Abstract

We show that an equivariantly embedded Hermitian symmetric space in a projective space, which contains neither a projective space nor a hyperquadric as a component, is characterized by their fundamental forms as a local submanifold of the projective space. Using some invariant-theoretic properties of the fundamental forms and Se-ashi's work on linear differential equations of finite type, we reduce the proof to the vanishing of certain Spencer cohomology groups. Abstract

Bacteria commonly communicate with each other by a cell-to-cell signalling mechanism known as quorum sensing (QS). Recent studies have shown that the Las QS autoinducer N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone (3-oxo-[C.sub.12]-HSL) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa performs a variety of functions not only in intraspecies communication, but also in interspecies and interkingdom interactions. In this study, we report the effects of Pseudomonas 3-oxo-[C.sub.12]-HSL on the growth and suppression of virulence factors in other bacterial species that frequently co-exist with Ps. aeruginosa in nature. It was found that 3-oxo-[C.sub.12]-HSL, but not its analogues, suppressed the growth of Legionella pneumophila in a dose-dependent manner. However, 3-oxo-[C.sub.12]-HSL did not exhibit a growth-suppressive effect on Serratia marcescens, Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, Alcaligenes faecalis and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. A concentration of 50 [micro]M 3-oxo-[C.sub.12]-HSL completely inhibited the growth of L. pneumophila. Additionally, a significant suppression of biofilm formation was demonstrated in L. pneumophila exposed to 3-oxo-[C.sub.12]-HSL. Our results suggest that the Pseudomonas QS autoinducer 3-oxo-[C.sub.12]-HSL exerts both bacteriostatic and virulence factor-suppressive activities on L. pneumophila alone.

Abstract

The accumulation of certain species of bacteria in the intestine is involved in both tissue homeostasis and immune-mediated pathologies. The host mechanisms involved in controlling intestinal colonization with commensal bacteria are poorly understood. We observed that under specific pathogen--free or germ-free conditions, intragastric administration of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, or Lactobacillus gasseri resulted in increased colonization of the small intestine and bacterial translocation in mice lacking Cd1d, an MHC class I--like molecule, compared with WT mice. In contrast, activation of Cd1d-restricted T cells (NKT cells) with [alpha]-galactosylceramide caused diminished intestinal colonization with the same bacterial strains. We also found prominent differences in the composition of intestinal microbiota, including increased adherent bacteria, in Cd1d-/- mice in comparison to WT mice under specific pathogen--free conditions. Germ-free Cd1d-/- mice exhibited a defect in Paneth cell granule ultrastructure and ability to degranulate after bacterial colonization. In vitro, NKT cells were shown to induce the release of lysozyme from intestinal crypts. Abstract

The Western dietary pattern appears to confer diabetes risk, but the role of dietary patterns in Asian populations remains unclear. We investigated the association between major dietary patterns and the glucose tolerance status of Japanese men. Abnormalities included impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, and type 2 diabetes. Subjects were 2106 Japanese men who were administered a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test at their preretirement health check-ups. Information about diet was obtained using a 74-item FFQ before the test. Three dietary patterns were generated by factor analysis: 1) a high-dairy, high-fruit and -vegetable, high-starch, low- alcohol pattern; 2) an animal food pattern; and 3) a Japanese pattern. We used logistic regression analysis to estimate odds ratios (OR) with adjustment for potential confounding variables. A significant inverse association was found for the high-dairy, high-fruit and -vegetable, high-starch, low-alcohol pattern (P for trend < 0.0001); the OR of having a glucose tolerance abnormality (impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, or type 2 diabetes) for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quartiles were 0.80 (95% CI = 0.62-1.04), 0.71 (95% CI = 0.54-0.92), and 0.51 (95% CI = 0.38-0.67), respectively, compared with the lowest quartile. The inverse association was consistent for each glucose tolerance abnormality as well as across subgroups stratified by risk factors for diabetes. The Japanese dietary pattern was positively associated with impaired glucose tolerance (P for trend = 0.048). A dietary pattern characterized by frequent consumption of dairy products and fruits and vegetables but low alcohol intake may be associated with a decreased risk of developing a glucose tolerance abnormality.
