3. Microstructured organic cavities with high-reflective flat reflectors fabricated by using a nanoimprint-bonding process

Abstract

The integration of photonic microstructure into organic microcavities represents an effective strategy for manipulating eigenstates of cavity or polariton modes. However, well-established fabrication processes for microstructured organic microcavities are still lacking. In this study, we propose a nanoimprint-bonding process as a novel fabrication method for microstructured organic microcavities. This process relies on a UV nanoimprint technique utilizing two different photopolymer resins, enabling the independent fabrication of highly reflective reflectors and photonic microstructures without compromising the accuracy of each. The resulting organic microcavities demonstrate spatially localized photonic modes within dot structures and their nonlinear responses on the pumping fluence. Furthermore, a highly precise photonic band is confirmed within a honeycomb lattice structure, which is owing to the high quality factor of the cavity achievable with the nanoimprint-bonding process. Additionally, a topological edge state is also observable within a zigzag lattice structure. These results highlight the significant potential of our fabrication method for advancing organic-based photonic devices, including lasers and polariton devices.

Abstract

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of light plays a fundamental photophysics that is important for various fields such as materials science, optics, and quantum technology, contributing to the elucidation of new physical phenomena and the development of innovative applications. In this study, we investigate the impact of SOC in a microcavity system using the highly oriented molecular crystal. The unique molecular alignment of our crystal creates substantial optical anisotropy, enabling the observation of significant SOC effects within a microcavity form. Through angle-resolved photoluminescence measurements and theoretical calculations, the presence of Rashba-Dresselhaus (RD) SOC in the lower branch of polariton modes is revealed. We have observed for the first time polarization-coupled emission from polariton modes due to the RD-SOC effect in a microcavity with a medium having both strong light-matter coupling and strong optical anisotropy. Theoretical investigations further elucidate the intricate interplay between the RD-SOC effect and anisotropic light-matter coupling, leading to the emergence of both circularly and diagonally polarized mode splittings. This study not only advances our understanding of optical SOC in microcavities but also highlights the potential of highly oriented molecular crystals in manipulating SOC effects without external electric or magnetic fields. These findings offer greatly promising platforms for developing topological photonics and quantum technologies.

Abstract

Disordered systems exhibit universal excitation, referred to as the boson peak, in the terahertz region. Meanwhile, the so-called fracton is expected to appear in the nanoscale region owing to the self-similar structure of monomers in polymeric glasses. We demonstrate that such excitations can be detected using terahertz spectroscopy. For the interaction between terahertz light and the vibrational density of states of the fractal structure, we formulate an infrared light-vibration coupling coefficient for the fracton region. Accordingly, we show that information concerning fractal and fracton dimensions appears in the exponent of the absorption coefficient. Finally, using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and low-frequency Raman scattering, we experimentally observe these universal excitations in a protein lysozyme system that has an intrinsically disordered and self-similar nature in a single supramolecule. These findings are applicable to disordered and polymeric glasses in general and will be key to understanding universal dynamics of disordered systems by terahertz light.

We consider the influence of domestic and U.S. macro‐economic news surprises on daily bond yields over the January 1999 to January 2018 period for four advanced negative interest rate policy (NIRP) economies—Germany, Japan, Sweden, and Switzerland. Our results suggest that the influence of macro‐economic news surprises is for all four countries under study during the NIRP period nonexistent or noticeably weaker than during the preceding zero interest rate policy (ZIRP) period. Our results are consistent with the suggestion that NIRP is characterized by a lower bound that is no less constraining than the zero‐lower bound that characterizes ZIRP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction: The prevalence of smoking, including heated tobacco products (HTPs), among Japanese dentists was reported to be 16.5%, significantly higher than that among Japanese physicians and United States dentists. However, large-scale studies on smoking cessation implementation based on dentists' smoking status and perceptions since the introduction of HTPs are lacking. Therefore, we aimed to investigate and assess dentists' attitudes toward smoking, including HTP use and smoking cessation, according to smoking status. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire comprising six major items was mailed to 3883 dentists who were members of the Aichi Dental Association in August 2019. The primary outcome was smoking cessation status. The secondary outcome was the impact of smoking on intervention for smoking cessation. This study was reported using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines. Results: Among the 1317 (42%) dentists analyzed, men were more positive toward smoking than women. Current and former smokers were more positive about smoking than never smokers/users, regardless of the tobacco product type. Additionally, the current smoker group using conventional cigarettes was less likely to ask for their patients' smoking status than the never smoker group. Furthermore, the current smoker (OR=2.0; 95% CI: 1.3–3.1 vs never smoker) and HTP user (OR=1.9; 95% CI: 1.2–3.1 vs never user) groups were less likely to engage in smoking cessation than the never smoker/user groups, regardless of the tobacco product type. Conclusions: Since the smoking status of dentists affects the implementation of smoking cessation interventions, it is crucial to encourage them to quit using all tobacco products to promote smoking cessation interventions in dental practice.
