We study quantum field theories with boundary by utilizing non-invertible symmetries. We consider three kinds of boundary conditions of the four dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory at the critical point as examples. The weights of the elements on the boundary is determined so that these boundary conditions are related by the Kramers-Wannier-Wegner (KWW) duality. In other words, it is required that the KWW duality defects ending on the boundary is topological. Moreover, we obtain the ratios of the hemisphere partition functions with these boundary conditions; this result constrains the boundary renormalization group flows under the assumption of the conjectured g-theorem in four dimensions., Comment: 18 pages, 19 figures: v2: references and comments added

We consider the phase structure of the linear quiver gauge theory, using the 't Hooft anomaly matching condition. This theory is characterized by the length $K$ of the quiver diagram. When $K$ is even, the symmetry and its anomaly are the same as those of massless QCD. Therefore, one can expect that the spontaneous symmetry breaking similar to the chiral symmetry breaking occurs. On the other hand, when $K$ is odd, the anomaly matching condition is satisfied by the massless composite fermions. We also consider the thermal partition function under the twisted boundary conditions. When $K$ is even, from the anomaly at finite temperature, we estimate the relation between the critical temperatures associated with the confinement/deconfinement and the breaking of the global symmetry. We consider SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ action on quantum field theories with U(1) subsystem symmetry in five dimensions. This is an analog of the SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ action considered in arXiv:hep-th/0307041. We show that the exotic level 1 BF theory and the exotic level 1 Chern-Simons theories are trivial and almost trivial, respectively. By using this fact, we define S operation and T operation. These operations make SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ group up to a possible invertible phase that is unity within the space-times treated in this paper. Gauge anomaly in 4-dimensions can be viewed as a current inflow into an extra-dimension, where the total phase of the fermion partition function is given in a gauge invariant way by the Atiyah- Patodi-Singer(APS) eta-invariant of a 5-dimensional Dirac operator. However, this formalism requires a non-local boundary condition, with which the physical roles of edge/bulk modes are unclear and how the causality of the theory is maintained is not obvious. In this work, we consider a special case where the Dirac operator is in a real representation and its eta invariant becomes the mod-two type APS index. We consider (4+1)-dimensional topologically massive tensor gauge theory. This theory is an analog of the (2+1)-dimensional topologically massive Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. If the space has a boundary, we find that a (3+1)-dimensional gapless theory appears at the boundary. This gapless theory is a chiral version of the (3+1)-dimensional $\varphi$ theory. This gapless theory is protected by the anomaly inflow mechanism of subsystem symmetry. We explore topological defects in the 4-dimensional pure $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory. This theory has 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ center symmetry as well as the Kramers-Wannier-Wegner (KWW) duality. We construct the KWW duality topological defects in the similar way to that constructed by Aasen, Mong, Fendley arXiv:1601.07185 for the 2-dimensional Ising model. These duality defects turn out to be non-invertible. We also construct the 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry defects as well as the junctions among KWW duality defects and 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ center symmetry defects. The crossing relations among these defects are derived. We propose a supersymmetric quantum field theory with exotic symmetry related to fracton phases. We use superfield formalism and write down the action of a supersymmetric version of the $\varphi$ theory in 3+1 dimensions. It contains a large number of ground states due to the fermionic higher pole subsystem symmetry. Its residual entropy is proportional to the area instead of the volume. This theory has a self-duality similar to that of the $\varphi$ theory. We reformulate the mod-two Atiyah-Patodi-Singer (APS) index in a physicist-friendly way using the domain-wall fermion. Our new formulation is given on a closed manifold, which is extended from the original manifold with boundary, where we instead give a fermion mass term changing its sign at the location of the original boundary. This new setup does not need the APS boundary condition, which is non-local. A mathematical proof of equivalence between the two different formulations is given by two different evaluations of the same index of a Dirac operator on a higher dimensional manifold. The domain-wall fermion allows us to separate the edge and bulk mode contributions in a natural but not in a gauge invariant way, which offers a straightforward description of the global anomaly inflow., Comment: 30 pages, 1 figure, minor corrections

Topological insulators in odd dimensions are characterized by topological numbers. We prove the well-known relation between the topological number given by the Chern character of the Berry curvature and the Chern-Simons level of the low energy effective action for a general class of Hamiltonians bilinear in the fermion with general U(1) gauge interactions including non-minimal couplings by an explicit calculation. In 1985, Callan and Harvey showed a view of gauge anomaly as a missing current into an extra-dimension, and the total contribution, including the Chern-Simons current in the bulk, is conserved. However in their computation, the edge and bulk contributions are separately evaluated and their cross correlations, which should be relevant at boundary, are simply ignored. This issue has been solved in many approaches. Atiyah-Singer index theorem on a lattice without boundary is well understood owing to the seminal work by Hasenfratz et al. But its extension to the system with boundary (the so-called Atiyah- Patodi-Singer index theorem), which plays a crucial role in T-anomaly cancellation between bulk- and edge-modes in 3+1 dimensional topological matters, is known only in the continuum theory and no lattice realization has been made so far. In this work, we try to non-perturbatively define an alternative index from the lattice domain-wall fermion in 3+1 dimensions. The Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem describes the bulk-edge correspondence of symmetry protected topological insulators. The mathematical setup for this theorem is, however, not directly related to the physical fermion system, as it imposes on the fermion fields a non-local and unnatural boundary condition known as the "APS boundary condition" by hand. In 2017, we showed that the same integer as the APS index can be obtained from the $\eta$ invariant of the domain-wall Dirac operator. Recently we gave a mathematical proof that the equivalence is not a coincidence but generally true. We propose a non-perturbative formulation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer(APS) index in lattice gauge theory, in which the index is given by the $\eta$ invariant of the domain-wall Dirac operator. Our definition of the index is always an integer with a finite lattice spacing. To verify this proposal, using the eigenmode set of the free domain-wall fermion, we perturbatively show in the continuum limit that the curvature term in the APS theorem appears as the contribution from the massive bulk extended modes, while the boundary $\eta$ invariant comes entirely from the massless edge-localized modes., Comment: 14 pages, appendices added, details of key equations added, typos corrected, to appear in PTEP

We introduce a mathematician-friendly formulation of the physicist-friendly derivation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index of our previous paper. Our viewpoint sheds some new light on the interplay among the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary condition, domain-wall fermions, and edge modes.
