Deep low-frequency earthquakes (DLFs) beneath volcanoes are possible evidence for deep-seated magmatic activity in the mid-to-lower crust and uppermost mantle. After the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake (Mw 9.0), the number of DLFs beneath the Zao volcano in northeastern Japan began to increase. The hypocenters of the DLFs formed two clusters at shallower (20–28 km) and deeper (28–38 km) depths located near the side and lower parts of the high Vp/Vs zone, respectively. To understand the distribution and behavior of deep volcanic fluids, we examined the spatio-temporal characteristics and focal mechanisms of the DLFs beneath the Zao volcano. Systematic event detection and hypocenter determination based on waveform correlations were performed, which indicated that the activity of the deeper cluster intensified prior to the activation of DLFs in the shallower cluster. In addition, the focal mechanisms based on the averaged S/P wave power spectral ratios of the DLFs grouped by correlation were estimated. We found that the focal mechanisms of all DLF groups had a dominant isotropic component and that the maximum principal axis direction differed slightly from the regional stress field. The source process suggests a chain of tensile-shear cracks with different orientations, which were affected by the local stress field. Our results indicate that deep magma at different depths interacted on the time scale of the magmatic processes other than pressure diffusion. The vibration of a fluid-filled crack is considered to be one of the most plausible source mechanisms for the long-period events and volcanic tremors occurring around volcanoes. As a tool for the quantitative interpretation of source process of such volcanic seismic signals, we propose a method to numerically simulate the dynamic response of a fluid-filled crack. In this method, we formulate the motions of the fluid inside and the elastic solid outside of the crack, using boundary integrals in the frequency domain and solve the dynamic interactions between the fluid and the elastic solid using the point collocation method. The present method is more efficient compared with the time-domain finite difference method, which has been used in simulations of a fluid-filled crack and enables us to study the dynamics of a fluid-filled crack over a wide range of physical parameters. The method also allows us direct calculation of the attenuation quality factor of the crack resonance, which is an indispensable parameter for estimating the properties of the fluid inside the crack. The method is also designed to be flexible to many applications, which may be encountered in volcano seismology, and thus, extensions of the method to more complicated problems are promising. In short period seismograms of microearthquakes, S-wave envelopes are found to broaden with hypocentral distance increasing. For crustal events, envelope broadening is caused not only by multiple scattering due to velocity inhomogeneities but also by the contribution of guided waves and head waves. Intrinsic absorption is also an important parameter to truncate the time duration. Microearthquakes of focal depth less than 40 km and magnitude range from 1.5 to 4.5, which took place in northeastern Honshu, Japan, are used for the study of envelope broadening. Digital data acquired by Hi-net are used for the analysis. We estimated the 90 per cent time duration ( T90) and the root mean square (rms) time duration ( Trms) from the rms traces of horizontal component seismograms for frequency bands 1–2, 2–4, 4–8, 8–16 and 16–32 Hz. The estimated time duration increases with hypocentral distance increasing in both sides of the volcanic front, which runs from south to north in the study area. At reference distance of 100 km, the time duration in the backarc side decreases with frequency; however, that in the forearc side has the minimum at 4 Hz. The time duration at a reference distance in the backarc side is shorter than that in the forearc side especially for frequencies higher than 4 Hz, which can be interpreted by strong intrinsic absorption in the backarc side. We estimate the mass and energy budgets for the 2018 phreatic eruption of Mt. Motoshirane on Kusatsu–Shirane volcano, Japan, based on data obtained from a network of eight tiltmeters and weather radar echoes. The tilt records can be explained by a subvertical crack model. Small craters that were formed by previous eruptions are aligned WNW–ESE, which is consistent with the strike of the crack modeled in this study. The direction of maximum compressive stress in this region is horizontal and oriented WNW–ESE, allowing fluid to intrude from depth through a crack with this orientation. Based on the crack model, hypocenter distribution, and MT resistivity structure, we infer that fluid from a hydrothermal reservoir at a depth of 2 km below Kusatsu–Shirane volcano has repeatedly ascended through a pre-existing subvertical crack. The inflation and deflation volumes during the 2018 eruption are estimated to have been 5.1 × 105 and 3.6 × 105 m3, respectively, meaning that 1.5 × 105 m3 of expanded volume formed underground. The total heat associated with the expanded volume is estimated to have been ≥ 1014 J, similar to or exceeding the annual heat released from Yugama Crater Lake of Mt. Shirane and