the damage caused to highways by earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 7.0, which occur approximately once every 200 years. The most crucial step in the automatic detection of these damages is the reliable preparation of a high-accuracy dataset. To achieve this, pixel-based labels were created by experts in the construction field by analyzing each pixel value. Following two major earthquakes, a unique dataset for segmenting roadway deterioration was created through intensive and detailed studies. This study aims to present the performance results of popular deep learning-based segmentation models in an unbiased manner, providing a feasible infrastructure for future real-time applications. The innovative aspect of this research lies in the creation of a unique post-earthquake dataset, collected and labeled from highways affected by the February 6, 2023 earthquakes in Turkey (Mw = 7.7 and Mw = 7.6). Deep learning models, including SegNet, Attention SegNet, U-Net, FCN (8s), and DeepLab, were trained and tested on this dataset. Among these, the SegNet model achieved the best performance with an average accuracy of 86.72%, precision of 92.99%, and sensitivity of 78.45%.
