6. Improvement of Asymmetric Reactions via Remote Electronic Tuning of N‐Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysts.

Abstract

Aminoindanol‐derived N‐heterocyclic carbene catalysts have been widely used to achieve highly enantioselective reactions. Recently, substitution at the indane moiety of the catalysts has been found to have a great impact on the outcome of some reactions, even though the substituted position is distant from the carbene catalytic center. Especially, the introduction of an electron‐withdrawing group improves the yield and enantioselectivity. This review provides an overview of recent reports on the improvement of N‐heterocyclic‐carbene‐catalyzed asymmetric reactions by introducing electron‐withdrawing remote substituents. Abstract

This Document, "Guidelines for personal exposure monitoring of chemicals" ("this Guideline"), has been prepared by "The Committee for Personal Exposure Monitoring" ("the Committee") of the Expert Division of Occupational Hygiene & Ergonomics, Japan Society for Occupational Health. Considering the background of the growing importance of personal exposure monitoring in risk assessment and the need to prepare for the introduction of monitoring using personal samplers from an administrative perspective in recent years, the Committee was organized in November 2012. The Committee has prepared this Guideline as a "practical guideline" for personal exposure monitoring, so as to offer proposals and recommendations to the members of the Japan Society for Occupational Health and to society in general. The scope of this Guideline covers all chemical substances and all related workplaces regarded as targets for general assessment and the management of risk. It thus is not to be considered to comment on legal regulations and methodology. The main text provides the basic methods and concepts of personal exposure monitoring, while 31 "Appendices" are provided in this Guideline throughout the series; technical descriptions, statistical bases, and actual workplace examples are provided in these appendices, to assist better understanding. The personal exposure monitoring described as per this Guideline is equivalent to an "expert-centered basic method to reasonably proceed with the assessment and management of risk at workplaces." It is considered that practicing and expanding on this method will significantly contribute in reforming the overall framework of occupational hygiene management in Japan.

Abstract

Induction of nPA release in human peripheral blood lymphocytes by [deamino-[Cys.sup.1],D-[Arg.sup.8]-vasopressin (dDAVP). Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 287: E970-E976, 2004. First published June 15, 2004; doi:10.1152/ajpendo.00027.2003. --[deamino-[Cys.sup.1],D-[Arg.sup.8]-vasopressin (dDAVP), known to be an arginine vasopressin (AVP) [V.sub.2] receptor agonist, is an agent that increases fibrinolytic activity levels in plasma after its infusion into the human body. However. mechanisms underlying an increase and exact localization of the extrarenal dDAVP-responsive [V.sub.2] receptor remain unclarified. Two AVP receptors, [V.sub.1a] and [V.sub.2], and a related oxytocin (OT) receptor were found u) be expressed in human lymphocytes. Furthermore, we found an increase of fibrinolytic activity in the medium of peripheral lymphocytes obtained from human volunteers less than 20 min after dDAVP infusion. The increased activity was also detected in the medium after incubating the lymphocytes in the presence of dDAVP in vitro, being highest at 20 min after the incubation. In accord with the increased fibrinolytic activity, the levels of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) in the medium were also increased. However, there was no significant difference of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), pro-uPA, and tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) concentrations in the medium between dDAVP treatment and control. When lymphocytes were preincubated with a [V.sub.2] receptor antagonist [[Adamantaneacetyl.sup.1],O-Et-D[Tyr.sup.2], [Val.sup.4], [Aminobutyryl.sup.6], [Arg.sup.8,9]]-vasopressin, the dDAVP-induced uPA in crease was diminished. In contrast, preincubation with a [V.sub.1] receptor antagonist, [[beta]-Mercapto-[beta],[[beta]-cyclopentamethylenepropionyl.sup.1], O-Me-[Tyr.sup.2], [Arg.sup.8]]-vasopressin, prior to dDAVP treatment resulted in a greater increase of the uPA concentration in the medium than with the dDAVP treatment alone. Thus it was suggested that dDAVP may induce uPA release from human lymphocytes via [V.sub.2] receptor-mediated reaction, and also via cross-talk between [V.sub.1] and [V.sub.2] receptors. arginine vasopressin; plasminogen activator; urokinase-type plasminogen activator; protease release

Abstract

Results indicate that BaTiO(sub)3 mesocrystals show a blueshift in the optical band gap whereas SrBi(sub)2 Ta(sub)2O(sub)9 mesocrystals exhibit increase in the optical band gap consequent of their reduced size. Data further show that both crystals show a decrease in the dielectric constant temperature.

Abstract

Desmopressin induces relaxation of rat aortic strips with intact endothelium. This relaxation is inhibited when an antagonist of nitrous oxide synthesis is present. These results suggest that desmopressin acts via activation of the nitrous oxide synthetic mechanism. Further, desmopressin interacts with a V1-like receptor on the endothelial surface although it is highly specific for V2 receptors. Hemoglobin inhibits desmopressin-induced vasorelaxation. Superoxide dismutase, on the other hand, potentiates the relaxing effects of desmopressin.

Abstract

A response to Scott's criticism of the earlier paper by Kohiki et al. is presented. In particular the suggestion that there is no evidence for a very large eV shift in the apparent band gap of strontium bismuth tantalate is refuted.