that from the largest eruption during the past 130 year. Although the ejecta mass of the 2018 phreatic eruption was small, the eruption at Mt. Motoshirane was not negligible in terms of the energy budget of Kusatsu–Shirane volcano. An electrical resistivity model beneath Azumayama Volcano, NE Japan, is explored using magnetotelluric method to probe the magma/hydrothermal fluid distribution. Azumayama is one of the most concerning active volcanoes capable of producing a potential eruption triggered by the 2011 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake. The three-dimensional resistivity model reveals a conductive magma reservoir (< 3 Ωm) at depths of 3–15 km below sea level (bsl). The 67% and 90% confidence intervals of resistivity are 0.2–5 Ωm and 0.02–70 Ωm, respectively, for the magma reservoir. We assumed dacitic melt + rock at a shallow depth of 4 km bsl and andesitic melt + rock at a greater depth of 9 km bsl. The confidence interval of resistivity cannot be explained by using dacitic melt + rock condition at a depth of 4 km bsl. This suggests that very conductive hydrothermal fluids coexist with dacitic melt and rock in the shallow part of the magma reservoir. For the depth of 9 km bsl, the 67% confidence interval of resistivity is interpreted as water-saturated (8.0 weight %) andesitic melt–mafic rock complex with melt volume fractions greater than 4 volume %, while the shear wave velocity requires the fluid and/or melt volume fraction of 6–7 volume % at that depth. Considering the fluid and/or melt volume fraction of 6–7 volume %, the conductive hydrous phase is likewise required to explain the wide range of the 67% confidence interval of resistivity. The Mogi inflation source determined from geodetic data lies on the resistive side near the top boundary of the conductive magma reservoir at a depth of 2.7 or 3.7 km bsl. Assuming that the resistivity of the inflation source region is above the upper bound of the confidence interval of resistivity for the conductive magma reservoir and that the source region is composed of hydrothermal fluid + rock, the resistivity of the source region is explained by a hydrothermal fluid volume fraction below 5 volume %, which is the percolation threshold porosity in an effusive eruption. We present one of the first studies on source location determination for volcanic earthquakes and characterization of volcanic subsurfaces using data from a distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system. Using the arrival time difference estimated from well-correlated waveforms and a dense spatial distribution of seismic amplitudes recorded along the fiber-optic cable, we determine the hypocenters of volcanic earthquakes recorded at Azuma volcano, Japan. The sources are located at a shallow depth beneath active volcanic areas with a range of approximately 1 km. Spatial distribution of the site amplification factors determined from coda waves of regional tectonic earthquakes are well correlated with old lava flow distributions and volcano topography. Since DAS observation can be performed remotely and buried fiber-optic cables are not damaged by volcanic ash or bombs during eruptions, this new observation system is suitable for monitoring of volcanoes without risk of system damage and for evaluating volcanic structures. Abstract: An active seismic survey with unprecedented density of seismometers found a high velocity zone to the west of the summit of Asama Volcano, Japan. The high velocity zone coincides with an area of magma-filled crack (dike) intrusion associated with the 2004 eruptions inferred from precise earthquake relocations and ground deformation modeling. It also coincides with an area of high resistivity surrounded by low resistivity, indicating that the solidification of magma due to repeating intrusions is responsible for the high velocity. This thus endorses the magma pathway previously speculated by seismic and geodetic observations. These findings demonstrate that dense seismic exploration combined with geophysical monitoring is an effective way to understand the dynamics of volcanic eruptions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In order to investigate the continuous volcanic tremor of Aso Volcano in Japan, we performed a series of temporary short-period seismic array observations near the Nakadake first crater (the active crater) during five years from 1999 to 2003. We deployed in all of the temporary observations a seismic array at the same location about 700 m west of the active crater, in order to investigate long-term changes in the tremor activity. In 1999 and 2003, another array was simultaneously deployed at a different location 700 m north of the crater to help locate the tremor sources. We developed a frequency domain semblance method and applied it to the waveform data of the frequency range where the continuous tremor is dominant (3–6 Hz). We measured arrival azimuths and slownesses of the continuous tremor signals as functions of frequency, which are then used to locate the epicenters of the tremor signals corresponding to the principal peaks of the power spectra. For the observations in 1999 and 2002, the continuous tremor amplitudes are relatively small, and the slowness of the tremor signal observed at the west array takes a local minimum (0.5 to 0.6 s/km) near