Abstract

The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider at KEK, Tsukuba, Japan has successfully started taking data with the full detector in March 2019. Belle II is a luminosity frontier experiment of the new generation to search for physics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles, from precision measurements of a huge number of B and charm mesons and tau leptons. In order to read out the events at a high rate from the seven subdetectors of Belle II, we adopt a highly unified readout system, including a unified trigger timing distribution system (TTD), a unified high speed data link system (Belle2link), and a common backend system to receive Belle2link data. Each subdetector frontend readout system has a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) in which unified firmware components of the TTD receiver and Belle2link transmitter are embedded. The system is designed for data taking at a trigger rate up to 30 kHz with a dead-time fraction of about 1% in the frontend readout system. The trigger rate is still much lower than our design. However, the background level is already high due to the initial vacuum condition and other accelerator parameters, and it is the most limiting factor of the accelerator and detector operation. Hence the occupancy and radiation effects to the frontend electronics are rather severe, and they cause various kind of instabilities. Abstract

The original Belle II HLT framework was formally upgraded replacing the old IPC based ring buffer with the ZeroMQ data transport to overcome the unexpected IPC locking problem. The new framework has been working stably in the beam run so far, but it lacks the capability to recover the processing fault without stopping the on-going data taking. In addition, the compatibility with the offline framework (basf2) was lost which was maintained in the original. In order to solve these, an improved core processing framework is developed based on original basf2, while keeping the existing ZeroMQ data transport between the servers unchanged. A new core framework zmq-basf2 is developed with a lock-free 1-to-N and N-to-1 data transport using the ZeroMQ IPC socket so that it keeps a 100% compatibility with the original ring-buffer based framework. When a processing fault occurs, the affected faulty event is salvaged from the input buffer and sent directly to the output using the ZeroMQ broadcast. The terminated process is automatically restarted without stopping data taking. This contribution describes the detail of the improved Belle II HLT framework with the result of the performance test in the real Belle II DAQ data flow.

Abstract

The backend of the Belle II data acquisition system consists of a high-level trigger system, online storage, and an express-reconstruction system for online data processing. The high-level trigger system was updated to use the ZeroMQ networking library from the old ring buffer and TCP/IP socket, and the new system is successfully operated. However, the online storage and express-reconstruction system use the old type of data transportation. For future maintainability, we expand the same ZeroMQ library-based system to the online storage and express-reconstruction system. At the same time, we introduce two more updates in the backend system. First, online side raw data output becomes compressed ROOT format which is the official format of the Belle II data. The update helps to reduce the bandwidth of the online to offline data transfer and offline-side computing resource usage for data format conversion and compression. Second, high-level trigger output-based event selection is included in the online storage. The event selection allows more statistics of data quality monitoring from the express-reconstruction system. In the presentation, we show the description and test result of the upgrade before applying it to the beam operation and data taking.

Abstract

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is caused by autoreactive T cells that recognize pancreatic islet antigens and destroy insulin-producing β-cells. This attack results from a breakdown in tolerance for self-antigens, which is controlled by ectopic antigen expression in the thymus and pancreatic lymph nodes (PLNs). The autoantigens known to be involved include a set of islet proteins, such as insulin, GAD65, IA-2, and ZnT8. In an attempt to identify additional antigenic proteins, we performed an expression-based genome-wide association study using microarray data from 118 arrays of the thymus and PLNs of T1D mice. We ranked all 16,089 protein-coding genes by the likelihood of finding repeated differential expression and the degree of tissue specificity for pancreatic islets. The top autoantigen candidate was vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP). T-cell proliferation assays showed stronger T-cell reactivity to VDBP compared with control stimulations. Higher levels and frequencies of serum anti-VDBP autoantibodies (VDBP-Abs) were identified in patients with T1D (n = 331) than in healthy control subjects (n = 77). Serum vitamin D levels were negatively correlated with VDBP-Ab levels in patients in whom T1D developed during the winter. Immunohistochemical localization revealed that VDBP was specifically expressed in α-cells of pancreatic islets. We propose that VDBP could be an autoantigen in T1D.