the frequency (∼4.7 Hz for 1999 and ∼4.8 Hz for 2002) which corresponds to the highest spectral peak. This implies that body waves dominate the tremor signals at the west array around the frequency. The tremor epicenters corresponding to 4.7 Hz for the observation in 1999 are located at the west rim of the currently active crater. While the surface crater activity of Aso remains low and the tremor activity is not clearly linked with the surface activity until early 2003, a close link between the tremor and crater activity appears in the middle of 2003, when a small phreatic eruption occurred a month before the array observation (July 10, 2003). Tremor signals of the observation in 2003 show a large spectral peak (4.2 Hz) where the slowness measured for the west array is very large (1.1 s/km), clearly suggesting that surface waves are dominant. The epicenter is again located at the western rim of the active crater. We interpret these observations as follows: in 1999 and 2002 when the surface activities of Aso were low, the continuous tremor excitation was deep and inactive. In the middle of 2003 when Aso Volcano became active with a series of phreatic eruptions a shallower tremor source was activated, possibly masking the deeper sources. This shallowing of the dominant tremor source could be due to the increase in the volcanic gas flow rate triggered by the phreatic eruptions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: At Aso volcano, Kyushu, Japan, several different types of volcanic tremor have been observed for many years. One of them is the continuous tremor, the ground vibration which has dominant frequency between 3 and 10 Hz and has approximately constant amplitudes without any clear beginning and ending. We observed the continuous tremor at Aso using short period seismometer arrays for 3 days in 1999. We locate the source of the continuous tremor by seismic array data processing. We use the semblance coefficients in order to estimate the arrival azimuth and apparent slowness by grid search. The epicenters of the continuous tremor are located around the currently active crater, and the source depths are likely to be shallower than 600 m. We find that the estimated epicenter clearly migrates synchronized with the change in the tremor amplitude. The migration often occurs periodically with a period of about 80 s, but aperiodic occurrence of the migration is also often seen. In both cases, the epicenter is located southeastward (northwestward) when the amplitude is larger (smaller). We propose that there are two or more independent tremor sources with fixed locations, and that their amplitudes modulate either aperiodically or periodically with periods nearly 80 s. The tremor signals from those sources are mixed at the arrays, and the estimated epicenter parameters vary according to which signal dominates the seismograms. The simplest model is that there are two point sources, one at west and the other at south of the crater (we call the two sources as “NW source” and “SE source”, respectively), and the amplitude of the SE source changes with time. Consequently, the SE source dominates the seismogram when the observed amplitude is larger, whereas the NW source dominates when the amplitude is smaller. We generate synthetic seismograms, and apply the location technique to them to verify the validity of the two point source model and to search the locations of two sources which can explain the observed synchronization between the amplitude and the apparent epicenter location. We find that the distance between the two sources needs to be more than 400 m to agree with the observation. We also analyze the seismic array data observed in 2001, and infer that the NW source in 1999 may be identical to the tremor source of the 2001 data. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We installed five broadband seismometers around Mt. Usu, Hokkaido, Japan, just before the first surface eruption on March 31, 2000. By using these broadband data with short-period seismograms recorded by Japan Meteorological Agency and Institute of Seismology and Volcanology of Hokkaido University, we located 590 earthquakes associated with the 2000 eruption of Mt. Usu from March 31, 12:58 to April 5, 2000, including 41 low-frequency earthquakes. Low-frequency earthquakes have clear predominant frequencies of about 1.0–1.5 Hz. While the seismicity of tectonic earthquakes was still active on April 5, there were almost no low-frequency events after April 2. All the low-frequency earthquakes occurred within a vertical and narrow zone near the craters of eruption, and they are shallower than 4 km. In contrast, the active area of tectonic earthquakes spreads out in a large area, particularly deep in the south of the craters. From these temporal and spatial patterns, together with GPS and gravity measurements that support the termination of magma activities before April 2, we suggest that low-frequency earthquakes were caused by magma or hydrothermal activities beneath the volcano while tectonic ones were caused by the regional tectonic stress affected by the intrusion of magma body near the craters. Related to long-term magma activities of this eruption, four deep crustal low-frequency events were identified on October 17, 1998 just in the south of Mt. Usu in the depth range of 20–30 km.