The familial aggregation of this disease highlights the involvement of genetic factors in its pathogeny. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify AgP-related genes in a Japanese population, and the lipid metabolism-related gene, lipase-a, lysosomal acid type (LIPA), was suggested as an AgP candidate gene. However, there is no report about the expression and function(s) of LIPA in periodontal tissue. Hence, we studied the involvement of how LIPA and its single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs143793106 in AgP by functional analyses of LIPA and its SNP in human periodontal ligament (HPDL) cells. Materials and Methods: GWAS was performed using the genome database of Japanese AgP patients, and the GWAS result was confirmed using Sanger sequencing. We examined the mRNA expression level of LIPA and the protein expression level of the encoded protein lysosomal acid lipase (LAL) in periodontium-composing cells using conventional and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and western blotting, respectively. Lentiviral vectors expressing LIPA wild-type (LIPA WT) and LIPA SNP rs143793106 (LIPA mut) were transfected into HPDL cells. Western blotting was performed to confirm the transfection. LAL activity of transfected HPDL cells was determined using the lysosomal acid lipase activity assay. Transfected HPDL cells were cultured in mineralization medium. During the cytodifferentiation of transfected HPDL cells, mRNA expression of calcification-related genes, alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) activity and calcified nodule formation were assessed using real-time PCR, ALPase assay, and alizarin red staining, respectively. Results: The GWAS study identified 11 AgP-related candidate genes, including LIPA SNP rs143793106. The minor allele frequency of LIPA SNP rs143793106 in AgP patients was higher than that in healthy subjects. LIPA mRNA and LAL protein were expressed in HPDL cells; furthermore, they upregulated the cytodifferentiation of HPDL cells. LAL activity was lower in LIPA SNP-transfected HPDL cells during cytodifferentiation than that in LIPA WT-transfected HPDL cells. In addition, ALPase activity, calcified nodule formation, and calcification-related gene expression levels were lower during cytodifferentiation in LIPA SNP-transfected HPDL cells than those in LIPA WT-transfected HPDL cells. Conclusion: LIPA, identified as an AgP-related gene in a Japanese population, is expressed in HPDL cells and is involved in regulating cytodifferentiation of HPDL cells. LIPA SNP rs143793106 suppressed cytodifferentiation of HPDL cells by decreasing LAL activity, thereby contributing to the development of AgP.

Abstract

Physical review / D 107, L031103 (2023). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.107.L031103, We report on a measurement of the $\Omega_c^0$ lifetime using $\Omega_c^0 \to \Omega^-\pi^+$ decays reconstructed in $e^+e^-\to c\bar{c}$ data collected by the Belle II experiment and corresponding to $207~{\rm fb^{-1}}$ of integrated luminosity. The result, $\rm\tau(\Omega_c^0)=243\pm48( stat)\pm11(syst)~fs$, agrees with recent measurements indicating that the $\Omega_c^0$ is not the shortest-lived weakly decaying charmed baryon., Published by Inst., Woodbury, NY

Abstract

Zao Wou-Ki (1921-2013) fue un pintor chino reconocido internacionalmente. Para alejarse del convencionalismo del arte chino decidió instalarse en París, pero tras conocer la obra de Paul Cézanne y Paul Klee, Zao se reconcilió con la tradición china, con el signo y el qui como elementos clave en su obra. Cuando llegó a París Zao conoció a muchos artistas emergentes que dejarían huella en la Historia de Arte y que serían impulsores de su propio camino artístico, contribuyendo a la recuperación de sus raíces. Hoy nadie ha abordado en profundidad este nexo, motivo por el cual este trabajo se postula como una investigación pionera en la materia. El hecho de que Zao trabajara con numerosos poetas, tras su colaboración con Henri Michaux, nos remite al principio chino de coincidencia entre el poema y la pintura que subyace en su creación, por lo que, en este artículo, vamos a centrarnos en estudiar su colaboración con los poetas para investigar su arte y vincularlo con estudios filológicos sobre poesía. De otra parte, estudiaremos el concepto de qui en el espacio pictórico chino, ya que Zao recogió la idea de Pierre Soulages, que compartía la idea del espacio y la luz con Zao. Zao Wou-Ki (1921-2013) was a Chinese painter with a universal reputation. Because of the conventionalism of art in China, he decided to settle in Paris. It is known that there he started thanks to the art of Cézanne and Klee, and Zao began to sublimate the Chinese tradition: the sign and the qui as his style in his work, but we can guess that there is something more. When he arrived in Paris, got to meet many emerging artists who would leave their mark on the History of Art. They must be the pointers of the artistic path. They also helped him to recover his root in his art through collaboration, but there is not much research done on that. The fact that Zao worked to dedicate the works to numerous poets after the collaboration with Henri Michaux reminds us of the Chinese aesthetic coincidence between poem and painting. We analyze his collaborations with poets to investigate such a concept in his art. Another part to develop the qui, the Chinese pictorial space, we consider that Zao took the spark from Pierre Soulages. Soulages shared the idea of space and light with Zao, so his dialogues are analyzed.
